Brûlée - Review - Ravenswood - Chicago - The Infatuation

"TheSouth Loophas a new brunch spot for chicken and waffles, but this time with an emphasis on vanilla and burnt sugar. Brûlée has a namesake french toast with a sugar crust, along with not-your-average-brunch-dishes like an avocado “croast”—a croissant with calabrian chili—and a waffle with sweet potato and lobster." - Nick Allen

All-Day Brunch Restaurant Brûlée Opens in the South Loop  | Eater Chicago

"A cozy, modern all-day breakfast and brunch spot dressed in black and white with marble-and-gold flourishes, a wide bar, velvet couches, bold light fixtures, and a selfie-ready floral wall, this is chef Emani Roberts’s passion project, shaped by her Walt Disney World training and years as a sought-after event chef. Chef de cuisine Kennedy Bufford (formerly a lead line cook at the Nobu Hotel) helps steer an up-leveled comfort-food menu: fried catfish over smoked Gouda grits with a Cajun crawfish cream sauce; a showy lobster-and–sweet potato waffle crowned with fried lobster tails, salted caramel praline sauce, and vanilla cream; the Chicago-inspired Virgil Special (chicken wings or fried catfish with hot honey, plus candied yams and braised collard greens); the Michigan Avenue Breakfast (two eggs any style with breakfast meat, potatoes or grits, and a honey butter biscuit or whole grain toast); plus lunch options like burgers and a brisket grilled cheese. Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday with a full bar, coffee and espresso with pastries, and plans to host private events in the evenings, it aims to make guests feel at home—“like you’re in grandma’s kitchen”—with the promise to “come hungry, leave obsessed.” Closed Wednesdays." - Patrice Yursik

Google
Strongly recommend making a reservation as it is getting busier and busier and we love this for them! The ambiance is cute, vibrant, and simple. It's the standard ambiance of some of the south side Black owned locations. The extra bonus is their "waiting" area. You won't have to stand and linger near the door waiting to be seated or wait for your party. There is a comfortable sitting area available. Let's get to why you are reading my review... the food! In one word: FLAVORFUL. Parking: metered.

Great atmosphere. Nice server. Lots of waiting. We sat down and gave our entire order (because we had waited for a while to be sat- we should have made a reservation), and our food took 30+ min to get our food. Food was very good though.

Ordered the shrimp and grits plus half an order of the brulee French toast. My wife got the chicken and waffles. She would have preferred chicken breast to the wings but was overall very happy with it. Shrimp and grits were great although I could have gone for slightly spicier. Brulee French toast was very decadent and was the best dish, although we're usually more savory food people so probably wouldn't get only that. Prices are reasonable all things considered and a gorgeous space.

Walked in on Grand Opening Day. Party of 4. We were seated in about 5-10 minutes. Chanell was our server. She gave some excellent recommendations on what we should get. 3 of us got chicken and waffles (a hit). 1 person got the Brisket Grilled Cheese which I’ll be back to try. Food was delicious. Nelly was our busser cool dude. The manager Nia came out and chatted with us. Asked if we had any suggestions on improvement. No complaints.

This place is decently busy for a brand new open. Love that it’s black woman operated. The food is fresh, comes out hot, and expertly seasoned. I ordered the avocado croast and the Michigan Ave breakfast 1) Avocado Croast: Supposed to be avocado toast on a croissant. No croissant to be seen. But it is EXCELLENT flavoring. But It is not on a croissant so I was a little said. But like I said the flavor of it was excellent especially with the faint undertone of heat from the spicy tomatoes was phenomenal. The avo was very fresh and I can tell because I wasn’t itchy after eating it. Healthy portion. 2) Michigan Ave breakfast: SOLID classic breakfast. Big portions. The back. Has great flavor and was crispy which is how I prefer bacon. The eggs were cooked well and the potatoes were really good and seasoned well. All hot when it came out. That biscuit was delicious. Soft buttery with honey butter on top. The music was a little loud but it wasn’t intrusive. Price wise it is in line with what you’d expect to pay for chicago brunch. Coffee was just ok for me. The service was good, friendly but not intrusive. We needed a place like this in south loop. Will definitely be back!

First of all, the entire staff is so friendly & nice. Every one of them!!! From chef Emani to the waiters, Chanell & Darius, to those working at the bar or busy doing others things, Every single one greeted us with a big smile! Ambience is nice! Kool! Grown & elegant. Now the food???? Listen!!!! Everything was delicious!!! Great fried catfish, Chicken wings, greens, sweet potatoes!! And that mac n cheese is the best Mac n cheese I’ve had at any restaurant, including soul food restaurants. Hands down! And being the foodie that I am, I’ve been to many! This was some good eating!!! I will most definitely be back!!! I know they just opened as a brunch restaurant, but I’m looking forward to them maybe being opened at night. A 10/10!!! I highly recommend!!

Google
I want to first shout out my server Darius. My mans was WORKING. He had a few tables but he did everything to make sure everyone was decent. Any challenges (which we definitely had a couple), he had it handled quick. Much respect to him. You can tell he takes pride in his work. The food was ok-decent. Wasn’t a fan of the portion size of the catfish for the price but it was alright. Taking a bite of catfish + grits + sauce was top tier, can’t even lie. The owner was moving around asking if the customers were all good which I thought was a pretty cool. Pretty good experience. Can’t be too critical because they just opened yesterday. Definitely room for improvement as far as the flow of the restaurant, but that should come with time. Especially with a proactive owner. But once again, Darius and some help with Cash helped out. Will come back, interested to see what they will end up becoming. Hope it’s great!

Google
If you like eating breakfast in a nail salon then this is the place for you. There was NO COFFEE, no cutlery, and a 45-50 minute wait to get our breakfast. Over staffed and over priced. The owners / management need to take a long hard look at the planning and customer experience. We had high expectations but left feeling disappointed and hungry.

Yelp
First time at Brûlée and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is friendly and warm. We are from the south and these were the best grits we have ever had. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. The pancakes were light and fluffy. Noel was our waiter and was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. Will definitely be back

Yelp
Decided to give this place a chance because it was so close to our hotel. It was amazing! Good ambiance and friendly staff, with amazing food. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits. It was the perfect start to a long work day.

Yelp
I sat at the bar and was given excellent service. I ordered something that's not suppose to be on the menu but the chef made it for me fresh. I wouldn't order the mocktail again only because of the price. Everything I ate was pretty tasty, except the macaroni and yams. I think the price for the portion size of mac was small. The yams tasted better than they looked 6.5/10. The fried chicken had a hot honey sauce that was AMAZING. I would definitely go back and try more things. The menu is reasonably priced. The ambiance of the restaurant is bright and the music is just the right volume to where you can still talk to those sitting around you. I was a little skeptical because it's a new restaurant but I will be back.

Yelp
Highly recommend the food as it is delicious but the drinks were not good or strong enough for $20 and they do need to iron out kinks on the waiting period even though the staff was kind and respectful there still was a long wait period other than that I would recommend this place for brunch just maybe during the week when it's not as packed.

Yelp
Glad to see a new restaurant Brûlée in the neighborhood. It's beautifully decorated, has some nice R&B playing in the background. They have a great selection of food. We had an early brunch on Sunday. The service was fantastic. The food was delicious. We had the Avocado Croast and Shrimp and Grits. Both were well made, deliciously seasoned. Will definitely be back again.

Yelp
Hey! This used to be Crab Bucket, remember that! This is from a well known private Chef Imani Roberts. I had the Five Cheese Mac & Cheese. The staff and service are bruleeriffic.

Yelp
Walked into brûlée on Michigan Ave in the south loop. The atmosphere was great for an early Sunday morning. Couple tv by the bar and good amount of bears fans anticipating the game. Seated very quickly and scanned the menu. All the choices looked amazing. Landed up on the chicken and waffles and side of French toast. I must say fantastic, the flavor on the chicken was delicious and the French toast was so good wish it was a full order. I cannot wait to go back and try everything else on the menu. The perfect breakfast/brunch spot in the south loop!

Yelp
We ordered the lobster and sweet potatoe waffle and it was the best decision we made for brunch. The caramel sauce and vanilla cream really accentuated the taste of the waffle. Service was good and our server suggested the hot chocolate with Baileys which topped off our great tasting brunch.

Nikki M.

Yelp
I had the lobster and sweet potato waffles, grits and eggs as a side. The food was Excellent, the service was great and the atmosphere was nice and lively. It was 100% booked up so definitely make a reservation!

Chris L.

Yelp
Not there, food to value ratio. Live in the neighborhood and was excited to try a new place. Brisket sandwiches was overall ok,but nothing special and missing the lean to fat ratio. Moreover, it is hard to justify 24$ price for the brunch portion. I know everything is more expensive now a days but I don't think it is a good value for the price

Yelp
Grateful for this unique addition to the South Loop! Came for breakfast and tried the catfish and grits, biscuit and gumbo. All were very good. The gumbo stands out to me- very flavorful and rich. The staff on hand were all very friendly. Looking forward to returning to try some of the other menu items. Welcome to the neighborhood, Brulee.

Yelp
Hello everyone. I dine out often and for today's dining experience I had to write a review. Everything from the decor to the drinks and food was amazing. I started with the Burlee Espresso Martini which hands down is the best Espresso Martini I have ever had. The entire menu looked appetizing so needless to say I ordered a few dishes. The Creole Shrimp & Grits were to die for a long with the Chicken & Waffles and a cup of Gumbo to boost. I highly recommend and will definitely be a regular patron.
