18 Atlanta Restaurants and Pop-Ups Worth the Splurge for a Special Occasion

"Diners would be remiss to underestimate Chris McCord and Alex Sher’s underground supper club, located inside Hop City West End. As low-key as the space and operation feel, the team behind Bovino After Dark clearly knows what it’s doing, and even a night with a few members missing hums smoothly. Standout courses include the opener, a low country chawanmushi that’s a crab-heavy, savory spectacle, and the ricotta and mushroom-stuffed crystal dumpling served in a broth offering ripples of Parmesan and pesto. Don’t miss out on the caviar intermezzo, a sweet and savory addition balancing notes from ingredients like sesame ice cream, miso-sherry sauce, and beet foam. The experience seats 10-12 people, making it difficult to snatch up a reservation on weekends, so stay tuned to Bovino After Dark’s Instagram feed to track cancellations. $65 per person. Wine pairings and caviar optional for an additional charge. Reservations required." - Beth McKibben, Sarra Sedghi

Food was very tasty and inventive. The flavor combinations were interesting but worked so well. The staff was also incredible - very friendly, funny. They explained everything we were eating in details and were quick to provide service. The space was fine, tucked away in the back corner. But it didn’t take away from the experience at all.

Google
I have not experienced the after dark dinner yet but the happy hour has been a hit! Wonderful staff that’s very attentive and makes you feel at home. A beautiful display of culinary excellence and skill! Talk about a show! The food has been great! Great concept with great prices for what you get. Myself and partner are definitely repeating customers and we intend on continuing this!! Can’t wait for summer so we can come by even more! ❤️

Google
This is a great dining experience. Lots of creativity and artistry in the composition and presentation of the dishes. Michael was a wonderful guide throughout the service and Chef John Henry explaining dishes and overseeing everything made it very special. Beautiful execution throughout. If you like cutting edge combinations, presentation, and excellent execution, check out Bovinao After Dark. Our dinners was 2/22/25. Cheers

Google
Loved the food. The chefs were fun, friendly, talented and inventive and enthusiastic. The vibe was great and overall an amazing experience. The only downside was it was a bit chilly. I’m definitely going back!

Google
Everything about our evening was a delight. The service was friendly (funny) and laid back, but at the same time incredibly well executed and thoughtful. The dishes were unique, delicious, and beautiful. The intermezzo was confusing but wonderful and such a fun experience of different flavors. Despite being in a pretty public bar, this ~15 seat bar, omakase experience feels very intimate, which is attributed to the warm atmosphere created by the attentive chefs and servers (who clearly love what they do and believe in the experience they’re curating). Absolutely recommend and will be back many more times.

Google
Bovino After Dark is nothing short of magical. With only 16 seats, this intimate dining experience feels more like a private dinner party than a restaurant, and it delivers on every front: creativity, flavor, and exceptional service. Having dined here twice with friends, I can confidently say Bovino After Dark redefines what a memorable meal should be. Each course is a masterpiece, crafted with an artistic flair that showcases the chef’s unparalleled talent and innovation. The menu is a journey of unexpected flavors, where every bite surprises and delights. The service is equally impeccable. The staff anticipates your every need, providing thoughtful touches that elevate the evening into something truly special. Their knowledge of the menu and wine pairings enhances the experience, making you feel cared for without ever being intrusive. For anyone seeking a one-of-a-kind culinary adventure, Bovino After Dark is an absolute must. It’s the kind of place where memories are made, and every visit leaves you dreaming of the next.

Google
Bovino After Dark is an excellent dining experience. It is the most underrated tasting menu in Atlanta. I’ve been three times and the tasting menu is always creative, thoughtful and delicious. The atmosphere is intimate and laid back and while you’re waiting for your dishes you’re able to clearly see the chefs working on their creations. So you get a bonus behind the scenes look at a well run, high caliber kitchen in motion.

Yelp
Amazing food and wonderful service! The oysters were out of this world and each course was more creative than the last.

Yelp
Let's dig in, I wish you could give 3.5 stars. I love and understand the concept here and can see the vision. However, I believe a few things can be tweaked. The seating is a L shaped bar, and we happened to be sitting at the connecting parts. In sitting at the connecting parts there's a large pole that blocks your entire view of the staff, so your only view is the pole. No one should have to sit there and ruin the experience. 1/5 All of the dishes had multiple components. In a course dinner the menu should build and be cohesive. I felt like the items didn't build, more so like every dish wanted to be the star. I also felt the majority of the food was cooked in advanced and was very lukewarm. The chicken wellington out of all the dishes was a 1/5. I would rate the remaining dishes in order rice noodle, beef confetti, fig cake, shrimp/crab cake, chicken wellington. The surprise dish was surprisingly good 3.5/5 but the caviar was undetectable. The staff were amazing! They seem to have an enthusiasm for explaining each dish, making sure you enjoyed the meal, explaining the idea behind the dish, and where the food was sourced locally. The service was good as well. We had to ask a few times for new silverware and based off our sitting, if you didn't walk all the way outside of the bar, it felt like they were reaching/stretching & gently tossing the silverware on the napkin (politely). Would I recommend this place, for sure. I would go back when there's open sitting for brunch and try them again.

Yelp
Their dinner may be good but their brunch leaves much to be desired. I wasn't very impressed. Service was friendly but our server kept forgetting our order or forgetting to get what we asked for, despite us being one of two tables there. We had about a dozen oysters (~$3 each), shrimp cocktail, fried frog legs. The shrimp was $15 for 5... basically $3 each. I thought it was quite expensive for what you get. While the oysters were fresh, they were very small. Compared to what you get at places at optimist during happy hour, the value wasn't there. Frog leg was a bit dry and too chewy. They tried to be creative with this dish but I didn't think it hit home. I'd give it a try again for dinner some time but based on this brunch experience I don't know if I'd recommend

Yelp
Immersive and top-tier culinary experience. From the thoughtful menu curation to the wacky caviar bumps, it's clear that every step of the five course dinner is crafted with intention and expertise, with flavor profiles ranging from exotic to cozy. Taylor and Nathaniel took great care of us, and it was awesome to meet the chefs and see their creative process first hand. Don't sleep on Bovino After Dark, it's a real Atlanta gem!

Yelp
Just an absolutely top-notch dining experience that I'd recommend to anyone looking for something different, fun, and adventurous. You have to be ready for anything because you pay in advance for your experience here, and the menu is always pre-fixe. You don't get to make many choices. But don't worry, everything they serve is amazing. I tried to capture the experience in photos, but to sum it up, you are seated at a bar facing the exposed kitchen (which is in the corner of Hop City's bar). So you get to watch each dish as chefs prepare it for you. They do two seatings each night (6 and 8pm), and you can either do wine pairings or order drinks from the Hop City bar. On the night we went, the courses were (very fancy versions of) deconstructed ramen soup, fried green tomatoes with mussels in an amazing peanut sauce, duck confit, beef and broccoli, and an incredible dessert of creme brulee with coffee ice cream. You could add additional courses like oysters (we didn't) or habanero ice cream with caviar (we did - it was savory and so interesting). The service was impeccable - they described every dish to you. We had an amazing time, and this is such a fun place for a special occasion!

Yelp
A MUST VISIT! Amazing service and amazing food. Steal of a price for the quality you get. Going to come back for brunch!!

Yelp
After visiting here, I feel like I need to remove stars for every other restaurant I have reviewed. This is the best tasting menus I've ever had. I could make this a super long review, but instead, I'll make it a TL;DR. Miller Union? Gun Show? Both great restaurants. Two of their chefs are now the brains behind Bovino After Dark and they will not disappoint. Farm to table? Yes. Creative? Yes. You'll be blown away with the plates they put together and with the service they provide. This is a super intimate setting, a chef's counter. You're sitting at an open table that sits against the actual kitchen. You watch every single dish be prepared, cooked, and plated. Every week the dishes change and they are using what's in season. Five courses are $65. I would honestly spend over $100 for the quality and quantity of each dish. Location is in the back corner of Hop City. Plenty of free parking. Right on the BeltLine. I still can't believe this place is so close to my house. The best restaurant in Atlanta!

Yelp
I am shocked by some of the low reviews. This is a spectacular, intimate experience of interesting food at a great price. It was great to interact with the Chefs and made the whole experience delightful. It was a unique experience and I will be going and taking friends back. It always makes me wonder if some people just look for ways to critical. I would give them a higher rating if I could. DO THIS if you are a foodie. You will not regret it.

Yelp
Got a last minute seat and came here alone. They promise innovation, and they definitely delivered. This is the level of creativity I expect from a Michelin star restaurant. Everything was delicious. I wasn't looking forward to the turducken bc I don't like duck, but even that was tasty. The "Arby's roast beef" was my favorite. The dumpling on top was so crave-able! The add-ons did add up to an additional $150 so it ended up being much more expensive than I thought. I would have appreciated a menu with prices for the extras. In their defense, neither I nor the people around me asked what things cost. Will likely be back! Definitely will keep watching their Instagram to see the menus.

Yelp
An incredible gem of a restaurant. Run don't walk before everyone finds out about it. I've been to a few of the best tasting menus around and this place does not disappoint. The dishes are insanely unique and deliciously creative. I almost don't want to leave a review because I know I'll never get a reservation but this crew deserves it...they are amazing! Apologies on not naming these dishes or having more pics...I ate them too fast to remember

Yelp
The meal was exciting Bovino's After Dark is more than just a restaurant; it's a culinary adventure that celebrates the art of dining. It stands out not only for its food but also for the experience it offers. Whether it's a date night, a celebration, or a casual evening with friends, Bovino's ensures a memorable time. It's a testament to Atlanta's diverse and thriving culinary scene, and a must-visit for anyone looking to satiate their taste buds with something uniquely delightful. Throughout the meal, each course is served with a brief explanation, ensuring that guests fully appreciate the ingredients and the effort that went into their preparation. The experience is not just about the food but also about the story behind each dish and the enjoyment of watching skilled professionals at work. It's an immersive dining experience that appeals to food enthusiasts and those looking for a unique culinary adventure. The wine pairing is recommended.

Yelp
Reviewing now for the great customer service BEFORE our dinner next month. I booked and paid for an upcoming birthday dinner, but made a simple mistake and booked for the wrong evening (Friday instead of Saturday) through the Resy app. Resy doesn't make it easy to modify reservations, but the team at Bovino immediately addressed my error, fixing the reservation and then ensuring I wasn't double-charged. Thank you Alex and team!! Looking forward to leaving another review AFTER our birthday dinner in February!

Yelp
Really fun concept and delicious food. So creative and great to watch them craft your food right in front of you. All the staff were very friendly, and you feel that you are just having a meal in someone's kitchen. The flavors were so unique. I can definitely say I have never had anything like it before. Habanero ice cream and caviar - sounds nuts but tasty. And for what you get, the price is very reasonable. I will be back to explore what they concoct next.

Yelp
Went to celebrate our daughter's birthday and the food was absolutely incredible. Watching Chef Chris and his team was amazing, the wine expertise on the wine pairings beyond perfect. A culinary experience that exceeded our expectations and our daughter's friends are already planning to reserve their dates. Definitely a must do in Atlanta. Thanks y'all for a great evening!

Michelle L.

Yelp
I applaud their efforts for trying to provide a different experience for us foodies out there. The setup was nice - counter seats right in front of the kitchen and the staff and chefs were super friendly. Complete 5 star service. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing... although visually appealing, the taste of all entrees were mundane, bland and served at room temperature. The wine pairing left a lot to be desired with four 3.5 ounce pours of mediocre wine for an additional $79 (maybe it was $59, can't remember). The only thing that was good was the desserts but the "special" dessert cost an additional $30. So after the cost of the meal, wine pairing add-on, special dessert, water (they charge for a sparkling water) and tip - it was more than $200/person. Perhaps we went on a bad menu night so maybe other menus will be better but there are many other places to get tastier dinners for $200. ps. if you list food allergies in your resy reservation, be sure to confirm they saw it. when we asked them, it was clear they were unaware - not sure if it's an issue with resy providing them the info or their lack of attention to it but best to confirm with them.

Yelp
A great mix of different spices and a creative way of presenting the food. The ambience was great and the servers did a good job relaying the message behind the dish.

Yelp
Best meal I've had in Atlanta, hands down. I keep thinking about it and its been a week. Every dish sounds like it shouldn't work but it always works. We're going again soon and will continue going until they start charging 3x-5x more because that's what the market value is for this quality food. It was so good that the lady next to us left two bites on one of her plates and we were still talking about it two days later. I don't pay attention to other people's plates normally but we couldn't imagine leaving a bite behind. If they gave you a private area to eat in then I would've licked my plate.

Megan L.

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences I've had in Atlanta! The food was delicious, the staff was very attentive, and the vibes are perfect. Will 100% be back! This is an amazing find. You won't regret!

Yelp
I went to this restaurant a couple weeks ago and was very excited about the opportunity to try something different. You have to commit and pay for the meal ahead of time even if the menu hasn't come out yet but I figured...hey let me take a risk. So here's my pros and cons list: Pros: -The vibe is cool. It's in a space that has another bar as well as a liquor store in there so that's different. -I love watching chefs cook just to see them in their element so sitting at the bar watching them work was fun to do. The seating was comfortable which I was worried about because the seats in the photos didn't have backs to them but they've upgraded since then. -Our host, Nathaniel, was extremely friendly and attentive -There were some interesting flavors on some of the dishes and the dessert for the most part was pretty good Cons: -Dinner was supposed to start at 6 but they didn't serve us anything to eat until about 6:40. There should be something ready for us to snack or nibble on while we watch the chef cook -The meal overall lacked cohesiveness and seemed like some random things they thought about making instead of trying to build flavors as you go along which is what is supposed to happen with a fixed menu. It lacked fresh notes and acidity to break up the flavors so everything felt a bit one note. -The upsell is REAL. It's like Spirit Airlines in there. From the moment you sit down everything is an upsell and you don't know how much anything is unless you constantly ask them how much extra that's going to cost you. Water, wine pairing (which was some very cheap wine), caviar bump, "special dessert" -Oh and at the end they said "don't worry about leaving a review, we don't know how to read them". I thought that was pretty interesting so I figured I would write a review. I love the concept and think in time they will get it together and fix some bumps but they are not there yet. The menu definitely needs to be more refined and it doesn't have to be with more expensive ingredients.
