9 Excellent Salt Cod Dishes in NYC - Eater NY

"A bake is a round browned roll with a spongy texture used to make sandwiches, mainly for breakfast or as a snack. The filling is usually some kind of preserved fish, and saltfish — the Trinidadian term for salt cod — is one of the most popular. Sometimes the cod is mashed with boiled eggs. The sandwich makes a delightful way to enjoy the salt cod, especially if you put the Scotch bonnet hot sauce known as pepper on it, and a squirt of tamarind sauce, too." - Robert Sietsema

Google
I order doubles from here every so often and they never disappoint. All of the chutneys are so yummy and flavorful. I also love how spicy everything is. I recently tried the jerk chicken egg roll and it was delicious. I studied abroad in Trinidad when I was in college and I miss it all the time. It's nice to get a small taste here in Chicago!

After having many Trinidadian experiences, this Cafe was the worst. The curry was too salty, and the vegetable curry roti was just a bag of frozen vegetables. Don’t recommend, particularly if you’re Trini and know what good Trini food is.

Google
I ordered their chicken lunch special. The chicken was delicious and falling off the bone. The plantine was good. The rice was okay. I’d definitely try them again.

Authentic Taste of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹. Made fresh to order. Delicious curry taste. Boneless options. The curry chicken roti was tasty, fresh and smooth. The curry lamb roti was delicious.

I order via Grubhub. The food was fantastic! Takes like my grandmas roti. We had the curry shrimp and curry chicken roti. Soooo good!!!!!!

Google
The Callalo was very salty. The food was very underwhelming and they barely put any plantains as a side. I got curry goat bowl and there was a lot of bone. Definitely won’t be driving 45 min to the city for this stuff. I was happy to have childhood food again but was left disappointed. For what your paying they skimp you out a bit.

Google
Disappointing. As one of the limited options in Chicago for cuisine from Trinidad, I was expecting much more. What I got tasted like microwave frozen dinner. There is nothing I could really recommend.

Google
I used to absolutely love Trinidadadian Food. When Cafe Trinidad was open, I was a regular - NO MORE!!! The food we ordered from this location didn't have the subtle blending of spices I love. Each dish relied solely on peppers - heat - no other flavor. I was so disappointed! This location is a kitchen for multiple restaurants so there is a very impersonal, almost a "you're bothering me by being here" atmosphere.

Yelp
I don't even know where to start, other than I knew I wanted Caribbean food catered for lunch at work. I got in touch with Darryl after inquiring online about ordering and he was so helpful and easy to work with. It was a little late but totally worth the wait. We had the jerk chicken, goat curry, chicken curry, macaroni pie, rice and beans, plantains, roti, and curried vegetables. The flavors were so good along with the sauces. We all dug in as we were so hungry that I forgot to take pictures. Everyone in the office loved it as I saw so many people going for additional helpings and we still had leftovers that we planned on having the next day. It must have looked so good that someone actually stole our trays of leftovers in the fridge when we went in the next day. Unbelievable that people will just take food if there isn't a sign on it! I will definitely be ordering from here again.

Yelp
First of all I think we overwhelmed them a little bit, ( we did place an order with plenty of time as recommended)! Curry chicken was excellent , we ordered 4 platters. Goat curry was excellent, we ordered 2 platters. Curry shrimp was not as good and was quite bland! Dahlpuri (0rdered 12 skins ) and were very good. The platters also came with a small piece of dahlpuri in each platter and got very soggy from the curry and was a little disappointing. As I said I think we threw a little too much at them. Next time a smaller order is in order. Ps it is a ghost kitchen ( 1 st time for me) a little like an Amazon locker pick up area and works well once you realise the system. Ie log in when arrive with phone / tablets on the wall.

Yelp
Cafe Trinidad used to have a brick and mortar restaurant on the south side of Chicago. It now has and ordering service in River North. The photo provided is of the chicken curry roti (sorry, not pretty, I had already started eating ) was just as I had remembered. It was flavorful and the pepper sauce was tangy, spicy deliciousness as well. I would highly recommend trying them for amazing Trinidadian food favorites.

Yelp
OMG ,I would have taken picture of my food if I would have known this place didn't have reviews. They used to have a restaurant near Wintrust arena and now they have one of those kitchens....ghost kitchens I think. But the food here NEVER misses. These are the ONLY non African Americans that I will trust to make my Mac and cheese m the macaroni pie stated very much like southern black-a roni and cheese , pretty close to how Auntie Jean nem do! The first time I ate here ,I got doubles , macaroni pie and rice and peas and salad. The salad was spicy and I was mad because who makes spicy salad, but I forgave them because I didn't want to eat a damn salad anyway. I already told y'all about the macaroni pie-Bussin! The doubles were soooo good, sometimes I'm vegan , and I was like "this is a good addition to my vegan food roster. The rice and peas were good and everything was SO AFFORDABLE so I was able to try many things. NOW Let me tell you what knocked me out ....I mean put my ass down for a nap after I ate it ....it was this Amazing catfish sandwich called catfish and ...damn I forgot the name but it was a version...oh I remember catfish and bake which was a version of shark and bake which they have but I was to scary to try shark, but I will next time because this was amazing. Ooooh that catfish was seasoned DOWN and they have this bread and this garlic cilantro sauce ,cucumbers , pineapple, onion, lettuce, tomato, tamarind sauce on the side and you can pile your condiments on. ....and that was top 4 best sandwiches I ever ate... I can still taste it! Then I didnt have too much room for this thing called buss up shut ...which is roti that's torn up...busted up basically and I ate it with callaloo which is like a spinach and they prepared it with okra ..and my God...my brother HATES okra and he had no idea it was in there and loved it. It ....dang it was good!...if I can come back I'll show a pic of my leftovers ,lol but that might not help the business cuz it looks ran through real bad. But trust me ...this food was ALL good....except the salad ...unless you like spicy salad...then you might like that too!

Yelp
I ordered some doubles and plantain. Simple food, but so so good: soft flatbread, some savory channa, delicious chutneys. I am excited to try more: their roti, the fry bake, other Caribbean delights.

Yelp
I'm legit sad. The shark and bake is different, the palourie didn't come with tamarind sauce. Even the bussup texture changed. Who are y'all catering to!? What is with this weird side salad nonsense with pineapple for the shark and bake!? I'm a bajan from east Flatbush Brooklyn and I've been recommending y'all for a while when the food was right. I don't know what the aunties changed but this ain't it. No thank you.

Yelp
Incredible, absolutely incredible food! My partner wanted to do a surprise dinner and ordered for me. We got chicken curry rotis, doubles, a potato hand pie, rice & beans and plantains. It's rare when a restaurant does everything right but cafe Trinidad does. Can't wait till our next order out night to try more. They just shot to the top of favorite night in restaurants.

Yelp
It's hard to find West Indian food but this place makes delicious food!! Reasonably priced and located close to downtown.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my Roti. I also had some doubles which tasted excellent. This was definitely a reminder of growing up in the Caribbean with all the healthy foods. I would recommend this restaurant based on my experience.
