New York City’s 12 Best Farmers Markets to Visit This Fall | Eater

"Yes, you can grow a thriving farm on a rooftop in the middle of New York City. Case in point: Brooklyn Grange, which harvests more than 80,000 pounds of organic produce annually on three rooftop farms in the city. The newest is in Sunset Park, Brooklyn; it launched this summer and is open to the public on Sundays through October. You can visit the farm for free, check out the massive greenhouse with its hydroponically grown vegetables and microgreens, and buy seasonal produce like baby mustard greens, arugula, kale, eggplant, and root vegetables." - Vox Creative

A wonderful, fully functional farm on a roof! Several acres of vegetables and flowers, garden tours with extremely knowledgeable staff, and just a peaceful place to walk around. If you are lucky enough you can join the very affordable CSA and get amazing things every week! It's one of my favorite things about the summer!

I photographed a stunning wedding at this venue. The location, size, the way the light hits, the staff, all EXCELLENT. I hope to be back for another.

I loved the roof-stoop event I attended here on Sunday. My group came for a bachelorette party - we wanted to do something casual and covid-safe. This was perfect. The food was out of this world - I’m going to be thinking about that matcha dessert forever. The drinks were delicious and creative too. Half of my group was drinking alcohol and the other half was drinking non-alcoholic beverages - there were tons of creative options for both types. The views are insane. Lots of great photo spots.

There is so much to love about Brooklyn Grange @ Sunset Park. It was important to me to choose a wedding venue that was already beautiful, so we didn't have to spend time and money on beautifying an empty space. It was also really important to me to choose a venue with a solid rain-alternative. BG@SP ticked both of those boxes -- it's stunning without any embellishment, meaning we only had to add decor that we truly loved and was meaningful to us. And it was indeed raining, windy, and cold on our wedding day, so being able to move the ceremony inside without any drama was such a relief. After 5 minutes of mourning the outdoor ceremony we'd hoped for, it became clear that an indoor ceremony was the absolute best option - not only because it was raining - but because the reception space overlooks a spectacular view and was so warm and cozy. Claire, Alex, and the whole BG team were great to work with - excellent communicators throughout the 12+ month planning process. I also love that Brooklyn Grange has a mission far beyond being an events space. We felt really proud to bring our family and friends to such a unique and important Brooklyn institution committed to serving and improving the city we love and call home.

The space is beautiful inside and out. There’s outdoor and indoor seating, every spot has great views of the garden and the city. The alcohol selection was so-so, would have been nice if they had a Pilsner or a cocktail option. The food was delicious but the portions were small, most people won’t find it enough for a full meal. Loved that they used reusable napkins, but was troubled by the single-use cups and chopsticks.

Beautiful garden rooftop with superb views of the city. Fresh produce grown (and sold) right here in beautifully maintained gardens.

We went to a wedding on the roof. It was amazing. The views were incredible. The food, mostly grown on roof, was excellent.

Yelp
I organized a UYE here just to check out the farm. Such a great experience. From the beautiful views and meeting some of the staff members, you can tell there's a lot of heart and sweat built into this place. Some fun activities for the kids (leave your stroller by the front), and casual tours of the farm and event space, you can also find some exotic stuff - hybrid fruits and vegetables.

Yelp
Brooklyn Grange Farm proudly mentions on their website that they operate the world's largest farms on three different NYC rooftops - two in Brooklyn (Brooklyn Navy Yard + Sunset Park and one in Queens). Well, I can definitely vouch for their gorgeously spacious Brooklyn Grange Farm + Farmstand located in Sunset Park that I visited recently. Although they have a nicely visible sign pointing to the direction of the rooftop farm, it took me a couple of twists and turns before finding tthe right building, locating the corner elevator, pressing the button to get to the rooftop and arriving to the sliding doors to get to the actual farm -lol. Complete awe came over me as I stepped outside..... So many words can be used to describe Brooklyn Grange Farm in Sunset Park but I will just simply sum it up by saying that it is spectacular! Ok, so I have to add a bit more...lol. Yes, it is spacious as I stated earlier in this review and has such a calming armosphere, etc.. Rows and various areas of wonderfully wonderful rich soil, growing greenery, robustly colorful vegetables, herbs + flowers, beautiful butterflies flying around...All of that and so much more was present at this rooftop farm overlooking sensational scenic views. Just taking so many deep breaths to inhale glorious fresh air while walking slowly around the farm to take in everything made me feel extremely grateful + blessed. Friendly, hardworking staff were kind enough to greet me as they tended to the farm as well as to the farmstand where produce grown is available for purchase. There was an array of peppers, herbs, greens and even carrots. Happily, I bought some mixed salad greens which tasted delicious. Brooklyn Grange Farm + Farmstand works w/ non-profit + CBO's (Community Based Organizations) to provide resources/services including environmental/farming education. It is outstanding to have Brooklyn Grange Farm create organically grown produce to communities which helps foster, maintain and sustain healthy eating/nutrition + well-being. If individuals are interested in visiting and in learning more information, please go to Brooklyn Grange Farm's website- www.brooklyngrangefarm.com, their Instagram + Twitter- @brooklyngrange as well as their Facebook Page - brookylngrange.

Yelp
What a beautiful smart concept! Have a lot of concrete, in a big city, have people with food insecurity.... well - do a green roof like the folks at the Brooklyn Grange. We went to an event at the Navy yard, the views were insane, the garden was lovely and was a perfect night. It is not easy to find in the navy yard so ask for super clear directions before you go. The only sad thing is that even with a government backed program there are only 7 I believe 7 of these in the city. I am shocked there are not more, think of how many people would have access to fresh organic produce if they followed suit with the Brooklyn Grange Farm!!! Way to go Folks!

Yelp
Great views from the rooftop. Really cool to go from a busy Brooklyn area to a farm in the sky. Everyone is really nice. I would suggest a visit on Sunday.

Yelp
Came here with some co-workers for a super unique afternoon of education and bee puns. Brooklyn Grange Farm is the largest rooftop farm in the world, which is super cool considering it's in a city where space is hard to come by. The farm is located in the Navy Yard, which is a bit hard to navigate, but once you get your bearings, it's pretty straightforward. We took the elevator to the roof, which has amazing views of the NYC skyline (they do weddings and events up there as well). After taking some photos, Chase the director taught us all about bee colonies, honey production, dispelled some bee myths, and walked us through a brief history of NYC beekeeping. Afterward, he showed us the hive and let us try honey straight from the comb. It was delicious! Then we went downstairs and Anastasia talked us through the honey production process, the seasonal lives of bee colonies, and what causes differences in the taste of different honeys. And of course, we did a honey tasting! They also sell some cool merch. I picked up a bottle of their small batch hot sauce. Big thanks to Brooklyn Grange for having us and providing us with a newfound appreciation of our fuzzy little buddies!

Yelp
The CSA is a total rip off. We weren't looking for a bounty, but come on - over $25.00 per week and you are lucky if you get $8.00 worth of produce. Oh and what they give is the lamest! I have been a member of CSA's for 25 years, i've never experienced anything like it. The smallest amount of produce and many weeks we don't even receive everything. It's not even interesting produce either. Oh and have to mention the lady with the silver hair is someone to avoid. Every time we see her, she looks so absolutely miserable, giving everyone the stink eye! NO Thanks! I'm done!

Yelp
This is definitely a unique place to spend an afternoon/ evening. We bought tickets to the afternoon Fourth of July party. It was $80 and lasted from 2-6 pm and included unlimited beer/ wine/ coffee drinks and some small appetizers. I love the idea of inviting people up to the rooftop farm-- it was super cool to see vegetables growing on a rooftop with the Manhattan skyline in the background. That being said, we were somewhat underwhelmed with the selection of food-- mini burgers, chicken tenders, light salad, brownie cups, etc.-- and the activities were not all that amazing either. We purchased tickets before they had uploaded the menu, so that may be our bad, but overall we were kinda bummed we paid so much just to sit on a rooftop for 4 hours with not much else to do but make little keychains and play corn hole. Also, the employees seemed very on edge and not very welcoming-- almost as if they didn't really want people up there. I get that people shouldn't be stepping in the gardens, but if you're going to invite people up there, you could act a bit more welcoming and appreciative that they did pay to be there. That being said, the concept of this place is pretty cool so I'd encourage you to check out one of their garden tours that I believe are cheaper, or maybe even free!

Yelp
My favorite wedding venue to work with! As a planner, I always appreciate a venue that helps me bring each couple's vision to life and that was Brooklyn Grange! The staff were really helpful - from answering all of my questions in the planning process, through helping with set up, to ordering taxis for my guests and blasting music during break down to help finish off a day of hard work. And... it's just so darn beautiful!!!

Yelp
Attended the Veggiepalooza event as I first time visitor. The rooftop garden is awesome and the long length of dining table was spectacular. Serving freshly grown veggies from the garden the local chef's delivered amazingly fresh and delicious food. {I wanna do that thing you do when you kiss your fingers and then release them in a bursting scrumptious gesture]. They really served it up. Garden fresh cocktails, hooch with pickle backs and 5 courses served by some of the finest chefs from Faro, Marlow and Sons Lafayette,The Pickle shack and Tipsy Parson. They were especially accommodating to my friends food allergies and we shared our table and meal with some terrific folks. The service, view, food, company, music and vibe was really something special.
