"If All Time decided to pursue a fine arts degree and move somewhere with room to raise a few chickens, the result would be something like Bernee, a refined dinner spot in Altadena that feels like a settled-down version of its youthful sibling in Los Feliz. Walking in, your eyes are immediately drawn to the massive wood-fired hearth behind the bar, and just about everything on the menu passing over its glowing embers: blistered seasonal vegetables, large plates like crisp-skin seabass over herby green sauce, and a standout roasted pork belly with heirloom beans smothered in garlicky “butcher’s block” salsa. Half the neighborhood seems to be already planning their next night out here, so start looking for a table now." - Brant Cox

Got in line a few minutes before they opened at 5pm on a Monday and snagged a table for 3. Everyone was very nice and the food is great. It’s very much approachable basics but executed well with high quality ingredients. Very American wood fired oven type vibes. Loved the sourdough bread (def get the butter; cheese was good but I could skip) steak, carrots, and potatoes. The chicken was a bit dry and didn’t quite understand the flatbread underneath / the vinegary marinade. Snap peas and gem lettuces were also simple and good. Their wine by the glass is around $19 or at least mine was. I believe cheapest bottle of wine started at $80. My photos are crap but I felt like I had to contribute some since they’re so new and not a ton of photos out there yet.

Oh, my, freakin,’ goodness. We are some food obsessed, from down the street locals—so we were delighted to hear Bernee was coming to Altadena, but nothing prepared us to sit right at the bar, watching the talented team juggle myriad dishes over a smoldering wood burning fire with almost all cast iron. Service was warm, attentive, and friendly from the host station to the waitstaff. The food…was just downright sensational. We ordered rolls with black pepper butter, which we affectionately dubbed ‘the magic rolls’ on the ride home. The pork belly had an addictive crispiness, served with rancho gordo beans and cutting board salsa that paired perfectly. We shared deliciously seasoned king mushrooms with aged balsamic, the New York strip with hotel butter was expertly charred, medium rare…and we really want to know what salt you used on that business. It was only day 4 of Bernee being open in Altadena. The place was packed with a cozy, boisterous, jazzy atmosphere—and we can’t wait to bring our friends and fam to try everything else. Thank you and welcome to the neighborhood!

Bernee is an exciting addition to the dining scene, bringing an inviting atmosphere and a fresh take on adult cuisine. Situated among the charming boutique shops on Mariposa in downtown Altadena, this restaurant offers a delightful escape. Upon entering, you're welcomed by the warm, natural pine interior, beautifully illuminated by the glow of wood-burning stoves. It's a captivating setting that sets the stage for a memorable meal. During our visit, we indulged in the Chilean Seabass, accompanied by fresh snow peas, cabbage, and carrots. Each dish was beautifully presented, and we found the flavors to be exceptional. For dessert, we treated ourselves to the blackened cheesecake, which was a decadent finish to our meal. They have an excellent wine selection! While the portions are on the smaller side, I recommend ordering additional vegetable dishes to complement your main course—it's a great way to enhance your dining experience. The staff at Bernee were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. My only critique would be the music, which was a bit loud for my taste. A softer volume would make the atmosphere even more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend Bernee to anyone looking for a unique dining experience. We will definitely be returning soon!

Google
Phenomenal food and dining experience, can’t wait to return and try everything else. The chicken was possibly the juiciest and most flavorful I’ve ever had, and the steak was mouth watering. Hospitality and ambience perfectly complement what is certainly the new best restaurant in Altadena. Special thanks to Tyler 🙏

We are so pumped to welcome a new restaurant to Altadena! With hungry hearts (and stomachs) craving good vibes and great eats, we left very satisfied. The chicken? Beyond amazing. The cabbage and carrots? A total scene-stealer. Add in kind service and a cool atmosphere, and you’ve got yourself a winner. Welcome to Altadena—you’ll definitely be seeing us again!

Despite a lively crowd filling the room, the service and attention still felt as intimate as if Tyler & Ashley are having you over for dinner. The portions are more than satisfying, local in-season ingredients are the star as always, and the fire-forged flavors and textures are incomparable. Every menu item seems deceptively understated, but no matter how simple it sounds, each contains a universe of flavor and texture. Just like All Time, you're accompanied with an incredible wine selection and an intimately knowledgeable staff. This is the gold standard for hospitality in every sense.

Google
Bernee's is exquisite! The best new restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley! The food cooked over an open wood burning fire is divine - healthy, smoky, flavorful - we couldn't leave a bite behind! We paired our meal with a delicious bottle of wine from their well curated list. The wait staff was very friendly, accommodating and guided us through the menu like pros. The space is minimal, warm and hip. We can't wait to go back. Bravo!

KEEP YOUR RECEIPT!!!! I paid my bill, left a very decent cash tip, and looks at my account later and my bill was $20 more than what I signed for! I am assuming a digital tip was claimed even though I didn't approve. Sad part is, I called THREE times and left messages and no one ever even called me back to fix it. Food was okay, our waiter was attentive, but it is pricey-$100 for 2 of us and we shared a plate with some side veggies. I never give bad ratings but charging extra and then not even following up with my messages is just unacceptable.

Yelp
To start, I've always been a huge of fan of All Time, this restaurant's predecessor, so I was looking forward to trying their new wood-fired concept. I also grew up in Altadena so to have a restaurant come in of this ilk was exciting. Ambiance/space: The space is beautifully decorated, cozy, wood paneled, candle lit. The open kitchen is entertaining to watch, but if you sit at the bar or at the tables behind the bar, prepare to be warm. The music was a bit too loud for such a small space so it was hard to hear each other talk, but the music selection was good. Service: Servers were attentive. Food: Hamachi crudo: I know that the yellowtail fish typically used for crudo is expensive, but for the price (x4 pieces for $25) I was expecting something more flavorful and nuanced. And even more so when they add an acid component (lemon?) that completely overpowers the subtle flavor of the fish. Savoy Cabbage & Weiser Carrots: It's carrots and cabbage put on the grill with some oil/vinegar and too much salt that my palette was blown out after a while. The first bite of the outside of the cabbage was flavorful, but once you work your way to the inside layers, the flavor dissipates. The char was lovely and the part of the dishes I appreciated the most. 6 out of the 13 plates are vegetables. I understand the concept of fresh good ingredients on the grill, but when you are selling a simple vegetable (although locally sourced) for $12-$15 dollars a dish, I expect a bit more thoughtfulness on flavor. The Baja Bass: I think this was the most balanced dish we ordered. The fennel citrus slaw added a delicious brightness. Wood-oven Cheesecake: This cheesecake was delicious, done in Basque style. I'm not sure if they make it in house or if it's baked at All Time. In conclusion: It's an overpriced meal with too much focus on the wood-fire and less on the personality and balance of flavor.

Yelp
I can't believe the Bernee team hit the ground running as smoothly as they did. The restaurant has only been open for a month and despite it being crazy busy, the service was warm, thoughtful, and welcoming. The menu is designed with an obvious effort to focus on quality not quantity. This makes sense in such a compact space. Everything is easier family-style and apps are relatively large (especially the salads), but the mains are designed to have a side or two added. The co-owner Carson Wells was right there on the floor ensuring things lived up to his standards. That was great to see. I should add that the wine list is also a delight. I am also thrilled to see that Altadena is starting to develop some great neighborhood places. Go here - you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
We are blessed up here in these hills. Thank you Bernee for opening your doors. This cozy spot is date night approved and seriously good. We had the rib eye, potatoes in the style of someone, carrots, and two desserts. The gateau and the chocolate mousse. All divine. Will return

Yelp
Had a fabulous time at Bernee's yesterday. We had an 8 pm reservation and got there a couple minutes late but had to wait about 15 minutes for our table. We didn't mind. The space is very small and they were great about checking in! Upon entering the vibes were great and the ambience was simple yet elevated. Nice music, dark in a good way, the wood burning oven. Our server was fantastic- nice, attentive, knowledgeable. All of the other staff that brought out food or checked in were super attentive and friendly too. We started off with a great wine and appetizers. Portions are large! Definitely took some home since it was just the two of us but good for a slightly larger party to share too. Everything was fresh tasty and abundant. Standouts were the bread and butter and cheese of the day, steak, and carrots. Bummed the mushrooms were out so will have to try next time. We finished off with two great dessert wines and two desserts both yummy and not too sweet. We are lucky to be in walking distance to this gem so will definitely be back and welcome it as a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Some notes: Highly recommend for a date night or small intimate group as not great for larger parties. Definitely a place to have a full on dinner from start to finish- not just a drink as everyone at the bar was eating too. They need to take advantage of every spot. May have to wait outside for a bit but inside is warm due to oven so dress accordingly. On the louder side but loved the music and the vibes.

Yelp
We had an incredible evening at Bernee-- hands down best dining experience I've had in some time now. Firstly, the restaurant is beautifully designed and the use of the space, colors and tones, and the warmth of the fires from the kitchen create a cozy, intimate ambience. The service is top notch. The hostess was wonderful. Our server Tom was friendly, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond in making sure we were taken care of and enjoying our experience. And we enjoyed some pleasant convos with owner, Tyler Wells. And the food and wine was exquisite... we followed Tom's suggestions for the best wine selections, and he didn't disappoint! And then the food started rolling out, so to speak! The dinner rolls with black pepper butter were an amazing introduction to the restaurant. Buttery, peppery, and a great mouthfeel. I wanted to eat them all! We also got the cheese of the day, and while I fail to remember the name, you can trust them to pick the best ones! Then came the (huge) little gems salad with the most delicious shallot vinaigrette and Payne walnuts. The salad was bright, refreshing, and a great palate cleanser for the main entree, the wanderer NY strip with hotel butter. I feel like I need pads of this butter in my fridge stat! The steak was perfectly cooked and the finishing salt was spectacular. We paired this with the weiser potatoes in the style of anna. I really enjoyed the sliced potatoes and especially the crispy ones on top! While we barely had room for dessert, we opted for the chocolate budino, which was light and a little revitalizing after a decadent meal. Loved every moment and will be back!

Yelp
OMG, this place was THE BEST!! Farm to table amazing ingredients sourced locally and sustainably by the wonderful Tyler and his staff. We were looking forward to many more dinners there, especially since it was only minutes from our new house. Sadly, January 8 changed all that. Our house is gone and the restaurant was damaged. But, Tyler says he's coming back! I sure hope so because Bernee was a standout star in the LA restaurant community and even more so in our sweet little town of Altadena.

Yelp
What a beautiful, special & delicious dining experience. And it was an experience unlike any place we've been to. Our party of 5 were so impressed with everything we ordered. The tomahawk ribeye was spectacular, the chicken and the striped bass were so delicious. And the sides!!! Their wine list is so well curated. And thank you to the perfect staff for making our evening perfect. Thank you Tyler & Ashlee for bringing this wonderful restaurant to our little neighborhood.

Yelp
Every once in a while, a looong while....a new restaurant opens up in your neighborhood. This place is ooozing w class, energy, and innovation. The fire grill is amazing like no other. Ingredients are incredible. Impeccable pleasant eager service. With smiles. Applause is required for this opening. Altadena...relish the victory of this owner bringing us this place. Our hats off to ya!!!!

Yelp
Shockingly good after just one week of service. Not only does Bernee mark a new chapter for Altadena but it seems destined to become one of L.A.'s most notable restaurants for years to come. Food and service were all entirely on point. Atmosphere is exceptional. And wine list is impressive yet accessible. Only quibble is the lack of a list for wines by the glass. Though it's charming to talk with the staff about preferences, would prefer ability to absorb all the options, so no good glass goes untried.

Alicia R.

Yelp
10/10 cannot wait to go again. Dark candlelit moody date spot but upbeat music to keep the vibes going. Incredible wine list (they have a recited menu for by the glass). Loved the sourdough with semi soft cheese, little gem (it's actually quite big), NY Strip, anna potatoes, snap peas, and the gateau basque is the most incredible + unique cake Ive ever had. The bundino whipped cream was sooo fresh! Counter and fire-side seating is very warm, so layer (and they do have pebble ice if you ask)!

Yelp
We had a phenomenal experience at Bernee! We had went on only their second night open and everything start to finish was incredible. From the attentive service, impeccable dishes, and beautiful ambiance we were truly blown away. Both my husband and I loved every single dish, appetizer to dessert. The owner chatted with us for a good while at the end of the night while we enjoyed our (mouthwateringly good) cheesecake, and it was immediately evident that this gem is run by truly good hearted, local humans who care about the experience they provide to their Altadena community. We can't wait for our New Year's Eve reservation. We knew we wanted Bernees to be our last special date night before our first baby arrives!

Michelle D.

Yelp
We had dinner here. It was our first time and it was amazing. So happy that Altadena has a sit-down dinner spot. This is a must try! Get the dinner rolls! Service was great! Ambience was great!

Jairo A.

Yelp
I went in with high expectations, I'm huge fan of All Time restaurant, this didn't disappoint, this is the new go to dinner spot in Altadena

Tom C.

Yelp
Definitely a special occasion secret tucked away in Altadena. Fabulous kitchen theater. Great food and service. Overpriced? Yes. A more affordable wine choice or a draft beer wood be a welcome alternative. Hence the four stars. Maybe just a once a year treat for us.

Wade J.

Yelp
These guys really know the restaurant business. Food was crazy good, service was great and a nice ambiance for a date night. Really nice to have an upper scale dining option in the Foothills.

Sandra A.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to trying out this new spot, however our experience was a bit underwhelming. Maybe we came on an off night? The ambiance is cool and the location is perfect. The food was just okay, the beans that came with our pork belly were undercooked/inedible. The hamachi was really good but not much for presentation. Salad and risotto were pretty basic. The final bill was $$$.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Our experience at Bernee was beyond expectation, which before our arrival would seem impossible. Our expectation was very high based on our experiences at the owner's original restaurant, All Time. The ambience was absolutely perfect, from the giant wood-burning open fire barbecue that serves as their kitchen which is the centerpiece of the restaurant, to the music, to the overall vibe. The staff was amazing, to include the owner himself who was physically working throughout the night yet took the time to stop by and have some genuine and cool conversation. None of this comes together without the quality of food. All I can say is "oh my God"! I initially didn't want to fill up on the dinner rolls, but was compelled to order another round! They were that good. Each course out did the one prior. I seriously and honestly cannot recommend this place enough, if you can get on their waiting list and get a table! My wife and I cannot wait to return to show this gem off to close friends, but mostly for the selfish reasons of our own enjoyment, both socially and culinary! I give this restaurant the highest recommendation possible.
