With thick-cut, tallow-fried Belgian frites, the plate looks more potato than meat, but the 8-oz. sirloin is surprisingly hearty, and checks all the right shades of pink and brown. "When you can’t get a table at Rao’s, this just-as-tomato-red Belgian restaurant offers some consolation. From the folks behind the mousse bar Mojo, it’s a good East Harlem spot for some Trappist beers at the bar, or a glass of wine and some beef stew with thick-cut, tallow-fried frites. If you’re not really trying to eat at Rao’s but just want to go there for a drink, we’d suggest starting with dinner at d'Anvers. It’s downhill to Rao’s, but uphill if you do it the other way. "The folks behind mousse brand Mojo converted their dessert shop in East Harlem to a full Belgian restaurant, and it’s a great casual option for a giant bowl of moules or steak frites with tangy au poivre. There’s a bar where you can sit and ask the owners about the Trappist beers on offer, and a row of tables where friends catch up over beef stew and wine. All the red accents make it feel pretty cozy inside—make sure to check out the red light district-themed bathroom. "We reported on Cafe D’Anvers in February—a Belgian bistro in East Harlem with $37 steak frites and chicken vol au vent—but they haven’t been able to open fully because of gas-permit related issues. Finally, about 10 months later, they’re cleared for takeoff. The chef also owns the chocolate mousse shop called MOJO across the street, as well as Bar Goyana nearby.
