The Best Filipino Restaurants in London: Where to Eat Filipino Food | Eater London

"Tucked away in Camden, Bintang has been in the neighbourhood for over 35 years. Its pandesal sliders — a starter that feels like a main — are made from short rib patties, smashed on the grill with toyomansi, a condiment of soy sauce and calamansi, and sandwiched in pandesal buns with onions from the grill. Bintang also offers four variations of silog — a union of garlic fried rice and egg — with the choice of bistek, baby aubergine, beef and lamb sausage, or fried milkfish." - Juli Suazo

Incredible food and great service! Every dish here is absolutely delicious and I can’t believe this place isn’t more busy. Definitely try the hot honey prawns, slider, and lamb curry. One of my favourite restaurants now, will definitely be back! Such good value.

Found this place on instagram and am i glad i went. Seating area was small and it was busy so we sat at the bar, however it was clean and plenty of space to eat, first time for everything. The food was spectacular, prices were what you expect from restaurants in London, so understandably fairly priced but more to the high side. Service was brilliant, for a busy bank holiday weekend it was solid. Will definitely be coming again, a well deserved 5/5 stars

Google
10/10 no notes we got the lamb rendang, beef sisig, caracao wings, oxtail kare kare, rice, three drinks, and two desserts- everything was so so delicious. it’s a little pricey but so worth it for a special dinner. we went at five and it was quiet empty, not to mention the gorgeous music playing.

We had some pretty unique Filipino dishes here, the fried rice and sizzling beef in particular were pretty good. Prices are a little on the higher side and service wasn't the quickest though.

The food was great and the service was good. I’d recommend any of the food for sure and I’d come back again. The Oak chicken, dirty rice, the sliders and Filipino Lamb is what we got and it was all great!!

I recently visited Bintang on a Wednesday evening with two friends to celebrate a birthday, and our experience was exceptional from start to finish. TL;DR: incredibly friendly staff, good vibes and really unique flavour in each of the dishes. (& it’s halal!) Upon arrival, we were seated at the bar, which was both comfortable and had a vibrant, lively atmosphere. The staff are friendly and their banter was on point - setting a welcoming and enjoyable tone for the evening. The food was outstanding, with each dish featuring unique and memorable flavours that exceeded my expectations. The creativity and quality of the dishes truly stood out. As a delightful surprise, the staff sang "Happy Birthday" to my friend, adding a special touch to our celebration. To cap off the evening, we ordered desserts from Mamasons, and the accommodating staff happily brought them over for us. Thank you SO much for a wonderful evening.

Had a great dinner here during the week. We got a few dishes as the food was served “small plates” style and was so flavourful. We were also lucky enough to arrive during happy hour and the cocktails were fantastic too. It was all topped off by super friendly staff and great service. Only real caveat is that the restaurant itself is a little on the smaller side, but in a a cosy and intimate way.

Recently visited with my work colleagues in celebration of the team winning our Cocktail Competition. We have such a great night. The ambience in the place was very intimate. The service from all staff members, especially Angel was exceptional. We had a plate of small nibbles along with various small plates and different mains, so that we could get a taste of it all. We also ordered signature cocktail and virgin cocktails, which were also amazing. We finished off with dessert which was a great end to such an amazing meal. I could not recommend this place enough and will ve coming back in the near future.

Yelp
The food is amazing. We are visiting from USA, California to be exact & discovering this gem was a win. The service was great and the ambiance is super chill and laid back. I would call ahead to make a reservation.

Yelp
Staff was absolutely great! Couldn't have felt more welcome. Didn't love the cash only aspect, which was odd since there was an ask for £10 per person on a credit card to make a reservation. Started w/ the Adobo wings. Such a fun spin on the classic dish. 4 pieces seem scrimpy at the price though - 6 would've been better. The Kare kare sauce was the highlight. Sooo peanutty. But I'm not sure if we got shafted, as my friend and I only had one piece of oxtail EACH. The dirty fried rice was such a joy. And kept us filled. So much goodness. Like an elevated comfort food that we've all had. Lastly the Roti Chanai. Was a bit hesitant, as I don't think I've ever seen roti on a Filipino menu. Don't typically gravitate towards 'trendy' dishes, but whatever is in the Bintang sauce was an absolute 10. Just make sure to get 2 more orders of roti to not only wipe up the Bintang sauce but the Kare Kare sauce as well.

Yelp
We are visiting from the New York and stopped in for a late evening meal. We're a huge fan of BYOB restaurants back home so this was a great selling point. The back garden was very pleasant and the food was exceptional and affordable, at least compared to what we are used to.

Yelp
We were planning to try somewhere else last night, but i was so intrigued by Bintang's menu, that we stopped here instead. I am reeeally glad that we did! Bingtang is squished into a teeny, slightly hipsterish café, with a relaxed atmosphere and chilled music. The menu is a mix of Korean, Taiwanese and South east Asian dishes. There seems to be a Japanese influence, but no Japanese food. Food: **** Gua Bao - Oh my goodness I want this again! These are fluffy steamed Taiwanese buns filled with meat (the duck was particularly gorgeous), peanuts and a hint of wasabi. They were seriously moorish! **** Korean Chicken wings - fried with really tasty seasoning, then dunked in sesame, they come with barbecue sauce . These were soooo good, The meat fell off the bones it was sooo tender. Om nom nom. I didn't take a photo because we ate them so speedily. Oops. *** Prawn tempura - the batter wasn't really tempura, it was thiner/crunchier but still yummy. These prawns were slathered in wasabi mayo, but also came with a soy-based dip. I did like them, but they didn't blow me away like the gua boa or chicken wings. *** The bintang noodles were also pretty nice - slightly spicy, and the lemongrass gave them a delicious fresh flavour. **Marc's tip** Single men should come to this restaurant! Last night it was crammed with groups of really pretty girls (apart from us!!) **Pro-yelp tip** If you check in between 5-7pm, you can get a starter and a main for £10. Bargain!!

Yelp
A small, dimly lit cafe in the middle of a slightly shady part of the Kentish Town Road serving Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian and Singaporian cuisine. The lighting in the restaurant is perfect and the teak and bamboo walls make it an intimate location for a romantic date. The menu is quite extensive but luckily prices are so low that you can afford to get a few extra dishes and share them between you. A massive plus for me is that they operate a bring-your-own alcohol policy, which keeps the prices down hugely.

Yelp
I live not far away from bintang. For 2 years, I walk by this place at least few times a week and never went in. Gotta admit this place looks a bit shady from the outside. Out of curiosity however, my bf and I went in for dinner one day. Bam! It immediately became one of our most favorite neighborhood places. Great dishes include: 1. Shrimp tempura - interesting mix of mango salsa, fish roe and crispy shrimp. 2. Seabass- we like both of the seabass dishes. 3. Lamb rengtang: slightly hot, lots of spice. Yum. 4. Brussel sprout: simply yum! The service is friendly but slightly slow... Oh well. You can bring your own bottle with a small corkage fee as they don't serve alcohol.

Yelp
I'd heard good things and the reviews aren't bad which I think made my disappointment with Bintang greater. The venue is quite funky and it there was a constant flow of people which I guess means people like this place but I just wasn't impressed. We started with the Gao bao that seemed to get quite a lot of love in other reviews, the bun was chewy as was the duck...overall not great. Moving on to the Sisak curry, this again came with chewy meat (beef this time), a bit of gristle / bone didn't help much either it had a Panang kind of taste but was definitely missing something..... Perhaps a bit more sweetness? There was a good amount of heat to it though served on fried rice which was ok(ish). The last thing was the pad Thai which was stodgy and not too generous on the prawns. Two meals, gao bao's and corkage for a beer each came to £35, which felt like quite a lot for what we ate. Don't think it'll make my regular list, shame.

Yelp
Unfortunately I can't say anything about the restaurant because I ordered take-away, but I'm still allowed a review right? I wouldn't have written one if it was bad, but the Prawn Laksa dish was absolutely wonderful. Full of bold, delicious flavours and massive shrimp. A really big portion, I was impressed.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING!!! The dishes here are so well thought out and the flavors are delicious. Not to mention, the decor and ambiance just sets the place so well. If I lived here in the UK, I'd be here all the time. Definitely recommend this place to anyone coming to London!!
google avatar

Yelp
The Bintang noodles recipe doesn't really work. Coconut noodles with raw onions and tomato? What is this recipe? I can't believe this is Malaysian. Not a very successful recipe for a dish listed as a special. Chicken satay was ok, but not at all authentic. Lamb rendang was quite good, but lacked the depth of flavour I w

Yelp
Bintang in Kentish Town is the little spot with a big voice. Further up from the tourist mecca and party paradise that is Camden, is this star. Yes, in Indonesia Bintang means star, so star by name, star by nature. What first strikes you is just how down to earth the place is. It is certainly not about being the great pretender here. Out goes the fancy schmancy decor or attempt at too much Asian design authenticity; what remains is real and raw with an emphasis on practicality and comfort. There is even a secret garden at the back if you fancy braving the ever changing UK elements. The restaurant opens onto Kentish Town Road so your entertainment is a mixture of your dining companions, fellow diners and the colourful characters that sashay past the window. Kentish Town is very residential. This bit specifically, is quite urban, so there is a melting pot of class and culture who live side by side. Bintang appears to follow the same theme with a diverse Asian menu covering places like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. What they have done here is taken the best bits of what is the largest continent and put it in a pretty little package for you to enjoy near the comfort of your own home. No long haul flights for this treat. There are a couple of things to note about this magical place. You can bring your own wine and pay corkage of £5 a bottle. Conveniently, there is an off licence two doors down. They only accept cash. Again, the off licence ticks that box with its machine which unfortunately charges £1.89. Now the basics are covered (and you have booked a table because it is popular), you can settle down to scan through the menu. As I said, the menu is like the Eastern portion of the Silk Route (an ancient trade route from China to Europe specialising in Chinese Silk). For my starter I went for chicken and spring onion dumplings (Chinese). Now this gyoza was very interesting, in that it was much slimmer and transparent than ones I have had before. In fact, I really enjoyed it as the filling was as prominent as the sticky case holding it together. Jacki had salt and pepper squid with taramind (Chinese). Delish with lashings of lime squeezed over it. My original main was supposed to be the baby chicken inasal, which is a pandan marinated dish from the Philippines with notes of lemongrass, ginger and soy. Unfortunately they had already served the last portion, so having pouted a little, I got over it and ordered Pad Thai. Yes, I know that this is the go-to asian option more most people, so one should be more experimental. Especially when one is writing a review! However, their take on this dish surprised me. Firstly, there was a solid quota of king prawn. Then, for me Pad Thai can normally be too dry but this had a moistness and sauce to it, which made it more interesting. Jacki had the lamb rendang (Malaysian). Now, this piece of meat was slow cooked on the bone, so it literally melted away as she pierced it with her fork. Rendang carries some weight having been voted the no 1 dish on an online poll of 35,000 by CNN back in 2011. Having had a taste of the tender pink lamb meat, I could understand why Jacki was prepared to go back in time to log her vote. Sides were unnecessary as the portions are huge! Not knowing that, we had some coconut rice and garlic spinach. The great thing about ordering too much, is that you get to take it home. This made for a great lunch at the office the next day thank you very much. A fantastic food journey across Asia from the comfort of this smart little friendly joint. The menu is halal, vegetarian and vegan friendly, so it pleases just about everyone. The staff are sweet with a very funny Irish waitress who had us in stitches with an anecdote about apple sauce and tomato ketchup. Bravo.

Yelp
Have been here once only, and I say its been great! Especially LOVED their Chicken lemongrass with rice! Seriously a MUST try!!!!! Service - was good. We were well looked after. Small place, simple, cheap and delicious :) Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! Best Korean I've ever had, and amazing value for money. Beautiful garden in the back, and friendly service to boot. Easily the most bang for the buck in Kentish Town. You should eat here, tonight, but please leave some bulgogi for me! Update: I've had to dock Bintang a star due to their rather excessive new corking fees- £3 for a bottle of wine and £1 per can of beer. I am sorry, Bintang, but I cannot recommend you as enthusiastically if you are going to hold your customers hostage to their habits like this, tsk, tsk.

Yelp
I got a bunch of items for takeaway so a pleasant staff member suggested I take a seat and wait. She was very cordial and the fact there are outlets all along the walls that allowed me to charge my phone as I waited made me especially happy. I got the tofu and aubergine laksa and whilst I was shocked at the price the portion is substantial and the flavour is just delicious: full of lime and a hint of spice. Really lovely. However the tofu gao bao was pretty flavourless so I ended up chucking one. But the stir-fry aubergine, lime and coriander was just as lovely, bursting with lime and garlic notes. Delicious. I would defo return if in the area.

Yelp
I was at the launderette a few doors down and was hungry but didn't have much time before I needed to pick up my clothes.. Was heading towards Camden market for something quick when this caught my eye. I got two gao baos for takeaway and waited patiently in the empty restaurant (it was 3:30pm so rightfully so). The service was prompt and it took a little while so you know they were making it fresh. I got a beef and a duck. Both were delicious and very flavorful. The bun was soft and the meat stuffed the pockets full. I felt it was a bit overpriced, however, at almost £4 per bao. They were very yummy but I'm not sure I would pay for them again.

Yelp
We had a fresh surprise going into the restaurant which was full upstairs but intimate downstairs, where you can "bring you own" wine. We had a very tasty and spicy tofu & aubergine Bintang special as well as a cauliflower buka suka.

Yelp
Bintang has still got it! A year later I've returned on several occasions. The service was friendly and quick. Dishes worth mentioning---- Wasabi Prawn Tempura is still excellent. A must have on the table. Bintang Curry-- This is really an amazing coconut based curry. I ordered it several times and wasn't let down. Lots of yummy veggies in the dish. Gua Bao--I had the tofu one and thought it was divine. It is worth getting two and sharing with somebody else at your table and then ordering a main dish to share as well. They are rather large and filling.

Yelp
Great food and good prices, friendly staff. Photos of the prawns and special fries below ..

Yelp
Overall not tag impressed with the place - heard great reviews but food was average. The place has a byob policy with e corkage so does keep the price down and a cool little beer/bear garden but my main wasn't too great. I had salmon tacos to start and they were delicious, my husband had prawn tempura but was spoiled with a mayo. Mains was beef which was super chewy although flavours were good and husband had pad Thai but noodles were over cooked and soggy. I also tried some lamb rednang which was really tasty. The food did come out really quick but they also tried to rush us out once we had eaten. It was an experience (small place) and we had a good night but I won't be in a rush to return
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff, chill atmosphere and generous portions of fresh and tasty food! The tofu and aubergine were delicious. Only 4 stars because the dumplings seemed filled with a pre made mix.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here. Walking up the street from Camden Town station, I didn't know if I was heading in the right direction or not. I didn't know what to expect. I had the sea bass and the spicy egg fried rice. The whole fish was cooked perfectly and the spicy rice was super spicy. It is also a BYOB establishment so that makes it a great place for a casual dinner out.
google avatar

Tazmin B.

Yelp
Had the pad thai. It tasted like curry. The atmosphere is really dark and moody and not in a romantic way. Looks more like a pub than an actual restaurant. It really tiny at the top but I think theres more space downstairs. Will not be returning.

Yelp
The sauteed bok choy with garlic was my favorite! It helps that you can bring your own wine in for a teeny tiny corkage fee :)

Yelp
I thought I was lost trying to get this place, but just when I thought to check the map on my phone, there it was! It seemed to be small, with just one host/waiter working on the Sunday night, but it has a lower floor that wasn't open. It made for a nice atmosphere having just a small area available. It was quite cozy. The food was tasty, but RICH. I guess the main problem was that it was so tasty, I couldn't stop eating (my bad decision). I had the tofu and aubergine bintang with coconut rice. The rice was topped with coconut cream...you see what I mean about rich. Overall, delicious! I also noticed that many of our fellow patrons were partaking in the BYO. The charge for wine is £3 per bottle. As with most establishments I've visited, the toilet is not accessible, down a flight of stairs. Recommended, but bring your self control!

Kyra M.

Yelp
This place was so good. Everything was fresh, unique, and delicious!!! Restaurant staff were were friendly and we couldn't get enough of our food. Definitely a must-go place here.

Yelp
Great with friends BYO wine (but expect to pay a small charge per bottle). The food is a little hot and garlicky and takes a while to cook, so don't expect to be in and out very quickly.

Darko K.

Yelp
Sad to say that Bintang has become a very poor restaurant. We lived locally until two years ago and always had reasonable food here, now standards have dropped to the bottom. Using frozen fish and jars of branded sauces does nothing for us, almost ok if you are a very poor student. They also own Guanabana a few doors away and that place is not much good either. It's a shame as they were better a few years ago.
google avatar

Qype User (lace11…)

Yelp
Very tasty Thai fusion cafe/restaurant. Cosy and intimate, it has a nice decor although the service can be slow. I eat here regularly as it is good value for money (especially the set menu) and the food is always to a high standard. There is a nice outdoor dining area out the back and I had a birthday party in the basement. Highly recommended

Yelp
You really shouldn't walk past this Kentish Town gem. It might look unremarkable from the outside but this little place is guaranteed to host memorable evenings and serve delightful (msg free) mostly Malaysian food. Great if you like your spices...a bit dodgy for vegetarians though. There is no license but you can bring a bottle and the prices will make you smile. I loved the sweet cosy atmosphere upstairs which is full and loud while downstairs is more tranquil and romantic. If you struggle for conversation just discuss the golden/red decorations and the little paintings and the dainty lamps! I found the staff very genuine.

Nick R.

Yelp
Bintang was once my favourite place for cheap eats in London. Cozy, unpretentious, generous helpings of flavoursome grub. THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED: different menu, higher prices, and reduced portion size. Maybe the've taken their eye off the ball now they've opened Guanabana next door. I've been back a couple of times, trying to like them, but have been consistently disappointed. The garlic spinach used to be glorious, but last week tasted burnt and drenched in soy sauce. Other portions were meagre. And to cap it all, at the end we were told the 10% service on the bill was 'for the restaurant', and the staff didn't receive any of it (ie. we needed to pay more service on top)! We refused to pay it, and tipped the waiter instead.
google avatar

Sandra H.

Yelp
I love this place, the food never disappoints me, the service is very friendly, you can bring your own drinks. I am happy to know they have re-opened after a period of refurbishment. Me and hubby used to go there every week and it's very likely we'll re-start that habit now it's open again.

Elaine T.

Yelp
Gave this place a second chance but sad to say the food here is still very poor. I cannot believe the many positive reviews here and simply ask people to look at reviews elsewhere too, Tripadviser is one example.
