"This old-fashioned Upper East Side lunch counter was taken over by a Mexican proprietor, who still offers hamburgers and toasted cheese, but the menu has been built out with tacos and burritos. The taco fillings (chicken, steak, pork), are all good, and a special features two tacos sharing a plate with an order of french fries, which feels like a genius cross-cultural move. (Put the french fries inside the taco!)" - Robert Sietsema

I just went here for lunch on a whim, and I'm glad I did. Burger One has some of the of the best burgers and fries I've ever had. I ordered the New York Burger Deluxe, and I love how original the taste was for the burger and especially for the fries. The flavor wasn't nearly as copy-paste as chain fast food places. Also, the 2 people working there were friendly and fast, and the place has a nice neighborhood NY atmosphere imo.

UPDATE: These guys did and do make one of the best bacon cheeseburgers in the city!! Visited recently and it's just as good as I remember it. Amazing bacon cheeseburgers on the UES!! And quite frankly, one of the better burgers I've had in the whole city. It's tiny and very packed at lunch so either call your order in or arrive early or late. Your burger will taste better fresh off the grill if you can grab a seat at the counter but it also travels pretty well for takeaway. Give'em a try, you won't regret it.

Used to come here all the time in High School I ordered some tacos and burgers lately still exceptional, high quality HOMEmade food, I repeat Homemade, fries are delicious and I didn't feel bloated after eating, felt really good. Great vibe in the diner, the workers are always really cool and nice. One of the few great places on the Upper East Side.

Love this place. I go there pretty much every saturday while I am working in the neighborhood. We moved from Texas couple of years ago and one thing i missed the most was breakfast tacos. They are so nice that they dont have breakfast tacos on the menu but they always happily make one for me whenever I go. Love their spicy salsa!

Small —in the cut spot. Too small to have a real dine-in expérience but the food is legit.

Yelp
This is a cute little spot on Lexington to pickup a burger! The burger size is good and the fries were hot and crispy. I called to order and it was ready in 10 minutes. Definitely my go to lunch spot on Tuesdays.

Yelp
We stopped by for a quick lunch before the Met. Really wasn't expecting much from a place that serves 3 different cuisines, but was honestly pleasantly surprised. I got the grilled chicken sandwich, and it was overall well put together. Well seasoned, flavorful, with a super well toasted rye. I just wish it wasn't a triple decker; way too much bread for the amount of filling. The fries were also super super good; thick cut, but super crispy, with a really tender inside. We also got a chili burger, with the chili being surprisingly good. Service was relatively slow given that we were the only customers, but it is just one chef. Overall, will stop by if in the area and need a quick fix!

Yelp
super super expensive for a small white castle burger and 7 fires smh. yes everything is expensive but you charging a arm and a leg for a small burger

Yelp
Burger 1 is a familiar business name to me. I never tried it because I thought it was just burgers. I've seen this Taco place for years and years. It's very small inside and the scaffolding hides it. I didn't know it was Burger 1. I've been passing by recently and today when my lunch plan fell through I went in for Taco Tuesday. It's really like an old school Mom and Pop place. I could order my tacos anyway I wanted. I eat very plain and the spice in the pork was just enough zip for me. I added American Cheese and shredded lettuce. The tacos were double shells of corn. They both felt heavy in the bag. I went outside and found a table nearby. They sure hit the spot after a busy morning. I'm recommending you try this place. The menu is very extensive. The menu is posted on the front of the business outside and inside above the grill. Check it out. It was more money than I would pay for a meal like this but it's worth it for fast friendly service with fresh food made to order!

Rich W.

Yelp
Got a bacon egg and cheese sandwich and it was terrible. The bacon was undercooked eggs weren't better either. Maybe I should've gotten a burger instead. And they won't let customers use the bathroom. Wouldn't recommend this place.

Yelp
Hidden gem close to Central Park! Very reasonably priced with lots of choices for everyone. Burgers yep! Mexican food yep! Sandwiches yep! Breakfast yep that too! Burgers were fresh meat smashed on the grill to create a nice crispy crust and juicy inside. Chicken for sandwich and taco also freshly grilled and tasty! The beans and rice were not quite up to being from the southwest standards, but were not terrible. Definitely loved the decor that has not changed since the 70's! Gotta love a local mom and pop non-touristy spot that gives you lots of good food at a reasonable price!

Melissa P.

Yelp
We ordered delivery and ordered the following: -grilled cheese: this was really good, the perfect amount of butter and cheese and the price was so reasonable. Finally, a restaurant in the city that doesn't overcharge for a grilled cheese. -philly cheesesteak: this was good, but it could use more steak and melted cheese. There is a ton of bread, but not enough filling. The fries that came with this were amazing though. -chocolate shake: this was great. It wasn't melted upon arrival despite how hot it is outside. Overall, I would recommend this place.

Yelp

Zee H.

Yelp
Inconsistent food. Burgers not usually cooked to temp as ordered, avocado is not usually fresh. Some days burgers are huge, some days they're small.

Chris B.

Yelp
Great prices for nyc but sort of bland taste! Burger was an ok size and accompanied it with an egg sandwich for $3 to fill me up and meet $10 CC minimum

Ataru M.

Yelp
Big lol's at the "my delivery..." crowd. Do you think to yourself, this looks like the place to make an online order, or expect a pleasant phone call? "Bu-but, this isn't like the burger from J.G.Melon'$ lovey, there's grease, and blood, boohoo." Does it look like any one cares? Not being rude, just don't understand what would give the impression they care about you or your order in any way. It must be the fancy decor that mislead you. This is a spot where you walk in and order and things go mostly ok. If you start making calls, and playing with your apps to place the order there's gonna be problems. They aren't ready for that yet. Order there and watch them make your food. Have a taco and settle down.

Chunjai K.

Yelp
It is a cold Sunday afternoon and this place has only take out. The burger looks good and because of their have no seat so I take the burger back to my car and eat inside. The burger taste delicious but I wish they have seats outside.

Maria K.

Yelp
My forever number one breakfast place!!! Always super delicious fresh and fast Customer service extremely good I always recommend this place to my friends

Brian L.

Yelp
A very small, discreet, hole-in-the-wall place about the size of a one-car garage that has only one line cook and one cashier. Barstools seat about 8-9 people: 4-5 at the counter and 4 by the mirror opposite (the stool in the corner is anchored to the floor). The seating arrangements feel cozy when there is no line to order, but prepare to surrender all of your personal space when there is. Ordered a carnitas burrito for $6+ at 2 PM on a Saturday afternoon while visiting the Met. I enjoyed the soothing hum of electric fans and Spanish-language news while waiting. Filling but not heavy, my burrito was roughly the size of a Chipotle burrito and contained sliced avocado, baked beans, shredded mozzarella, and rice. Credit card minimum: $10.

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Maybe more like 3.5? Had a craving for a juicy burger and was at least satisfied here. Ordered an egg on top, which I preferred would of been over-easy but came out hard (maybe I should've specified). Burger was juicy/greasy but could of used a little more flavor. Nice plain bun to soak up some grease. Prices are increased from the pics on here, I believe it was about ~$12 for a bacon cheeseburger with egg no sides (not deluxe with tomato, onions etc). Seems like a good local spot though with a bunch of regulars passing through.

JS W.

Yelp
A true hole in the wall! A 9-seat lunch counter, pumping out reasonably priced grub smack in the middle of the expensive part of the UES. Best value for the money, quite tasty, and while no-frills, there's something to be said for getting a half-pound-burger:with fries and a properly-made egg-cream for just 10-bucks in Manhattan! Explore the menu and discover7 hidden gems like the Mexican Hero or the Burger-One-Special-Burger. They even take cards and deliver!!

Prerna S.

Yelp
A hidden gem! I love their burgers. The food is always fresh and cooked to order, the burgers taste great even when delivered. They do a wonderful job communicating as well. My go-to is their burger with grilled jalapeños, tomato and onions. Juicy patty, fresh jalapeños (YAY) and we'll cooked onions. Does it get better? Yes. Solid deal when you get a burger and fries for under $15. Highly highly recommend.

Tony J.

Yelp
I had the steak and eggs breakfast. The steak was very thin and not the greatest quality, but hey not bad for $8. (Perhaps the corned beef hash would have been a better choice.) The eggs were sunny side up and cooked just right. You sit at a counter and they make the food in front of you. Friendly, basic service.

Jenny S.

Yelp
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD GREASY SPOON/ HOLE-IN-THE-WALL DINER... it's a real shame that i don't live nearby! i was lured in with an KGB deal! (which stated that lunch was take-out only BUT the workers were so accommodating they let us sit-in!) 8 oz burgers, mexican food, sandwiches, pastries, breakfast-fare (all typical of a joint like this!) -----THEY CUSTOMIZE BREAKFAST BURRITOS: i had a LONG list of ingredients & they were glad to fill my order! sausage (the breakfast link ones i love!), onions, jalapenos, cheddar, eggs, and mushrooms... YUM although it was much smaller than i expected! -----8 oz cali burger: like the sear & meat texture, although the meat was kind of bland! there's only a few counter seats facing the kitchen & along the opposite wall, so i can imagine the workers developing a relationship with their customers! NOTE: call before you come in because I think they close early if business is slow!

Heather G.

Yelp
Mexican and burgers...TOGETHER?!?!?! K sure. Total hole in the wall with a tiny dining area comprised of two rather short counters. Burger was delicious, although if you put avocado on anything I'll eat it without complaint, so even if the burger was less than stellar I'd have enjoyed it, ha. Fries were above average for a burger place, and cooked to order so they were blistering hot and crispy. The taco was typical authentic Mexican street taco style, although $2.75 is a little high for what it was (usually I pay about $2 for the same thing, but given that this is the city and not Long Wharf in New Haven or the podunk little Mexican place by where I work in suburbia Connecticut, I suppose I get it) The green hot sauce is no friggin joke, if you're a wimp on the spice scale, forget it. Cilantro and onions were aplenty, which makes me super happy. Carnitas were delicious too. If you're in the area and are jonesing for a burger, eschew Shake Shack and walk the few blocks here. No wait, and more food for the same price. (Also when an ethnic type food joint is actually frequented by people of that particular type, always a good sign and testament to the food.)

Phil S.

Yelp
Overall **** A really solid burger at a really reasonable price, add in that you are eating at what feels like a secret find made the whole experience very enjoyable for me. With 175 reviews it's hard to add much value here but I'll give it a shot. Setting *** This is the definition of "hole in the wall". It's not dirty but the entire store can't be 300 square feet and the only seating is 9 counter stools. Your are eating off of plastics plates, jammed shoulder to shoulder with other customers, bumped by people waiting to pick up take out but it was all part of the draw for me. Service **** Everyone I interacted with was friendly and the two cooks seem to really enjoy what they are doing and worked well together. Since it is so busy there wasn't much time for chit chat. Food **** My burger was seared nicely on a flattop grill, thick and juicy. My medium rare was a bit overdone but I figured that was more due to the way they finish it -they cover the burgers to speed up cooking. The burger could definitely have used some seasoning and I'm surprised they don't use some type of Mexican seasoning to play on the theme. The fries are the battered type so they were very crispy but again unseasoned. Value ***** For NYC a $10 half pound burger is simply ridiculous.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Small burger joint with nice burgers and limited seating. Came here on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered a chili cheese burger. What they gave me was a burger covered in chili and some cheese, which I ate with a knife and fork. Plastic utensils and paper plates. Not quite the form I expected, but it tasted great. Not a lot of seats here: just a few stools at a counter.

Steve K.

Yelp
Is bigger, juicier, and better than Shake Shack for less. End of review.

Liz A.

Yelp
Met up with friends who came all the way from CALI to visit the MET. We decided to grab a bite and happened to stumble upon this gem. We each ended up getting tacos and fries. I really enjoyed the fries, crispy on the outside, warm and soft (not too soft) on the inside. The chicken tacos was really good and tasted oh so authentic. Cute small place you can come to for a quick bite. Very friendly people work here.

Joel S.

Yelp
Stopped by this hole in the wall looking for a quick breakfast. It's a teeny, run down place staffed by 3 earnest yet cheerful guys. The coffee was OK. I had an awesome breakfast burrito and my wife had a very good egg sandwiches. Breakfast for two was cheaper than a single egg on a croissant at Zabar's. I enjoyed hanging out at this authentic place. Going to go back to try the burgers, etc...

Joanna G.

Yelp
Needed a cheap lunch place for a big group (9 people) and found this place nearby! Burgers with fries are like $8, which is just unheard of in the UES. The place has very limited seating and it's a tight squeeze; it's like a bar that also serves as the pick up area and as a counter for some customers. We took all of our burgers to go and ate at a nearby park. They were so nice to us despite our crazy order and the food took maybe 10-15 minutes? The burgers are huge and really good; it's just a good cheap local burger joint. They also deliver in the neighborhood. Only down side is that there's no space to eat, but it looks like most of the people were on their lunch break and trying to grab it to go or to quickly dine and go.

Amy Y.

Yelp
Our go to ordering place for burgers when we want to stay home and be sloths. The prices for the burgers are amazing and delivery is pretty fast - usually 30-40 min as they advertise. The only downside is they tend to close faiy early - on weekends you have to order before around 6ish. We usually get a New York burger (one each) and make it a deluxe - for 2.50$ extra on top of the regular burger price, you get lettuce, tomatoes and a decent side order of fries. The fries are my favorite part - very potatoes. Sometimes they do get the temperature of the burger wrong - I usually like mine medium well to well done but one time got a medium burger with pink inside - just plopped it into the microwave and got rid of the pink. But I really can't complain for the convenience of fast delivery and cheap burgers and fries.

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Small hole in the wall located on the Upper East Side. I don't recommend eating there only because the place is really tiny and legit has four stools. Nonetheless, their burgers are fresh and awesomely priced. It's nice to see affordable fresh food on this side of Manhattan because literally every other eating establishment is ridiculously overpriced. They have a variety of other meals (tacos, fajitas, mozzarella sticks) but I can't get away from their burgers man. Especially the Texas burger with the over easy egg. The yolk is just dripping into your burger.

Jesse R.

Yelp
not sure why all the good reviews. burgers are meh and overpriced. go to shake shack instead

Emma C.

Yelp
omg. yelp led me afar on this one. come here if you want: - rude service - cramped seating - bland food - a burrito filled with rice - unseasoned burger -cheap food that isn't worth the price if you want a cheap meal, go to one of hot dog or chicken and rice carts.... it will be much more satisfying

Phil H.

Yelp
Sometimes you really can't judge a book by it's cover. Take for instance this Burger One location. It's kind of rinky-dink and not really that inviting a spot to go for a sit down meal. It's menu is a cockeyed mix of breakfast entrees, burger plates, sandwiches, wraps, and Mexican food. The space is kind of clean but not spic and span shining. Still, this place makes some of the best burgers around. Juicy, thick, hot, and tasty. Not the kind of spot to go for a fast food burger, and not for the diet conscious. Still, I do drop in here once in a while on the way to work for an egg white sandwich on toasted whole wheat and a tasty cup of coffee for less than $5. The guys who work here are pretty friendly and will work with you on specific requests. They have around 15 burger options, and about double the amount of wraps, so there is something for everyone's tastes here. From street level you have to walk up to get into this place, and it never seems to busy when I have been here. The menu is blown up and plastered on the front of the place so you can get an idea of what they offer. Nice addition to the area, and a decent choice if looking for a quickie spot to appease your burger craving and don't want Shake Shack, or if craving a wrap or burrito to pick up on the way home from work.

Kim F.

Yelp
Ok so this place is a tiny hole in the wall in upper east side NYC and packed at lunch time but well worth squeezing into if your hungry for a burger while in the city! The burgers were cooked as ordered perfectly and fries were crispy and delicious.

Julia M.

Yelp
I love this place! A fairly cheap eat on the Upper East Side. Excellent burger and great chorizo burrito. It is not light, but always filling and satisfying.

Jonny Q.

Yelp
I think it's safe to say that if Jools from Pulp Fiction was with me today, he'd agree that I had a damn tasty burger! In fact I have to say that this was one of the best I've ever had in a rather well documented life of beef related delights. After a pleasant morning strolling around Central Park and having only been in NYC for a few hours I decided a burger was the best way to get into the swing of things. Harder than I thought though as I headed towards Shake Shack (and then turned the other way when I realised there were at least 50 people queuing outside) - using Yelp I found this place just on the other side of the Park and rushed across as quickly as possible. As well as kick ass burgers, they also do a range of Mexican street food like tacos - everything is rustic but good quality, with only about enough seating for around 8 people inside. The cheese burger I had with avocado, grilled onions and pickles was simply incredibly juicy, flavoursome, fresh and filling. Just what I was after and for $12 pretty good value. Even though I'm only in town for a few days, I wouldn't bet against me going again! Happy happy joy joy!

Mary P.

Yelp
This is a no frills place to eat food that doesn't cost you the same price as if you were getting a much nicer meal downtown (frickin upper east side b.s. and trickery I tell UA). Come by if you're cool with the barely there 10 seater grill with a tiny hidden restroom and usually filled with middle aged men watching football on my trip since it was Sunday. Seems like they have their regulars since the prices don't lie. The fries actually have salt on them and the burgers are hunks of edible ground meat with a few options for toppings. Mine wasn't so greasy or rich in particular because I think cheese would have helped that situation but hey, a filling meal for less than 10 dollars in the upper east without a franchise name attached?? Heck the franchises charge more for their b.s. errr food. I can't give them an amazing rating because one I don't want you to swarm this joint and two it's just a-ok food but this basic meal may be elevated by the cost benefits if that's important to you. I'm going to try more options and change my rating if the Mexican food is on point (skeptical as of now).

Heriberto C.

Yelp
Best burger in town very fresh and worth the money. This place has fast delivery and the food is always fresh not yesterdays food like most.

BocaJay S.

Yelp
Awesome, awesome food. It was my first time there and I'm impressed how delicious their food was!! I would definitely stop by again the next time I'm on the upper east side. Had the Torta de milanesa. It was excellent!! Also had a blueberry muffin and an iced tea- Snapple.

Chris G.

Yelp
OMG! I'm so happy that my friend told me about this spot, I had one of the best burger and burrito in NYC! This spot is super cozy, great vibe, cool people. They accepted credit cards!

Linda L.

Yelp
Solid choice for grab and go food, and you can't really beat these prices. Also super convenient that they open at like 6am, so you can get your burger fix in during the wee hours of the morning. Would not recommend dine in as there is a bar with literally six stools. Cheeseburger : really nice and juicy. cooked perfectly. I made it deluxe to get some onion, tomato, and lettuce, with a side of fries. The fries looked great, but I think I waited too long to eat them (I had a bus to catch). Definitely would get again. Steak taco: Meh, not bad, but I've had better. Kinda too spicy for my preferences, and there weren't any other toppings besides steak and sauce. Probably would not order again. Service wasn't over the top friendly, but not really unfriendly either. Keeping it real I guess.

Tamie L.

Yelp
Definitely a hole-in-a-wall kind of place. Caution, you may smell like food cause of how small the place is. Also no bathroom for customers. However!! The workers are very nice and the place is clean for the most part. Onto the food, I had the Burger One Special Burger and my friend had the Chicken Burrito with fries. My burger and the fries were DELICIOUS. The burger was juicy and cooked medium rare to my taste. The fries were cut pretty big but they were crispy on the outside **tip: eat while they're hot!**. One of the best fries I had in NYC hands down. The Chicken Burrito was okay. It was lacking some type of sauce or seasoning. It tasted too plain. All in all, I definitely recommend this place for anyone who enjoys eating burgers and fries.

Ju L.

Yelp
Very cramped with limited seating (two bars with stools). At the last minute, I decided I'd had a ridiculous number of burgers the past month and really wanted something Mexican. I got a torta milanese (fried pork). It was all right... the whole thing was pretty dry and a little bland. The boyfriend got a chorizo cheeseburger. It was tasty enough for something that = meat meat meat, but not very interesting. You can watch them cook everything on the grill and it's definitely a huge hunk o' beef they slap on there, but in the end everything was pretty average. ...I'm not sure why Burger 1 is getting such rave reviews. Service was ok, food was nothing special, space is old looking but not even very neighborhood-y. Have UESers never seen a hole in the wall before? Doesn't automatically mean it's the most magical thing on the planet! Stop watching Guy Fieri.

Tyler L.

Yelp
This is a small hole in the wall diner that serves American diner food (hamburgers, omelettes, tuna melts, club sandwiches, etc.) and Mexican food. I only tried the Mexican food from here. This place is Latin American run and it is authentic , but a little blander than other Mexican places. The food could use a little more sazón. The food was definitely a very good portion size though. The torta I tried (with nicely grilled chicken) and quesadilla here are both very filling.

Nadjia J.

Yelp
Decided to order this on Seamless after having a serious craving for a big juicy burger. So after reading a few reviews, I decided to order from Burger One. I ordered a bacon cheddar cheeseburger deluxe (comes with lettuce, tomato, and fries). Sadly, no pickle was apart of the mix. I ordered the burger to be medium, but the burger was more like medium-well. Not the worst thing in the world. But on the other hand, I was expecting a larger burger and some nice crispy fries. The fries looked a little burnt and sad. Bottom line, it made my hunger go away, but it didn't satisfy my burger craving.

Anthony O.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The space is very small but it's fun you get a meal and a show. The diner counter is right by the open kitchen area. My burger was so good! Thick juicy cheesy goodness. So affordable too!

Sam Y.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick burger. The burgers are of nice size and juicy. The only hang up I have is that there is an out of order sign on the bathroom door and one of the staff used the bathroom. So apparently it was working. This is not convenient for customers when a place has a restroom that doesn't function or a sign alluding to the fact that it doesn't function when in reality it does. NYC is not a place where bathrooms are readily available for customers.

Thomas W.

Yelp
I now understand why Shake Shack rules the burger business in NYC--others cannot compete! Stick with the Mexican tacos at Burger One. Do not mkstake the fact that the burgers here are a tremendous value. Still they use lesser quality ground beef, and the ingredients are bargain basement. In the West the prices would be even lower, but the burgers here do not even compare to a Wendy's.. The Mexican food here is really what to order.

M S.

Yelp
Just ordered from here and have very mixed feelings. Delivery was prompt, which was great. Cheeseburger was medium rare and I asked for medium well. Grease was dropping from the burger as well as blood. Medium well doesn't have blood dripping out. Fries were awesome. Just perfect. Where I got annoyed was the fact that I ordered a cheese Danish for my commute home later. And I got a blueberry muffin. What even? They're not close at all...lol. 2 stars. Not impressed, and I really wanted to love this place :( Perhaps I'll give it a try sometime, non-delivery.

Ray L.

Yelp
A very yummy "the burger one special". Love jalapeño s. Hot today. Thanks. Also has tacos plus everything else you need to eat. Awesome. I would recommend this and eat the same meal again.

Ryan R.

Yelp
Went here to grab a bite to eat for lunch on a Friday. I knew the price points were good here, but didn't realize how popular this small place is. I went with an order of the chicken fajitas. I would be lying if I said that these really hit the spot. They were good, but they were extremely small and did not have much in the way of veggies. I hear the burgers here are pretty good, so you might be better off sticking to those. Nevertheless, the prices are cheap and everything comes out fresh.
