"Need a place in Reading Terminal Market for pizza, pasta, and a cheesesteak? Look no further than By George, a counter-service spot that you can easily find by following the scent of marinara. You can't go wrong with anything they put on a long, buttery roll—including our favorite, the Italian Cheesesteak. They also have a solid rotation of thin-crust pizzas, like the Four Cheese Hot Honey that oozes with as much mozzarella as it does a peppery, syrupy glaze, and a super doughy tomato pie." - Candis R. "Downtown is that awkward kid on the playground you only bothered with when they had a toy you really wanted to play with. By George in the Candler Hotel is that shiny toy that makes up for any grievances you have about being downtown. Come for lunch, get a booth right in the center of the restaurant, and look out through big glass windows that show panoramic street views—the Marta streetcar makes cool cameo appearances. For lunch, order a simple grilled cheese and tomato soup or a classic burger and fries. Since the restaurant is housed in an old historic building (circa 1906) with French brasserie vibes, even these solid, get-the-job-done basics just feel like a departure from your normal burger lunch. Finish off lunch with the fluffy Coconut Tres Leches, which is reason enough to think more fondly of downtown. photo credit: Amy Sinclair" - Nina Reeder

Google
Today I got the Stuffed Rigatoni Alla Rosa it was absolutely delicious and I wish they had had it on their menu all the time. It definitely would be my favorite. My husband got the Chicken and Waffle sandwich with fries and he loved it. We're both ready to go back there to eat another GREAT meal.

If I could spend my entire paycheck buying food from here I would. I tell out my out of town friends and family to come here. I send pictures to all my other friends to make them jealous. Everyone in town knows how amazingly good by George’s is. Why are you even continuing to read reviews? It’s got a 5 star rating for a reason.

Food was pretty good. The waiter that served me was very nice and made sure I had everything I needed.

This place was so fun! My family is from out of town and we came here for a little dinner. The food is amazing and the service is super nice just a little wait though since it's a busy friday😁 the owner came to our table and talked to us for a bit then gave my dad a tour of the place. All in all a great place to eat and a great place for the family.

Google
We had an absolutely incredible meal at By George! The French onion soup was pure comfort in a bowl—rich, flavorful, and perfectly cheesy. The pork chop? Easily one of the best I’ve ever had—juicy, tender, and packed with flavor in every bite. The atmosphere was stunning, with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe, and the service was flawless from start to finish. By George hits the perfect trifecta: amazing food, great ambiance, and impeccable hospitality. Can’t wait to return!

Google
My BFF Tina & I always celebrate our birthdays there. We have your “Purple Rain” cocktails! We love them. Food is awesome! And all the waitstaff is great, but we do love Julie! ❤️See you soon!

Google
Me and my husband went here for an anniversary dinner. We both ordered a steak with sides and absolutely LOVED IT!!! I highly recommend that you guys try this place, it’s delicious. They have good flavor and know how to use seasoning. I also ordered this lavender alcohol drink and I don’t even like lavender. I loved the drink and had ordered 2 for myself. This place is a must. We will be going back again.

Google
Came here for Valentines day dinner and it was truly awesome. I had the surf and turf burger and the lady had the stacked meatloaf, along with the gyro dip as our appetizer. All of the food was delicious, service was impeccable and beautiful atmosphere as well. We will certainly be back for more!!

Yelp
I discovered this place a few months ago, and it has become our top choice for dining in the Mon Valley area. Located on the edge of Monesson literally minutes from Belle Vernon's Tri County Plaza, it boasts a riverside location with ample parking. Open six days a week, you'll still want a seventh. On my first visit I ordered the Beans & Greens. It was beyond comforting with rich broth, buttery beans, and fresh kale. My fiancé ordered the special fall themed pasta that featured Gorgonzola, candied pecans, and a maple creme sauce that has left us both dreaming of it for months. It was in fact the best pasta dish either of us had ever tasted. The Brussels sprout side dish is spot on and a must try for sprout lovers. On our much anticipated second visit, I ordered the lobster bisque and pork chop, while my fiancé ordered the chicken Marsala. The pork chop was prepared to utter perfection and the accompanying risotto was absolutely scrumptious. The lobster bisque is super rich and eye rollingly indulgent. I licked the bowl. The chicken Marsala was tender, smothered in mushrooms and wine sauce, and was completed by beautifully sautéed fresh vegetables. Give By George a chance and you will not regret it!

Yelp
This was my first time at By George. My Chicken Marsala was cooked perfectly and the marsala sauce was delicious along with the garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable and our waitress was very friendly . Excellent service and food

Nichanant A.

Yelp
Great food. This place has the best chicken Marsala My son is 2 and he is very picky at this age but he loves food there

Nick T.

Yelp
Best restaurant in the area, hands down. Always great service with even better food and drinks. The interior of the restaurant is always spotless. Gyro dip with warm pitas is a must for an appetizer. The menu offers a great variety of dishes at different price ranges and they are always innovating with a few new and exciting specials every week!

Yelp
An absolute gem. Makers Mark Manhattan was excellent...elegant single crystal ice ball and perfect balance. Consistent too..both were yummy. At the table we started with the bean and greens appetizer--buttery well seasoned light sauce with fresh bread buns for dipping. Five of us happily shared it until the fight broke out over who would lick the dish bottom. Yep. That good. I had the meatball bake--thick sauce, sausage pieces, sliced pepperoni rings, and cheeeeese that wouldn't quit. Side of pasta. Couldn't finish it--too generous of a portion. Chicken marsala looked wonderful. Shrimp skewer. Berkshire pork chop. Salmon. All perfect. Will make this a regular stop every trip to SE area of Pittsburgh. Best Italian dish in a long, long time. Service was excellent, too.

Alex S.

Yelp
The food was phenomenal, and we loved the atmosphere. This makes the second place in Bel Vernon that we love. This is why this town is a waypoint on our annual trip.

Johnny A.

Yelp
Excellent service. Now I can agree with the comments from others. You can be standing there for a few minutes until they pay you any mind to have you seated. But once I was at my table. Service was pretty fast. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo. I also had to glasses of angels envy. I would definitely come back again.

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Thanks to my friend Lauren for suggesting this place, we loved it! Everything from the appetizers to the dessert were spot on. Local beer selection, nice portion sizes, reasonable prices, and even local lamb! Restaurant was very clean, and our waitress was super nice. We will definitely be back! Convenient location off of Rt.70 Also, 3% added to credit card purchases, bring cash if you are able to!

Dan D.

Yelp
really good food and service. I did not expect this in the more rural area that it's located. Give it a try.

Andrew G.

Yelp
This gem did a party of 6 wonders and made one of the better buffalo chicken salads I've had! When traveling with a large group of people, it's always nice to feel welcomed and readily sat and served, even on a night that was fairly busy. The drinks were great - kind of a sucker for a large list of mules and the raspberry mule was really, REALLY good. Not a big person on sweeter cocktails, this was just the right amount of sweet and had to have two. Rarely do I struggle with what to get from a menu, and everything looked fantastic, and all the food that came out of the kitchen looked fantastic. Since my family is from Western Pennsylvania, the offer of a steak or chicken salad with fries or tots in the salad was a most go for and the tots in the buffalo chicken salad was SO GOOD. Croutons whos? The greens were fresh, the grilled chicken was juicy, the tots were crisp and the dressing was SO good. All of my party enjoyed their food and beverages - especially the local beers. Fantastic and hope I get to come back!

Yelp
Great food and great service! Enjoy the bar and the libations...if you're lucky you can actually meet George the owner...

Vincent T.

Yelp
I don't know why I waited so long for my first visit, but I swear that I was really taken aback by how much I enjoyed their food. I had their pork chop, it was well seasoned, and so very juicy, top notch indeed. Rich pilaf and mixed veggies sides accented it very well too. Also took a takeout gyro salad for lunch the next day, and it was spectacular. I highly recommend.

Mary B.

Yelp
Our server Julie was excellent, funny and attentive. We loved the gyro dip and the appetizer of grape leaves were the best I ever had. Partner said the prime rib was delicious as was the cheesecake. The ambiance was nice as they didn't seat anyone on top of the next table.

Nicole B.

Yelp
By George never misses. The dinners are excellent and huge portions. Salads, gyros, and sandwiches are great. The service is always 5 stars. Beautiful restaurant.

Kelly K.

Yelp
Food is good. Wish they took reservations and they seem to have a lot of rules like everyone has to be there to be seated cannot even be missing one person.

Kirsten P.

Yelp
The feta dip is probably the best appetizer I've had in a while. I brought it to my sisters and she is not obsessed too.

Samantha S.

Yelp
Amazing salads, chicken, and gyro meat. Love their grape leaves, too! Can't wait to go back and try more.

Barry D.

Yelp
Decent food but not worth the price, especially in Monessen. Almost $100 bill for 2 people is crazy for the area

Michael B.

Yelp
The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, courteous servers, friendly owners, and outstanding cuisine. However, be prepared for a brief wait, which is well worth it.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
The food is always awesome. The gyro dip is exceptional. The grape leaves make me very happy (vegetarian, warm, lemon). The salads are HUGE. The chicken sandwich is fabulous no matter which way you get it. I'm a fan of the Greek Pasta dish. I am ALWAYS up to going to By George's :)

Linda C.

Yelp
We had Salmon meal & Chicken Marsala; excellent food with great service. Oreo cake, definitely home-made, best ever had!! Very comfortable restaurant setting; will visit again for special dinner; today was husband's birthday!! Highly recommend!

Brinna B.

Yelp
Tried this out based on reviews and was not disappointed. I ordered the old bay and shrimp flatbread while my boyfriend ordered the surf n turf burger. My flatbread was crispy and delicious! I didn't even take a moment to snap a pic. The boyfriend said that his burger was pretty good but his French fries were spectacular. Our server was great, along with the decor. Would recommend this place to anyone in the area.

Jay D.

Yelp
For an update...things are just as good, if not better, than they were in our previous experiences. I felt it necessary to update and rate accordingly. The service is still fantastic, and the food was extraordinary. This time around, although some of our past favorites were still ordered, we tried some new things I wanted to give a shout-out about. This time around, I tried their steak special, which consisted of an 18oz Ribeye, paired with a delicious mushroom sauce, and horseradish mash and asparagus. It was unbelievable. It was cooked exactly as I had ordered it, and was seasoned excellently. So many times in the past at other restaurants, whenever I would order a steak such as this (on the bone), there would be spots that were either over done, or underdone. Not here! They cooked it PERFECT. This goes for the Berkshire Pork Chop, as well. Unreal how good it is. The other "new" try for us was their homemade gnocchi, and the Surf and Turf Burger. As for the gnocchi, they were also cooked to perfection--not little gum balls like i've had in other restaurants that claim their gnocchi is homemade. Delicious! The Surf and Turf burger (their wonderful burger topped with shrimp, and their home made old bay cream sauce) is to die for. I wish we could get some of the sauce to take home and eat on EVERYTHING. By George is doing things right! Can't wait to go back again!

John W.

Yelp
What a great restaurant! Food was tremendous and the service was 5 star. We ate the bar and the bartender was as good as you can get - knowledgeable and friendly and knows how to mix a drink!!'

Sam L.

Yelp
Pick this place based on reviews on line. We went for diner. Though we would have to walk out because no one acknowledged us waiting to be seated. The place was almost empty. About 6 guests. About couple minutes in someone finally notice us standing there and seated us. Wife had a steak salad and I had the salmon salad with Cesar dressing. We agreed that our salads were good but nothing to write home about.

Rachel T.

Yelp
Went to dinner there on a Monday night. It was my first time there. As soon as I walked in we were greeted by the hostess. She sat us right away. My first impression was how loud the establishment was. The waitress was quick to get our drinks. But, she didn't offer any alcoholic drinks. We didn't realize there was a bar until we were about to leave. For appetizers we had the pretzels with cheese sauce. The pretzels were delicious and unique. They were buttery and flaky. The cheese sauce was bland and didn't have much flavor. For entrees: I had the french onion soup. The soup was delicious and wasn't greasy at all. It had nice seasoning to it. It was one of the better ones I had. I also had the shrimp and chicken with asparagus. The portion was huge and ended up taking half home. A little disappointed I couldn't order extra sauce for the chicken. Also, the asparagus wasnt roasted with any seasoning, it was just oil. My significant other had the steak burger. It came with thick cut bacon. He said it was good. Reasoning for 4 stars: can be pretty loud when it's half full, cheese sauce and asparagus wasn't seasoned well, very limited menu for people have dairy allergies (just about everything had butter or cream on it), didn't offer anything from the bar.

Pamela D.

Yelp
My husband and I eat out a lot! From Pgh to Monessen! By George is a gem of a place located in Monessen. Really good food...my husband loves their Rueben's and I love their salmon salad! Great service and a very nice restaurant. Will be eating there again!!

Chris B.

Yelp
I suggest trying everything they have to offer on their menu! Everything is delicious and prepared with fresh, quality ingredients. They have great daily specials and offer a wide variety of options on their main menu. There is definitely something for everyone! The French onion soup is THE BEST and the brussel appetizer is my favorite!

Toni F.

Yelp
By George never fails to impress. The Peach Pork Teriyaki was on point. The tender, succulent chop paired well with the ginger-apricot teriyaki sauce. And the peaches on top really enhanced the flavor. The rice pilaf was the best I've ever had.

Sara L.

Yelp
Cute place we visited before a playoff game at Monessen high school. Plenty of options on the menu. Food was average. Service was average. Nothing to write home about, but if in the area, it's not a bad option.

Kevin B.

Yelp
This was my first time here. It is only 5 minutes from my house and I didn't even know it was their until I did a Google search for places to eat near me. It sits back off the main road which is probably never really noticed it. I started out with the cheese wedges which were really good. Then I had a house salad which was also good. And for the entrée I had the meat ravioli. Over all the meal was good. I will be going back to try other things such as a steak. The atmosphere is pleasant and the waiter that waited on me was nice and got me another drink when he noticed I was getting low.

Kristine H.

Yelp
What a gem! So glad we drove the extra five or so minutes off the highway to go to By George! Upscale and quaint is how I would describe this establishment. We chose to sit at the bar where Jon and Luke took wonderful care of us. Jon was so friendly and helpful with his menu recommendations. :) We opted for sharing the following: homemade New England clam chowder, dinner salad with feta, and a pork chop entree with sides of vegetable medley and golden Yukon mashed potatoes. All was delicious and the pork chop was amazing (wish I knew how it was prepared so I could try to duplicate at home)! Another high point for us was we were able to get our favorite beer, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, on draft. We typically can't find this on draft local to us in central Indy. If we find ourselves in the area of By George again, we will make a point to return!

Jac S.

Yelp
If you haven't had their lamb chops and mashed potatoes I highly recommend that you put your order in right away! They have the best lamb chops ever! They are perfection! And the service is amazing you won't be disappointed.

Jeffrey A.

Yelp
Excellent service ,good food, great atmosphere. Highly recommend, put this on your bucket list.

Jean B.

Yelp
Delicious food. Great service. Enjoyed the local draft beer selection, lobster bisque, meatball bake.

Natalie R.

Yelp
Best food in the valley My favorites are the beans and greens, combo plates and amazing fries

Jim H.

Yelp
The food was good and the service was OK coming out of the last pandemic surge in October. Four of us dined and drank on Saturday evening. We had a good size bill. We tipped much more than a recommended amount. Reviewing the bill I saw a credit card service fee. It was very small, but the disclosure says it will be charged if larger than their cost of acceptance. I contacted the restaurant through their website to determine how much would need to be spent to cover the cost, but no response. Not great customer followup service.

Heaven C.

Yelp
This place recently moved back to its original location with a fresh remodel. The inside is spacious and the new decor is nice. Bathrooms were clean. We were seated immediately even with a full parking lot. Our server was on point. She was quick and very kind. She wasn't a server that asks you how everything is when your mouth is full of food. Now my nephew and I ordered a surf and turf burger that was cooked to perfection! That old bay cream sauce made the burger. The flavor was just delicious. My daughter ordered the shrimp skewer with the garlic mashed potato de jour. Her mashed potatoes were amazing, so was the garlic bread. Even though we were stuffed, we split a chocolate lava cake. I wasn't really wowed by it. It tasted a little overdone, almost like it was made in a microwave. I wish we would have tried a cheesecake instead. But, this place still rates 5 stars in my book. I feel like the dessert was a fluke. Try out By George! You will not be disappointed!

Rachel O.

Yelp
Handsome husband and I can't get enough of By George's and their Gyro Salad! This is no skimpy salad. They load on so much meat that the salad can last you two meals. By George's is hands down our favorite places to eat in the Mon Valley. Everything on the menu we've had is delicious. We are so glad that we can get takeout from them during this crazy time for us all.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
A friend told us about this place 2 years ago. We have never gone here. Finally we decided to visit the place. During quarantine while it was shut down. The food was amazing as described. The place inside was very larger. Larger than I had imagined. I can't wait to go back when I can dine in.

Kurt P.

Yelp
I do not recommend this business for large groups. We were under the impression that they had a party space. We ask to reserve it for a party of 20 and we're told that they do not take reservations for the party space. I am so tired of incompetent restaurants. Covid has turned the restaurant business into a shit show. They are shelled shocked from the experience and have not been able to bounce back.

Roger V.

Yelp
The thing that really stands out about this place is how clean and spotless the dining area and bar is. The food is well prepared in a timely manner, and the service is friendly and professional. In fact, the lady who typically takes my order made it a point to get to know me after only a couple visits, and typically knows what I want ahead of time. Nice menu selection, spotless dining room, and professional, friendly service!

Zach O.

Yelp
Friends and colleagues have been recommending for years, and it turns out for good reason. This new building is well set up and you feel welcome by the staff. The surf and turf burger was outstanding! Love the old Bay cream sauce on the sandwich. Shrimp Alfredo was also delicious, and can't wait to try more pasta. I wouldn't call this a la carte kind of place, but several items don't have sides, but the prices are very reasonable you barely notice.

Malin L.

Yelp
The food is outstanding! The service was attentive despite being a packed house! We have a new favorite!

Jason V.

Yelp
First meal back from a year long deployment. i had the ribeye with french fries and broccoli. The ribeye was edge to edge medium rare, broccoli was actually steamed and not soggy and grey, it had a wonderful crunch to it. The fries were good as well. Bartender was excellent, she made a killer old fashioned and a great manhattan.

Ed R.

Yelp
Best Pork Chop. Probably the best place to eat in the Valley nowadays for quality food at reasonable price.

Bill M.

Yelp
From the outside it would be easy to drive by this place but thanks to a friends recommendation we decided to check this out, make sure to check out all of their "famous" choices, both the gyro dip and the pork chop were amazing. Highly recommend this place if you're ever in the area.

Elise C.

Yelp
By George's is great I got spaghetti it was good 10/10 totally recommend to everyone.

Ken T.

Yelp
Came here this weekend because we were in the area. It's a little gem off the beaten path, but well worth it if you're looking for a break from all the different chain options out there. We tried it for a late lunch on a Saturday and by the time we left around 5pm there was a line to the door, so it's apparently pretty popular locally. They do have a ton of space to accommodate a crowd and the seating is quite comfortable. Their menu features pasta, sandwiches, various meat options, and a number of greek-inspired options. The saganaki appetizer is highly recommended and was a bit of a surprise considering they lit it on fire when it came out. It was absolutely delicious. Our entrees were just as good and the service throughout was solid. It's a bit out of the way for me normally but is definitely on my radar if I'm ever passing that way again.
