CÀ PHÊ RANG

"This collaboration between Chef Matty Matherson and his mentor Rang Nguyen has established itself as a firm favorite on Spadina for lovers of Vietnamese food. One bite of the banh mi with succulent roasted pork and you’ll be transported back to Ho Chi Minh City on that backpacker’s trip you once took. The bowls of pho will warm the bones and gladden the heart – the sliced rare beef is well worth ordering – and the chicken wings are cooked to order in a kitchen that appears to be almost the same size as the dining area. The prices are fair, the service helpful and efficient and the room has a colorful, bright, laid-back vibe. For a quick refuel or a bite with friends, this little place might just hit the spot." - Michelin Inspector

Cà Phê Rang is an excellent spot with delicious food and warm, friendly service. The pho is solid, but the banh mi is even better—especially if you dip it in the soup trust me, it rocks. The only downside is the pricing. It’s not outrageous, but you’re definitely paying a bit for the hype. That said, I’ve been here many, many times. It’s worth checking out—but know that you can find equally good Vietnamese food elsewhere in Toronto for less.

Wow. What an amazing and filling meal. I loved the no frills, down to earth energy and vibes. The coconut shrimp rice paper roll was delicious, crunch and bursting with flavour. I shared a mushroom and a prawn banh mi with my friend and both were superb. A bit much on the garlic but I didn’t mind. Vegan friendly place and really just a friendly place! Can’t wait to go back to try all the rice paper rolls!

I had the rare beef Pho. It was one of the best I've ever had. The service is fast and friendly. I dinged the atmosphere because it's a small restaurant that didn't seem to have air conditioning. Very warm inside. Also, I was basically sitting with the people at the table next to me. All in all, great place.

Google
We were excited to try this award winning restaurant. Great place for some pho and vermicelli. It was like any other Vietnamese restaurant. Very friendly staff and fast kitchen. Open kitchen concept where you can see the cooks do their thing. The Proteins are cooked very well. Lemongrass Chicken was done so good. Prices are reasonable for the portion. Clean comfortable facility. Clean washrooms too. Nicely decorated interior with very chill vibes. Patio seating available. No credit card surcharge. Free WiFi. Really like the menu cover design.

The food here was excellent! I will definitely swing by again when I'm visiting. My Bahn Mi was delicious and the Chrysanthemum Salad was a unique dish that is worth trying. I'd also recommend the iced coffee.

I come here every week and usually have pho. The staff are very enthusiastic and friendly. The space here is pretty nice, and they play R&B music. The pho is amazing, and everything is just fine. It’s a good spot if you plan to hang out with friends in the evening since I noticed they have both cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks on the menu. Everything here is quite worth trying. I’ll definitely come back more often.

Literally a gem in the heart of the city, on the busy streets of Spadina this restaurant delivers on every point. Their chicken wings as appetizers was a dish that'll send any foodie into a coma. It is perfectly breaded, seasoned beautifully and gives a taste of satisfaction that is all too good. Next was the Pho. When they brought this out couldnt believe my eyes the size of the bowl it came in. The flavours were wonderful and had an emphasis on freshness. Also wanted to add that the service here was excellent along with the vibes is a homerun. If you are in the city looking for a great meal this is the place

Google
A bit over hyped. The food was good but not worth the price. The chicken wings were really good and the beef broth was the best Ive had but all the meat was dry. In the banh mi and pho. Fresh rolls were very small portions. The servers were very nice as well. Full credit to them.

Yelp
Ca Phe Rang located along Spadina near Richmond is a Vietnamese eatery opened by celebrity chef Matty Matheson and Rang Nguyen. The restaurant serves up a variety of pho, banh mi sandwiches, and starters in a casual atmosphere. I've wanted to try Ca Phe Rang for a while now but was quite shocked at the expensive prices when the restaurant opened years ago. Despite the expensive price tag, I decided to try Ca Phe Rang for lunch one time. I stopped by on a Friday around noon where the restaurant was half full. Service was friendly and quick. I ordered the following dishes: - Pork belly fresh roll (rice paper, carrot, daikon, lettuce, Thai basil, cucumber, and crispy pastry) - $13.95 - Sliced rare beef pho (beef broth, rice noodles, onion, cilantro) - $22.95 In terms of the food, the fresh roll was unique, it was filled with ingredients which worked well together. I've never had a fresh roll quite like this and the crispy pastry worked well together with all the components of the dish. The fresh roll came with 2 fresh rolls (cut into 4 pieces total where I could only finish one forth of a roll) - I took home the rest for later. The pho was decent - large portion!, I liked the fact that they used fresh pho noodles but the broth lacked that depth of flavour you expect from a bowl of pho. Moreover, the beef slices were kind of chewy. Overall, the fresh roll was unique but you can find better pho elsewhere around Chinatown. Services and vibes were good though!

Yelp
I have to admit one of reasons we came here is because we're fans of the tv show, The Bear, and one of its stars, Matty Matheson, is part-owner. This place is located in downtown Toronto, along a street lined with restaurants. It's a small but cozy place with seating inside and out. We found inside was a little stuffy, so we ate outside on a very mild evening. It's a great spot to relax, have some food, and people watch. Although banh mi sandwiches are their specialty, we were in the mood for pho. The pho comes in regular and large sizes, and regular was more than enough for me. They give you lots of meat and noodles. It's was delicious and satisfying, although the broth did not have as rich a flavor as other places I've tried. The crispy spring rolls were pretty good but not as crispy as I would have liked. Although our server was really friendly, the service was kinda slow. Luckily we weren't in any hurry. Overall, it's a nice spot for casual Vietnamese food.

Yelp
I'm surprised this spot doesn't have at least 4.4 stars. I admit the price is a slighly steeper than other Viet joints, but it also offers a cleaner, more intentional execution. Young crew, curated menu, good vibes, it's a modern take on a classic. If you're ever around and have a 25 min on your hand, I'd highly recommend you take the time to stop and go in. I know I'll be back to complete the menu. It might become my go to post-movie snack.

Yelp
You've come here to read reviews on Vietnamese food but allow me to throw you a curveball: CHICKEN WINGS. Ca Phe Rang makes my favourite chicken wings in the city--crunchy, sticky, sweet, savoury, spicy, just drool-worthy wings that are perfect every time. Sure--pho, banh mi, cold rolls...whatever. All good. But what keeps me coming back here are those addictive wings.

Yelp
My review is based on heated up, take out brisket pho($13). When I received the delivery, at first I was disappointed by around 600ml much broth and small portion size looking noodles. However once I reheated and put them together, there was plenty of food. Especially 5-6 big chunks of briskets made a big difference because normally I would get sliced, thin beef form from other pho restaurants. Unfortunately rice noodles were reheated, therefore I cannot review the doneness of noodles. Their broth was dark, full of flavour, clean almost like consommé. I enjoyed it very much. Some people might find it bland I am guessing it's because this broth is not heavy on msg? Breaded Chinken Wings($17) were fantastic. They made this magical super sweet caramelized fish & tamarind sauce that I cannot even figure out why it is so much better than similar type of orher syrupy sweet sauce. Wow... I personally made this type of sauce for chicken or ribs myself but mine was never this great! Wings also came with chili mayo dip which I did not bother to dip in.

Yelp
I was out and about in the downtown core and I was in the mood for something I could eat on the go, so Ca Phe Rang seemed like an excellent option. I decided to go with the Pork Bánh Mì and I got the 1/2 sandwich version. I'll admit I was kind of thrown by the $10 price tag, as banh mi's are notoriously cheap sandwiches and this wasn't even a full sandwich! And indeed, my first couple of bites did little to assuage my skepticism. I didn't detect much flavor and the fresh herbs kept falling out of the sandwich. As I kept eating, though, the sandwich just got better and better -- with the plentiful, tender pieces of pork complemented beautifully by a delicious sauce and the requisite pickled veggies. If the whole sandwich had been as good as those bites, I'd easily be proclaiming this one of the best banh mis I'd ever eaten. As it is, though, I'd call it a very above-average one that could use some work in terms of consistency.

Yelp
This pho spot stands out not just for the depth of its broth, but also for the bold punch it packs. The broth, rich in aroma yet simple, stole my heart. The toppings are a noticeable delight, enhancing every bite. While the prices, especially for the Banh Mi sandwiches, may seem a bit steep, the generous portions make it all worthwhile. A must-try for anyone craving authentic flavors.

Yelp
Checked out this place before a TIFF movie. Place is small and quaint with not a lot of seating. Ordered the Brisket Bahn Mi to start. The brisket meat was cubed. Sandwich was good overall but the bun wasn't crusty like how a good Banh Mi are traditionally but rather soft which was not the best choice. We also ordered the Pho dip on the side but they missed bringing it to us the first time around. We should of probably skipped this since we ordered our Pho! lol Next I ordered the brisket Pho. The broth was decent, and I liked the noodles they used. Brisket meat was the same cubed meat as the Banh Mi. There was only one size and it was on the pricier side for the portion size. Unfortunately for my friend who found a big fly in her pho which was disappointing. Our server genuinely felt bad and we felt bad because it happens sometimes but it definitely killed the mood. She was nice enough to remove that item from our bill. Overall it was ok place and I would go back if I was at Spadina looking for Viet but I wouldn't go out of my way. PS I would give a 3.5/5 stars if I could.

Yelp
Food is good, but menu design made me confused. I thought that I can order a noodle soup and add $4 for other food, and it will become combos A, but end up I paid for 2 meals. I love the pork bahn Mi most. It is full of meat, sour radish and coriander. The bread is crispy. The pork is juicy and tastes like Chinese suckling pig. Staff is friendly. Anyway because of the delicious food, I still recommend this restaurant. Just be careful on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the assorted cold cuts Banh mi today. I got the spicy version. Opted for the combo which comes with a pop and side of pho broth for $4 more. My walk was about 15 minutes home where I ate. Unfortunately in that time my Banh mi bun had started to become soggy. Same problem with it as with the Banh mi I had at Rustle and Still. There's just too much salad packed in with the meats. The moisture of the salad gets squeezed out into the bun which loses the characteristic crispy texture and becomes cold tasteless mush. It was wrapped tightly together which made things worse. This was at the hinge part of the bun mainly. Because the salad portion also lacks seasoning, its bulk also overwhelms the flavours of the cold cuts. Take the example of a trad Banh mi with a small amount of carrot as garnish to the meats and I'll be much happier. Huge plus with this lunch was the pho broth as a side! Omg it was a saviour countering the bland yet spicy sandwich with delectable deep salty elixir flavours that pho broth can elicit. I didn't dip omg that's silly and instead sipped it between bites. Thanks to the side for single handedly saving the meal!

Yelp
We've ordered pho 3 times now and the consistency has been spot on. The broth has been incredibly flavourful and satisfying. It's not a huge portion so don't expect extra large; I'd say it's more of a medium size. We live close by so the soup is always nice and hot. They forgot the accoutrements one time. It was disappointing. If you're getting take-out, peek in your bag to make sure you've got your sprouts and stuff!

Yelp
Disclaimer: before I came here, I had only had pho 3 times in my life before, none of which were particularly life changing - however clearly pho is a soup with unlimited potential. We stopped in here for a quick bite and given the cold rainy weather this was the natural choice. The piping hot broth, tender meat, and chewy noodles all came together in a beautiful way I had never experienced before with pho. Most places I've been to, the broth is bland and the meat is fatty / chewy and overall low grade. However the broth here was absolutely delicious, the meat was very lean yet still tender - overall it was so good I could've eaten it with no sauce, it was the best pho I've had. On the side, they serve hoisin sauce, hot sauce, chili oil, and garlic vinegar which all work wonderfully together to further enhance the flavours of the dish. Overall, it was a meal I loved and will look forward to again. The only qualms were that the inside is extremely small, and my girlfriend mentioned the prices were much higher than the pho / banh mi spots down the street - and she gave it 4 stars. But until I try more vietnamese food and get a handle for the cuisine, I'll give this spot 5 stars in my books.

Yelp
This place was great. Didn't actually get any pictures because I was eating on the go, but we got 3 options of fresh rolls (mushroom, red ham and shrimp) as well as chicken Bahn mi. We got take out so I can't speak to the service or the ambiance but I digress. Honestly, the fresh rolls were the best I had ever had. The inclusion of crispy rice paper was cool and gave texture, and the peanut sauce was so so so good. The bahn mi was not traditional, or particularly big, but over all it was a really good sandwich and I enjoyed it. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Tried the classic cold cut banh mi with pho dip for dine in. The ingredients are definitely good quality and very fresh. The price for the banh mi is very steep (~4x the price of Nguyen Huong) but I wouldn't say this spot is exponentially better. They have a lot of staff working and make a lot of the elements in house so that explains the price. Because there's so much pickled carrots/daikon and fresh herbs, the flavours of the cold cuts were almost all lost in each bite, but when tasted on its own, was good. The pho broth dip that comes with the banh mi isn't very hot but is a nice concept to add flavour. This is a counter service spot: if you're dining in, you'll be seated with a menu then you go to the counter to order and pay first, get your table number and servers will bring you your order. There's a self-serve water station as well.

Yelp
5 stars for brisket banh mi, 3 stars for pho. The brisket banh mi is the showstopper here. Juicy, flavourful, everything you want in a banh mi and more. Pho was disappointing. The soup smelled really good but wasn't that flavourful. Pho noodles were also undercooked (but maybe on purpose since it was takeout). Either way, you can get pho for half the price and twice as good one block north in Chinatown. Would come back for a banh mi. Pass on the pho.

Yelp
They messed up my delivery order. The sandwich got soaked because the pho wasn't packed properly. They then promised to issue a refund, but didn't! Bahn Mi boys, which is really close by ,offers an amazing better bahn mi sandwich for like less than half of the cost. I've also never had a problem. We emailed back and forth for weeks and they promised to sort it out. They said the refund was in the process of issuing on my credit card and to just be patient, their proof was an internal 3rd party point of sale screenshot, that looked like it could have been made in Microsoft word... showing a refund. Then I waited a few weeks and it never came through. I emailed and called to ask about what was going on and never heard back. I provided them proof that my delivery app still showed it hadn't refunded. I'm kinda disappointed it has required so much effort for a mere $20 refund. Also, kind of upset at being ghosted after spending so much money here. Shows they don't really value their customers. Which is upsetting when they are a higher priced establishment. Plus, I'd rather they refuse to offer me a refund... then tell me they will and never follow though. Review Update: They responded 4 months later for some reason... they sent an email with a screenshot showing their point of sale system issuing a refund (like they did 4 months ago) and said I was wrong. The refund "proof" was not very convincing or official to be honest and could have been made with Microsoft Word as mentioned earlier. It's also a 3rd party system. I on the other hand gave them 1st party in-app screenshots from the delivery app showing a balance that wasn't refunded. I also countered with a video of me navigating the UberEats app and comparing a refunded order vs. their order (which wasn't refunded). I have also called uberEats and they told me the order was not refunded. I've also checked my credit card statement. I knew they thought on their side it was refunded. Doesn't change the fact that it never went through. I've spent enough time on this and getting riled up about it again is not what I want over $20. I've ordered from this place a ton. It's frustrating they are giving me a hard time over twenty dollars. Even if they couldn't figure out why it was refunded on their side and not mine, as loyal customer they should give me the benefit of the doubt and not make me jump through hoops. I also provided both screenshot and video evidence. But, I don't understand why they dug up the past. A 4 month wait to be given the same info I got the last email is more upsetting than being ghosted to be honest. Now I realize even though I responded with more evidence, they weren't open to a dialogue as they said they "considered the matter closed". So I guess it was more wasted time. And I've been ghosted again. A close to a half year wild goose chase over $20.

Yelp
Decent spot for Vietnamese food. It has a small and focused quick-serve menu, offering mostly banh mi, pho, and side dishes. The vegetarian banh mi contained mushrooms and eggplant pate which was pretty good, but I wish they put less sauce. The other dishes were okay.
google avatar

Mandeq H.

Yelp
The servers here are so kind and give great recommendations. The drinks are pretty solid, especially the Master Rangs secret drink. If you like sweet cocktails you'll love this. The decor and music is nice too. My main gripe is the food. While not bad at all, it's not amazing. The chicken wings are a little too sticky sweet and the pho is okay. There is better nearby.
google avatar

Dekko C.

Yelp
Ca Phe Rang was very welcoming and has great friendly staff. Sausage roll was excellent, works very well with the sauce, this was my favourite. Brisket Bahn-mi was my second favourite, very flavourful and still has a bite to it, works very well with the herbs. The pho was a little sad, the beef, brisket and soup was great but we got what i assumed to be bottom of the bag noodles. Short, broken, and over cooked noodles. Hopefully, it's just a one off? I still like the place but stars are taken off. Might come back to try the wings.
google avatar

Sue J.

Yelp
Surprisingly pretty good! Good broth as others have mentioned. Small pho was perfectly portioned for me- hotness was awesome- piping hot to cook my rare beef and noodles were great texture. Came out with plenty of basil and other greens... I only tried the pho but usually is a good scaling basis for a resto. Really happy to have walked in. Will come back soon. The low ish star rating has kept me away until now (at the time was only 3.5 stars, but it's based on people's opinions on delivery quality and pricing of ban mi- and such bad ratings on Google! Wow! So confused. Service was fine for me, but it was a slow Thursday night). I think it's solid. Recommend.

Eula B.

Yelp
Heard about this place because of their chicken wings from a friend so i ended up trying it. Ordered the chicken wings, brisket banh mi and prawn spring roll with peanut sauce. The prawn spring rolls were really good. I think the peanut sauce carried the dish because it was so creamy and peanuty which is what I like. The brisket was flavourful and the bread was nicely baked and crunchy. The chicken wings for me was just okay. They were crunchy but it felt like there was an after taste to it that was acquired for my taste. Overall, I think I'm happy i got to try this place and their dishes!

Oakley M.

Yelp
the pho was very mid we got both of them it was lacking in depth of flavor. with that being said the ban mi was really good. the service was great the servers were helpful and pleasant. the ambiance was a vibe and we dug it for sure. price was fair a little expensive for how the pho was but we love matty so we had to go.

Amy L.

Yelp
Chicken Banh mi was soggy and chicken was mush, all for almost $20. Service was slow and ungracious. Maybe convincing for the hipster crowd, but I would not recommend to the experienced.
google avatar

Angela Y.

Yelp
Chef Rang and Matty Matheson transformed Barria Balam into a cute Vietnamese eatery serving up banh mi's, pho and fresh rolls. I'm a bit sad I didn't get to try the birria tacos before the change but glad I was able to try this. We had: Sausage fresh roll: I actually enjoyed the fresh combination of veggies and herbs in this. The rice paper used to roll was very tender but held everything together and didn't break apart. However the piece of sausage was small and didn't stand out from the herbs and veggies Brisket banh mi: The flavors were nice but the bread wasn't as flakey as I would have liked, and I found the brisket to be dry. The banh mi itself was $15 and I added the pho dip for $3. It was essentially a small bowl of lukewarm broth that didn't do much for the sandwich. Their classic cold cut banh mi was also $15 which I found a bit insulting seeing as Nguyen Hoang Banh Mi shop down the street sells them for $3.50. I was also told that the pate was made in house but not the cold cuts which confused me as to why the price was $15 Rare beef and brisket pho: The broth had alot of rich and deep flavor and I could tell it was cooked for a long time to attain that flavor. The beef brisket was tender and the rare beef was good quality. Unfortunately there was something about the noodles I didn't love. The tables were very small, seating was limited and the ordering system was inefficient. I know that they just opened but I hope they'll work out the kinks for future guests.

Itt V.

Yelp
Good service, uneven tables (multiple of them), and inconsistent quality. I went here multiple times before, it was not that good the first time, but I gave it a second chance after covid and it was very good! Then when I came with another friend a week after it was just so so as the pho soup got a bit saltier. Then when I went on my lunchtime the pho was too salty. Probably one of the few pho places with a cute outdoor dining area downtown but I wouldn't go back now because I just don't know what pho I'll get. The brisket in the pho was good though! If you aren't picky about the pho soup and you like it extra salty then this place is for you.

Carl Y.

Yelp
This place would be 5/5 if it wasn't slightly racist. Food tastes great, staff is somewhat amazing, and the music is always on point, just attitude towards POC needs to be worked on, I think his name was Jeese, my encounter with him wasn't pleasant.
google avatar

Athena B.

Yelp
Came here for takeout during lunch and had good, quick service. The cashier recommended the pork so I got it and it didn't disappoint.
google avatar

Karl L.

Yelp
"What if you cranked up every element of phở experience to 10?" If you have ever wondered that question, then look no further. The interior looked authentic, and the phở came with strong and fatty broth, chewy noodles, and meat slices that packed flavour. My only question is if it was objectively better than other phở I have had over the past decade. I have never associated phở with intense flavours as I have for food like ramen. It is worth a visit.

Dan F.

Yelp
$16.00 for a very light banh mi. If that was the "full" sandwich I would hate to see the half sandwich. They were overwhelmed with to go orders and weren't really taking care of people dining in. Lots of tables sitting open un bussed. I had to go stand at the cashier to get my check so I could go get a real sandwich.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
The first thing I noticed was that the menu was incredibly small. Only had a few items and I was CRAVING vermicelli. In the end Ingot the beef and brisket pho, the serving was decent and the flavours were there... but not the best. I felt that the broth missed that richness and freshness from an abundance of herbs/onions. It just didn't feel the same as the traditional pho spots. The sausage rice roll was very underwhelming in my opinion and I wouldn't get it again.
google avatar

Bianka K.

Yelp
That was honestly the best rare beef pho i have ever eaten. The broth was insane. So much depth and layers of flavour, not to salty . I am normally someone who literally over does it with the hoisin but it honestly didn't need anything else. Also the beef was insanely tender and a delicious high quality cut. We also had the prawn cold rolls and they were soooo bomb. This will def be my got to pho place

bethlehem t.

Yelp
Banh Mi and brisket pho was super tasty! Vibe was very nice and they play good music. Service was good too.
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
Ok I think this is more along the lines of 3.5 stars. The quality has been super inconsistent 7/10 times now. Pho noodles tend to be over cooked, I don't think the starch is washed off pho noodles sometimes because my broth gets cloudy, like I said previously, meat is sometimes dry.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Food was alright, but not outstanding. I did like that the broth wasn't too salty... I enjoyed overall, but I think there are many better places in Toronto for pho.
google avatar

Winnie L.

Yelp
Best soup base for Pho I have ever had. Very humble little place. Good price and portion.

Nora N.

Yelp
I am really curious to try this place but as a Vietnamese person who grew up eating banh mi, I cannot pay $15-17 for a banh mi. That price is just absurd and it keeps me from even giving it a try. And then charging an EXTRA $3 for a tiny bowl of broth to dip it in? Yeah, okay.

Daniel D.

Yelp
i am not a big pho person but this was one of the best i've had, broth was not too salty and the rare beef was flavourful. the brisket banh mi was also really tasty. quite pricey though but i guess everything is these days. overall a good intro for zach to vietnamese food
google avatar

Yelp
I love Vietnamese food and this is an exceptional place to enjoy it! they don't have you Very long menu here but each of the dishes is a gem! I came three times this week!
