Best Restaurants for Korean Food and Barbecue in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This unassuming restaurant is popular with students due to its proximity to the University of California San Diego campus. The hot chicken tender box includes two tenders, vinegar slaw, waffle fries, and furikake rice. Calvin’s also serves Korean fried chicken wings and tteokbokki. Don’t skip the Umami Sando, which packs tenders with vinegar slaw, pickles, and a secret sauce between brioche buns. A separate fryer is set aside for gluten-free guests; many of the house-made sauces are also gluten-free." - Helen I. Hwang

Where to Eat Near UC San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Calvin’s doesn’t skimp on heat, with wings and tenders able to be ordered at seven different spice levels and flavors ranging from a dusting of furikake or a garlic-soy sauce to a bright red “devil garlic” and the fiery “Satan’s kiss”. A boon for diners is the crispy batter used for wings and tenders is gluten-free (items containing gluten are listed on the menu). Sides and other dishes include slaw, Cajun waffle fries, corn and edamame, kimchi, and tteokbokki. The restaurant is mainly set up for to-go orders, but there is some seating inside and a few outdoor tables."

Google
Diamond in the rough An absolute, dialed in celiac safe experience. The chicken is gluten free and provides a superior crunch to its counterpart. Sauce spice levels are very tame , you can handle Satan's kiss just fine as a nice medium heat. All flavors are sweet and savory with a slight acidic tang, the profiles are a solid catch all experience. I hope those who visit also enjoy, and leave an honest review.

Literally a hole is the wall. The chicken spot is a hidden gem in La Jolla. Tucked away in a strip mall is come of the juiciest and crunchiest fried chicken I have had. The staff were super helpful and quick with the food. The food was delicious, with very reasonable pricing. A must try if you are in the area!

Google
I've been looking for a Korean chicken place like this for ages. Wings are perfect, sauce is fantastic. I would go all wings vs. tenders but that's my preference. Person who I ordered from advised against the "pure evil" sauce and I would agree with her unless you really really love heat. Most people who don't eat spice competitively should not order a full order but if you want something truly challenging, lip swelling pain, this is for you. Very very spicy and I love it. Borderline torture. Wouldn't change a thing. Really great, new favorite Korean chicken joint.

Google
This place did not disappoint. I would include a picture but the smell was so good I didn’t have time before I started eating. We are here from Texas and are so happy to have found this spot. Nothing else has compared to the quality and craft put into this chicken. It is dangerous how close this is to the hotel. We will definitely be back!! And we loved the decor.

When I come to California, I cannot miss getting Korean fried chicken at least once. Usually the chicken will be gluten-free, but the sauces are loaded with soy sauce and so I can’t have anything but plain. Here, all of their sauces are gluten-free. The first time at a restaurant I like to order a little bit of everything to see what I would like the most. I like the wings here more for some reason but they’re all good. Same with the fries. I would say, unless you’re gonna finish it all in one sitting, order the sauce on the side. There was definitely a lot of sauce and I can’t see it remaining crunchy after you heat it up again. I also would order like a little bit lighter sauce because these were covered. Don’t forget to ask for dipping sauce if you want that. Overall, definitely the best Korean fried chicken I’ve had thus far and really appreciate that their sauce are gluten-free too. Seems like a place where you do takeout but you can eat inside.

Google
.The place is a small mom and pop looking restaurant but the food was surprisingly good. Served hot and fast I felt like I made a good choice.only thing that could be improved would be the decor of the interior.

I ordered from here on seamless and paid about $60 (including fees and driver tip). I got: Onion rings $9 Sweet potato fries $9 Mix chicken $32 (2 flavors, 2 tenders and 4 wings each flavor) furikake - seaweed and sesame seed, red - medium heat. This chicken was so damn good! The chicken was cooked to perfection and breaded well. After reheating the chicken the next day, the breading did start to fall off but the flavor of the meat was great. The portion for the sweet potato fries was small and I don’t recommend ordering it. But there was an adequate amount of onion rings for the portion size. I’ll be heading to the restaurant next time for my next order!

Google
The wings were crispy. The tenders were more soft with less crisp factor. Waffle fries were crispy outside and soft inside. We got savory red, garlicky soy, and devil garlic. Savory red was supposed to be mild heat but I really couldn’t taste any spice. The devil garlic is supposed to be medium heat but was more mild. Of note, they mentioned they don’t have the furikake flavor anymore. Slaw was pretty good.

Yelp
Ever since I found this place, and whenever I'm in the area - I always try to stop by and get some gluten free fried chicken to go. It's so crunchy and flavorful. The plain/original one is flavorful - not like some other gluten free fried chicken places who offer gf but not with other sauces but meanwhile their original gf chicken does not have flavor. But it's not the case with Calvin's... Their OG is divine... I usually get the plain and garlicky soy flavor. The garlicky soy is not overly sweet and still crunchy and not spicy at all. You can heat it up in toaster oven or air fryer. The crunch will still be there. I recently tried their gluten free Tteokbokki. Oh wow...it just tastes like the regular one. It has some crispiness on the outside of the rice cake combined with the perfect softness. I tried it with medium spiciness level and wow I do eat spicy but I will order it milder level next time. But it's so good and spicy. It has some sliced cabbage mixed with the sauce on top of the rice cake. They have parking in the lot where they're located. There are tables outside and inside.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered the 10 piece wings (which comes with coleslaw) and a side order of onion rings. 2 sauce types: savory red and garlicky soy. We were surprised to find 1 extra wing per sauce (so 2), which was a nice little bonus. Pros: crunchy, fresh, delicious, fast, and both sauces were good. My favorite of the 2 would be the savory red. There wasn't a line when we went around 7pm, they do military discount, decent price: $26 (after discount). Cons: The cashier seemed like she had a panic attack when asked if they did military discount and her seeing my husband's veteran card because she said she'd never saw one like that, a little too casual for a business setting (as she was wearing slides and shorts), we weren't acknowledged until we were ready to order (the cashier was on her phone), it's a small place which is fine but tables were dirty; which was surprising because everyone was sitting around), and they weren't as friendly as I would expect. If you care only about the taste of the food this is a good place to go to, but if you want the full package (food, service, and ambience) then it may not be for you.

Yelp
Really really really great option for those have issues with gluten, but can't shake that craving for some good fried chicken. The original and the devil garlic are my favorites. I've only ordered takeout here so I can't comment on the dine in experience, but it's a little family owned hole in the wall spot that has dang good fried chicken! The only things that are a bit of a miss are the coleslaw and the rice. The slaw lacks flavor and the rice has always been on the dry side. The fried chicken is on point though and the service has always been quick!

Yelp
This place was amazing! We ordered some food for takeout including their chicken sandwich meal, the garlic soy wings, and the furikake wings. Everything tasted great however my favorite was the chicken sandwich with their fries! The bread was unique and deliciously buttery and the fries that they paired with it were perfect! They were fried to perfection on outside and fluffy on the inside for the most satisfying bite. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for an amazing takeout meal!!

Yelp
Ok uncle Calvin's chicken got it going on. A little shabby chicken shop run by a Korean family is exactly the place I expect to find amazing Korean chicken. We ordered the soy garlic chicken to go for a nice Torrey pines view and it was still bomb. Sweet and crunchy and addicting. My Korean family loved it. We will be back for more.

Yelp
location: same plaza as Pho La Jolla & Dominos parking: free!! main takeaway: solid place for korean fried chicken. their dining area is pretty small, but they have some tables inside and a few outside if you wanted to eat there! stendout: my favorite was the savory red; it's mildly spicy, and it compliments the crispy chicken
google avatar

Yelp
Really good Korean hot chicken! I've ordered on Uber eats twice and it travels really well. It's arrived crunchy and fresh both times. Devils Garlic: Nice subtle kick, great garlic slightly sweet flavor Satan's Kiss: I love spicy. This one had a nice heat level, definitely tolerable but also taste amazing. Pure Evil: Omg...this one was HOT. I ordered this one to call their bluff but they understood the assignment. The heat was there! Have a few heart burn pills nearby if you're feeling brave. Their amazing Ranch won't help. lol.

Yelp
It's a very tiny place. The fried chicken is fine. It comes with a vinegar coleslaw. I wish they had a more traditional Korean Fried Chicken side dish of pickled radish. They have a shared bathroom upstairs and you need to ask for a key. Service was kind of mid. The person taking the order wasn't friendly or rude - just meh.

Yelp
Service/Setting I came in on a slow weekend afternoon. The restaurant itself is small, probably better for takeout. The staff, however, was nice and served my food quickly. Had a good experience here. Food I ordered their wing box with a mild spice. The food is delicious. Great crunch to each price of chicken, even after being sauced and sitting for a little while. Everything in the box is really good, from the fries to the rice and the slaw. Overall Great spot for fried chicken and a nice addition to the La Jolla area!

Yelp
This place is so good! We ordered tenders for the Super Bowl this year for takeout. They must make everything fresh because it took awhile from when we ordered until when the order was ready. We got the medium and mild tenders. The medium tenders had a good kick! They tasted good half an hour later at home. And the leftovers heated up nicely the next day. The tenders are pretty big and filling. I was nervous that 2 tenders/person wouldn't be enough but it was plenty. I was so excited to try the fries because waffle is my favorite cut! They didn't travel as well for takeout so would be interested to try those again next time warmed up or dining in. An amazing bonus is their chicken is gluten free. My husband is gluten free, but I am not. And I thought the chicken tasted as good if not better than gluten filled options I've had. We served tenders to some guests and they couldn't tell it was gluten free either. Will definitely be going back to Calvin's!

Yelp
Honestly, picked this spot on a whim heading down to La Jolla to visit my cousin, he wanted pho and this was next door! The prices were reasonable and we didn't expect much. It was a cold and rainy day in San Diego so yes, everyone was getting pho! Needed the order on the fly, like less than 7 mins and they were super accommodating, when the lady asked what kind of spice, I let her decided and she went with the garlic soy! This place was soooo damn good! The combo was enough for my partner and I, the waffle fries were just like the chicken tenders, hot and crispy. The coleslaw was a bit sour which I liked. (oooh I should of checked if they had pickled daikon or kimmmchiiii) I would highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
I have to come back to update the review because I don't agree with my last one. I think I was just surprised to get such a sweet flavor when I got the savory red. But today I tried the Satan's Kiss (3 tenders) and I'm blown away. It tastes like the savory red, still sweet, but a touch more salty than sweet and obviously way spicier. It's so flavorful, juicy, saucy, perfect. I couldn't bear to leave my review at 4 stars lol. Amazing

Yelp
Really good gluten free fried chicken. Rare to find a gf fried chicken spot and this place got it down.

Yelp
The chicken wings were okay, crispy and tender. Somewhat spicy. Nothing to write a review about either way. But the service, that's another thing. After a siberian-cold welcome and ordering process, I eat my wings at a table, and brought it back to the main counter after finishing it. With nowhere obvious to leave it, I put the plate on a table closest to the counter and left the place thinking I did a good deed. To my surprise and to the others guests', the waitress ran after me in the parking lot shouting that I could have used the trash instead of leaving the plate like this. Wow. Why did I give a tip again??

Yelp
Omg where was this when I was at UCSD?? The chicken is BUSSIN and the service is quick and efficient. Bonus points for the cashier singing along to kpop LOL The soy garlic is delicious if you don't enjoy spice and if you do, Satan's kiss was also amazing. It's like a true medium spice (go lower if you get Mild). This is a takeout spot! Don't worry- the chicken will somehow still be crunchy after a 20 mins drive.

Yelp
What better way to meet your fried Korean chicken fix than here at Calvin's Korean Hot Chicken. They added some new dishes and bowls that you can order besides the chicken wings but I would still have to say the best thing you can do is try the flavors and the chicken. The devil's garlic, the soy, the regular is all good. I ordered a bunch to go and they were quick with service. This is a small spot found near UCSD and I would say it is worth a visit.

Yelp
My coworkers and I were craving some fried chicken, so we stopped by here on our lunch break and we were so glad we did. We were served quickly and with a smile. They don't have many seats inside, but there are a few tables outside that we sat at to eat. Their chicken is so crispy and tasty, and all at a very fair price. All of us really enjoyed it, and we look forward to returning. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of trying the spiciest sauce - the jump in spice level from Satan's kiss to pure evil is pretty big. Satan's kiss provides a good flavor and kick, whereas pure evil is exactly how it sounds. He warned me when I asked for pure evil, with a look of genuine concern for my well-being. I like to think I'm pretty good with spice so I told him I can handle it. Let me tell you, this one is no joke. You have been warned.

Yelp
Amazing spot for Korean fried chicken within walking distance of UCSD. The inside is small and unassuming, but the food here is surprisingly excellent. The menu walks you through ordering, with chicken combos at a reasonable price served with a veggie slaw, furikake rice, and cajun fries. I highly recommend trying Satan's Kiss if you can handle spice!

Yelp
ok, my friends had the chicken and thought it was decent. i had the katsu udon. and it was the costco instant udon. tasted like it and it even came in the same plastic bowl. the katsu was soggy and honestly tasted instant too. this was $16!!!! are you kidding???

Aileen K.

Yelp
Their Korean rice cakes tasted like vinegar. It was very strange. The frozen packaged bags from HMart taste way better than these. Their Cole slaw was just ok. The chicken strips were average.

Yelp
Calvin's is in the little strip mall directly behind Nordstrom Rack which sits in the La Jolla Village shops. They have tables outside and in, but the ambiance leaves little to be desired. My hubby and I really wanted to like this place. The person who greeted us was nice, made a few suggestions based on the flavors we were looking for. We decided to order a la carte and get two flavors of wings, an order of sweet potato fries and an order of onion rings. The tenders are HUGE, like human growth hormone huge which was a bonus. The fries were delicious, onion rings my favorite because of how crispy they were and the chicken was my least favorite. They were overly sauced and just swimming in it so they lost all signs of crispness by the time you wanted a second tender. If there is a next time, I'd get them plain with sauce on the side. The garlicky soy reminded me of Padadak and was overly sweet, whereas I liked the savory red. There was just too much of it.
google avatar

Holly C.

Yelp
Yummy waffle fries and chicken tenders. The medium hot sauce was delicious but not super spicy. They were willing to leave the Cajun seasoning off the waffle fries for my kid but the Cajun seasoning was pretty mild so I think my kid would've been ok with it. There was seating outside and a limited set up inside. It appeared to me they were mostly set up for to go orders, which was what we wanted anyway. Good service - they listened to our requests and answered all our questions patiently. They rang a bell when I tipped, which was pretty funny. At least I think that was what the bell was for.

Yelp
If you like, even just like chicken- don't walk RUN to this place! The decor is so unassuming, with Korean boy bands decorating the walls and a bamboo screen separating you from the kitchen. But there is a magician in the kitchen! Perfectly crisp beautifully flavored chicken. My husband got the wings box (Devil garlic sauce) It comes with perfectly crisp waffle fries, A side of delicious fluffy rice and an amazing side of slaw, probably the best slaw I've ever had. I got the tender box - also came with rice, waffle fries and slaw. Everything we ate was seasoned and perfectly prepared. Hole in the wall deliciousness. Exactly the gem you're looking for, for delicious take out or quick dine in- So great!
google avatar

Aizelle C.

Yelp
Most notable attribute was the crispness of the chicken. I got the furikake fried chicken and she was brispyyy! She tasted as her flavors advertised so that was chill :) The shop wasn't really a restaurant. It's kind of like an order and leave place. They only had like five tables and most of them were outside. But def a cool after college class vibe w your friends place!
google avatar

Yelp
I really expected more from this place based on the amazing Yelp reviews I read. Perhaps I came on an off day but I would call my experience mediocre at best. I was craving Korean chicken and Padadak doesn't have online ordering (I refuse to pay the up-charge for doordash or grub hub pick up) so decided to try Calvin's Korean Chicken as they have online ordering. I got the mix (which is 2 flavors- 4 tenders and 8 wings). The flavors I chose were garlicky soy and savory red. I also ordered sweet potato fries and mozzarella sticks. The chicken- the flavor was OK, I wasn't overly impressed with either flavor. The chicken meat was SO DRY which explains why they slathered the sauce on the chicken. Probably some of the worst chicken I've had and it wasn't cheap either. Mozzarella sticks- sadly this was the best part of the entire meal. They were nothing special but nothing was wrong with them either. Sweet potato fries- they were super soggy... not much else I could say about them. I likely won't be back. Next time I'm craving Korean Chicken I'm just going to be patient and wait for padadak in store.

Yelp
Our go to spot! Best Korean fried chicken in San Diego! We get Calvin's way too often! It always hit the spot and never disappoints!
google avatar

Casey C.

Yelp
This is my second time at Calvin's. My overall verdict is that the flavors are great, and the price is great for the portion size. Instead of getting the box, this time I got the party size to share with friends. I thought that the wings are okay but the tenders are amazing! Very juicy and tender and crunchy on the outside. I tried garlicky soy and savory red (mild) flavors. Both are on the sweeter side. The slaw is refreshing without too much mayo. Pre-order online is super simple, timely, and easy! Definitely would come back.

Chuck L.

Yelp
I very rarely post 5 star reviews & truthfully I could dock them a half star for ambiance. However, the chicken is so good they get the full score! The chicken was crisp, but still juicy. The slaw and pickles added a nice sweet savory crunch complemented by the Devil Garlic sauce (half dozen choices). Turning the brioche bun inside-out to make a waffle bun is genius! The glazed side in keeps it from getting soggy & the pressed outside gives even more texture. The Cajun seasoned fries have flavor without being hot and were perfectly crisp. Probably the best chicken sando of 2024 for me & always a pleasure to support a small family business!
google avatar

Yelp
It's always a blessing to find safe fried chicken to eat. Calvin's Korean Fried chicken offers gluten free Korean Fried Chicken in it's own dedicated fryer! This is mostly a takeout spot, with a couple of tables outside for you to enjoy your meal. Gluten Free/ Dairy Free/ Nut Free Only the chicken and the waffle fries are fried in the dedicated fryer, not sure about everything else. 4/5 Wing Box I got the Garlicky Soy which was sweet, savory, and oh so crunchy. I like that they gave you multiple sides like rice, coleslaw, and fries so every bite had variety.

Yelp
Calvin's Korean Fried Chicken is a small restaurant located in a small plaza. Their signage says Murashi but the menu in the window is Calvin's. While their food isn't bad, it also wasn't somewhere that I would be chomping at the bit to return to. I dropped by Calvin's with a friend recently and we got their box meals. This is one of the few restaurants that still does not allow indoor dining, and you place your order at a table right at the entrance of the store. Calvin's only has a few tables and they were occupied when we went, but the surrounding restaurants have seating and were chill about us using it. I got the devil's garlic chicken tender box, which comes with two tenders, rice, waffle fries, and vinegar slaw. For almost $15, this was quite pricy for the amount and quality imo. The food came out quickly and seemed to be fresh fried. The rice has furikake sprinkled on top, which was a nice touch. The tenders weren't too large. The sauce was quite nice, and the garlic flavor was quite strong. It wasn't too spicy, maybe just a mild tingle, though it was listed as one of the spicier options available. The chicken was soft but felt a bit dry, and the inside wasn't very flavorful. The waffle fries were a bit too crispy for me, but they were tasty otherwise. I ate the rice a day later, and it held up nicely, and wasn't mushy. The slaw was crisp and fresh, but pretty one-dimensional, so it got a bit too sour for me. Overall, the food here was just alright. I might get it again if i was in the area, but this definitely doesn't make my list of cravable fried chicken.

Keshia R.

Yelp
Hubby and I ran into this place on a walk. It's in a shopping center next to a few food places. I was hungry and saw the sign. I looked in and it was pretty empty. I don't know how this place doesn't have a line around the corner. The service was impeccable and the food that we ordered to go was ready in no time. The restaurant it self doesn't have much of an ambiance. It's a small space but when I tell you that this food was finger licking good!!!! Whew!!! Baby!!! My son and my husband killed this! The waffle fries are slightly seasoned with Cajun seasoning and the rice is probably the best white rice I have ever had!! It's steamed to perfection, then seasoned so well. Now these garlic soy and mild sauce tenders and wings we my favorite! 10/10 recommend this place!!!!!

Yelp
I came here with high expectations and a growling stomach from my previous construction shift only to be met with disappointment. The service was good with the servers being attentive and making suggestions. Fries were delicious and crispy while being perfectly seasoned. Definitely the best part of this wing box. Slaw was unpleasantly sour and hard to swallow. Rice was moist and fluffy. The biggest downside was the chicken, the supposed main highlight of this restaurant. I found the chicken overly salty and dripping in sauce, making the batter soggy. I couldn't even taste any other flavor other than complete saltiness. The meat itself wasn't even juicy, just plain grease. Overall, I would go here only for the fries and nothing else. I left feeling disappointed and my stomach still growling from my construction shift.

Eric C.

Yelp
Great fried chicken! Garlick soy is amazing. Fries crunchy. A vinegar coleshaw snd furikake rice comes with the wings box. Honestly not shabby at all.

Yelp
I think I prefer this establishment over Cross Street kitchen for a few reasons: 1.) More desired side options of which most are relatively healthy if you want a break from fried or over fatty 2.) The takeout theme here is really easy and suits the whole fried chicken vibe 3.) Chicken used are hormone free and good quality That being said, I think if this menu was used at Cross Kitchen, it would be an instant hit. Because for those who want a cool fun atmosphere instead of a hole in the wall theme, they might prefer Cross Street. We came here with a friend and our dog. We were thankful to order right away with no line and grab a table outside. We ordered: 1.) Devil's garlic fried chicken tenders (5 stars) with butter rice and vinegar slaw (5 stars) 2.) Sides: buttered rice (5 stars), bowl of pickles (3.5 stars), waffle sweet potato fries (3.5 stars) I love that this eatery give you the option of ordering a vinegar slaw or even a salad. It cuts the fried taste of the chicken perfectly and adds a refreshing touch to your palate. I'm also a big fan of all the variety of sides offered here. Although I do wish next time my sweet potato fries are fries and not over crispy waffle fries! Lastly, the name of this shop needs to be changed to Calvin's, etc. Not sure if they are going through rebranding but right now the shop's name is Musashi and not Calvin's which causes some initial confusion.

Yelp
I got the devil garlic wings and it was yummy! The breading was crunchy and the flavor was good. For only 13.50 I definitely recommend it.

Yelp
I got the 10 wings (satins kiss) and it was good! I love it! Small place and love how the wings tasted! Going to be a regular since i work right next to it!

Yelp
OMG how have i not posted a review for this place! It's my Favorite Korean Fried Chicken! They are both very crunchy and tasty! I usually get the Devils Garlic which is mildly spicy, sticky and has a nice garlic flavor. On another occasion i've had the next higher heat level, Satans Kiss, which is a huge step up in heat. Same flavor as Devils Garlic but much hotter, if you like a lot of heat i think this is what you'd consider getting. I could eat it but it was just on the edge of enjoyable and too hot. I could eat one easily but after 2-3 i had to take a break and switch back to the devils garlic. I imagine the next level up in spice, Pure Evil is pretty unbearable and just pure heat, I'd advise against it unless you just eat everything with ghost chilies or habaneros all the time. If you don't like heat at all, id suggest just plain or furigake, which has sesame seeds and nori sprinkled on it. You can get them as tenders or wings but i prefer wings. I usually get 10 piece just wings and have rice at home but if you prefer they have a box with rice and fries as well. Calvins is located in a small strip mall off of Villa La Jolla Drive the parking lot can be crowded at times depending on the time. I usually go and order in person but you can also order ahead of time on their website which is probably the way to go. It's my favorite Korean Fried Chicken, I'm sure you'll find it to be one of the best in San Diego.

Yelp
This place deserves a great rating cause the crunch is spot on. The juiciness is great. The pieces are not too big. We took the one level below max spicy, which I think was called burn and it was not spicy at all. The spiciness level here are very low and next time I'd go for the spiciest and the soy garlic. Order the maximum amount of pieces of wings - they are worth the order

Yelp
Ummm... yeah, I'll be back! The sandwich I ordered was a cool korean take on chicken n waffles. We were not disappointed. We ordered both the medium heat and spicy. They were tip of the tongue hot but not to the point where you lost flavor in the heat. The chicken was tender and juicy. Delicious! Waffle fries were a great compliment and not too seasoned. We also ordered the jalapeño poppers. They were good but a little too much cream cheese for my liking. We highly suggest checking this place out. :)

Yelp
Used to come to this place when it first opened a few years ago. Used to be fresh, made to order chicken, which made this visit all the more disappointing. We came around noon and got served very quickly with tepid chicken that tasted frozen and stale. They've very clearly cut back on ingredient costs, using frozen chicken and fries, which given the pricing was reminiscent of stadium food. Very disappointing given how good this place used to be.

Yelp
Just came out of this place with an order of 10 plain fried wings. I ordered to-go, and when I got home, I was disappointed at the lack luster, flavorless wings. The crust was too thick, and I've had Korean fried chicken before, and these wings don't come close. I guess the red flag should have been how quickly they came out after I placed my order. Usually, an order of Korean fried chicken takes 15-20 minutes because they have to fried it to order. These were out in 5 minutes, so they're not fresh! Not a good way to just spend your money.

Yelp
We ordered via DoorDash for pickup. The chicken was very crispy. The soy garlic was good but on the sweeter side. The Diablo was okay. The wings are a tad small but the flavors are there. The slaw is sour and not pleasant. I couldn't finish the slaw and would not recommend it. Parking is available in the lot. I would return again if I were in the area.

Yelp
We stopped by and ordered 30 chicken wings and tenders in 4 flavors for a family gathering. The flavors were furikake, garlic soy, savory red and deviled garlic. I liked the garlic soy and savory wings the best. The ratio of meat to bone on the wings was good enough. The sauce on the savory red was like icing on a cake. The spice was mild, but the flavor was intense. Our order was ready when we arrived (we called 15 minutes ahead). It's a small, no frills kind of place for a quick bite.

Yelp
Calvin's is only open for take out right now and I suggested them for our office lunch. When I arrived, I ordered using the QR code in front of the eatery and waited for my order. We got the family combo and chose the furigake, savory red, and devil garlic for the chicken tenders and wings flavors. The combo comes with slaw, corn, edamame, large Cajun waffle fries, large onion rings, Caesar salad, and butter rice. It can definitely feed about 8 people! I can really taste the butter in the rice! The waffle fries were nice and crispy. I enjoyed the savory red and devil garlic flavors more than the furigake ones, since I love spicy and garlic so much. The tenders were huge and filling! It's a great spot to get your Korean Fried Chicken fix!

Yelp
This place is somewhat hidden but the food here is excellent. The dining area is very quaint and clean. The chicken and fries are cooked to order so it's fresh every time. The staff is friendly. The wings, chicken tenders, and fries are gluten free!

Yelp
Padadak Korean Chicken is very good chicken with flavors, texture, and taste that I've gone back for many times. Calvin's Korean Chicken is a very small scale place that wants to be like Padadak but can't quite make it. While the chicken looked good....well, that's it! The flavor and texture were missing...enough said.

Yelp
Service good, food extremely average. Tenders 30 seconds from being from dry. Didn't have that Korean BBQ chicken crunch. Flavors were good.

Yelp
A solid spot for some hot chicken! Calvin's is located in a small, slightly run down strip mall so if you're looking for atmosphere, don't expect much here. The interior of the restaurant is dark and dimly lit and they are currently closed for indoor dining, but you can find a couple of tables for outdoor seating. However, despite the lack of ambience, Calvin's has some pretty tasty chicken. I ordered a Tender Box ($13.50) which included 2 tenders, slaw, waffle fries, and a scoop of rice sprinkled with furikake. The food was ready within 10 minutes which was surprisingly a lot faster than I had anticipated. I got the Devil Garlic for my tenders which had a very mild and enjoyable kick to it. The tenders were a decent size and had a nice slightly crisp exterior which I really liked. I was really glad it came with a small side of slaw too as I really needed that refreshing acidic kick to balance out all the fried goodness from the chicken and fries. Not the friendliest of service, but as it's located near UCSD, it's definitely a solid spot if you're near campus!

Yelp
Calvin's is super hidden-- they don't have their own sign, but is right under the Musashi's sign. The employees were super friendly. I went during the heat wave, and they were suffering inside. There's no indoor seating, only order at the front and bring home. I got the sando, both the mild garlic flavor and the hot garlic flavor. Both were great! The hot garlic flavor was barely spicy. I think the slaw was delicious. I would do without the fries if I had the option. The bread was a bit soggy by the end, because they use brioche (and put it in a waffle press). I would go back! Looking forward to it.
