22 Grocery Stores To Check Out When You’re Sick Of Ralphs - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"California Market in Koreatown is the kind of grocery store you walk into with only a few things on your list, then end up spending two hours inside just exploring. Aside from excellent produce and an extensive seafood counter, there’s also a banchan bar, a Korean fried chicken vendor, and a Tous Les Jours bakery inside. Oh, and an entire food court on the roof, too. Parking can be downright hellacious in this part of town, but luckily, California Market also has a five-story parking structure attached, with ample spots available." - Brant Cox, Sylvio Martins, Kat Hong

@goop

"What was formerly called Gaju Marketplace has recently been remodeled into an incredibly vast food court and grocery store that’s a staple for the goop staffers who live in Koreatown. The banchan (small prepared sides like bean sprouts with sesame oil) are convenient to pick up for a light solo meal or for an impromptu dinner party. And because of the big Latino community that also lives within K-town, you’ll find the freshest avocados and papayas alongside daikon and jars of kimchi. The best part: the free, on-site, five-floor parking structure with panoramic views stretching from DTLA to Culver City."

Where to Get the Best Korean Noodles in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Korean banquet noodles, or janchi guksu, are proof that Korean flavors aren’t necessarily a dialed-up, in-your-face affair. The noodle and gimbap stand at California Market might adorn their janchi guksu with a generous helping of scallion, but the dish is still a refreshing exercise in finesse — the clean anchovy based broth closely resembles a Japanese dashi broth without the smokiness afforded by bonito. With a helping hand from zucchini, puffy morsels of fried bean curd and zucchini for texture, it’s a slightly unorthodox but delicious rendition of the Korean wedding favorite." - Euno Lee

Google
California Market is one of my favorite places to shop! The store is always clean, well-organized, and stocked with a great variety of fresh produce, meats, and specialty Asian ingredients that can be hard to find elsewhere. The quality of their fruits and vegetables is consistently excellent, and I really appreciate how neatly everything is displayed. The staff is friendly, efficient, and helpful whenever I have questions. I also love that they carry both everyday staples and unique seasonal items — it makes grocery shopping enjoyable and fun. Whether you're picking up a few essentials or planning a full Korean meal, this market has everything you need. Highly recommend!

Google
California Market is a great spot for grocery shopping. It offers convenient parking, a wide selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood, and even has cafes inside for a quick bite. The prices are great, with everyday sales, and the friendly staff make the experience even better. Highly recommended!

Google
If you're Korean or like Korean food you'll love this place. Very wide selection of everything from noodles, fish, squid, etc. Easy to spend up to an hour in there. Small bakery & Cafe inside, too.

Google
My favorite little gem for smaller batch grocery shopping. They offer organic and non-organic produce that is fresh and so affordable, beating out Whole Foods in quality and price many times. I love getting my kale bunches here for 99 cents each; you can't beat that! I also enjoy trying new snacks like hundreds of different instant noodle packet flavors and prepared Korean dishes. A true gem with a free parking garage, elevators, and stairs for access. Must go!

Marco Baciarelli

Google
Beat place that I know of for low price veggies meats are high quality but price wise comes to be expected with the quality. Overall amazing store for the food and day to day products. I visit on a daily basis! Noodle selection is amazing!!!

What the fish sushi Since 2014

Google
Open till midnight which is really convenient for late sleepers. There are two entrance and two exits. There are a couples restaurant inside the market I.e.Korean foods , fried chicken , Bakery and coffee shop . Also , we can buy make up stores on the second floor as well. Really big parking at least 2-3 floors .

Douglas “Doug” Barton

Google
Truly amazing selection of all Asian foods. Beautiful and extensive produce department, ultra fresh and great prices. Phenomenal selection of fresh fish and seafood as well as fresh meats with a great butcher there to help. It's goes without saying that their sushi is ultrafresh with a beautiful selection. After shopping here I have all but given up on Ralph's, Pavilions and Gelson's. Open until midnight!

Yesterday, December 14, 2024, I bought quail eggs at California Market, they spent the night in the refrigerator, today I found mold on them. I have a receipt and bank transactions as proof. You should be more concerned about the freshness of the products in your store.
google avatar

Sue C.

Yelp
Best fresh kimchi ever! I will drive far distances to buy their kimchi. They have a vast assortment of different kinds of kimchi, too.
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
Love this market, particularly because they have great kimbap in the corner of the market as well as some fast food place and bakery and Coffee Bean around one side of the market. You can pick up all your kbbq ingredients and things to make hoedeopbap. There's some warmer ready made food near the back corner where kimbap is. They also have some BCD soondubu kits, Ellenos yogurt, some probiotic drinks... just a multitude of things you can find.
google avatar

Chris Y.

Yelp
I used to like coming here before, but lately have noticed that a lot of foods in the vegetables section have mold. Several times I bought berries and there was mold.. Also, how eggs can be $13? I haven't seen these prices even at Whole Foods, and they are not even organic or Pasture-raised.
google avatar

Junghwan P.

Yelp
I Just purchase korean seoul soon Dae (korean pork sausage). I came home and opened it it was all molded. I live in temecula which is 2hr away from market. So I called them to refund my purchase and tell them I can send picture. But they refused to refund my credit card payment and ask me to comeback. Are u fucking serious?... This place make things worst for small problem. I will contact la county health department and make sure they do not sell such a rotten stuff. I already told them I will put it on yelp and health department and seems like they don't really care.

Yelp
VERY VERY cute and underrated supermarket in Koreatown. Why? Because free parking!! I came with friends to explore the supermarket, try the kimbap, and hangout at the courtyard upstairs and it was a very fun experience. We got the beef kimbap which I thought was not bad, but not amazing. It was a little dry, but tasty nonetheless. The supermarket has your run of the mill items - and there's some restaurants inside as well! Upstairs, there's more shops, food court, and an outdoor area to eat and chill with your friends. Highly recommend that you check this place out!

Yelp
The place has undergone a lot of changes since I first visited back in late 90s. Entrance to the store is bit weird, but they got all your needs. There's a small food court in the back corner of the building, as well as other snack and tea shops at the 3rd floor as well.
google avatar

Doreen M.

Yelp
A good Korean grocery store - big, a lot of variety, great prices, friendly staff, and a great deli/prepared foods section. Parking is a bit cramped and SUPER busy, but there is a food court on the top floor which is why I was here. Got some groceries on the way out. Would come again if in the area.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This is my favorite Korean market to go to mostly out of habit but there is so much that I enjoy getting here. It's also very clean and has good American options when you need them (it's annoying to have to go to multiple supermarkets in a day sometimes). The prices aren't bad and there is basically everything that I need. I also love the fact that the parking situation is easy to navigate as it does not require a ticket to get in and out.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
The thing that distinguishes California Market from the rest of the many, many other Korean markets in the area or any markets in general, is that it's open until MIDNIGHT!! Other than that, it's your typical Korean market, and you can find most items you would expect to find at a Korean market.
google avatar

Maruko X.

Yelp
The California market grocery place is located at a shopping center with its own parking structure. It has spacious outdoor seating area and indoor food court on the top level, and standard grocery stuff on the ground level.

Jung O.

Yelp
Today, I bought grilled mackerel and mixed grain rice at Gaju Market and had lunch. I would like to share it because it is good value and delicious.
google avatar

Audrey C.

Yelp
My personal opinion; their varieties of homemade kimchi taste the best. Also the marinated Galbi (Korean short ribs) are the best quality in k-town and is perfect seasoning to my taste. Not a fan of their fruits and vegetable section in terms of freshness and the display is so messy. Not much organic options either. I go to a different market to purchase them.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Negative stars for the security guard. My friend and I came here to get some groceries and decided to walk across the street to get a bite of Korean food at Haneum before coming back to the Ye tea place on the second floor. The security guard started following us and yelling at us, calling us a liar and kept pointing his finger at us. This is HARASSMENT. This is the second time this has happened while shopping here. I showed him my receipt and he shrugged off angrily. This is unacceptable. The last time I came here for Ye Tea (second floor) the security guard followed me upstairs yelling at me where I was going. Management needs to do something about this old cranky security guard who is ruining their customer's shopping experience. Next time I will record the interaction on my phone.

Yelp
California Market is one of many Korean supermarkets in Koreatown. I initially had a hard time locating the escalator because the entrance was tucked within the shops. I recommend using elevators if you can't find the escalator and the market is located on the underground floor. Parking within the parking structure is free, but parking spots are pretty tight. While many of grocery items were priced reasonably, food vendor options weren't all that exciting with one selling Kimbap (Korean Sushi Roll) / bibimbap, one selling KFC (Korean fried chicken), and one Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Mediocre Korean supermarket and the only interesting & appealing part about this plaza is the food selection on the top level. P.S. - On the top level of this plaza there are few dining options such as Thanks Pizza, Seoul Pho, Ye Stage & Tea, Sinjeon, and Two Hands Hotdog with open-air public outdoor dining table.

Vicenzo B.

Yelp
I paid $7 for BROKEN fucking noodles. There was no way of knowing until the package was opened. I am furious because they were on sale for $4.99 up until the day i actually bought them and I figured, "whatever, it's just a few extra dollars" but tell me WHY not a SINGLE noodle was intact. It's like the person stocking the shelves decided to use the package of noodles as a punching bag before putting them on the shelf. I'm so pissed off. If they are going to make a four pack of noodles SEVEN dollars, the LEAST they can do is make sure the noodles are still noodles.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
Clean, open, organized layout with helpful staff. They have parking. I can't get over how this place has changed for the better. I remember the old market before it was renovated.
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Love this gem of an Asian grocery store! So grateful it's in my neighborhood! Fresh produce amazing banchan and marinated meats.
google avatar

Yelp
Like most Koreatown malls, this one is anchored by a supermarket -- the mighty Caju (California) Market. Though the "mall" above is largely a flop, the market is a hit! First, say your prayers and navigate the (free) parking structure behind the market. Crazy drivers abound. The "EV charging stations" are there, but they forgot to install the EV chargers. Park anywhere and run for the doors! Truly a "super" market with the usual great prices on fruits, vegetables fish and meat; they beat rival H Mart prices on most things I buy. There's a snack section in the front with all the Lotte snacks and crackers on sale. Load up! Though Greta Thunberg might not approve, Korean snacks are largely individually wrapped -- perfect for lunchbag, pocket or purse -- with built-in portion control and no waste. Also a generous section of kitchen stuff, paper goods and face products. The Aloe-scented tissues from Korea are worth every dime. An entire aisle for snack products! Pepero Day is almost here. Most Korean supermarkets lease space to a bakery, and you'll find the unpronounceable Tous les Jours inside for fresh cakes and coffee. Udon on your mind? Head to the very back of the store for a tiny restaurant serving fresh gimbap and more. [Better: head upstairs to the third floor for Thanks Pizza]. Thanks Caju!

Yelp
3.7 stars A very convenient market in Ktown with all kinds of goodies in it. Major bonus are all the built-in little eateries that sell noodles and gimbap, fried chicken, and a bakery. Definitely one of my favorite markets to go to when I want to do a bit of light shopping or lunch/dinner afterwards since it's located in a 3-story plaza. Major bonus: free parking

Kassan H.

Yelp
Says you can return items within a certain time if unopened they you go return them and try to get a refund and they flat out refuse. So sad I was a regular here but not anymore. It's so simple to not be an idiot and resolve customer issues that are easy fixes.
google avatar

Anny O.

Yelp
I love this market! They have a wide variety of all the instant ramens. Produce is very fresh and they have a lot of snacks too. They also have a lot of options for the all ready made korean side dishes. I recommend trying the kimbap inside the market located at the back of the store. It's really good and fair price. Parking is free here and I usually don't have trouble finding parking.
google avatar

Chloe K.

Yelp
great place for free parking! i like the food options and they also have a tous les jours! p small but still a good place for bread, i got the melona cream bread and some groceries as well.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best Asian food markets in the area The prices are always great. They have hands down the cheapest korean bbq meats and kimchi in all of koreatown. Their meat is always fresh, and they have a huge produce section. They have a good selection of fish, but the workers are not the best at cleaning. Even if you ask for it to be cut unto filets, expect a few bones. The sides and hot food are definitely expensive but they do have a huge selection. The kimbap place in the corner is always good and they have kimbab and fried tofu combos for just $7 It is a clean store but make sure you are ready to wait because the checkout line is always insane

John M.

Yelp
This is my second time at this market, first time I bought chicken and pork and this time sliced ribeye. Within an hour of cooking and consuming each of these products I've have been glued to the toilet. Not sure what's up with this place but DO NOT buy any meat.

Kelly W.

Yelp
My go to Asian market after moving from Rowland to LA! There's so much to choose from. Their frozen section is massive. They even have vegan rice balls and dumplings, huge plus. Their kimbap stall in the back is good, too! All of their hot foods hit the spot when I'm craving Korean food but don't feel like going to a restaurant. I think they're still building their upstairs area because it was blocked off when I went but it looks like a really nice place to eat the foods and snacks you buy from the market
google avatar

Claire K.

Yelp
When someone asks me to go to a Korean market in K-town, I automatically think of and suggest California Market. Back when I used to live in Ktown as a child (and before their big renovation and when it only used to be 1 floor), my family used to come here all the time! Love the kimbap shop inside the market (located in the furthest back right corner). The third floor is a beautiful rooftop with a bunch of Korean stores and a food court. Perfect place to grab a light lunch or snack and just hang out! Parking is free, although it's kind of tight. Make sure to watch the turns!
google avatar

Charlene N.

Yelp
Very fresh produce with a lot of variety. Also great food stands within the market! The crab kimbap is our favorite.
google avatar

Ann Y.

Yelp
BEST KOREAN MARKET IN KTOWN After going to Hmart and Zion I feel this market has the best side dishes, meat selection and fresh clean produce. I also love the kimbap place located inside the back corner. Ample parking. I love the open seating and chill area at the 3rd floor patio too.
google avatar

Scarlett H.

Yelp
Not as well known as leading Korean markets such as H Mart or Galleria but this one in my opinion is a great value for the money. Like most others, the produce and meat sections have very good varieties. But our family likes their cooked food offerings the best. The Bossam packages (sliced port with cabbage and kimchi) are great choice for a ready to eat Korean feast at home. The Kimbap (Korean style sushi rolls) is good too - our favorite is the beef Kimbap with lots of fillings inside and just a thin layer of rice around. Parking is free and easy - enter from the 5th street for easy access to the market entrance. Lastly, they are part of an outdoor / open air mall where you can find coffee shops, casual eateries and a children's play ground in the same complex. A great place for families to get some munchies, some play and some grocery shopping done all in one spot.
google avatar

Darylynn D.

Yelp
There's a free parking here!! That is a big plus in Koreatown. I love the fresh produce and fresh vegetables here. Some are reasonably priced and the quality is there. There's also a bunch fresh fish as well. If you're looking for seafood or fresh meat it's ideal to come here. Again, it's reasonably priced. Prior to Covid there would be samples of some of the foods, but not anymore. Bummer.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
I came here today during COVID. I still love this place because they have such great foods that you just cant get from a regular market and I enjoy the place and all it has to offer. Though, please be safe here...it seems like no one adheres to social distancing here at all. They must think that wearing a mask and gloves is enough and safe. A lot of the customers didn't respect personal space, sadly. Next time I think I will say something. Despite that little annoying thing today, which I knew was going to be a risk that I take upon myself and was willing to...I did get some yummy stuff. Their meats section is great, so is their fruits section, so is their Asian snacks...HECK its all good here!
google avatar

Tiona ..

Yelp
Parking! In my top rotation of grocery stores in LA : ) This store has sooo much and everything is easy to find. Not to mention, the restaurant and food shops inside are incredible!

Jesus G.

Yelp
One of my favorite Korean supermarkets they have so many things and prices aren't bad at all. I had their tuna kimbap from their food stand towards the back and it's really good value, it was a lot for only $8!
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
WTH how is this place rated 3.5 stars and freaking Galleria market is 4 stars? This place is waaaay bigger, cleaner, and has definitely more fresh produce with more selections. Don't even get me started with the meat section either. This place has muuuuch better meat quality and more variety of cuts than Galleria. I would not even hesitate about choosing this place over other Korean markets including the likes of H mart in LA. Parking is annoying but not too bad as it has its own parking structure.
google avatar

Yiu Wah L.

Yelp
prices have gone up considerably but still good sushi located within the market. must pay separately from the main market.
google avatar

Richard O.

Yelp
I'm upgrading my review, because I just discovered market brand Bibim Naeng Myun. Throughout the pandemic, I have been eating at home alot, but never bothered to try market brand Bibim Naeng Myun, until yesterday. Bibim Naeng Myun is typically $14.99 at restaurants, but the market brand Bibim Naeng Myun is $6.99, and tastes exactly like the restaurant's version. All you have to do is boil the noodles for 5 minutes, put it under a cold running faucet add ice then the noodles are chilled. Finally, add the spicy sauce in the packet, and voila you're done. The market brand Bibim Naeng Myun is so good, I won't be buying it from restaurants any more. California Market also has great marinaded meats, so when it comes to Korean Groceries, this place has it all.
google avatar

Bakari M.

Yelp
Wish I would've known about the California Market earlier. I usually head to H Mart when grabbing Korean food, but this market is packed with so many grocery options and delicious restaurants. I ordered gimbap from a stand downstairs. The beef version was filled with tons of food and the shop gave me a ton of pieces. So delicious and I was completely full by the end of it. The best part is that they have an outside roof deck where you can sit down and relax while you eat. Overall, I loved the set up here.
google avatar

Sang-a Y.

Yelp
My go to place to get my Korean groceries. I've also gone to H Mart, and I like California Market better. I feel like California Market has the best deal on green onions. In addition, I really like their gimbap! I usually get the tuna gimbap as I feel like that's the best one.
google avatar

Ruby M.

Yelp
I always come to this market, been coming here for years & never experienced such discriminating employees. A lady pushed me while restocking kimchi and yanked the one I was looking at and placed it back. They all look at you like if you're going to steal something. I told her to say excuse me next time. Cashiers always rude. So disappointing.
google avatar

Justin T.

Yelp
My go to market for Korean groceries! It's located in a large plaza woth other clothing and food stores on the upper levels. It has an attached parking garage which can get quite hectic especially on weekends but otherwise I have always found parking after some patience. They really have a good selection of fresh produce and everything you need when it comes to making galbi jjim or having hot pot. The frozen meats are all really good quality and I love the variety of Korean snacks they have here as well. There is also a coffee shop, tour le jour bakery, fried chicken place and a really bomb gimbap place that I always go too. I even come here to just get the chamchi (tuna) Kimbap. They do charge for bags so don't forget to bring your own. And they do some service for you as well if you spend over a certain amount you get free hand sanitizer, masks or wipes. You can grab food upstairs and then walk around the grocery store after to get your groceries! I am a regular here!!
google avatar

ON H.

Yelp
The market is nice , but the security guard in the parking lot is very agressive and rude . Told me I couldn't park in the 15 min space as well as harassed me and asked me what store I was going too . I complained to California market and the manager said that because I was not Korean I didn't matter. Now this was completely shocking being that I shop here 2-3 times a week for lunch and groceries . I will never give these people my money or energy again. This hurt especially being first generation Japanese . So sad to see this type of racism in 2022. Please do not support this business .
google avatar

Fran P.

Yelp
They sell rotten an very poor quality grocery Don't buy radish and fancy packages pomelo from this store. It looked ok outside but rotten inside when cut. Fancy package pomelo sold for $4.99 each was so dry and inedible.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Variety of seafood. Typical Asian market vibe. Came here for some sashimi seafood. They have a large variety of seafoods, including a tank of live abalone, which I have never seen in a market before. That is cool. The sashimi seafood is okay. Tastes as you expect it from a grocery market. Not off-the-fish fresh but it is good enough. Tip: check the dates and you get what you paid for, especially for sashimi. This is a typical Asian grocery market, so comparatively, this market is average. Nothing special except for the seafood selection and live abalone. Lacks organic options for other foods, which is typical of Asian markets. I would come back for seafood though.
google avatar

Patty G.

Yelp
I loveddddd this market. They had all the good stuff. Yummy snacks and fun drinks they literally had everything Asian and yummy you could imagine one of my favorite markets in ktown Forsure
google avatar

Keesha F.

Yelp
Clean, fresh, and reasonably priced food! Produce is very good! Got that pink pineapple for $20 and cheapest I've seen it was $50. I'm excited! They also have nice eateries on the top floor!
google avatar

Albert D.

Yelp
We tried to reuse an empty box in this markets that we get from their crew member after they refill their stocks, apparently front cashier have no appreciation. It is their job to pack my groceries after I paid, but they obviously left us packed our own groceries because we reuse the empty box and cashier didn't even say "thank you" for the business we gave, instead rudely just pass the receipt. It's only $0.10 per bag, and reuse empty box should get appreciation not a bad service. Shouldn't be too cocky just because you are one of the busiest market in the area. Stop being a damn j3rk!
google avatar

Gohar K.

Yelp
Great place to shop for Asian imports. This Korean market is full of imported frozen foods, snacks, fresh fish, drinks and fresh produce. I love getting sauces, noodles and specialty food items to create/cook dishes at home. There are few eateries inside the market serving noodles, bbq and more. Also a Coffee Bean right up front. The store is somewhat clean and organized. Also lots of sample to try while shopping. The kimchi section here was the biggest I have seen. So many different ones to chose from. So if you love kimchi you gotta stop by. Overall a great experience every time I stop by to try new items and flavors. The only thing that's not so great is the customer service. Rude ... I will be back next time I'm in town to stock up on saki and food.
google avatar

Connie S.

Yelp
This market went a complete transformation a few years ago and now has shopping and a food court above. As for the grocery itself, it has what you would expect from a Korean market. There is a kimbap place in the back and a udon place and also a bakery. On my last visit, I did see something that I've never seen anywhere else. It was called Korean honey strawberries. They were 6 bucks for probably 8 small strawberries. I was intrigued but I couldn't justify the price. Free parking in lot
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
Possibly the largest most varied Asian supermarket in the area. Although not the cheapest, that likely goes to Hanam Supermarket. The produce here seems much better than the other Asian supermarkets. A huge plus is free parking and a wonderful roof top food court
