"“Burp Castle really gets to the heart of a very specific vision, executed beautifully. It's meant to be a monastery of beer. They're playing Gregorian chants over the speakers. If you speak above a certain volume, the bartender will kindly and gently shush you. I think it's a really great second or third date spot. I went with a very good friend of mine on what turned out to be a classic night for us, this sort of themed bar crawl that we did on the Lower East Side. And Burp Castle was the moment where we got more deeply into our friendship and our conversation because we had to be more intentional with what we were saying to one another.”" - brennan carley
"Burp Castle is just a bar, but we’re including it because this East Village establishment is the only place we know that strictly enforces indoor voices only. If you dare to speak a whisper above the Gregorian chants playing in the monastic-themed space, the bartender will likely—loudly—shush you. They’ve got a great selection of Belgian and German beers. Just keep those belches under control." - molly fitzpatrick, bryan kim, willa moore, will hartman, sonal shah
"Belch too loudly at Burp Castle and you'll probably get shushed by the bartender. Open since 1992, this monastery-themed drinking hole in the East Village is (most of the time) the quietest bar in New York. Staff don’t exclusively wear robes anymore, and the music occasionally diverges from Gregorian chants, but the shushing is still vigorous—even if you’re talking in polite conversational tones in the tiny, caged-in sidewalk counter outside. There’s more atmosphere inside anyway, with murals of boisterous monks and a little note that says “Please Whisper” on the beer taps. It’s a great place to really give your undivided attention to a good Belgian or German brew. photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff Pause Unmute" - Sonal Shah
"Burp Castle was one of the few bars to boast a long beer list when it opened in 1992, and now, it’s still a solid place to grab a Belgian beer in New York. It’s got a monastery theme, but it’s perhaps best known for being a quiet bar — meaning patrons are required to whisper. Bartenders enforce the rule by shooshing loud talkers; going with a group is a bad idea, but it’s an alluring set-up for an intimate conversation with a date." - Serena Dai

"Offers an intimate, whisper-enforced East Village beer-bar experience ideal for a quiet date where patrons are expected to speak softly; the enforced hush can be charming for a close conversation but annoying for larger groups." - Eater Staff
