The Best Restaurants for Outdoor Dining in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"While Zaytinya holds down the main level of Culver City’s Shay hotel, Butterfly occupies the rooftop space, which offers views of the hills, stretching towards the ocean. Jose Andres is behind both Zaytinya and Butterfly, which means the menu is beyond what could usually be expected at a hotel. Butterfly’s menu offers Mexican dishes that pair well with drinks, like a chicharron quesadilla, fish tacos, guacamole, and ceviche. The Salt Air Margarita comes with an impressive foam on top that tastes true to its namesake. On weekends, head to Butterfly for a brunch of chilaquiles, pozole, and breakfast tacos." - Rebecca Roland

Butterfly - Review - Culver City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Located on top of The Shay in Culver City (above Zaytinya), the only thing this poolside hotel spot has going for it is the fact that it’s on a roof. The cocktails are watered-down and served in flimsy plastic cups and the bar food consists of skimpy overpriced tacos and bland ceviche. At least the views are good though. Just kidding. Bulky cabanas line the west side of the pool area, obscuring any hope of a sunset photo. Butterfly might catch on during the hotter months when sitting next to water counts for something, but as it stands, the crowd is mostly hotel guests on their phones trying to figure out if there’s any place better to eat in the area. We have some suggestions." - Brant Cox

Came for lunch and ordered the Ceviche "Atún Pacífico" which was $22. The server told me that it didn't come with chips and that I would have to buy it separately which is ridiculous already. The amount of food is just pathetic. The food itself is mediocre at best and took almost 20 mins to come when there were maybe 10 other people at the restaurant. The servers are nice, but the quality of service isn't great. Forgot to give me a spoon so had to wait another 10 minutes before I can flag someone down. Rooftop is cool, but that is about the only good thing about this place. I will never pay to eat here again and just go across the street to real restaurants.

Had a great experience coming here to eat for my friends bday. The food was great, loved the ambiance and our waiter Quin went above and beyond. I really liked the vibe here and food price was pretty good for a hotel.:)

Google
Beautiful atmosphere with the pool. The Brussel sprouts were great as was the tuna ceviche. We both enjoyed the carnitas taco more than the mushroom one. Wish they had more items for lunch. Will definitely have to return for happy hour.

Google
We ate here for breakfast a couple times on our recent trip and had great meals both times. The first time we had the butterfly breakfast, bagel and lox and the kids blueberry pancakes. The second time we tried the chilaquiles, avocado toast, and the yogurt, berries and granola. The wait staff were friendly. The portion sizes match the price. The ambiance is nice in the open air patio next to the pool. They have a fire place and heaters when it’s chilly.

We tried this place during dine LA and had the $25 menu special. It was quite a good amount of food. The guacamole was very generous. The carne asada and carnitas tacos were very dry and hard, over. Needed salsa. The chocolate dessert cake was Dynamite! It was very difficult to find the restaurant, there are no signs that it's on the sixth level, we had to ask the hotel reception. Parking is a fortune.

Google
New owners for the rooftop bar/restaurant at The Shay Hotel. Pretty good for tapas and light dining. I got their Carnitas Taco and it was juicy with crunchy fried pork skin on top. The Camerones Negro were made with with a strong black garlic sauce that gave it a very savory taste. The Salt and Air Margarita is so good here too. Salted foam on top that takes the margarita to a more elevated level. Service was friendly and helpful in picking out their highly recommended dishes. No validation for parking unfortunately here if you parked valet or a garage.

Google
I rarely write reviews, but this is a bit of a hidden gem that earned some recognition: a Jose Andres restaurant on the roof of a hotel. Most of their guests are, like me, staying at the hotel and are there for breakfast, but this deserves broader recognition. It's beautiful, plant-filled space by a pool, lovely even (especially?) on a cold rainy day with ample and effective heat lamps. Food was very good - modest variations on traditional offerings that really hit the spot. Service was nothing short of outstanding.

Google
We got a chance to experience one of the best hotel breakfasts known to humanity - Butterfly's offering. Ordered open-faced omelet and butterfly breakfast and all was delicious, cooked with fresh ingredients, no regrets or hard feelings after eating (which is the case in 95% of the times I am eating out). Also as a fan of coffee I appreciate generous refills and the fact that they offer decaf too. The best thing is that you don't have to stay at the hotel to eat there - it's open to the public. So, if you live in the area and want to have a breakfast with an incredible view at a very reasonable price while being treated like a king/queen I can't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
Yummy food. Tried the fish tacos and queso and was so pleased. The ambience is absolutely gorgeous. Rooftop with sunset views. Staff is very kind and gave great drink recs. Highly recommend.

Yelp
- A Night to Remember at The Butterfly (The Shay Hotel) I came to the Butterfly at the Shay Hotel for their Latin jazz & salsa night featuring Nathan and his band, Sonido Zini and what started out as a small hiccup at the door turned into one of the most unforgettable evenings I've had in a long time. My friend Mauricio and I rode in on our motorcycles, parked in the hotel garage, and headed up to the rooftop excited for live Latin jazz. At the entrance, we were greeted warmly by the hostesses and the Assistant general manager, Brett Talbot. With the event fully reserved and sold out, Brett took the time to explain how popular these evenings are, shared that they happen on the last Saturday of every month, and kindly offered to add us to the 200+ person waitlist for next time. His professionalism and welcoming attitude set the tone for the evening and made us feel taken care of right away. He is an overall outstanding manager who knows how to treat his guests. Inside, the venue looked great, the atmosphere was stylish, the band was live, but the dance floor was just empty - people standing around on the outskirts staring at the dance floor. Hardly anyone was dancing. Just one couple. Mauricio and I decided to change that. We began inviting women to dance, and one by one, the floor lit up. Suddenly, the energy shifted. What was a standing-room crowd turned into a lively salsa celebration. Around my fourth dance, an employee walked up and stamped my arm, basically saying, "You're in." Guests were asking the manager if we were pro dancers with the venue as we transformed the vibe. The highlight? When Nathan from Sonido Zini came over to the table after his set, full of excitement, and told me how thrilled he was to see people truly dancing to his music. He even said he wished he could dance that way himself. That moment, artist to dancer sealed the night for me. What began as a near-miss turned into a night full of music, connection, and pure joy. Between the incredible sounds of Sonido Zini, the welcoming energy of the crowd, and the eventual support from the staff, the evening became unforgettable. If you love live Latin jazz, salsa, and community energy, mark your calendar for the last Saturday of the month at The Butterfly. Just make sure to get on the waitlist early and bring your dance shoes. Danny Apollo

Yelp
In a world where everything seems to be getting more and more expensive, Butterfly feels like a refreshing alternative. Located at the rooftop pool of The Shay Hotel in Culver City, the ambiance is lovely--soft pinks and greens create a peaceful blend of trendy, tranquil, and alfresco. On a Tuesday night, it was very quiet. The staff was on the leisurely side, but friendly enough. Our group of five sat at a large round table tucked in the corner. With a heat lamp nearby, it was perfectly comfortable outside. For five people and a good amount of food, we spent under $200--which felt like a great deal. What we ordered (some in multiples): - Yuzu Margarita ($18) - Classic Margarita ($8) - Queso Fundido con Tequila ($11) + Spicy Chorizo ($2) - Quesadilla de Chicharrón ($16) - Young Coconut Ceviche ($15) - Carnitas Taco ($8) - Pollo a la Parrilla Taco ($8) - Pescado Baja California Taco ($9) The food overall was good. All tortillas were made with blue corn and held together well. The tacos were slightly larger than street tacos--easy to share or just right for one person. The ceviche fell a little flat for me, but I'll admit I'm not a big coconut fan. The quesadillas were my favorite: three small portions, gooey cheese, and crispy pork belly that added the perfect crunch. The hotel offers valet for $23 (price may vary), or you can try your luck with street parking or park at the Ivy station which max $18. Bottom line: Butterfly is a great spot to enjoy drinks and bites outdoors in a stylish, relaxed setting.

Yelp
Cute dog friendly rooftop in Culver! Came here for lunch on Sunday. It was nice that it wasn't crowded. Parking is difficult- you either have to valet for $18 or park at Ivy Station ($18 max). I went to validate my ticket at a coffee shop for 2 hours. The guacamole, ceviche, and tacos were good! The chilaquiles were drenched in sauce so the chips weren't crunchy anymore and I didn't really care for the shrimp dish we got. Overall, it is pricey for Mexican food, but you get aesthetic vibes by the pool.

Yelp
Made it a point to go back and try the food. This restaurant has changed over a few times and honestly, it was GREAT breakfast/brunch before when it was Canopy Club!! However, I love the poolside so I decided to give the new restaurant a chance. I was pleasantly surprised by the tacos -- fish was my favorite. The mushroom taco was good too but the rockfish was much better. French fries are reliable and chips and salsa is okay. I'll update when there's more to try. Service is always ok, but just ok. Sun deck with a decent playlist and small pool and venue but good for a dayscape.

Yelp
I went here with a friend for lunch for dineLA. Total was $25 per person, plus tax and tip. We ordered the guacamole and queso fundido to start, atun pacifico and coconut ceviche, pescado and carnitas taco and the chocoflan and tres leches for dessert. Everything tasted great and the portions were overall large for their dineLA menu. The queso had tequila which you could definitely taste and I wasn't a huge fan, but outside of that I would get all the dishes again.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place because the rooftop set-up is beautiful and cute, but unfortunately the food and overall experience were disappointing. We ordered the ceviche, shrimp poblano, and fish tacos. Everything was pretty tasteless -- the ceviche didn't taste fresh, and it didn't even come with chips (we had to order those separately). The fish tacos were bland and very average; honestly, I've had better from a fast food spot. The shrimp had a strange aftertaste and was under-seasoned. Drinks were basic -- we tried a Paloma and it was nothing special. The vibe on the rooftop was surprisingly dull despite the nice setting. Service was just okay, but when we mentioned we didn't enjoy the dishes, the server didn't seem to care. Considering the prices, I expected a much better experience. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend Butterfly for the food.

Yelp
Butterfly is located on the rooftop on The Shay hotel. Valet parking only or you can pay for self parking at the structure by the Platform. The space is very cute and nicely decorated. Kind of weird that hotel guests have to walk through the restaurant to get to the pool. We tried their dineLA menu and got: Guacamole - lots of lime juice and delicious Quesofundido - very cheesy, greasy, and came with three warm blue corn tortillas Tuna ceviche - Asian inspired flavors with Maggi soy sauce. Quite salty, but this would make a great poke bowl. Shrimp ceviche - shrimp was precooked perfectly. Nice flavors Carnitas taco - way too salty Fish taco - delicious batter fried fish, but the toppings and sauce were watery and made the tortilla soggy Ordered an extra mushroom taco since it was happy hour and on the HH menu. I did not like it at all. Tres leche - pretty good, but cake was super dense Chocoflan - delicious flavors in the chocolate cake and sauce, but the flan part was lumpy and flavorless. Our server was not observant or interested in our table. It took a while for him to first come over and introduce himself. I had ordered the mushroom taco from the happy hour menu, but he charged the full price. I asked him about it and he said he gave us a "regular sized taco". It seemed like the same portion as the dinela menu tacos, but whatever. The restaurant is cute, but the food was hit or miss and the service could have been better. I give it a 2.5 star rating.

Yelp
The food here was pretty good. We came for the dine LA experience. The portion sizes were nice. I did not like the dessert tho. The service was also nice, our waitress was very kind and attentive to us especially with us being such a large group. The ambiance was super cute. It was outside near a pool. There was a DJ and he was playing FIRE music.

Yelp
I went there during Restaurant Week to try their menu. I ordered several tacos have pork, beef, shrimp, and fish and each one was excellent. The setting is perfect for a date, with a modern bar located by the pool. The service was very friendly, and I'll definitely go back. It's the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy the vibe, and eat good food.

Yelp
As soon as we knew chef Jose Andres had a restaurant in Culver City, we knew we had to stop by. Butterfly is located on the roof of a hotel on a busy intersection which makes for amazing views of surrounding areas! We ordered multiple items on the menu and everything was very tasty, fresh and made to order. Our fave was the camarones al mojo and the tuna Pacifico (ceviche) because of their incredible flavor! Love! We came for lunch during the week and it was mostly empty but it was perfect because we had all the great service to ourselves! The waiter was kind enough to make us a drink on the house to try something new and everyone was very attentive. We will def be back!

Yelp
After cocktails at the rooftop Bohemian bar in downtown Culver City, we loaded into my vintage Toyota Highlander hybrid to drive the .4 miles to East Culver City and The Shay Hotel, a three year-old hotel where Jose Andrés, the great chef, father of molecular gastronomy and Nobel Prize winning humanitarian feeding victims of natural and unnatural disasters and first responders, has fashioned his newest restaurant called Butterfly on the roof of this hotel. The hotel lobby is very modern and interesting as we proceeded up to the roof that opens up into a hostess bay and then a colorful Mexican/Caribbean indoor/outdoor casual but tasteful decor with a swimming pool beyond the dining areas with cabanas and views of the hills around Culver City. The restaurant name is inspired by the small but adventurous Monarch and lively trip around Mexico. Expectations were high because I have eaten at Chef Andrés flagship restaurant Bazaar in LA that showed off his combining art, science and food to deconstruct dishes and recreate them in the most inventive and magical ways that earned him the reputation as the Picasso of food and provided me and my family the most remarkable meal we've ever had the privilege to eat. I've eaten at some of his other restaurants in Las Vegas but he was forced to close Bazaar because the foreign owned SLS Hotel would not give him any break during Covid so he had to close it. He has opened two other restaurants downtown I have not tried yet so I chose this newest one for my birthday. My son and I started with delicious but totally different cocktails: I had the salt foam margarita that was ridiculously and perhaps dangerously good save for the fact I'm a lightweight and cheap date so one was fine for me and my son got a tequila or mezcal, chocolate with artichoke liquor (how is that even possible?) which was delicious. We started with a table guacamole served in a large stone mortar bowl and as great as my killer guac is, this guacamole was spectacular. I tried to reverse engineer this in my mind and mouth examining how this could taste so fresh, so silky smooth with such bursting avocado flavor. Great start. Then since we ordered a bunch of shared and personal entree plates it seemed like the very attentive runners were passing our lovely table dropping off dishes every two minutes. Jeff and Fran shared a Caesar salad and a atun Pacifico ceviche I could not try. Michael and I shared the incredible braised Brussel Sprouts that we all thought was incredibly tasty without being overly charred as some American New restaurants serve it. If only my Mom were alive to see me enjoy Brussel sprouts which, when she overcooked this and all vegetables, I would run out of the house and refuse to it it. The smell nauseated me and I never ate this BS until Renee Mitchell and I were in Santa Fe years ago eating at the beautiful Inn of the Anasazi. This was the first restaurant that served shaved thin Brussel sprouts, charred with cranberries and I don't remember what else that my wife ordered. Harkening back to my detesting these veggies I initially refused to try it. Renee persisted and when I finally tried this dish I had a revelation which continued when we later had this dish at a restaurant so hip that there is no sign outside, Black Market Liquor Bar in Studio City. I ordered the ceviche citricos and a carne asada taco. My son ordered the carne asada and carnitas tacos, with my SIL ordering the enchiladas and my bro the Pescado Baja California. The drinks, guacamole, Brussel sprouts and my ceviche which was light and flavorful were all excellent. The rest of the food we ordered was very good but here I think the expectation raised the bar too high. As a wonderful surprise, my SIL made me a GF almond and orange juice cake. She is a great baker but she was very concerned that this attempt at making a gluten free cake may not have turned out well. The server said they could cut four slices and serve but there was a $5 a slice serving charge. Jeff immediately said no way and when the server said we could cut it and they would provide us plates and forks at no charge, we yelled bring it on. Jeff deftly cut the cake like a more than average white band, and he only charged us $2 a slice. Jeff's horrified look waiting for the verdict caused us a huge laugh and from the first bite Fran was relieved because this moist almondy perfection rivaled anything similar at a French patisserie. She is now taking orders... What a great way to end the meal as we descended into the lobby for the valet and the short drive back to downtown CC. It was a good day in LA, a good time to be alive, and grateful to share it with my family.

Yelp
Our group was very disappointed in this place, considering it is a Jose Andres restaurant. If you're choosing, Zaytinya on the bottom floor of the Shay hotel is a MUCH better restaurant. Butterfly is on the top of the Shay Hotel, right next to the pool. We came for DineLA lunch on a weekday thinking it'd be a quick, especially at the dishes seemed simple enough. Instead we had a long drawn out lunch where easily 15 min past between each course and we were just waiting, to the point we asked for our desserts to go to avoid dragging things out longer. The food was fine, nothing amazing. The highlight was the Queso Fundido to which we added spicy chorizo and came with fresh tortillas -- hard to go wrong with melted cheese. Cerviche was standard, as was the taco (only got 1 for dinela), nothing else really stood out from the menu. Dessert were tiny slivers - hardly worth waiting for. Ended up filling up on tortilla chips while we were waiting (which at least they refill for free), otherwise I'd probably have left hungry given the amount of food provided. Hoping the experience on normal non-DineLA days are better, but I'm not coming back to find out if it is.

Yelp
We enjoyed our visit to butterfly! The decor and pool vibes were awesome and relaxing. Our favorite was the queso fundido. Would not recommend the muchroom taco or young coconut ceviche due to small portions and lack of flavor.

Yelp
One of the best DineLA restaurants for lunch (thru Fri, 8/8) I've ever been to: 4-course generous meal, attentive service, outdoor ambience (rooftop), fresh, delicious food, and all for the astounding price of $25/person! That's mighty generous of the owner/management. Among the three of us, we had the guacamole (delicious!), chips (light), queso fundido (nice), shrimp cocktail (wonderful!), atun pacifico (refreshing!), fish and carnitas tacos (marvelous!). For dessert, we had the Chocoflan and Tres Leches - both were delectable! The restaurant doesn't validate parking. We found street parking 4 blocks away. It's located inside The Shay hotel. I highly suggest that the words "6th floor" be added under Butterfly on the signage near the entrance of The Shay hotel, and the word "Butterfly" above or next to 6th floor in the elevator to better direct people. We walked around the pool area and had to peer over the wall to see the view. No wow factor re the view. Just buildings. Perhaps the night views are better. I liked the outdoor poolside rooftop bar vibe and the butterfly theme at the entrance. Butterfly and Zaytinya restaurants are part of chef Jose Andres' group. Like the Conrad hotel near the Music Center, it's hard to get to Jose Andres' restaurant(s) there too because of the dismal lack of signage. Please improve the signage at The Shay. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
So good! We went here for Dine LA, $25 is an incredible dinner price. Since we were two people, we ordered different things and shared. Highlights were definitely the ceviche - all the food was great but the tuna ceviche especially was a standout. The sauce was incredible, I literally was scooping at it with my spoon at the end. Great easy service, OpenTable reservation, and love a good rooftop. Great spot in Culver!

Yelp
How I wanted to love this place not just because the ambiance was really awesome but it's a Jose Andres restaurant but what a disappointment in terms of the food. The tacos were tasteless, the Brussels sprouts were sour and in a bad way and the ceviches lacking flavor. 2 things stood out though, the guacamole and chips and the Camerones al mojo. Drinks were so so as well, sadly I can't recommend this restaurant for food or drinks. Service was great during our visit but the restaurant was empty coz it was one of those rainy days and the rooftop wasn't really happening.

Yelp
Butterfly - Cute Vibes & Great Drinks, Food Was a Mixed Bag Stopped in for dinner and had a mixed experience overall -- but the drinks, dessert, and service really stood out. What I Loved: * Spicy Cucumber Margarita - Incredible. Perfect ratio of spice, cucumber, and Tajín. Not too sweet or spicy. 10/10 * Chocolate Flan - I don't even like flan normally, but this was amazing -- rich, smooth, and not too heavy. 10/10 * My Bartender - Super friendly and welcoming. Made me feel at home. 10/10 What Was Just Okay: * Carnitas Tacos - The meat was flavorful, but everything else was a little dry and underwhelming. 6/10 * Tuna Ceviche - Small portion, and the pecans felt out of place flavor-wise. 6/10 What I'd Skip: * Chips & Salsa - Salsa lacked flavor and reminded me of jarred store-bought. Chips were fine but nothing special. 3/10 Overall Vibe: Cute decor, good views, and a relaxed atmosphere. I stay at the hotel for work and would definitely go back to try different dishes. I'd love to see the menu lean more Cali-Mex than Spanish-Mexican.

Yelp
- service was friendly and nice, no problems there - ambiance was great, cool rooftop area and nice seating with breeze my complaints come from the food and price. - $5 for chips and salsa. but the salsa is a watery mess. - $18 for guac. on the plus side, the guac was very good. however, the $5 "vegetables" addon was pitiful, its basically some lettuce and cucumbers. - $18-22 ceviche was quite good. I'd recommend it - $7-10 tacos were not good. they fell apart due to limp tortillas and too much watery toppings. the pork one was tasty, but the asada one was flavorless. to top it all off, they don't validate parking, so I got an $18 parking bill. I wouldn't recommend unless you're there for vibes only and don't mind mid overpriced food.

Yelp
We wanted to try Butterfly since Jose Andres took it over and it was disappointing. The queso fundido just tasted like melted cheese with none of the tequila flavor coming through. Even the chorizo we added had little flavor. The asada and fish taco and the brussels all heavily tasted of lime and were difficult to enjoy. Location is great and services was fine but food was a disappointment.

Yelp
My friend made a resy here for an early bday dinner for me on a Friday evening. Took the elevator up to the rooftop and wow... What a cute space! Right off the pool at the Shay hotel, the Butterfly bar and restaurant gives the vibe that you're on vacation, perhaps at a large resort, even out of the country... at least where we sat it did. There was a nice breeze and it was a warm day, perhaps this also contributed to the feels of vacay. The cocktail menu was nice and while slightly limited, the food was great as well. We were a group of 5 and arrived at different times and the staff was really accommodating. Most of use valet for parking and another parked in the Metro structure. All around a fun and cute experience.
google avatar

Alisha S.

Yelp
Butterfly was an interesting find when I was looking for a place to meet up with a friend near the metro. I didn't realize it was the rooftop bar and restaurant of the hotel. Friendly staff directed me to the elevator, and I rode to the top floor. The moment you walk in you feel like you're in some sort of tropical breezeway. Fire pits and large butterflies combined with tropical wallpaper gives everything an incredibly fun ambience. Service was quiet and muted. The whole place had a quiet, chill vibe in fact. Ordered a couple margaritas and a taco, but would love to come back another time and try their ceviche and queso fundido. Everything was good and this was a fun find.
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
The first thing you should know when you get to the restaurant is the parking is extremely expensive. To the best of my knowledge they only have valet parking for about $18, Or you can park in the area off National Bl. but it's quite expensive as well since it's by the hour. I don't know exactly how much. As far as the food goes, we tried the Dine LA menu. The guacamole was plentiful and tasty. It had a lot of lime juice, but it was still good. The next thing was a shrimp cocktail that came with DineLA .It's not a standard shrimp cocktail. It's cut up shrimp in a spicy sauce and some small veggies. It was still good, but small. Where things went south was the Carnitas taco was so F'in dry. It was barely edible and the tortilla that they use for their is the blue corn type which was like it was not cooked at all! The Carnitas meat was dry and tough that I wondered if it was freshly cooked. We had to ask for salsa just to make it go down to add some moisture. When it came to the desserts, I had the chocolate flan and I thought it was excellent and I would highly recommend it. I'm not sure what the situation is as far as coming back to this Restaurant. But one thing for sure I will NOT get the Carnitas taco or anything with carnitas because that was the worst part of the meal. The bottom line is it's a very nice restaurant on a rooftop and it's LOUD!

Yelp
Butterfly easily ranks as one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to in LA. The whole experience felt special from the moment we arrived. It's located on the sixth floor of a stunning hotel, right next to the pool, and the atmosphere was incredible. The sun was out, the breeze was perfect, and there was a live DJ playing, it genuinely felt like I had been transported to Los Cabos. The menu is tapas style, which made it fun to try a bunch of different things. We started with chips, guac, queso, and salsa, and honestly, those alone set the tone. The chips were some of the freshest I've had, light and crisp, and all the dips were balanced and flavorful. Service was hands down the best I've experienced in the city. Friendly, attentive, and just made the whole meal feel elevated without being stiff. The ceviches were standouts, I tried the tuna, and shrimp, super fresh, vibrant, and plated beautifully. I also had a fish taco, which had more heat than expected but packed a ton of flavor. We wrapped the meal with a tres leches that was incredibly milky, had a hint of lime zest and just enough rum to make it interesting. It totally sealed the meal on a high note. This spot is a full recommendation from me, food, service, and atmosphere all hit.

Yelp
The restaurant was on the 6th floor of a hotel on the roof top pool & bar. It had an indoor & outdoor seating. The weather was beautiful today so we sat outside & it was perfect. The ambiance had a colorful modern decor & relaxing vibe with a DJ playing live music. I was surprised to read mediocre reviews on their main dishes bc we thought everything was delicious except the dessert. We ordered off of the Dine LA menu bc the deal was great compared to ordering each dish separately. The menu was tapas style which we love bc we're not big eaters & we like to try different dishes. We started off drinks while waiting for our food. The classic margarita was on point & the beer was light & crisp. As for appetizers, we tried their chips & salsa & guacamole. The chips were light & crispy. Salsa was flavorful & guac tasted home made. We shared the Ahi tuna Pacifico & the Shrimp ceviche. These dishes were plated beautifully. The ahi tuna & shrimp were fresh. The marinade on the ahi tuna had a distinctive taste at first but I got used to it kept digging into it with my spoon. The shrimp ceviche was packed with flavor. As for tacos, I had the fish taco & hubby had the carnitas. Both were good but I definitely liked the fish taco better. It was the best I've had. The tortilla was watery but it didn't break off at all while I was eating it which was amazing. Lastly for dessert, we tried one of each on the menu which were the chocoflan & tres leches. Both weren't that great. Tres leches was a bit too sweet for my liking & the flan was dry. All in all, I enjoyed the vibe & ambiance. I would come back to try their other dishes.

Yelp
Absolutely loved it! We chose Butterfly as our Dine LA pick for the night, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. During Dine LA, we like to try restaurants we haven't visited before, and Butterfly did not disappoint. The food was outstanding. We'd been to this location before when it was a different restaurant, so we already knew it was a beautiful spot atop The Shay Hotel. This time, we scored a perfect poolside table with a gorgeous sunset view. On top of that, knowing it's owned by José Andrés--a personal hero--made the evening even more special. We'll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This little gem of a rooftop restaurant is part of a hotel in Culver City. Such a great spot for small bites and yummy Mexican style dishes! Their queso Fundido is beyond!

Yelp
Don't flutter by! Drop in and give 'em a try! Butterfly Restaurant is part of the José Andrés Group. It opened at The Shay in December of 2024. There's Valet Parking for the Hotel. Rate is $18 for the first three hours. I don't think it is validated, but I'm not sure. We parked over at the Ivy Station Parking Structure. We ended up being able to secure a 2 HR Validation Ticket from a representative of sorts at a booth there. After lunch, when we passed by, the booth was gone. Thankfully, the validation ticket was good and our parking was free. Butterfly Restaurant is located on the rooftop, 6th Floor, of The Shay Culver City Hotel. A few steps after you exit the elevator, you'll be at the restaurant. It's hard to miss all the butterflies! There is a pool up here where guests have to walk through the restaurant to get there. I think it would be awkward dressed for the pool and walking amongst diners. On the other hand, the restaurant is completely open on the side where the pool is. You get the breezy outdoorsy vibe inside the restaurant. There's also an outdoors seating section just before the pool area. What we shared: *Guacamole - it is served in a fun Pig painted molcajete and comes with chips. *Chips & Salsa - have to buy it if you want some salsa. It wasn't very spicy, but had a good flavor. I love the chips they serve here! Too bad Chips & Salsa isn't complimentary, though! *Ceviche Citricos - comprised with bass, citrus pineapple-habanero marinade, jicama, & fresno chiles. I would get this again! The Citrus includes small pieces of grapefruit and oranges. Such a refreshing ceviche! *Carnitas Taco - comes with confit pork, avocado salsa verde, pork rinds, onions, & cilantro on top of a blue corn tortilla. Those Pork Rinds aka Chicharrons add a nice little crunch! *Pescado Baja California Taco - includes a crispy masa local rockfish, shredded cabbage, chile arbol mayo, crema, & salsa pico. It was good, but I can't say it warrants a $9 price tag. *Chocoflan - it's part chocolate cake and part creamy flan sitting on a vanilla coffee caramel. Delicious way to end our meal! I dislike paying for parking, so I'm unsure if we'll return. I'm happy it worked out that we were able to park for free close-by! I would love to return to try their Pozole!

Yelp
Parand and her team were so incredibly attentive, kind, and fun! Made our brunch so special. The food was so yummy and filling, and the drinks were very fun and tasty. Lastly, ambiance was perfect for fun and pretty pictures. We loved the whole experience. Our brunch was at noon, and I did valet parking for the Shay, which was a reasonable price of $20ish. Looking forward to going back!

Yelp
Wish I could write a better review but this was our experience on 8/7 after ordering the DineLA menu. We started with our reservation at 7:15pm. We were a party of 6 and were sat in the corner near the kitchen. It looked like they only had 1 large table so we couldn't have asked to sit in a different area. The ambience was super cute. We saw the sunset and the views were over looking culver city and beyond. Very Picturesque worthy. We started with ordering drinks. Our server was very kind and described each cocktail for us. After we ordered our drinks I took 20/30 minutes until our drinks were brought out and we had to flag to the manager that we were starving and wanted to order. The server did apologize that the bar was backed up but not until we had flagged to the manager that no one has checked in on us. The drinks were mid some people at the table liked theirs others didn't and had to give them back (the paloma and skinny marg) For our first course we all had the guac. It was a small portion but perfect for a single serving and loved how they served individual chips - great portion for those. After we finished the guac it probably took another 20 minutes ish until we got our second course which was the Atun. Pretty good flavor and decent portion as well. But oh my gosh it felt like we waited years until we got out main course. Especially because we were sitting next to the kitchen it felt like everyone else was getting their food before us. I ordered the Asada taco which was a good portion and good flavor and left me full but it was luke warm at best and my tortilla was falling apart because of how sougy it was. This leads me to believe it was left out for a good chunk of time before it was served to me. After our main course we waited probably another 20 minutes until our dessert arrived and at this point is was already 9pm it had taken 2 hours from start to finish. And it's not like we were ordering well done steaks that take a long time to make. We're unsure where the disconnect was and why our service took so long. I also felt our waiter never checked in on us the whole 2 hours and didn't refill our water until we ask for the check lol. The cherry on top because we were a group of 6 the restaurant automatically added a 20% tip. Not sure if it's because service already knew they were going to get that automatic tip or if it's because our bill was on the smaller side since we ordered DineLa but really disappointed as this was supposed to be a celebration dinner. With such beautiful ambience I wish I could say I could see myself returning.

Yelp
Tucked away on the 6th floor of The Shay Hotel, Butterfly is a total hidden gem and is part of the José Andrés group, which already sets the bar high! Parking: Valet is $18 for the first 3 hours, but if you're looking to save, there's free street parking nearby within walking distance. The ambiance is stunning with a relaxed, upscale vibe. We dined al fresco, which gave us a lovely view of the poolside deck. It's the kind of place where you can enjoy a nice meal, sip a cocktail, and even catch a game thanks to the TVs around the space. It's absolutely perfect for a chill but classy hangout. The service was great. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by every staff member we encountered. We were seated quickly and our server made sure we were well taken care of throughout the visit. Our food was prepared beautifully and came out at a perfect pace. As for the food.... My boyfriend and I ordered a light meal since we had dinner plans later, but everything we had was seriously delicious. We shared the Atuna Pacifico (a fresh ceviche) with chips, plus the Carnitas and Pollo a la Parilla tacos. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and surprisingly filling. The portions were generous and perfect for sharing. Pro tip: Happy hour is from Monday-Friday (4-6 pm). A great excuse to stop by for a casual hang or a quick bite with drinks! We'll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
We ate here for breakfast a couple times on our recent trip and had great meals both times. The first time we had the butterfly breakfast, bagel and lox and the kids blueberry pancakes. The second time we tried the chilaquiles, avocado toast, and the yogurt, berries and granola. The wait staff were friendly. The portion sizes match the price. The ambiance is nice in the open air patio next to the pool. They have a fire place and heaters when it's chilly.

Yelp
Food was great, tacos were a bit of a surprise considering they were $8 each but they were delicious. Service was quick & the location is great.

Yelp
We hosted a surprise 20th work anniversary celebration here and it was absolutely perfect! The staff did an amazing job at keeping our surprise. Everyone was incredibly attentive and absolutely delightful. The food was spectacular (so much food)! Everything we ordered was amazing, and nothing went to waste because everyone took boxes of food home with them. I highly recommend this place and have already been texting friends that we need to return.

Yelp
New owners for the rooftop bar/restaurant at The Shay Hotel. Pretty good for tapas and light dining. I got their Carnitas Taco and it was juicy with crunchy fried pork skin on top. The Camerones Negro were made with with a strong black garlic sauce that gave it a very savory taste. The Salt and Air Margarita is so good here too. Salted foam on top that takes the margarita to a more elevated level. Service was friendly and helpful in picking out their highly recommended dishes. No validation for parking unfortunately here if you parked valet or a garage.

Yelp
First time trying Butterfly and thought it was great. The guacamole & fried queso dip is a must. In regard to ceviche, I liked the ahi-tuna (except for the grated nuts). The carnitas tacos were probably the best. The service was excellent and all the food came out relatively quick. Cocktails were good, and just the overall ambiance was stunning. I would definitely come back here again.

Yelp
Went late morning on a Saturday. Service was excellent, nice waiter and a very friendly bus boy. The shrimp dish is not to be missed. The guacamole was alright but I wouldn't order it if I returned. My sister and I had the tacos and I also thought they were very good. We shared the flan for dessert, nothing special there. Our margaritas were mixed up by the waiter, and my sister immediately knew something was wrong. This was interesting because I witnessed our waiter trying both with a small straw. Perhaps try different glasses or mark them so you could differentiate in future. It wasn't very busy and a mistake like that really should not have been made. Parking at the hotel was $18 and the attendant was not allowed to take cash! Except for his tip of course.

Yelp
Came to Butterfly for Dine LA this weekend and overall had a wonderful experience! Food: for $25, I got an appetizer (guac and homemade tortilla chips), small ceviche, one fish taco, and a dessert - honestly a great deal, especially compared to their typical menu prices! I was still pretty hungry after but could've ordered another taco or two! Ambiance: located on the rooftop of The Shay, the tables are near the pool area. It's cute & has a hotel-ish vibe Service: service was good! Overall, the only downside is parking. Not sure if they validate for valet but we parked at the nearby Ivy Station structure and it was $18 for ~ 2 hours :(((

Yelp
I think used to be a different bar? Been a year since I've been in the area and regardless it is a great place to watch a sunset and avoid traffic. The Mexican angle they've taken is nice and the agave spirits list is solid. 80F in the winter? Works for me...

Yelp
I came here during restaurant week to try the tasting menu and honestly weren't very impressed. The guacamole, salsa and chips were good, but the tacos were nothing impressive. We did love the chocolate cookie and chocoflan at the end, however.

Yelp
Butterfly , place nice , vibes , hotel guest walk through to hit the pool, kinda weird. FOOD TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT -OVERPRICED , bland nothing flavorful tacos , horrible- watery , guac too limey, queso was cheesy how can you mess cheese up. I eat out 5 days a week , not only do I love a vibey spot , but food tasting good , and portion for the price has to match! The dessert I didn't even care for it was a slither of dessert I had to go eat after I came to eat. Being a Jose Andre's restaurant , you have to do way better SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE !

Yelp
Pretty good food, nice airy vibe. Grossly overpriced & poor service. Very predictable predatory restaurant given it's in a hotel in a corporate block: they have a captive customer base (most of whom are presumably expensing their meals) so they can afford to overcharge. Service took forever, 10 minutes before they took drinks - then another 10 before they told us they were missing an ingredient. A flyer said there would be live music, but there wasn't. Our group's 2 beers came after our meals were served (20 min??). We had 3 different servers / bussers constantly interrupting us and not communicating. Failed to remove the cilantro in certain dishes like we asked. Check took 10+ minutes. The icing on the cake is for a restaurant to charge $400+ for a lunch party of 6 then hand you a credit card reader asking min. 18% only to then say they don't even validate parking (there are no public spots). This would be a decent airport restaurant, but we will not be taking our clientele here again.

Yelp
The yuzu margaritas were excellent! Staff was wonderful. Excellent atmosphere for social drinks.

Yelp
Very disappointing experience. We ordered drinks and they didn't come out until near the end of the meal. The ceviche was incredibly salty and didn't come with anything to eat with (no bread or chips). The chilaquiles were the best thing, and very delicious with perfect sauce. And the drinks that took forever (mezcal marg and a yuzu marg) tasted like beachside well drinks. Very rarely have I not finished a cocktail, but I left 90% of it on the table. Super disappointed because I love Jose Andres' other establishments. Jose, may want to check in on this one.

Yelp
Very relaxed and informal poolside restaurant. Fantastic food and amazing cocktails. The carnitas taco was my favourite and I enjoyed the yuzu margarita. Looking forward to heading back there again soon.

Yelp
Ambiance is great Food and service we very disappointing Tacos were flavorless. Carnitas taco was dry and lukewarm. Garlic shrimp appetizer was lukewarm and soaking in oil not sizzling also lacked flavor. Appetizers came at same time as tacos, they did not course anything. Drinks took forever, came after we had almost finished the food. Was very hard to get servers attention for hot sauce or check.
