Border Grill Downtown LA Review - Downtown LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"We were certainly sad to see the original Santa Monica location bite the dust, but the downtown Border Grill is still going strong, and it’s time to take advantage. The large, Financial District location definitely gives off a corporate vibe, but the food holds up. Everything from their ceviche to their carnitas tacos to their skirt steak is worth ordering, and the vibe inside is always very relaxed. And at $30 for unlimited tapas and $8 bottomless mimosas, their brunch situation is very serious." - Brant Cox

Legendary creation of two of the hottest chefs in Los Angeles did not disappoint on flavor. All of the food was incredibly tasty, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection as you can see in my photos. What you can't see are the wait times which appears more a matter of being under staffed than I'll preparedness. I happened to sit in the bar area which was not busy after 1 pm and then bartender appeared to have no help which had him running back and forth to the kitchen while trying to tend drinks as well. Do come and experience the food, it's worth the trouble, you will probably fare better in the back where there should more dedicated servers. Put off dining if you are in a hurry or need a quick option, while the food is excellent you could have to leave hungry if service service isn't; I nearly did.

Google
On the border Grill in downtown Los Angeles offers thoughtful, fine dining Mexican food. We there before a concert nearby and we're seated right away (we had a reservation. Closed parentheses in the bar area (that it was actually plenty of seating in the main dining room which looked it might've been a little bit more comfortable in that area to sit.) We are around chips and salsa right away the chips are really good and there are three different kinds of salsa which they bring you, green, Tia, a smoky read, and a hot red – all of which were good. Long live the idea that it Mexican restaurants you should be given free chips and salsa and when you sit down. Occurs on the Mexican restaurants that charge money for chips and salsa. I had the Beyond Meat Albondingas appetizer. I’ve seen Albondingas on various Mexican food restaurant menus before and have never been able to have them because I'm a vegetarian. I was very excited to see the maid here with beyond meat, and they were really delicious with the tomato sauce they were served in and the fresh cheese on top. Thank you so much border Grill for Catering to my diet with this delicious starter. I loved it. For my main, I had the three tacos meal with one each of their vegetarian tacos offerings. These included Tacos Flacos which was served in a lettuce cup instead of a tortilla and filled with mushrooms kale and leeks. It was hearty and good though I didn’t love the sriracha aioli it came with (more my personal preference than it’s quality), A Crispy Rajas which is filled with creamy potatoes, roasted chiles, cheese, avocado and grilled corn relish. This one was olid and physically satisfying but lacked flavor. And also the Sweet Potato Black Bean which was the most flavorful with savory sweet potatoes in it. (This was good but my personal preference would for it to have been more sweet.) These were served with two kinds of rice and black beans…The beans tasted great, but the rice was a tad under cooked for my tastes. We had a bit of an issue with the food taking a while. Apparently the kitchen had lost our ticket…it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal except that we were trying to make it to a concert nearby so when the food finally did arrive we had to eat fairly quickly. How restaurants respond to these kinds of issues is really telling about their commitment to their customers, and in this case they really went above and beyond. The manager personally delivered the food to our table with an apology and an offer to cover the meal. (Doesn’t get any better than that!) And our server had previously brought us a free tamales appetizer to eat while we waited. So although the timing wasn’t great for our particular situation, we felt very well taken care of and were very impressed with how important our satisfaction was to the. (We hadn’t actually complained about the time when all this happened.) We would definitely go back under more relaxed circumstances and try some of the other vegetarian options and we thought it was helpful that the menu was labeled with V and GF for anyone who was a vegetarian and gluten free.

Went for the Dine LA dinner menu. The choices were sumptuous. I was with a friend, so we ordered different selections and tasted each others food. It was all great. Unfortunately, they arent regular menu items. 🙁I haven't been here in a couple of years, but I will definitely come back for the regular menu!

Myself and a group of my girl friends went here for Sunday Brunch. We try different brunch venues every month and this is one of the best brunches we have been to. The unlimited plate option is the best. Come hungry because the food is endless and is delicious. We went at 11 and it wasn't crowded at all. Our waitress was great. Very nice and attentive. Always had our mimosa glasses topped off. What's even better is you can take home what you don't eat. Dessert came with the unlimited option too. We will definitely be going back.

Google
This place was AH-MA-ZING!! My sister and I stayed at the hotel across the street and after searching bottomless brunches in the area we settled on here. We came in and we were seated immediately. Evan, our server, greeted us and took our drink orders. Water and mimosas please lol. They serve the champagne as individual glasses along with a side of orange juice and strawberry watermelon, I believe. Their brunch is tapas style and we ordered as many of the vegetarian/vegan options as possible. Below is what we ordered and my review. Plantain empanadas - didn't care for it. Too sweet for my liking Shaved market salad - tasted fine. Nothing special Green corn tamale - nothing special Ceviche del dia - delicious. You could taste the freshness. Smoked trout salpicon toast - DELICIOUS. Loved it Corn esquite - too much lime Breakfast quesadilla - delicious. Ordered a second order Picadillo bowl - delicious Chilaquiles - too much tomato sauce Chorizo tacos - DELICIOUS! My favorite item that we ordered Banana bread pudding and Aztec parfait - both were good but by time we ordered them we were stuffed lol This was an amazing brunch and definitely recommend. Staff was friendly and we loved Evan. He also takes amazing boomerangs lol.

Tacos were tasty but meet was a bit over cooked. Queso fundido was good. Customer service was ok, we had to ask twice for things to get what we need in a very slow day and time.

Google
Border grill is not your typical Mexican food. They cook with lots of love and flavor with their food. To start the salsa is AMAZING especially the salsa verde! (Warning 2 of the 3 salsas are pretty hot) The quesadilla was phenomenal-oozing with cheese and carne asada. My vegetarian Gf enjoyed the sweet corn tamales we had on our 1st visit. The Queso dip is worth the trip alone. Only complaint is it's a little pricey but other than that the service is great and environment is inviting.

Michael Elliott

Google
Four stars for the great service but the Mexican salad was not very good. Not enought steak and I should have asked for more dressing. I am sure there are other items that are good.

Yelp
(Dined 06/24/22 FR @ 8:00pm): No need to run to the border... just find them at outdoor events or in Pasadena for some grilled tasty Mexican food! I recently enjoyed a viewing of "The Birdcage" during an Eat See Hear event at The Autry Museum Of The American West At Griffith Park when I was first introduced to Border Grill Food Truck. Although I frequently attended, worked, or volunteered at the myriad of year-around events throughout Southern California, this was my very first encounter with this meals-on-wheels although I was very familiar with their various brick-and-mortars before they all closed several years ago. However, I've never eaten from their truck before, so this was like revisiting an old acquaintance. Would this be a pleasant dining experience as it was in their restaurants!? QUICK BIO "Welcome to the Border Grill Food Truck, a gourmet food truck featuring conscientiously-sourced tacos, burritos, bowls, and more from celebrity Chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger of Bravo's "Top Chef Masters" and Food Network's "Too Hot Tamales". A uniquely fun way to feed a hungry crowd at any location, The truck is a party on wheels, perfect for large festivals or any pirate event, including birthdays, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, office parties, and production shoots. And our famous margaritas are available too!" PURCHASE Crispy Baja Fish Burrito ($10.00): Filled with red rice, organic black beans, chopped romaine, Mexican cheeses, homemade salsa fresca, and grilled corn relish all wrapped in a large flour tortilla, this two-hander was large, thick, and tasted healthy! There was plenty of beans and rice but honestly could've used more fish which had a nice crunch but seemed limited as I made my way to the end of the burrito https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=w2biostqxBJxpHwaWU3FaQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. 5pc Dulce De Leche Churro Tots w/Whipped Cream ($5.50): Dark cinnamon mounds the size of golf balls, I had to try this unique take on one of my favorite desserts. Each churro tots was warm with a moist inside, and although the whipped cream was appreciated it really didn't add much to the dessert https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=bKDaIo5Zj_nhJw8lKIBVWg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. SERVICE A friendly man greeted me, quickly took my order, and a little over ten minutes later my order was ready and given to me by a different man (I imagined the chef) which was amazing based on the decent line they had in front of and behind me. All was straightforward and greatly appreciated! PARKING (FREE) Being a food truck, they were at the beck and call wherever the event was held. In this case, the event took place at a museum adjacent to a zoo with plenty of free parking all around. Another option was a driving service like a bus, taxi, Lyft, or Uber (no nearby Metro train station) - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Your standard self-sufficient food truck with exterior an exterior food menu https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=6vBepO_PvkR3IVtPGL7Cgg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, order and pick up windows, an area for condiments, napkins, and utensils, no designated seating area, and natural lighting was prevalent during the daytime while minimal electric street and truck lighting glowed at night. There were no TVs unless you considered the movie screen and movie that played in the background. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=K_7W7lUgB0cqBlvNsP5hyQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I wouldn't necessarily cross any borders to get to The Border Grill Food Truck, but I would consider them again based on my previous enjoyable times with the restaurants. The menu was extremely limited (tacos, quesadillas, burritos, bowls, sides, desserts, drinks). As expected, the prices were on the higher end but not extravagant. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of my burrito (just more fish, please), and the service was more than adequate. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $15.50 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Yelp
They were in Culver City & I got a chicken, pork, and beef taco, guac/chips, and a boxed water. Each taco was very good! I was worried about how spicy the salsas would be, but it was good! On the mild/medium side. Guac was fire! $6.50 and a lot of guac. Each taco was about $3-$4. Boxed water was $2.50. They also had battered fried shrimp tacos and sweet potato tacos. Food came out fast. Was limited menu because it was a food truck event/long lines so no other dishes except bowls. Would have tried quesadilla or burritos if they had it. Would eat again! Def the steak, chicken tacos & guac/chips. The pork taco was kinda bland/not as flavorful as the rest.

Yelp
I tried Border Grill for the first time for lunch today. They are so quick getting your food, everyone was surprised. You order your food and a minute later, your order is ready! I got two carnitas tacos with chips and guac for $10.50. It was so good! I'm full but I don't have that heavy feeling. They didn't skimp on the meat, which I appreciated. They bring chips and guac to a whole other level. When you try this, you HAVE to buy the chips and guac!!!!!!!!!! . Also, all of the employees in the food truck were handsome ;)

Yelp
Border Grill catering has come to the Rose Bowl, and I am so happy that they are there. We got the barbacoa nachos for $14, which is a HUGE serving for two people for sure. The bowl is loaded with fresh corn tortilla chips, refried black beans, tender barbacoa meat, pico de gallo, guacamole and pickled jalapenos. The nacho cheese sauce is LEGIT! As in, it is not from a can and is made with real cheese. And it is spread evenly through the bowl. You get the good stuff with every bite. Food trucks and stadiums are expensive. Choices are limited. The nachos at Border Grill catering are a GREAT choice! I'm a fan.

Yelp
We had one of these trucks at work for lunch courtesy of our Vendor HP we didn't have a menu choice it was all prepared a ready to pick up we got 3 tacos ( Carnitas, Carne Asada and chicken) rice beans and chopped salad. It was ok the rice was kinda hard but tasty the tacos were ok I think the carnitas one was the best the carne asada one was a bit too spicy for me and the chicken was a bit too lemony. The salad was good had a little kick to it as well. Lastly the beans were ok. Knowing we had a limited menu since it was catered to us I can't say how the other stuff are. Overall an average taco truck maybe if I was able to have the tacos the way I wanted may have been better I'm very picky on what I like in my tacos.

Yelp
Where's the Meat?! Ordered the burrito with carnitas and cilantro garlic fries. Very disappointed with the amount of meat in my burrito! I cut off a 1/4 of my burrito to share with my coworker, took 3 bites in and got my first piece of meat. With each bite I was hoping to catch a piece of meat. By 5-6 bites in, I was done before I could finish it. Fries were good though. That was their saving grace, but when they come back to my work building, never again. I'll let the people in my office know too.

Yelp
I recently went to an event at the Hammer Museum where the truck was parked for the night. I was pretty stoked to discover tacos waiting for me on the curb. My order: 2 carnitas tacos $6, chips and guacamole $5 + $2 tip = 13 and some change. Pros: The price seemed reasonable to me considering the owner was once a guest judge on Top Chef. The person who took my order was friendly, and the line went pretty quick. The guacamole was pretty good. They provided a generous scoop and it was well-seasoned with lovely little crunchy bits of red onion. Cons: The tacos were incredibly disappointing. The meat portion was skimpy and they were void of any vegetable/sauce/garnish. The woman who handed me my food seemed upset/surprised that I wanted salsa, which was puzzling. What started out as a promising taco truck experience quickly devolved into sadness and disappointment. Sigh.

Yelp
The tacos were tasty. I had a carnitas and a fish taco. $7.00 for 2 tacos. I would have no problem with that price if they were a little larger. They were tiny. I would say smaller than a street taco. I expected them to be small because of the other reviews but was surprised as to how small they were. I decided to purchase them to see how they taste. Taste 4 stars. Size. 2 stars Cost. 2 stars I decided to give them 3 stars total.

Yelp
Convenient food truck, tried their burrito, which actaully tasted good, organic red rice, chopped romaine, mexican cheeses, grilled corn relish, salsa fresca, add guacamole, organic black beans, skirt steak, expect around $10 per order.

Yelp
3.5 stars 5 stars for the churro tots and the outstanding friendly service 3.5 stars for the remaining food I tried 2 stars for pricing The best thing at the Border Grill Truck are the churro tots! They are more of a cinnamon donut than a churro but who cares cuz they are absolutely tasty little morsels of goodness! Five star quality those tots! They are served like donut holes and you get 5 of them with a runny whip cream sauce. Or maybe the whip cream melted because the tots were served super warm! I can't be sure because I stole a tot from a friend who ordered them. I ordered one Potato Rajas Taco $2, one Carne Asada Quesadilla $5, and one Green Corn Tamal $4 with tax added my total order for 3 items was $12 and change which I thought was a little on the high end for the amount of food I ended with. I found the Green Corn Tamal and the potato taco to be the best items out of the 3 things I ordered. I would rank them both as 3 and 1/2 stars as they were not the best versions I had of either item nor where they the worst. I liked how the tamal was served. It came in a cone cup with a spoon so it basically was the innards of a tamale. The mixture was very tasty but LuLa's in Santa Monica still serve the best green corn tamales in LA (in my opinion). The Carne Asada Quesadilla was too greasy for my taste. The carne was good but I wasn't a fan of the cheese they used to mold the quesadilla together so ultimately I didn't really end up enjoying this particular quesadilla. The service was spectacular in that the people working the truck were very friendly. The wait like any other truck was a tad long but that is the nature of food truck chasing. A true chaser waits! One more thing about the service....I love it when people smile cuz you know they care about what they are serving. Overall a good experience.

Yelp
I've seen the Baja Fish Taco on the food channel so many times and always wanted to try it. Decided to give the truck a try finally. Baja Fish Taco - $3.75 - Basicly like any other fish taco I have had. I was really hoping to mind blown because of the price but it was just average. It was such a let down. The fish batter was decent but nothing special. The only difference is the aioli but even that wasn't worth the price. I have had a lot better fish tacos for a lot cheaper.

Yelp
The tacos are legit delicious & flavorful. Carnitas Taco: packed with meat, & the corn tortilla tastes like home. I was surprised at how they didn't skimp on the meat! Crisp cabbage & flavorful Serrano salsa was the perfect kick of flavors. Beer Battered Fish Taco: shut the front door! This taco was battered and fried to perfection. Juicy fish, golden batter that is not runny on the inside. That is a first for me & I haaaaate battered fish tacos usually because of that! Hands down best fish taco evaaaah to grace my palate. Skirt steak: spicy, & peppery. Tender & good amount of meat but I'm not a fan of pepper so it was my least favorite. Yes..I'm weird. They're on the west side today in Playa so make sure you stop by and check them out because they are awesome!

Yelp
Tried the steak burrito and garlic cilantro fries. The food came out a bit cold, and I had to microwave it for a minute for it to be the right temperature for me. I can imagine this might ruin the experience for some people. Steak burrito was pretty good, the tortilla was the right amount of soft/crispy, was a good size with plenty of meat and I was full afterward. The fries though were some of the best fries I've ever had. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth on the inside, good amount of spice. I'm wondering though, if they were only good because I heated it up beforehand....

Yelp
This truck came to our school and jacked up the price by a dollar on the quesadillas. I asked if they honored the online price and they said no. Unacceptable. Advise if your are going to jack students don't put prices online for them to see that you are jacking them. Can not comment on food because I can not condone giving business to a company that jacks students. -------- Update: Was contacted soon after this post and the management apologized. Said they should have honored the price. It was a simple case of not updating their web site not that they were jacking the customer. They also offered to give the truck another chance on them next time they visit. So I have added 2 more stars after taking all this into consideration. On a side note the food is good. I have had it prior to this incident and the prices are reasonable. It was more of the principle of the matter. That said I appreciate them acknowledging their error and doing their best to correct it.

Jane N.

Yelp
I was at Stanley Mosk and this food truck was in Grand Park for lunch. I would have to agree with most of the non five and four star reviews here. I've had food from the restaurant years ago, and remember the food being delicious. This truck... not so much. You know when you go to chipotle and you pay ten dollars for a giant burrito with a tasty selection of ingredients? Not at Border Grill. Just imagine chipotle but 1/2 the size and more expensive but also without any flavor? If you're pressed for time and options, and if there's no line, this truck would be sufficient. If you're someone who looks forward to your meals, my experience was that I wished I had eaten something else.

Yelp
The fish taco was great. Seasoned and fried to perfection. The steak taco was awesome. A little spicy goodness. Their guacamole is smooth and fresh and the chips are yummy.

Yelp
Not bad. I had the Chicken bowl and one Carnitas taco. Total = $10.75. Food was okay. It seemed healthy and filling so there's that.

Yelp
Well my wife & I have not been to Border Grill since they moved from Santa Monica. We decided to give it a try again and visited the LA restaurant. The service was excellent, water was friendly and explained the menu to us. Saturday (brunch) we decided to do the brunch small plates. We tried everything on the brunch menu. Ceviche, Steak & eggs, green tamales.... The overall rating for the food was just below average and considering we've eaten at the original restaurant for years this was not even close. There are way better restaurants to visit in LA. So try something else instead.

Yelp
Churro tots needs a photo! I kept seeing churro tots highlighted on the reviews but no photos (prior to trying)! So I fulfilled my duty to take one before I devoured these delightful treats! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/VKBkOIhv8yc1rqBOebYs0A?selected=sXZ8gzd6Oyt3F4R8ZsbbCg They were warm, soft and chewy with yummy cinnamon, filled with dulce de leche and perfect with the whipped cream. 5 pieces for $3.00 was not bad. I had seen in westways magazine months back a note to get the churro tots and avocado tacos here. Dude was hesitant about getting a no meat taco but agreed to try something different. And different it was in a yummy way!!! The avocado was covered in black sesame, quinoa and amarantha, and was topped with a corn mayo-relish, chipotle salsa and pickled onions.http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/VKBkOIhv8yc1rqBOebYs0A?select=7FuhvN_4x-J24BmshSSxVg I have to say we both agreed it was fabulous! I wanted more. The carne asada taco with lotsa guac looked good too tho!

Yelp
This was the food truck today at my work. It was good. Nothing crazy good about it but not bad at all. I got the carnitas salad bowl with pinto beans. The carnitas didnt really stand out flavor wise. They were good. Just not too tasty. The heat of the carnitas and pinto beans were medium. Note that I got this salad at 1pm and the truck has been there since 10am. The pinto beans are cooked with bacon. You can see some bacon bits within the beans. I added the guacamole for $1.75. Im a big guac buff, and this guac was mid standard for me. I could have done without. The bowl was filling as a whole. It was maybe a bit priced too high but eh its ok. I give this truck a C+. $7.50 for carnitas salad bowl + $1.75 for adding on guac = $9.25. Would I get this again? Maybe. I'd have to be out of lunch options and hungry.

Yelp
I came across the Border Grill Truck today in Woodland Hills by dumb luck and with only a few people in line, figured I'd give them a try. It was shortly before 1:30 when I got up to the window and was told I was the last customer for the day (that good karma came back!). At that point there were only tacos left which was fine with me. My order was as follows: Carne Asada Taco (x2) - with caramelized onion, salsa fresca and guacamole Cilantro Chicken Taco - with tomatillo and creamy salsa fresca Yucatan Pork Taco - with pickled onions and orange salsa I first went with the carne asada which was cooked perfectly; the salsa and guacamole were both fresh and really added to the taco. Up next was the cilantro chicken taco and really liked the creamy salsa. I wasn't sure what to think when I first saw it but enjoyed it more and more with each bite. However, the star of the day was the yucatan pork taco. The pork had amazing flavors and the orange salsa added a flavor explosion. By far their best of the three tacos that I tried. As much as I liked the quality of the food, and as friendly as they were, and as quick as the service was I wonder how much is being charged for the name? I find $14.50 for four "mini tacos" and a soda to be a bit steep considering I could have walked a few blocks to Canoga Park and got a lot more for a lot less.

Yelp
We had Border Grill cater a lunch for my company and everything about the experience was so simple and easy for us. This is the second time we've had them cater lunch for us, serving about 250 ppl each time. Jodie was very accommodating with helping us put together the menu and ensuring that everyone had something they could enjoy. We had the Citrus Chicken Tacos, Carnitas Tacos, and Sweet Potato & Black Bean Tacos, which were all amazing! What else can I say except that all of the meat was so tender and the sweet potato so well seasoned and absolutely delicious. The salsa though... SO GOOD! Jeez! The team that arrived to serve us were very friendly. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and am insanely grateful for you all. Can't wait to have you back!

Yelp
Something is wrong when your burrito is 90% beans. Food: Came here with a bunch of people from work who love, love, love Border Grill. I was pretty psyched to try it out since I'd never been and everything on the menu sounded amazing. I ordered the citrus chicken burrito (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/border-grill-truck-los-angeles?select=sXZ8gzd6Oyt3F4R8ZsbbCg#q7Xvw8JATMrbcM_0p95bWQ) hoping that the portion size would be larger than the tacos. While I was correct in my assumption, I didn't anticipate that the burrito would contain the amount of chicken usually found in one taco. I think I ate through two thirds of the burrito before I encountered my first piece of chicken. It was also one of the last pieces of chicken. Even worse, the rice and beans were largely unseasoned. Atmosphere: It's a truck. Props to them for picking one of the swankier locations in Pasadena to hang out. Service: I think they must've forgotten about my order or did everything with citrus chicken last because I waited for my burrito for an eternity. I think at least 5 people who had ordered after me got their food before mine came out. Everyone who I came with had finished eating by the time I got my burrito. Synopsis: Maybe my experience was a fluke, but it was bad enough to be rather memorable. I'd pretty much never try this truck again. It was a total rip off.

Yelp
I went by UCLA's Court of Sciences today to give Border Grill a taste of my opinion. Waiting in line for about fifteen minutes wasn't bad. I ended up ordering the carne asada quesadilla, chicken taco, and splitting some fries. While waiting, and having a soda, I couldn't help but notice the longer line across with the Nom Nom truck. Who cares, right? The food was overall, dismal. The quesadilla has little to offer besides a soft flour tortilla, chewy meat pieces, and cheese. I couldn't eat most of it because the meat didn't allow itself to be broken down. Fat kept on getting in the way. The taco was probably the best part here. While the onions overpowered the whole taco, the chicken was plenty. I couldn't tell if the corn tortilla was freshly made or taken from a bag bought at a grocery store. Sadly, it felt like the latter. The fries were soggy, but no matter, I gave it a shot. It had too much seasoned salt on it. I couldn't finish it either. Parking at this location is near impossible, so it brought down the value anyone chasing this truck at UCLA. I was very disappointed with the food, because it wasn't served hot, and the cost for the items are too high. While most food trucks do charge about $3 for a taco, I think the best consumer choice is to go to a authentic restaurant. Ergo, it brought down the value of the truck's food. As a truck operating against other trucks, I still was not impressed. I say, try it once, or just skip it.

Yelp
The truck was in Cerritos for lunch in a nearby business park so I stopped for a bite. There was no line at all which doesn't bode well for the future of food trucks coming to this town. I have come to understand that food trucks provide expensive but delicious snacks. Unless you have a tiny tummy they aren't going to provide a full meal to fill you up for less than $10. What I am saying is that the tacos are small! I got a Yucatan Pork Taco, a Carne Asada Taco, and their famous churro tots. Both tacos were very delicious. The meat was cooked and seasoned wonderfully. My only complaint is that the tortilla is too small and it is impossible to eat. You will be picking half the spilled contents out of the bottom of the box. They need to provide forks (I'm told they have them - you just need to ask!). The churro tots were a great treat. Crunchy and cinnamony outside and soft and sweet inside. And whipped cream for dipping.

Yelp
Second course from this year's OC Foodie Fest was the "Master's Meal" combo from the Border Grill truck. If you watched this year's past Top Chef Masters, they were Chef Mary Sue Milliken's winning dishes from the show. I thought everything was delicious, and packed some great flavors. Here's the breakdown: Quinoa fritters (4 stars) - I love to cook quinoa, as it serves as a good alternative to the heavier, starchier carbs like rice and pasta. Deep frying it into fritters with cotija cheese and aji amarillo aioli (mustard-like)? I'm all there. The crunchy exterior (aztec grain) complimented the soft interior. It may look dry, but it's surprisingly moist on the inside. Carne asada quesadilla (3 stars) - executed well, good flavors from the lime marinated steak. Nothing terribly exciting or original, the tortilla was a bit limp and could've been grilled longer for more crisp -- overall, just a solid quesadilla that I found myself finishing up rather quickly. Churro tots (5 stars) - my favorite from the truck and dessert overall from the OC Foodie Fest. Forget all the shave ice, ice cream concoctions, fancy drinks, etc. Imagine if a churro and a tater tot got busy in a wild and crazy night. The end result would be these churro tots. The dulce de leche flavor just pops, and the cinnamon sugar gives it a subtle sweetness. Dip into some homemade whipped cream, and I'm in churro tot heaven.

Yelp
So after I went to the Doctor today I cruised around the block and headed back down Hollywood blvd, then I notice some signs Kaiser Permanente Farmers Market at the Barnsdall Gallery, so I glance over as I'm driving right by it and see a Black truck that says Border Grill, Hmmmm I turn around and park to check things out. Ahhh NO lines, NO waiting I'll check it out.......http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/VKBkOIhv8yc1rqBOebYs0A?select=mEtqBQIbq0zMpBJIUbAYDw So I order 1-Yucatan Pork Taco $2.50, Rosted achiote pork, Pickled onion, ORANGE salsa (Si Naranja) 1-Carne Asada Taco $3.00, Carmelized onion, Salsa fresca, Guacamole......http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/VKBkOIhv8yc1rqBOebYs0A?select=H0QWA6dX2IBLrSAnZV6phg The tortillas were slightly hard not that big of a deal, the Carne Asada taco was pretty good but nowhere near worth the $3.00 price tag for street food!, the Yucatan Pork taco to me was a mess.....with the pickled onion (that red stuff) and actual BIG chunks of ORANGE their version of a salsa, I honestly could NOT get any flavor from the pork!. And their LARGE beverage selection of Lemonade, Ice Coffee or Bottled Water........... I'm sure these guys do OK with all the trendy hipsters that find it fun to twitter and chase a truck around (FAIL).........but it's just way overpriced and only 1 of 2 tacos were worth eating. SORRY, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger Border Grill Truck 2.5-Stars

Yelp
I came here during the OC Fairground food truck event, which I love! So many good trucks, great space, and beer. weee! :) The Peruvian ceviche is really good, great spice and flavor. I love the cone idea and it is easy to eat.The potato raja tacos yummy too. I also enjoyed that the prices on this truck are not super expensive and the dishes are smaller in size. I want to try ALOT of things when I am at a food truck event. After all, this is suppose to be street food. Easy and portable. I feel a lot of food trucks are loosing sight of that idea. Having items $10-12 dollars and not being able to eat without a knife and fork and a butt load of napkins, what's that point? I might as well go to a sit down restaurant. Loved it, I hope they come around to OC more.

Yelp
Raw fish and tamales in a cone....churros in ball form? Sure, why not? CHURRO TOTS http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/border-grill-truck-los-angeles?select=4B0VkKeMkL8cb7tS36ZZXw#4B0VkKeMkL8cb7tS36ZZXw Might be the sweetest, tastiest balls I've ever put in my mouth from a truck. Yum, tasty gimmicks.

Yelp
Border Grill Truck caught my eye for two reasons: One was the reviews online and two was the Top Chef Masters signage. Very cool indeed. It also had a fairly long line just to note. In the end, I come away conflicted but fairly sure of my opinion - its pretty good but only if you get the dessert and add all the other food options after. Border Grill sells a variety of different tacos, quesadillas, and fritters along with bottled drink (the cap opener is pretty cool). The price range is about $3-$10 depending on what you get as well as combos. I had the Top Chef Masters combo meal which comes with a quesadilla, quinoa fritters, and churro tots for $10. I have to admit, my disappointment came in the fritters and the quesadilla. The fritters were interesting...the texture being grainy and the aioli having a unique tinge. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to win me over. The taste was still a bit bland (even with my favorite goat cheese), needing perhaps more sauce or a bit more seasoning. I believe there were 4-5 fritters. The (carne asada) quesadilla I had was also interesting and better than the fritters. I especially loved the cheese which felt like it was a mix between cottage and swiss with a fairly good carne asada. However, once again, it just lacked much of a punch coming in the flavor department. But hey...the churro tots really made life all better. They were absolutely delicious. Coming in literally 6 balls sprayed with cinnamon, whip cream, and literally packing in dulce de leche into a ball, it was flavorful, not too heavy, and absolutely delicious. It's something that I could imagine eating just walking down the street or during dessert and better than simply a doughnut ball or churro; it just feels all right. A couple notes about the aesthetics. One thing I appreciated was the food was easy to eat and never felt messy. Also, the truck itself was working hard the night I went with two people inside doing absolutely everything with a long line. I have to hand it to them, they were friendly and were able to be accommodating as well. The truck does need aluminum foil to make wrapping items easier along with napkins/hand sanitizer and some other small sauces (although I understand the last point is more because of tasting the full flavor of the dish rather than soaking on sauces). All-in-all, Border Grill has my curiosity peaked. A ho-hum appetizer and interesting (but still could be better) entree ended with an absolutely delicious dessert. Its definitely worth a taste (especially those churro tots) but temper your expectations for now...

Yelp
Oh snap! The BGT is tha bomb! I checked em out at the Long Beach Food Festival. Here's how it went down: Peruvian Ceviche: Mahi mahi, lime, ginger, aji amarillo chile, and pickled onion, all lovingly hugged by a corn tortilla cone. The salty crispiness of the tortilla chip cone really set off the extreme limeyness nicely. I was very impressed by both the fresh taste and portability of this offering. It was sold out by the early afternoon. Potato Rajas Taco: Roasted potatoes, chiles, mexican cheeses, and pickled onion in a small corn tortilla. This is not your run-of-the-mill potato taco (not that there is ANYTHING wrong with regular potato tacos)! This has what is more like potatoes you'd find in a stew. The flavor was very unique (good unique), which is exactly what I look for when trying something new. So, that's two out of two really good tastings. The guy who ran the truck was a little on the sassy side (I think he called me "honey" or something like that), but it's all good. He made a little joke to every customer as they ordered, and everyone appreciated his fun personality. Making my decision about what to order was really tough, because I'd love to try everything on the menu. Not to end on a bad note, but BGT was the ONLY truck that charged me tax that day, even though I believe they only accepted cash. I guess they're keeping consistent with their brick & mortar restaurants..

Yelp
It makes total sense. If anyone was going to do a gourmet food truck with high end versions of street tacos, it should be the Two Hot Tamales who do that on a regular basis at their restaurant. On my first visit, I started with a two taco combination. The Yucatan Chicken was very pleasant to eat because the chicken was topped with a generous handful of crisp vegetables. The julienned radishes were cool and crunchy and the pickled onions added a vinegary tang and sweetness. The tortilla was warmed through so it definitely felt freshly made. The other taco was less memorable with grilled pork and a crema sauce. I missed the texture that the chicken taco had. The taco combination came with cumin fries, which are regular french fries dusted with a dash of cumin. It tasted exactly like what you think cumin fries would taste like, which is pretty unmemorable. The next visit, I tried the ceviche cone. I was concerned about the $5 price tag but it turned out to be my favorite Border Grill Truck offering thus far. The idea of a ceviche tostada is easily translatable to a crispy fried cone filled with ceviche. The cone itself was nicely fried and I loved breaking off chunks of it to eat with the fish. I was pleasantly surprised at how much fish they managed to wedge into that cone and each bite was firm, sweet, and well-marinated in lime, ginger, & ajillo chili. I loved Border Grill's pickled onions so I was pleased to see the cone topped with a good amount of it. Unfortunately, the Yucatan pork burrito was underwhelming. The burrito was quite small and was also disproportionately filled with black beans, pico de gallo, and rice. The tortilla was toasty, which I appreciated but the flavors were too ho hum and the portions small for this to be something I'd go out of my way and pay premium for.

Yelp
Considering how long we waited for our food here, I was expecting something really amazing. Instead, the food was mediocre...the only thing I can say that I really liked from here was their Peruvian ceviche. The fresh fish was well seasoned with tangy lime juice and pickeled onion--extremely flavorful and refreshing. We also tried their carne asada quesadilla with guacamole. Not a huge fan of the special cheese they used and there wasn't quite enough meat in there! The churro tots tasted like...balls of churro-- nothing amazing! Maybe they would've been better if they had been hot-- ours seemed like they may have been from an old batch or something. Overall, the food was okay. It's debatable whether I'd stand in line for 20+ minutes again to try some of their other items though!

Yelp
I found this truck on Cole Street near the CNN building yesterday, and while I enjoyed the food, I didn't find it a great value at all. I had the Poblano Quesadilla, which was $5.00, a lot of money for a non meat item and I spent another $2.00 on a Potato Rajas Taco. And then I spent another 68 cents on tax, because unlike most trucks, Border Grill adds tax afterward. I asked the clerk about that and she explained that they "have to because it is affiliated with the restaurant". Of course that is pure silliness, but I imagine she was just repeating what she was told The items were tasty though, the quesadilla was on a fresh flour tortilla with a combination of three cheeses cotija, machego, y, panela. It was delicious. As was the Potato Rajas Taco although I found it to be on the tortilla on the small side, and not able to support the weight of the potatoes, onions, chopped chiles and cheeses. I think, but am not certain that they use the same cotija, machego, and panela mix that i got on the quesadilla. "Gourmet Food Truck #88 on my never-ending quest to try every truck in So Cal"

Yelp
Another truck stop. But the price kinda offsetted my hopes for giving this truck more stars Found the truck parked in LA County Fair. Hungry and a bit buzzed, my friend and I devoured the Poblano Quesadilla - roasted poblano chiles, chipotle salsa. I also added Guac which immensely improved and added an extra flavor! Order also came with rice and black beans which both were good! Price was $10 for the Quesadilla and an extra $1 for Guac. Im hoping the price is not the same outside the fair because dont think its worth the money. If i try this place again, and the price is decent.. i might bump a star up. off to my next stop..

Yelp
I went to the Red Bull Soapbox races in Downtown and was starving so I headed to the concession stands and it was mostly taco type trucks including the Border Grill Truck. Outside of the truck was a gentleman that was taking orders then you handed the paper order to the truck. About 3 minutes later I had my order. Oh...my order...it was a Green Cone Tamale. I had to ask what in the hell that was and this is it. It is basically a veggie tamale minus the corn husk in a paper cone (the kind you would have a sno cone in) topped with salsa and creme fresh with a spoon. It was very tasty and filling too. I liked that it was so portable so I could walk around and eat unlike my SO that ordered the pork taco and had to find a table to eat at. He said the taco was good but not great. Now that I am moving to dtla I plan to hit up some of these mobile places for lunches.

Yelp
We stumbled across this truck at the DTLA Art Walk. I've always loved the restaurant in Santa Monica, so we tried it out. Between us, we got the avocado taco, carne asada quesadilla, churro tots, chicken taco and fish taco. Churro tots were my FAVE! Hot, crispy on the outside, thick and cakey on the inside, with fresh whipped cream with cinnamon on the side. So heavenly. I wish there were a little more whipped cream, but I loved these and we inhaled them. Quesadilla - Is a quesadilla EVER bad? My friend's was great, with a crispy tortilla, flavorful carne, and guacamole on the side. Tacos - I loved the unusual, gourmet spins on the usual street fare. The avocado was covered in seasoning and seemed to be fried, with a sweet, creamy corn relish. It was delicious. The fish taco's creamy salsa fresca and honey chipotle was a great twist on your ordinary Rubio's/Baja Fresh fried-fish-with-cream-sauce-and-cabbage deal. Both tacos were absolutely delicious. My complaint, and the reason why I'm holding back a 5th star, is the prices! Sure, I know you have the big name, the celebrity chef attachment, and gourmet ingredients, but $3 for a baby taco that's smaller than anything I've ever seen for 80 cents at a taco truck is a little absurd. Loved this truck and the service, but I'd go back for reasonable prices.

Yelp
I had their chicken burrito for lunch. I've eaten at this truck at least 10 times before. I've also been to the brick and Mortar shop in SaMo. Food is delicious as always. Portions have gone down with time. I'm still slightly hungry after the burrito. 5 stars in taste 2.5 on portion size.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Mary Sue Millikan and Susan Feniger since I was a kid...literally! I watched The Two Hot Tamales show on public access before there was an Emeril, before there was a Food Network. I always watched them cook and their enjoyment for food, flavors and fresh ingredients with awe and admiration. Roomie and I attended the Long Beach Street Food Fest and the Border Grill Truck was there. I was SOOOOO excited and everything looked so appealing. I wanted to order one of everything but exercised some restraint and ordered one of ALMOST everything. Yucatan Pork Tacos were amazing. Flavorful, seasoned, shredded pork with a lovely sauce and shredded, picked beets on top? I HATE beets but this was a really nice surprise that added a punch of color and flavor. Chicken Taco was very good. Tender, flavorful and well seasoned. Carne Asada Taco was piled high with meat and fresh pico de gallo and lots of cilantro. The tortillas on all of the tacos were amazingly fresh and texturally spectacular. Not hard/crisp but not soft. Really, really nice. The Poblano Quesedilla was stuffed full of cheese, poblano chilies and jalapenos. While I love hot food, I'm a total wuss about it but the heat on this was smokey and sweet, cut by the plethora of cheese....The Carne Asada Quesedilla was probably the best I've ever had anywhere. Jam packed with fresh, seasoned tender meat chunks, ooey, gooey cheese and pico de gallo. I could have eaten 10 of these babies! The Green Corn Tamal was a paper cone fulled with amazingly sweet, succulent flavorful corn tamale type filling (less the masa on the outside) and topped with pico de gallo and a dollop of sour cream. This item is such a smart idea with the flavor profile, texture and concept being completely off the hook. The 12 year old Jr. Foodie insisted on the Churro Bites. Non dessert person (me) was persuaded to take a bite and was pretty much blown away. Not overly sugary, not too heavy on the cinnamon with a lightly crisp outside and a soft, borderline gooey inside. At first I thought this was a little weird, but then realized I actually enjoyed it. The vanilla cream/whipped cream served on the side was a nice accompaniment. I've loved these two gals for years and will continue to be a huge fan. Their food is amazing, their personalities are amazing, their truck is TOTALLY cool (awesome dancing pig on the side of it) and their staff working the truck were so friendly and attentive with the food coming out quickly given how much we ordered. I'm loving this truck!!!

Yelp
I saw this truck in Burbank around lunch time and figured I'd give it a try. I'm aware of the food truck craze (Will we look back on it as a strange fad in the 2020s?) from living in L.A. and having watched the Great Foodt Truck Race with Tyler Florence on Food Network -- so I was interested. I've been to the Border Grill restaurants in Santa Monica and Las Vegas and LOVE them. After eating at this truck, I'm ready to see other trucks. There was barely a line -- maybe two people in front of me. I was used to hearing about and seeing the Kogi Taco truck once with a line down the block and around the corner. Even though it was situated between NBC and a hospital near Disney, there wasn't much interest. The guy at the register was way too cool for school. He gave me a few "hey, man" attitudes like he was the hipster and I was just some sad sack customer. I ordered 3 tacos -- potato, avocado and chicken. I asked to package them to go which ended up meaning just cellophane over them. Guess they don't do bags. The tacos were just ok. They had tons of ingredients in them a la a Top Chef Quick Fire Challenge but there wasn't a lot of flavor in any. None of the three stood out. And they were just little mini bites I'd have as a hors d' oeurves at a cocktail party and then laugh at how messy they are. A couple bites and a taco was in my tummy. For $9, that's not a lot of food! I could get more food up the street at Poquito Mas -- and they have a kitchen without wheels. There was also a burger truck and an ice cream sandwich truck. Wish I tried those instead but perhaps I'd be just as disappointed.

Yelp
Simple. Tasty. Great new twist. Pricey! Tasted the churro tots, green corn tamal, 3 different kinds of quesadilla. $30 bucks. Yup.

Yelp
The truck was specially arranged by one of the departments to come to our building, so we all got to enjoy the convenience of trying their food w/o the lines. :) Their melt-in-your-mouth churro tots are made after you order and served piping hot. A must-try if you have the chance. I had also wanted to try their quinoa fritters but they had just run out (boo- next time!) so I had the green corn tamal instead, which was also good. A sweet, filling side but it's definitely a side instead of star of a meal. Will be adding some avocado and pairing with my dinner entree - yum!

Yelp
I LOVE pretty much everything The Border grill makes. This was my first purchase from the "truck" and I was expecting nothing less then the tasty food I had experienced several times at the restaurant. I ordered the chicken tacos with green sauce, onion and cabbage. DEEEEEELISSSSHHHHUSSSS!! They're small tortillas but dang, those tacos were packed with chicken and mmmm so yummy! Super filling finger food, great for a quick bite before a night of guzzling beer~ Kinda makin me hungry right about now ;)

Yelp
Best Food Truck in LA (Tied with Kogi) Today the Border Grill Truck came to my office and I didn't have any specific expectations. It was tough to make a decision of what to order since so many things looked good. For a specialty food truck the menu had a larger variety than others. I originally planned to order a completely different selection until I saw the great pictures of the food and other people eating in front of me. It was so hard to choose, but I went for the following: Yucatan Pork Taco w/ Guac - Really good. One of the better gourmet tacos I have ever had. Tender well seasoned marinated pulled pork, with pickled onions and orange salsa. I added guac and that was a great decision, as this was one of the better guacs I have had. Green Corn Tamal - Really good. So creamy with the right amount of sweetness Peruvian Ceviche - Amazing! I loved this. I will describe how the menu describes it and if you like those things with a big limey taste you will love it as well. Mahi Mahi, lime, ginger, aji amarillo chile, pickled onion in a corn tortilla cone. To simplify my review great food from the gourmet pricey restaurant in Santa Monica at reasonable food truck prices. Even though served out of a truck there was no loss in prep and care that was put into the food. There are still many other things on the menu I want to try. Hint Hint...come back to the MySpace office again and frequently. This review was a 4.5 rating, but I rounded up to a 5 as a comparison to food trucks and I think it deserves better than a 4. Food: 4.5 Service: 5 Variety for a Truck: 5 One suggestion. Please serve the cone items in a cup or something they can stand up on. Other than that, no complaints.

Yelp
It's pouring rain, I'm cold, wet, and hungry, but the Border Grill Truck is within sight. Yay, short line! When it's my turn to order, the conversation goes like this: Can I get the Green Corn Tamal? Oh, you're out, ok, give me the Cumin Fries. Out of that too? How about the Churro Bites? Surprise, surprise, you don't have those either. Fine, just give me an Avocado Taco. ....You're kidding, you're out of that too?? I walk away in disgust. You get a star for at least having the foresight to have a tent to shelter people from the rain. Too bad you forgot the food.

Yelp
When I got to try the Border Grill Truck, the menu was cut in half :( No Churro Tots and Avocado Tacos :( No Peruvian Ceviche Cone... Nothing that was mentioned in other reviews that I wanted to try! T_T cry! So... I got the pulled pork Taco. It was control-ably messy but pretty good, but the rice on the side had no taste what-so-ever and the black bean was dry. I don't know if I would wait in line again to get their pulled pork taco, but I definitely still want to try their Churro Tots, Avocado Tacos and Peruvian Ceviche Cone!

Yelp
The quesadillas are the stars here. Homemade tortillas and good meat and cheese (none of that low-grade Kogi cheese). I once loved the avocado tacos, but those are there no longer. The new quinoa fritters are also pretty good. Overall, I feel like this truck has a distinct lack of vegetables. There's basically no item that's even heavy on the veggies.

Yelp
The GF and I went to the Santa Anita racetrack the past weekend for the food truck festival. As we made it to the other side of the racetracks, we see over 40+ trucks brewing for business. After trying Ludo's fried chicken, we needed something clean and light to wash down the heaviness. We saw the Border Grill Truck and knowing that Mary Sue and Susan Fenniger started this truck, we knew it was the right truck to choose. Looking at the yelp reviews, I saw that most people recommended the ceviche and the green tamale so we went with that. The order literally took 1-2 minutes to come out (which is a HUGE + for the food truck business). Also the orders came out in paper cones which made handling multiple food significantly easier (another bonus point). The ceviche was surprisingly fresh and yummy. It had tiny pieces of octopus, shrimps, onions and tomatoes. It was lightly coated with lemon juice. The outer layer of the cone was wrapped with hard tortilla so you can break the pieces as you eat. Also at the bottom of the cone was bean paste which went well with the ceviche. As I looked at the green tamale, it looked more like a deconstructed tamale than a traditional tamale that would be seen inside a corn/banana leaf/husk. This too came in a paper cone and on one side of the cone was the corn breading and the other was the medley of filling such as sour cream, onions, etc. The green tamale was really the winner for me at this truck. It was moist, flavorful and most of all, it felt fresh. It didn't taste heavy like the other tamales filled with oil and meat. Overall, I had to say that out of the 4 trucks that I tried that day, this truck was by far my favorite for its light and clean taste.

Yelp
Sadly, I was pretty annoyed at the person taking orders after standing there for several minutes waiting for him to finish a number of menial tasks while completely ignoring my presence even though I was in full view. Only when a coworker called his attention to me, was I acknowledged and with an attitude. I am happy to wait, but I am not interested in being ignored or horrible customer service.
