The Restaurant Is a Celebration of Queerness, Sex, and Food - Eater

"Opened by Marcel Boulestin in May 1925, this restaurant became a chic and popular dining spot in London, known for its association with the Bloomsbury set and a notably queer crowd. It was a central hub for gourmet dining and queer community-building in the early 20th century." - Rachel Cleves

London’s Oldest Restaurants Like Sweetings Put History on the Menu - Eater London

"Boulestin’s name has a history dating to 1927, when French anglophile X.Marcel Boulestin (variously bon viveur, chef, food writer, and first ever TV chef) opened the founding establishment in Covent Garden. Restaurateur Joel Kissin has attempted to revive Boulestin’s ethos in the current site, opened 2013, even going so far as to use the original Boulestin’s cookbooks for inspiration, and trying to replicate the hospitality the founder was known for. He was an experimental chef, too, known for enjoying Irish and Indian food, so expect more than French classics on the menu here." - Tom Ford

Boulestin Review - St. James's - London - The Infatuation

"If Boulestin was a person, he or she would be born and bred in Paris. They would be slightly older than you, more cultured than you, they would dress impeccably, and would make you feel slightly uncomfortable in your ‘slobby’ clothes. They would sit in this restaurant’s excellent, slightly secret courtyard area, light a cigarette, and cross their legs. They would order a glass, soon to be bottle, of rosé. They would not question the fact it’s ten thirty in the morning. photo credit: Boulestin" - Jake Missing

Disappointed by the food. The staff wasn't particularly nice or welcoming. We ordered some steak tartares, they were ok but don't expect them to be prepared in front of you. The fries were industrial and no way to get toasts. The place itself is beautiful and has a lovely terrace outside!

It is bright, beautiful and delicious. The soothing ambience in the afternoons is very enjoyable after the noisy day. We enjoyed our early dinner and I got a wonderful surprise for my birthday.

Fine dining in a superb location. Courtyard seating with last remaining gas lamps in London, you can easily imagine being there 100 years ago.

Great setting when you walk in. Atmosphere a bit bland and there is some tables avail outside. Good wine list. Food was good, served nicely and was enjoyable. I wouldn't say it was exquisite cuisine but ingredients were good. I had the cod, slightly different presentation and way it was cooked but was fine. Slightly expensive but worth the experience as you won't be disappointed.

I used to love visiting here when I lived down south, recently returned and found out that there were new owners from the last time I visited. Reluctantly I decided to give it a go as I thought not too much could have changed since the old staff kept their jobs. Oh I was wrong. French onion soup, a classic that can't go wrong. The appearance of the dish was abysmal. Dirty dish water mixed with a bucket of grease, the aroma was worse the onions were clearly past their best and even drowning them in an oil/dishwater solution couldn't save them. I complained and they sent for the owner as he was present at the time, after about 10 minutes of sitting there not eating and feeling rather uncomfortable as others were looking, a man introduced himself as "Mr Anderson, the owner here" I can only tell you what I thought was soup Mr Anderson clearly thought it was a bath tub. Hair and skin had more grease than my meal. All in all, avoid it. You'd get better quality food and better service at the nearest Gregg's.

We went there for my birthday today. We were the only ones in there. There were a few issues. The waiter kept spilling the wine while topping up our glass. The starters were delicious. We ordered 2 mains with a side of mash potatoes. They didn't have any of the mains so we ordered other mains. They brought us the food with a side of spinach, probably cause the replacement mains had a side of potatoes included. The desert came we nibbled a little bit and we found a piece of gold wrapper inside it. We showed it to the waiter, and he laughed. We went to pay and we payed full price. they took out the desert and the extra side we didn't order. Anyway wouldn't recommend.

The main things this restaurant have going for it are its location and the interior decor, which is pleasant. Unfortunately that wasn't matched by the rest of our dining experience. The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived, so I was disappointed with the long wait for our food. I ordered the Wild Sea Bass with mash. The sea bass was full of flavour, but definitely on the small side for the price. However, the mash was much too lumpy for my liking. I was also disappointed by the various additional service charges, which it transpires are not passed on to staff. Taking care of staff should be central to any business, particularly for a restaurant such as this one that is on the expensive side.

What a great establishment; I have just had the most perfect business breakfast at Boulestin. The food and refreshments were first class and the the whole atmosphere set the tone for a most successful meeting. A massive thanks to the staff who were both attentive and discrete. A first rate experience and I will be back. And a massive thank you to the team. James Johnston, owner Transcend Change Ltd.
