On the Grid : Botanica

"I've lived in the 'hood for nearly 8 years and I'm so glad I signed up to do this guide because I got to go to Botanica. They've a wide variety of cocktails, supporting local vendors like Widow Jane Whiskey and Cacao Prieto Rum from next door. The atmosphere is wonderfully airy and low key, too." - Michael Ciancio

The Manhattan Bar Directory

"Botanica looks like a cross between a dive bar and the Central Perk cafe from Friends. That is not meant to be a joke - it actually does look like that: velvet couches, but also grimy floors. It’s an ideal place to gather a group, especially before 8pm, when well drinks are $4 and everything else is very cheap too." - katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg

The 13 Best Bars In Soho And Nolita - New York - The Infatuation

"Botanica is a dive, and it's the kind of place where you bring a group of friends or coworkers when all you want to do is drink something cheap in a room that gets very little natural light. There's a great Happy Hour until 7pm daily—and seeing as how everyone seems to know this, it can be hard to find a seat here." - Bryan Kim, Carlo Mantuano, Kenny Yang, Hillary Reinsberg

Where To Break Up With Someone, If You Really Can’t Do It At Your Apartment

"Botanica isn’t very classy, but neither is breaking up with someone in a bar. So to thine own self be true, or something. Yes, this place gets busy, but you probably won’t see your boss here, and when your ex departs without saying goodbye or reimbursing you for their half of the bill, you’re not going to owe a huge amount of money for your drinks." - bryan kim

Dive Bars Struggle With the Coronavirus, Social Distancing, and Takeout | Eater

"A New York bar owned by Mark Connell for 15 years that caters to a young, social crowd and has worked to modernize its space without losing its accessibility to regulars. During the pandemic the bar mostly closed but experimented with to-go cocktails accompanied by bags of chips (to comply with rules requiring food with takeout alcohol), seeing only about 7% of usual sales; those efforts were sustained in part to use up a time-sensitive PPP loan, alongside an interest-free loan from the city. The owner used a $90,000 Love Your Local grant to update the venue, balancing cheap $3 PBRs for longtime patrons with higher-end offerings like Yamazaki for $15, but remains wary of customers flouting rules, enforcement visits, and the economics of reopening until indoor seating or usable outdoor parking spots are feasible." - Nick Mancall-Bitel

Google
Very lively and busy around 7pm on a Saturday! No table service, you get up to order at the bar. Ginger Yum Yum ($12) 4/5: strong ginger kick, good flavor from rosemary infused vodka!

Sahil Kapadia

Google
Everything about this place is amazing, I selfishly wanted to rate it 1 star so no one else would find it. Amazing drinks and great vibes!

Dustin Lynch

Google
Great happy hour with beer and cocktails. Came on a Wednesday night and it wasn't overly crowded during prime time. Bar tenders are friendly and the place is big enough to hang with a group.

N B

Google
It’s small but it has good music, good and most of all cheap drinks! Great pregame spot! Got a shot and a beer for 6$ you really can’t beat that.

Laura Cardenas

Google
I just love it ! A great place , Latin music . Nice staff . Perfect to share a drink after dinner . I will go back . So much fun ! And as the slogan “don’t tell anyone about this bar” well, to late ! Definitely recommended.

Google
Great bar and good atmosphere ! Drinks are the right price for manhattan and the bartender is really nice

Google
Friendly staffs. Chill vibe and atmosphere. Good music. Tasty cocktails.

Google
10/10. Service was impeccable. Staff was as friendly as my grandmother, the manager was on point. Bar tenders gave a home town feel, being one of em was Austin Texas. #hometown

Yelp
My friend and i stumbled on this bar while trying to find happy hour spots post birthday present shopping and what a great place to find! I had quite a large space which was nice. We didn't feel cramped at all and the vibe was really chill inside. The happy hour deal was also good for the area and lasts until 7pm. The well drinks were $6 and frozen marg was 8$. Rose I believe was $6 as well if my memory serves. The bartender was helpful and quick with service. She gave me recommendations which is always appreciated.
google avatar

Yelp
Super rude, confirmed my drink was on happy hour and charged $4 more and when I asked for spicy rim was charged and additional $1 without any word but it had nothing but salt. Plus the drink was watered down and SUCKED but said nothing since it was suppose to be on HH. Guy in white tank was super rude and did not care but good hustle stealing $5 from a customer. Total rip off and ZERO customer service. Learn some manners bro
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome bar. I really loved the vibe in the back and front. We were able to get tables both times for our group. The drinks were reasonable for a cocktail and beers were a little less. I enjoyed the espresso tonic as well and the other drinks, easy drinking. Everyone working was hustling and customers were having a good time. Love that during a weekend. The DJ was playing good music. They let us bring in pizza and we enjoyed a delicious box of pizza with our drinks. Is there anything better when you're in New York City for the weekend? Will go back for sure.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Great drinks at a reasonable price for NYC. I really enjoyed the ginger drink and the lavender leo rising was fun too. The outdoor and indoor vibe is great and they have outlets all over the place for people who forget to charge their phones like me. Bar vibes inside are great even on a Tues. Outside was also popping on a Tues. Loved it!
google avatar

Angela Y.

Yelp
Really great weekday happy hour spot with great prices and great space! $2 off drafts during happy hour means a $3 narangassett, what more can you ask for (along with $6 well drinks and $8 frozen)?! And the happy hour lasts until 7pm! Also the space is huge and doesn't feel crowded at all like the lower east side bars do. Seriously the perfect place to catch up with a friend or host a large group happy hour. And a DJ was setting up as we were leaving around 8pm. Will definitely be back

Yelp
I've come here a couple of times and got the ginger yum-yum and the second time was definitely way stronger than the first. I've also tried the Frose but it wasn't my favorite. It gets pretty loud in here but drinks are a good price and a fun time if you don't mind screaming at the people you're with
google avatar

Cherie L.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting Botanica bar and I really liked it! The drinks were super affordable, around $10 per drink, and their Frose's were really good! I forgot to take pics of the drinks, but I'd recommend the frose for sure. My only complaint would be that there's 0 food on the menu, which is quite dangerous when the drinks are that affordable. I'll definitely make a note next time to eat before visiting, but overall I really liked this bar and will be coming again soon!
google avatar

Claudia R.

Yelp
Chill, low key bar that was just what I was looking for. Good beers on tap and good music.
google avatar

Alisija D.

Yelp
Amazing drinks, the vibes were immaculate with cool music and lots of dancing. The place is great for date nights as well.
google avatar

Alice D.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night after dinner and the place was pretty packed both inside and out. We ended up waiting for a party to leave ourselves in order to get seats and ordered pretty quickly. The atmosphere is very loud and the crowd was visually very young - mainly young professionals from the look of it. We had to scream in order to be heard from the other side of the table, but overall I think that the ambiance fits the vibe pretty well. I only tried their frozen drinks here and preferred the frosé to the piña colada. The latter was very heavy on the coconut flavor and was more icy for some reason while the frosé tasted a lot like rosé and was a little more melty / liquid. Either way, for $10 both drinks were pretty good. If you're looking for a place to visit for a bar crawl around the area, I think Botanica is a good spot to stop by. I can imagine it gets a lot busier as the night goes on though so maybe stop by earlier if you'd like a place to sit!
google avatar

Malisa K.

Yelp
My friends and I randomly stopped by to have some drinks while in the area. The doorman and bartenders were real chill and friendly. The drinks with great and so were the prices! They also give a discount if you use cash. Would definitely come here again if we're in the area and don't wanna spend a ridiculous amount.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Bouncer and bartenders kicked our entire party out for not ordering enough drinks WHILE WE WERE ORDERING DRNKS! spend your money elsewhere!!!!

Jami C.

Yelp
This is my favorite bar in the city. This review may seem extreme, however, as a long time customer this is the truth. THE TRUTH. Considering its convenient location in the heart of Soho, Manhattan the prices are unbeatable. The beer & shot for $6 is such a great deal it has me going out of my way on a consistent basis. The outdoor seating is unmatched with heated/air conditioned picnic tables. A New York City must, I highly recommend. Thank you Botanica. Thank you.
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
Good happy hour deals but the drinks weren't anything special and it was super loud. Not my vibe but if you're looking for somewhere that plays music and just have a good time as opposed to chatting with people you would enjoy it.

Mia L.

Yelp
Only serve drinks. But it's a great place in LES to grab a drink after work. Make sure to get there early enough to grab seats in the main room. Drinks are great. Service is great. Happy hour is my favorite.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
What a prime dining experience. The ambiance and the mixture of shitty liquor pair nicely with my growing depression... But that's for another review. What else can j say? I don't know. I am running out of words. Six out 9 stars.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Classic dive bar. Nothing to really write home about except the staff is super rude and passive aggressive. I came here twice and both times was treated very poorly. The drinks are also not anything I thought to be unique. I found them to be watered down and tasteless, the second time I came I ordered a canned beverage and was much happier with that. The ambiance is typical dive bar, complete with the very sticky seats and tables. The bathroom leaves a lot to be desired as well. It's not my vibe but if you're looking for divey bar feel with overpriced watered down drinks, staff who are hostile and unhelpful, and a younger clientele, this is the place for you. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back.

Salal A.

Yelp
somewhat young crowd, you mostly take your drinks from inside to the outdoor seating. They have a cool happy hour

Anthony J.

Yelp
The bathroom smells terrible every time, I've been here more than 5 times and it's really clear no one takes care of it. It's actually disgusting. Smells like an unshowered unclean individual had been sleeping and sh*tting in it and smearing it on the walls Also the bartenders are quite rude, but the main issue is really the bathrooms. Filthy.
google avatar

Steven K.

Yelp
That movie mean girls... I'm pretty sure it's based on the two ladies behind the counter. So rude and sophomoric. They treat the patrons like dogs and the drinks are quite lousey. This bar is a no go. Sure it's cheap.. but you ever hear of the saying "too good to be true". Yep, that's they're cheap drinks. Too good to be true.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
This place was so fun and the energy here was great. The bartenders were super nice and friendly too which is a plus. Glows: -Friendly bartenders -Decent beer selection -Happy Hour goes from 5-8 -Lively group of patrons Grows: Make more restrooms lol There was always a line - gender neutral tho so plus The place does get packed quickly as it isn't that big so keep that in mind. I'll definitely be coming back again the next time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Vaughn F.

Yelp
Cute, hip, cozy, quaint bar on Houston Street. Happy hour sees a few discounted drink options, and the beer+shot combos are decent: $6 for a 'Gansett and whiskey will kickstart any evening's revelry. When I sidled in shortly after 5 PM, the place was empty. By the time I left at 7, it was packed, raucous and loud. Most of the other patrons seemed to be in their late 20s, young professionals, enjoying their lives. It's a good scene to be a part of.
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
I did a Yelp search for craft beers, and I found Bontanica Bar. They had a good craft beer selection and a cool vibe. Meghan our server, was really cool.
google avatar

Isabella D.

Yelp
One of the last few classic dives. The only place in all 5 boroughs that you can get a $6 beer and shot. Happy to see Soho hasn't strangled one of the only affordable places to have a good time in this town.
google avatar

Esther L.

Yelp
Extremely nice atmosphere with plenty of seating. Come here before 8PM for specials. Great WiFi!
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Great stop for happy hour. It gets pretty packed in here during happy hour so be sure to get there early to grab a seat or just be okay with standing, people do tend to move in and out. Otherwise try the perfecto (mezcal, aperol, lemon juice) my favorite on the menu. Happy hour specials are great and mixed cocktails aren't too expensive. A quiet dark hideout for a drink after work...this is the spot.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
I'm sorry, did you say $5 well drinks during happy hour? In SoHo? Pinch me--I must be dreaming. This basement bar is the perfect watering hole to hit up after work. Some of the reviews describe Botanica Bar as a gross dive bar, but I disagree. It gravitates more toward a pseudo-hipster vibe: dark and industrial (with exposed brick walls, obviously) but far too clean to be divey. Hipsters have to grow up one day and become young hipster professionals in TriBeCa, I guess. Even though they might try to sneak in a cigarette between drinks and start smoking in the back room... This place starts getting packed after 7 p.m. on a weekday night, so try to get there a little earlier to claim your seats for the night.

Angela C.

Yelp
Great time great people great music. But I have to say the bathroom on the right ASSAULTED MY SENSES. This smell will haunt me for the rest of my life. Imagine the grossest gas station bathroom on a 115 degree day smell TIMES 20. And that's still not as bad. I almost fainted. I'm really not a dramatic person but that was life changing and I will have nightmares moving forward. Like I said great music and vibes though!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Elite happy hour place. You rarely get a super good deal on drinks and a good atmosphere but this place definitely does it. Try the ginger yum yum cocktail it's delicious!! I will definitely be back
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for over a year since I came back to NY. I used to come with some of my friends that used to work out here with (white) after work and never had a problem. They grab the togo drinks and not tip everytime because they were clearly getting off work and not always able to. No one ever said anything to them. When I come and sit and drink and start a tab I also always tip. The last time being a few days ago. When I come and sit with my other friend group (predominantly black) we were asked to stand because we had someone smoking and vaping. Ok no problem.Even though we've seen other people smoking/vaping in the seats and they haven't been asked to stand up or move to smoke as servers walk past them .The past few times we've come the tab has been covered by someone else so they haven't consistently been tipping (even though we've been coming during happy hour and paying the full price bc someone told me the other day they weren't doing happy hour currently) the same two drinks $22 and we get them to go and leave. The servers are super rude and I tried to explain that I wasn't the one covering the tab and legit kept arguing with me and saying comments towards me. Even started talking about me at the bottom of the steps near the door about me when I walked up and I asked the server helping me today about it and she confirmed that she was making comments about me being cheap and never tipping. Any time i've come with my original friend group and we stood around with drinks togo and done the same thing after work no one ever looked at us funny or anything no one ever said anything. I come with my predominately black friend group and they're really standing around talking about me and looking directly at me while she's talking about me when we walk up. That's mad embarrassing like they're trying to justify the fact that she was talking about me and is gonna ask me if i'm going to tip. Like you're trying to bully me into tipping after me not tipping for a few days. Besides that only the short guy and the one dark haired girl who dresses cute are the only two people who are ever nice towards us in the first place. Like y'all are mad rude we just come bc it's on the way home and it's a togo drink.
google avatar

Phan H.

Yelp
This place has a pretty cool vibe to it. It's not for the bougie or bougie people who pretends to be a peasant like the rest of us (looking at you hipsters!). The drinks are cheap and there aren't a lot of options. Just a nice place to sit, chill, have a drink, and a nice casual conversation without the stress and fear of being judged and noticed. The food options are also limited to just pizzas though. But this isn't the best place to eat something though, as the table and chairs are tiny and unstable. I had to secure my drink with my hands at all times because I was scared the table would wobble and spill it. Though the outdoor area was a bit tight, it's not a busy street/heavy foot traffic street. Come here for after work/class drinks to end the night
google avatar

Waheda I.

Yelp
Really neat bar with Happy Hour till 8pm. There were lots of outlets for you to charge your phone. I'll make a stop again if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Edwin R.

Yelp
Don't you just love a divey bar? Their bartenders here were so friendly and makes mean watermelon drops. Hmmm sooo good! Loved their DJ and the music genre had something for everyone. They have nice seating area up front, and more towards the back for large groups like us. Best of all, their drinks here were also really cheap. So order more because the more you drink, the prettier everyone gets. Cheers!
google avatar

Olivia G.

Yelp
Considering I was only there for a short time I had a blast. It's definitely a hole in the wall vibe, speakeasy. It was not very packed but just alive enough to enjoy it. The dj was excellent and interacted with the guests, the bartenders were very on top of helping there guests- there is nothing I hate more than not being acknowledged and being ignored at the bar. The ginger cocktail we ordered was so good! I would order it a million times over, I'll definitely be back with friends. The atmosphere was super chill.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
This is typically the kind of place I like, a little gross and minimal. Drinks were good- not great, but what I had a really hard time with was the smell. It smells awful in here and I had a hard time getting over it. It smells musty and like an attic or basement you haven't opened the door to in years. Service was standard. I think I might need to give this place another chance; but only if they open up their door and let in some real air. I like when bars have some grit to them- but I have to be able to breathe to drink. 2.5/5
google avatar

Blake R.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars, great cocktails and music. Good scene with less crowd and less noise able to have a conversation next to you without yelling. Will always be a go to whenever I go back and visit friends in the city
google avatar

Yelp
I had the chance to visit Botanica Bar for a friends birthday celebration this past Saturday. Located on the corner of East Houston and Mulberry, the space boasts a large seating area with plenty of tables and chairs for large parties. Since we were a group of about 15 we didn't have any trouble claiming a table in the back that was large enough to accommodate us all. Since it was Saturday night they had a live DJ playing music, who also took requests. It was pretty packed by the time we decided to leave but overall it didn't seem stuffy or uncomfortable throughout the entire time we were there. Decent drinks and cheap prices definitely should put this on the list if you're looking to find a spot in LES. The staff was friendly and efficient and the space definitely does allow you to hang out with a large group if you're looking for a bar that can accommodate that. Overall a great time!
google avatar

Jacob G.

Yelp
The atmosphere of this place is very chill; low level lighting with hints of red. Went the other night after work and got Spicy Margaritas with a co-worker. Cheap drinks for Manhattan, especially Soho. The pizza is around normal pricing for a whole pie. The service is attentive and fun. Overall 9/10. Would go here every once in a while for the drinks.
google avatar

Chelsea T.

Yelp
Came here for New Year's Eve drinks and it was a good time. Drinks were 50% off which was unheard of for NYE in New York, and everyone was given complimentary champagne for the countdown! Very divey, drinks are cheap for the area and music is live. Lights are dim and there is chatter that fills the atmosphere without being too loud (unlike some places where you can't hear anything!). The Happy Hour (6-8PM) is a great deal, with drinks under $5 mostly all day, all week.
google avatar

Claire L.

Yelp
I love this bar! The bartenders are always really friendly and they have great happy hour deals. We always come for their $4 well drinks. Their environment is great with a good crowd always coming in. Theirs a lot of seating but also enough room to stand comfortably. Definitely recommend this bar for after work drinks and weekend chill vibes.
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Cool dive around the corner from Musket Room. We had some time to kill after dinner and it was drizzling out, so we needed a bar and quick. A quick Yelp search led us here. It was pretty dead around 8-9pm, but it definitely started to get packed. Drinks were much more affordable than most places in the city. Shots! Shots! Shots! The bartender was also so chill. Seemed more like locals vibe, which I appreciated! 59/365
google avatar

Tomas R.

Yelp
Swung by Botanic Bar for a quick HH drink to take advantage of their wine specials. Opted for their house rosé which was actually really good. It's a cool little spot to hang out with some friends and enjoy an interim drink while you're on the go. Pretty easy grabbing a drink and chill staff here. Solid spot!
google avatar

Mythili M.

Yelp
This bar has great happy hour deals, from 6-8, but unfortunately no food, which I wish I'd known before going in. However, I noticed a few people bring in food with them and eat so that's at least an option. It's just a hop, skip and a jump from the F and D lines. Inside feels a little dark and dinghy. There is also no table service so we had to order and pay at the bar. At around 6:30 PM, it started to get really rowdy so this is not a place I would suggest to meet for a nice chat over some drinks--we were basically shouting to hear each other over the ruckus.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
A great happy hour find in a neighborhood you wouldn't expect it in. The crowd is a little hipster-ish but you can't beat $4 drinks, $3-$5 beers and $5 wines from 6-8pm seven nights a week. The space is subterranean and no-frills but is spruced up a bit by some candles. Not crowded at all the Saturday less than a week before Thanksgiving and lots of stools, benches and banquet seating to spread out on. If you're looking for an unpretentious downtown happy hour you wouldn't be ashamed to take a 3rd or 4th date to -- this is a contender.
google avatar

Gale V.

Yelp
this is a popping neighborhood bar that i frequent. have never had an issue with security or staff. great to meet friends or dates to pregame as the drinks are so cheap. gets packed but ppl respect boundaries. can't go wrong with $3 beers. i will say that the last time i went, they closed the other room. not sure if that's permanent. it's a no frills bar and i will continue to be a loyal patron as ling as they stay open.
google avatar

Hadassah B.

Yelp
I guess I didn't read the reviews properly. I came here assuming that I could order food and drinks. Unfortunately, they don't serve food. The patron sitting next to me informed me that they allow customers to have food delivered there. This is a pretty decent dive bar. No frills or anything like that. The prices are reasonable considering that you are in the city. Great place to get HH drinks.

Arturo M.

Yelp
Manhattan in Manhattan! Love the outdoor covid seating. I think it should be permanent. Enjoy a drink, watch New Yorkers honk and road rage, people watch and relax!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Basic. Just a bar. Drinks are OK - definitely nothing special but slightly above your average dive bar watered down cranberry vodkas. I had the ginger drink and my BF had something with mezcal & aperol. Neither were worth the $$. Interior is pretty cute.
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
Normally, when I have a really bad experience I like to reach out to management first as one never knows what is going on and I prefer to give someone the benefit of the doubt. HOWEVER, after being "served" by two of the surliest women who call themselves bartenders, I highly doubt there is any form of management at this place. A true shame, as I used to go here frequently when the drinks and DJ's were fantastic, and the staff was actually friendly. Not only did the indifferent blonde in a giant onesie fail to make eye contact or even try to convey any semblance of a welcome, she served up a ginger concoction that would be better put to use as toilet cleanser. It was so astringent I felt my pH changing after one sip. The brunette was no better, and there they were, leaning against the bar and talking to one another with their nonchalant monotones, while my friend and I tried in vain to figure out how it was possible to make such undrinkable cocktails. I've been to more uplifting funerals. Bye, bye, Botanica! You are off the hit list.
google avatar

Diana C.

Yelp
Me and my fiancé went there and the setting was very nice but the waitress was so rude. I heard an Irish accent from when she spoke and I excitedly said "omg you're from Ireland so is my fiancé" she looked at him happily and said "nice what is your last name" he told her his last name and for the rest of the night she was a complete disaster to us. We've never experienced something like this and it ducked because it was a night where we finally didn't have the kids.
