21 Road Trip-Worthy Central Coast Restaurants, 2023 Edition

"A star by any measure, owner Bob Oswaks puts out some of the Central Coast’s best breads and pastries from two small storefronts, including this newer one in Ballard (the original is in Los Alamos). The place has become a weekend hang for in-the-know tourists and wine country enthusiasts but is also exceedingly popular with locals in the area who know where to sniff out a great morning meal." - Karen Palmer, Eater Staff

I've been to Bob's more times than I’d like to admit and have tried nearly everything on the menu. The food is hit or miss—sometimes great, other times a letdown. The avocado toast is often served on rock-hard bread, and the egg sandwich comes on an exceptionally thick, dense English muffin. Worst of all, the sausage on the breakfast sandy is so ridiculously salty, and apparently, that’s how they intend it to be. I’ve had it three times, and it’s always the same. As for the specials, I've tried about five different sandwiches, and the Italian was by far the best. Regarding the staff, I’ve read some mixed reviews, but I’ve only been helped by Bob once in my 20 visits, and it was an entirely fine experience. However, the wait times for food are absurd, and it’s not just on busy days. I have to assume they’re making the bread from scratch for every order, it takes that long. The coffee is decent, and I actually enjoy it.

Love Bobs Well when I’m visiting in the area. Lovely spot, terrific bread and pastries. My only feedback the “pot of tea” is actually 1 tea bag with a pot of hot water. it’s weak. Loose leaf tea in a pot done properly would be a big improvement Bob! :)

Bob's Well Bread is a must-stop spot for anyone craving freshly baked goods and a cozy coffee break. From the moment you walk in, the charming ambiance welcomes you with its inviting atmosphere and delicious aromas. Bob's Well Bread prides itself on offering an array of freshly baked treats, from artisan bread to delectable pastries. Each item is crafted with care, ensuring a delightful experience for every visitor. Whether you're in the mood for a flaky croissant, a buttery scone, or a crusty baguette, you'll find something to satisfy your cravings here. While the bakery goods are undoubtedly delicious, one minor suggestion would be to offer the option to have them warmed. There's nothing quite like the comfort of a warm pastry or bread straight from the oven, and providing this option would enhance the overall experience for guests. Despite this small suggestion, Bob's Well Bread remains a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere, making you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. In addition to the mouthwatering baked goods, Bob's Well Bread also offers a selection of quality coffee and beverages to complement your treat of choice. Whether you're grabbing a quick snack on the go or settling in for a leisurely coffee break, this bakery has you covered. Overall, Bob's Well Bread is a delightful gem that should not be missed. With its fresh baked goods, charming ambiance, and friendly service, it's the perfect spot to satisfy your cravings and indulge in a little slice of culinary heaven.

On a road trip we were figuring out whether this place was a good stopover for breakfast. It was indeed. A small bakery that offers a lot more in dining options. The bakery and cafe has a small inner dinning area as well as an outdoor yard. The menu is casual but it offers enough options for breakfast and brunches. Bread is made to the standards found in larger cities. Definitely a worthwhile visit.

Visited twice, 5 stars for our first visit, loved their baguette, blueberry scone (instead of fresh they used dried blueberry, which surprisingly tasted even better, was sweet, tart and juicy!) and our coffee! But can only give 3 stars for our second, think they have some consistency issue. The cappuccino from our second visit tasted like it’s made by a machine on auto mode. The cherry chocolate scone was not comparable to the blueberry one in terms of flavor (tho it’s likely just a personal preference), and the oatmeal raisin cookie’s a bit stale.

The best baked goods I may have ever eaten…. They’ve mastered the dense-dough but crispy outer with almost everything. Must try, yes a little more expensive but 100% worth the baking mastery.

Great coffee shop.. The coffee was great. Storng and warm. The cinammon pastry was so fluffy . The prosciutto sandwich was fresh and tasty. Loved the outdoor sunny sitting. Great fast service. What a jem !

We were excited for a relaxing breakfast during our stay at The Ballard Inn and walked across the street to Bob’s Well Bread at The Ballard Store. The café looked inviting, and there was a clear sign asking customers to wait to be served. However, the person behind the counter immediately and rudely ordered us to stay behind the sign, even though I was simply taking a moment to snap a photo for a potential review. When he raised his voice a second time, it felt unnecessarily hostile. Disappointed by the tone, we chose to leave and found a much more welcoming spot in Solvang. A little hospitality would have gone a long way.
