The Best Nachos In London

"Attention to detail isn’t something you can usually say about a pile of nachos. But Caldera, a Mexican-inspired spot in Hackney, gets it. They’ve got well-salted tortilla chips, guacamole with the right chunk-to-smooth ratio, and an abundance of green toppings. You’ve got sliced rounds of spring onion, large jalapeños, and coriander—plus charred, roasted salsa which makes this feel like a balanced meal rather than a cheesy, carby mess. If we had to choose one bowl of nachos to eat forever, we’re happy for it to be these. " - sinead cranna

Caldera Review - Hackney - London - The Infatuation

"Caldera is a Mexican-inspired spot in Hackney that we could definitely nap in. It draws you in for “just a few to pick at” totopos with well-seasoned guacamole, but keeps you ordering with corn kernels with chipotle aioli, and before you know it you’re wrist deep in a bowl of nachos. And these are really good nachos. Well-salted tortilla chips, fresh guacamole with the right chunk-to-smooth ratio, and an abundance of green toppings like spring onion, large jalapeños, and coriander. This is just a really pleasant spot in which to lounge, nestled between rows of empty chipotle pepper cans and propped up on calavera-print cushions. Then you can weigh up your post-nachos options—namely, crispy pork belly tacos and sea bass ceviche. " - Sinéad Cranna

Amazing food and experience!! The quality was high standards and the food came out really fast. Tacos, margaritas, quesadillas and the lamb was outstanding. Our service from Francesca was outstanding, really polite and anything we need happy to help with a smile. Thanks again for the experience.

DO NOT ORDER FOR DELIVERY. I ordered once and the food was okay, however, after ordering a second time I will not order again. Shocking quality and value for money. They delivered a plain cheese quesadilla instead of chicken, with a price difference of £5.50. The cheese was barely melted and cold. Nachos were delivered in a soggy box which was falling apart. The nachos themselves were flavourless. A plain cheese quesadilla and terrible quality nachos for over £19 (would have been £7 more without Deliveroo discount code). See photos for reference...

Great Mexican joint right next to the best building in London. I’m not a Mexican food expert but I rate this place! Fish taco - 8.5/10 Fish cooked well, moist and flakey, batter was crispy which contrasted well. Condiments and dressing paired superb. Fish could do with some more seasoning. Best dish, had to order two portions. Padron taco - 7/10 Deep fried and battered pepper, great flavour and texture. Batter separated from pepper when taking bite not sure if I need better teeth?? Steak taco - 7/10 Meaty and beefy flavour although slightly chewy. The sauce was really good though. Pork taco - 6/10 Pulled pork looked a bit dry and was a bit dry (no photo sorry). I think would be better with the steak taco sauce (hint hint). Prawn taco - 6/10 Prawn was marinaded nicely and juicy. Red sauce was a bit overpowering, took too much away from the base flavours. Pumpkin taco - 8/10 If I were vegetarian or vegan I’d say this was the best dish. Very complex flavours, sweet, savoury, spicy. Texture maybe leaned more on the mushy side? Overall - 8/10 I’ve been here a few times and I think it will become regular place for me, esp on taco Tuesdays. I would recommend the tacos for sure, the quesadillas aren’t bad either, nachos are fine. Service and vibe are good too.

It’s pretty hard to find good Mexican food in London. This place is crazy good. The short ribs were supposed to be for two but it turned into a dinner for myself. Really really great. Also, service from Francesca was great. Will definitely be back for taco Tuesday

Beautiful Mexican-inspired dishes in a beautiful space. The food is definitely fusion rather than authentic Mexican, but beautifully presented. The aubergine was the standout for us, but it we were less impressed with the shrimp tacos and ceviche. Overall though, a nice place for a weekend lunch - perfect ambience and music!

We ordered the fish tacos, short rib, and churros. Overall, the service was great, and the vibe was nice. However, we just found the food not up to standard. The short rib lacking flavour and juiciness. The churros were extremely dry and hard, with no fluffiness whatsoever and was only saved by the caramel sauce. The fish in the taco was very tasty, but we felt the rest of the elements didn't pair well.

Yelp
I loved my grilled prawn tacos (spicy!) and ceviche but my husband said his steak tacos were bland, despite the neat padron peppers a top. The price is decent for three tacos. He loved his chicken tinga burrito tho: said it was full of flavour. The margaritas are fantastic: potent and yet subtle. The waiter was fairly attentive. I Table water provided in old tequila bottles. I would definitely return.
