The Best Italian Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Nestled in Monkland Village, this fuss-free neighbourhood bistro is a favourite for homey Italian eating. You can’t go wrong with the fried calamari, spaghetti puttanesca (filled with briny olives, capers, and anchovies), or the osso buco (a braised veal shank), served here with rigatoni." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Google
very small restaurant with no reservations. cute bistro feel, Italian, and authentic. nice but not overbearing service - although we did feel some pressure to have to leave as we were a large group of 7 (was was 1/3 of their table space). the food was all fantastic. incredible. that's where the five stars comes from and it is well deserved.

Google
this Italian bistro is a must try. The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Everything we tried was delicious, but the standout for me was the octopus salad — perfectly cooked, tender, and so well-seasoned. We kept coming back each time we always find a new favorite dish. Before this octopus salad was the special fish soup

Has a cute dinner vibe. Had their special of the day which was a torched tuna with a salad, and it was very mediocre. Calamari was good. Was a nice spot but not sure I would go back. Pasta was good but felt like something I very easily could have made at home. Although we sat at the bar it feels like staff walked by us frequently without paying attention when had a question.

Solid Italian in NDG, probably the best in the neighborhood. We went for lunch. We shared the polpete as appetizers, which tasted great. We then had the eggplant pasta and the duck pasta. They were served with a very tasty green salad. Both were good, and portions were super generous, we could barely finish, but we weren't wowed. Service was quick, and the place is very charming and cosy. Overall, we enjoyed our experience, we'll come back for dinner to try other dishes and see how that compares.

I went to this restaurant with my 4 friends today Tuesday August 5th. We sat on the terrace. We all ordered a different dish and everyone loved their food so much. The pasta sauces were very tasty. My friend’s lamb was amazing. A lovely spring salad accompanied our meals. They were generous with the portions. Even though it was a Tuesday evening supper hour, there was a bit of a line up. They do not take reservations. There is parking on the street. In my opinion this is one of the best Italian restaurants on Monkland Avenue in the heart of NDG. We will most definitely come back again.

I used to work as a chef in Sydney, so for me people saying Montréal is a gourmet city felt like a huge myth UNTIL I came across to this place. All the ingredients are just simply fresh and each ingredients hold their natural flavour and it is just amazing, just AMAZING. And only 4$ for the Arancini with that fresh juicy tomato sauce? please please try it. The service is great as well , love the atmosphere , portions are generous. And I’ll say it again, SIMPLY AMAZING, Hell AMAZING.

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I stumbled upon Bistro Ameriko recently, and I have to say, it’s a gem in Montreal’s dining scene. One of the things that immediately caught my eye was that they offer vongole, which is surprisingly hard to find around here. Naturally, I had to give it a try, and I was not disappointed! The vongole was everything I hoped for – perfectly cooked pasta with a delicate, briny broth that really let the clams shine. It had just the right balance of garlic and white wine, and every bite transported me to the Italian coast. It’s not easy to find a place in Montreal that does vongole right, but Bistro Ameriko nails it. For lunch, they also serve a simple green salad when you order one of their mains. While the salad isn’t fancy, it’s a nice touch – crisp greens with a light vinaigrette that complements the meal without overpowering it. It’s a thoughtful inclusion that rounds out the plate. I also tried their fungus pasta, and wow – it was packed with earthy, umami-rich flavors. The mushrooms were cooked to perfection, and the sauce clung to the pasta beautifully, delivering a satisfying, hearty bite every time. It’s a dish I’ll definitely be coming back for. Overall, the atmosphere at Bistro Ameriko is warm and inviting, making it a great spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner. The service is friendly, and it’s clear that they put a lot of care into their food. I’m already planning my next visit – there’s so much more on the menu I want to explore. If you’re in Montreal and looking for a place that offers both classic favorites and hard-to-find gems like vongole, Bistro Ameriko is absolutely worth a visit.

Google
Loved the food! Came here as a group of 4 on a Tuesday evening. We ordered a lot of food and we're very pleased! The service was very family style and laid back, the restaurant is small and cozy. The prices are reasonable but mainly the food was very tasty! All the pasta was good, the appetizers as well. We had the calamari, mozzarella di bufalla, shrimp ravioli, duck ragout pasta, Italian sausage pasta and braised beef. All delicious! Thank you

Yelp
Outstanding grilled octopus.. I've ordered grilled octopus anywhere it's on the menu... the preparation and execution was unlike anything I've had. Set the bar... incredible.

Yelp
Delicious!! Great service. Location and parking awesome. Ambiance can be romantic or fun for friends! A real crowd pleaser!

Yelp
Wow what an incredible little gem! After living in Italy for a few years, it's been near impossible trying to find authentic Italian food outside Italy. Amerigo hit it out of the park! The staff members were so welcoming and helpful. Service was superb! We tried the gnocchi and the rigatoni and both were incredible. Fresh ingredients and super delicious. This place fills up quick! Ambiance is lovely but it's a pretty small restaurant so try to reserve in advance. 10/10!!!

Yelp
WARNING! This place does not take reservations! WARNING #2! The wait for this restaurant is worth it! Starve if you need to before you come here! Stretch your hunger!! It was my first time in Montreal and I came here with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary :). When we first came we were frustrated that there was a 30-45 minute wait but we said whatever and wrote our contacts down on a waiting list. 30-45 minutes later after doing a quick market run and wandering the neighborhood we were estatic to hear that there's a table available for us. Our waiter/host greeted us with good vibes. Chill, funny, and reminds you of any other uncle who tries to shove food down your face. The restaurant serves salad or soup that's on the house accompanied by bread- which are great starters! We had the veggie soup since Montreal can be so cold. Here is what we ordered: Mozerella di Buffalo as an appetizer- very refreshing, tomato's were sweet but the pesto and FRESH mozzarella complimented it well. Gnocchi Funghi e Tartufata as entree #1- MUST GET! MUST BE ORDERED AND DEVOURED. The gnocchi was so delicate and melted onto your mouth and the truffle cream was very rich. From my boyfriends words, "I am usually an unemotional person, but this pasta almost made me cry in a good way" ITS JUST THAT GOOD! So good it'll blow your socks off! Baccala Fior Del Mar as entree #2- The risotto was cooked and seasoned perfectly and the cod was perfectly cooked to balance out the seasonings. Though it's not good as the Gnocchi Funghi, it also was a very big portion but delivered on all the taste notes :,) Tiramisu for dessert- There's really nothing to say besides it was the best tiramisu I've ever had in my life before. So soft, so rich, creamy, melts in your mouth again, where you thought you were too full for dessert but it makes you want to eat more!!! I absolutely loved it. Both my boyfriend and I really enjoyed our date here at Bistro Amerigo, it's one of the best places we've ever dine out to and the vibes are immaculate. I'll never remember how we found this place, but we're really glad we did! Grazie Amerigo!!!

Yelp
You're done!).

Yelp
I can't say enough positive about our experience at Bistro Amerigo. Authentic food, welcoming staff & atmosphere, and excellent service. It's small, so the day of the week and time could impact your visit. Make reservations if possible but if not it's worth the wait.

Manon S.

Yelp
Service was excellent, the price was fine but the menu was limited and so so would return to try À different dish

Yelp
Loved loved lived it! Food was great and wine even better. Service was impeccable. Found the restaurant a little tight but comfortable.

Yelp
This Italian restaurant is so amazing, with great staff and great tasting food. This is my go-to place for Italian whenever I'm craving a delicious pasta, meatballs or tiramisu. I've had a few of their pasta dishes and they've all been amazing. My favourite one though is the Cavatelli Barese. The flavour and textures are just so incredible that this is a must try for anyone. You can even request no meat if you're vegetarian! As for the meatballs, they're a delicious entre to begin with. I also recommend the mozzarella di bufala with bruschetta. They're both really delicious and the portion size is amazing! As for the tiramisu, it is a must! Every time I come here I get the tiramisu, it's THAT delicious. The consistency of each layer is amazing. Overall, this restaurant seems to be a hidden gem since I only discovered it recently. I highly recommend whenever you're in the mood for Italian!

Yelp
Amerigo hits it out of the ballpark every time. Consistently exceptionally delicious, authentic, top-quality homemade dishes and a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere; you will feel right at home. Seafood, pasta, and mozzarella so fresh you will think you are in Italy. If they have cioppino on special, get it. And leave room for cannoli and tiramisù.

Yelp
My new favourite Italian place in Montreal! I came here for the first time on Valentine's Day because we thought we'd have a better chance of getting a table since they don't take reservations. When we arrived around 8:30, we ended up waiting about 20 minutes for a table. The atmosphere is super cute, romantic and cozy! I feel like the pictures on yelp don't do it justice! It's a small space with room for about 30 people at tables and at a small bar. The service was above average. Every person who worked there was so friendly and pleasant. They were attentive but not pushy, which I really liked. We ordered the Mozzarella do Buffalo entrée and each got a pasta; the Gnocchi Arrabbiata and the Cavatelli Barese. The meals come with fresh bread and olive oil as well as a simple salad. Mozzarella di Buffalo $19: Delicious soft mozzarella with tomatoes and a pesto sauce with balsamic served with crostini. So fresh and delicious. 5/5 Gnocchi arrabiatta $14: very good, wish the sauce had a bit more spice though 3.5/5 Cavatelli Barese $18: unreal fresh pasta with sausage, brocolette, sundried tomato pesto and white wine. Amazing flavours!! 5/5 We got a tiramisu and a salted caramel cookie for dessert even though we were so full and had to take half our pasta to go! Both desserts were excellent. Best cookie I've had in years! Prices are super reasonable for the quality and portions. Can't wait to come back here!

Yelp
Excellent on all points. Great local Italian restaurant with a home style feel and lots of character. Food is excellent and service is exceptional. Try it.

Yelp
You thought the Italian food was good in Brooklyn? Please. Just come to Montreal. Specifically this place. That's it. Do it. Just this spot.

Yelp
Bistro Amerigo, you are like a warm hug on a cold day. It's like being in nonna's kitchen, where food is made with love. The restaurant is small, and the portions are plentiful. Be prepared to wait at night for a table. They do not take reservations. I docked one star for this, because when you get to be a certain age, waiting for a table loses its appeal. I understand why they do this, as they have a steady stream of customers and do not need to take reservations, but know that many people abhor waiting for a table, so this might deter some of your potential patrons. Aside from this hiccup, the food is wonderful, the service is personable and the ambiance is friendly and warm. A great experience overall.

Yelp
Great appetizers and pasta, fragrant coffee, and delectable cookies! (I'm sure the other stuff is wonderful too but I haven't had the chance to try... yet!). Honestly, I LOVE this place! The food is casual but fabulous quality, the staff is so friendly and attentive, and the price... well, I think it's an amazing deal. My favourites (so far): - Octopus Salad: WOW. Will come back for more. 100%!!! - Veal Meatballs: Huge, moist, and flavourful. (Though I wish the "crostinis" were smaller/thinner.) - Gnocchi in Rosée Sauce: Great homemade gnocchi with perfect density and mouthfeel. Sush a simpledish. Clarification: Such a simple pleasure! - Pasta Putanesca: So packed with flavour yet very balanced. Spaghetti is also homemade and super fresh. Can't wait to try more of Bistro Amerigo's offerings!!! Makes me want to move to the neighbourhood... Thx to chefs and staff! MERCIIIIII!!!!!!! (Btw: the cookies are a must try. Have tried both their chocolate chip and salted caramel cookies. Yum!!!)

Yelp
The first time I came here, I wasn't blown away by the food. I tried the osso bucco, the octopus and the calamari appetizer. Although I really liked the calamari, the other two dishes were alright. The second time was completely different; the truffle porcini gnocchi melted in your mouth and the spinach riccota medallions were delicious. I highly recommend that you order something from the specials if you go. The canollis for dessert are also a must. My biggest critique is that this place does not take reservations. Both times there were line ups out the door and we waited about 30 minutes to get seated. A few other small groups left while waiting because it was taking too long. In the summer, they have patio seating so the wait isn't as bad, but it's a bit problematic in the winter.

Michelle T.

Yelp
We were visiting Montreal and looking for somewhere to eat near family. We decided on bistro Amerigo. It's a very small location inside of an Italian deli, but the food was fabulous!!!!!
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
Hidden gem in monkland village! Incredible food! My favourite is the grilled octopus! I personally cannot wait for the terrace to open but in the meantime, love having an at home dinner from Amerigo!

Yelp
A++ place to go out to eat the staff are extremely friendly and the food is to die for I highly recommend this place if your looking for a good small place to eat

Yelp
One the the most underrated Italian restaurants I've been to. Home like cooking. Great. Beautiful street.
google avatar

Sheila O.

Yelp
Thus is a great small corner restaurant. When it's relatively the quiet the great food is served with love from the kitchen and the staff . Great for families. However when it's busy with waiting out the door the food and service is compromised. I wish we had gone elsewhere.
google avatar

Preethi P.

Yelp
This place is pure magic. The best pasta I've had. So authentic and the customer service was excellent. I'm a very indecisive person but they patiently answered me. Also the meatballs are A MUST TRY! ! My friend wouldnt stop talking about the food all day
google avatar

Yelp
Last minute find on a warm Sunday eve visit to friends in Montreal. And what a score. Everything we ordered for dinner was good to super fantastic the Polpa (octopus was incredible only near equaled by a resto in Mexico where the guy dived in with a spear and served it minutes later. This is a fun and homey space. No reservations no name list so make contact with a waiter and they'll remember. 6 tables inside, 4 outside, tiny bar maybe 5 or 6 seats. Once you're seated they really take care of you. 4 thumbs up!
google avatar

Martine V.

Yelp
Amazing comforting quality Italian food. Wonderful little bistro with a homey feeling and very warm service. My new favourite place.
google avatar

Dan Z.

Yelp
Been here a few times. It's the best Italian food for a great price. The place is just too small but worth the wait. I really should say it's horrible so no one else goes but I can't. All the meals are amazing. Seriously!
google avatar

Yuyao L.

Yelp
Small place yet very comfortable. Staff is very friendly, food quantity is HUGE. Great for casual dates and family. They are also a store selling all kinds of Italian food products.

Michael S.

Yelp
Arrived at Amerigo restaurant @ 1800 yesterday Sunday Sept 28th the restaurant was full 1 table available young gentlemen at the bar seated us gave us menus, 2 minutes later the waiter came over to tell us we had to leave the table, my girlfriend has been here before this restaurant does not take reservations but did proceed to say the table was taken and provided no solutions to us It does not matter how good the food is it is a customer based industry and there no customer service in this situation Too bad
google avatar

Nic Q.

Yelp
Great new find, very relaxed family-friendly spot. Everything we had was very good, the soup, the very large size fritto misto, and two pasta dishes. We were full as can be, no room for dessert which looks like they have good options. I liked our waiter's sense of humor.
google avatar

T F.

Yelp
Had a nice quiet dinner here, amazing friendly service and tasty spaghetti. The portions are perfect and I'm not sure if the pasta was made fresh or cooked from dry; either way, it was enjoyable. House wine is quite decent too. Super affordable prices especially for the quality you get. Ambiance is standard/good but I can't say it is romantic - I will definitely go back for lunch with a friend!
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed a dinner with friends one cold, winter evening. Service was service warm and helpful. I choose octopus whenever possible and this one was outstanding and very reasonably priced. There were tables available when we arrived but it was quite full by the time we left. This is definitely a popular spot and I can see why.

Yelp
I finally tried this little gem on Monkland for myself to curb an ever present pasta craving and it really hit the spot! Really nice cozy atmosphere (indoor and outdoor seating) with that great NDG neighbourhood feel (the seating is a little tight inside but still comfortable), warm and friendly customer service oriented staff and delicious food , you can't really go wrong. We tried the Bellini (refreshing but not too sweet) and the old fashioned (this one was good too but strong!), only thing is the drinks were a little small. Naturally we opted for pasta dishes -We tried the tagliatelle with veal ragu (bolognese) and the cavatelli barese (sundried tomato, Italian sausage and rapini). Both were delicious and had that home cooked feel with restaurant quality complexe flavours , great texture and cook on both pastas. The dishes are served with bread/olive oil and salad to start. The salad was simple mixed greens and light dressing , the greens were crisp and the dressing was light&flavourful. The bread was fresh&the olive oil was tasty. I'm already thinking about all their other dishes that I want to go back and try so it's safe to say I will definitely revisit this place again and again !
google avatar

Naïka E.

Yelp
Cute little italien resto/supermarket in NDG. Its hard to find a great pasta place in montreal, so I was happy to get introduce to this one and the pasta dishes were legit! I loved the vintagy italien deco and the fact that you can shop desert and fresh meat while taking a little pasta break! I recommend the calamary starter dish, it was super flavourful.
google avatar

Roy S.

Yelp
Best italian/pasta experience you're ever going to have away from Italy. Totally recommend.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
Incredibly impressed with how local this felt. Food was delicious and shockingly cheap ($15 for squid ink pasta vongole? Come on). Very friendly service though it took quite a bit of time to get our food on a pretty busy night. Making this my new go to neighbourhood Italian.

Ghyslain L.

Yelp
I've had a love affair with this " restaurant de cartier incontournable "! Come and see for yourself!

Melissa S.

Yelp
This place is so so so so so delicious. Our absolute FAVOURITE sneaky find. Looks like a take out place when you walk in, but it serves the best Italian fine dining food.

J B.

Yelp
Pleasant place, but with mediocre food (except very good calamari, lightly cooked in a light, crispy batter). My cod was nicely cooked but not fresh enough. The lobster ravioli had little lobster flavour. Service was frustratingly slow. This on a night with only about two thirds of tables filled.
google avatar

Yelp
Having lived near the Monkland Village for over two decades, I usually head to Little Italy whenever the cravings strike for an authentic Italian meal. No more. Amerigo changed all that, thanks to a classic menu of truly great pasta dishes including some of the best spaghetti amatriciana I've ever tasted. They also have a variety of focaccia options including a sublime truffle and egg dish that is addictive.. We started with the arrancini and meatball appetizers which were both bursting with fresh ingredients and surprisingly light. I tried the prosciutto and arugula focaccia which was perfect and my wife ordered the porchetta, and so I managed to get in a few forkfulls of an incredibly moist and succulent slow roasted pork dish that brought me back the porchetta I had sampled in Umbria. They also have a ridiculously affordable wine selection, and where else are you going to get a Negroni for 6 bucks. What can I say. I love this place.

Roz W.

Yelp
Had to try this neighbourhood restaurant based on the great reviews and the inviting look of the place as I drove by...and I wasn't disappointed! Service, food and ambiance were great! Nice outdoor terrace, cozy interior with authentic Italian products (for purchase) surround you on all the shelves. I had dore and my friend had the lamb shank and both were delicious, served with a simple green salad. Cappuccino was great! Our waiter's personality and warmth added to the enjoyment! Will definitely return!
