Yelp
Besties Vegan Paradise has been on my Yelp (vegan grocery stores) list to try for years, & I live in San Bernardino county, so I was happy it was going to work out today when I was 30 minutes away from Little Armenia/ East Hollywood. As I walked in, I looked at the cashier to greet the employees and not knowing at the time, but as I saw on a google Green Veganista review, after i visited today, it was the co-owner (Asia Rain). I looked up the establishments' different locations so I would not have to come back to the same service I received today, but indeed I encountered one of their founders.
As we made eye contact, I greeted her, and only then did she acknowledge me. I make it a point to speak about the welcoming aspects because as more customers started to walk in they were greeted with a "hello, welcome, " or even "nice to see you." I believe everyone that comes to support the business should receive the same service.
The most important experiences I write today are as follows: I recently have been to places that have always been vegan and then suddenly they may have a carnivore option on their menu the next time I visit so I always have to make sure I am understanding the menu correctly. I was new to the store and wanted to get more clarification if all the sandwiches were made with plant proteins because the titles may reflect meat style titles. I asked the counter support employee (Asia) "are these all vegan sandwiches?" she said patronizingly and with a side eye: "Yes." The next time I had a question I said "excuse me, what flavor are these gumballs?" She said "I don't know." I kept walking around and shopping but I thought I would at least be able to get support with them looking it up on the site from where they purchased or even looking at the original box, maybe in the back as they were individually packed, but I received no help and she shrugged her shoulders. Lastly, as I check out, she bags my items and I put my hand out to grab the groceries. When she put her hand on the bag, she acted as if she was going to hand it to me, but instead put it to the side farthest away from me. In this instance it was more difficult and I had to reach over the counter to grab the groceries, which wouldn't have been rude if she did not intentionally place them there after the purchase and she saw my hand out, ready to grab my bag. To add on, I put my email in to be sent the receipt and I asked if it was confirmed, and she said "it looks like it." Therefore not checking if it did, and i still have not received my receipt of over 100+ dollars spent this day.
I write this because it is important that vegans have the opportunity to have access to items that remind them of their favorite snacks when growing up etc, but if the business is not inclusive and treats the community badly, it really shows that the vegan lifestyle of valuing and accepting everyone and every-being, it is not prioritized at Besties Vegan Paradise.
