Bar Beau, an All-Day Cafe and Bar, Will Open in Williamsburg - Eater NY
"In this week’s Tables for Two, New Yorker critic Hannah Goldfield dips her toes into NYC’s New Orleans-style restaurants from the city’s natives, Carroll Gardens cafe Cafe Booqoo. Cafe Booqoo has “deftly balanced versions of classics like jambalaya and red beans and rice. Inventive takes shine at Booqoo as well, she writes, such as a po’ boy with fried alligator, strawberry relish, and green tomato." - Serena Dai
Stumbled across this place on my way to Ikea. I have family in Baton Rouge and New Orleans and have spent a lot of time in both places. I can honestly say that this place is amazing, like one of the best creole places I've been in both Brooklyn and Louisiana. I had the Marigny - the fried cauliflower po'boy - and it was sooooo good. The bread was almost perfect. The cauliflower was fried perfectly and was even better than most popcorn chicken or fried shrimp I've had. The crystal aioli was delicious and there was some kind of pickled slaw that added the perfect crunch and acid. I only wish there was more of that slaw.
Can't wait to come back for the crawfish mac and cheese and beignets!

The “gumbo” was literally oil/grease (absolutely disgusting and inedible).
The “beignets” were not good, they were too dense and had a weird apple taste.
There was a man sitting at a table buying drugs from another man who walked in while we were eating.
We paid $3 for a drink that says 99¢ on the label (I understand everything is marked up and you need to cover overhead costs but it’s kind of a classless thing to do- it just makes you look like you’re going out of your way to rip people off)
All of that said- the BBQ shrimp sandwich and breakfast sandwich were good (not great).
The service was also really good- if the people working there weren’t so nice, we would have sent back the gumbo and beignets and asked for a refund. Overall, very disappointing for a spending close to $40 on a meal.

Grandaddy Poboy is amazing. The shrimp are cooked perfectly. And great with the spicy onion jam. Had a sample of the crawfish mac and cheese which was also delicious . And of course can't leave without the chicory coffee and beignets for dessert!

A little expensive for the portion size, but tastes great! Love the jambalaya.

I had some solid shrimp 'n grits that were more like New Orleans style barbecue shrimp over grits, and an excellent pecan pie muffin. The latter is certainly worth ordering. I want to go back to try some of the funk po' boys.

I ordered the beignets with vanilla something something sauce and the shrimp and grits. I'm familiar with southern grits but have never had Louisiana style. Fantastic. But I was not ready for the beignets. Don't bring yourself here on a diet, 'cause it will break your resolve! 😆

They don't open as early as they say sometimes on Sunday's. We came at 8 am and they weren't ready, not by a long shot. The chairs were still up and the cook barely made it inside. However, he was really nice and asked us to come in and wait a little bit. The food was fantastic but too heavy for 8 am. Make sure you come with an empty stomach and maybe not as early and you'll enjoy some great Cajun food via po'boys or waffles.
