Bistro Le Cep

Food was get. Had the escargot (nice and buttery), salad, red fish special, and cheesecake. The dessert was especially good, very creamy, and the red fish was moist and delicate. Surprised there weren't any more people in there, I'd thought it be a local hit.

Granted, it had been 10 yrs since I had been at Bistro Le CEP. I remembered it fondly and decided to try it again. Interior is exactly the same but seemed extremely outdated and lacking polish. Sat at bar for dinner. Great service, attentive, easy, well informed and helpful. Tomato, onion and blue cheese salad was good though onions were way too thick. Thinly sliced would have been easier to eat and less overpowering. Coq au Vin was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. The “broth” it came in seemed generic and probably used across various menu items. Lacking in wine flavor but it did taste well. The chicken seemed to be boiled chicken covered with the soupy sauce rather than braised in wine. Chocolate Mousse was excellent. A spike of Grand Marnier would have elevated it a few notches still. The starter amuse bouche pate was excellent. Wine selections by the glass were extremely limited in French options. Surprisingly for a French Country bistro. $75. Dinner for 1 with 2 glasses of wine.

A wonderful experience of French cuisine. The moment you walk in you are hit with the rustic French decor and music. The food it self was incredible, the parings for the Wild Boar and Bistro Trio were perfect. The sauce was sweet yet somewhat rich to balance the stronger flavor of the boar. Their dessert menu was great with us trying the Crème Brûlée, it was just sweet enough but not overly so to overpower the creamy rich texture.

What a wonderful place. You would never know it's there but the food, atmosphere and service were on point. It was an excellent meal and we will go back again.

Great service— welcomed at least three times upon walking in, and servers were gracious and professional. However, there was quite a long wait for food, as some reviews have mentioned. Once seated, we were treated to complimentary pate, and servers came by twice with warm bread. The Escargot was well-flavored, and the appetizers were well-plated. The plating of the entrees left much to be desired for the price point paid (each dish looked like it had been thoughtlessly but uniformly dumped on a plate), but flavors were mostly good (the rabbit tasted like chicken). The Tarte Tatin was great, and the Mousse Au Chocolate was incredibly airy (to the point where we felt almost cheated out of the $9). Pretty rustic and quaint atmosphere. Overall, good food and would return, but as a more upscale restaurant, there are still improvements that can be made.

A hidden french gem that is a miss if you dont look. It does feel and smell very old school french (and yes, I have been to France). The escargot was buttery and tender. The duck was crisp. And the wine was very generous. Support this local joint, even if you are unfamiliar with the cuisine. Especially for restaurant week.

I am in town for a short business trip and I tend to have a strong appetite for French cuisine. So, I booked an 8:30 PM reservation. The last to be served so the service was attentive. I had searched online for a highly reputable French restaurant in Houston, Texas. Bistro Le Cep left me unsatisfied. The food was very uninspiring. Perhaps, I am arriving with high expectations for French country-side cuisine. I am unsure if the there was a change in head chef or the owner retired but something about the food felt off. The bread served with butter was cold and hard. The Escargot appetizer tasted bland. The dessert was also a let down in creativity. Apart from the food review, the restaurant seemed to be very clean and the staff very friendly. I left with disappointment and no memorable experience of the food.

I am writing my 2nd ever French restaurant review in all my years as a Yelper. Good French Cuisine is very rare down here. I hadn't been to this place in years and after seeing pics online combined with the praises it had. I decided I had to try the Duck L'Orange Plate and the Chocolate Mousse which I had years ago. Both were very delicious, so well-prepped and very good in every way. The duck was very tasty with a somewhat gamy vibe to it, but in a poultry fashion. Very flavorful, mildly crispy skin packed with great taste and the gamier part in the soft, gray flesh. Every bite was so good and consistent. The orange glaze which must've been the reason for the touch of fruitiness it had was really good for contrasting the natural wild duck aroma. The leg quarter sect of the duck was especially my favorite on it. The little side of wine sauce was good and kind of acidic. I used some of it and didn't need much bc the entree was perfection. The red cabbage was kind of tart n sweet with a nice, refreshing texture. I subbed the lentils for mashed potatoes, which were really well-seasoned, buttery, soft and creamy without any dry, bland or overly runny bites. The dessert was really good, fluffy, not too sweet but instead more chocolaty as it should be. I love dark chocolate very much. It tasted like years ago. It had a little coffee/espresso taste which luckily blended very well without covering the awesome cocoa taste I craved. I also heavily considered the cherry dessert with ice cream this time, but just decided to try that on my next visit. I love sweetened cherry stuff too. Great, attentive, friendly service as well. This is the 2nd excellent French dish I have had in Houston out of a total of 6 I have ever tried in this city.

Cute place! A French country decor. About 1/2 full on a week night. We sat in a roomy booth. Service (Efraine) was outstanding! We ordered wine by the glass and thought not too many French options. They brought toast with a scoop of pate and it hit the spot. We split the escargot as an appetizer. They brought out soft bread and kept it coming so we were able to indulge in the buttery wells. I got the trout special. My friend got the duck l'orange. I loved the trout and was happy with my choice. I finished all my mashed potatoes! Yummy. I got the cherries for dessert and they were really good! Hit the spot.

So good!! Scrumptious and Devine. I literally couldn't stop eating. Someone help me!! I need help take the silverware away!!

Quaint little spot off westheimer. cute inside and we did the restaurant week menu for dinner. nice selection and generous portions. we enjoyed the trio and a duck meal and escargot!

We went to this resturant expecting a French experience. The decor was simple but did not portray a French ambience. The menu was exciting but unfortunately did not live up as promised. The offered special of haddock prepared in butter, olive oil and capers was disappointing and more towards room temperature. The much advertised escargot lacked sufficient garlic and again was not presented sizzling in its butter. The other advertised dish; French onion soup was also disappointing as it lacked a full topping of cheese crust. However, our experience was salvaged by the good quality of the wait staff who were polite and attentive to our needs although we arrived about an hour earlier than their advertised close time and, we stayed well beyond that.

This restaurant has been around for as long as I can remember and I've been in Houston since 1995 and in 2024 comes my first visit. The special soup during my visit was the Manhattan clam chowder. It's almost like a tomato base with clams. Interesting take, but I prefer the creamier white sauce version. The crab cakes were decent. Nothing to go crazy over. It had a nice crisp but would fall apart when you cut into it. The veggie portions were abismal. Also during my visit they offered a three course dinner for around $50. The aforementioned clam chowder was my first course. The trio of lamb chop, bacon wrapped quail and duck were my second course. The duck was exquisite. Lamb chop wasn't bad. The mashed potatoes tasted like it was made yesterday. Also this spot is kind of pricey, but I get it, it's French food so it's not super common around these parts. My third course was dessert which was the red velvet cake. Tasted like it's been in the fridge for 3 days. Overall this place is alright but I'm not rushing to get back.

My friend and I came here for his bday dinner. The service was great, the restaurant was cute, and the food/drinks good. I think the service was the best part about Bistro Le Cep. We had exceptional recommendations on the wines, the waiter came to check on us often, and he was super nice. The pate was tasty, the lamb chops were cooked well but pieces weren't that big, and we got complimentary champagne and dessert for the bday boy which was really sweet. Can't wait to come back to this longtime Houston staple!

If you get a bad wound here and don't treat it, it's Bistro Le Ceptic. And if you come here after Aug 31 but before Oct 1, it's Bistro Le Ceptember. So this is a pretty delightful French Bistro, and one which we've been to one a couple of occasions, partly since it's right by the gym, partly because it's a diamond in the rough, a nice place in the wilderness, a good date spot, and kinda romantic. So my favourite thing is the french onion soup, and a lot of the other menu items are a little bit overpriced for us, but they can still be pretty good, and I honestly have to say my favourite thing about the place is the decor, especially the adorable cows that are out front. So there's not a lot of good French food in Texas at all, so it's nice to have this place around. A very solid four stars, and in a weird way, reminds me of the Bouchons of Lyon.

Food was excellent, the service was great, and the wine was reasonable. My wife, 11 year old daughter and I all enjoyed our meal.

It's been so long since the last time I visited this wonderful place. Trust me, I missed you a lot, Bistro Le Cep, and hope that you understand that in the past couple of years, I've got 2 babies and by listening to Dr. Fauci and Judge Lina Hidalgo, I have been going out much less to stay safe and keep my family safe from COVID *facepalm* Okay whatever, it was great being here again and how awesome both the quality of food and service were just perfect!! I love the calves liver as always, and the butternut squash was so sweet and yummy! The hubby and friends all have enjoyed their foods including filet mignon, lamb chops, French onion soup, escargots, and the rabbits...Ewwww I'm sorry, to me and my 5-year-old pet lover, rabbits are pets and not food LOL! I bet Bistro Le Cep's rabbits must be super duper good though, we ordered 5 roasted rabbits but the kitchen ran out and only had 2 rabbit entrees available for us. I wish Bistro Le Cep had kids meal options on the menus and it would be great if the kitchen could fry up some French fries for the kiddos. I don't know about the French kids, but American kids love fries, not escargots! LOL. Anyways, everything here is great!

Comfortable bistro on the West Side of Houston. Two distinct dining rooms. Staff is gracious, attentive and knowledgeable. The menu is varied and interesting. I have been going to Bistro Le Cep for more than twenty years for lunch and dinner. The Chilean Sea Bass is excellent.

Overall very good family owned restaurant. The vibe is very homey and all the waiters were very attentive. Food was very delicious and very authentically French! This place is a family favorite!

My son and I came here for lunch for Houston restaurant weeks. We tried a different place each week. I am a restaurant manager for Pappas, we did this at our Mediterranean concept when it was open and it's a great way to get people in to try a cuisine that they are not super familiar with. I docked a star from my review because of server seemed annoyed that we were ordering HRW. Food was great, our drinks were refilled the length of our visit and bread was brought out to our table. My son ordered the escargot, chicken piccata and chocolate mousse, he loved it all. I tasted his piccata and the sauce was so yummy! I ordered the potato and leek soup, wild boar and creme brûlée. I loved all of mine as well, every thing had great flavor. It's funny I used to live right down the street from this place and always drove by this restaurant and wondered about it. My son chose this place from HRW menu and I drove across town for it. Definitely worth the trip and we would go again!

We have been avid customers of Bistro Le Cep for at least 20 years, so we are saddened by the recent massive increase in their prices. We all know that restaurant prices have increased out of all relationship to food prices, but Bistro Le Cep's price increases - on the order of 50% - have exceeded other excellent French bistros in the Houston area in higher rent areas, such as Etoile Cuisine in the Galleria and Bistro 555 (successor to Bistro Provence) in Memorial. We hope Bistro Le Cep will return to their earlier business plan of quality French food at a reasonable price, but until they do, we will not be back.

French Onion Soup fantastic! Meats cooked perfectly and all the sauces for them all were on point. Crab cake a little too much celery for my taste but good. Small and intimate space, get reservations for busier nights. Great service and atmosphere.

I probably drove past this place a millions times as I shop at Daido regularly. Today, we decided to stop by for HRW's lunch. Ample parking and it's a cute little French restaurant. All staffs had masks; I entered the restaurant first when my husband was still in the parking lot. The host/gentleman automatically brought me to a table when I told him that it's for a party for 2. It's a small place and my husband found me. Another patron came in after me; the same host asked if he wanted a booth or table. I wonder why he didn't ask me as we generally prefer a booth due to my husband's height. Efrain was our friendly server and we placed our orders: escargots in garlic butter, Texas Hill country wild boar, cream brulee and dark chocolate mousse. We dip our breads into the garlic butter and finished all with the escargots. First time having wild boar and it was gamey at all. The sweet and tart plum sauce went well with the protein. The mousse should be dark chocolate but it tasted more like milk chocolate and I'd prefer a thicker texture. Husband said the cream brulee was too thick in texture but creamy. Overall a good experience and will be back for trying other items.

Beautiful setting. Delicious food. I had the Texas Hill Country wild boar with plum sauce. So tender and had a slight campfire flavor underneath. Top note was flavorful plum sauce and I couldn't get enough of it! Had iced tea with my meal and the black cherries with vanilla ice cream for dessert. My wife had the Chilean sea bass and she said it was delicious as well. This is a pretty fancy place and reservations are recommended. Also every table is served a hard bread with pate.

My boyfriend (then) took me there for my birthday. Les escargots, soupe à l'oignon, le canard & le lapin were all super delicious. The waiter was super attentive, and I think the chef actually came out to greet us as well. Lovely atmosphere and great memories.

We went for calves liver which is an excellent choice in a very excellent French restaurant. We were not disappointed. The service is very attentive and the ambiance is quite Ala Francaise. I had cherries with Kirsch for dessert and the rest of our party each had a different classic French dessert. I have been going to this bistro for several years and the food has always been excellent and I would recommend it to everyone.

I adore this place and always feel so special when I'm there. It's quiet with a country French ambience. Food is delicious, of course. Every time. I almost don't want to tell anyone about it, so it stays perfect and unspoiled.

Decided to check this out since it was on the Houston Restaurant Weeks list. It's a small and very intimate place with great service.

What a charming little place,with amazingly reasonable prices. I think being just outside the Belt,Westheimer at Wilcrest hurts their cachet. Pity , the veal chop was excellent...

The food is always very good with some dishes being excellent: onion soup, duck a l'orange, and fish en papilliote. Service is excellent. Ambiance is cozy and warm and you can hear yourself talk. Good wine list too.

My go to bistro. The escargot, duck and creme brûlée are my favorites, always delicious. Good wine selection, warm atmosphere. Service is always attentive but not overbearing, perfect course pacing.

I visited this restaurant on 8/20/2021 for dinner and for HRW '21. I ordered the House Salad with master dressing, 8 OZ CÔTELETTES D'AGNEAU GRILLÉES lamb chops grilled to perfection served with seasonal vegetables and green peppercorn sauce, and CRÈME BRÛLÉE DU BISTRO LE CEP. The food was absolutely delicious and well worth the cost. It wasn't crowded when I arrived, but as other guest arrived it felt tight, cramped and a little claustrophobic for me, especially during these pandemic times of COVID. The staff was very attentive to my needs and on time with everything, no long waits for service. I would visit again in person post COVID, but for now take-out is sufficient for me.

Came for Houston Restaurant Weeks, so I'm not certain if this is a typical experience. For our first course my husband ordered the wild boar with (white button) mushroom and plum sauce. The sauce tasted overwhelmingly like bottled teriyaki and the lighting was so PINK (see the pictures) that we wouldn't have been able to identify what kind of meat he was served if it hadn't been stated on the menu. I ordered the escargot which was the only decent thing, along with the wine, we had throughout our meal. For the second course, my husband regrettably ordered the Chilean sea bass which was undercooked and served with unseasoned sides that looked like they came from a school cafeteria line. They couldn't be bothered to peel the carrots before boiling them. My choice of the bistro trio of lamb chop, duck breast, and bacon wrapped quail legs was marginally better. The chop and quail leg were nice, but the duck breast should have been rendered more, because it was rather chewy. Again, the vegetables were awful. Let's talk briefly about plating. 1987 called and they want their parsley sprig and rosemary twig back. Finally, dessert. A perfect tarte tatin is a thing of beauty, but this was a nightmare. It was just a congealed mess that resembled a slice of upside down apple pie. The key lime pie with a squirt of reddi-wip on top was a joke. Both plates prominently featured a giant sprig of mint that engulfed the table. Our waiter was polite, attentive, the only reason this restaurant is getting any stars for the review, and should probably find a better place to work. Will not be back again.

We have never been disappointed with either the food or service...always a pleasure to dine here! Our server, Ever, was wonderful! This was a belated Father's Day celebration - we enjoyed the Duck Pate, House Salads, Wild Boar, the Roasted Duck & Fresh Catch of the Day (Red Fish) - then we spilt the Creme Brûlée & Chocolate Mousse. Everything was done to perfection! Ever was very attentive & again - we always can count on Bistro Le Cep to come through in first class style.

One of my favorite restaurants in Houston. The quiet ambiance, the soft red-pinkish lighting, the slow one-by-one food delivery, the delicious food - for me, a good way to relax after a long day. Great customer service - very attentive, courteous, and welcoming. My favorite is still their escargots. I also recommend their sea bass - very tender, flaky, and juicy. If you have room for dessert, definitely try their creme brulee; the custard is very soft, smooth, and rich, and doesn't leave an eggy aftertaste. Will highly return in the future

A good place to go for casual French food. This place has been here for 2 decades so I bet their food must be decent. I had the escargot, mussels and mahi-mahi. Everything was above average. They just need to be more generous in bread. And also the bread should be improved. It's not warm and didn't taste fresh. The wine list is mediocre. My server was as nice and helpful. The decorations is old fashioned but I love it.

Dress code is business casual as said by the host but the people inside were dressed very casually. I came here for a birthday dinner so we felt overdressed. Parking lot is really small but there are some additional parking around. It's located by UPS. The entire interior has a pink-ish/purple-ish lighting. It gave the restaurant a romantic ambiance. They give you complimentary bread and pate. On Sunday, there is a special for $30 per person and you can pick an appetizer, entree and dessert of your choice. I was not hungry so I decided to just order appetizers. Overall, everyone from my party were satisfied with their food, no complaints. Service was good. Frequent refills and attentive. They also give you another round of bread as your food comes. The restaurant close at 9PM but we were still there for the birthday cake. Good thing they did not kick us out. My fine dining experience here was mediocre. This place is good for maybe a date for two as the noise level is pretty quiet. Not so much for a group dinner.

We had the French onion soup and Rueben! My husband and I thought the food was delicious and light. We went during lunch and shared our sandwich. Staff is super friendly. I don't live in the area, but thoroughly enjoyed the food and date with my hubby!

I have ALWAYS wanted to visit this restaurant, it has been around for so long and every time my parents drove past I wanted to visit the " cow " place. Since they have a cow statue outside. Food : we went here for HRW 2019 and I was pleasantly surprised . I came in with low expectations but the food was good ! We ordered the following Bread: you get complimentary bread , I don't eat much but they need to give you more than one loaf when they serve you . Just give a basket ! Starter : escargot and carrot soup . Escargot was buttery and delicious , soft! Entree: wild boar and mushrooms , friend ordered the salmon . Both delicious ! Portion sizes were true to a "lunch " size . It wasn't overly filling but on the smaller side of Houston sized portions. Desert: creek brûlée and chocolate mousse. Both delicious ! Service 4/5: great! Attentive. Refilled your water quickly, and checked up on us at the right time and didn't try to intrude in on your conversation. Ambiance : a bit dated had a lot of doily looking decor, menus were a bit sticky and HRW paper menus had food on them lol . Please clean them ! Overall recommendation 4/5: would come back ! This place has been around for so long , they're doing something right ! I want to try more escargot!!

Stopped by on the spur of the moment. Good menu choices. Service very good and unobtrusive. Short waiting time for food. Wild boar and fish both extremely tasty.

I have to admit that I have only ever been here at lunchtimes - but every time I have really enjoyed it. I am thinking that this little restaurant is about as close it gets to "authentic French" in Houston. It is a direct descendant of a fabulous restaurant (also in the Memorial Area) that I used to frequent when I lived here in the 1980's "Rotisserie for Beef and Bird". It is my understanding from a close gourmet friend that the owner of Beef and Bird scaled back to a smaller venue in preparation for retirement and took his skill and chef with him. As I recently posted (pic's) they always have lunch specials and they are ALWAYS worth considering. Yesterday it was wild boar with mushrooms, wild rice and fresh asparagus, I took the house salad with that and the French breads and butter keep coming! All for $14.95, add a nice glass of red wine with that and it really does not get much better. Of course all the pickings on the menu look good (I wandered from the lunch special occasionally - and can heartily recommend the calf's liver entrée - yum!!! Although I haven't tried for dinner yet, but we plan to and I am 100% confident that it will be great!!

Pretty disappointed in the food here. We started out with the mussels and they were quite possible the worst mussels I've ever had. The flavor was lacking and the mussels tasted really rubbery and not fresh. I got the Cod en Papillote for my entree and again flavor was really lacking. The fish was nicely cooked but I had to ask for extra lemons to get some sort of flavor. Also the crab that came with the dish had lots of shells in it so that was not appetizing. My husband got the wild boar and liked his dish. I don't eat red meat so I did not try it.

Went there for lunch with my family. Lemon buttered salmon was delicious. My husband also loved his chicken dish. Shortly after dining we discovered our car battery was dead. Owner was kind enough to help us jump the car in the afternoon heat and made our experience that much better. Delicious food, AMAZING service. Thank you.

We went for Houston Restaurant Weeks and the food and service were good. When you arrive you get crostinis with chicken liver mousse, nice touch. Escargot was delicious in garlic butter. The French Onion soup had a rich and dark broth and of course the crouton and cheese topping. It was a tad on the salty side but very tasty. They bring you slices of baguette during the appetizers, one at a time . But you can have as many slices as you like, you just have to ask for them. My Duck a l'orange entree was a large 12 oz portion (meaning half a duck) and the sauce really makes the dish. The duck was on the dry side but with the sauce it was delicious. The sides were lentils (a bit undercooked) and braised cabbage (very yummy). My husband got the grilled lamb chops which were cooked to a perfect medium rare and was paired with a green peppercorn sauce. Our dessert were also good, the tart tartin was the best of the three. The apples were cooked perfectly. The creme brulee was smooth and creamy. The chocolate mousse was just ok, very lite and airy maybe even too lite. Overall the food was good, you should expect traditional French cuisine, no fluff. The wine by the glass prices were great, many options for under $10. The decor feels like a Swiss Chalet, in the Alps. My only complaint was how warm it was inside, we were slightly sweating.

First time here at the Bistro, discovered during Houston Restaurant Week. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the experience. Service was attentive. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. We will be making the trip into town to explore more of the menu.

Bistro Le Cep is a French style restaurant with roomy restrooms. As you make your way to relieve yourself, you first pass through a door labeled restrooms. Once you've crossed in you'll find your self in a limbo space with the men's room dead ahead and the women's room to your immediate left. If there is a line you can wait in this area and look at our self in the large mirror on the wall. The men's room features a single urinal and signal stall. The lock on the stall works and he urinal provides more than adequate privacy. To wash up you can choose from one of two sinks. And to dry your hands there is a an automatic towel dispense. Thank god. I really hate hand blowers. For a classy French joint like this I'm so glad the didn't screw their customers over by forcing them to use those disgusting things. It would be very un French of them. The wait staff was very attentive and the food is far superior than the exterior let's on.

My son & I had to go to Houston for Dr appt & had dinner. Was great reminded us of Paris the duck I had melted in my mouth. My son had fish & I think he swallowed it whole. Lol. The crème boule was extremely & I mean extremely good.

Wonderfully quaint and amazing French cuisine with outstanding service. Generous servings, succulent coqauvin--some of the best I have ever had!

I found this place by accident as I had to kill some time being in this area. I was sitting at their bar and besides a good selection of wine their menu delivers the French aspect of dining to Houston's restaurant landscape. Their menu is written in both French and English. I was having the Fresh Mussels (USD 10.95) and the dessert can be seen in the attached picture. It's definitely worth going if you want to broaden your dining experience. Next time I will try the Calves' Liver.

2 Jan 22. First visit to the restaurant. It's quaint and inviting. The service was efficient. I had two glasses in front of, the waitress without asking me pour water into my soda. I had salmon. The presentation of the small portions was outstanding. My food wasn't hot.

We have been coming to this fine restaurant for almost two decades and have yet to fine a better place than this. We enjoy the ambiance, the excellent service, the superb menu offerings, the quality of their offerings, and the excellent value. The manager always greets us with a smile and by name when we go there. We have gone there for birthdays, marriage celebrations and this is the place we take all of our visitors including children and grandchildren. This is the place we give to anyone asking for "where to go". Can't say enough about this place. This place reminds my wife (who is from Denmark) of her mothers' cooking. Go there for an overall great experience!

Have been to Bistro Le Cep a number of times but before the pandemic. My daughter took me for a belated Mother's Day. What a disappointment! I got the escargot and onion soup. Previously loved the escargot. Tonight, the sails tasted like they came from a can, small and rubbery. The onion soup was all broth. I had to search for pieces of onion. 9.50 is too much for broth, a few pieces of onion, a couple of pieces of bread and some cheese. I have had better meals at Luby's. I will not be back.

Went for Houston restaurant week. Service was great and food was as well. Albeit the steak was on the tougher side with more tendon than I would've liked. Great appetizer and dessert (French Onion Soup and Creme Brulee respectively). Would recommend!
