The Back Bay Lunch Guide - Boston - The Infatuation

"With a bunch of brick and mortar locations and more trucks than Ryder, Bon Me is a known entity at this point, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not one of the best lunch options in the neighborhood. The Stuart Street location of the fast-casual spot makes a really good sandwich with excellent French bread (and has a vegan option, too), but our favorite thing on the menu may actually be the miso kimchi ramen." - dan secatore

Don't bother ordering from their website. The tracking is not updated and food comes late or is left at your door with no notification. Doordash gives better service. As for the food itself, it's generally simple and tasty, but often a bit inconsistent in terms of quantity.

Google
Got the Korean Chicken Sandwich from the food truck. Unfortunately the bread was powdery and the chicken was unseasoned. The sandwich was also very difficult to eat. It also caused some digestive problems to my friend.

Google
Not good. Flavorless. Got the eponymous rice bowl with chicken. And a Vietnamese coffee. Not great. It was fine but not worth it and kind of regrettable

Google
found it quite expensive, nice bread but the tofu was tasteless

Google
my favorite food truck! i get their tofu sandwich, the JP. this location at harvard is very convenient with plenty of outdoor seating.

Insanely good, super healthy.

Yelp
Was looking for a bite to eat after visiting HMNH and found this food truck was nearby in the Harvard promenade area. Lots of seating and a nice water sprinkler situation to cool off from the heat. My partner has a nut allergy and the people preparing our food were very accommodating to his allergy and made sure to prepare his sandwich away from any nuts. I'm vegan so I was able to order the J.P. Sandwich without any spicy mayo. The tofu was softer than I was expecting but honestly it wasn't too bad given it had a nice flavor (and I love eating plain uncooked tofu). The sandwiches were packed with our select protein which really made it worth the money ($24 for the two). Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
First rate. Saw a clip on insta about a Ghibli movie. Soba noodles and tofu with hot sauce. Said I would write a post. He said I didn't have to. I wanted to.

Yelp
it was 3 degrees out today & everywhere nearby was closed for lunch *except* the harvard food trucks! i decided to try bon me because it allowed me to order ahead from the warmth of the science center. i did a "build your own rice bowl" with gochujang chicken and picked jalapeños. not only was my food DELICIOUS, the portions were generous and the service was unbelievably quick and kind :) i didn't love the boba but overall i highly recommend - looking forward to ordering from them again.

Yelp
I got the noodle salad. It was okay. The portion of meat was little and this bowl was expensive and overpriced. The flavor was different and a little weird since it was tangy chicken. I just went here during a rush for lunch. It is located in front of the Science center. It is a popular outdoor spot for lunch.

Yelp
Mediocre food in a convenient location. The quality is not very high: I got a sandwich and the bread was stale. The fillings were good but definitely not freshly made. Also it is sort of expensive for the amount of food you get (not much). However the redeeming quality is that the food truck is usually parked in the science center plaza in the heart of Harvard's campus, which is very pretty and close to many cool things.

Yelp
Having sampled their food truck, I found the food to be of poor quality, and the staff exhibited rudeness. I strongly recommend avoiding them, as consuming their food is likely to result in an unpleasant experience.

Yelp
Loved it! Got the namesake banh mi. It was surprisingly flavorful. The sauce in it was really good, and there was a good amount of meat and veggies in it. I want to come back and try a bowl next time.

Yelp
I'm told this truck is a staple of those who spend time at Harvard above the weird bypass tunnel. It was convenient and, I think, just fine. I had the "namesake": I found the pulled pork to be a bit overpowering, and the bread was squishy for my taste. But the flavors were nice, and pickled vegetables in these are always good.

Yelp
I came here tonight well before it closed, but the two guys refused to serve me. I even confirmed with them that they weren't closed yet. The worst possible service.

Yelp
After a long year not having any Bon Me, i got one today at harvard square. It's rice noodle with miso pulled pork and Vietnamese vinegratte. It was so good. I wish the weather could be a little warmer.

Yelp
Not sure if it was the Harvard truck at the Salem Ma Food Truck Festival but a friend and I shared the "food truck fave" - pulled pork, brown rice, shredded carrots, mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, scallions with a light hot sauce. Very generous portion of rice, average portion of pulled pork, perfect spice (as we asked for a little less than indicated). - $9 We thought it was good but expected to be "wow'd" based on what I've heard. Very friendly service!

Yelp
I've been to Bon Me twice in the last three days, and it's definitely delicious! The menu is well marked about gluten and other allergies! Super helpful. The workers are very cognizant of ingredients. Super convenient, great rice noodles. I go with the salt and pepper chicken, and whichever sauce the worker at the time recommends. This should really be a 4.5 review. Only lost half a star for price - around 9 or 10 bucks for a quick meal in Harvard Square, but the portions aren't huge. But the convenience and tastiness make up for it! The packaging is very cute, too. Would totally recommend, and I'll be back!

Yelp
It's a sweltering 97 degree Fahrenheit day in the home of the Red Sox. Wowza! What do I see yonder? A food truck. Did I just say food truck? I mean a food truck without a line. Well it was 4:30 pm. There is more than meets the eye! It is a Banh Mi food truck! (Banh mi=Vietnamese sandwich with veggies on a French baguette.) Hallejujah! There is someone watching out for me. Being that I will be stuck on a train running five hours to the city, I might as well buy something to sustain myself on the way over. There were two friendly ladies ready to hear what we were considering to eat when we got there. One kindly asked my hubby "how could I help you today?" My husband orders the tofu and shiitake mushroom banh mi which was heavenly. It was spicy, but not incredibly so, just enough to burn slightly to have an implicit understanding that a pepper was sacrificed in the making of this delicious meal. I also noticed they had fresh ingredients: cilantro, pickled julienne carrots, and also pickled white carrot. It was just a blend of sweet, tart, and savory. My favorite part was when the lady making my sandwich asked if I was a vegetarian. I said, "no way, I believe in meat and more meat please and that today was an off day being that we just wanted to try a sandwich with tofu for to balance out our smorgasbord earlier." She told me that "it's cool, so now she can put pate in it as a condiment." Her feeling was that pate would make it even better. In attempt to make my sandwich better, I could not say no to that thoughtful and polite request. And, of course, after the first bite, I felt the effects of my non-vegetarian tofu sandwich in glee. I would definitely come back and bring my friends to eat more banh mi. I also ordered an iced cold Vietnamese espresso. To make it sweet, they used condensed milk, which I absolutely adore!

Yelp
I got a vermicelli bowl from here recently and it was very good and filling. I would come back!

Yelp
For a food truck, I'm very pleased with Bon Me! Transaction was quick, and my food was ready in two minutes which is A+ because I was in a rush to class. I ordered the spicy BBQ chicken in a sandwich, and it was tender and medium spicy. I would say the bread is a bit too dry for the subs, but other than that, the sauce was great. Everything inside the sandwich was pretty good! I'll order again Bon Me!

Yelp
I decided to check out this food truck while in Quincy Square. I hot a rice bowl with salt & pepper chicken and sesame sauce. It was delicious! Just the right balance of meat, rice and veggies. I like spicy food and it did not disappoint. The man who took my order was friendly, too.

Yelp
Bon Me is a staple in Harvard food truck cuisine, available almost every day for lunch and sometimes even dinner. With an Asian fusion menu and an emphasis on Vietnamese cuisine, the food truck serves sort of the standard Americanized Asian food you might expect from a store called Bon Me (a play on the Vietnamese bánh mì), mixing and matching ingredients from different Asian cuisines (Japanese soba noodles with Chinese BBQ pork topped with Vietnamese sauce, etc.) but turning them into a meal that's actually pretty tasty for truck food. I would most recommend the rice or noodle bowls, as they seemed to give the most filling meal and had a lot of variety in taste and flavor. Each bowl has a small salad (with very American greens) and offer several different types of meats and sauces, so you can customize it to your own palate. As with most truck food, they serve food that's pretty expensive for the amount and quality of what you actually get. But compared to most of the other trucks, Bon Me is one of your best bets for a quick meal!

Yelp
I've been here a few times over the last half year or so and my general consensus is that it's a quick, mostly reliable place to get something to eat. I've tried everything from the sandwiches, rice bowls, and drinks and while they're all fine and filling, they don't have that much "zing". I've also recently noticed they don't have the customize option for sandwiches (at least at this location) which is a bummer. I'll still come here on occasion when I know I need something quick & close to work, but I won't actively seek it out.

Yelp
Oh Bon me, you sure know how to keep a gal coming back for more. I'm literally half way through my miso braised pulled pork sandwich wishing you had the three cups chicken or scallion and ginger chicken available so I can eat a second sandwich. I was expecting their Vietnamese coffee to be the typical really sweet milked down version, but boy, your coffee is on point! Perfect balance of bitter coffee and sweetness. Customer service was very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
They take CC and the service was quick. I did enjoy my sandwich & greens very much, and I could see myself eating from this food truck several times a week, especially if I tried a variety of their offerings, but was this experience the epitome of food truck cuisine, I don't think so. The greens were ok, nothing to get excited about. My miso pulled pork sandwich could have used some bean sprouts or cucumber, something to give it some crunch, another texture sensation. Maybe some sliced (mild or hot) jalapeños for an added kick. Miso I think is a subtle flavor to use in this type of pork sandwich, since the typical Chinese bbq pork is very flavorful, often sweet and full of texture. I will definitely be trying out some of the previously recommended salads, etc.

Yelp
Great location for Harvard students and tourists. There were 5 people in front of me but I got my food in 5 min, so I would say they're pretty efficient. The soba noodles were sticking with each other, but it's kinda unavoidable for noodles sitting in a box for a while. I suggest order rice instead. Chicken and sauce tasted good. Be aware that their Thai iced tea is more like made out of Chai tea, not Thai tea. It just tasted very different from other Thai iced teas, not what I expected.

Yelp
Bon Me, aka Old Reliable, is the most consistent of the Harvard Science Plaza food trucks. At lunch when it is food truck central? Bon Me is here. At night when all of the other food trucks have left? Bon Me is here. In the summer when there are fewer students around? Bon Me is here. When you don't have cash but are hungry? Bon Me is here. The bon me with pork is my favorite. The soba and salad are okay, but they feel a bit overdressed. Bon Me, thanks for getting me through the days when I don't want to walk more than 50 feet to get food.
google avatar

Yelp
Bon Me reinvents traditional Vietnamese food. I was pleasantly surprised by the peppercorn cilantro chicken sandwich. The spicy mayo and flavors of the chicken (they use dark meat) blend well with the pickled vegetables. It's a good twist to the traditional banh mi sandwich. If you're looking for a refreshing drink and you like basil, try the basil limeade. I'll definitely stop by the truck again for another sandwich! peppercorn cilantro chicken: $6 basil limeade: $2.50

Yelp
My go-to spot for lunch or dinner when I'm in a rush, class or lab runs over meal times, or I just feel like treating myself. Rice bowl (boxes) are generous in portion size, and the brown rice bowl (sans cilantro it's soapy to me) with Miso Lime dressing is a fan favorite, although I always come back to the sandwiches-- I cycle through the meats, but I love me some Miso Braised Pulled Pork sandwiches! Protip: if you're a messy eater, or have enough time to sit down as you eat, try asking to have your sandwich in a box. It'll be cut in half, and easy to retrieve those pieces of meat that fall out of your generously filled sandwich. Protip 2: know that their bread is generally pretty soft, but as the day wanes on, the sandwich bread may become more and more crackly-crunchy.

Yelp
This review is for the one at the Financial District location: Don't bother. Not worth the wait, the portion, and price. 7 buck for a tiny portion with at least 30 min wait. Better off walking to downtown for a gigantic meal for $6 or go to Chinatown for a real Vietnamese sandwich for $3.5.

Yelp
Though this food truck has its flaws, this is a great go to lunch food truck if you know what to get! After a lot of experimenting, I pretty much always order the soba noodle salad with whatever their specialty meat is or the chicken if they are out of the specialty meat with the lime or sesame dressing. I like this because it's filling but not too much food for lunch. Unlike other food trucks, Bon Me actually has calorie information (!!) on their website so I know exactly how much I'm eating which is great when I'm counting calories. The soba noodle option is a surprisingly low calorie option while still having a carb, which is probably why this is a go to place to me. Things that I don't generally order and why: 1) The Bahn Mi sandwiches - The taste is actually fine but my problem is that they are always falling apart so it's too messy for me to take back to class. I prefer the easiness (and the much lower calorie) of the bowls. 2) The Rice bowls - I actually like the rice bowls more, but they are higher calorie and I can get the same satisfied feeling with the soba noodles instead. 3) The Salads - While this is probably the healthiest option, I find that this is just not enough food for me. And then I've spent ~$10 and am left still hungry which is not great. 4) The Tofu - I think this is the only protein that I actually dislike. It tastes bland to me. 5) The Drinks - The Thai Iced Tea is watery and doesn't taste great. The Vietnamese coffee tastes weirdly chocolatey and not anything like other Vietnamese coffee that I've had/made. I haven't bothered to try the other drinks after these two. It doesn't help that they're over priced. It's not a cheap lunch option (~$10). But it's close to my school, and I know exactly what I'm getting. So I'll continue to come here if I don't feel like trying something new.

Yelp
The tofu bahn mi is not worth your money unless you're absolutely desperate. The tofu was flavorless. The vegetables and sauce in the sandwich were not flavored well. The flavor profile was strange--definitely not authentic, but not an interesting twist, either. Sort of like weird coleslaw? Pass.
google avatar

Yelp
The best quick fast food food truck option in Harvard Square. Your order is prepared quickly, your cones extremely fresh, and it's delicious every time. The balance of western and Asian spices and flavored is done quite well focusing more on the umami sensation. Also the picketed carrots and daikon really give each dish a Vietnamese signature flavor. Also, not to mention, the food is fairly healthy. The staff is extremely friendly and the service is great. But please stay away from the Thai iced tea. That doesn't taste right.
google avatar

Yelp
Seek this truck out. Go online, find out where this truck is going to be in Boston and just go. I got a sandwich there on Father's Day and it was easily the best thing I have eaten in the past 4-6 months. BBQ pork with the pate and whatever else comes with it on a ridiculously good french baguette, topped with a bit of Sriracha...you cannot go wrong. $6!!!

Yelp
Food truck will never let you down.... only some. lol, Bon me is a great food truck that offers a Vietnamese cusine. They have a selection to choose from such as a sandwich, noodles and rice. Upon arrival there were other truck available, so if you're not quite feeling Vietnamese type of food then go for the others. It was really packed when we got there, but it's because it's right next to Harvard and near alot of tourists. The line itself is pretty fast as they have workers both on register and making the food behind them. I reccomended the carribean chicken jerk as it had that jerk in it if ya know what I mean. Seating is available but gets really packed for the table seating, but there are many rocks and ledges that people can sit out on. Not sure there are restrooms nearby, however, overall the food, service, and atmosphere was a great experience, especially on a nice breezy, sunny day!

Yelp
I'm from Queens, but had never had the pleasure of going to the banh mi place in the area, and was lucky enough to end up going here one Monday evening with a friend of mine. I ordered a box with rice and chicken, which was REALLY tasty. We received our orders fairly quickly, which surprised me since the line was somewhat long. I loved the food, but was a bit disappointed at the steep price for what is basically just a very small rice and chicken dish. I would probably go back, but it wouldn't be something that I would seek out because of this. Admittedly, the food here is priced in the same way that everything in the Square is, and it actually tastes much better.

Yelp
I grabbed a rice bowl and a Vietnamese iced coffee from the truck at Athena Health in Watertown. The bowl was a decent size for $8 but I found the chicken a little salty -- I wanted more cilantro/peppercorn flavor that was advertised. I would have preferred some more veggies in the mix in addition to the pickled radish/carrots, a few salad leaves and cilantro sprigs. I didn't like the coffee, which tasted like a powder mix, rather than the iced coffee + condensed milk that I've had previously.

Angela K.

Yelp
This is my go-to truck whenever I am running short on time and don't want to eat Greenhouse food (which are fried and has so much oil). The food is so fresh and satisfying. My favorite so far is three-cup chicken or Miso braised pork in soba noodle salad with spicy peanut sauce. Their Thai tea used to be so much better but seems diluted nowadays. Absolutely love their ginger lemonade!
google avatar

Emma T.

Yelp
I had the BBQ pork sandwich. The only complaint I have is that the "mayo" like sauce that was on the bread, was soooo spicy!! I wish their menu would have said something about how spicy it was; if it had said that I would have gotten it without. The rest of the sandwich was pretty good, the veggies tasted really fresh and crisp. The pork was a little dry however. .... They have great prices though for big helpings. I will definitely track them down again and try a noodle or rice bowl.
google avatar

Rosalind M.

Yelp
I love a good food truck - and this is one. I've had the soup (seasonal and oh so yummy!!) while at SOWA and today, I had the noodle salad with tofu and peanut dressing. I prefer rice noodles, but soba were fine. And the salad was light on dressing - probably better than drowning in it, but it was pretty light... The thing you need to consider with this truck and where I'll focus next time - the bread is amazing and the pork spread so yummy! (I stole a bite from a friend.) If you like ginger, get a Spicy Ginger Lemonade. I love the tangy flavor! Recommend this for a try.

Yelp
Please come to Toronto. I can eat your food all day and night.

Yelp
The Miso Braised Pulled Pork Sandwich is probably the best sandwich I have ever eaten in my life . . . period. I have now eaten at Bon Me trucks at South Station and Harvard Yard, as well as at their actual restaurant at Kendall Square and the food is consistent at all locations which says a lot about how Bon Me is managed in my humble opinion. The bread is soft and light inside and crusty outside (. . . that light french baguette style crusty . . . not that hard and chewy crust like some other banh mi I've eaten). Just the right amount of cilantro (which is a big deal for me since I love cilantro if its the right amount but it can totally ruin a dish if its too much). The pickled carrots and radish add the perfect texture and flavor to compliment the other ingredients. The portion is large, especially for a measly $6, so I'm always full and satisfied. Limeade, sweetened just right. Vietnamese Iced Coffee, dark strong brew with a little milk, also very well done. The Chinese BBQ Pork is also very good. . . . . but nothing beats that miso braised pulled pork.
google avatar

Minh C.

Yelp
I had the salad with spice rub chicken - I am a customer for life. Best of all, the food truck took credit cards (via Square)! The food was good, but I have to remove a star because I think for $7 I didn't get as much food as I would had liked - especially since my base dish was a salad, which I imagine would tack on merely a couple of cents to their COGS if they added a bit more to the box.
google avatar

Marilyn C.

Yelp
Yum! Just ate at this truck at the Charles River Food Truck Festival over in Brighton. I tried food from several of the trucks there and this one was my favorite. The BBQ pork sandwich was delicious - the meat was cooked to perfection, the 'veggie slaw' topping gave it a nice crunch, I always appreciate pickles, the choice of bread (a baguette) was spot on and there was a little spicy kick to round it out. This truck knows how to make a good sandwich. I also got the thai basil limeade and found it to be well balanced and refreshing. After the first round at Bon Me, I went back and got an iced coffee. I wasn't a huge fan of the iced coffee - there was some flavor I couldn't put my finger on that wasn't my favorite. I'm generally not a fan of Vietnamese style coffee so I was taking a risk... the limeade and pork sandwich experience was def. the highlight. Bottom Line: I would eat at this truck again - I'd just skip the coffee.

Yelp
Very solid place, especially for vegetarians. The food is well flavored, and has an unique taste that makes it interesting to eat. The portions are very generous and always filling. The truck is always easily accessible.
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
The food here was fine. A big portion for five bucks, I was pretty underwhelmed by the lack of flavor in the pork. No match for mama Kim's in providence!
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Generally I'm kind of skeptical of food trucks--so often the truck gimmick is a front for bland food served by people who care more about the aesthetics of the truck than the food itself. So I was pleasantly surprised by Bon Me! I had the Chinese bbq pork sandwich, and is was wonderful--the baguette fresh and crunchy, the pork sweet and juicy, and the pickled carrots and daikon fermented enough that I felt like I was doing something good for my gut flora. They're also HUGE, so I can easily wrap up the rest and have it later on for dinner. Since then, this has become a regular stop for me when I'm walking between classes at the divinity school and Harvard Yard. I've never been to their brick-and-mortar restaurant in Kendall, but I'm sure it's just as good. Stick with the pork if you can--I had the Szechuan peppercorn chicken once when they were out of pork and it was sort of dry and relatively bland for something that was supposed to have Szechuan peppercorns in it!

Yelp
This was a food truck location that I tried, it was great.. very spicy and delicious i tried the rubbed chicken with salad. the trucks except credit cards and are very quick to get your food to you. Would Recommend.

Suvin W.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite fast food places where I ate almost everyday. But the portions of protein have been reducing day by day. To make sure I was not imagining one day I went home and measured the chicken and it weighed 90grams. Another day it was 60grams. The staff in the truck has gotten more rude and inefficient as time has gone by. Today was the last straw when I was given the tiniest bit of chicken in my soba salad. I've decided that I will never eat here again. My recommendation is to get more happy staff(or treat them better) and have consistent(does not have to be large but make sure their consistent) portions.
google avatar

Victor W.

Yelp
please close this food truck, just don't taste good if you need to eat and must to avoid dying just order the sandwich
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Pretty much this whole summer the truck down by the aquarium has been a staple of my saturdays. The food is hot, fresh, and tasty! I tend to stick to their rice bowls, which I find incredibly filling. I also have to say that I love their carrot/radish slaw? I think that's what it is, it's tangy and sweet and probably my favorite part of their bowls! When you grab some with some meat it's like an orchastra for your mouth! I've also tried their Bahn Mi, but I found it to be a bit messy and hard to eat for me. I'm a fan of softer breads, but it truly has the french crusty bread quality you expect in a bauguette. Even when there is a long line the service is spot on and tends to be fast, which is important for me since I have a very short lunch break. Only complaint: I wish they'd stay in the same location all the time! They usually spend saturdays in the same area, but not the same spot and sometimes I don't see them coming in because they're on the other side or too far away from where I work to grab lunch at.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
My go-to lunch place on Harvard's campus. The food is cheap, quick, and relatively delicious. I would highly recommend the sandwich or the rice bowl over the sometimes over-dressed salad and noodle bowls. Tip: Go at noon for the best tasting meat, and get the specials rather than the standard fare--it's usually better tasting. The K-town chicken is A+.
google avatar

Tim D.

Yelp
Bon me delivers delicious Vietnamese food at a reasonable price. If you stick to a salad, its relatively healthy and filling. I use to go Momogoose 2-3 times a week for the last 2 years, but their recent price hike has converted me to a Bon Me fan. Bon Me has superior food and is worth the extra .50 cents.

Yelp
My friend bought me one of rice bowl with miso pulled pork. It was super good! Love it!!
