On the Grid : Gebr. Hartering

"Gebr. Hartering will give you a unique dining experience that is one to remember. The restaurant, owned by two brothers, goes by the table d’hôte menu, where you eat from a set menu, selected that day, ranging from 6-9 courses. The restaurant is small, and at a cosy location by the water. If the weather is in your favour, you can dine on the terrace-boat, which is even smaller and cosier. You may need to pass a plate down to your neighbour, or hold on to your glass of wine as it may tumble over as someone steps off the boat." - Resoluut

"Niek and Paul Hartering share a love of ingredients. This cheerful venue proposes a short menu, which changes regularly, as the fusion cuisine depends on the ingredients at their best on the day. Flavours don't lie." - Michelin Inspector

The 38 Essential Amsterdam Restaurants

"At Gebr. Hartering, brothers Paul and Niek Hartering focus on local ingredients and the best wines. Start your meal with some fresh oysters or charcuterie, followed by the daily five- or seven-course menu, the latter including their signature dry-aged, charcoal-grilled prime rib. A fish option is available too, and the vegetable dishes are always inspiring." - Monique van Loon

Easily one of the best dining experiences I ever had. The food was both delicious and interesting in a way that has me looking for the right words to describe. Go with friends/family, share, and enjoy the service, the atmosphere, and the incredible flavors.

Google
Lovely cosy space with delicious food and good service. The 5 course choice was a perfect one - more value for money versus a la carte :) dishes were flavourful and thoughtful and the staff were attentive. A good recommendation!

Google
Really good restaurant! We enjoyed our dinner. The atmosphere is great, it smells like freshly baked sourdough when you walk in, and the bread is extremely fresh and delicious. The appetizers (€20) and main dishes (€35) were also very good, great flavors. Only thing that I can comment on is the price, it’s quite expensive. We paid €200 for two starters & three main dishes & 4 glasses of wine. We decided to eat a la carte, maybe it’s cheaper when you order 5/6 courses, but still we thought the price wasn’t very justified. And one specific other thing, I ordered the fish of the day, and I noticed that the skin on the fish was quite burnt (see pictures), still good though.

Google
We had the 5 course menu. Won’t soon forget. Star of the show was the ribs of course, but the starters were 1000000% out of this world. Xavier gave us the best service. Can’t wait to come back again! Ps. Photos don’t do these wonderful dishes justice ;)

Google
My partner’s dad who recommended the place and we decided to celebrate our anniversary there. The food was very delicious, the best food I ate in Amsterdam for sure. The place is very cosy and romantic. The service also did not disappoint, the staff were very nice to us. Would highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Google
This was a really really special meal. I don’t know if I would call it French. It’s just modern cuisine focused on fresh local ingredients. The sea bass tartare was my favorite dish. The grilled octopus on Romesco was also incredible. And we added a cheese course and had the best blue cheese I’ve ever eaten. But beyond the food, what made this dinner so special was the service. The entire waitstaff knows everyone in the restaurant, looks happy to be there, and speaks to you on a personal level that makes you feel like you’re the most important diner in the restaurant. Floris gave us incredible wine recommendations. Also, the space is very cozy. The tables are almost too close together but the intimacy adds to the vibe. It was not at all stuffy. Attire can be anything from casual to button down. There were people there in sweatshirts. Some sweaters. Lots of button downs. Nearly everyone was in sneakers including the waitstaff. They want you to feel comfortable. I loved everything about this experience.

Google
Very friendly service. Reservations compulsory. Wonderful location. The set 7 course menu is fantastic. The lamb was perfect, loved the cheeses, incredible steak and the cabbage was to die for. The bread also delicious. You will not leave hungry. Extensive wine list too. Highly recommended.

Google
Really special experience in a heart of Amsterdam. I would call it a combination of French methods and Dutch soul. Very friendly and professional personal. Great starters (burrata with gazpacho; grilled cabbage; tourbot) and amazing main dish (pork belly). Would recommend to take 5 course menu as we got full after and couldn’t have managed 7 course menu probably. “Regular” wine by the glass is also nice choice for reasonable price.

Yelp
What a way to start the year with my first review of 2023. We had a reservation for a double date at Gebr. Hartering during the first week of 2023, and we battled the rainy weather to get there. The service was fantastic from the moment we walked in the door. My date and I were the first to arrive for the night, and one of the servers offered to take our photograph. It's an intimate space, very gezellig. Warm, texture-y sourdough bread and copious amounts of tap water (with ice!) arrived at our table. It's the first restaurant who has brought olive oil and salt (in addition to the butter) for my bread, due to the note that I am lactose intolerant. Some of us treated ourselves to Dutch oysters to start. Meaty and significant oysters. We had wine suggested by the sommelier, really enjoyed the recommendations. The dishes were often vegetable-forward, but capped off by the incredibly tender veal cheek as the main. The dairy-free dessert was quite good, lots of hazelnuts and some chocolate sorbet/ice-cream situation. Everyone else had brownie and vanilla ice cream (I snuck a taste of the brownie and loved it). Thank you for such excellent service, and the attention to detail and dietary limitations. Hope to be back, and happy new year!

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance were excellent. I had a multi-course meal paired with wine recommended by my waiter and enjoyed every part of the meal. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I wrote a draft of this restaurant like four or five years ago and never finished it (oops.) This is my partner and my favourite restaurant in Amsterdam. We go out of our way to come here literally each and every time to eat here every time we visit (at least once.) I'm unsure why it doesn't have a Michelin Bib Gourmand or Star, but whatever, it's always excellent. I guess it's because they have the best, freshest ingredients prepared fairly simply. Nothing too fancy, which isn't a problem with me because it's always freakin' delicious. They usually have five or seven courses, including the rib steak which is the best beef I've ever had. I will always go out of my way to get the steak. But honestly? The star is whatever veggie they have with almonds and soy butter sauce. I would bathe in that sauce for days. They usually have some form of this on the menu and it is soOooOOoOo good. I don't drink anymore, but they do have a fairly extensive wine list. The service here is impeccable, including past Dutch standards.

Yelp
Where to start? Friendly, personable, and welcoming service followed by a homely non-pretentiousness environment. Usually you pay for an experience at the expense of some portion of the meal. Not the case here. The food and wine pairings were a perfect mix of new and old with a slant to flavours versus experiments. We have dined at some of the nicest places and the ones like this that welcome two soaking diners in jeans from the rain are the best. We did the 7 courses with wine pairings and experienced everything except the oysters. Nothing was less then lovely. Nothing less than fight over worthy for the wife and I. Things we normally don't care for took on a new tasty profile. As far as dining goes in Amsterdam you'd be tough to beat this. Amsterdam is not well known for its foodie locations, but with restaurants like this appearing the tide is turning.

Yelp
Excellent food and impeccable service. Everything we had was high quality and tasty. This isn't like any restaurant. Intimate vibe and just a different approach to dining.

Yelp
Easily the best meal that we had in Amsterdam during our last visit. The concierge at our hotel helped us make reservations and I am glad that they were able to accommodate us on such short notice. This restaurant is very cute. On the tinier side, but right along one of the canals. It's also an open kitchen format, so you can see and smell everything as it's being prepared. The staff is very helpful with wine pairings, so just ask for help if you need it. We opted for the seven-course menu and I'm glad that we did! Usually prix fixe menus have me feeling overstuffed afterwards, but each course at Gebr. Harterting was perfectly balanced, hearty but not over the top. They had a way of taking simple ingredients (like butter lettuce and nuts, for example) and elevating them to tastes that I didn't know were possible. If you're able to get Rus excited about vegetables, then your establishment is definitely worthy of 5+ stars. Each course blended casually into the next. Here we dined on the best burrata we've ever had. Moist, melt in your mouth, deliciously fresh cheese. Mackerel and beef were also delicious. The menu seems to change often, so check out Instagram to see what others have dined on. I promise you, whatever they're serving will be delicious. When's my next trip to Amsterdam?!

Yelp
"Agrwww, roarrrr"... Rough baby, just the way I like it! No, don't think you get to have a choice. I tell you what to eat, I tell you how much to eat! And frankly my dear, YOU...WILL...LIKE...IT...! Skip my heart a beat with that wild boar meat. You whore! Tickle me with that beef tongue. Spank me with that anchovy butter, drizzled all over those hunks over brill fish awaiting me on a warm soft bed of pureed sunchokes. Ow, I'm choking up! Now, shut up and eat....

Yelp
As a fancy mid-week treat (well Tuesday to be clear), we stumble in for a meal that's a little bit out of the way. I mean it is really just a moment from the Waterlooplein but for whatever reason, as you're crossing the canals, this little spot always feels slightly further out. First order of service, bread, butter and olives. All of this? Gooooood. Bonus amuse bouche of roasted and oiled peppers? Amaaaaaazing. Then it was deciding what and how we wanted to eat. There is la carte and two different set menus for the night but for me, it's the set menu all the way! This way, I can focus on what's coming and not worry to much about whether I ordered the right starter with the right main and so on. The two different set menus for the night varied slightly- I dubbed them Greedy (4 dishes) or Extra Greedy (6 dishes) and for a little extra, if you liked the sound of a slightly different dish (from the opposing menu), you can make a few tweaks to what was on offer. So a set menu with all the best bits? Err, yes please. Two please. And all of this? Subliiiiiiiiiime. Checking off quickly, beetroot and goats cheese salad, yass. The cabbage with anchovies and almonds, omg yaass! Then two different styles of meet, slow cooked and flame grilled in front of us, yaaaassss! Finished off with creme brûlée and cheese, ohmygoooourd yaaaaaassssss! And here comes the only strike of the evening because everything else was incredible. Since the restaurant wasn't completely full that evening, our waiter regretfully informed us that he wasn't able to offer too many different types of wine by the glass, as that meant opening more that might not be finished and.. uhm... #firstworlddrinkingproblems basically. Didn't matter though, it was still a glorious evening with all the pluses. Next time we'll try for a Saturday evening visit for the lux wine treatment, just to be sure!

Yelp
Stop what you're doing and go immediately to my new favourite restaurant in the world. Best food, best wine, best location. These guys should be given a Nobel prize in culinary arts. Punto. Basta.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVED this place. The servers are fantastic, especially the lady (whose name I unfortunately forget) with glasses, who is so enthusiastic, informative and sweet, and really pushed the experience to 5 stars. Oh and trust me, get the prime rib.

Yelp
Gebr. Hartering is literally a hidden gem. You walk in and feel like in your neighbours living room. Your neighbours with the amazing gastronomical skills. The way they advise you about the daily specials and the fantastic wine. The way the chef juggles the pans in the small kitchen. It all looks so nonchalant. And then THE food. I cannot praise ambachtelijkheid enough. Food prepared with love, respecting the season and the local producers is just the way it's supposed to be. Meat from farmers who knew their animals by name (at least I like this idea). Parts from the whole animal, as little waste as possible. Creatively mingled with other exciting ingredients into stunning dishes. I have to admit, I was impressed. I didn't expect it but Gebr. Hartering became one of my favourites.

Yelp
My father still refers to this as the best meal of his life, and I think it's one of mine too. Our group all had the multi-course prefix, but we decided to get a little of everything and share. It was a great decision. The flavors were refined and varied, from sharp veg appetizers, to rich meats, to soft, fresh fish. We even loved the deserts, and we do not usually eat sweets. The service was also exceptional. I can't wait to dine here again the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Awful. I proposed to my Husband here for Marriage and adored this place for 3 years... Brought my company team here several times. Tonight they propose 5 course tasting menu. Lots of Seafood and even Monkfish. Steak never arrived. Lots of excuses. I don't come here for Seafood and deceptive advertising. You come for the Meat. I will never come back. Incredibly disappointed.

Yelp
Very lucky that we got a seat without a reservation, as we happen to walk across it. We tried the 5 course tasting for two. Got to taste a lot of things I've never had before like white asparagus and Spanish cured ham. They use ingredients from all over the world, some combinations I never thought would go together but turned out delicious. The waiter is very knowledgeable, describing the ingredients in each dish in detail. Definitely would recommend making reservations as they do get packed.

Yelp
We ate extremely well during our trip to Amsterdam. We ate here on our last night, and it was hands-down the best meal we had. It's a set menu and for people who enjoy food, not for picky eaters who have a lot of dietary restrictions (to their credit, they were able to accommodate my husband, who is a pescatarian). The bread was amazing. That was the start. We enjoyed leeks, a puff pastry with blue cheese sauce, beet salad (as substitute for chicken liver), roasted squid bathing in its ink (super fresh and delicious), and pork neck (my husband had a pan seared white fish as substitute). For dessert, salted caramel ice cream with macadamia nuts. The waiter was super nice and helpful; service was great. We plan to come back here every time we go to Amsterdam from now on.

Yelp
My attention was drawn to Gebr. Hartering by the server at the Hiding in Plain Sight (HPS) cocktail lounge which is next door. She said it was one of her favorite places to eat in Amsterdam. It was only after she recommended it that I realized it was also featured in my LUXE "travel guide". The food was amazing. Much of it was prepared on a charcoal grill and the seared, carbony flavor of the technique was therefore solidifying theme running through all of the courses. We ordered a four course tasting menu, and expanded to the full seven course tasting menu after our first two dishes. The very first amuse was a lightly charcoal grilled leek that was sublime. The second amused of crispy Kale and charred anchovy bones with anchovy sauce surpassed the first course, and I especially appreciated this quite derivative and revealing take on a "Ceasar" salad. The first course was a headcheese (a coldcut composed flecks of all sorts of pig face and ear) with tasty accouterments of mustard and roast garlic). The second course was charcoal grilled octopus that was perfectly prepared and paired with other flavors. The third course was a charred brill (fish) with yummy sunchokes. We added the grilled rib steak that was thinly sliced and scrumptious. We finished with dessert... a divine creme brulee with just a little bit of pepper, followed by an uber delicious scoop of coffee ice cream flavored served with a few slivers of sliced pistachio and a few strands of candied orange zest. This was the perfect way to end our visit in Amsterdam... but I might suggest you start yours here. If you are deciding between Greetje (old dutch across the street) and Gebr. Hartering (new dutch) I'd have to encourage you to choose Gebr. Hartering.

Yelp
Small small cute place. Friendly staff. Meal was a touch 'meh' which was disappointing. I don't know why. It was all good but I wanted to be blown away. That said, it's all solid farm to tableish food and they were happy to meet my one diet restriction and were happy to accommodate. I'd go back and see if I just hit an off night - or go back if I wanted a unfussy meal at a bit of a high price.
google avatar

Dominic T.

Yelp
Great restaurant but be prepared for a very long meal. Don't book before 8pm as if you do they will work you into the tasting menu with others around 8:30ish. Good food, Dutch is not known as a great culinary experience but they've done a solid job.

Yelp
OK - I love this place. I must admit my opinion might be slightly influenced by the fact that many happy memories were made in this restaurant. My partner and I had our second date here a few years ago and have gone back every time we had something to celebrate. Having said that, this place itself is sure to create some happy memories, too. It all starts with the decor: it is light, no- nonsense yet welcoming. Somehow they have managed the right balance between candlelight and electric, allowing you to feel comfortable with either your business associates, your friends, your in-laws or your (second) date. The menu is also easy: your only choice is how many courses you want. Each course is served "family style". Don't be mislead though: the food it self is nowhere near family style. Gebr. Hartering somehow always manages to serve the unexpected. Vegetables you forgot about, meats you never knew could taste this good. Dinner is served in one seating, starting at 8 pm. You may come earlier and have a bit of an appetiser with oysters or charcuterie. A meal at Gebr. Hartering does not come cheap. Expect to pay around € 100 per person. Minimum. Tip: if you are going for a romantic dinner, ask for the small and more private table in front of the window. Although it is a table for 3, they will give it to you if seating arrangements allow it.

Yelp
Thank you, Anthony Bourdain. We watched The Layover - Amsterdam on the Travel Channel and saw this restaurant mentioned as a place Tony recommends. I don't think that he's always right about restaurants, but man, he was right about this one. We ordered the set menu and had a truly memorable, lovely dinner. The restaurant is very cozy and intimate, the waiter was extremely friendly and spoke perfect English, and the food was SPECTACULAR. I mean amazing. I mean seriously good. If this restaurant was in Chicago, there would be a line out the door every single night. The fact that this restaurant isn't more packed is, frankly, astounding.

Yelp
We really like Gebr Hartering, we've been twice and managed to get comfy seats in the small downstairs area. It's not a cheap (nor a small) meal. Between 6-7 courses and the service sometimes is 'Dutch Frosty'. But it's such a nice way to spend a long dinner and they have really good wine. It's a place to settle in for 3 hours and just indulge and relax. The style is French/Dutch modern, if that means anything. More at: http://www.eatacity.com/guide/Amsterdam/place/gebr-hartering/

Yelp
Everything is different... I saw the light!! I TAKE IT BACK!! I'm sorry... You guys are freakin' amazing!!! I'm a naughty Yelper... Bad! Bad! (I'm hitting my hand, yes i am) So, I thought I had reviewed and renewed my yelp review before. And I should have!! I've been here over 8 times...!! Only the first time was not a 5STARFOODFEST!! Oh dear... The Yelp god should have de-elited me. This is one of my 3 favourite restaurants in town, the only (ONLY) restaurant I send business related "friends" and the only restaurant that has made me tingle of excitement when reserving a table...and moan and grunt over amazing meat and wine (0.5 glass...shut up!!) while pregnant. We love going for the meat. And the fish. And the beautiful things they do to leek. And the wine. Believe me: you can't find that meat nor wine anywhere else. (I tried) I love The Brothers Hartering... Yes.

Yelp
I can't imagine a more perfect evening! I love fine dining- French Laundry and Chez Panisse have been some of my top dining experiences, but this place ranks right up there. First, I got to eat in a boat, on a canal!!!! How many times in your life do you get to eat a fabulous world class meal in a boat? I've never had that option- until now. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu- would have liked to do 7, but I just didn't think I could eat that much (turned out I could not have). We started with an interesting amuse bouche- kohlrabi and miso paste. Really good! Then we moved on to a mackerel arranged salad with pickled cucumber. mmmmmm.... delicious. And the bread! Served with Normandy butter! It was wonderful. Second, was a stracciatella buffalo mozzarella with sea lavender, broad beans, nasturtiums, and toasted bread. Next- my favorite- grilled octopus on potato salad. I SWEAR, it tasted like lobster- really good lobster. Finally, the main course- pork neck. Oh my goodness- so tasty! Like pork belly- but better. I've never had this before, but I hope I get the chance to have it again. I think this was grilled as well. It was so juicy and tender. And the sauce- so good. It was served with tiny potatoes from the North of Holland. Finally our dessert was peach melba- delicious- and thank God it was small, because by this time I was not sure I could eat another bite (we did go through 3 baskets of bread, though- ah, the bread! I could not get enough. I did the same thing at the French laundry- I'm sure they thought I was insane, but that bread and butter was just so darn good! It's like that here!) We ordered sparkling water and pinot grigio (25 Euro a bottle) to drink-and the pinot was lovely with the seafood. It was apply, and fresh- and since it was warm on the water, it was a perfect wine for the evening. Go here. Eat in the boat if you can. I have a slight disability (though can manage stairs if I am careful)- and this IS downstairs- but if you eat in the boat you're on the same level as the bathrooms!- which are lovely. If you have difficulty with stairs, you could eat at street level- but you'll have trouble using the bathrooms. Also loved the real towels in the bathroom- quite a nice touch. Is the meal expensive? It was 55 euro each for the 5 course, and then with the wine (we had 2 bottles) as well as 2 bottles of sparkling water (there were 4 of us) our half of the bill was 140 euro. A very fair price, I thought, for a remarkable evening. The upstairs dining room can get smokey, I noted- because of the grill, but there is outside dining on the sidewalk- which looked very nice. If you don't eat in the boat, you might eat there- if it is not raining. Our server was kind and helpful, and utterly charming. I wish I could eat here all the time- but, alas, I live half a world away. Please enjoy it for me.

Yelp
Five-meal course is enough for a moderately hungry couple. You won't be stuffed after the meal, but will be very satisfied. Also, make sure that you book your reservation not later than 7:30pm when you choose 5 or 7 meal course, otherwise you'll be eating your main dish around 10pm. Everything from start to finish was very well executed. Let's start from the beginning when I was trying to make a last minute reservation: As expected they were fully booked and was told they'd let me know if any cancellation happens. Few hours later they called and I got a spot at 7pm. I was also asked about any food restriction or allergy so they could accommodate my needs. Scored a point here. I'm very sensitive to noises and I get really annoyed when the background music is loud - sometimes I just leave the place- Background music was fine when I arrived but when your table is located on the corner, the volume changes substantially and noise sensitive people get really frustrated with that. I asked our incredible waiter if he could turn the volume down a little bit and he was more than happy to do that -one more big point just because of this- At first, I didn't have any high expectation about this restaurant, and thought It'd be one more regular over priced meal in a touristy city, specially after King's day holiday. This started changing very quickly. Dutch menu only, so our waiter -this very awesome guy- explained how the meal course worked and again made sure to serve me gluten free meals. We had few glasses of wine and this waiter left us the bottle so we could finish that with no extra charges. (2 points) I usually skip desserts at restaurants when dinning near home, I prefer my local gelato place or don't eat it when I'm traveling, but dessert was part of the pack so why not.. Dessert was salted caramel ice cream with roasted macadamias... so I started eating it without much expectation because it is just an ice cream, not from my local fresh made gelato place also my least favorite flavor so it'd be regular. I'm an gelato/ice cream snob ( very snob) and I'm proud of it ( don't judge). First bite: Holy s***, this mtf ice cream was fresh made and took me to heaven and back twice just in the first spoon. Salted caramel now is on my list because of them. Of course, milk quality in Europe has a superior quality if compared to what we have in the US, I guess this makes a difference. Asked the waiter to give my compliments to whoever made that ice cream... asked for our bill, and it came with an extra bowl of salted caramel ice cream...ding ding ding one goal after the other like the Dutches did with Brazil in 2010 World Cup and this time I didn't mind. Quick note on food served: You won't be disappointed, it's delicious, and if you ask, they'll tell you how they prepared each dish.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place!! Delicious food, the chef came out to serve and explained the food ingredients. Dinner outside on the boat was a moment to die for, I wish I lived in Amsterdam so I can go there more often. I will definitely be going back.

Yelp
My favorite fine dining restaurant in Amsterdam. Nothing else really needs to be said. 5 stars across the board. If you are visiting Amsterdam and have some budget to splurge on an unforgettable meal, book it!

Yelp
I loved, loved, loved the food at this place but the service is pretty gruff and amateurish. The table wobbled, the waiter keep bumping into me when serving other customers and we waited ages between courses. They never explained the menu. The wine by the glass is awful, it's basically cheap supermarket wine. Order a beer, is my advice. Okay, now back to the food. We opted for the 9 course meal, and all of the courses were excellent except the pork belly which was tough and greasy. The prime rib was about the best I've ever had anywhere. They are very proud of their meats here. They bring the raw cut around to show it off before you order. The fresh baked breads and deserts were great. We opted for oysters at the beginning of the meal and found them a little too salty. This is a small resurant with just nine tables. There is no excuse for the poor service and wine at these prices!

Yelp
The restaurant is intimate, aromatic, and energetic. The menu primarily features five to seven courses; a la carte options are available. The prices are not low, but the food is worth it. The preparations are fresh and creative, and the portions are respectable. The menu changes regularly, and local ingredients are valued. The menu is in Dutch, but the waiters speak good English. You are allowed to take plenty of time to enjoy your meal. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in Amsterdam who is looking for high quality food and is not on a tight budget.

Yelp
Fantastic butchers who serve up the cuts of meat to highlight the best parts. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Service is outstanding!

Yelp
My colleague and I had the most perfect dinner! We opted for the 5 course menu knowing only that it would be 3 shared apps, a main course each, and dessert. Rudolf, the best waiter ever, simply asked what foods we were averse to and he took it from there. We added an oysters appetizer and from the start we were in heaven! Cava, wine, dessert wine, lovely dishes, and practically private dining on the lower level made for a perfect evening. Highly recommend! Make sure to ask your waiter for recommendations. Super knowledgeable with amazing origin stories for each dish as well. We wish he could've joined us!

Yelp
We first heard of this place after watching The Getaway on the Esquire Network, and I must say we were not at all disappointed! We had the 9 course menu and the food was fresh and delicious. The restaurant is super cozy and bright and provides the perfect quintessential Dutch backdrop for a wonderful meal. We'll definitely return for a special occasion.

Yelp
Amazing. Potentially the best meal I've ever eaten. I don't know if our waiter was one of the brothers or what, but he was very knowledgeable about wine and about the food. There was no rush to hurry and eat (I love European dining), and every dish was delicious and beautifully plated. And it wasn't nearly as expensive as some of the Michelin starred restaurants I've been to, but I would actually rate the food here as better than any of those restaurants. I was in town for 3 days, and I thought about going back a second time.

Yelp
Wow. I was so excited to try this place. Food was below average. Service was great, but our unhappiness with the food was met by a stone faced chef. Maybe they take care of the locals better than tourists. Lamb was fatty, fish overdone, nothing removed from the check. Never coming back even if someone else was buying.

Yelp
Fantastic meal. We spent 3 hours on their seven course option and enjoyed every moment.

Yelp
Was in the top 3 meals had during 10 nights in Europe. Had the best gin and tonic I've ever had. Lack of adequate A/C will be an issue for those more accustomed to tourist traps. Be prepared to dinning for several HOURS & the service unpretentious and honest. Our server went out of his way to set our experiance apart. The "off the menu" mushroom substatute was one of the best flavors ever. Will revisit next time in town.

Yelp
Bliss. The restaurant is so cute, 10 minutes walk from the Central Station, on the edge of a canal, view of a drawbridge from the big windows. They have even installed a boat on the canal next to it with a large table, presumably for large parties. The restaurant is cozy. But oh my god, the food is fantastic. They do a set menu (you can order a la carte if you have time constraints, the dinner takes 2 and a half hours, starting at 8 pm). We had (1) grilled red peppers with fried capers, (2) grilled octopus on a salad of fennel with flecks of chili, (3) seabass, mashed potatoes, morels, (4) grilled lamb innards with lamb shoulder, (5) some insanely beautiful rare beef, not sure how the cut translates, and we opted for the optional addition of roasted marrow bones. After all of this, we couldn't eat our dessert and opted for some of their huge selection of genever instead. Every course was fantastic, optimally cooked to get the best flavor. The marrow with the beef was stunning. We completely cleaned every plate. The food is beautiful, tasty, using local, fresh ingredients, and the menu is directed by the availability of the ingredients. The chef is obviously into using the all manner of cuts of meat, and using all parts of the animal, and then turning them into something amazing. Service is friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the food. The whole experience was so comfortable and delicious. And for this caliber of food and attention, exceptionally reasonable prices. I wish I lived in Amsterdam, I'd go back every week.

Yelp
Lucked out with prime rib as evening special! The smoky herb infused preparation was really interesting and the meat cooked to medium rare perfection. The service was first rate, making for a perfect last night in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Did the 5 course with wine pairings. They fit me in as a walk-in on a Thursday, despite being very busy. The leek course and the endive course (1 and 2) were absolutely amazing. Have never had leeks prepared that well. The tongue was very good as a 3rd, though I thought the pork shoulder on the 4th course was a bit over-seasoned. Dessert was well done. A great environment, friendly staff, healthy wine pours, and overall a fantastic experience.
