"Berbena is a popular addition to the blossoming world of chef-driven, modern Catalan cuisine in Barcelona. Grab one of the handful of tables, and begin your meal with hearty chunks of house-made sourdough smeared with rich, smoked butter. Then dive into the assortment of seasonal small plates featuring whatever is fresh that day, from grilled sea bass collar with preserved lemon to an omelet of wild mushrooms with roasted onions. Shellfish and other seafood are always in abundance, and vibrant vegetables often play a starring role in the nightly specials. The cheese selection is impressive, as are the small-production wines from local vineyards. Linger over dessert as you enjoy excellent coffee from nearby SlowMov specialty roasters and espresso from the gleaming La Marzocco machine." - Sam Zucker

"Locals reign supreme here. Few tourists have heard of Berbena and even fewer venture off the beaten track to the posh end of town above Avenida Diagonal. Inside, there daily batches of home-baked bread that smell like your grandma’s kitchen, comfort food like hearty beef with wine stew and gooey slices of Spanish omelet, platters of locally sourced cheese and charcuteries—all made for sharing. We'd like to imagine that you'll probably stumble in here for a quick bite. You'll find a table by the window. One thing will lead to another and, before you know it, it’ll be midnight, and you'll realize you’ve spent hours snacking and sipping and chatting. And you won’t regret a single second of it" - Isabelle Kliger, Gemma Askham

"A diminutive, unpretentious and informal restaurant with a name that pays homage to the traditional “berbena” festivals. Here, you can enjoy chef Carles Pérez de Rozas Canut’s cooking to the full, with his focus on simple yet highly captivating dishes based around seasonal Mediterranean ingredients, but which also feature influences from Asia and South America. Personality in spades, with an open kitchen and enticing recipes that tell us lots about the chef, his travels and his work in other countries. The superb desserts complete the picture!" - Michelin Inspector

Lucky enough to walk in at open for lunch. The place is run beautifully, and the food and wine match. Would honestly suggest following the suggestion of the staff on both fronts.

What an amazing restaurant! We were lucky enough to book on the waitlist and make it in due to a cancellation, but otherwise the place is in very high demand, and rightly so! All the dishes were amazing, with excellent taste and fresh, high quality ingredients. We were particularly impressed by the artichoke, the ricotta with beets, and the desserts! The kitchen staff is very efficient and fascinating to watch, and the service was fast and helpful. Would definitely recommend!

This is of my favorite restaurants in Barcelona. The dishes were creative and well balanced. We had a conversation with the staff and pretty much ordered what was suggested. They have half orders for many items and you get to enjoy many options. Keep room for the desserts, they are just as excellent as the savory dishes.

Had a wonderful experience today (mid-afternoon). Arrived a few minutes after opening and got the LAST seats in the house. Entire waitstaff was phenomenal, patient and made excellent recommendations. Don’t skip the “bread & sides” to start, we followed with Jerusalem Artichokes, cabbage and tapioca with cheese croquette. Went with the beef cheek and mushrooms, truffled artichokes for our mains. Went ended with the LIFE CHANGING frozen crème fraiche, love oil and sea salt. I have never eaten something so unique and delicious. It literally brought tears to my eyes. 😊

I had a wonderful birthday dinner there last week. Everything was on point, from taste and timing to the music and mood — to service and singing 😅 thank you, berbena team! (The option to order half portions in order to be able to try more plates deserves an extra ⭐️)

It’s one of those places where everything just falls into the right place. The food, the environment, the music selection and the service. The fact there are two night shifts already adds to the experience while you are waiting outside with everybody else who booked the same shift as you, it almost feels like you are queuing up for a show . Once inside everything feels cosy and warm wrapping. The tones of grey and wood, the tiny space in between the tables that make you feel like the waiters are always around you and with you, the “funky” music that almost feels out of place but contributes to give a light-hearted and playful feel. And the food. Which you won’t have to wait too long for. It comes at the right pace and it fills you just enough. The flavors are all well balanced. Must have been a dill-themed season for them since most dishes seemed to come with it. Dessert were to die for. The wine from the Canary Islands was a pleasant discovery. We will be back.

We had a lovely time at this restaurant. It is in the Michelin Guide and still very reasonably priced. The food was delicious and the service pretty good. It is quite busy so you need to book well in advance.

Berbena is one of those unique places that you would like to recommend to anyone that enjoys good food. Mediterranean food, small plates designed to share. Carefully prepared dishes, with vegetables, meat, fish… and surprisingly, a selection of cheeses within the menu! Anything that the staff will recommend you will surely be worth trying. It is also spectacular to see how coordinated all the staff at the kitchen are. Quick, diligent… truly experts. A spot worth visiting!

Good food overall but poor service - I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Yes, the olive oil ice cream was fantastic and there were great dishes like the market fish and beef cheeks (and a few misses). It was great too that they offered half serves so diners could try more food. However, the service left a sour taste right from the start.. We were told that they recommend 2 starts and 2 mains, excluding bite sized dishes like croquettes and the bread. However, it soon became apparent that it was less a recommendation, and more an expectation. I was taken aback by how pushy, blunt and unsmiling the lady taking our order was. Even after we settled on bread with sides, croquettes, 1.5 starters and 2 mains, she kept pushing for us to get another starter. I was getting stressed and she finally gave up when my partner said firmly that we were happy with our choices. We certainly didn't feel like we ordered unreasonably little (had 4 glasses of wine too)! I gave feedback on this encounter to this lady in person and she replied it was a 'culture' thing (wanted to ensure we didn't leave hungry). Unfortunately, it seemed to me that she was more concerned about the ‘recommendation’.. There were other elements too... like a waiter simply leaving the menu at the corner of our table when we asked for the dessert menu, without a word or even looking in our direction. This was our first proper meal in Barcelona and I was excited to be seated at the chef's table (where I usually enjoy seeing the action and chatting to the staff). However, it ended up being one of the worse dining experiences during our 2 weeks in Spain. Disappointing.

Yelp
Amazing food & staff. Very helpful with menu suggestions, with guidance on taste preferences, portions and flavor combinations. Everything was delicious. I debated on sharing my dessert experience, because some might find it hard to believe. The frozen crème fraiche with olive oil and sea salt literally brought tears to my eyes. DON'T leave without having it!

Yelp
wine was great, but the food was incredibly disappointing. barcelona (and spain) has absolutely delicious food that is hard to miss, but each dish here actually missed it? too thick/heavy flavors for a light, white fish, rancid oil scent, not enough salt on meat. very basic errors that contributed to a sad meal. they were having a rough service anyways (20-30 minutes in between plates to the wrong tables). maybe an off night but for us a disappointing waste of a meal. 65 euros pp and we went to another bar afterwards to finish eating LOL

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. The vibe, the waitstaff and, most of all, the food were all incredible. For a party of 5, we had bread with the fix'uns, 4 starters and 4 mains and it was plenty of food. Everything we super tasty. Waiters had great recommendations on the wines which was helpful. Our last dish of the night was the guineafowl with parsnips and the "pan sauce" was out of this world. Definitely make a reservation if you have the time.

Yelp
10/10, no notes. Our experience tonight was unbelievable from start to finish. The ambiance, vibes, staff, and food were all top tier. Set the bar pretty high as our first dinner in Barcelona. If you can get a reservation, highly recommend scooping it up!

Yelp
This is as much a labor of love that I've ever seen. They do it because food is their life, and it shows. We tried 8 or nine things, and it was all amazing. Trust their suggestions, on both food and wine. I will be back. For sure.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. We visited Barcelona in September of 2022. Berbena was a restaurant that I made reservations for months in advance, It's a very intimate restaurant, seating very few. The reviews were fantastic, and we were so excited to have the privilege to dine at Berbena. Chef Carles greeted us kindly upon entering his restaurant. From the moment we were seated until the moment we left, we enjoyed ourselves. The food was so delicious. The ingredients combined just made me want to shut my eyes and enjoy every bite. The service and staff made us feel like special guests. Spain was a trip of a lifetime, and Berbena will always be part of that magical experience.

Yelp
I will be thinking about this dinner for a long time! On a recent trip to Barcelona, this was my favorite meal by far -- above and beyond some too-fancy two-Michelin-starred places. Everything about the experience at Berbena is warm and welcoming: from the handwritten reservation list and the invitation to choose your table, to the discussion with the staff to help select the perfect glass or bottle of wine. We loved the opportunity to sit and watch the team at one of two chef's counters, as they all clearly enjoyed their work and the pursuit of culinary delights for their guests. Dish after dish, we were blown away by the quality of the ingredients and the nuanced flavor and texture combinations. While many of the dishes cycle off the menu quickly due to seasonality, the crème fraiche ice cream is likely a staple -- get it, even if you're full to the gills.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants during our trip to Barcelona. Reservations a must as only two sittings 715 and 945 pm on weekdays. Intimate, open kitchen restaurant. Waitstaff very helpful and friendly with good suggestions about options and quantity. Loved all our starters, main dishes, and desserts. Would love to visit again!

Yelp
This wasn't just the best meal I had in Barcelona, it's one of the best meals I've ever had. The chefs come out and speak to you at the tables so your servers are also the ones preparing the food. The menu was adventurous but familiar. The wine selection was incredible and the atmosphere was so cozy and elevated at the same time. I wish I could eat here every night.

Yelp
Great food! They care about your dining experience! We celebrated our anniversary and they made it special!

Yelp
Berbena is a popular spot for modern Catalan cuisine in Barcelona, and it was one of the most enjoyable night out we had! There were only a handful of tables with less than 20 diners in total, a reservation in advance is required. We started our meal with hearty chunks of homemade sourdough bread smeared with smoked butter and side of pork neck. Amazing! Up next was a mix of small plates that changes seasonally: fried artichoke, the ox tail gyoza with broth was heavenly, as for the main dishes, we ordered the beef tongue and the pork belly with lemon to an omelette of wild mushrooms with chad and jus. Both rich, tender and full of flavors. The cheese selection is impressive, as is the selection of small-production wines from local vineyards. There was wine list, but Chef Carlos actually spoke to each table to understand their palate and preference to recommend the right bottle. We ended up taking a bottle to go to try after our dinner. Amazing experience! We love every moment of our night out with great cozy atmosphere, lovely food and genuine service.

Yelp
Out of all the dinners in Barcelona last week, this was probably my favorite. Amazing food & fantastic service--would recommend to anyone. Get reservations because the space is small but definitely worth it.

Yelp
Listen, you MUST get a reservation here. I know that they have a Michelin star so I don't need to go into too much depth, but this was one of the most delicious and also affordable eating experiences I have had in my life. The staff is so kind and the whole experience is so lovely. every dish we had was delicious and we got to sit at the chef's table so we could see them preparing dishes which was awesome. I tried stingray for the first time in my life, which was absolutely delicious, and even foods I thought I knew well, like cabbage, were served so masterfully that it was like nothing Ive ever had before. And don't get me started on the desert which was gone so quickly I didn't even get to take a picture of both dishes. Do not hesitate to make a reservation, I promise you that you will not regret it. These guys know what they're doing and they are doing it at a price that is attainable to every day people which is so amazing. I will 1000% be back the next time I am in Barcelona, no questions asked.

Yelp
This was the best dining experience my friends and I have ever had! All of the staff were incredible, the food made us like ingredients we never thought we would enjoy, and we were blown away by the warmth and love from the kitchen. The prices were also incredibly reasonable for the quality of the food. If you are looking for a special place, this is it!!

Yelp
Part of me doesn't want to let anybody else know about this awesome little place in the Gracia district of Barcelona. I don't want it to be harder to get into next time I'm there. But, Carlos (owner/chef) has too much of a good thing here not to recognize it on Yelp. We've dined here twice in the month of September (lucky enough to have 2 Barcelona work trips in the same month) and both times were amazing experiences. Our first visit was on a Monday night and we didn't have a reservation. Fortunately, Carlos made room for us at the counter between the tiny dining room and the even tinier kitchen area. It ended up being like a chef's table experience. We were able to watch the kitchen team (Carlos and 2 helpers) prep, cook and plate everything. The attention to detail was so impressive. Carlos's passion for food and cooking was evident in every move he made. He's an artist. Example. We started out telling Carlos we wanted a bottle of Rioja. He said he unfortunately didn't have any at the moment because he was waiting for "the perfect Rioja" that he'd recently tasted to be available. He recommended an alternative that was fantastic. He told us it was the first night in awhile that they were serving the famous Spanish tomato bread because the tomatoes were finally good enough for him to be comfortable serving. Most every other place we'd been had the bread--because they just used whatever tomatoes they could find. There are no English language menus, but Carlos happily walked through each item explaining what it was. It was like an artist describing each of his paintings. Each dish was creative and ultimately--delicious. Both times, we told him to just bring us the things he thought we would enjoy--so two personal Chef's menu opportunities. I won't go into detail about any specific dishes as he changes things depending on what ingredients he can get. Just know that everything we had on both visits was remarkable. Oh...if he has the lamb brain, get it. Amazing. Finally, Berbena is located in the Gracia district and is very close to some great local bars. Old Fashioned Gin & Tonic bar is one we fell in love with (will review separately). It's a 10 minute walk away. That whole part of town is an excellent place to eat and drink.

Yelp
A really great dining experience! Fantastic wine program and we tasted nearly everything on the menu. Dinner was a gastronomic delight and a highlight of our trip to BCN. The atmosphere is chill and relaxed yet run by true professionals.

Yelp
Chef is egotistical maniac thief. Due to unfortunate circumstances that come with traveling to a foreign country - getting lost, phone dying / losing service, arriving back from a day of traveling much later than expected - my friends and I missed our reservation at Berbena. We were unable to contact the restaurant in advance to inform. Two days later I received a charge for 180 Euro - over 200 USD - for the missed reservation. After explaining the situation to the restaurant and pleading with them to refund the cancellation fee as this imposed an ENORMOUS financial burden on my personal finances (I'm a young waitress, I don't have a very high salary and had been saving for this trip for a very long time) the chef/owner Carlos messaged me personally from the restaurant's IG and refused to refund me as if I had purposefully and maliciously missed my reservation, refused to have a conversation on the phone about the matter, and blocked me from the restaurant's Instagram page so that I could not make a further complaint. I find this behavior psychopathic, unprofessional and inhuman - to have such apathetic disregard for unforeseen circumstances and other human being's personal financial situations is a disgrace. I apologized profusely for missing my reservation, and as I'm a waitress and also work in restaurants I understand the financial impact of no-show tables. But for a chef/owner of such a successful, well-respected, highly-rated restaurant that clearly has financial success, to personally send nasty messages, refuse to refund a young NOT wealthy traveler on whom this charge imposed an ENORMOUS and devastating financial burden is simply disgusting, disappointing, and sick behavior. I recognize it was my fault we did not inform the restaurant we could no longer arrive - none of us had working cell phone service, as can happen in a foreign country. But for a chef owner to have such lack of empathy and understanding is so cruel that I'm certain this behavior and attitude is reflected in the character of the restaurant. I highly recommend travelers to avoid dining here. There's plenty of other restaurants in Barcelona that treat visitors with basic respect and human dignity, this one does not deserve your time or money.

Yelp
Amazing food and service for a very reasonable price - what a find. Reservations are difficult - so plan well I'm advance.
