Breakfast By Salt's Cure Review - Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"We’ve always been fans of Salt’s Cure in Hollywood, especially for breakfast. That’s because they make the best pancakes we’ve ever had in our lives. (Sorry to any parent, grandparent, or lover who has ever made us pancakes.) Salt’s Cure is clearly confident in this skill, because they opened a tiny outpost that specializes specifically in pancakes on Montana Avenue. All of the griddle cakes are made with oatmeal, and you can taste that coarse, almost nutty texture in every bite. We like the OG griddle cakes, but wouldn’t blame you for adding bananas or blueberries into the mix." - Arden Shore

Everyone who is a pancake > waffles person needs to try the OG oatmeal griddle cakes with cinnamon molasses butter. It's pretty special. Love the oatmeal texture, the lacy edges, and the butter that brings everything together. Even though it looks like 3 thin pancakes, it's heavy and fills you up. We also ordered the Blueberry griddle cake which was oddly a significant notch below the OG. It didn't work as well so order the OG!

Google
This place has amazing food! Everything I ate was wonderful and the employees were very kind. Visiting from Texas and glad to have visited this place 🤤 I highly recommend the Banana Nut Griddle Cake and the Chicken Burger. Also enjoyed the arugula salad with picnic ham 😄

Google
My new favorite breakfast. The best eggs!! A rich yolk that complements the griddle cakes, potatoes and picnic ham perfectly. All griddle cakes are tasty including blueberry, chocolate chip, the OG with cinnamon. Staff is fun and happy

Dani S

Google
I would definitely go back ! The food was very tasty . The soft scrambled eggs were a touch too soft but I still enjoyed it . The original stack is where it’s at!! Taste like a warm oatmeal cookie

Google
We ordered chicken burger and egg sausage Sando. Both were 7/10. The hostess recommended chocolate chip pancake (we’re still trying to find the choco chips). When we ordered a cold brew, they handed out a bottle instead :/ Worst customer service and hospitality. Do me a favor and get McD’s instead.

Google
I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’d never had oatmeal griddle cakes before, but these were incredible. Soft without being mushy, with just the right amount of crisp on the edges. We tried a few flavors and loved them all, but the blueberry was definitely the standout. Even the gluten-free version was delicious (a rare win — it actually tastes good and not inedible) A must-try breakfast spot.

Google
Such a great place to come for a quick little breakfast! I couldn’t recommend the griddle cakes enough. The classic OG griddle cake is phenomenal. Only downside to this location is that there is very limited seating, but usually you can find a seat by the time your order is ready. Everything here is à la cart, but the griddle cakes are enough to fill you up as they come in a stack of three— they don’t serve the griddle cakes after 12 PM I think! The staff here is so friendly and attentive, they brought the food right to the table and cleared my plate as soon as I was done. 🚗As far as parking is concerned, there is metered street parking available! 🦼As far as accessibility, the counters are at a appropriate height for a wheelchair. The menus are very legible, only concern is big wheelchairs maneuvering around the small space. There was no ramp required for entry.

Google
We ordered the breakfast sandwich, chicken burger, and hashbrowns to go. The food was better than I expected! The sausage and sauce on the sandwich was sooo delicious. The hasbrowns were crispy on all sides and soft in the middle! Would definitely come in again! Editing review based on the experience I had the very next morning when we visited again. The breakfast sandwich was completely different that the day prior- it was dry and they didn't add our avocado on it despite us being charged. The inconsistency is disappointing so I took off a star from the rating.

Yelp
I no longer cook, except for breakfast (the most important meal of the day!). I mix up what I have, and I love going out for breakfast also, as variety is truly the spice of life! Somehow, I had never been to Breakfast By Salt's Cure until this past week. Crazy, right!?!? Read the other comments for more specifics on the 5 kinds of pancakes (sort of) that they serve and the other side dishes. What I ate was the Blueberry Oatmeal Griddle Cake and the Hash Brown. Let me tell you my prejudice about hash browns: too mushy and not brown enough. NOT HERE! These Hash Browns (and, admittedly, there are two somewhat small pieces) are perfectly cooked! Very crunchy on the outside and the middle makes sure you know you are eating potato. I could not improve on them. The Blueberry Griddle Cake was exactly as the cashier/server promised: delicious! He steered me right. Some reviewers have commented on the difficulty of finding seating. I must have hit it perfectly (or maybe it is Summer-Lite?), but there were plenty of comfortable seats available when I arrived. I will definitely go back soon!

Yelp
August 2024 | Santa Monica: My friend and I tried this restaurant today, as we heard the oatmeal griddle pancakes were amazing...and they are! Apple Pancakes: Delicious & definitely full of flavor! I also loved the soft pieces of baked apples inside! Yum! Each bite was like a little surprise of deliciousness! I would absolutely order the apple pancakes again... And bring my own little travel size container, or packet of syrup! To Syrup or not to Syrup! Yes, syrup, please! I like to have options! We were told that the syrup was cooked inside with the pancakes & they do not have syrup... I still need a little bit of syrup or the option to pour syrup on top! Superstar: The Scrambled Eggs were absolutely delicious! They were fluffy, tasty and you can tell that high-quality eggs were used! Loved it! Seating: Several tables, a bit limited for sure, which were in "high demand," as it's a really popular place, with a steady flow of traffic! We were happy to get a table right away after our order! We were going to try another restaurant if they were no seats available! Overall: Yes, I would absolutely return, because the pancakes & scrambled eggs are amazing! And yes, I will bring my own syrup, it's a must!

Yelp
Really yummy restaurant in Santa Monica area for a good breakfast. Ordered the OG griddle cakes, scrambled eggs and hash browns - so good! Order at the counter and take a seat at the indoor tables.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a gem! AMAZING pancakes, so flavorful and fluffy. The hash browns were another favorite and had a super crunchy exterior. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly which is hard to find. Breakfast sandwich was tasty & to top it off, the freshly squeezed orange juice was delicious. They fill up quickly but the line moves fast! Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
This place is excellent. There are only about 5 items on the menu, I recommend trying everything and sharing. My favorites are the hash brown, chicken sausage and ofcourse the OG griddle. Not that much seating inside but turnover is quick. If you are looking for a great casual brunch with a small group this is the perfect place.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for a quick breakfast and it bustling on a Saturday morning. We had to share a table with another couple since all the other ones were taken. I ordered the vegan sausage sandwich which was very salty but better with the hot sauce. You order at the counter and pay first before receiving a number. There is a single occupant restroom available in the back. Indoor dining only. Metered street parking. Credit cards accepted.

Yelp
Easily 5 stars! I loved the OG pancakes with that yummy maple butter. A pancake unlike any other texture I've had. (However, the chocolate chips pancakes just tasted like chocolate oatmeal, but I'd simply not order them again.) A "wow!" for the hashbrowns and the chicken sausage. The hashbrowns are interestingly really thick. Incredible crisp on the outside and somehow like mashed potatoes in the inside. The chicken sausage was hot, juicy and flavorful too! Truly a unique breakfast with great twists on classics. Hot coffee a little expensive for a small cup ($5) but at least good coffee. I saw some people bring in their lattes from La La Land up the street which might be the move and the staff didn't seem to mind. I see what other people mean about the seating situation. Personally, we got a table fast and they cleaned up between customers. There seems to be a tacit understanding to not take your sweet time, but not a stressful "people are staring at me and I feel rushed" vibe. Definitely will be coming again to try more :)

Yelp
I love the chocolate chip griddle cakes here. They are unlike any other pancakes I've had before. I like the crisp edges and the middle is almost a little mushy, which isn't what I typically like, but it works and it's delicious. The ambience isn't the best, but luckily the pancakes make up for it. It's a small order at the counter place, so it's very casual.
google avatar

Yelp
Eating here seems like a race lol.... u are pressured to finish your breakfast in 15 mins as soon as the food is served. Food is good but expensive. Space is cramped, i think it can only hold up to 20 people. My family have to eat on separate tables and we did not get to enjoy our breakfast
google avatar

Steven P.

Yelp
deeply obsessed w the griddle cakes. they are perfect. hash brown (it comes out on a cube!) is awesome too. A+
google avatar

Shahzaib K.

Yelp
I've been here so many times this past year its silly. They just have amazing pancakes, they are unlike other shops and taste the same everytime. The scrambled eggs are also the BEST. Staff is always veryy hospitable, and its always a nice hollywood-ish vibe in here. Daylight fills the shop and its lovely to sit and eat. Try the pink lady pancakes ‍
google avatar

Abby F.

Yelp
This small restaurant offers limited seating and a simple ordering process where you place your order before sitting down. The menu is concise, with the OG griddle cakes standing out as the best choice. The chocolate griddle cakes are also tasty but extremely rich. Service is quick, making it an ideal spot for a light breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
The best griddle cakes I've ever had! I'm a self-described waffle person, but I couldn't resist the allure of trying Breakfast after a hike in Temescal Canyon Park (nearby). Salt's Cure is famously known for the farm to table meals, so I expected nothing but high quality at Breakfast. I love the simple menu, which helps them focus on quality over quantity. The OG Griddle Cake is how all breakfast cakes should taste--almost crepe-like with the crispy griddle edges. The hash browns were good--kind of like a McDonald's hash-brown's cousin who weight lifted. I'm not a great judge of scrambled eggs, since I prefer them over easy or fried like most Filipinos, so I won't comment on them. The restaurant is counter service, and the staff was great! My only negative was the drink selection. I wish they brewed their own iced tea instead of selling bottles. The restaurant, itself, is located in a very cute area of Santa Monica without tourists, but still plenty of shops!
google avatar

Maura C.

Yelp
Overall, this is a cute spot and they're always very consistent with the food. The griddle cakes are incredibly filling but don't leave you feeling gross like traditional pancakes sometimes do. The chocolate chip and OG are my go-to choices, but both are pretty sweet and rich -- I can almost never finish my plate despite how thin they are! The texture is really unique, with super crispy edges and almost a soufflé-like texture on the inside. Last time I visited I also had a glass of their lemonade which was a very tart and refreshing choice! Finding seating can definitely be a challenge. I arrived at 11am on a Sunday with one other person, and there were probably 5 parties ahead of us in line. There are only a handful of tables inside (and possibly some outside?) so once you order at the counter, you just step to the side, wait for your food, and try to grab a table once one opens up. It also felt a bit cramped when we finally did sit down since so many people were standing and waiting for seats to become available after placing their order. If you're looking for a leisurely brunch spot where you're guaranteed a seat, this is not that, but the menu is simple and the food is delish!

Yelp
Saltiest breakfast sandwich ever. Enough salt to feed LA. Also the avocado came falling out the side once I picked up the sandwich -- it seems like someone just barely sliced it so that it was still in one large piece, all attached at the bottom half. Also, they say there's outdoor seating on their Yelp page which is why we chose here to begin with. However, there is no such seating, we even asked in case we were missing something. Dirty tables as well, we had to wipe off the crumbs ourselves. And that's after I saw the employee "wipe down" the table. **Update: Added two starts after coming back for a second chance. Tried the griddle pancakes instead, yummy with a good amount of blueberries and pretty inexpensive which is nice for Montana. And table was clean.
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
I came here with some friends at 11:30 am ish and there was no wait to order. There was a wait to grab a table since the restaurant itself is super tiny. We waited on the side until there was an open table which was around 10-15 min after we ordered. The griddle cakes are super soft and yummy! This was my first time here and I will def be back. The only down side is how small the place is but other than that the food is super yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
We ate like queens during our week in Santa Monica, so when your breakfast is this memorable, you know it's good. The oat griddle cakes are uniquely divine and everything else was so fresh and delicious!

Meredith Scott L.

Yelp
Just walked in. Craig the manager refuses to add blueberries to the only vegan option. Counter guy said, "No can do." They charge $2 extra for vegan butter. Easy to add blueberries to only vegan option I'm charged more for. Disgraceful. #EatVeganPayMore #EatVeganBePunished

Yelp
I've been here 3 or 4 times now and have really come to appreciate this spot as a regular in my rotation. The menu is no frills and the food is absolutely delicious. Every single item on the menu is breakfast food perfection. Do not leave here without trying an order of the griddle cakes. The service is always above and beyond here as well. They're not just friendly, they're actually helpful and it helps give this place a classic breakfast place charm. It's a small spot, but there's almost always at least one table open from my experience. The only weird thing here is the tiny chairs, but the food and service more than make up for those.
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
Let's start w the positive: best chicken sausage in LA without a doubt. Now that that's done- Didn't realize this place's specialty was undercooked pancakes. You would expect the thinnest "griddle cake" to be properly cooked through or at least have a somewhat crispy edge. And they don't give you any additional syrup Also the arugula is really like a garlic dressing featuring arugula. Carrie rating 2.5/10
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
This spot makes it into the top-three breakfasts of my life. Kid you not, the apple griddle here is like nothing I've had before. Like eating the batter of your favorite cookie or pancake, but it's warm and doughy and buttery. Cannot wait to come back here and try their cinnamon griddle and blueberry one. Even their pork sausage-cheese-and-egg sandwich had this pesto sauce on it that was subtle and made it so unique and incredible, Coming back again next time, no doubt. 5 stars!!!!

Yelp
You must try Salt's Cure. This was the best breakfast I have ever had at a diner style establishment. They are a small business, with a California vibe and not traditional decor. The menu, while not extensive, has gluten free and vegan options. The reason it is so good is the freshness of the ingredients. The farm egg has the brightest yolk. It was shockingly orange. It also is all made to order. The hash browns, crisp rectangles, must have come straight out of a fryer. The oatmeal griddle cake also obviously was from scratch in the best sense. My wife and I ate and relaxed. On the Monday after Thanksgiving, business was light. I hope they flourish. They welcome dogs. The guy at the front was very friendly. He offered a dog biscuit. He also was simply a nice dude.
google avatar

Emily I.

Yelp
The griddle cakes are absolutely DIVINE! Gf said it was some of the best pancakes she's had. There isn't anything quite like it. We got the blueberry & apple griddle cakes, two sides of eggs with cheese (they charge extra duh), hash browns & orange juice. 100000/10 breakfast and for being fully 100% satisfied by the end it didn't break the bank! Gotta try the OG, banana nut & their sausage next time
google avatar

Paula R.

Yelp
First time here! It's a small little place with a simple menu and free coffee refills. I ordered eggs over easy and the OG pancakes. The pancakes were really delicious! Not like any regular pancakes you've had. The maple syrup is cooked into the pancake and they put brown butter and molasses balls on top! Very good, very fattening and a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth! The eggs were also good because I could tell they used high quality eggs by the rich orange color of the yolk! That usually means the hens were pasture raised. I didn't ask but I think they are pasture raised. Fast and friendly service too!
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Arrived at 1:43 -- place closes at 2pm -- and they say they're "to go" only after I waited in line for several minutes. Classy stuff. This place can go f*** itself, honestly, it's only a matter of time they go out of business and I'll for sure be dancing on their grave.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
The only problem with Breakfast by Salt's Cure is finding a place to sit in the bare utilitarian space as it is often packed to overflowing. The reason, of course, is the food. Their griddle cakes are a unique pancake experience and supper good. I am partial to the blueberry, but the trick is to order with two other people and split all three varieties. The only pancakes that compare for taste and texture are top flight lemon ricotta pancakes. Their breakfast sausage is also very tasty as are the hash brown cakes, although I prefer traditional hash browns as a rule. The large slice of "breakfast ham" is also an excellent choice. Bottom line great food but probably best ordered to go and enjoyed at home. Then, you get the best of both worlds.
google avatar

Wesley J.

Yelp
I observed an unfortunate situation while standing in line at Salt's Cure this Sunday morning. A mother (significant because it is in fact Mother's Day), and patron of Salt's Cure for 20 years, was denied a seat because she ordered her food "to go" - quite rudely by the cashier. Of course, the only reason she ordered the food "to go" was because of the packed the restaurant, where she might not be able to get a seat if she ordered in and the food arrived before a seat opened up. (She was trying to be courteous). After being denied the seat (her son and husband in tow), all three now forced to wait outside in the chill until their food was ready, she asked to speak to the manager. The most SHOCKING part, was the response from the manager being: "sorry, we do not take complaints." WOW. Insanity. Shocking. The food was good, but not so amazing that anyone would deserve such pretentious treatment. May or may not be back... bad taste in my mouth from watching the whole thing.
google avatar

Mary V.

Yelp
Small treasure hidden on Montana. Love that you can customize type of sausage, griddle and eggs. Only downside is the size of this location as people will be hovering over to stalk your seat once finished.
google avatar

Lilly N.

Yelp
Loved everything that we got. The food was simple but done so well. The hash brows were crispy and elevated and their version of ketchup was delicious. The aioli and sauces in the breakfast sandwich were great. The griddle cakes were heavier than I expected but great and not too sweet. Friendly service, will definitely be back.

Don F.

Yelp
Terrible ambiance. Good eggs but small portion. Tasty blueberry pancakes but with the heavy texture the pancakes needed syrup. They didn't offer syrup. Service by woman at counter was uncaring as she was abrasive in her manner and disinterested. The guy who was mainly bussing was much friendlier. Prices high, little reason to go back to this restaurant

Yoni K.

Yelp
Cozy vibe that kind of feels like a mix between a college cantina and a ski lodge diner. If you sit by the window, you will be happy. Came here for my wife's birthday breakfast and didn't have to wait because it was a Friday morning. We ordered the og griddlecake, eggs, side of avocado and home fries. Everything tasted just wonderful and super reasonable price. Would absolutely come again, but would really have to snag that window seat again because it really makes a difference.
google avatar

Daniel G.

Yelp
Eggs sausage and potatoes came in individual plates. Once combined it was very good Liked the coffee

Vitor ..

Yelp
The best breakfast I had in days! Gotta order the OG, it's like you're bitting a piece of cloud! The chicken sandwich also, no words... Small place with excellent food.
google avatar

LJ L.

Yelp
Good food. Sausage was a bit salty and didn't like that my eggs and arugula was overflowing the plate and touching the dirty table which I wiped clean myself and it was filthy. but I removed those pieces of the food and enjoyed the meal. Nothing particularly bad that would keep me away, just preferences.
google avatar

Madie D.

Yelp
I love that you can order individual pancakes and mix and match flavors at this place!! The prices are so reasonable and the food was very tasty! Their pancakes are nice and thin, with a crunchy exterior and delightful flavors. All of our food came out quickly and was made to order. I was so impressed by this place and it is in the perfect part of Santa Monica, off of the main tourist strip but still around several cute, walkable businesses. I will definitely be back :)
google avatar

Teresa G.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich horrible too salty and bread stale but haven't tried the other items heard they are really good ‍ so 3 stars for the breakfast sandwich

Kristen M.

Yelp
Sat down and asked if I could pull over an extra chair. They said if another group comes up we're lose the table since my whole party was a couple minutes out - totally understandable. But then when they got there and said another couple had ordered they'd get the table even though we were 5 at the only 5 person table and they were 2. And they said there was a sign at the front explaining this but when I asked the human - he explained it terribly and then was incredibly rude and unhelpful. We used to love this place - after this experience, we will never come back. What dumb service. Such a disappointment as someone local to the neighborhood who loved this spot. Wish there was management available to speak to.
google avatar

Kelly Q.

Yelp
Stopped by Salt's Cure for Sunday brunch and tried the avocado toast. The toast was good but nothing special. I also felt that the toast was a bit oily, which I don't really enjoy since I normally enjoy a more fresh, light avocado toast. The restaurant setup is to order at the front and grabbing a table that is available. The place was definitely packed, but I only had to wait ~5 minutes to find a seat. Street parking is easily accessible outside the shop and can be validated inside.

Eric P.

Yelp
Food was very good given very limited options. Ambiance not so much. Maybe add a server. Quality of food is terrific
google avatar

Alyssa C.

Yelp
rarely do I ever go out to eat breakfast but I decided to try the griddle pancakes here today! this spot is super cozy and simplistic with a straight forward menu. the OG griddle cake was lovely and slightly crispy. soft scrambled eggs were yummy but wish I asked for Cholula on the side. you order first then seat yourself. order up for a good start to your morning!
google avatar

nerses A.

Yelp
The hype is just that, hype. Truly there must be nothing to eat in this area and the people eating here never got back their taste buds after COVID. We had The OG oatmeal PANCAKES and the apple oatmeal pancakes. The apple had no taste in the pancake's but I can see the apples on my fork. WTH. It tasted burned on the outside and like oatmeal mush on the inside. Same thing for the OG. Basically they literally take cooked oatmeal and mix it with batter. Holly cow !!! Must be a Le Cordon Bleu chef in the back you say? Oh no it isn't. To top it off, the place was dirty and needed a good cleaning and paint. Go look at the picture of the filthy dirty restaurant. Good luck, you been warned. PS...DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE PAID 5 STAR REVIEWS BY ELITE REVIEWERS!!! Go look, mostly all the 5 * are from elite members.

Yelp
We were looking for a westside Sunday brunch place because apparently I don't take my fiance out enough. We happened upon this spot, which wasn't the eggs Benedict, avocado toast (which they do sell) kale juice spot she wanted, but relationships are all about compromise. Breakfast By Salt's Cure is a slightly bougier greasy spoon. And it sure is greasy, but everything is charred perfectly. The griddle cakes have crispy edges that despite the syrupy cinnamon molasses butter, maintains it's texture with a fluffy center. No bacon as their FAQ states, but the picnic ham in my opinion is a great stand-in. It's tender and is fatty enough to be a thick slab of bacon with a hint of sweetness. With the no gimmicks, simple, a la carte menu, you won't need to negotiate with your significant other about which combo plate you're allowed to order to satisfy your own cravings of sausage and griddle cakes while she helps herself to your home fries and orders her combo plate. Everyone can just get what they want!
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
I absolutely love their simple menu. Their Oatmeal Griddle Cakes are ridiculous. And the best looking eggs I've eaten at a breakfast place. Cute little spot after a run at Santa Monica.
google avatar

Katherine H.

Yelp
Smooshy avocado toast Please change ur bread !! to sourdough for 5 stars or at least have as an option No one likes a smooshy soggy avocado toast . Other than that the arugula salad was delicious and so are the hash browns and pancakes are fantastic!!
google avatar

Madi M.

Yelp
This place was UNREAL it was so good!!! The pancakes were incredible- the oatmeal makes it a whole new level. I got the apple one and it was phenomenal, I also tried a bite of blueberry and it was so good!! Somehow not overly sweet but also satisfying. I also got scrambled eggs- simple and delicious! The best part? SO affordable. $5 per pancake or $10-14 for stack of 3 depending on pancake type. The eggs were only a couple dollars- we got breakfast for two for $22 plus tip! They also offered a cupcake treat for our pup. This hidden gem is a MUST for locals, foodies, and tourists alike!! It's also in a super cute area of Santa Monica so it's perfect for anyone wanting to eat then walk around/ explore.
google avatar

Yelp
Came by this morning with my mom & collectively ordered the OG & Banana Nut griddle cakes with a side of eggs and home fries. For the price & insanely good quality of the griddle cakes - absolutely worth it for breakfast. The customer service was stellar & all the staff were really friendly. Definitely will come back & recommend to others.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh. My. Gosh! The griddle cakes are to die for. So light. So delicious. So perfect!! Scrambled eggs on the side rounded on my meal. I wanted to come back the second day too! They're that good. Sidewalk seating is an added bonus.
google avatar

Yelp
Montana ave is full of great businesses, this just happens to be one of the best breakfast places I've been to in the area. I ordered the blueberry stack with a side of scrambled eggs and chicken sausage. Let me just start with saying WOW! The consistency of these griddle cakes was insane. I was both full and sad at the end of it, but still thought about ordering more. If you're in the area, this spot is a must! My only complaint is that the space is pretty small, so finding a spot to sit can be difficult. Other than that, the food was beyond amazing, and I will be coming back to try the other griddle cakes available on the menu!

Vannetta H.

Yelp
Ambiance was kinda funny but the OG Griddle cakes were amazing. Everything was just very expensive for the overall experience.
