On the Grid : Bread & Salt

"Technically sitting in Logan Heights, Bread & Salt is an art enthusiast’s attraction that’s a stones throw away from Barrio Logan. It sits in a beautiful old industrial building, with touches of modern renovations in the parts I’ve seen, including murals decorating parts of the exterior. There is a cluster of people that speak high praise about this gallery / event / studio / artist residency space, but I have yet to witness it in it’s full capacity. Only way to find out what’s going on is on their Facebook page, or through the KPBS and Reader websites." - Product Etc.

A sprawling Logan Heights arts campus in a former bakery with galleries, residencies, and partner spaces. Covered by KPBS and San Diego Magazine, it’s central to Barrio Art Crawl and cross-border contemporary art conversations.

I love this place. Bread & Salt Art Gallery turns into an Improv Musical Jam session on Tuesday nights. A very HOMEY feeling with very friendly performers & patrons. Come for the art in the day and the music at night. It's worth a visit to get your jam groove on. NO COVER. They have a bar with food as well. Reasonable prices.

Yelp
It's an art gallery, but also a venue that can be rented out for a space to do several events. I went after hours for a indie film thingy, I would say it was very unorganized, they said door opening at 6 PM, but they let people wait in line to get photographer took pictures for marketing purposes. The catering company also there to serve people food, but then they made people buy their own stuffs and put all the free food away for themselves, we never heard of the food again. Show started at 7:30 PM, they just made people hanging out in the lobby, only a certain amount, the rest still have to wait outside in the cold, no food were served what so ever, the catering company put out the food, then the organizer boxed them and promised it will be ready for everyone after the show. Then the problem with seatings, they really don't know how to seat people, so they randomly picked people and put them to whatever seats available, then everyone else had to stand in the back the entire time. Finally the technical issue, sound and video went out of sync, camera and microphone didn't work half of the time. I understand this is low budget indie blah blah blah, but you really wasted everyone time, and you didn't get your act together. You should have done sound check and rehearsed. By the time they couldn't figure out how to fix the problem, they just let the rest of the show went on, then apologized. There was no free food, and if you wanted to buy food, the catering truck also gone. Really Bread & Salt, you need to allow more quality events to be in your venue. Please!

Yelp
Very interesting place. We attended a fantastic play here over the Labor Day weekend. It was charming and rustic, maybe they were still working on certain areas. Parking was a little dicey and there was no AC but it certainly has a lot of potential

Yelp
When you visit Bread and Salt it's important to understand what it is. It's a former Weber Bread Bakery which has been convertible to an art, artists, collective, home, showcase, gallery. Visit it and try to describe it and then reread and you'll get it. Not really describable but it is absolutely worth your time. Come and see!

Yelp
I came to Bread and Salt for an event that I was invited to by a local artist. I had no expectations when I showed up though I was confused as to the real intent of this establishment then other for events. In one room there was music being played though it was a bit loud with people talking you could not hear what the music was. Off past the clear roll up doors was a dirt floor what seemed to be an indoor patio with a pretty chill feel. I think this place has a lot of potential in the art realm- I would love to revisit this place and learn more about it.

Yelp
This is an odd venue - for an art gallery and social events. My only time here was for the opening night of the San Diego Latino Film Festival and access to the building was limited areas being used (plus the upstairs restrooms). With the exception of the art gallery, much of the interior walls and flooring seem "unfinished" - with some large areas still just dirt - but it is a fairly large venue able to accommodate a wide variety of events such as the one I attended - that included catered food and a band for dancing. The neighborhood is mainly residential and parking is mainly on the street but there is also a lot in back.

Yelp
Talk about a cool, secretive art collaboration! I have to say I love the name as well. What used to be an old bottling warehouse, I believe, is now blooming with artistict talent in Logan Heights right near the Coronado Bridge. I have been lucky enough to walk through an art exhibit and also watch a wild performance by Tribal Baroque, street performers who have made a name for themselves in Baloba Park. There is no doubt that Bread & Salt is slowly becoming an oasis for art, quenching the thirst of locals who might have thought the scene 'dried up". This place has unlimited potential and they have only begun to start renovating it! If you have a passion for the arts and want to see a place well connected with the scene, definitely stop on by and see what they have to offer. I guarantee that you will see something memorable that will challenge you in a creative way.

Yelp
Pretty cool venue in Barrio Logan. I attended an art show of my friends here and I was liking the vibe. It's a little short on parking and the entrance is a little dangerous if you step wrong, but I liked the variety of the spaces and how unique it was. I heard it was the old Wonder Bread factory, not sure if that is true or not. The gallery my friend was showing in was called the 'Not and Exit' gallery... and the entry way to it looks like... well, an exit! :) They allowed wine in the gallery so I can just imagine the possibilities for future events to be possibly held here... I took a few pictures that you can see linked to this review.

Yelp
This location was beautiful! The event I went to here was very open. I Could see the industrial yet classy feel for an event at this location!

Yelp
Barrio Logan/Sherman Heights is always a nest of surprises. One of those is Bread and Salt, the bread factory that has known two families of entrepreneurs in the dough business and currently is a design hub for architects, artists of all kinds and designers. I went to their open house this Friday and the red neon lights with Salt and Bread seen from different sides was very retro looking. The night was offering a view of cotton candy clouds that totally matched with these neon and the yellow facade and turquoise door made me think I was in some Caribbean location and not in San Diego. Coffee was freely served by Cafe Motto, what a pleasant surprised! I loved the exhibitions and exploring the old factory and checking the silos (and some music experiment going on there with water and metal containers). I had the opportunity to chat with some artists and everybody was very friendly and open. I am very happy to find out about Bread and Salt and looking forward many exhibitions and events there, as its is a very spacious venue that can serve to multiple purposes.

Yelp
This place is magical. Just what I was looking for. Artist run and expanding the idea of art. High caliber work and highly entertaining. If you are lucky I hope you get to try the Sardine Bar :)

Yelp
Been to a couple of shows here now and I can't wait for the next. Bread & Salt is an awesome space, albeit a trek from North County. Totally worth the drive though, as you're sure to see something that makes you think. The focus is on SD based artists who are making challenging work, and there's a lot of it. The experimental music performances I saw the last time I attended were stellar. They also have an artist residency program that actually provides space to SD artists for the best reason: to devote time to developing great work that makes San Diego's culture that much richer.

Yelp
Cool space not far from Chicano Park. A coworker recommended I check out this cool art gallery/space and I am glad I did. The next time I am in San Diego I will have to see what is showing -- "Invisible" was showing when I was in town and the drawings were beautiful in the space.
