The Best Bagels in New York City

"This East Williamsburg spot can’t decide if it wants to be a bodega or a bagel bakery. Luckily, the bagels are damn good in all the usual permutations, which are alternated, so that the selection on any given day may be limited to six. This will help you make a decision. The lox and scallion cream cheese are a particular delight, while the everything pumpernickel offers a bagel-world oddity, even if it’s a little sweet." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

Google
What a bagel. There's no skimping on portions here and everything I had was fresh and tasted great. Yeah, the service is a bit rough around the edges compared to what I've experienced in the U.S. so far...but I kind of like it. Reminds me of home. But in all seriousness, go here. You'll be glad you did

Google
Got a salad here through Seamless, absolute joke ! So distasteful, they didn’t put half the things in that I requested . The protein I added in was boiled eggs it was grey And oldish looking and there was barely any. I selected whole wheat bagel and they sent a regular one without updating me . All going straight into the garbage what a waste of time and money. When I called they couldn’t care less how they messed up.

Google
My friend took me to her local bagel shop in Brooklyn. I have never in my life had something so savory on bread. The jalapeno bacon cream cheese FTW!!

Yaakov Bressler

Google
No nonsense bagel shop - where real new yorkers go to get a bagel (in a rush)

Scissorhands Barbershop

Google
Fresh bagels and ingredients that’s why the five stars but the service is unorganized and slow . If they wear a little more organized check out will be faster ! But overall amazing place

Shirley Chiang

Google
They have some cream cheese and salad options for bagels. I purchased a French toast bagel with vegetables tofu cream cheese. And a buffalo chicken salad with onion bagel. It cost $7.xx

Google
This is the best breakfast sandwich shop I’ve found. This is also the only bagel place I’ve found that has Asiago bagels in the time I’ve lived here- and I’ve been hunting. The staff are actually very friendly. The food is of the highest quality. This is the SPOT. Their cheese selection alone is beyond impressive. The entire place is just quality quality quality and DELICIOUS and fresh and just wow. No wonder they’re always busy! They also have fresh pastries that aren’t just bought from a box like so many other places around here!

Google
My ride or die spot since 2016. Used to stop by regularly when I lived closer. It’s no frills but with the quality of Ess-a-bagel or Tal bagels (sans the tourist lines). Lately I order half a dozen bagels for delivery, slice them and freeze them. It makes every morning so enjoyable. My favourite are the pumpernickel bagels. But now I’m seeing it has closed! I hope it’s only temporary… please please, come back!

Yelp
Reliable spot for breakfast. We order here almost every weekend and they rarely disappoint. Just recently we ordered for delivery. My daughter had the flat bagel with cream cheese, my husband had the 1 egg on a bagel with cheese and sausage. They have the option to add a side of extra protein which he likes to do when he can't deicde between bacon or sausage. I had a pumpernickel bagel with tofu cream cheese and cucumbers. They have a great assortment of bagels and spreads which I Love since I like to change it up often. I also like the sandwiches they offer.

Yelp
tasty spot for a bagel! Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. I had the scallion cream cheese on an everything bagel. $6.50 not sure if that's considered a good price for NYC. I ordered online and picked it up, the staff person who helped me was nice.
google avatar

Phil H.

Yelp
Sure, the service was a bit unfeeling and robotic but I didn't care. The bagels were good, fluffy, coated well, and tasty. Plus, the amount of cream cheese spreads here were off the chain. If I'm ever back in these parts I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I got the apple cinnamon cream cheese on a regular bagel. FIRE. Could not recommend this enough.

Vince B.

Yelp
I had a French toast bagel with two eggs it was very good. But the service was ok I will return though

Yelp
God i had given this place 4 stars but after today? 1. so disorganized. people are so mean and rude. I have beef with the lady behind the counter now because her attitude is disgusting and everyone in general has a nasty ass attitude. the place is a horrible mess. they don't know who got what and then paying is a mission on itself. The food is fine, only reason why i even gave it a chance. Stay away unless you want to be mistreated. Peace out and be better.

Yelp
Wait but I really like this place. My bf and I were just trying to find a place for breakfast where the food sounded good. We just kinda stumbled into this place and instantly were like ok we can find something here. There are SO many options. It was kinda overwhelming for both of us. So I just went with my ol trust baconeggncheese on a roll. Delicious. Don't remember what my boyfriend got. But he loved it too. The guy who was probably manager there took an interest in us and really helped out my bf in figuring out what to order. It ended up getting really packed by the time we left but that guy was really on it and helped us the whole way. I really liked the service. I like the spot. I like the service. I like the food.

Yelp
DO NOT COME HERE!!! The food is inedible and disgusting. I stopped in to get breakfast today and when I got home I was baffled by my order. $17 down the drain. I got 2 platters with sausage, eggs and homefries. I also got a grillled cheese bagel. They're using IMITATION cheese. My cheese did not melt at all. I put it in the microwave in my house and the darn cheese don't melt at all. It won't budge. At least give me processed American cheese that'll melt with high heat not a watered down fake cheese. I'm so livid. I could go back at yell at them because no only are they awful with their customers, the food is down right disgusting. NEVER EVER GOING BACK OR RECOMMENDING!! Stay away you've been warned.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Don't come here if you expect basic customer service. I walked in and I was the only person on line. The jerk taking food orders just looked at me and turned away. No acknowledgement. I had to give my order with his back to me. He doesn't even tell me when it's done or that he gave it to the register.

Qbtrueg N.

Yelp
Most expensive bagel place in New York City I bought a French toast bagel with butter and jelly and a protein shake 18.50 is ridiculous. The lady charges you whatever she wants to charge you one day she charge me 16th the next day she charged me 18 she does whatever she wants in here. Mad rude no customer service shit is a joke.
google avatar

Joseph T.

Yelp
Picked up an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. Service was pretty quick. Bagel was fine. Would opt for a different cream cheese next time.

robyn b.

Yelp
Awful. Bagel was small and burnt. Hardly any egg. Very unfriendly. 2 stars because my bacon was well done. Will not return.
google avatar

Marion M.

Yelp
Asked for a toasted bagel and cream cheese. The guy must have not heard me past the loud music and plastic barriers, so got it untoasted which I didn't think was that big of a deal. Simply asked that they fix the order. The cashier proceeded to roll her eyes at me and the guy I ordered with said I had ordered wrong. Bottom line: plenty of other good bagel options near by and you don't have to deal with rude staff.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Decent bagels and food. Prices are a little high in some cases (breakfast sandwiches). Service stinks on a consistent basis. If you order from their own website, they won't even get or acknowledge the order. I showed up to pick up an order they had no idea about, and I placed it on their own website! A couple walked in who had placed an order on Seamless and they had no issue getting their order. I'll make sure to use Seamless then, even though Seamless charges businesses such high fees...I guess for some reason they're more on top of Seamless orders. The place seems very disorganized and I can never just be "in and out" there, there's always some issue with an order.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
Horrible place. I ordered a danish and iced coffee. When I got home I noticed the danish is Not fresh, maybe 2 days old and hard as a rock. I go back and lady is rude. Please don't waste your money or time. They have ice in a beer cooler. Dirty place no wonder why they have grade pending in window.

Yelp
I love this place and am glad it exists in my neighborhood. The last time I went there I just got half a pound of tuna salad and it was super affordable. Prior to that I had gotten a full breakfast: eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast and it was a solid meal. I've also gotten plenty of bagels, bacon eggs and cheese breakfast sandwiches here. Yummy stuff. I love the woman who works at the register. I think she's the owner's wife and she's very nice and professional. I like to order, pay and then wait outside and get some fresh air. They knock on the glass when my order is ready and I go and grab it. Quality bagel joint.

Emily I.

Yelp
Decent bagel shop!! Their smoothie was really fulfilling and refreshing! Flavor on point too! Their tofu cream cheese was OK, but not too bad. Giving this a 3-star for a nyc bagel shop if I were in another state it'd be a 4 or 5

Yelp
Walked inside for the first time today. Wanted some coffee. Lady behind the counter not pleasant at all. Waited patiently for her to finish up with woman in front of me. A man had walked in after me and asked me if I was going to order a bagel and I said no. Just waiting for coffee. She finished up with the lady and the gentleman's order was done. She proceeded to ignore me. Never asked me what can she get me. Nothing. Was about to ring up the guys order when I stopped her and said "excuse me miss, I was here before he was"... she just looked at me and then asked me what can I get you..with a look like she didn't even want to be bothered. I just walked out. So much for giving a new place a shot. Will never return and will tell everyone I know not to go there either. Terrible service.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Expensive for bagels that sometimes taste old.. it's hit or miss in the couple of times I've been there. Place seems disorganized inside, but outside seating is nice. Credit card minimum is $10 which is kind of steel.. a bagel with cream cheese will run you roughly $6 here.

Kendall G.

Yelp
Whenever I go somewhere and it isn't great, I give it a second chance. I've been to Bread Brothers 3 times now. Each time it got worse. Bagels were consistently small and stale. Also 2/3 times I went before 8:30am and they were already out of everything bagels. Also to mention the cream cheese - the first time, the cream cheese tasted so sour I couldn't eat it. And the third time they just put a giant scoop right in the middle, so when I pulled the bagel a part into the 2 pieces it just pulled all the cream cheese off one half. Save yourself and don't come here. I've wasted too much money on this establishment.

David N.

Yelp
Disregard the bad reviews, this place makes their bagels fresh every morning at 3/4 am and even delivers them to your favorite famous bagel shops around the city. They are amazing, the perfect dense NY bagel! Millions of spread options. Very friendly local spot.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I was about to give 4 stars since this is a edible neighborhood go-to spot for a hungover bagel, but I made the mistake of checking Yelp health violations. I've ordered from here a few times, typically getting the whole wheat everything bagel with scallion tofu cream cheese. Honestly I'm surprised and impressed that this spot has vegan cream cheese knowing the area. The bagels are essentially New York style, just a bit smaller with lesser quality dough. The cream cheese is great and portion of it is on par with other New York bagel places! The prices aren't bad and people complain about the ordering system and yes the plastic barriers are annoying, but I've yet to find a bagel place with a wildly efficient ordering and paying system. I will be returning again and again partially against my will. Side note--their 2good2go is amazing and I got over a dozen bagels for $6.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Ugh guys bagels are so great, but they're so slow. There doesn't seem to be a system in place and it's pretty chaotic..and pricey. Also their credit card machine is painfully slow
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Food is decent, can find better in the neighborhood. The woman who works the front register almost everyday is extremely rude and combative. I've seen her be rude to others and myself too many times. I live directly upstairs and will take the longer walk to not deal with her attitude. I'm nervous she might steal Christmas.
google avatar

Liz H.

Yelp
My first visit to Bread Brother's Bagel shop was quite disappointing. Inside is crowded with little organization and no social distancing. The barriers put up to protect customers/employees severely block sound to the point that it's difficult to order and causes errors. We ordered two toasted plain bagels with scallion cream cheese, a cold brew, and iced latte. However, what we received was two very salty pretzel bagels, not toasted. Latte was made with the wrong milk and the 'cold brew' is just an iced coffee. The staff is not organized or efficient, there was a long line of frustrated customers, with one walking out and another had been waiting for a while so received his bagel free. It was a stressful experience for all parties involved and somehow we left paying nearly $20 for items that turned out to be wrong in every way. If you're looking for a decent bagel spot or coffee, look elsewhere. We will not be returning.

Joe V.

Yelp
This place is hit or miss. Prices are a little steep...bagels are good but some days they appear to be using day olds. The woman at the fronts people skills/customer service skills have some room for improvement Just moved to the neighborhood - place is good until we find something better. Though 15 bagels for $15 is a good deal. Also they are selling items in the fridge past their use by date so make sure to check those before purchasing.

Jacob K.

Yelp
Just terrible. The bagels are unremarkable and overpriced will surely be burnt to a crisp if you ask for them to be toasted. There's a terribly inconvenient $10 card minimum which might make you want to check out their pre-made sides dishes. Don't. Their salads, pastries, and other sides will not be fresh and may even be moldy. The cashier is horribly rude. She will berate you if you don't hear her call your order the first time over the loud weekend crowds and snap at you if you ask a basic question. The final straw for me was when I walked in with my dog (who is small and well-behaved) and I was promptly screamed at by the cashier that he was not allowed in and that I needed to take him out immediately. My dog has been in this shop with me plenty of times before. He has never caused any trouble and we were never told that animals weren't allowed inside. The rest of the staff is fine, but the extreme unpleasantness of the cashier can't be made up for with expensive and subpar bagels. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Jessi's Coffee Shop. They're friendly, reasonably priced, have delicious bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and breakfast burritos, and they don't hate dogs.

Kimberly C.

Yelp
5/5 definitely recommend! Tasty bagels and lunch options. My go to quick stop spot :)
google avatar

Winslow B.

Yelp
Great bagels, grumpy staff. Why do they act as though they work at the post office? How could you be so miserable serving tasty bagels?
google avatar

Ehren E.

Yelp
Perfect quick breakfast! Tons of cream spreads, flask to gelato style set up but cream cheese! Prices are a bit much but I'm from Missouri (#stickershock). Small area with not the best waiting area. Gets a bit congested. Clean though. Down to the bagel! Soft, fresh, toasted very nicely. Certainly worth calling itself a nyc bagel. The lox was a good portion and a quality portion of spread. Again price was a little much (check out photos). Would I go back? Yes! Though I'd be more likely to keep checking bagel places out, cause why not, it's NYC!

Tylaysia G.

Yelp
Pretty expensive for breakfast , i don't understand it ! These places are outrageous need to have more affordability for customers and not overcharging

Yelp
The manager or owner who is operating this place exhibits childish and beyond disrespectful behavior. I placed an order at 6:34 AM and waited over 90 minutes after the order did not come. I called to check in and he said his driver did not show because of the trains. I told him I get it; however, it was unacceptable to not call and let me know that there would be a delay due to his faulty operations. He told me that he's tired of people telling him what to do and that I would not get the food and that my order is cancelled and hung up. This is completely unacceptable and I am filing multiple complaints with Seamless, BBB, and will continue to voice my concern for childish and unprofessional behavior.

Andrew K.

Yelp
A hole in the wall but it has great bagels, coffee is good and the price was surprisingly low for the quality.

Tony B.

Yelp
Bagels are fine, but service is awful. They are so rude and almost always get the order wrong. I hate leaving bad reviews, but this place is just the worst

Brianna N.

Yelp
I was waiting here for 20 minutes for a coffee. I was the next person on line and the lady behind the counter shooed me away to take every single person who got there after me since they had ordered food. They wouldn't let me order since I didn't order food. And they were very rude to my friends who did order food.

Mike E.

Yelp
Ordered on Doordash. When I arrived I was screamed at that they didn't have a Doordash account while someone was sweeping the floor dirt at me. We paid for it on Doordash, when I tried to show them my paid receipt the manager began to yell at me. I've gone in plenty of times over the years and would have just made a new order and paid for it. Never going back again.
google avatar

Sheena B.

Yelp
I don't even use Yelp anymore, but I'm dusting it off just to write this review. The quality of this place has sunk to such sad levels. - First I noticed all the great staff here was gone. Fired. The owner stands around with his wife and they bark at the remaining employees quite harshly. These people look and sound miserable at all times. - I LOVE smoked whitefish. I've always bought pounds, or half pounds to bring home. I had to stop ordering theirs because they no longer do what every bagel place in NYC does, which is use Acme smoked whitefish. I'm just guessing at that, but smoked whitefish in New York always tastes the same. Not anymore! These guys cheaped out, try to make their own & it's really terrible. Whoever heard of bad smoked whitefish?! - Flavored cream cheese. Ooooof! My boyfriend brought me home a bagel with some bacon cheddar cream cheese that was so vile I actually spit it out in the garbage! Wow. How could anything boasting bacon taste that bad?! I tried to eat half of his dill cream cheese bagel and it sucked, but I didn't have to spit it out at least. So we decided, ok, no more cream cheese or smoked whitefish from here ever again. We can just get the bagels and bring them home to dress ourselves, right? WRONG! Now they're making their bagels thinner! I mean COME ON! Now they look like a bagel that you'd get at a coffee cart for 50¢. Look, I'm a native. I know bagels. The owners here obviously shouldn't be running a bagel place anymore. I hope they sell it to someone who knows you can't cheat customers with crappy ingredients and poorly made food. I'll go to Jessie's across the street and for bagels I'll make the walk to the Lorimer stop shop.
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
Great bagels! Average coffee wouldn't expect anything more from a bagel shop! Probably the best place to get a bagel in this area. Both delivery and going there in person were good experiences. Good drink selection and other pastries look good too.
google avatar

Ellie T.

Yelp
The bagels are great and they have a large selection of toppings. The service, in particular the ordering system, is not that organized and its pretty crazy during the weekends and it might take a while to get a plain bagel with cream cheese during those times.

Kyler A.

Yelp
Bagels taste like Starbucks, cream cheese tastes spoiled, and customer service is shockingly bad. I hate putting a small business down but I think they need to make an effort to improve their experience if they expect locals' support.
google avatar

Shelly D.

Yelp
So today I called to switch my order from Ham to Turkey Bacon, since I'm the grubhub app there's no option for turkey bacon under "Create your own Wrap" I was hurt when "Roy" , told me that I couldn't read, I couldn't handle the truth, and that I was a liar. All because I told him the option wasn't there. He had a very heavy accent so I'm not sure who he is but this is unacceptable business practice and I do not recommend anyone eat here I would like a personal apology from this person because I have proof that at the time I ordered there was no option for turkey bacon. Why would I lie about that and waste my time calling there. Smh there's no excuse for his behavior.
google avatar

Logan P.

Yelp
They had a sandwich board out front advertising a bagel with bacon egg and cheese for $4.99, with a free coffee, so I went in to get one. Unfortunately after I ordered they told me I wouldn't get the coffee because my bagel had two eggs in it instead of one... Okay. Step one. Their ATM machine was broken, but he still wouldn't run my card because of a $10 minimum. "I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to," he said. " But you can buy a large coffee, and then it will be $10."
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
The food here is quite good... when they get your order right. I've been coming here for quite a while and the staff always seem to mess up my order in one way or another. Today I ordered a toasted whole wheat bagel with egg, cheese, and tomato. And I got a non-toasted everything bagel with egg, cheese, and tomato. Not the biggest mistake ever, right? But I have also had way too many occasions where I paid for a tomato, only to open the packaging 20 mins later to find no tomato. Frustrating to say the least. But when they do get it right, it's usually great. My advice is to open up your food on the spot and hand it back to them to be fixed. It's seriously wrong like 70% of the time.
google avatar

Silky W.

Yelp
Place is horrendous. Ordered tuna on a bagel and was appalled when I literally got a bagel with just mayonnaise caked on. When I brought it their attention the owner sucked his teeth and made it seem like it was my fault. Excuse me, did you really think I actually ordered a mayonnaise bagel? What psychopath eats mayonnaise bagels, it's clearly an error on your part. Needless to say, his attitude was too much do I opted for a refund which it's now been 6 days and still nothing. Avoid this place like the plague.

Julie N.

Yelp
The dude who rang me up was so rude. And yes I'm from ny. The food isnt that good that its worth bad service.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Good bagels and selection of creamcheese but be ready to pay an arm and a leg. I got a bagel and lox with a small iced coffee and it came to almost 16!!! The bagel lox only had one thin slice of lox and one thin slice of tomato so I couldn't even eat it open face with enough for both sides of the bagel. They charge $12 for that?! What a total rip off. Update: I just got a toasted bagel with cream cheese and it cost $6! This place is the biggest rip off of any place ever.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place zero stars. I will not be giving them money ever again. Today, the man taking my order asked me THREE times if I 'was sure,' that I wanted 2x egg whites. When I insisted I was sure (obviously) he told me deadpan "it's going to be expensive, so don't complain." I can't believe the audacity he had to be so rude to a customer. I have a feeling the exchange wouldn't have happened were I not a woman.

Amy A.

Yelp
Don't know why there are low reviews--bagels are great quality, other things I've tried have been good, and I've never had a problem with the service. Great affordable breakfast/lunch to go
google avatar

Dev O.

Yelp
For the most part, I've had hit an miss experiences here. I always order the same thing- turkey bacon egg and cheese and the quality goes up and down. Sometimes I'll only find one piece of bacon on there. But this time they should honestly be ashamed of what they gave me. Me and my boyfriend both order BLTs and they were inedible. The bread they gave was the ends and were stale. They must have kept the leftover bread from earlier in the day to serve it later. The lettuce was bruised and old. The tomatoes were small halves of slices, barely any mayo, and although we both asked for avocado and coleslaw, we got nothing- even though we payed for it. It wasn't even worth our time to go back and ask them to remake it. They still have those same poor quality ingredients. The only reason I gave them one star is because the staff is nice.
