17 Essential Barbecue Restaurants in and Around Boston

"Plan a little road trip 60 miles southwest of Boston to Sturbridge: B.T.’s Smokehouse is a worthy destination, featuring meats slow-smoked over apple and hickory, available in sandwiches, platters with sides and cornbread, and more. Watch for dishes like andouille dog bites and sticky rib tips, too. (Near Worcester? Check out the restaurant’s younger sibling, B.T.’s Fried Chicken & BBQ, which also features fried chicken, as the name suggests.)" - Valerie Li Stack, Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Every New England Road Trip Requires a BBQ Plate From B.T.'s Smokehouse | Bon Appétit

"B.T.'s Smokehouse, an unassuming roadside restaurant serving some of the best barbecue I've ever eaten, despite being in a region that’s, well, not known for barbecue. Situated between I-84 and I-90, B.T.’s is an ideal pit stop for any drive that takes you up to (or down from) Boston, New Hampshire, or Maine. Brisket is the thing here—smoked for 24 to 30 hours on local apple and hickory wood. You can order it à la carte, in a Reuben-style sandwich, or—my favorite—on a platter with classic sides like collard greens and mac and cheese." - ByAmanda Shapiro

Google
Some really good BBQ. If I had a complaint it was two fold. 1. The platter comes with one pound of meat in reality it was closer to 1kgs. Lots of meat. The second and serious one is the wait time. For the three platters it was over 30 minutes. It was rather busy but wow it took forever. All in all it was very good

If you’re driving between Boston and NYC, BT’s Smokehouse is a must-stop for BBQ. The ribs were outstanding—some of the best I’ve had—juicy, tender, and full of flavor. The chicken and pulled pork were also solid, packed with smoky goodness. Paired with rice, black beans, and carrots, the meal was hearty and satisfying. Conveniently located midway between the two cities, it’s the perfect stop for a BBQ fix. Highly recommend!

Google
The best barbecue in New England! Amazing brisket and pulled pork. We had the hot dog special with slaw and it was amazing. Highly recommended with some TreeHouse brews!

Google
Great food, the smells are awesome menu is large and varied. The line moves quickly and don't be put off but phone ordered take outs will walk to the front of the line and have priority over those waiting in person to dine in, or order in and carry out. Try the varied sauces on the table, there all good.

Listen. I’m from the south, and BT’s is as close to good old fashioned home cooked BBQ as I’ve found this side of the mason dixon line. I make a detour whenever heading up country to visit Bts, and they never disappoint. Truly a must-visit. They have a true reverence for BBQ and for making meat taste exquisite.

Google
I was a bit disappointed in the platter I ordered - small size for the price and half of the brisket was fat. I think the Ruben looked a better and a more generous portion.

Google
Was very excited to try this place after hearing really good things about it only to be completely disappointed by both the food and the service. The line to order was about half an hour which wasn't too bad, the issue was it took about an hour and forty five minutes to get our food. When the food was finally ready it was honestly shocking how bad it was. The coleslaw was inedible, tasted like they dumped a whole bottle of vinegar into my little cup. When it came to the fries, it was more a serving of cajun with a side of fries, they were absolutely coated to the point where you couldn't even taste potato. The pulled pork tasted like propane on some bites and others it was just extremely mediocre, not too bad but definitely not good either. The brisket was also very middle of the line, it was very tender which was nice but on the other hand it was dry and lacking flavor. Overall I left just sad, I came expecting some good BBQ and left dissatisfied and still hungry.

Google
B.T.'s is the best! They are one of if not the most consistent restaurant I've ever eaten at. We stop by on the way home every year after attending an event. This was year 6 and it was 10/10 as always. Most of the staff has been the same every year I go back. They take pride in what they do. I have had BBQ in Texas, KC, and Nashville B.T.'s is better. Everything is good. Busy times can have long wait times so go early or just wait, it's worth it every time. Added bonus is it's BYOB if you like and Treehouse is just down the road! Nothing but great things to say about B.T.'s!

Yelp
I was excited about this one. It has been on my radar for some time and I found myself in the area so there was no better time to try it out. Got here around 4:00pm, slammed. It's not a huge space, modest, I'd say about 10 tables plus seating at a bar top overlooking the experts at work behind the counter. Every table was full. I walked into a line that they got moving pretty swiftly. Before putting my order in I was told it'd be about 30 minutes til I got my food. Initial reaction was "dang, they have that many orders in the queue? This place must be the real deal". No problem, put my order in for a 2 meat platter with Brisket, smoked chicken, black eyed peas and collard greens with cornbread on the side $25 after tax and tip. Solid deal if I get a good amount of meat I thought. While waiting I took a little walk. Behind the restaurant there is a paved path up to a couple softball fields and an elementary school. Nice little spot with a couple playgrounds for kids and a post-meal stroll after you're filled to the brim with bbq (some foreshadowing there). I finally get back and almost 30 minutes after I ordered, to the minute, I had my name called for my food. A thick, 3/4" slab and 12" long slab of juicy delicious brisket with a off-cut from the point/burnt ends edge of the brisket (wasn't actually burnt ends but probably a slice in from that) was staring me in the face. This was topped over a mound of smoked chicken, must have been 1/2-3/4lb. I don't normally get smoked chicken at bbq joints but I wanted something a little less rich to go with my brisket and I had already eaten a little while earlier that afternoon (small overpriced meal from a food truck at tree house but that's a different story for another review). The brisket was freaking delicious. I have finally had delicious brisket. I never understood what the lure was. It was always good but never blew me away. This opened my eyes. I LOVED It. Now, I've never been to Texas, or the Carolina's or any other bbq destinations.. But this bbq is way above and beyond anything else I've ever had in New England by a wide margin. The chicken was delicious. How in earth are you able to keep it so moist and get so much smoke flavor on there BT's? I need to know. The unsung heroes of bbq, the sides. The black eyed peas were great. Exactly what I wanted. Simple, fresh, and delicious with some fresh tomato, green pepper and well seasoned. The collards were nothing to scoff at either. I've had some bad collards. Some mush, some too tough, some over salted.. These were quite perfect. Tender, delicious and had small bits of chopped meat in them. Seemed like pork? So good. Even the cornbread was solid. No sauce necessary on this, but all their sauces were delicious. Nothing overly fancy, just good wholesome sauces. Also, don't sleep on the pickled vegetables. You can help yourself to as many pickled habanero carrots, pickled red onion or pickled jalapeño's as you want. They are up to the right of the counter where you order. Will absolutely be back here. Not sure if he was the owner but l overheard an employee call out to the guy manning the chopping block, Spencer. Seeing this man slice through 10 perfectly cooked briskets while I was sitting there at the bar top while waiting for and enjoying my meal was a sight. Maybe I like smoked meats too much, maybe I'm a little crazy. But if that sight is what crazy looks like and the taste of that food is what crazy tastes like, I'm okay with being crazy. Spencer, thank you and your team for the wonderful meal.

Yelp
The overall experience was very good. Minus the poor seating the overall atmosphere and ambiance was impressive. The sounds and smells were on point. I was very excited when I first walked into the place. First impressions was very high. We both got the 3 meats and a multitude of sides. I was disappointed that there was no spicy chop, nor sausages. I was told the pulled pork and chicken were a gotta try. I also ordered the brisket. Overall the meat was good. I found the pulled pork to be very dry and needed bbq sauce to chase down. Overall - Texas has nothing to worry about. I did ask the guy behind the counter if they ever competed down south - he said nope. I suggested they go down there are check it out. I found the experience very positive. The food was good, just not Texas good. I will be back and stick with the brisket.

Yelp
Seeing the sign for BT's Smokehouse, I spontaneously decided to pull off the highway on the way to Boston for a night out and was not disappointed! The staff was super friendly, and stepping into the joint, everything smelled delicious. I love the decor, too, because you can tell just how much the food they're making means to them, and that's exactly the kind of restaurant I want to spend my money at. The menu was overwhelming in a good way because I wanted to try so many different things that it was really hard to settle on just one, but I ended up with the two meat platter, and I gotta say, the flavors were all on point. The brisket was so buttery that I couldn't even pick it up with a fork because it kept falling apart (which is a great thing if you've had brisket before). The fried chicken was slightly burnt, maybe because the oil temp was a little too high, but it was still really juicy. The mac and cheese was creamy and velvety and not overly seasoned, which made it perfect to try with all six different BBQ sauces provided at the table! The sweet BBQ was the best imo. The cornbread was perfect too. The coleslaw seemed more vinegary and acidic than the mayo-based ones I'm used to, more like one you find on a chicken sandwich than one you can just eat on its own, but it was perfect to cut through the flavors of the rest of the platter. I highly recommend the platter over getting just one meat to have that full experience, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu here!

Yelp
The food here is nothing short of extraordinary! I can't get enough of the Dino beef ribs, a true gem that's incredibly hard to find in this region. They are succulent and bursting with flavor! The brisket was tender and delicious, making each bite a delight. One of the best aspects of this place is the freedom to bring your beer, allowing for a personalized dining experience. The service is swift, and the charming ambiance creates a cozy yet lively atmosphere. This spot is a local favorite, always buzzing with energy!

Yelp
Went up to Treehouse and found them on our way out. They are BYOB so grab a Julius and head over. Decent seating inside and the line moves quick. Mac N Cheese was better tasting than it looked. IT looked bland but was packed with great flavor! I opted for the brisket and the slice i got was as big as a steak! The bark had so much flavor in it i could eat that all day.

Yelp
This place still has the best briskets I have had in my life. There are several condiments I went crazy over. They had some vinegar carrots, onions that were fermented, and jalapeños. All really added to the meal. They also have a ton of sauces on the counter to choose from (all of which were pretty amazing to try out). The best part about the brisket was how it was so juicy and tender. It was cooked perfectly. We also ended up getting the pork ribs which weren't as good. The pork ribs didn't have tender meats around the bone.

Yelp
It starts when you get out of your car. The smoky smell alerts the mind that there's something special going on here. The staff know their craft. Clear direction and explanation on the meats, sides and preparation techniques were shared freely. Wonderful people. The food? Yikes. I had brisket and pulled pork with grits and collards. Sublime. Come here, partake and thank the kind folks that make magic happen!

Yelp
You can't go wrong with smokehouse food. We ordered the 3 meat platter with 2 sides: Brisket, a pulled pork, ribs with Mac n cheese, coleslaw and cornbread. Everything was melt in your mouth amazing. Brisket was by far my favorite. BYOB and limited seating but they don't allow "table hogs".

Yelp
Who would have thought...some of the best bbq hiding out in parts of rural Mass. Took bit for the food to come out and forget getting an Uber back to the hotel after sun down but it was worth the walk.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot! I came here on my way home from Connecticut! As I've said in previous reviews I don't always come out for bbq because I enjoy making it at home more but when I do I hope it's a good experience and B.T.s lived up to that! The service was fast and good! And the ambiance was fun and felt like the typical bbq spot vibe for this area in my opinion!

Yelp
Stopped by on a whim based on reviews. Little place. Great food-pulled pork was awesome and the sauces were delicious.

Yelp
Please come to Hingham MA... Zero competition for BBQ ... You would be all alone. I am from Syracuse , home of Dinosaur BBQ , simply cannot find anything in a reasonable drive

Yelp
Where to begin? BT's has been on my food bucket list when a friend mentioned it this summer, and research unveiled all kinds of accolades, including best bbq in Mass. So, driving 100 miles RT didn't faze me. Smallish parking lot which was nearly full, plus an Arnold's Meat Products truck (they have a great rep). I ordered my bbq "go-to", a brisket platter w 2 sides (opted for the sexy grits and bbq beans). Also comes w a small rectangle of nondescript cornbread. While waiting, I sampled some complimentary habanero carrot coins (spicy, and I think I blew a gasket between my esophagus and stomach). Parked my butt at the lone vacant table. After a short wait, heard my name and picked up my metal tray and plastic utensils. The sexy grits were so awesome I wished I could have a private room and some "alone time" with them. They had a hint of a kick to them, and were really smooth. The beans were unusual... small black beans in a very watery liquid. Ok, but not what I was expecting. Probably not something I would order again. The reason for the low rating was the brisket. I estimate the amount of fat at 25 to 30% of the total. Take a look at the picture of what I cut away. And I didn't cut it all. Luckily, my annual "wellness" exam is almost 3 weeks away, and I expect my triglyceride level to be back to somewhat normal levels by then. If you look at my review history, I almost always rate places as a 4 or a 5. This is because I try to patronize places that are highly recommended. In retrospect, I should have asked for the manager, and asked if this amount of fat was normal. Would I go back? If I was in the area, I'd give it another try (the grits were def sexy, and the brisket "meat" was very tender). Would I drive 100+ miles? No way. 2.5 stars

Yelp
I'm going to preface this by saying I spent a large part of my life living in North Carolina and Mississippi, so I've eaten a lot of BBQ in my life. The brisket at B.T.'s was probably the most tender brisket I've ever had in my life. The plastic fork cut through it like butter. The rub was so good, and the meat was the perfect amount of smokey. The greens were equally as well done (a side that is often butchered). Salty, just enough sour notes. Truly phenomenal. The people working couldn't have been nicer or more excited about the food. Love the whole feel of this place. I'll be returning!
google avatar

Yelp
The food is absolutely amazing. The beef brisket melts in your mouth like butter. Best macaroni & cheese I've ever had. The bacon bites are tangy and very tasty. The smoked pulled chicken is also amazing. It's definitely worth the trip & definitely worth the wait. Weekdays aren't as busy. So there really isn't a wait. I love going there. Best BBQ I've ever had. Go there and try it. You'll agree. Enjoy BT Smokehouse is the best!

Yelp
You see the rating & it's well deserved. I had never been here before but my friend had & suggested it on our drive back home. From the rustic feel on the inside, to seeing the smoker on the side outside, it had a smokehouse feel. Looking at the menu, they had ribs, brisket & pulled pork just to name a few. I wanted to try the brisket & pulled pork & my friend had a platter with a little bit of everything. For our sides we had mac & cheese, grits, bbq beans, dirty rice & potato salad. Once we got our food it looked delicious with generous portions. The brisket was amazing! It was juicy, tender & cooked perfectly. It was my favorite! The pulled pork was also very good. I tried my friend's ribs & they were good too. The mac & cheese was cheesy & good, although I do prefer my mac & cheese baked. The potato salad was also fine. BBQ isn't in my top 3 of preferred cuisine, however the food here at B.T Smokehouse might've got it a little higher.

Yelp
This BBQ place is hands down the best brisket I have ever had! Small but super cozy place. The customer service is friendly and quick! A must ... especially if you are visiting Treehouse Brewery down the road

Yelp
We ordered delivery from here for our rehearsal dinner. We got ¼ pan of pulled pork, smoked beef brisket, pork ribs, Mac N' Cheese, baked beans, corn bread, and slaw and damn it was A LOT of food. We should have definitely scaled back for only having about 20 people present. The meats were all delicious and the Mac and cheese was by far the favorite side. My one qualm was the baked beans were definitely not baked beans, they were black beans. This was really upsetting because we ordered the baked beans specifically for me because I loved baked beans, and I hate black beans :( Everyone was confused as to why these beans were served with BBQ as they were definitely more the type of beans to be served with Mexican food.

Yelp
The food is good. I come about once a year BUT $25 a bone for beef ribs is outrageous!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Gloria H.

Yelp
We stopped by BT's on a road trip and it was packed around noon on a Saturday. We were able to order quickly and waited around 30-40 minutes for food. We got the 3 meat barbecue platter, which came out to $33 with tax ($28 with +$2 for brisket, ribs). It was ginormous and was enough meat for at least 4 meals. My favorite meat was the smoked chicken, which had great flavor and was quite tender. The ribs were also quite good, with good smoky flavor. I didn't like the brisket much, as most of what we got was pretty tough. All of the meats are very heavily flavored -- very salty, even for me. For the sides, we chose collard greens and BBQ beans in addition to the cornbread that came with the platter. The collard greens had great flavor (and also meat, haha), though they were on the saltier side. The beans had a bit of sweetness. I really liked the cornbread, as it was the only item providing some relief from the salt overload from all of the other items. I would probably get another cornbread next time. Overall this was quite a memorable experience. The prices were quite reasonable for the portion size. The brisket was a disappointment, but everything else was quite good (if salty). I would definitely get the smoked chicken again!

Yelp
great prices and great bbq! The best bbq in the area! Service is great and it's byob which is always nice!!

Yelp
Our party of three visited this restaurant after a trip to Treehouse Brewery down the road. The restaurant is very small with limited parking options. However, its popularity is evident from the line extending out the door. We arrived around 4 PM on a Sunday and ordered an assortment of brisket, ribs, and chicken. It took over an hour for us to get our food after placing our order. Overall, the ribs and brisket were the favorites at our table. They also offered an intriguing variety of sauces, from vinegar-based hot sauce to tangy mustard, for dipping. The meat was so well-cooked and flavorful that it didn't need any additional sauce. We also ordered a variety of sides, which were decent but nothing spectacular. Despite the wait, we would definitely come back for the brisket and ribs, but we might try to visit at a different time when there's less of a wait or consider ordering ahead for pickup.

Yelp
Recommended: Highly, for barbecue lovers and anyone seeking a top-notch BBQ experience. Overall: A standout destination for authentic, flavor-packed barbecue. Snapshot: Food: 5/5 Drink: BYOB (so 5/5) Vibe: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Value: 5/5 ‍‍ Family-Friendly: NA Highlights: Perfect For: Indulging in some of the best BBQ dishes around Don't Miss: The brisket, but don't sleep on the cucumber salad Bonus Tip: the brownie is a surprising hit, especially at the price point All The Details: Long overdue review for my favorite barbecue on the East Coast: BT's Smokehouse is a haven for BBQ enthusiasts. Every visit here reaffirms why it's regarded as one of the best places for barbecue. The smoked meats are the real stars, each prepared with care and expertise that's evident in every bite. Whether you're a fan of brisket, ribs, or pulled pork, you'll find something to love here. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a top-notch BBQ joint - casual and inviting, with an aroma that lets you know you're in for a treat. The staff are friendly and passionate about their craft, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. It is worth noting that at busy times the wait can get long-pro tip order online for takeout and bring it to Tree House down the road for a perfect world class food and beer pairing. The only thing better than the food itself is the value, for the quality and portion sizes of the meals the price can't be beat by anything around; add in that it's BYOB and it's a thrifty mama's dream! It's the kind of place where you leave satisfied and thinking about the meal weeks later, making it well worth the visit for anyone craving authentic, well-prepared barbecue. 100% a must visit and a personal favorite.

Yelp
I only wish I lived closer. I ordered a 3 meat plate. 2 fresh sides. The tray was piled high. I could only finish one pork rib. One slab of glorious brisket. And a few bites of pulled pork. My wife was so excited to finally get a taste of BTs.

Yelp
We were looking forward to trying B.T.'s, it had some good reviews, it was always busy, and on this beautiful summer day, we were able to check it out. We were surprised with the food here, and ot in a good way! It only took about 10 minutes for our order. The young man at the counter said I was all set, pointed to my bag, and I grabbed it to go. A quick peek inside revealed a brisket sandwich and a chicken plate (in a Styrofoam container). When we arrived at a picnic table at Old Sturbridge Village (a five-star venue just a few miles away), we found that B.T.'s didn't include any utensils, or barbecue sauce. The former we had in our car, the latter was unresolvable. We thought the brisket was too fatty, the chicken was dry and insufficiently tender, the fries were way too salty, and the smokey flavor was overwhelming. The flavor seemed to have an artificial taste, like it was doused with "liquid smoke", regardless we were very disappointed. We are unlikely to ever return here.

Yelp
Was on way back from Brimfield flea market and stopped in for some que. ordered the 2 meat dinner which came with corn bread, 2 sides. First of all ; the young guy handling the ordering, payments at cash register was outstanding how efficient he was, taking order , answering questions. I saw how he interacted with other customers and very professional, pleasant personality. Other employees all working diligently to get orders out as was busy. Work brisket was outstanding, ribs meaty and too much food and I got two meals from it. The Mac and cheese corkscrew macaroni was real deal Mac. Beans black beans I didn't like and never like... I forgot what they serve. I like the honey molasses beans at other cue spots. Corn bread dry and needs improvement with honey . Rate 5 stars as meats excellent. My orange cream soda by Polar was good and could have drank 4...

Yelp
Ok. First off, I NEVER expected Texas style smoked brisket in Massachusetts, much less smoked beef ribs! I compare other's smoked meat to my own and 99% are close, but not quite as good. This place absolutely NAILED the perfect smoked meat, both with seasoning and smoke flavor. The beef rib pulled away clean. Will definitely return.

Yelp
Where do I start... rolling up you know it's a place that you need to get bbq from. Small little shanty from the outside but a clearly fantastic kitchen within the walls. Ordered and sat down at the mini-bar and we got snacks from the chef. Jaw droppingly tender chicken leg and crispy-yet-tender bacon bites. We ordered a pulled pork and brisket sandwich and couldn't believe our eyes when we opened the box. Huge servings!! Don't be afraid to try out the sauces! Warning, habanero carrots are HOT and the Hellish is a MUST try if you like pickles. This is a must visit if you are in Sturbridge or even just passing through!

Scott E.

Yelp
foods great, service is terrible when busy. Get the chicken wings they are awesome. Burt ends IMHO tend to be over smoked compared to ends I've had.
google avatar

Gregory G.

Yelp
We stopped here after a friend recommended it. The food was quite good. They give good sized portions. I really liked the house sauce with my pulled pork. I tried the sexy grits, which had a little zing to it. (I liked them, but my wife didn't.). I will definitely try to get back here as it is better than the BBQ places near me in CT. The only reason I didn't give it a 5, is that we had gone down south during the summer and had unbelievable BBQ down there. This was close! Oh, and the bacon bites were awesome!

Yelp
Not sure what the hype is about. We dropped in for dinner and the guy at the counter couldn't care less to talk out the menu - being it was our first time in. Any question I asked his response was "I don't really know". The potions are HUGE - a heads up woulda been nice. The meats were good cuts but dry. The sauces don't really compliment the meats no matter how many they have on the table. Not many drink options to choose from. The Mac and cheese was flavorless. Honestly, Bear's is better.

Yelp
Great food. I am not much for Smokey taste so I went with the fried chicken. It was amazing!!! Incredibly tender with a tasty coating. It reminds me of the southern fried chicken my dad used to make in his pressure cooker. My bf had the bison burger which was huge! He loved it.

Yelp
The rating remains the same as before, but after reading my initial 2021 review, I feel the need to update. First of all, this is now on my "must visit every time I head toward New England" list, which means it is more than just slightly 5 stars. I also am not focused on poutine (if it's even on their menu), but let me tell you - their meats are unbelievably superb. Like, today, I just had a brisket sandwich. Shoved full of brisket, melt in your mouth, full of flavor. Side of battered andouille was like corn fritters but with meat inside. Dip that in the hot sauce they let me pack and bring with me, perfect. I called up at 11 AM as they opened, all my food was ready at 11:15 when I got it, and.. omg. Let me tell you about this pecan square they had. Because I ordered the brisket sandwich. I ordered the andouille side. But I wasn't sure if dessert. But then I saw it. Crispy, nutty, but melt in your mouth, sweet, sticky, luscious... this dessert called my name with a Siren song and then is still singing it hours later. Once I took a bite I couldn't put it down. Not hungry. Too much sugar. Didn't matter. Anyway. Service was very honest ("12 minutes for the meat to be ready! is that OK?") and quick. Food is 5+ stars in taste and portion and price. I absolutely love this place and they are on my must-visit list. That is as solid a 5 star review as I can provide, and hence the update!

Yelp
Stopped by today for lunch while returning to Boston from NYC. Picked up an order of hand cut fries and a brisket sandwich. Took a bite of sandwich and almost choked on the driest brisket I've ever had. I literally could barely swallow it. I'm assuming that the brisket wasn't actually cooked this dry but more likely was leftover from the day before and reheated but either way inedible and unacceptable. My choices, douse with bbq sauce or throw away. I chose to throw away. As far as the fries, perhaps they were hand cut but they were the soggiest batch of fries I have ever eaten. I will never stop here again.

Yelp
Fantastic BBQ! Any time we are nearby or potentially nearby it's added to the agenda. Friendly staff and excellent food!

Yelp
If you're a BBQ lover, B.T.'s Smokehouse is a great destination. Their sweet bbq sauce was amazing paired with anything. The sides are just as impressive: I don't easily like just anyone's mac and cheese, but theirs is spot on. They can take my money any time. Their ribs were great. Ordered a full rack. Definitely love and care in every bite. The portions are generous, the staff is warm and welcoming, and the vibe is down-to-earth yet buzzing with energy. It's clear they're passionate about what they do there, and it shows up in every meal, which is perfect when you've got a little bit of a drive ahead. B.T.'s Smokehouse is definitely worth stopping by. Glad we did. & hardly ever leave reviews.

Yelp
Maybe it is because I lived down south for a bit ... but I am not at all impressed with BT's Smokehouse. I know that seems to be not the Yelp consensus ... and I guess one could make the argument that against a place like Tennessee BBQ in Natick or Commonwealth BBQ in Worcester, BT's crushes them. But those places are pretty much terrible, so it's not like that equals fair competition as I'd call this mediocre BBQ. Overall, I find BT's meat to be overly fatty ... and it seems to have a metallic taste to it. Almost like you can taste some slight aluminum foil ... a tinny taste. I thought it might just be my taste but others I've taken there mentioned it as well. It does have a nice smoky flavour which you burp up for about 2 days after eating it ... and the bark is on point. The biggest issues: - The line system is beyond maddening ... it is absolute chaos. People are waiting around in the spot where you order. You never know who is waiting to order, who has ordered or who is waiting. The staff are super friendly and nice, but they don't generally help to keep order here. When you do get your order, there is nowhere convenient to stand, so you find yourself trying to find a little corner to hang out in while your order is being prepped. There is also not enough seating, so often you must stand at a tall counter and eat. Often I will avoid a place that is chaotic just from the sheer amount of stress ordering/pick-up causes. This is one of those places. - The sauces are terrible. Most of them are watery and all taste of vinegar. They are homemade, but honestly ... I'd prefer bottled sauce to some of them. I lived down south for many years and the sauce was so much better there ... less of a sour, vinegar forward taste. - The meat can be really good ... or really fatty. I understand that the fat is what makes the BBQ tender. However, it also sucks biting into a giant piece of jello-like fat every couple bites. The ribs are very hit or miss here ... sometimes they are meaty and done well. Other times, they taste reheated and are too chewy. The best item on the menu is the beef ribs, which only come on the menu every so often. - The sides are pretty average, given how expensive they are. Mac and cheese is the twisty macaroni in a white cheese sauce. Nothing to write home about but probably the best side on the menu. French fries taste great but imagine overseasoned french fries and multiple that by 3. Without exaggerating, often my lips tingle the next day from the amount of sugar and salt on the fries. They are homemade though. The collared greens ... bleccch. The baked beans are the worst I've ever had. Each time the beans are hard ... way too firm and they taste like they were poured from a can. Very bland. Where the menu gets good is when things are more creative and some of their specials shine. I usually only go in when I see a good special sandwich listed because the quality of the BBQ varies so drastically and between the gross sauces and the slight aluminum taste the actual BBQ is not my favourite. I know that the staff works hard here ... and the BBQ is probably better than a lot of the really bad New England BBQ elsewhere, but for me, it's a place I go back every few months and hope it magically gets better and lives up to the hype. Hoards of average-joe craft beer drinking New Englanders would probably disagree with my take. I wasn't expecting Franklin BBQ but to call this place a top 100 in the US BBQ place is quite a stretch!

Yelp
Our first time at B.T.'s Smokehouse was an exceptional experience. From Stefanie, who promptly answered our questions with a smile, to the amazing display of our food. The three meat order with two sides and cornbread was absolutely fantastic! Thank you, B.T.'s Smokehouse who delivered an exceptional experience! We will be back!

Yelp
Real deal bbq right here in Massachusetts! I've spent a lot of time in Nashville and made a pilgrimage to Franklin bbq in Austin Texas and this is the best brisket short of that. Sometimes the Q itself is good but the sides miss the mark, not here, excellent collards and bbq beans;cole slaw and soft sexy grits( there words, not mine)always a line so get ready but well worth the wait, great customer service sealed the deal. Oh and don't sleep on the dessert choices either!

Yelp
Stopped in today for lunch w/ a friend, we were both 1st Timers to B.T.'s Smokehouse in Sturbridge, Mass. My standards for BBQ are fairly high, as I spent a year living along the Tennessee / Alabama border, and consumed my share of great Q during that time. I'm often disappointed with "Northern BBQ", but I have to admit, B.T's Smokehouse could hold their own with the BBQ served in the South. We both ordered 2 meat platters, I went with brisket & pulled pork, my buddy had the smoked chicken & pulled pork. We felt the portion sizes of our platters were very generous, and we both left with full tummies. The brisket was tender with a good amount of bark, but it did have a fair amount of fat also. I can't say it was the best brisket I've ever had, but that's only because I worked down the street from a joint in Alabama that served the most incredible brisket on the planet (the owner was from Texas). But B.T.'s brisket was still pretty good. Pulled pork was decent too, as well as my friend's smoked chicken. We enjoyed all the side dishes also, we can't say we disliked anything. All in all, the Q was solid, and I would certainly come back if I was passing through the area again. My only recommendation is to get there EARLY. We were fortunate, and planned to get there when they opened at 11am. Was a good move on our part, we were served quickly and the place soon filled up not long afterwards. The only negative is that it's hard to hold a conversation, as the place is somewhat small, and they jack up the music fairly loud also.

Yelp
The pork ribs were very dry and tough! The coleslaw has some kind of weird taste. And I have eaten lots of coleslaw in my life this was the worse. The dirty rice was very dry and had no flavor. The Mac and cheese was okay a bit salty.

Yelp
We had the Brisket Reuben sandwich and it was so delicious! Read all the other reviews. They are all spot-on. This is the local go-to for the best BBQ. Tuesday at 1:30 pm so we were lucky enough to get a table. It's small but so worth it. Enjoy!

Yelp
My cousin and I were in the area and he had heard this place was good. I am from Texas and he said this was Texas style BBQ! So I said, why not? We pulled into the parking lot and it smelled heavenly! We knew we were going to have dinner in a couple of hours, so we opted for a couple of brisket sliders and some root beers! We had to wait a bit for the meat to come out of the smoker, but MAN, when they called us up to get our order...there was a TON of meat! A Texas sized serving!! Super succulant, flaky and delicous. The sauces were a bit on the vinegary and watered down side compared to what we do in TX, but a big thumbs up on the meats. My cuz purchased some extra to take home!

Yelp
I am still in the brisket. Technically I write to you from my office, over a month since my visit, but truth be told I am not here, nor am I now. I am still in the brisket. I am sitting outside on the tables on a gorgeous summer's day, hitting that sweet BBQ sauce like there's a prize for it. The brisket is in front of me and it is real and it is the greatest brisket this commonwealth has ever known. The brisket is a part of me now, and I can return whenever I please. Biding time at the bus stop for a bus that's 20 minutes late? Not me, I'm in Sturbridge, the smell of beef in the air. Waiting to be triaged at the ER? I'm only triaging how I can get this brisket into my body faster. If you're wondering why I'm smiling, it is because I am still in the brisket.

Yelp
The food is so delicious! The sizes are huge and also make amazing left overs! They are also good for people who have allergies such as celiac and or are allergic to pineapple.

Yelp
Everything was amazing EXCEPT the ribs. The staff, environment, and the food we ordered lived up to the hype. But sadly, my ribs were dry - there were a few juicy bites but mostly I was fighting with the bone and slopping on the sauce to get it down. Brisket, Mac n Cheese, fries, coleslaw, and beans = Ribs =

Yelp
Stopped to get fuel next door. Smelled bbq and saw the sign. I decided to drop in here for a quick take-out because I have to get back on the road. Anyway, I wait in line for about 5-8 people to order. I heard the lady taking the orders tell the person in front of me about the 20-minute wait. Yeah... NO. Look, I'm pretty much a bbq expert. My entire IG is practically bbq from all over the country. I've been to the best and I've been to the worst of the worst. What in the F are you doing that it takes you 20 mins to get a meat order out? Even Blacks bbq, the best in the country, doesn't even take 15 mins. There is no excuse ever that you can't get a platter out way faster. I really wish I could have posted your food on my ig but I don't have time to wait 20 mins for someone to cut a piece of meat. Get it together.

Yelp
When you walk in to a restaurant and your mouth immediately starts watering, you know you're in for a treat. This was my second time coming here. This time I brought my brother who is difficult to please. He was very satisfied! The ribs and pulled pork were seasoned very well and were perfectly tender. The sexy grits are a must. Grits aren't very popular in the northeast but these are worth the trip alone. The BYO rule doesn't hurt either.
