Bouillon Chartier - Review - 9th Arr. - Paris - The Infatuation

"The 19th-century dining room at Bouillon Chartier is flat-out impressive, thanks to the golden hat racks floating above the banquettes and quicker-than-light servers scribbling orders on the paper tablecloths. Here you can get a perfectly fine three-course meal for €10—just about enough to make up for the interminable lines and service that borders on downright unpleasant. If you do wind up at Chartier, here’s the plan: Join the queue no later than 6:30pm, and say oui to the €1 sangria or vin chaud during your half-hour wait. Once you’re inside, order the garlicky snails and pot au feu, a stewed beef dish that’s been on the menu longer than Paris has had a métro, before finishing with the house special profiterole coated in sticky chocolate sauce." - Emily Monaco

Bouillon Chartier - Gastro Obscura

"Around the turn of the 20th century, Parisian restaurateurs created a new genre of restaurant, one that emphasized inexpensive French cuisine in pleasant surroundings. The restaurants were called bouillons, a term that can roughly be translated as soup kitchens, but that boasted decadent, often Art Nouveau-inspired interiors that stand in stark contrast to this name. More than a century later, a handful of Paris’s original bouillons still exist, and have even inspired a contemporary spin-off. Perhaps the most famous example of the genre is Bouillon Chartier. Opened in 1896 in a former train station, despite claiming to have served more than 50 million meals, it doesn’t appear to have changed much since opening day. Upon arriving, you’ll be politely but rapidly guided to a table that you’ll almost certainly share with other diners. Dishes—classic French fare such as celery remoulade, calf head in Gribiche sauce, roast chicken and French fries—are shockingly inexpensive by Paris standards (some menu items cost as little as 1 euro), and arrive likewise fast. When finished, your bill is calculated by hand on your paper tablecloth. Know Before You Go Bouillon Chartier does not take reservations. Lines can be long, but the efficient service means that they tend to move briskly." - bn4vbjcmzz, Austin Bush

It serves some French cuisine. The food is delicious, but moderately flavorful. The snails and sauce are especially delicious. It's a bit of a value-for-money restaurant. There's usually a line, but it moves very quickly. It takes 15-20 minutes to get there. However, the glasses, forks, and water jugs they bring are usually dirty. There are issues with cleanliness. I hope the food is made in a sanitary environment. I've been there 4-5 times, but it's always been dirty. The waiters are a bit arrogant. When I point out a dirty glass, they look at me as if to ask what I can do, force me to bring a new one, or even make me throw it on the table and leave. But when the bill is finally brought, they expect a tip. I had to go out of necessity, but I wouldn't recommend it until the cleaning regulations improve.

The best dishes were duck confit and braised beef, would highlight recommend these!! Prawn with mayonnaise was below average, as it is not very fresh. Salmon was also below average as it’s quite bland. Sangria was nice and refreshing! Would recommend it as well! For dessert, chocolate moose is thick and chocolatey! Would recommend it too! It would be even nicer if the dessert are colder. Waiter was very fun and hospitable in his service! Excellent!

We went for dinner with friends. We arrived at 6:30 PM, so we didn't have to wait in line, but there was a long line when we left. As for the food, since it's a value-for-money establishment, don't expect too much in terms of taste or size. This is a place where you can feel like a French family dining experience, so we recommend it. Also, don't hesitate to get the daily menu and wine, because there are people waiting outside. :)

We went there for lunch and, although there was a queue when we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by how fast everything moved — we had a table within 10 minutes! The place is cozy and welcoming, and the service is quick and efficient. We tried the salmon and the beef bourguignon — both were flavorful and well-cooked. The presentation could be a bit more refined, but the taste made up for it. We also shared a bottle of Merlot, which turned out to be a great value for the price. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely a nice spot for a good, relaxed lunch!

The restaurant has a huge queue, but it moves very quickly. I had the beef bourguignon with pasta and mushrooms, and for starters, a tomato salad and a mixed green salad. The beef was very good. The pasta was not, it was overcooked and tasteless. The mushrooms were terrible, they were canned. The starter salads were good and tasted fresh. Overall not bad for the price

After a long wait outside, we finally got inside and were impressed by the size of the place. It was bustling with people both inside and out, which added to the lively atmosphere. I really liked that the menu is printed fresh every day, so it changes regularly. The waiter was very friendly, and I loved the unique idea of him writing our order directly on the table. We started with escargot (snails), which was amazing—I even ordered a second round! For the main courses, we had beef bouguignon, duck served with baby potatoes, and a plate of French cheeses. The food was delicious, especially the escargot, which I highly recommend. The duck was a bit tricky to cut, but overall very tasty, and the beef bouguignon was excellent. I also enjoyed the house wine; it really made the experience feel authentically French. Food: 8/10 Place: 9/10 Service: 10/10 A fantastic dining experience—would definitely come back!

We had dinner at Bouillon Chartier yesterday, and it was absolutely delicious! I especially loved my main dish—the saucisse with mashed potatoes. The mash tasted just like grandma used to make: warm, buttery, and comforting. For dessert, I had the Rum Baba, which was rich, flavorful, and a perfect way to end the meal. The restaurant itself is steeped in history, with a charming old-world atmosphere that makes the experience even more special. And the prices? Surprisingly affordable for Paris! Highly recommended for anyone looking for traditional French food in a unique and authentic setting.

Google
Very good French food at reasonable prices. Great environment and service. The only down side is the long line to get in. For me, it wouldn't be special enough to wait 45 min+ to eat there. Luckily, my friend and I arrived a bit before they opened so we didn't have to wait long.

Yelp
Don't set your expectations too high, I liked this restaurant for the location, the look, and the helpful services but my meal was ok, the order my GF got she really enjoyed. A friend recommended this place to us, on a Tuesday for lunch there was a pretty big line but since we were a party of two we were seated in about 15 minutes at another table right next/with a party of four. I appreciate based on how busy it was that they find ways to maximize seating so people can get in and out. We were pretty hungry so finding a place where we didn't have to put in a reservation or wait over an hour was perfect for me. Our server was very helpful with our questions, and everything came out fast and just as we ordered it.

Yelp
Waited almost an hour on a Wednesday evening with my party of 3. My expectations were pretty high given the long line and over 21,000 reviews on Google. Very nice spacious interior. Service is quick. I ordered the steak with pepper sauce and fries. The steak wasn't that tender and the fries were nothing special and a bit bland. I also wish the pepper sauce was more flavorful. We also got green beans for the table. They tasted like the soggy cafeteria food type so we weren't the biggest fans. Prices were good but personally don't think it was worth the wait and food quality.

Yelp
I was recommended this place from some friends and family who told me that this was a beautiful place where we could try some traditional French food at an affordable price. We waited in line for about one hour which I don't mind because I was excited for the experience. Me and my two friends were seated at a table for 4 and everything started out just fine. The waitress seemed busy but reasonably friendly. There were restrooms to use located downstairs(not clean and writing on the wall but hey,it's Paris). I started off my meal with a vegetable soup which was bland but only 1 Euro so I can't complain. For our main dish we all decided to have the traditional beef bourguignon(8 Euro). This dish was awful. Each piece of meat was inedible because it was pure fat and not the kind that melts in your mouth, but the kind that you could chew for days. We didn't complain though, we just ate the macaroni noodles on the side. For dessert we all got loads of ice cream and rice pudding. Now it was time for the check. THIS IS WHERE THINGS TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORST: We asked our waitress if we could please get a split check. I did not think it was a big deal as I'd done it before at other locations and it was never a problem. Our waiter rolled her eyes at us and told us to figure out how much each of us owed. We didn't mind figuring it out so we asked for a menu so we could add up what each of us owed. The menu never arrived after 5 minutes, so we asked again for a menu. This is when the waiter turned hostile. She frantically began throwing our things all around the table including my phone and other belongings. All the while she was screaming at us in French. Only one person at our table spoke French so he was translating what she was saying. She said they have thousands of people to serve and we were causing a problem for her by asking for a split check. The whole restaurant was looking at this commotion unfold. My face was red and I was in shock at the way she was acting. Now after yelling at us, she says to figure out the amount we each owe already. She was saying that she doesn't have time for this nonsense. Yet she still hadn't brought a menu and kept slamming her hand on the table to signify that it's written on the table. However, none of us could read what she had wrote. Now she sends a new waitress over who also begins yelling at us, this time in English. Telling us that "they don't split checks here and it's our job to pay each other back when we leave". Which is FINE, but just say that next time and don't scream at us and throw my belongings around the table like some wild animal. Anyway, we end up finally paying and they charge us 5 euros too much because the calculation is wrong and we never received a menu so we basically had to just guess what we owed. Us being too scared to say anything at this point, we just accept the loss and move on. We were shakin up for hours after this altercation and still (a day later) can't believe it. I'm not sure the waitress's name but she was waitress #3. I will never ever be back or recommend this place to anyone. Which I guess they don't care and know that they can treat anyone horrible because people will still show up and it will be crowded. This place is terribly overhyped and the way they treat people is disgusting. Save yourself some time and humiliation by going somewhere else. It was my one and only horrible experience in France.

Yelp
No frills food at one of the oldest restaurants in Paris with French cuisine and really good prices. You can't make reservations so you have to queue. We got there pretty early on a Sunday so the wait was maybe 10 minutes. But as we were leaving around 9 the line was very long. The place is extremely busy and packed. If you're two people you even may be seated with other people. The servers are also not the friendliest and pretty short but I guess that's understandable considering the volume. At the same time service was a bit slow if you needed to order an additional item. The building is truly unique with an old time feel to it. The menu had various dishes popular with different regions around France. For the price it was definitely cheaper than any other restaurant I've been to on this trip. The food came out quickly and despite the diner vibe the quality was pretty good. We ordered the escargots, the Camembert, calf head, beef bourginon, sausage, and the ice cream profiteroles with a bottle of wine. Everything was delicious and we left completely stuffed!

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying beef bourguignon and French onion soup for my first meal in Paris but sadly it was not on the menu. Still we dined and ordered the following: sangria, vegetable soup, veal stew, calf's head, buttered fresh green beans, mushrooms and soft white cheese. My partner and I came at 6:05pm on a Thursday and were immediately seated at a table for 4. Soon after another couple joined our table. They were strangers. The restaurant is big but they fill up every seat as much as possible. I wonder if you came as a single diner if you will be seated with 3 strangers? Seating felt very cramped. They have a rack above your table so you can store your bags or purses there because there's no room to place it next to you or behind you. We placed our order at 6:18pm and each table received complimentary baguette and water. Your order is written on the table followed by your bill when it's requested. Our food started to arrive at 6:25pm. This is speedy service. The food felt like home cooked food. However it was so tasteless. Sadly my favorite items were the baguette, sangria and the mushrooms. The vegetable soup was simply lentil soup. Bland. The "buttered" green beans were over cooked, were bland and all I tasted was garlic. The texture reminded me of canned green beans. The veal dish and calf's head dishes, also were bland. I added some salt but it didn't help. The most flavor was in the gribiche sauce from the calf's head dish which reminded of an aioli. The calf's head was very tender and the veal could be a bit more tender. $34 for the entire meal is a bargain but I'll gladly pay more for flavor. We didn't finish our mains. The men's bathroom stunk. By 7:05pm there was a long line.

Yelp
If you hear about Paris, someone will tell you about this place. And it does not disappoint. When you get there, expect a 25-30 min line. The Maître d' will ask you how many and get you seated in some very tight tables. The food is traditional French cuisine. I recommend the beef Bourguignon. Or the duck confit As a vegetarian option is spaghetti. The pastors are very bland and lacking spice. Th meal for the value is amazing. A party of 4 will cost under 60 euros. And the character of this old establishment is really amazing - looks like it did from the 1950s.

Yelp
Bouillion is French version of a diner. The food is cheap and comfort so don't expect the fancy stuff. This place reminds me of Katz Delicatessen in NYC. I think Boullion is a stable for the French and one must try at least once. Expect the line to be super long and during dining hours it can be up to 1 hour of wait. We went there around dinner time around 8 and when we came out the line is definitely shorter.

Yelp
We heard about this restaurant from tik tok and we were very excited to try it, when we there we were seated after waiting for a while. The server lady threw the menu on the table, we tried to ask for an English one but she got upset and didn't want to listen. Later she came back to take our order we told her we needed the English menu we don't know what to order yet. She went grabbed the English menu and said something in French and left. We left the restaurant without trying the food. Very bad experience

Yelp
Chartier or Bouillon Chartier is a noteworthy restaurant anyone visiting Paris should experience. It has a long history going back to the late nineteenth century. The restaurant was priced cheap for poor workers and perhaps even nominal/free for the indigent. Someone would have to fact check the latter. Nevertheless, this was a place where one could get a cheap and filling meal largely based on stews and soups, hence the bouillon in the name. Over the years everyone wanted in on a good thing and the audience spread to a wide range of patrons, which is how you come to know Chartier and well established on the tourist map. It's a popular place and there is almost always a line waiting with someone triaging the cue to see how many are in your party and where you can be seated in the dining area comprising many long tables where you will be served family style. Tip: If you see the line extending out to the sidewalk, understand the line starts well inside under the arch to the right and into a courtyard to the door. So the line is longer than it looks from the street. The experience inside the restaurant is similar to that found at Durgin Park at Faneuil Hall in Boston, now closed. So do not expect the waitstaff to be overly friendly or patient. Ask for the menu in English to be more decisive. The interior is well worn in places and the woodwork reflects the long history. I have eaten here back in the late 80s or 90s as well as 2002 before Yelp existed. I don't recall what I ate the first time (it might have been the beef bourguignon everyone raves), but I had steak tartare the second time. It was served with a poached egg on top with the small baguette and the red wine I ordered, but it was not as impressive as what I ate the first time. This was the only time I had steak tartare, so it was a bit venturesome for my palate at the time. I like my steak medium rare and I like sushi, but their version of steak tartare was not as good as other things on the menu. I do not think the steak tartare is on the menu today. Despite my experience with steak tartare, the experience is worth the visit and the fact I returned a second time is an indicator Chartier is return worthy; though, Paris is filled with cafes and brasserie and extraordinary restaurants that may keep you from returning to Chartier. The waiter will write your bill on the paper "tablecloth" upon finishing your meal. Your bill will strike you as a great value in keeping with its history and in contrast to what you'll pay elsewhere. It may be on the tourist maps, but Parisiens and French folks will frequent Chartier and recognize a good value. This is not a sit and linger spot where you can enjoy a relaxed conversation afterwards. Pay up and go is what you do. It's a busy place, but still a four star experience.

Yelp
We came to the Chartier on a Thursday night to celebrate my birthday. Got here around 8:15 pm, and even though the line was long, it was moving quickly and we got seated by 8:35 pm. Tried coming back again on the weekend, and we ended up going somewhere else, because the line wasn't moving at all. So, really it's all about timing it right to get in here. I loved the lively ambiance of the Chartier "Bouillon" (an economic restaurant for workers since 1896). Today, it's listed as a historic monument, has 320 place settings, and very reasonable prices. My husband and I ended up splitting a pitcher of sangria, which was delicious. For our dinner entrees, we ordered the beef stroganoff with rice and steak frites. Our meals were delicious and more than filling. And if you don't speak much French like us, then be sure to ask for the English menu.

Yelp
This place was really close to our hotel, only a five minute walk. When we would pass by, there was always a line, and it was always popping. The last night in Paris, we wanted to try (what I assume to be) an "authentic" French restaurant that was nearby. Thankfully, when we went around 5:30/6PM on a Friday, there actually wasn't a wait. The first thing they give is bread, which was cold, hard, and chewy, but it's free. I think. Lol. The escargot was actually the highlight of what we ordered. It was the first time some people tried escargot, and everyone enjoyed it. I ordered a steak with pepper sauce and fries. The steak itself was a bit chewy, but I think the dish was less than $20, so not complaining. The pepper sauce was really good. If there wasn't pepper sauce, probably wouldn't be good. The fries were solid. I'd be shocked if they somehow messed up fries. My boyfriend ordered the beef bourguignon, which he didn't like that much. It also wasn't super filling for him. We went to a McDonald's after, but maybe we're just fat Americans with no portion control.

Yelp
Affordable French food representative Chartier has a history of more than 120 years, in 1896, this store was born from a simple idea: to provide a veritable meal at moderate prices, respect for customers to win their loyalty, fifty million meals and only four owners later, this recipe is still as good as ever! The environment is really the same as the city of Versailles, France, many people will sit together at lunch, the feeling is very wonderful, we were seated after a Brazilian boy and an Indian, can chat together especially interesting Thin slices of pork snout 3.8 euros - the appetizer of thin slices of pork snout is very tasty, very thinly sliced, there is no fishy taste, but because of the crispy bones and seasoning makes people feel very appetizing 6 snails 7.5 Euros - French baked snails are usually made with cooked snail meat, with a sufficient amount of butter, garlic and parsley, with the meal package is very fragrant, but if the Chinese chef to do the garlic may be more flavorful hahahaha Saucisse au couteau from aveyron is inside the set menu, but the dish becomes Traditional beef bourguignon, but it is also a famous French dish, tender beef in a rich red wine gravy, plus vegetables, making beef bourguignon one of the most popular French recipes in the world! Tripe a la mode de caen, steamed potato - a typical Caen-style tripes tripe dish from Lower Normandy dating back to the late Middle Ages, cooked with spices, onions and garlic, fresh bouquet garni - and delicious vegetables such as leeks, celery and carrots, this dish is very much in line with the Chinese stomach, but personally I think it's still a bit fishy to handle. Nice softness The stewed apple in the final set is very ordinary, just a mixture of apple puree, sugar, butter, cinnamon and some lemon juice, not good at all, you can order it alone!

Yelp
Stooped for convenient French food "your grandmother would make" as recommended by our domicile host. We had the escargot, which were delicious and the thin sliced pig snout, which reminded me of luncheon meat. Tried the snout for something French. For entree I had the roast pork loin in "charcuterie sauce" which came with petite elbow macaroni. I ordered the mushrooms also and were quite surprised when they came in a tomato sauce. I tried one but couldn't eat them as there was no seasoning and tasted like the poured a can of tomato sauce in a pan and added the mushrooms, with no seasoning. The pork was wonderful, and not dried out and the generous servings. You are sat with other parties if you are one or two. There is always a wait to get in and felt rushed to get out.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a weekday. If you don't want to wait in line you have to come before noon or you'll be waiting in line for a long time. The inside is very charming. It looks like it was a former bank or post office. If you're a part two you will likely be sharing a table with another couple as they try to accommodate as many people as possible. That means sharing water, bread, butter, etc. Now for the food. It seems as though the menu changes daily as it has today's date. We ordered the pork terrine, escargot, boeuf bourguignon and steak frites. All the food was pretty underwhelming. The escargot could have used more seasoning. The boeuf bourguignon seemed like a normal beef stew and the sauce was watery instead of being thick and rich. The steak was tough and the fries were soggy with no flavor. The best part of the meal was the ice cream dessert that we ordered. It was in a choux pastry and covered with chocolate and nuts. Overall, I think it's worth a try since the prices are so reasonable and they have a lot of French classics. I just don't think it's worth waiting in a long line for it. So if you want to try it go early and set expectations.

Yelp
For dessert, the baba a rhum for about 4 euros was more like a savarin...dry on the inside but there was plenty of rum syrup that was quite strong. I had the profiterole chartier for 4.90 euros swimming in a chocolate sauce with good ice cream inside iso of whip cream. Our server, Yarrick, was AWESOME...totally wonderful with his service. He was efficient, helpful, and very patient. When I read some other TA reviews of the poor service by some of the servers, we were quite apprehensive, but Yarrick was a STAR in our books! Since they add up all the dishes manually on the table, it is best to double check with the l'addition. For us, there was a discrepancy of about 3 euros but our server, Yarrick, was very quick to rectify that and to confirm that our addition was correct. We waited no more than 5 minutes at 5pm to enter the resto and by the time we left, there was a long line up but it was moving at a good pace. For the 3 of us....6 escargots, 1 side mushroom, 3 pig trotters, 1 tete de veau, 1 bottle of bordeaux, 1 profiterole, and 1 rhum a baba came to 83.60 euros.

Yelp
This just wasn't good at all. I don't know how this is one of the most reviewed places in Paris but I was severely disappointed. The beef bourguignon featured very poor cuts of meat that were fatty and stringy. My partner had the vegetarian spaghetti and she said it tasted like the French have yet to discover how to use seasonings.

Yelp
This spot advertises French classics at very affordable prices, and that's certainly true. My friend and I were able to try a number of dishes without breaking the bank. We enjoyed some cheese, escargot, avocado with shrimp salad, steak and fries, and a veal dish for about 40 euros. The escargot and avocado dishes were pretty tasty, but both of our main dishes were disappointing. The steak was extremely over cooked and the fries were unseasoned. The veal dish had very little meat in it and was served with whole boiled potatoes. Plus, we were seated in the very corner of the dining room so it was difficult to flag down our waiter to get our next courses and then the check later on. Unfortunately, I wish had chosen to pay the extra euros for a better dining experience.

Yelp
Sorry not sorry. I'm a good cook and this place was a recommended so I was excited. The place is lovely but that's where it stopped. I ordered the fish and chips because I heard it was good. I'm from a fish town - it looked and tasted like it came from a box I didn't finish it. My other guests - steak way undercooked - it HAD to be sent back. Waiter came back with the same steak which now looked like a hockey puck. Guess the chef was pissed. The waiter could have cared less and seemed uninterested. She couldn't eat her meal. Paid the bill with no adjustments. Was glad to leave. I've had good food in Paris - just not here. And when you have no "skin in the game" it shows. And on that note we went to a family owned restaurant and it was amazing. Do better you have Olympics coming up!

Yelp
Was recommended here by a local. Would I go back? Probably not. The good: - Escargot? Yes please! Nothing wrong with it, tasty and was a good experience for my first time. - Well cooked. The duck was basically fall-off-the-bone and beef was tender and soft. The pasta texture was I guess how I like it. Soft. Lol. Same with the potatoes. - We got a bottle of white wine for 13 euros. And it was good! That just doesn't happen in America, so a total win for me! The bad: - I can't tell if seasoning is supposed to be a thing. Everything was relatively bland, the taste profiles across each plate about the same. It would've been a bad meal if not for everything being tender. - Dessert was VERY rummy. Personal preference. - My stomach said "nope" during the meal. Had to zoom to the bathroom and find a stall with TP.(not all of them did). First and only time that happened to me on my trip.

Yelp
Good food for the price! Quite inexpensive place for dinner that gets very very busy around the typical dinner time in Paris (7:30-9:30). We went around this time and the line was wrapped around the building, so we came back the next evening for an early dinner (around 4:30-5) and there was no wait at all. The waiter was funny and attentive, and the inside was very pretty. As we ate, the dining room filled up and got more lively. Highly recommend the escargot and the steak with pepper sauce (heads up - it is cooked quite rare/medium rare even if you order otherwise). It was around $75 USD for three to eat (three entrees, two appetizers, a side, sangria, and wine).

Is it overly hyped? Yes. But even if the steak is a bit small and the wait a bit long, I think it's worth a trip. The prices are of course great and the atmosphere is genuinely Parisian and lively. I had sides: oeufs mayonnaise, vegetable soup (butternut squash), salad with frisée and lots of lardons and a very fresh, tangy vinaigrette, and a side of Pont l'Évêque cheese. My son had steak in peppercorn sauce. He says the steak was overcooked and small. The service was very bright and friendly. As a duo, my son and I were seated at the same table as a couple on a date, so if you are the shy type take note. If you have a choice between Chartier and Bouillon Julien, go to Julien -- they take reservations, the food is similar, and the décor at Julien is more beautiful. I got there at 6:30 and waited around 20-25 minutes, not bad at all.

Yelp
We were recommended to come here by our friend when we told them that we wanted a place that screams "french." The design is very old school and they have all the classics. For appetizer we got the boiled eggs, escargot, and avocado. For the mains, we did the steak and fries, pig trotter, and the assorted meat place. Lastly for dessert we did the rum baba and cream profiteroles. As you may have noticed, the prices are pretty reasonable.. rather cheap for Paris therefore you can't expect much from the quality. With an hour queue, I got my hopes up but the meat was very very tough. My favorites of the night were the escargot and cream profiteroles. The cream profiteroles was covered in decadent chocolate and was filled with ice cream, definitely redeemed this two star establishment to a three.

Yelp
Food was great and prices were even better. We were sat in between two other couples (they fully maximize the space) which seemed awkward at first but soon had great discussion! We ended up having a wonderful night. Food came out super quick and was delicious! We ate here twice during our stay in Paris since it was so close to the hotel and highly recommend.

Yelp
Very beautiful restaurant. Feels very French. Though prepare for a long line. The servers serve you quickly and even make a bit of a show when they hand you you're food. It may be hard to hear with all the noise. I got the escargot and the sauce was very good! The Brie would have been nice if it was melted a bit but still good.

Yelp
I don't get it, I really don't. My French friend wanted to bring me here but the line was too long, so I came back myself another night while she was out of town. It was starting to fill up fast around 6pm and I figured I'd best prepare for an awesome meal. Couldn't have been more wrong. I was seated at a 4 person table, as a solo diner. There was a couple already there, and I ended up next to them and across from another solo traveler. Not at a community table made for different parties mind you, at a normal 4 person table you'd normally only see 1 party at. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Then my waiter came to take my order approximately 30 seconds after I was seated. I told him I'd need some time to look over the menu. He came back 1 minute later (this is not an exaggeration by the way, I had just gotten through the wine list only), and would not accept me telling him I needed more time still, he just wouldn't leave. I asked for his recommendation and he rudely told me he doesn't know what I eat, so I said I eat meat or anything else, and he pointed to something on the menu and took it before I could see what I was getting. I asked what wine he'd recommend and he told me my only option was the small bottle of white for 1 person, I guess I'd be screwed if I had wanted a different kind and was okay ordering a full bottle? The food came about 3 minutes later. It was beef on a skewer with some kind of oily green sauce, and French fries. The meat was incredibly dry and chewy and the sauce tasteless. The fries had no flavor. When he asked if I wanted dessert and I said no, he looked shocked. I didn't want to risk trying something and having it be awful too, and waste a good dessert moment in Paris. I walked to get an eclair down the street. I left about 15 minutes after I had arrived, it was clear they wanted to rush people through and get them out asap. With the line, I kind of get it. But it made for an awful dining experience. You couldn't pay me to come back here.

Yelp
Service was excellent! Our waiter was very attentive and quick. This was our first stop to eat in Paris and enjoyed the food at the classic Bouillon Chartier. Don't get your hopes up for the food, it was average. It's just fast and something to try when you are in Paris. Escargot was okay, (I've had better at other restaurants in Paris). I did enjoy the veal. I wish I could remake the sauce back at home. Remember to arrive early to bypass the line outside. We went right before open just to avoid the crowd.

Yelp
I heard there was supposed to be a long line here, so we visited relatively early in the evening (maybe 6 pm?) and there was no wait. The food was generally good and pretty affordable. I got snails, sausage, and steak. This was my first time trying snails and they're not bad. I'm not sure if I would get it again though. The taste is unique and a slight bit too salty for me. This was also my first time trying this kind of sausage, and it was fine. I'm not sure I would try it again. The steak was ok, but definitely helped by the sauce. The sausage and steak both came with fries which were also good, but nothing special. The service was quite efficient even as the restaurant filled up. There were no problems with speaking English at all. In terms of value, I think this is a great place to go. The quality isn't the best, but I think is well above average for the price.

Yelp
Why do people not like this place? It's not a tourist trap as some of the reviewers claim, ordinary French people eat here. It is reminiscent of a diner because it has a simple menu and the food comes out fast, and is accessible to a lot of people. Is the food top tier quality? Definitely not but that is reflected in their affordable prices. We enjoyed our meal, yes we were seated next to a random French teenage couple but it also meant we didn't have to wait as long. The snails were delicious and the beef bourginon with pasta was tasty, my steak with fries could have been better but it still hit the spot. You can order an appetizer, drink, main dish, and dessert without hurting your wallet and it'll probably be fewer than 30 euros. It's not going to be the best meal you have in Paris but it's certainly better than a bad bistro.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Price was very affordable. Best bang for your buck in Paris. We went around 11pm, no wait! Our server was amazing. Ordered escargots for the first time. Very deliciously buttery and garlicky. It was served with bread on the side. Perfect combo. Ordered the highly recommended steak and frites with peppercorn sauce. Fries were overcooked and steak was not the best cut but the flavor was there + very filling. You get what you pay for! Still deserves 5 stars

Yelp
Best service I've ever had! The waiter writes ticket on paper table cloth, brings out food (precooked) so fast, you sit next to strangers, and you're outta there before you know! Awesome experience--great place to try the basic French dishes (eggs and mayo, escargot, roasted chicken, sausages, and steak!)

Yelp
Well don't go for the food. Go for the great atmosphere, wonderful old building, elderly waiters writing your order on the paper table cloth. Go for the prices - plentiful food, quite inexpensive. Our friends who live in France part time love this place. Come often. But are not foodies. At all.

Yelp
Definitely not up to the hype During our meal, the pigs snout was pretty good, but when our mains came out, they were not as good as I thought they would be the prices were affordable put the meat was tough and fatty. I think the restaurant was decent, but I would not go back when I tried to call over one waiter. I didn't finish my sentence, but he just left, which was kind of weird. Overall the restaurant was just not up to the hype. I hope this helps those who are thinking of going.

Yelp
I had to follow the hype. Boy was I disappointed. 1 you have to get there super early or else you will be waiting in line for an eternity. 2 the menu is varied and pretty affordable. I got 12 escargots and they were medium sized and very tasty. The butcher choice with fries that I ordered had the best pepper sauce I've tasted in a long time. The meat was a bit chewy and my fries were cold. I had also the salad which was delicious and so crisp just yummm My friends had the vegetable soup and it was cold it's not gaspacho. My friend had the flounder, she said the taste was very good when she found some meat. It was a anorexic fish . The pork with lentils was ok, and the avocado with shrimp, as well as the vegetarian spaghetti was very tasty and good. I ordered the chestnut with whipped cream Mont Blanc heavenly delight. Our waiter David #15 was very funny, prompt and on top of things. Will I be back? Probably not. But I had to try one of the oldest institutions

Yelp
Pretty packed during lunch. There is English menu available and server can speak English. Casual settings, we saw people just hopped off from bus and off train station and see there with bag packs and luggages. The profiterole dessert was the highlight for our meal. You can tell this is an old fashion restaurant when you see the waiter wrote your orders and hand-calculated the bill on the table paper cloth, you they do take your credit card though.

Yelp
This place is old school. Simple deliciously prepared French food. The inside is large and every bit a bustling French dinner spot. The service is fast and lovely. I started the meal with the prawns and mayonnaise and it's not shrimp and Hellmans-I could've eaten 3 helpings of that stuff it was so good. My main was the beef stew--the beef was so tender and delicious! I finished the meal off with some soft cheese (I've never had anything like it, the consistency of a Greek yogurt but the taste of mild cheese) sprinkled some sugar on it and just amazing!!

Erik M.

Yelp
Wow! I don't post many reviews, but this place was so remarkably bad, I think it's my duty to warn. It's cheap...that is the most positive thing I have to say. Poor service, meh "food", and uninteresting atmosphere wraps up this place. They were out of the dish I wanted, which is ok. Instead they bought a tough piece of beef part with no knife sharp enough to do more than tear it apart. There is a McDonalds not too far away. You will be better off there.

Yelp
Why 3 stars for one of the worst meals I've had in Paris instead of 1 or 2? That's because Chartier isn't about the quality, it's about affordable cafeteria style pre-prepared food that comes out quick. Setting your expectations before you get here will help you enjoy Bouillon Chartier for what it is rather than what it isn't.

Yelp
Great no-frills, budget-friendly meal! There are no reservations so be prepared to wait in a fairly long line to get inside. The place is bustling and extremely lively once you get in. We shared 6 snails which were delicious and each got steak frites. Don't expect this to be the best cut of steak in your life, but it was really great for the price and the peppercorn sauce was delicious. You should come here for the lively ambiance and the affordable food!

Yelp
We came here based on a recommendation from our airbnb host and we saw it had historic/popular feedback. It was by far the most disappointing meal we have had in our five weeks throughout Europe - much less Paris. The waiters were over-worked and it felt like a bother to ask for anything, and extremely unfriendly - which I would be too if I worked there. Luckily we have had some excellent meals throughout Paris to set a high standard, and this was just gross on so many levels. The food was flavorless, tough to chew, and made us feel sick after the fact. We tried the escargo which was probably the most decent out of everything but even that was lackluster. Tried their eggs which was literally a spoonful of sad mayo and a hard boiled egg that gave me depression when I looked at it. We have ordered this many times before and its always decent presentation and delicious flavor from other places in Paris. The worst of all though was our main dish which was steak, fries, with chimichurri sauce (the recommended meal by the restaurant). When I think about it, it makes me feel sick. It was beyond greasy, meat was impossible to chew, and had no flavor. Even the fries were shite. The only saving grace was the ice cream we had was good. So disappointing and I write this just trying to warn first time visitors to not let this be their first taste of Paris. So many better options and service. I haven't ate at their other locations so I hope the other ones are deserving of their popularity. BLECH!

Yelp
Absolutely love it here. Every time I come to Paris this is a go to. The place is definitely no frills. The staff is funny and friendly and they make great recommendations. We got the terrine, escargot and green beans. For our mains we had steak and chicken and chips. It was definitely a great experience

Yelp
Overall: - Super affordable price (budget friendly restaurant) - Great food - Friendly staff We went there on Sep 24th, 2022 and we ordered the following items: Snails: 12 snails for 15 EUR. What can you ask more? It's actually herb garlic butter baked snails - Great taste, I wish that they would have added more of the herb garlic butter (I kept dipping my bread on the herb garlic butter :) ) Butcher's cut with pepper sauce, fries (13.20 EUR): Great piece of meat, I believe it's a rib eye steak. Unbelievable price for a steak! The pepper sauce is really good, wish they could added more of the sauce. Prunes in wine with vanilla ice cream (3.90 EUR): great dessert, well-balanced flavor. Ice cream puff, hot chocolate (4.50 EUR): Pretty good and the hot chocolate is actually dark chocolate. Definitely a place to return! Beware the place gets full pretty quickly, you might to go there early. Although, the queue for 2 people went pretty fast!

Yelp
Cheapest place you'll find, food is alright but we really went just for the interior decor! It can be extremely busy but we didn't have to wait to get seated, no reservations needed. Definitely recommending to go at least once!

Yelp
Incredible value and ambiance for a real French food experience in Paris. Highly recommended. Jeremy our service is attentive.

Yelp
Pork curry should be called pork fat curry. Wait staff rushed us terribly. The only thing on the menu that looked good was the chicken they were out of. Only choice for me pork bf had spaghetti didn't eat it all which was wild he's a very big eater. Would Definitely recommend somewhere else.

Yelp
Prices are right, but the food left me wanting. My steak was tough and was barely able to be cut with the knife. The wine, Ma Grappe, tasted like water. The prawns were small. They looked like regular shrimp. This restaurant came highly recommended but it did not live up to its reputation. I gave it three stars because the price was reasonable.

Yelp
I see the appeal of this place. You can get dinner for 2 without drinks for maybe 20-25 Euro. You get decent portions and the food isn't bad. It's not great, but not bad. The waiters are faster than any restaurant you will eat at in Paris. They don't rush you out, but they bring that check like it's an American restaurant. It is a large restaurant but with tables on top of each other. You may be a group of 5 or 7 sitting at a table sized for one fewer. You may be a couple sitting in between two other couples with adjoining tables and sharing a carafe of water. If that's what you are looking for, go for it. Our green salad was lettuce with a vinaigrette. Nothing else. Ordered some sort of beef with a white sauce. Came on a plate with a little rice. They forgot my green beans that I ordered and took them off at the end. I couldn't tell if they had forgotten because everything came piecemeal. There will be a long line to get in for dinner If this sounds like your thing, go for it. I wouldn't go again.

Yelp
OK. This is **NOT** a fancy meal. With that in mind and knowing that the price is very reasonable, then you can enjoy the ambience and the food. :-) We got steak frites (one with peppercorn sauce), boeuf bourguignon and escargot. None are excellent but all are decent. You get what you pay for. Ambience - this is a old dining room and it brings you back in time with certain yesteryear's atmosphere. Will I come back? Well, there are much better food in Paris. Maybe I come back and enjoy the dining hall. ;-) Is Bouillon Chartier worth waiting for an hour to get it. Definitely not. (We got in with no waiting.)

Yelp
Very traditional French food, waiters are sweethearts, food comes out in literal seconds and we had maybe a 5 minute wait to be seated. The baked fish was AMAZING and the beef bourgeoisie (I think that's how it's spelled?) was also very good. Green beans were a lil hard but good in taste. Yes, some of the other food is not that great (carrots w vinaigrette, mushrooms) It's fast and casual though and such a great little experience. Jesse our waiter was the best and took such good care of us

Yelp
This is an exceptional dining experience, especially for the price point. It's possibly the cheapest, classiest place I've ever been. I mean, I drank wine out of a paper cup waiting in line to get in. Nothing about the food was that special but it was all delicious. Cheap cuts of meat prepared well with excellent sauces. The waiters are funny and kind (especially for foreigners). And the environment is beautiful, packed, and entertaining in itself. Loved it.

Yelp
You get what you pay for. The food is subpar. Busy. Noisy. I questioned the cleanliness of the utensils and plates. I would describe it as French food in a dim sum style Chinese restaurant. I wouldn't come here ever again.
