Where to Find New Orleans’s Best Comfort Food | Eater New Orleans

"Dumplings must be comfort food worldwide — there are versions of the dish everywhere, from Poland (pierogi) to Japan (gyoza) to Italy (ravioli). At Blue Giant, the Chinese version is shrimp wontons (their special soup dumplings don’t travel well), tender dough stuffed with ground shrimp and swabbed with spicy chile crunch. Get the egg roll too; best in town. Call to order; follow social for hours." - Beth D’Addono

Genuinely the best Chinese food I've had in a long time. We got a little bit of everything. I was shocked at how incredibly well done the veggie options were. The eggplant & catfish were the stars of the show in my opinion. Delicious and creative drinks. Service was immaculate and everything arrived quickly. I have not a single complaint. Haven't stopped thinking about dinner since last night and I'm already planning on coming back tonight for take 2.

Truly an amazing experience start to finish! Love my Chinese food I’m St. Louis, MO but this place kept my jaw on the floor. Huge portions, phenomenal spicy and flavor, along with expertly made drinks that are strong but do not make you choke on the hard liquor taste. Adding this place to my repeat restaurants when i do my biannual Nola trip with friends and family. Also right next to Fat Boy Pantry which has amazing homemade ice cream with super unique flavors to top off the meal!

AMAZING 🙌 We wanted Chinese and this place was the closest to where we were, so we decided to give it a try. It isn't very big but nice and cozy. We sat at the bar do to limited seating (we did not make reservations). We ordered the pork pot stickers as an appetizer and was BLOWN away. I've never tasted any better and the soy/black vinegar was insanely good, it did a weird thing to our mouths lol Felt like tiny explosions on our tongues or like when you eat pop rocks. So creative. For my main dish I ordered the spicy eggplant which did not disappoint, they were super spicy and delicious! Great drinks. We loved it!

Blue Giant is some of the best Chinese food in New Orleans! My wife and I went here for a Saturday lunch during the pandemic. First, know that indoor seating was requiring a reservation while outdoor seating was first come, first serve. Reservations were via Resy. They have hand sanitizer at the table, and all employees wore a mask. Blue Giant’s customer service was excellent. They happened to be out of diet coke when we went, but one of the staff ran next door to buy a bottle. We ordered family-style, not that you need to, and split everything. The egg roll and potstickers we're our choices for appetizers. The potstickers were the clear winner! Highly recommend. We then had the Broccoli Stir-fry and Dry Chili Chicken. Both were spicy dishes. Let me preface this next bit with we love Chinese food! We knew we would like what we ordered but didn't expect to enjoy it as much as we did! Both dishes had a ton of flavor—more than I imagined. The dry chili chicken, I believe, had Szechuan peppers in it, so you get a nice ”numb” mouthfeel from the spiciness. Overall, it was a great lunch, and excited to have restaurants like this in the city! I would highly recommend them.

Google
AMAZING!! I loved this place. We got a bit of everything from the menu to taste it and there was literally nothing that wasn’t delicious! That crispy beef was my favorite. The service was top notch, and the drink options had something for everyone. Definitely give this place a shot! Get a reservation if you can.

Google
We expected great and were still pleasantly surprised. Some things were spicier than expected, but this is coming from people that love spice and didn't think this level would be appropriate for the masses. Pictured are the marinated cucumbers, the crispy beef and the shrimp wontons. We also had the duck lo mein, but didn't get a pic. It was perfect. Everything we had was a must have! Go here!

Food was incredible. The Dan Dan Noodles are EXTREMELY spicy. The crab Rangoon and shrimp wanton were incredible. Chicken fried rice was some of the best I’ve ever tasted. Overall, a great meal.

I was visiting New Orleans and heard about this Asian restaurant in Nola. I am from NY so I was skeptical but BOY was I wrong. The food was impeccable. I had the Catfish, Pork dish, Brocolli, Shrimp Fried Rice and Shrimp Wontons. The meal was to die for! It comes to your table as it is cooked, I don't always love that bec I want to start eating it all together but I also love my food hot and fresh. I also had the Cookie Monster Ice cream desert. I would suggest this restaurant for a date or a group. And now that I've had the experience I would make this a destination every time I visit Nola.

Yelp
Sometimes I really like going to a noisy restaurant I dont know why, but sometimes I am in the mood for it, and this was the place for it. Blue Giant is full of life, talking, laughter and cooking. When you walk in there are views of the open alley kitchen and the chefs are cooking and it is nice to watch. Seating surrounds the kitchen and you can see your food being prepared. There is also outside seating with a cozy garden vibe. We ordered crispy beef and sweet and sour pork, sautéed broccoli and shrimp dumplings, which were good. The red seasonings on top of the broccoli was too salty for me(I just dont like too much salt) Our waiter was ok, he needed to really be more attentive and friendly. He was so bland and blah. My daughter ordered a frozen drink and she never received it, but he added it to the bill. We had to let him know that he did not bring the drink to our table, instead of apologizing, he said "Oh Ok, I will take it off. I always tip at least 50% of the cost of my meal, because I like being generous to people who give good service, so he missed out on a nice tip. It is a decent place to try. Try to get the female waitresses, because I noticed at their tables they were attentive, friendly and courteous.

Yelp
Very cute Chinese restaurant located on magazine street. Recently went here with my yelp bff and I enjoyed it. This place has a very nice ambiance, keep in mind that it is small so I would recommend making reservations if you want to dine in. We started off with a tequila drink called under the red hot moon, simply delicious. If you like spicy drinks you need to try this. We decided on the egg roll and shrimp wonton for appetizers. The egg roll wasn't my favorite but I did enjoy the sauce that was on top the shrimp wonton. It was the perfect amount of spice for me. We got the Dan Dan Noodles and the chili chicken for our entrees. The noodles were just ok but I really enjoyed the chili chicken. The portion size was huge, you will definitely have leftovers to take home. The service was very good. I can't remember our waitress's name but she was very helpful, practically picked our food selections for us since we had so many questions.

Yelp
I'm sort of torn on Blue Giant. I ordered food for takeout a few times during COVID and have been once to eat in. This is PRICY chinese food which I wouldn't have a problem with but the dishes are really hit or miss. The fried dishes I've had are all good - the dry crispy chicken, the crispy beef, the shrimp wontons. The spicy stir fried eggplant was flavored all right but they were giant hunks of eggplant, they could have been cut smaller to make them easier to eat. The mapo tofu was some of the worst I've ever had. The cumin lamb noodles had a weird flavor. If you go, stick with the fried dishes.

Yelp
New name, same location, same awesome food. Will be frequenting this establishment for all of my fried rice needs. Welcome back!

Yelp
Recommend? Yes. I got the chili cucumber, the fried rice (veganized), the dan dan noodles (veganized), the stir fry bok choy (veganized), and the coconut ice cream. The chili cucumber is a classic that just can't go wrong or get messed up. It was refreshing and great for cleansing the palate for a new bite. Of course this is what I say about all the chili cucumbers because despite them being made different it's the sameness that sticks out to me. Both the fried rice and the dan dan noodles were delicious with unique flavors, better yet flavors I'm not familiar with. The rice and noodle textures were both cooked well to my taste. It can be hard to accomplish sometimes. And the coconut ice cream was the perfect finishing touch.

Yelp
The best sit down Chinese food restaurants in the city. I've been quite a few times at this point. First was close to when they opened and most recently stopped by a couple weeks ago. My opinion has not changed. It's as good when they were first getting in the groove, same with take out during the pandemic, and now back to in person dining. My goal is to try something new each time, but I haven't been super successful. So far I've only managed to try different appetizers and desserts. So that brings me to what I get every time, which is Dan Dan noodles and dry chili chicken. The Dan Dan noodles are rich in flavor and have a nice crunch with the nuts on top. It's got a good spice level not overpowering, which is good considering there's plenty on the menu with some heat. Now on the chili chicken. The chicken itself has a crisp outside and juicy inside. This comes packed with some heat, but not unbearably so. It's mouth tingly not sweat inducing. If that's not your thing just tell them they will alter it. That is my thing and it's a little bit of a euphoric high after munching on these. Appetizers I've tried are the egg roll and dumpling. The egg roll was crunch and dense with stuffing. I think I prefer this option when not sharing. The dumplings were light and fluffy inside with the corners having a crisp. The dessert I've tried is the coconut ice cream. I was skeptical because I love my dairy ice cream, but we were going all in. Man is that ice cream good. I especially recommend it if your mouth is feeling a little too spicy after the meal. It cooled me down and I walked out feeling right as rain. Almost forgot to mention, don't just toss those fortune cookies. They aren't half bad tasting (As someone who really doesn't like them in general) and they have some of the best fortunes in the game.

Yelp
My visit was long overdue but wowza, I left with the biggest smile on my face and simply floored on not only the food but the service we received. Our server was an angel and she really was the star of the show. From her witty and friendly banter to her superb service and suggestions. She alone deserves like a million stars. (Once I find out her name I'll make sure to edit my review!) She really does embody the spirit of New Orleans and the dining experience one dreams of whether you're a local or a tourist. I also have to mention her swag was just so badass, like the cool kid who is just so cool and gets along with everyone and makes friends with anyone. My partner and I were so blown away by her that we didn't hesitate to leave a generous tip and personally thank her for making our date night so memorable. Anyways... Dining in the midst of a pandemic can be quite tricky but if you're concerned about the practices here. DON'T BE. Blue Giant has knocked it out of the park with all of their COVID-19 safety practices. Honestly this was one of the safest dining experiences I have ever had. They have a total of five tables open so reservations are an absolute must. Installation of plexiglass, check-in station at the front, masks required, hand sanitizer, constant sanitizing, I felt like a true VIP. When one is on a date night, you know you have to start off with some cocktails if that's your poison. Their signature cocktails are worth trying and one of them even benefits the Son of a Saint non-profit! Now for our first bites of the evening, I don't play around nor do I try to look cute in front of my partner anymore. I'm ordering the whole damn menu and I'm going to create a spread that should be for four people not just two. My boyfriend and I started with an egg drop soup, dan dan noodles, shrimp wontons, and another item that my boyfriend wanted. Holy crap those dan dan noodles. Have you ever had a bit of food that is so good you contemplate saying it taste horrible so you don't have to share. Well I sure as hell did, because I would've gladly ate this dish all alone or even reheated in the middle of the night while he was asleep. Every bite had the right balance of crunch and texture, my taste buds were really having a trip of their lifetime. The spicy chili crunch on the shrimp wontons is fire (but not super spicy at all)! You have to order this dish and share amongst the table, it's a great dish and as you start exploring the menu you really do realize that this will be a signature dining experience within the city. We hadn't even ordered our "main dishes" and I was already crying tears of joy with my third glass of wine. (Oh yea, they also serve beer and wine!) I was intrigued about the crispy beef being a dine-in only dish, so I wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity. I'm one who stalks a menu for like the whole day and scouring through countless amount of photos so I know ahead of time and make "casual suggestions" whenever I'm dining out. *I'm putting my [food] stalking skills for the greater good I keep telling myself. So when the dish comes out, I made sure to let my boyfriend have the first few bites. Balance, y'all balance. So when his eyes lit up, I was like hot damn this is gonna be a treat. So I use my chopsticks and pick up a bite and put it into my mouth. Chefs Kiss. I was ready to go behind the kitchen and just hug the kitchen. I can't give proper justice to this dish; however, I can see that the reason it's not available for to-go/takeout is because I understand it wouldn't give proper justice to this dish. It has to absolutely be served straight from the kitchen. Now the surprise winner of the night for me was the char siu pork. So f*ck#ng tender and literally would break apart from the touch of the chopstick. It was so good that I ate a second dish of it alone. My mouth is actually drooling while I'm typing this out haha. Blue Giant is just such a romantic and hella cute spot. I'm so happy to see them around and thankful I was able to dine-in and support them.

Yelp
This spot has that cool, hipster vibe - cranking out well executed traditional Chinese / Sichuan fare. It's a small spot so call ahead if you've not made a reservation. The host was awesome and let us know what was available. Service is amazing from start to finish. The waitress came by right away to get our drink orders and held back when we needed more time. A good date spot to share a couple of dishes. The Beef Chow fun dish is what you'd expect - not greasy but a nice sheen of dark soy sauciness goodness. The dry chicken chili has a different spin - a fried cornstarch batter that I'd not seen before in this dish. It reminds me of Chicken Karaage with lots of chilis and cilantro. You'll end the meal with fortune cookie!

Yelp
A really delicious take on Chinese-American cuisine. I've been twice now, have tried something new each time, and I've done my food happy dance both times, lol. The food is super fresh and is packed with lots of flavor. If you're used to super heavy, saucy, Chinese food, definitely temper your expectations. The food here will satisfy your craving for the cuisine, but it's a lot lighter than your typical Chinese spot. I know a crowd favorite is the fried rice, but the chili oil cucumbers are soooo good. They brought me back to my time in China having a similar dish. Loved it. The staff are very friendly here and I really appreciate their commitment to checking vaccination cards since the restaurant isn't super large. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you decide to try.

Yelp
Blue Giant did not satisfy my Chinese craving. We tried the shrimp wontons, which was the best thing about the meal, the Dan Dan noodles, the dry chili chicken, also good, and an egg roll. The shrimp wontons weren't fried, which is what I am use to, and I would consider them more of a dumpling. They were a nice appetizer and full of flavor. The Dan Dan noodle tasted like spaghetti and meat sauce with cheese, was not a fan. The dry chili chicken was good, nothing special about it, mainly fried chicken with chili peppers. Lastly the egg roll was most disappointing. I LOVE egg rolls so when I saw the size, I just knew these were the egg rolls stuffed with cabbage, meat, and shrimp. Well that was not the case. I honestly couldn't tell what it was stuffed it. It was like a mish mash of something rolled together then wrapped with the egg roll wrap. I took one bite and did not want another. My Yelp BFF knew something must have been wrong for me not to finish it. The restaurant is nice and cozy inside with about 6 or 7 booths and a number of seats at the bar. I must be missing something or ordered the wrong thing because people were constantly coming in and out for food. Lastly the staff was very friendly, you have a designated server, but everyone will take care of you.

Yelp
Finally got to go back in person to eat lunch at Blue Giant. After making reservations the day before (we were going for Friday lunch and didn't want to wait), we were promptly seated in our booth. Both sides of the booth have plexiglass going up to separate you from the other diners on either side of you and each table has a nice spray hand sanitizer to use. I started off with a rose mint tea daiquiri which was nice and refreshing. For food we each got an eggroll (these were massive and we easily could have split one), an order of the pork dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, and dry chili chicken. The server asked if we were okay with heat which was nice but we knew exactly what we were getting into. The eggroll was delicious and oversized. The filling was delicious and the trio of sauces was pretty much used up on these. The pork dumplings had great flavor and had a good amount of filling. Then the stars of the show were the Dan Dan noodles and the dry chili chicken. The chicken is my favorite and I have dreams about this chicken! I eat it with some of the white rice provided so I can eat more without being overwhelmed by the spiciness of the dish. The Dan Dan noodles so had a good amount of heat and were delicious as usual. Maybe one day I'll branch out and try another main dish, but if not I definitely know what I love over there!

Yelp
Blue giant, I'm soy into you. Located on the beautiful Magazine Street, Blue Giant is a great spot for a date night, friend gathering, or solo "treat yourself" dinner. It's definitely not traditional Chinese food, but if you're looking for bomb American Chinese food, this has to be one of the best. We got an order of the Dan Dan Noodles, Mapo Tofu, and Kung Pao Rice Cakes. The spice level was *chefs kiss* - just enough to get your blood pumping, but not so spicy that you forget your mom's name. All three dishes we got were spicy, as expected, so if you like spicy we highly recommend any of these dishes. The mapo tofu was yummy, spicy, and perfectly saucy - the perfect dish to go with rice. The Dan Dan noodles were so fragrant and umami and the Kung pao rice cakes were slightly sweet, very spicy, and had that wonderful wok hai, or essence of wok as my parents always say. This was a super satisfying experience and we would highly recommend! Wok on, Blue Giant!

Yelp
This is the absolute BEST Chinese food in the entire greater New Orleans area. Period. With the (temporary) pandemic cessation, Blue Giant halted its carry out service. I called to see about a reservation and was pleasantly greeted by Rema, who quickly assessed their seating situation and let me know that both bar seating and outside patio seating were options with no wait. Score! When I arrived, she was just as delightful in person and got me seated immediately. Nestled on a busy corner along Magazine Street, this restaurant boasts ample seating - inside at tables and at the bar, as well as outside along the perimeter. The feel inside is hipster and the music is a mix of pop and rock. The decor is fun, paying homage to Muses with a variety of decorated shoes on display. Overall, this spot is cool for those dining alone, couples, and small groups alike. I went for their long awaited scallop dish - the Scallop egg foo yung ($18). Blue Giant does a modern take on this classic dish. They sauté white and green onions together and then add in the FRESH scallops and magnificent seasonings. Next, they roll all of the items into a freshly made egg wrap. The whole meal looks like an egg burrito! There's no plum sauce or even accompanying white rice. Why? Because this mammoth dish doesn't need anything more. It comes cut into 4 sections and is large enough to feed two people (get the free white rice in this instance). The scallops were silky, melt-in-your-mouth-buttery goodness. So well prepared and not at all chewy. Though I could stand for the onions to sauté another minute or two, the flavor was delectable. There was a bit of brown sauce drizzled over - maybe an oyster sauce - delicious none the less. The dish was both satisfying and filling. A definite must try! Though I was planning to get my check and head out, Jordan tempted me with their dessert offerings. He went all in when discussing their locally made Coconut ice cream ($8). He described it as BOTH vegan AND creamy, which is unusual... For the price, I gave the dessert side eyes. However, Jordan insisted that I would absolutely love it, if I loved both ice cream and coconut. #Absolutely. I went for it and was pleasantly surprised to eat such a creamy, toasted coconut filled dessert. This ice cream - made by Sundae Best in the Bywater - is probably the best coconut ice cream I've ever eater - milk based versions, included. It's chock full of tender pieces of flavorful coconut in every single scoop. Plus, with a heaping full three scoops, it's worth the splurge. Go for the flavorful Scallop egg foo yung and stay for the decadent vegan Coconut ice cream! Plus, the service and attention to detail is truly outstanding, especially in this weight-class of restaurants.

Yelp
#thankyouthursday Blue Giant has become one of my favorite spots for Chinese, their flavors are out of this world. I also really enjoy their cocktails, definitely need a Pain Killa right now. The Salt and Pepper Catfish is my number one dish I must get everytime, I have dreams about this. I can't get enough, the catfish seems to be fried in a tempura batter so it's super light and airy with a slight crunch. Seriously a party in my mouth, they are not using just any ordinary salt and pepper either, I don't know what it is exactly but it's everything I didn't know I needed. I'm looking forward to the day that I can actually go into the restaurant and dine in, I will have a few cocktails and order a ton of dishes just so I could be mesmerized all over again. I have so much love for them! #yelplove

Yelp
Kept hearing positive things from my friends who go so I decided to give it a 2nd chance. Definite mistake as I was sorely disappointed once again. This time I ordered the beef chow fun. Not only was the dish far too salty/too oily and the onions undercooked, but the portion size was meager. The takeout box was around 2/3 full. My friend commented that the vegetarian Dan Dan noodles were too oily. We also agreed that the bang for your buck is just not there. I definitely was not full after eating this $14 dish. I had high hopes, but unfortunately Blue Giant was disappointing in terms of flavor. And certainly, for me, not worth the price nor a wait.

Yelp
OVER THE TOP! This place is slinging spicy Chinese food like no place in Nola. Had the shrimp won tons, dry chili chicken and Dan Dan noodles. Wontons were the steamed variety with medium sized shrimp and chili sauce with a crunch and mild spice. Then they turned up the heat with the dry chili chicken which had jalapeños and chopped red peppers (possibly cayenne) mixed in and was awesome. Went great with the jasmine rice. Dan Dan noodles were great too and also spicy. If you like a little burn this is the spot. Look and feel of the place has a NYC vibe.

Yelp
Finally made my way over to try Blue Giant. It was a great experience. The vibe was right and the food hit the spot. My glass of water was refreshed often and several servers checked on us throughout the dining experience. I'm glad my coworker was up for trying this place out with me tonight. I'll definitely return.

Yelp
By far the best Chinese food I've ever had. If you go you have to get the Dan Dan noodles and the sweet chili chicken! The drinks were delicious also. Can't wait to go back and try the crab Rangoon's and something new! also the spice is on point. Some people may say it's too spicy but if you're a person who loves spicy food like me this is the spot.

Yelp
This was THE BEST Dan Dan noodle I have had in my life !! I'm a huge fan of Chinese/Szechuan cuisine, and this really hit the spot. The food we ordered was a bit spicier than I am used to, but h*ll, it's New Orleans !! The wait staff was pretty nice and the food came quick. Would definitely come back here !

Yelp
Blue Giant was really good and I really enjoyed my food experience here! The location is checking vaccination cards (something that I think all restaurants should do) when you visit so remember to bring yours if you decide to come to eat here. I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles and they were able to substitute the pork with mushroom for me which I really appreciated. The noodles were absolutely great and they had a tangy garlicky flavor to them. I thought the flavor and the spices that were added to the noodles were perfect. I felt also very full and satisfied after my meal here and I really hope to return to have crawfish during crawfish season.

Yelp
When thinking of NOLA you don't exactly think of Chinese food...but let me tell you, you MUST try Blue Giant. The blue giant showcases a spectacular meal paired with a spectacular kitchen dynamic & ambiance. If you try anything at all please get the Dry Chili Chicken. It was AMAZING. cocktails were great I had the under the red hot moon ( has a kick) & my partner had the Flying Tiger Beer, both great picks. Portions are sharing sizes & great for family style eating. Please give this place a try.

Yelp
Last minute date night heaven: Not only is the food great, but so was the atmosphere and service. When asked our preference of indoor versus outdoor seating, we chose the latter. To our surprise, the amiable host led us out the front door, the one we had just walked through, and down the sidewalk to the back of the restaurant where we were greeted by a cottage-styler (slightly disheveled) garden area with a tables lit by string lights. Charming enough. The server quickly met us and maybe the sweetest person in the planet. She was knowledgeable, competent and engaging. She directed us in our drink choices which ended up being futile since every drink we tried were stellar. In particular, the Ryes and Grind, their take on the old fashioned, was perfectly sweetened, and a great balance of ease and potency, and the refreshing East of West, drank like a French 75 with more body and flavor. Appetizers came next, and don't pull any punches. The crab rangoons and pork potstickers were very rich and flavorful. In most cases, I prefer a lighter apps. Even though the rangoons exploded with flavor, the potstickers won out, with its sumptuous and silky wrapper, and fiery pork filling. My significant other ordered an egg roll which I opted not to taste. We were almost finished with the appetizers when our much anticipated main courses arrived. We had the chilled sesame noodles and duck lo mein. My boo-thing was jealous of the love affair I had with my lo mein. This affair was tempered with our confusion by portioning. The chilled noodles were very tasty and refreshing, however they came in a much smaller portion compared to the platter the lo mein was delivered in. I'll admit the mountain of rich and flavorful duck and noodles was a challenge to finish. No complaints of portion were had by my significant other. The sesame chilled noddles were the only thing that went to-go. All-in-all, our time at Blue Giant was a stellar experience. If you have the chance, go here. Don't think about about it, just go! I don't give 4 stars to many restaurants. What would get this amazing restaurant all 5 would be lighter appetizers, more reasonable portion sizes, and (so trivial) a more tidy garden. To reiterate, please go here.

Yelp
I typically don't care too much for Chinese food because I grew up eating a crap ton of it, and I don't recall New Orleans being a hot spot for Chinese food . . . But my friends insisted that Blue Giant was all kinds of delicious so I was apprehensively excited about trying Blue Giant. We sat outside in the patio, which was a bit mosquito-y this particular time of year. There was a singular tiny fan going, but it didn't do much for the heat and the mosquito situation. Just a little FYI for those of you sensitive to that sort of thing! I order the Pain Killa cocktail and let me tell you, it was wonderfully fruity and delightful, but watch out, it is in fact rather strong! The vegan options I tried were the Chili Oil Cucumbers, Stir Fried Broccoli, and Kung Pao Rice Cakes, and I gotta say, they were all notably tasty AF. The Chili Oil Cucumbers were the perfect pairing of cool and fresh, while bringing an intense chili heat - honestly almost "too spicy," but I managed to power through because it was such nice party in my mouth. Our server mentioned often eating the Stir Fried Broccoli as a meal itself, so I was definitely intrigued as to how broccoli could possibly be that delicious and satisfying. But sure enough, the broccoli was wonderfully seasoned and plentiful - despite looking kind of plain so I'm not exactly sure how it was prepared. By the time the Kung Pao Rice Cakes, we were fairly stuffed, but holy moly was it a delightful Sichuan-inspired treat. It was extremely saucy, and thus perfect with a nice mound of steamed rice. My friends also ordered the Salt and Pepper Catfish, which is one of their favorite dishes and I can only assume that was nicely executed as well. The only thing I would perhaps suggest is that maybe Blue Giant one day consider adding a tofu dish onto the menu . . . I mean it would kind of make my day as I'm sure they would develop a delightful tofu dish! Needless to say, we ended up with leftover, that we were able to stretch into a couple of meals. Which hey, I'm all about the leftovers! I have a feeling I'll be back to Blue Giant, with my husband, the next time we both visit New Orleans as he's always keen to try competent Chinese spots.

Yelp
Really good date night spot or a place to have a fun dinner with friends. The decor/vibe reminds me of NYC. It's very sexy, cool, and the lighting is great. It's not traditional "Chinese" so don't expect lo mein or sesame chicken. It's a fun twist on American Chinese and whatever it is... it's delicious. Definitely start out with an egg roll.... And use all 3 sauces they give you. Dan Dan noodles are A+ Along with the chilli rubbed chicken

Yelp
Should you go? Yes. Is it the best? Debatable. Is it delicious? 100% Blue Giant, a fusion of the similar yet different Chinese cuisine and New Orleanian cuisine. Both areas utilize the proteins surrounded by them, especially the catfish, which is Blue Giant's Mascot. When you go here, make sure you're ready for a punch in spice and flavors. That's another similarity, spice levels are potent just like the flavors. I ALWAYS get their fried chicken, wontons, dumplings, & the Dan Dan the man Noodles. Bok Choy is my vegetable of choice, always a nice refresher. @PhidingTheFam

Yelp
Blue giant really is a must. Make a reservation and eat slow. So much to enjoy. Nothing has ever disappointed. The soups are fantastic. Rich and perfectly seasoned. Not your typical American Chinese food. Some dishes are pretty Spivey. If the slickness is too much for you., ask for your entree to be cooked mild. The egg rolls are crispy and beautifully fried. They come with three sauces- hot mustard, chili oil, and house made sweet and sour (and it isn't pink )

Yelp
Yeeesssss! I finally made it to Blue Giant! So it was my birthday and I was on the hunt for a casual spot where I could kick back with my family and have a good meal. I generally keep my birthdays on the DL, so a small dinner with my family is my annual birthday jam. Thanks to Tomas' glowing review, I had a feeling that Blue Giant would be perfect. This place is the sh$&. The staff warmly welcomed us into this hip joint. We had a reservation, and it was a good thing because they are busy. Now for the food. We def over ordered and it was a good thing. This was what we chowed on.: Chili oil cucumbers - fresh and amazing Potstickers - good but not my favorite part of the meal Dan Dan noodles - oh yeah Crispy beef - do not skip this one! Mandarin chicken - delicious Pork belly over sticky rice - mind blowing My favorite dish was the crispy beef, hands down. I can't even describe it, you just have to trust me and order it. Second favorite was the Dan Dan noodles. They were spicy and so rich. I'm looking forward to a girls' night here when COVID gives us back our lives.

Yelp
Quick, friendly service and a good spot if you're craving some food that's not so good for you lol. To be honest, I didn't love my meal, BUT I think that I didn't order the right things on the menu for my specific taste. I love Dan Dan noodles, but these were just overwhelmingly spicy and made my mouth numb to the point where I couldn't really enjoy the food- barely made a dent in this dish. The pork potstickers were okay - I wish I would've ordered the shrimp wontons instead. I did like the crispy beef dish and the textures were nice in that dish, but I will say it's on the greasier side and will sit kinda heavy in your stomach afterwards. Overall, I don't know if I'd come back here but if I did I would try different things on the menu. I really wish the menu had descriptions of each dish and notated if a dish is particularly spicy, or it'd be great if you could customize the level of spiciness you wanted for those kinds of dishes. Apparently the Dan Dan noodles are one of the spiciest things on the menu, but there was no way for us to know that since it wasn't labeled on the menu and our waitress didn't tell us (totally not her fault though). The food wasn't my favorite, but I do think the service is good and they did their best to add a certain flair to Chinese food.

Yelp
Went back to Blue Giant after my first great experience but my second time back was not as good. The size of the entrees which were family style when I first went was down to single servings which messed up our orders since we intended to share food. The entrees came in bowls instead of platters. The end of the night there were no more donuts and no fortune cookies which I was looking forward to. Blue Giant is great but for the money I expected the same experience as before. $40 for Chinese food and leaving hungry is not a great experience.

Yelp
Stylistically this is a next-level joint. Culinarily it is excellent with lots of attention to detail and homage to Chinese American goodness. When you create a menu, an aesthetic, and an environment that all flow really well, the quality of the patrons is the next area of focus.

Yelp
The best Chinese food I found in New Orleans. Granted it's very Chinese American. Charming little unassuming spot. Hipster vibes. Solid menu with not too many dish but all were strong. Loved the egg drop soup. May go back and order to go. Clean tasting and delicious. The egg roll is unique. Much more meat than a traditional egg roll. I think most will want that but if you are expecting veggie filled take out egg rolls, this ain't that. Duck lo mein was a lot of food! But tasty. The duck was cooked to perfection! Noodles were (like many New Orleans places) a bit salty. Overall very good and a nice change from typica Nola food.

Yelp
Wow! Great food, great staff, and a whopping great time. Our favorite seems to be the crispy chili chicken, but everything here has been phenomenal. As a connoisseur of spicy food, this place definitely hits the spot. The head chef-owner is very knowledgeable about his product and is keenly aware that there are eyes on him. But I can tell you that the chefs have spent hours laboriously studying the cuisine that they are presenting. Schezuan/Hong Kong style canto food is relatively hard to find in this city. There are a couple places I can name but none of them offers something that pushes the boundary of ordinary. To be fair, there is a lot of great Chinese food in New Orleans greater metro area, but none that I have been to that has been so daring and innovative as Blue Giant and their team. On the surface one might assume that it is perhaps "not authentic," but what defines authenticity? Good food, cooked with proper technique and proper understanding of the ingredients for me really defines what authenticity means. Even food rooted heavily in tradition can somehow lose their authenticity if the person who doesn't understand their ingredients are doing it purely methodically. I've been to this restaurant twice now, and I haven't had anything that disappointed me. The flavors are so explosive it leaves my palette wanting more. Don't go crazy and order it extra spicy, because they'll bring the heat if you're willing to sit there and power through the pain. But I'm Thai. Nothing is more spicier than momma's cooking.

Yelp
So, we managed to get into this place after hearing a ton of hype about it. Lots of feelings about Blue Giant, so here we go! Here's the TL:DR - amazing food, absolute crap vibe and service. Get takeout! There, with that out of the way, we can roll on. We called ahead to ask about seating for around 6pm. They told us bar seating was first-come, first-serve. Cool! We will hustle for it! Well, when my wife went in and hustled for it, she was scolded by the host, who wasn't cool with this and scolded her, saying "this isn't Thunderdome." Ok, huge burly Viking guy, but you kind of said we could get open seats when it was open and we were there first. So thus began our crap dining experience in this place. Now, before we go any farther - I've read a lot of the other reviews. Most seem to indicate the vibe and service is great. So...bad night? Maybe! But WOW, it was was not good, ya'll. Surly servers for us at the bar. Manager who only paid attention to his friends a few seats over. Very little attention, server missed one of our ordered entrees and then accused us of "only ordering two things" when we asked about it...just not awesome. So - make up your own mind, but this review is gonna break out like this: Service and ambience: 2/5 Food: 5/5 So let's hit the food, as that's maybe more important here. We got a bunch of items: 1. Drinks - just two, but the Red Hot Moon is great if you dig mezcal drinks. Both good. 2. Appetizers - we ordered a few! Here's the breakdown: --Egg roll - for $4 I would skip. Good, but nothing earth shattering. --Hot & Sour Soup - tasty and pretty damn spicy! I dug it, but it's different, for sure. --Spicy cucumbers - amazing. Get them, trust me. 3. Dan Dan Noodles - these are really good. They're actually pretty true to what these noodles should be - lots of ground pork, tons of good flavor and spice, and just the right texture. 4. Char Siu Pork - super tasty and flavorful. Not a ton of food (could be a bit more for $18) but the taste is right on, and perfectly cooked. 5. Dry Chili Chicken - a nice portion of spicy chicken with dried peppers, and they do it well. Would absolutely order this one again. Overall...I'll do takeout from here on out, but you can make up your own mind. This kind of felt like we stumbled in on "Surly Hipster Night" or something, so who knows.

Yelp
This place has been on my "go-to" list for a while, and I am pleased to have tried it out. My main concern was that the dishes were overly salty and spicy (server let us know in advance :)) Me and my friend sat at the bar so we witnessed the person delivering the food touch multiple food plates while touching other things such as his phone, paper, etc. The dishes are also spicy, so be prepared and aware.(no joke) Our server was amazing, she was running tables but was very attentive and made sure that everything we ordered was out and checked on us frequently that we didn't have to flag her down! My red flag was that I ordered a beer, and it was brought to my table already open. I wouldn't mind if they opened it in front of me or poured it in a glass, but it was brought out already opened....... I definitely recommend the Dan Dan noodle (less spicy), shrimp wontons and dry chili chicken!!

Yelp
Eat everything! Have Painkillers! Don't forget to eat your veggies (get the broccoli). You're welcome!!

Yelp
Everything on the menu is super salty and it is all very one note. These restaurant needs more fresh ingredients to change up and have variety. The shrimp wontons are carefully crafted by a salt miner by adding a giant salt rock right in the middle! The Dan Dan noodles are mediocre and one note. The Mapo Tofu will have any Sichuan gramma crying of what the white man has done to such a classic dish. If you want to wake up at 2am with a super dry mouth and extreme dehydration needing water super bad, blue giant is the salty place for you!

Yelp
When you're in NOLA you don't usually think, "hey let's get Chinese!" But You should! This is some of the best food and service that I have had in a long time. Don't be afraid to try something different. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
So dissatisfied from my experience last night! I normally go to blue giant a few times a week because I don't eat meat and they are very mindful to offer vegetarian & vegan options and to prepare them separate. I ordered my usual mushroom Dan Dan noodles. The food runner said "vegetarian noodles" when she dropped it. Once I ate it I realized it tasted different and flagged the waiter down. His answer was oh I'll have it remade and walked off. Never acknowledging that I don't eat pork and trusted him to put my order in correctly. I have been uncomfortable since yesterday and unable to eat because of my bodies reaction to eating pork after nearly 10 years. He didn't even apologize or acknowledge his mistake or check back on me. Very disappointed in his service.

Yelp
This menu has A LOT of potential but there is definitely room for improvement. We started with the blue crab rangoon ($14) which I was really excited about because it's something I always order if it's on the menu and this is a fancy version. Perfectly crisp but flavor left something to be desired and the sauce that accompanied it didn't make up for it (some sort of clear vinegar-ish sauce, not the traditional sweet chili sauce that usually comes with this item elsewhere). The shrimp chili dumplings were dry and not spicy at all (they're very highly rated on here otherwise so maybe the chef was having an off night). The beef and tofu dish was like a chinese version of chili but was also bland. The peking duck was cooked perfectly but also lacked flavor - even if it was just salt. They also messed with the hoisin sauce... it was thick and not nearly a sweet as it's supposed to be. The pancakes were nice and thin and they gave lots of chopped cucumber and scallion on the side. We enjoyed the chili cucumbers (very generous portion wish they were served with some crispy noodles or rice on the side) and I will definitely be running back for the DanDAn noodles... they were outstanding - some of the best I've ever had! -1 star for customer service: i ordered a fountain soda and let our waitress know that it was flat and the carbonator needed to be changed. she never brought me a new one. when i ordered another coke towards the end of the meal it was still flat. for a restaurant operating at 50% capacity (and since this restaurant is very small, only servicing 3-4 tables at this time) i would expect better service.

Yelp
Update: It pains me to do this, but tonight I ordered from Blue Giant because of this very review. I was so hungry. I got home to find my beef chow fun so soaked in sauce that it was inedible. Not a bean sprout nor an onion to be found: just black meat and dark brown noodles sitting in a container full of dark sauce. I understand that they are under stress and trying to pump out orders but there is simply no excuse for what I was given. None. The other two items in the order were fine. Check your items before you leave. If I had seen it while I was there I could have asked for another one, because I cannot eat this liquid salt block. COVID Takeout Review: Oh, Blue Giant! You pack so much flavor into the smallest bites! My stomach is growling as I write this review. I dined inside just once when it first opened and have also ordered food during the shutdown. Hands down, my favorite thing on the menu is the Beef Chow Fun and I've had it more than once. I don't know how it's possible but the noodles themselves are more full of beef flavor than the actual beef? I don't know how they do it-- it's just a really, really superb dish. I also highly recommend the Shrimp Wontons. They are a bit pricey for such a small order, yes, but so very worth ordering and eating at least once. I also can't stress enough the amount of flavor and zing they pack into their order of Stir Fried Broccoli. Wow. This is a great restaurant with passion in their small menu so let's support it. And don't forget to add an order of Chili Oil Cucumbers. #thankyouthursday #yelplove

Yelp
I really do not know what to feel for this place... I had such a high expectation for this place as everybody around me raved about how good their food was. I got to try their food for the first time during this quarantine season and I was quite disappointed. We tried shrimp wonton, dry chili chicken and mafo tofu. Best one out of three options was Shrimp wonton. Super meaty inside and they got some nice kick to them. I recommend not dipping these into soy sauce as they are already salty. Dry chili was alright but it was almost like slightly less battered chicken nuggets tossed with dry chili and seasoning. It was edible and alright but nothing that blows my mind. As for mafo tofu, whatever I tried was not mafo tofu... those who have had authentic one would already know this but the heart of mafo tofu is Doubanjiang - soy bean paste base. I really did not even taste bean paste flavor in their mafo tofu. On top of that, It came in a plastic soup container and it was so greasy. There was a inch thick grease at the top which we drained before digging in. But overall mafo tofu was really sad. Super disappointed. I really wanted to like this place... I really do... but I just cannot seem to find myself getting food from there again... if they offered cheap chinese food, I might find it justifiable but food at Blue Giant is not cheap. By the way, every thing in there is so salty somehow. It's extremely/overpowering salty! It's 7:45pm now and I finished the food at around 5 pm yet my mouth is still so salty... even after drinking bunch of water... Honestly, if you crave Chinese food, just go to Five Happiness or Dian Xin. It hurts to write a negative review but I am just being honest!

Yelp
Hands down the best Chinese food in the south!!! The egg rolls are chunky and deep fried crisp to perfection. The chat siu pork is served sliced, is juicy and delicious. The dry chili chicken is another favorite and is large enough to share. It is served in small crispy chunks with cilantro and chilis and is very spicy. We prefer to order it mild with white rice. The Cookie Monster ice cream is homemade, has chunks of chocolate chip cookies, is creamy, served with a pho spoon and is by far the greatest ice cream of all time.

Yelp
This spot is the new cool kid in town for sure. Everyone has been talking about it and for good reason. Often when I think of Chinese food someplace serving greasy not so great items comes to mind. Blue Giant is stepping the game up for sure! This is not your typical Chinese spot for sure. I visited on a Friday night. The wait was about an hour long. They don't take reservations, but if you go in to put your name down they'll take your number and give you a call when you're up. Big plus! The service was prompt once we sat down. The food came out quickly. & my goodness it was so good! I'm not usually a fan of egg rolls, but the ones here are he best I've ever had. The Dan Dan noodles were spicy and packed with flavor I've been thinking about them for weeks now and my mouth waters every time. I definitely will be coming back to check out the other menu items as well.

Yelp
Buzz has been surrounding Blue Giant for months and I already had a plan of action going in. I find with these hot-spots it's best to try and go at lunch, so I headed over around 1 p.m. on a Saturday. There was a bit of a wait, but we quickly settled into a booth in the cozy dining room. I love the atmosphere of this spot. It's small inside, but not cramped, and the open kitchen provides thrills as you wait for your food. There are a few booths and more seating at the bar space, overlooking the kitchen. Peking ducks hang in the kitchen's window, tempting those dining to try one out for taste. Onto the food! I started with an order of egg rolls ($3 each) and an order of the shrimp and pork dumplings. I was so excited about this egg roll; it came out so fresh that it was steaming when I cracked it open. There is a nice crust on the outside, and it has that nice "crunch" when you bite into it. It's packed with a generous amount of pork and shrimp and the flavors are exotic and familiar. I love a good egg roll and Blue Giant's immediately jumped to the top of my "must order" list. The dumplings are another star; they are pan fried and come with a nice lacy crust on the outside, almost akin to edible art. The dumplings themselves are soft and flavorful and filled with tender pork and shrimp. They have a very light crunch on the outside, while the inside is soft and melts in your mouth. For my entrée I got the Salt and Pepper Catfish. This is piece of catfish sliced, battered and fried, almost tempura style, and served with sautéed onions and peppers, which added some spice. The catfish itself was light and it was a dish that would have easily paired well with some of the other offerings on the menu, especially if you're visiting for dinner and you're looking to go "all out." Don't go into Blue Giant expecting an authentic trip through the Orient or typical greasy American-Chinese take-out. The dishes here err more on the side of Chinese-inspired, but if you like Chinese with an American twist, as I do, then this will be the place for you. *Portions of this review was written, by me, for Offbeat Magazine. Yelp
I have ordered from Blue Giant during quarantine so many times! Yes, it's hard to get through sometimes, just keep calling. Finally tried the spicy Szechuan crawfish and they did not disappoint. Incredible heat and depth of flavor! The Dan Dan noodles are a favorite- although I did notice, as other reviewers have, that the portion size has decreased dramatically since my last order. Disappointing, especially when I look forward to them so much.

Yelp
Delicious, delicious, delicious! Had the pleasure of ordering my quarantined birthday dinner from Blue Giant today. We got the Shrimp Fried Rice (tastes almost smoky, I don't really know how to describe it, and it was phenomenal) We also got the Kung Pao chicken, which was a common meal to get from any Chinese restaurant, however Blue Giant's Kung Pao tastes super "clean" it wasn't greasy-- as other Chinese restaurant tend to be. We also got the Dry Chili Wings and it is HOT! But it's the kind of hot that makes you want to keep eating, I could not get enough of it. (Thank god I was home, cause I think I drank about a gallon of water lol) Overall, this place is amazing. Worth me trying to call the place 30x in a row (there is only one phone and they are always busy, so just keep trying and you'll eventually get someone on the phone and IT IS WORTH IT) 5/5!

Yelp
Okay, wow. So we were passing by and the line was LONG. However, they don't open until 5:30 and it was 5:25 so it makes sense. Couple of my girlies and I went to Claret for HH and decided hey, why not go eat dinner there after happy hour. Our waitress gave us a good tip to call and let them know to put us on the list so we didn't have to sit and wait. Wait was about an hour. We get there and it is a small cozy place filled with great smells. We decided to go for it all. We order three egg rolls, pan fried shrimp and pork dumplings, dan dan noodles (WARNING: these are super spicy), stir fry broccoli, dry rub chicken, and the special pork belly cooked twice. I will say the pork belly was my least fave because of how much fat was on each piece. I know pork belly has fat but this was like the each piece. Honestly, its good and the service was amazing but I will say I would come back once it isn't too busy and try them again.

Yelp
The menu looks to have prices that are in line with other area Chinese restaurants at first with the exceptions of the drinks which are at $3.00 (and they also didn't have any hot or iced tea available yet which is very un-Chinese). My Eggdrop soup was good but they had already put the crunchy wontons in it which had gotten soggy and I generally don't like to have those in my soup anyway so it would be better if they left those on the side for my taste. The Shrimp Wontons had a good taste but were a bit of a small portion for the price on the menu but... they had the wrong price listed so it was a decent deal for $8 instead of $10. The Dry Chili Chicken seemed to be a really small serving size for dinner and it didn't even come with rice (maybe they forgot to bring it?) so that made this dish not very competitive with other area Chinese options. Fried rice is much more expensive here than at other area joints so I'm not sure if you have to order the rice separately for the higher price or if should come with an entree? Overall this place is brand new and just getting up and started so hiccups should be expected. The menu is still very concise for the moment and they plan to add combos for lunch starting later in the week. It was quite crowded during my dinner visit like many new places tend to be when first opening so it will be interesting to see how this restaurant develops. Service was 5 stars but the food I had was certainly more of 3 star experience and the prices certainly made it much less of a value for the quantity along with the lack of rice or other items being included with dinner entrees. There are a lot of Chinese options in the area so hopefully this place can find their niche and get their secret sauce worked out.

Yelp
New-style Chinese food in a gentrified setting. Fairly expensive, but quality.
