Nestled in the Ferry Building, Boulette’s Larder serves up exquisite brunches and light lunches in a cozy, kitchen-like café, perfect for indulging in local favorites.
"Boulette's Larder does one thing, and it does it damn well: classy breakfast. It's a cozy little nook, nestled on the sunny side of the Ferry Building, that serves up pastries and egg dishes. And that's it. While many restaurants try to be all things to all people, we applaud Boulette's for its relentless lack of expansion over the past decade. (Okay, so they finally did open up another place next door, but still.) The dining room also houses the kitchen, and the shiny hanging copper pots and remarkably relaxed cooks create a comfortable vibe. It's the kind of place that's perfect to bring your mom for breakfast, which is exactly what I did. Such a good son. If you go before lunchtime, your food options will be limited. But that's okay, because they will be limited to deliciousness. We recommend something egg-based, because this is the kind of place that turns out omelettes that seem like they might levitate off your plate and float away. In other words, they are light and airy and a little bit buttery—everything an egg dish should be. Throw a canele and some toast on your order. I guarantee you will be happy. So will your mom. Food Rundown Canele A sugary cylinder shell around an sweet eggy goo center—the idealized version of a canele. Is it my favorite pastry in the world? No. But they're a crowd pleaser. Toast Good bread, good toppings. We recommend the nocciolata (fancy nutella). Don't sleep on the jam, though. Poached eggs It's hard to predict what will come with your eggs - ours have had a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern slant. Always good, though. Scrambled Eggs Some elevated scrambled egg game. I have no idea how these are whipped up to such a degree of lightness, but I have a feeling it should not be attempted at home. Get 'em. Salads What is a larder? A home repository for pig fat. Point being, the salads are good, but I recommend sticking with the protein and fat-enhanced carbohydrate options." - Max Child
"If you work in FiDi, you may need to meet up with important clients or coworkers for breakfast, and when that’s the case you should head to Boulette’s Larder. It’s technically not in FiDi (it’s close by in the Ferry Building), and looks like a French billionaire’s breakfast nook. They also make some of the best breakfast in the city, like omelets and scrambled eggs that are so light, Nike should consider putting them in their running shoes." - will kamensky
"As he commonly does on Somebody Feed Phil, host Phil Rosenthal tagged in a famous chef — in this case, Alice Waters — to show him around her favorite places during the show’s San Francisco episode. And while it’s perhaps no surprise that she would pick the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market for her segment, she did also show him a favorite restaurant, Boulettes Larder, where they have breakfast together ahead of the farmer’s market tour." - Dianne de Guzman
"Amaryll Schwertner of Boulettes Larder has been mastering this dessert for almost two decades. Boulettes Larder is a longstanding fixture in the Ferry Building, serving market-driven brunches and snacks, including some of the finest canelés in the city." - Becky Duffett
"If you feel comfortable sitting down with a cafe au lait and canelé from Boulette’s Larder, of all the outdoor dining options in the city, it seems like a well managed space." - Becky Duffett
