Bettola Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Bettola is a pleasant place to come with a date and split a carafe of lambrusco and a heap of sliced porchetta. The all-day Italian spot in the Richmond serves a tight menu of solid appetizers, baked pastas, and rotisserie, but you’re better off sticking with the simple yet satisfying pizza al trancio and skipping the pasta e fagioli that’s missing oomph. If you and your date run out of things to talk about, turn your attention to the silent film that’s being projected on the wall, or practice your shuffling skills with the deck of cards hiding in the silverware holder. There’s also a deli counter and market set-up in the back, so Bettola works just as well for a quick grab-and-go rotisserie chicken lunch." - Julia Chen

30 Essential Restaurants to Know in Birmingham, Alabama

"While there’s no shortage of pizza in Birmingham, the options for Neapolitan-style pies are a little slim. Helmed by chef James Lewis, Bettola specializes in wood-fired pizzas, pastas made on site, and a robust selection of cocktails and wine. It’s an ideal spot for a dinner with friends or colleagues, but couples can also squeeze into the bar for an intimate date night." - Sarra Sedghi

Google
Wonderful experience. I was not expecting much, but it did exceed my expectations. The food is good very contemporary Italian not so much traditional. Service from the young lady at the bar was a 20 out of 10. I wish her luck on her interview and if she gets her job, you still have to keep her part-time. The staff was engaged and even Server is coming up to the bar service area. I will definitely be back I had the carbonara pasta. It was very good. I will definitely be back to try more food options.

Google
Great pasta and pizza joint. They have an upscale vibe. Their pasta is all home made and you can taste the difference. The place fills up fast within an hour of them opening, so get reservations if you are concerned. There were some flys that we had to deal with but that is likely due to just being in the south, and not specific to the restaurant. Their tiramisu has lots of chocolate cocoa on the top so you will likely have a dry mouth after each bite. But it tasted amazing so I highly recommend the tiramisu.

Google
Had a wonderful meal, including an exquisite white pizza with mushroom and truffle oil, a plum cocktail, and a mixed green/herb salad. I sat inside and was pleased to find that it wasn’t too loud or too crowded, although they were plenty of people.

Google
My favorite restaurant in Birmingham and my go-to spot for date nights and girls’ nights! The carbonara is absolutely incredible, the ambiance is perfect, and the service is always top-notch. Special shoutout to Maria who served us tonight—she was so sweet and attentive. Can’t recommend this place enough!

I recently revisited Botella at Pepper Place for lunch, and it was just as delightful as I remembered. The laid-back and quiet atmosphere makes it perfect for a relaxed meal with a significant other, friends, or just some downtime. 👍❤️ We ordered a pizza half topped with chicken and half with Italian sausage. The Italian sausage side was delicious, but the chicken was a bit dry for my taste.🤦‍♀️ Despite this, the service was excellent, and parking was readily available. 😁 I'll definitely return to Botella, opting for the all-Italian sausage pizza next time. 🤭 If you haven't been to Botella yet, make it a point to visit. You won't be disappointed by their wide variety of pizza and pasta options!👍

Google
Ordered the Margarita pizza + add sausage for $25. The cooking technique is still a work in progress, burnt on top & undercooked on the bottom but the homemade sausage was solid.

Google
Came for Valentine’s Day dinner with my boyfriend and holy cow, this was genuinely some of the best Italian cuisine I’ve ever had, and our service was great. My only gripe (though this is very minor) was that it did feel a little crowded and tight, but I guess that’s to be expected with a packed house on one of the biggest days of the year in the service industry, so I won’t complain too much, since I used to be a waitress at a chain restaurant with no moveable tables and can understand that frustration. Other than that, it was fantastic.💜

Google
The food was absolutely delicious. Got the Bolognese and the prosciutto and arugula pizza. Probably was the best pizza dough I've ever had and everything was super fresh. In terms of atmosphere it's very cute inside but very very loud. It was hard to have a conversation without raising your voice. I would recommend sitting outside. Service also felt a little lacking for the type of restaurant that it was. Overall I'd definitely go back and enjoy the patio next time!

Yelp
As always, everything we had was delicious. I was a little upset to start because they didn't have any espresso to make a martini. Not pictured, we started with the calamari and burrata. Both great choices! We had the fish dish, which was grouper that night, and the hanger steak. The steak portion was a little small for anyone expecting more meat. Service was great. Our waiter was very attentive. We set outside and despite being a little chilly the heaters made it more comfortable.

Yelp
Every time I go to Bettola I'm stuck on if I get pasta or pizza. This time I went with the za! I got the Bietola cause I love a fried egg on anything. It slapped. The trendy rustic vibe inside is one of my favorites and the rigatoni is a must-try

Yelp
A wonderful evening spent at Bettola! The burrata is a MUST. The warm bread on top is delicious, thick, and a great pairing for the burrata. The burrata is my favorite in town. I tried the special frozen aperol spritz which was fantastic. Service is exceptional. A lovely Italian dinner in town!

Yelp
Really nice staff, and the food was top tier! Went with some friends for the first time and I was recommended the pasta which was the best choice!

Yelp
Visited Bettola lastnight with my sister. The staff was attentive and friendly. The space is really cute if you have not been. There is inside and outside seating, a bar and a large dining room area. We ordered the burrata, carbonara and tiramisu. All items were great and arrived at our table quickly. The chewiness of freshly made pasta always make me happy. The star of the show was absolutely the tiramisu though. Smooth, balanced sweetness and the espresso was perfect. I'd come just to order that alone.

Yelp
I walk pass this place at-least three times a week, I've even been inside to purchase a gift card for someone else! However, my first time dining was on a crowded Wednesday during lunch time. The inside is smaller than I expected but cute and quaint. I met two friends at Betolla and we all ordered the Quattro formaggi which I really enjoyed. I added steak for my protein. One of my friends sent their meal back because the portion was small. My friends stated that the pastas flavor was strong, likely due to the Gorgonzola. I agree about their flavor remark; however, my palate is pretty familiar with Gorgonzola so I was in heaven. I was sad that they didn't have cocktails during the day but maybe that was a sign I didn't need it. Overall I would return to try some of their dinner options, especially the pizzas which looked incredible.

Yelp
Bettola is a stunning place to get Italian food in downtown. Found in pepper place, this spot is a favorite for an after work dinner. You HAVE to start with the fluffy warm flatbread accompanied by burrata. You can not go wrong with any of the pastas or pizzas, but my favorite is the Quattro formaggio pasta, with your choice of meat. They also have an amazing tiramisu, one of my favorites in Birmingham. The servers are friendly, helpful - they even re-did one of the pasta dishes a friend ordered since it wasn't up to the store standard. It is a cozy, intimate spot, make sure to set it up.

Yelp
I gave this restaurant multiple chances, but it did not get better. On my first lunch visit, I ordered the Sugo di Pomodoro; it was so salty that I literally started salivating. I had to balance it out with their insalata mista, which was good. On another visit, I ordered their Pollo Pomodoro. The meal was fine, but that's it. I preferred their burrata and drinks more than my meals. However, my biggest complaint is the service. One time, the waiter was rushing us to make our order, as they only had a few orders of chicken left. There were small flying roach-like bugs in the restaurant, which constantly flew around or landed on our table. With several great restaurant options in walkable distance, I would choose another spot.

Yelp
This place has always been a favorite, but the service was super slow the last time we were here. The waiter could have cared less about our dining experience. The food was still wonderful! We started with the warm burrata with freshly baked house bread. Always divine! Then we ordered the rigatoni, Bolognese and a margarita pizza. Super delicious Neapolitan style pizza is really the highlight of this restaurant. The pasta was a little gummy, and the flavor of the sauce was a little off. But we still had a wonderful evening!

Yelp
Love this place!! My husband and I have been here twice and have been very happy both times. Definitely love the Burrata!! And we love to get the Quattro Formaggi and add chicken and mushrooms!! So delicious!!

Yelp
Food is always great, along with service! The ambiance is perfect for a nice dinner and/or occasion. I love Bettola and would def recommend a 100%.

Yelp
We came here tonight for our anniversary. We made reservations ahead of time. Upon arrival, the host was talking on the phone and stayed on the phone for quite some time. Nobody greeted us while we waited for quite some time, so we weren't thrilled with that. Our waitress, Caroline, was great. She was so sweet and attentive! The menu was very small, but we both loved our pasta dishes. Food had a great flavor and everything tasted so fresh. My husband got the tiramisu for dessert and loved it. After everything, we paid $88 after tip. Overall, a great meal with a great location and ambiance, but not sure if it's worth the price.

Yelp
Bettola offers a delightful dining experience with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The standout dish for me was the burrata, which was incredibly creamy and paired perfectly with the fresh, hot flatbread. Additionally, the mushroom pizza was a highlight, featuring a perfectly crisp crust and rich, earthy flavors. Service was excellent, friendly and attentive!

Yelp
This place is always a hit when we come. The burrata with its flatbread is a classic. Fluffy bread with delicious slightly salty cheese. The cacio e pepe salad was tasty and refreshing, and the quattro formaggi was creamy and rich. Our server was polite and attentive and helped us accommodate a large group. The ambiance is cozy and not too loud. Great place to come if you're in the mood for a carb load!

Yelp
Sometimes you need to give a restaurant a second chance. This is hard for me because I harbor resentment. Just the way I am because food is a important part of my life. In the case of Bettola, my lovely bride forced me to give a second go. I REALLY did not want to go. I was doing great on my Keto Diet, we were losting weight to go on a cruise to Italy, and to do a cheat meal, I wanted what I thought was a better place. For those of you that read my reviews. I am honest, fair, transparent, and observative. "My meal was GREAT!!!". I was shocked because of the attitude I had going in. Let's talk about it. Food: All I am going to say is when the server offers the bread with cheese appetizer, take it. I had not had real bread in a while, this was so good. I was chilling out and now open. I ordered the steak sandwich. It had blue cheese in it and it was GREAT. Our table ordered two pizza's. Pepperoni and Sausage and peppers. The pizza's were outstanding. My sandwich came with tomato soup with was also very good. Atmosphere: Love the outside but it started to rain a bit. The inside is nice but casual. Because of the open area, it can be just a bit noisy from time to time. Still, nice place. Service: The service started out great. Then the server rarely checked back with us. My guest would have loved another drink but by the time I got the server back over we were almost done. We had such a good time we really did not care but from a review standpoint, it has to be mentioned. Conclusion: Go to this place. It is excellent. I can only cheat on my diet once a month. So, when I do have a splurge meal, I am very selective. This will be my next Cheat Meal. That is how good it was. Eat, Drink and Live well.

Yelp
I'm visiting Birmingham and the food has not disappointed. I came here for dinner while on a work trip. Our table ordered a few apps. I tried the burrata and the kale salad - both were amazing. The bread for the burrata was hot and perfect! For cocktails, I ordered the grapefruit spritz. It was good but I would have appreciated a little more grapefruit flavor. The pomodoro pasta dish I ordered was also very tasty. I didn't eat all of the cheese on top but it was great. Parking was good as there was a parking lot. The restaurant did get crowded around 7 or so. Our reservation was earlier (around 5:30). Prices were very reasonable for the quality. Overall, I had a great experience at this restaurant and would go back if I visit again.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with a friend. We got here on a weekday right at opening. It wasn't crowded at all. There is music playing but it is not too loud and the dimly lit dining area makes the restaurant so cozy. I ordered the Rigatoni Bolognese and it was amazing! The sweet waitress also found out it was my birthday and brought out the cutest tiramisu with a candle on it. She was extremely attentive the entire time and that dessert was just the cherry on top. You will have an amazing experience dining here!
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Not kid friendly at all. Our child is used to upscale dining experiences, but they made him feel like he was not welcome. They had a pasta dish with shrimp on the menu so we asked for just the shrimp as his meal. They charged us MORE for three grilled shrimp than the entree was!
google avatar

Yelp
One of Birmingham's oldest and often overlooked best restaurants with some of the best Italian inspired dishes you'll come across. If you are curious where to go on a date or business meeting rather than your "usuals" this should be your spot. Located in Pepper Place in a rad part between downtown and Lakeview with ample parking in the or on the street. Awesome outdoor seating area. Excellent wine list that rotates. Amazing pizza, pasta another entree dishes. They're open for lunch too!
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
Love it! Amazing food, great service and excellent selection of wines. They took wonderful care of us and we left happy. The space is medium noise/open concept with cozy seating. We go every visit to B'ham.

Yelp
Whenever I travel for work, I like to ask my local employees for the best spots in town. Bettola came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Bucatini Carbonara and it is quite literally the best pasta dish I've ever had. The restaurant is warm, quaint, and inviting. Also, if you're at the bar and have the pleasure of meeting Lauren, trust that she knows her stuff. Couldn't be happier with the service and overall experience.
google avatar

Krista M.

Yelp
I always wish that I could get Bettola delivered because we love the burrata and the bread that comes with it. We picked up an order and couldn't wait to eat it. The burrata was good, but not as great as we remembered. I was not happy with the Filetto Pizza we ordered. The sliced garlic was too thick to soften and mellow during the short baking time. I was picking out raw, sharp-tasting garlic with every bite.
google avatar

Sheri C.

Yelp
One of my top favs in downtown Birmingham. Located in Pepper Place area. Fabulous margarita pizza baked in the incredible wood fire oven. Excellent bar, wine list, atmosphere and service. Cannot wait to go again!!!

Elli W.

Yelp
Bettola is absolutely incredible for both lunch and dinner. The food & drinks are delicious. I really like the Bucatini Carbonara. I think it is the best pasta in Birmingham! The burrata is the most delicious burrata I have ever had.... The warm bread placed on top! The service is always exceptional. The restaurant itself is large, but never overly noisy. Parking can be an issue on weekends, but we have always found a spot nearby... you just may have to arrive a couple minutes early.
google avatar

Yelp
Top notch, upscale Italian dining in the heart of Pepper Place. Lots of seating inside and out. Pleasant vibes all around. Full bar, fantastic menu, excellent service. The kind of place that just has it all together and does it all really well. Antipasti, burrata, pastas galore, tiramisu, all the classics and then some, done well and with attention to detail. Deliciousness all across the table. Hard to go wrong. If you're in the area and looking for casual vibes and amazing Italian in a clean and tidy environment it's a no brainer. Even if you aren't in the area, it's worth going out of your way if this is the kind of food you're craving. Will definitely return. 5 stars.

Yelp
I was absolutely amazed by this meal. Selected it simply because Yelp kept suggesting it. Thanks so much Yelp! I was greeted & seated immediately. My server was outstanding. I think Suzanne is her name. Shout out to the bartender that assisted me too. He used to be in the kitchen so my compliments warmed his heart. (More later why). The Beretta cheese was crowned w/a disk of hot, fresh fluffy bread. Ahh wonderful and it made my eyes roll back in my head w/the first bite! I optioned for it to be served with my salad. It was a fresh, delicious green salad full of shaved cheese and a few nuts. I pushed them away halfway through to save room for my entree. However, it would have been a very satisfying meal. The Hanger Steak was perfectly prepared. Charred on the outside and still rare inside. The sprinklers of finishing salt was perfectly outstanding. There was no need to add any table seasoning hence why they are right not to have shakers on the table. A combination of the one of the various mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and a slice of the steak from the dish was Devine! It made me appreciate Yelp's suggestion! I requested they withheld the sauce since I dislike Basil & Mint. I didn't miss it at all. I didn't even add butter when I rewarmed my left overs later. It was still as delicious at home as it was in the restaurant. I asked Suzanne's favorite sparkling wine and I now agree with her. It was a great offering. A bartender served it to my table and asked if I was enjoying my meal? I told him how hard it was for me to select a restaurant but I was so happy with my selection. We chatted for a quick minute. He shared he used to be in the kitchen so my compliments about everything meant so much to him. It was a lovely meal and I bypassed the ice cream from the parking lot establishment afterwards since I was stuffed. This is a gem I would not have discovered had The Magic City Classic Game crowd hadn't prevented me from making reservations at my intended restaurants. Score! I look forward to going back soon. Even though my bench sitting enabled me to hear the entire conversations of the large group to my right, it's still a very romantic Italian restaurant. I much appreciate the small carafes of sweet tea and cooled water served. The only suggestion I have is a small container of extra lemons since I prefer a squeeze when my glass is refilled? This small touch prevented my server from having to run around to refill my glass every two minutes. What a wonderful touch?! Forgive my lack of pictures, it's a testimony to my meal.

Yelp
I read the reviews before I decided to visit this place. I drove up from Wetumpka area to have dinner before a nightout in Birmingham. I'm being generous giving 1 star. I was totally disappointed in the food and service. I tend to be super gracious with servers because I am one, and I know how difficult the job is. So when I say the service was awful, take that to the bank. This is an Italian restaurant by advertisement only. Usually, subtle aromas permeate the air at an Italian restaurant, yet I could not smell any garlic at all. I've poured many glasses of wine, and my glass was underpoured for the price of a house chianti ($18). I've never been to an Italian restaurant that doesn't serve bread with a pasta dish. Instead they charge ($5.50) for a "made to order flatbread" that was so tasteless...again, no garlic. It is served with a souffle tin of olive oil. I ordered the rigatoni bolognese ($22.50) the portion was a child's portion, maybe 10 rigatoni, which was so undercooked, it gave a whole different impression of "al dente". There was no parmesan available or offered. (I certanly didn't want another surcharge for extra cheese.) I was aghast when I paid the check. My server (Susan C) took my card and I watched as she left my card in the payment terminal while she served another table. She then returned, took my card and payslips then delivered another order before bringing my card to me. I left an angry note on the payslip, left and will never return.

Yelp
One of our all time faves! Love the pizzas but the #1 item for us is the budino. Yum! So good.
google avatar

Amie S.

Yelp
The food here was very good! When we went we had the calamari, which if all you have ever had is fried-I encourage you to give it a try! It has such a better flavor when prepared this way, and it was delicious. For my meal I had the Funghi de Bosco pizza, which was outstanding! Definitely one for the mushroom lover . Other members in my group had the Prosciutto Marscapone, which was wonderful also-a fantastic time for all! The feel of the restaurant was very much like you just hopped into someone's family kitchen, lots of fun! Our server was great! We had a party of 6 and she did a fantastic job!
google avatar

Aushanada W.

Yelp
Love at first sight! This place has a casual vibe where you can stop in for lunch in your yoga pants or in a super cute outfit! The food was delicious! I enjoyed a salad, pasta dish and wine! I'll def head back soon for another date with myself. The staff was cool. The hostess just did her job, nothing special. She wasn't super friendly but she wasn't mean. The server was also ok. He took my order, gave me my food and check. The noise level was ok for mid day and although it started to get busy, my food still arrived in an acceptable amount of time. Try it, I'm sure you'll enjoy!

Yelp
A more upscale restaurant for a girls-night or date-night. Large wine and drink selection. Delicious food. Professional staff. Small parking lot, some street parking.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to try Bettola after we realized that a nearby restaurant was closed for an event. We went in without reservations and were immediately sat at the bar, avoiding the 2-hour wait time on a Saturday night. The restaurant is very beautiful, and we loved the outdoor fireplace. We ordered the Kale Caesar, Margherita Pizza, and Bucatini Carbonara. The salad and pizza were pretty good, but if you prefer a crispy pizza slice, this isn't for you. The pizza dough was very thin on the bottom, and it had to be eaten on the plate. The Bucatini Carbonara was probably my least favorite dish, but I believe that I may have ordered the wrong thing given the decent quality of our other items. I have never ever had a Carbonara with a strong lemon taste and hot sausage before, and I'm not sure if I'd ever want it again. My nose was running afterwards, and I typically love spicy foods. However, both of these flavors were a complete surprise. Keep this in mind if you're visiting soon!

Lexi B.

Yelp
Tbh this was not it wouldn't go back..... the menu was pretty small. The food was not good. The pasta was too thick, not authentic tasted like jim n nicks mac n cheese my boyfriend says. The pizza was soupy not cooked in the middle. Was very underwhelming. Was hoping for more. Also was a Saturday night and wasn't busy.

Alexx R.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for a place to eat before we went to the music festival near by. We went on a Friday around noon for some drinks and lunch. The hostess who sat us was amazing! She found out we were from out of town and gave us a bunch of suggestions for places to eat and things to do. Kale Caesar is one of my favorite salads. This was legit the best Kale Caesar I have ever had. The dressing was so flavorful and the kale was fully coated in it...also the grated parm on top...bomb.

Yelp
The carbonara is...chef's kiss! I came here for my birthday dinner and truly enjoyed the ambiance, pasta, and wine! Highly recommend!

Ethan H.

Yelp
Amazing prosciutto marscopone pizza with excellent service! The inside of the restaurant is particularly pretty with neat wood accents. I love visiting this area of town and it is now on my rotation of favorites!

Marshall W.

Yelp
Excellent food and excellent service. Decided to split the pizza and we finished everything. Everything tasted homemade and fresh. Will be back when we come back to Birmingham.
google avatar

Trudy J.

Yelp
Our wood fired pizza was a soggy mess. Our server had it remade with less cheese and it helped but still had to be eaten with a fork. So disappointing. We dined in for lunch and if we go back will try the pasta even though there are only two options. Outside seating looked inviting and ready for dinner customers. Why not turn the glasses over so they don't fill with whatever is in the air only to be filled with water in a few hours?

Mary K.

Yelp
Food was great!!! So delicious. Was a little annoyed when our waiter kept trying to have us get the buttata appetizer (for $16) instead of just the bread we ordered. I'm sure it would've been good but we told him we had already had apps at home beforehand. I would go back!
google avatar

Pamela V.

Yelp
No idea how the food is - could not get seated & restaurant empty. Host stand is next to main & apparently only door. So the servers constantly bumped disabled guest trying to be seated. Bar was closed ??? So, we had to wait for host. Host was busy taking a to go order and answering menu questions. After being TOLD "I'll be with you in a few minutes", we left. Would not recommend.

Yelp
Great place! Love the food and the atmosphere. We will totally be back. great date nighplace too!

Sarah J.

Yelp
Some of the best Italian food in Birmingham! And the lasagna is amazing. Great wine list too!

Nia B.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. I would give this dish 11/10. It was very creamy and had a lot of flavor. The service was great as well.

Kathryn M.

Yelp
The food is amazing! My girlfriends and I ordered the burrata and flat bread to share and let me tell you, it was so good, I would've been happy with just that! Their pasta is pretty great too. The pasta tastes fresh and made in house. Our server was also great. He was always there refilling our water glasses and our wine glasses. We sat outside in the patio and it felt very rustic with the wood fire and market lights. I would definitely recommend this place for date nights!
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
Food is great. Ambiance is nice. Outside space is sweet if weather is good. The rigatoni is always delicious.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
What a treat! The restaurant is styled in a way that feels indoor/outdoor (not because of the outdoor seating) but the very large window by the front and it created a feel that was very inviting. The service was wonderful and helpful. Ordered the burrata and flatbread and it was fantastic. Then the cacio e pepe salad (I was hesitant bc that is ordinarily a pasta dish) and it was so so good. Followed by splitting the quattro formaggi pasta (good and tasty but the pizza) and the funghi de bosoco pizza which was bomb! Happy to have stumbled upon this place
google avatar

Hanna S.

Yelp
Yum! I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and am so glad that I did! Their prosciutto rucola panino was to die for. The homemade mozzarella and bread were so fresh and delicious. Overall very happy with the lunch- will definitely be craving in the future!

Yelp
Great food along with superior service. We had the appetizer that's like a charcuterie board and each element was way beyond expectations. Our waiter, Caleb, treats you like a celebrity. The pizza was insanely good with its pizza oven crust. We each ordered the pasta. Freshly made pasta - OMG Heaven. Got this restaurant recommendation from a nice local lady we met at a cat cafe since we were just driving through.

Yelp
This was such an amazing dinner!! We started with the Burrata which I HIGHLY recommend. This bread is so fresh and deliciously unique. The dip was yummy as well. We also started with the Antipasti Board. Fantastic as well!!! I ordered the Kale Caesar Salad with steak. I have to say I'm a steak snob and typically don't like anything but filet but I was blown away at how great the steak was despite not being filet. The pollo pizza was so well done. Cocktails were fabulous which said a lot about the bartender since we ordered drinks not on the menu. I absolutely can't believe I haven't tried this gem sooner and I can't wait to go back. The patio seating is plentiful and the weather was amazing. What a wonderful dining experience.
