Best Dim Sum Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Big Ma’s Kitchen, the San Gabriel Valley’s newest dim sum and Cantonese barbecue restaurant, brings something fresh to Rosemead with a menu full of unique and harder-to-find dishes. Ordering is done off the menu—no pushcarts here—a style that many dim sum lovers associate with higher-quality, freshly steamed items. While Big Ma’s doesn’t brand itself strictly as a dim sum specialist, its selection is impressive. You’ll find standout offerings like Shunde-style grainless hot pot congee, osmanthus honey puff pastry cakes, purple yam mochi balls with salted egg yolk custard, and red rice rolls with cruller and shrimp paste. There’s also an extensive roast meats section—think suckling pig and crispy squab—alongside refined Cantonese desserts like steamed papaya with bird’s nest. As the new kid in town, Big Ma’s is positioning itself as a serious contender in the SGV dim sum scene. The variety and quality across the menu make it a solid destination, especially for diners eager to try dim sum that goes beyond the usual hits." - Kristie Hang

I was on the way to pick up some dim sum from my local spot when I saw this store was happening a soft opening. I looked up the menu and saw they have BBQ pork buns (chat siu buns) and had to give them a shot. The baked BBQ pork buns was pretty good. The steamed BBQ buns were fluffy but I liked the baked ones better. I also bought egg tarts, siu mai, red bean sesame balls and taro cake. Overall a not bad experience. Will be back only for the buns, otherwise everything else was mid.

Just swung by Big Ma’s Kitchen in Rosemead after spotting it on a YouTube review, it does lived up to the buzz! They’re running a sweet deal this week with all dim sum at $5.59, so we showed up at 11:15 AM and grabbed a seat right away. By the time we left, though, there was a crowd waiting outside, so definitely get there early. We ordered five dim sum dishes, including our go-to sticky rice in lotus leaf wrap, baked BBQ pork buns, red rice noodle-wrapped fried dough, cocktail buns, and a bowl of bird’s nest with papaya soup. Every bite was fire—especially those fluffy, flavorful baked buns. The food was straight-up amazing, with the sticky rice being savory and fragrant and the cocktail buns adding a fun, sweet twist. The bird’s nest soup felt like a fancy treat, light and refreshing. Service was top-notch, too—the reception hostess was super sharp and made us feel right at home. They’ve got a takeout counter with dim sum at special prices, and a whole roasted duck for under $35? That’s a no-brainer. The vibe was bustling but cozy, perfect for a dim sum feast. We’re already hyped to come back and dive into their regular menu for lunch or dinner—sticky rice with chili crab or lobster is next on our list. Would love to meet Justine, aka Big Ma, and hear his story. If you’re in Rosemead, this spot’s a must-hit for killer dim sum and great vibes. Just don’t sleep on it, ‘cause it gets packed quick!

Service is good food not bad but too expensive.

Google
Visited to go side during soft opening and food was nice enough, chose vegetable items for 2 item rice plate, eggplant in a slightly spicy brown sauce and Chinese broccoli. The broccoli, gai lan I think it's called, was sitting in the same container as green beans with what looked like ground pork; I'm not a strict vegetarian so this didn't bother me. What did bother me is not being able to tell where the line started, so I watched someone who came in after me get served first. I don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese so there was a language barrier. It's always unpleasant to be ignored because of a language barrier.

Google
This place just opened today. It has excellent dim sum and bbq. The price is also affordable

Yelp
Hard to get parking, but at least there's plenty of street parking. Came on a Sunday morning for dim sum. Place was packed but we got seated right away. Categories A-C were still $5.59. We got the 荷香糯米鷄 or Sticky Lotus Rice Wrap, 爆汁小籠包 or Xiao Long Bao, 鮮蝦韭菜餃 or Fresh Shrimp And Chive Dumplings, 黑椒牛仔骨 or Black Pepper Short Ribs, and 蚝皇鮮竹卷 or Bean Curd Skin Wrap. Sitting fee was $2.50 per person. The tea was weak and disappointing. The 荷香糯米鷄 or Sticky Lotus Rice Wrap was pretty good, but they used a lot of fat instead of meat. The 爆汁小籠包 or Xiao Long Bao was probably frozen and steamed. Not amazing. The 鮮蝦韭菜餃 or Fresh Shrimp And Chive Dumplings was good and the favorite. The 黑椒牛仔骨 or Black Pepper Short Ribs was sweet and good. The 蚝皇鮮竹卷 or Bean Curd Skin Wrap was alright. Liked that they remodeled the place. Also like the dishware they were using.

Yelp
If you are looking for large, juicy, har how, this the place to come! We drove past this place and saw the special dim sum pricing of $5.59 for their grand opening and decided to give it a try. All of the items could've been a little more well seasoned, but we were not disappointed in the quality and portions. This restaurant has beautiful marble tables, comfy seats and engineered wood flooring...definitely not your traditional table cloth covered tables with sticky carpet...oops, the larger tables are still with a big table top and covered with a table cloth. No carts pushing the dim sum items to your table. Order off the menu and they cheerfully bring it out, piping hot from the kitchen. They also have a to go side with dim sum, combo plates and your traditional roast duck. roast pork and char siu. All look delicious. Can't wait to bring some home to try Ambiance is what you expect of a Chinese restaurant. Dishes clanking in the kitchen and the dining room is Noisy with families happily enjoying their time together. Definitely worth trying

Yelp
Came here with my dad for dim sum. They currently run a grand opening special that is $5.59 for all dim sum items. We've eaten a lot of dim sum in the SGV and this stacks up with what we consider the mid tier. It's good and on par with many others, but nothing stands out. Items have minimal meat/protein and more filler. For example, lotus wrap rice is a good size and wrapped well but has a lot of rice but lower ratio of meat filling. Same with hom sui gok. Delicious chewy outside, but light on filling. We only ordered dim sum so it's possible that their other non-dim sum items/dishes are better. Not a bad spot at all and a good deal, but fairly average. Parking lot gets full and is a pain. Parking on the side streets is easier.

Yelp
I have been coming for getting to go. They have a good variety of readymade dishes and switches it up occasionally. They have good service and dishes and dim sum tastes good. I think from 3pm, their dim sum is B2GO free.

Yelp
Big Ma's Kitchen opened a little over 2 months ago, and I finally got around to trying them out. They really gutted the interior, and to be honest-- it's alright, I feel like eliminating the open space plan was not the brightest idea because the space feels more small and tight. I want to caution that it's pricy for both dim sum and tea seat price. However, the food itself was pretty good. We got a couple of dim sum items and my favorite being the pork blood and leek one. My parents love their jok (rice porridge) that they had to order it again the next time they came by.

Yelp
Mmm Big Ma serves not only dim sum, but also chinese bbq! They sell roast pork, roast duck, char siu, chinese sausage, and more. As for the dim sum, my favorites are the siu mai, rice roll with crueller, pan fried radish cake, salted egg yolk bao, and egg tarts. I would definitely come back for their dim sum. They also have really good tea. The interior gives an intimate feel, although smaller than other dim sum restaurants but the seating is comfortable and the manager Justin was always checking in on us to see if we needed anything :) If you want to host any family gathering or get togethers/work lunches, you can make a reservation with them to reserve a private dining room, which can fit a large group of people. They have a couple private dining rooms. Big Ma is located in the same plaza with Del Mar Supermarket, on Garvey/Del Mar cross street.

Yelp
The decor are comfortable, nice, and clean. Love the big screen tv to watch the game and saw the biggest table that can seats 17. Services are fast and very nice staff. The tilapia dish is spot on with cantonese flavor. Like the sauce for the chili crab-hard fried cold bread on the dish is not needed. Pork belly is salty than what I use to but skin is crispy. King pao chicken is the nicest presentation I seen. Overall, a very nice and intimate dining experience.

Yelp
My family and I used to go to the old Jade Seafood Restaurant that was once in the same building. Big Ma's Kitchen has since remodeled the place to really modernize the restaurant. While keeping the same idea of family dine-in and a BBQ take-out restaurant, the building feels a smaller and is divided in multiple rooms. My family and I ordered five dishes: Roast Duck, Roast Pork, Green Bean Stir Fry with Steak, Spicy Salted Calamari, and Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables. Each dish was an average of $19 each. Rice was ordered and charged separately. The duck and both pork dishes were really tough to eat and overly salty. The skin on the roast pork was delicious and crispy. The calamari was a little bland with a sprinkle of seasoning similar to a tea shop's popcorn chicken. My favorite dish was the green bean stir fry. Green beans were crisp and beef was tender. The staff were attentive and all the dishes came out really quick. Service in general was very quick, which I can't complain. Overall, the food seems very over priced for what it is. We did see there was dim sum and I plan on trying that.

Yelp
I decided to take the family to eat dim sum for lunch after watching Big Ma's Kitchen on YouTube. Although there is plenty of parking here, it can be hard to find a spot. This place is really busy, with every table full. The wait time was manageable, though; we were seated in fifteen minutes. The jasmine hot tea smells wonderful, and the cup and plate settings are nice. I love this place. The food here is delicious, and we ordered a lot of dim sum in generous servings. This place has fast and great service. I would highly recommend this place for dim sum.

Yelp
Should be named Little Ma's Kitchen instead of Big Ma's LOLOL. No but seriously their portion sizes for family style are a JOKE. Super stingy portions for a Cantonese Asian Fusion restaurant. Their food was good but it wasn't delivered to the table HOT. The temperature was just warm and we had to order more food for our table of 12 because their portion sizes are stingy and small. 2 stars, not worth the price for the small family style portions no matter how good the food tastes. There are more options out there in this cuisine that get you more bang for your buck.

Yelp
I ordered half chicken but $20. The food portions so little even with crispy pork. When I went home and looked at the receipt, i cant believe i just spent almost $70 for this. The foods are good, but the one on new street is better. I just tried to support but Im not happy.

Yelp
A total makeover from the last restaurant. Half sit-in and half takeout, similar to Sam Woo. The place is very small and just opened, seven regular tables and two private rooms. Decor is higher class so it's a comfortable environment. Food was pretty good! The garlic shrimp ($20.99) was my favorite, genuinely big shrimps with a tasty sauce. Came with 12 pieces and a hint of wasabi, so beware if you don't like that. The veggie soup with fish balls ($16.99) was nothing really special. Light in flavor but refreshing. Sweet and sour pork ($18.99) tasted like any other, we only ordered it because they were completely sold out of their roast bbq dishes. They gave us a coconut pudding as a sweet treat. Will come back to try their dim sum!
google avatar

Yelp
Very expensive dimsum and tea seat price. Very small restaurant, with the bathroom right next to the kitchen and right in back of where the staff usually stand. Food quality is lacking, many dishes bland. The fish congee has a very fishy dirty flavor. The truffle sui mai has no truffle flavor, but when we told them, they did take it back (even the half bitten ones already on our plate). I would definitely not go here for dim sum, but the kitchen dishes that other tables got looked and smelled good. The setting plates and bowls were very nice and fancy. The waiters were attentive in filling tea and clearing empty dishes, but the managers did not seem very friendly.

Adam L.

Yelp
Great food and good prices! Came a little bit after lunch, yet they still had a lot of dim sum options available. Employee can speak Cantonese so they responded quickly to what I wanted to order. Not too busy, and also has a dining area for restaurant styled food. Parking - a lot but shares it with a supermarket

Yelp
Just picked up a Too Good To Go order from here. First time coming in and the people working were very nice and friendly. My surprise bag came with a very generously portioned meal of steamed rice, THREE (I REPEAT, THREEEEE) meat mains, and 2 veg portions (broccoli and I think bitter melon in a sauce). Everything was delicious. I wonder what I'll get in the next surprise box! Oh and it also came with a giant sesame ball filled with red bean for dessert. Thinking of coming in another time to try their other offerings like the dim sum and their bbq meats as a patron :) All in all, solid TGTG experience!

Yelp
This is a new restaurant that recently replaced the Jade Seafood & BBQ Restaurant. I went to the To Go side and ordered two items. Total was be about $11, which is more expensive than other dim sum spots that I frequent. For the price, the siu mai should be bigger in my opinion.

Yelp
I entered from the front entrance and was greeted by eager waitresses who showed me to the back for takeout. One person who looked like a manager smdif not seem pleased to see me walking through. He said come through the back. So if doing takeout park in the lot behind the restaurant. The restaurant dining area is nicely decorated with table cloth and sectioned into two making it look quite cramp. There were entrees for takeout and lots of dim sum. To pay via credit card I had to buy over $30. I also got a small box of sweet and sour pork. So my two cents: pork ribs, beef tripe, Sui mai, beef rice wrap were just ok, nothing unusual. The beef balls are dry and so salty I would not recommend it. The entrees look appealing. My sweet and sour pork tasted good and tender. I will update when .y sister has tasted shrimp dumplings and lotus wrap.

Yelp
We got three dishes. Singapore style lobster, beef/green beans, and a sample trio of duck/cha sui pork, and crispy pork. All of us thought the lobster was amazing. The sauce was slightly spicy, slightly sweet, and a perfect consistency. Really amazing over rice. Green beans were smokey, charred, and with a perfect crisp remaining. Beef was super tender and tasty. Overall had a great experience, the place felt clean, and the price was quite reasonable for a sit down spot.

Yelp
Brand new interior with fancy tables and elegant turntables but the food portions are below average. Service is quick which is an anomaly in most Chinese restaurants. They leave these geometric gold water pitchers on the turntables for convenience, a nice touch. My husband thought the large pieces of beef in the chow fun was different and tastier than other places. However, the whole roast duck was cold and had very little meat, just skin. It arrived on a chafing plate, to make it warmer, perhaps. The walnut shrimp had large shrimps and a good portion of walnuts, but the portion was small. The Big Ma Special Noodles had rice vermicelli, like Singapore Noodles, without the curry. It was actually adequately sized. The dining room became noisier as the meal progressed. Also, this restaurant opens at 5 pm for dinner.

Yelp
Delicious food and various choices. Great services. The owner Justin is so nice. For sure, I will be back. Highly recommended!

Yelp
pretty good food, have a promotion going on where all the a,b,c dishes are the same price. will come back

Yelp
Super clean spot with great service. Food came out fast and everything we ordered was delicious. Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
This review is just for the char sui (BBQ pork.) The cut they use appears to be pork jowls. Perfect balance of meat and fat. The texture is to die for. Not too sweet and not too salty. Orange in color. I hope they never change this. It's the first time I've had this. I'll be back!

Yelp
Super busy, but expected due to being a Saturday at a fairly recent opening. Service wasn't the best and I had to call over the waiter to place our orders and get a check, which was also made harder with the dining area being super packed and loud. Yunnan Mushroom Fish Maw Soup ($11.99) - 3/5 The soup was super rich, but was still clean. However, the soup came out after we got our entire meal when they usually come out before. When we got the soup, it was lukewarm and we could tell it had been sitting out for a bit. Macau Braised Pork Belly ($18.99) - 1/5 Extremely disappointing presentation, could easily find better pork belly elsewhere for cheaper too. The pork belly skin wasn't crispy and also felt like this dish was sitting out for a second. Mapo Tofu ($16.99) - 1/5 Although the dish looked solid at first, but the sauce was way too watery and didn't taste like anything. There was also close to no meat in the mapo tofu. Likely the worst mapo tofu I've ordered in the area. Overall, there are way better options in the 626 area to find a Chinese sit down restaurant for celebrations or authentic meals. There is a to go dim sum service at the back, but would not go back to try this after my disappointing experience.

Yelp
Went there for lunch. Opened up recently. Place is very clean and the food was delicious. A must try.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant today. Ordered 6 dishes including dim sum. Made mistakes 3 times. Taste was average. When paying the bill, the waiter asked for 18% tip. No. Basic tip is still required. But we came here to eat well, not to solve the problem of food Disappointed.这个地方吃饱没有问题 但是吃好就差一点。

Isaac W.

Yelp
Improvement is needed. A sign in the to-go area reads line starts here with 2 arrows pointing to the far left and far right. If people ever tell you to get lost, come here and you'll get lost. The 2 female to-go counter workers are rude. They talk back and insult customers when asked what food do they have. They will reply you by saying can't you read the menu. Lastly, shumai is filled with too much fat. It should not be more than 1:1 fat to lean ratio. Maybe it's workmanship that's bad. I can see the fat hanging out like the homeboys on my block.
google avatar

Levin L.

Yelp
The shumai we bought last week for take out did not look identical to the ones we bought today. The wrap wasn't as bright yellow as last week and it seem'd like they been sitting overnight and reheated for our order. I wish I had taken a photo of the order last week, but it looked too good to not eat it instantly.

Yelp
This a fairly new food spot that open up in the SGV. My family loves coming here since they have good food and friendly service. I would highly recommend the beet shrimp paste rice roll and the football fried dumplings. For dessert if you haven't tried their egg tarts it is a must. So buttery and so flaky. I always have to order extra to-go. If you are willing to splurge a little I would recommend their bird nest in papaya. It's so delicious and so refreshing. Being pregnant eating bird nests in the Chinese culture it is kinda a must. It's definitely fresh and super delicious. Just remember to order at least 40 minutes ahead since it does take some time to make it but you won't regret it. I still craved for it til this day.

David T.

Yelp
Honestly, zero stars if I could. Stopped in with my grandma after running errands hoping to grab a small bite to eat and the moment we walked in two lady cashiers eyed my grandma down and started talking behind her back completely forgetting that I was there. After browsing the food for a bit my grandma just decided to buy a small drink but the moment she pulled out cash both ladies laughed and said that she was cheap and yelled at her when she was taking her time counting her coins to give to them. Living in the San Gabriel Valley we are accustomed to how each of the Asian diaspora talk and communicate with their customers but this was just straight up disrespectful. Never coming back here again even if this was the last restaurant on Earth

Helena C.

Yelp
Clean. Nice services. Excellent foods. Easy to find the location. Parking spot is wider not a compact space

Virginia C.

Yelp
Don't waste your time or money. There is nothing special about this place. Food is fine but way overpriced for the quality. The space is small and cramped. Service is terrible Our party had ordered the red rice shrimp roll and when it came out it was cold. There was no shrimp in it at all and I mean none. Just fried dough. We noticed another table had ordered the same dish and their rolls were filled with shrimp paste. When we pointed this out to the owner, he quickly dismissed us telling us that we were wrong without even checking our dish!! This interaction completely ruined the rest of the meal. Because of this, we chose not to tip and when the host checked us out, he asked why we did not tip. I told them how we were not satisfied about the shrimp roll dish and the rude owner. Let's be real, in the SGV when there's an abundance of affordable and delicious restaurants, this place misses the mark tremendously.

Pete Y.

Yelp
Tried there take out dim sum, during the week M-F most dishes 4.99 while siew mai , hai gow, naw mai gaw 5.26 Week ends and holidays everything 5.46 while siew mai, hai gow, naw mai gaw 5.76 good size dim sum and tasty as good as other dim sum places. Try it out!
google avatar

Lina N.

Yelp
Food was so good! The place is super clean and new. Would definitely recommend bringing family here to dine in or just grabbing take out!

Christina W.

Yelp
Came here to pick up a too goo to go order and the girl in the front was very rude. I told her it's my first time here and don't understand where she's pointing at. I start walking to the direction she's pointing at and follows me yelling something in Chinese when I just looked back at her and told her I don't speak Chinese obviously that's why I don't understand you. So based on service I would never even come back to this restaurant again, as for food due to the crappy service I'm sure it will be horrible. Don't come here!

Danny L.

Yelp
The ambiance is good as was the service for your standard upscale restaurant. However the food was disappointing. We came in here looking for some decent dim sum and the first dish served to us that was ordered was pigs blood and chives ( it was cold) this left a horrible first impression as it was our first dish. The other dim sums were also subpar as most of them were somewhat bland and needing a bit of salt. When checking out it was efficient however the waiter presses a 18% tip without us choosing how much we wanted to tip.Luckily we were able to catch it in time. Maybe their stir fried dishes are better then their dim dim but from what we experienced that day was not good

Anna P.

Yelp
Cashier added tip before we paid on a takeout. Luckily we caught it before we paid. They just opened and are already being unethical. Be careful.
