The Hottest New Restaurants to Try Around Baltimore

"Many Little Italy restaurants are neighborhood stalwarts, run by the same families for generations. So when the casual, counter-service spot Joe Benny’s came along in 2014 with its irreverent social media and irresistible meatballs, it felt like a breath of fresh air. But nine years later, Sicilian American chef and owner Joseph Gardella admitted to his customers that he was burnt out and exhausted. After taking some time off and focusing on his health, Gardello was contacted by Little Italy resident Ben Sudano to open a new spot in the former Germano’s space with a name that references both owners. Benny’s is now open as an expanded version of what Gardelllo started with Sicilian pies, housemade pasta, ribeye, and his signature balls." - Jess Mayhugh, Tierney Plumb

Amazing pies and drinks! I’ve been here twice with friends and the seasonal menus are phenomenal. I highly recommend the meatballs and any one of the pizzas. I always go with my vegetarian friends and they have great vegetarian options for starters and entrees. This is def one of my go to’s when in Little Italy.

I don’t even know how to begin to describe the absolutely wonderful experience + food + atmosphere of this place. I joked at the beginning of our meal that “when you’re here you’re family” — and that somehow proved to be right and more. First off, Tony took such excellent care of us from the moment we walked in the door. He was knowledgeable about the menu, kept the drinks (plus the water, too) flowing, and had jokes all the while. He gave us strong recommendations for their best food, which turned out to be 100% correct. The vibe of this place, while a little quiet to start, picked up and became lively quickly. The wait staff was totally attentive all the while, never forgetting anything that we ordered, and always making sure we were well taken care of. The meat of the day for today was a ribeye with such delicious potatoes on the side. It was perfectly cooked at a medium, and the potatoes had a little kick at the back that made them so pleasant and flavorful. The espresso martini was a perfect and delicate balance of sweet, flavorful, and strong — 2 was plenty but a third was craved. This place is an absolute must-stop, and I look forward to being back and trying out the best balls on the block — and probably buying a T-shirt too. 10/10

Joe never disappoints, and neither does the new owner or the entire team. Where do I even begin? From the delicious appetizers to the incredible entrées, Joe’s dishes are always a hit! The food was so good, I didn’t even wait to snap a picture before diving in—hence the half-bitten sandwich and missing focaccia pizza you see here. I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for authentic, flavorful, and reasonably priced Italian cuisine!

A wonderful experience our group of 6 had a great time. We had a bunch of appetizers with our drinks. The signature Meat Balls Boats were the hit. The guys waiting on Us made Us feel special. Highly Recommend !

Love the cozy atmosphere at Benny's! Joe and Tony were welcoming and attentive and offered recommendations for dinner. Got the Sloppy Balls and Bocce foccacia, and both were amazing! I highly recommend Benny's for date night or family dinner...it doesn't disappoint!!!

Yay! Joe's back with Benny's! Best (meat) balls on the block and yummy pastas and salads. Very friendly, attentive service, and lots of great spaces to relax and enjoy the food - there's a bar area as well as indoor and outdoor tables. It's a lovely walk, a few minutes from Inner Harbor, or, if you're driving, ample 3-hour parking around Little Italy.

So delicious!!! Taking meatballs home to Indianapolis. I have to pay these prices in Indy for Olive Garden 😖. Great value for quality, service & atmosphere! Thank you!
