How To Spend A Day In Oakland Chinatown: Community Spaces, Restaurants, Shops, & More

"After years spent in a refugee camp in Hong Kong, the first meal Anh Nguyen desired after landing in America was a simple Vietnamese banh mi at then Cam Huong Deli. Nearly 30 years later, Anh took over the business from the retiring owner and has maintained the hot dishes and banh mi while freshening up the menu. Walking into the shop, it’s hard to avoid the luscious fragrance of the housemade pandan waffles, for instance. Anh, an enthusiastic marathon runner and vegan evangelist, recommends her lemongrass tofu banh mi: stir-fried tofu infused with aromatic lemongrass is wrapped in a crisp baguette and topped with tangy quick-pickled julienned carrots and daikon. It all comes together with a gratifying crunch." - daphne wu

Best Restaurants in Oakland Chinatown Open for Takeout and Delivery - Eater SF

"Cam Anh took over the space previously occupied by another popular, longstanding banh mi shop, Cam Huong, last year, and it’s still cranking out some of the neighborhood’s best sandwiches during the shelter in place, with a couple of tofu banh mi options for vegetarians to boot." - Luke Tsai

Cam Anh to Keep Spirit of Oakland Chinatown’s Cam Huong Alive - Eater SF

"In September, perpetually busy Oakland Chinatown banh mi spot Cam Huong permanently closed when its owner decided to retire. Now, a new owner is taking over the space with plans to retain most of the menu but upgrade the interior. “I plan to keep the spirit of Cam Huong,” Anh Nguyen told the East Bay Express. The new shop, Cam Anh, will also offer more vegetarian options. Look for it to open in January." - Janelle Bitker

Google
I had an amazing experience at Cam Anh Deli! The food is absolutely delicious, with a diverse range of authentic Vietnamese dishes that are both healthy and flavorful. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the service was exceptional—super friendly staff who made me feel right at home. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for tasty, healthy Vietnamese food. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
My go-to Banh Mi restaurant. The sandwiches are packed with flavor and the bread is crispy but not too crunchy, which I like. Highly recommended.

Google
Omg! The place is more delicious than before. I love that there's more vegetarian options. I got #10 banh mi, lemongrass tofu. It's braised tofu! So good! It taste fresh and clean. I'm so happy!

Google
Just got their chicken ban Minh sandwich. It’s yummy. Nice that it close to work. They have Apple Pay! Other places it cash only. The owner is super friendly. I will be back.

Google
Don't come here. I ordered the special combo banh mi + extra pate for $12. The sandwich had only 1 slices of each meat, the bread was very old and hard and they never have me extra pate. Do not eat here the food is sub quality.

Google
I came here on Saturday afternoon at 12pm. There was no line which is a clear giveaway that it is not popular with the locals. The bread was stale and hard. The fillings were ok; I was expecting a little more spice. For a banh mi that is priced $9+ I was definitely expecting more but I was disappointed The ice Vietnamese coffee ( cà phê đá) was bitter and harsh. Also in my cup, there was more ice than actual coffee. All in all, I would pass and look for other options. It’s too bad because the former sandwich shop in this location was fantastic. I believe it was called Cam Huang

Google
Its funny how all the high reviews are from white people who didnt grew up eating at this place. I havent been to this spot in over a decade and a lot has changed. The fried rice, eggroll, and banh mis were just so so bad smfh. Compared to 15 years ago this place is a shell of itself. Rice texture and taste felt like a couple of days old rice. The banh mi bread was definitely stale. The egg rolls were also old from what i can tell as it was super dry. Theres no way it came out of a fryer that morning. This place sucks which is why theres no more big lines for it anymore. Ive heard the rumors of the new owners destroying it but didnt realize it was this bad! Prices are also outrageous for bad food. White people love to inflate these reviews and trick people😂😂😂 Edit: At least its cleaner now for the white people

Google
The owner is super friendly and accommodating. We had the lemongrass tofu banh mi, spring rolls, and egg rolls. All were vegan. The owner is vegan and was very happy to serve fellow vegans. The kids loved it as well. Great prices and great food!!

Yelp
Been working in Oakland for 4 years and stopped by for the very first time. Got in and out really quickly with my take out order. Small place with ready to eat food. I chose a two item plate with chow mein, chicken and salt and pepper shrimp. The chow mein was tasty but had way too many veggies in it. Would have preferred more noodles. But that could have been the luck of the draw. The chicken was tasty but dry. Probably won't get that again. The shrimp was the best. A bit of a zest to it and cooked well. The shrimp were good size too. This I will get again. Overall you can have good days and bad days with ready made food. The food is sitting out there for who knows how long but there was a constant flow of customers.

Yelp
The bread was stale and hard. The BBQ pork was so dry, I can barely chew it. I often by BBQ pork in Chinatown, and this is awful in comparison. The taste is bland and the texture is hard cardboard. The two women working behind the counter were conversing and socializing with each other the entire time; the one helping me barely spoke to me even though I was the lone customer when I went it. I forced myself to eat half of the sandwich and threw away the other half.

Yelp
I really want to like this place but each time I gave this place a try it just disappoints me. I bought their egg rolls and it was probably old because they refried it. Egg roll was drenched in oil and it tasted like old oil. Separate occasion I bought their banh cuon. It was cold and hard. Skin was too thick. I also tried their porridge and Chinese donut. Porridge taste like it was old and reboiled many times, the taste and texture was just off. I can't explain it. It was like putting rice in a blender. That's how it looked. The Chinese donut was definitely old because it was stale. I am done giving this place another try. I wish Cam Huong was still here in Chinatown.

Yelp
Wow, didn't know this place had noodles. Pho, Bum bo hue and this "bun thit nuong" dish (at least I think that's what it's called. It's delish!! Tried their pho the other day! Yum. Good job Cam Anh!

Amanda L.

Yelp
All the food they microwave to warm it up so the meat was dry and no one wants microwaved food from a restaurant. The women who work there are really nice though, wish I could have given it more stars
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
Sandwiches are dry, small and expensive. Asked for no peppers, sandwich had peppers. Entree options are limited, $10 for an entree with a side of steamed rice, fried rice or noodles. The Thit Kho was tough and dry too.

Yelp
I like the place for a few reasons. First it's always neat and clean and never have I had anything bad from it. The lady's who work in the store are always inviting and kind. Today's lunch adventure drew me in for some noodle soup. I always order the Bún bò Huế. There is a picture hanging in their front window and it's number 1. Bún bò Huế is a spicy beef noodle soup. This soup is spicy, salty goodness. I needed it today! Yesterday I sat in the rain watching my 49ers and since I just couldn't get warm. Go Niners! I'm freezing all day and slightly hungover until I got my Bún bò Huế fix. My bones are now warm and all my bad choices yesterday are washed away. I'd love a nap but the soup will fuel the day. As I said above it's spicy and just the right amount of salty. It's a large portion I always have two meals from it. It's packed with almost spaghetti type noodles which I like. I wish they offered an egg noodle but they don't. There is a ton of season beef, some meat cakes and a delicious pork knuckle. They give you a bag full of fresh cabbage, jalapeño, sprouts, cilantro and onion. Plus the give you a Hoisin Sauce and packet of Sriracha. All total it's about 16.00 to 18.00 bucks but again packed with flavor and super tasty IMO. This establishment also offers a selection of Banh Mi sandwiches. My fav is the pork. They also have a hot tray bar for some quick grab and go.

Tracie C.

Yelp
If you must try this place on any given day - please do not order the banh mi. I ordered two ($9.50 each + tax) The bread WAS so hard - I couldn't bite into it. I'm giving it 3 stars because I haven't tried anything else. I'll just stick to my Ba Le for now.

Yelp
On a Saturday morning, I decided to try two banh mi sandwiches, the #14 with bbq pork and an op la egg banh mi, from Cam Anh. Unfortunately, both banh mi missed the mark in terms of freshness and flavor. For a solid banh mi, three essential elements are crucial: freshly baked banh mi, fresh ingredients, and flavorful meat. Regrettably, Cam Anh failed to deliver on all three aspects, resulting in a disappointing experience. The bread in the banh mi seemed like it was from yesterday, lacking the softness and freshness that are characteristic of a well-prepared banh mi. This immediately affected the first bite, where the bread and initial filling failed to impress. The second bite was equally underwhelming, as the protein lacked the expected flavor and appeal. The combination of these shortcomings left me unsatisfied with the overall taste and quality of the banh mi sandwiches. In addition to the food, I found the interactions with the staff, particularly one of the ladies who I believe is the owner, to be out of touch. Referring to customers as "dear" without a prior connection can come across as insincere and distant. This dear will not be back.

Yelp
I got a grilled chicken and combination banh mi here. Service wise it was fine, the service was quick and I appreciate the punctuality a ton as someone who doesn't talk a lot. There is also a ton of seating if you desire, and their set up is actually quite organized, so deciding your order is really easy. Flavor-wise is a different story, I'll be breaking this up between freshly made and saved for a couple of hours: I ate the grilled chicken one asap, straight off the bat, the texture of the bread was off. I wasn't sure if the bread was stale or under a heat lamp for too long, but it certainly was hard. The chicken, while having a nice, subtle char to its savory flavor, had various parts where you could tell that it was a little too dry. Not to mention that the various vegetables such as jalapeño and pickled vegetables are on the smaller size for portioning. For my combination order, I left it to rehydrate in the fridge for my next meal over to see if it helped. Straight off the bat, you could tell the bread's texture drastically improved. Additionally, the meats included in the combination banh mi are layered nicely and have a nice, distinctly familiar flavor. The paté itself is actually quite nice as well. However, the portioning for the vegetables were also on the smaller size, and while this was offset by the various layers of meat in this, I still feel like there can be more. Overall, I can't say my experience was entirely awful, I was happy with the service, and actually thoroughly enjoyed the combination banh mi much better. However, considering the price and the fact that you have to let the banh mi sit for a while before being able to enjoy it, I can't say that it was the best banh mí I've had. I feel this can be especially detrimental for things like grilled chicken and grilled pork, which I feel are supposed to be enjoyed warm and fresh in comparison. If you do get banh mí from here, please consider the filling you pick and if you would enjoy it hours later once it's cooled down. The sandwich bread being so hard and needing to be rehydrated from the fillings itself worsens the experience so much.

Yelp
Service was friendly No lines on a late afternoon. Food is less than mediocre. Nothing to get excited about. Bought 4 ban mi dac biet, all lacked toppings. other add ons, desserts, were not edible. Day old desserts? Yep, that's what I got. Staff even told me to heat it up when I got home.... As is, it'll get by.... I wanted it to be great, since it's on a busy street. Sadly, i wouldn't come back though.

Susan L.

Yelp
I used to love this place but under new ownership, it is terrible. I gave it 3 tries and each time I was disappointed. The food tasted old and stale. The last draw was last week when I ordered curry Chicken and it was $21! I was flabbergasted but even more disgusted when I tasted the chicken, stale/dry and not edible. I am NEVER going back. This place needs to be shut down, serving old ass food!

Yelp
By far my favorite banh mi places EVER! I've been coming here to get banh mi all my life, and I've yet to find a place that surpasses here. Prior to the pandemic, all the sandwiches used to be $3 per sandwich. Then, for a while, the store seemed to be closed. Recently, my mother and I paid a visit when we were in Chinatown and saw the store was opened. Turns out that the nice old lady who used to work and run the place retired and her niece took over. None of the old ladies are working here now, due to COVID. Due to COVID, food supply, and the fires, prices have doubled, and are now $6 per sandwich. Still, we want to support the business, so my mother and I ordered sandwiches to go. My personal favorite is the chicken. My mom asked for no peppers in her sandwich, yet both sandwiches ended up having peppers. Still, we still love this place very much for the warm, perfectly crisp and toasted bread, the crunchy veggies, and the savory meat. Be prepared to get crumbs everywhere! Delicious banh mi.

Yelp
Excellent bahn mi sandwich, and amazing service. I'll be back! Thanks! Wish I had taken a photo but I inhaled the sandwich and didn't get a chance.
google avatar

Vivian D.

Yelp
Some of the reviews are true, unfortunately. Sandwich is priced a bit high for the quality. I didn't get very much filling in it. I would have enjoyed it more if there were more veggies in the sandwich. Regarding the surprise charges, they did not explain tax is not included before checking out. Saw a customer who was confused with how much he was charged for a lunch plate. They explained afterwards, but I saw he was upset with surprise charges. Maybe putting a sign like "+ tax" will help customers and actually using the cash register so the customer can see tax is being added. If you pay by cash, they round down to the dollar so you save a few cents.

Jessica N.

Yelp
Had the worst banh mi here :-( The beef for my banh mi was microwaved. The beef tasted fishy (idk if the beef was drenched in fish sauce or what but I did not appreciate that it didn't taste like beef). It was lacking a lot of veggies. The sandwich was small for its price. The restroom was out of order, but to be fair, are there even any working restrooms in this area lol
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Two ladies were working when I walked in. There was one customer ahead of me. One worker asked what I'd like to order and I asked for a chicken banh mi. The other worker grabbed chicken from a bowl and microwaved the chicken. I asked for no cilantro and this seemed to annoy both workers they kept talking in their language but kept repeating the word cilantro. I was running on a short lunch break so I just ignored everything although now I wished I walked out. When I got back to work there was cilantro all over my sandwich and the chicken does not look edible at all. I should have trusted my gut instinct. Won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, as state i will give it a second chance. Glad i did, it actually has some improvement. I ordered the combo sandwich, the price from a $5 sandwich to a $6 sandwich. That is still good, i guessed. The bread has a good crunch, but not warm, but it is good, the meat is a bit skinny, but the cucumbers and sides are good to cool off the jalapeños. It was seasoned well. I guessed is difficult during the COVID time, is difficult to balance with limited services. I wished them luck with a family homed businesses.
google avatar

Wilson T.

Yelp
Its now 8.50 plus tax for a sandwich. Dont come here its not worth it. I made a mistake. Dont be like me.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Cam Anh had some big shoes to fill when they took over this location from the previous Vietnamese/Chinese food spot Cam Huong. Unfortunately they have no choice but to be compared with them because the food items are practically the same. So how do they stack up? Overall the prices are higher, options lower, and their Banh mi's are just a tad lower in quality. They open early at 7:30, but the food comes out slowly in the morning. The only options that early is chow mein, fried rice, and Banh mi. Beat to arrive after 10:30, when they display all their items. The ladies that work here are nice. Service is fast, especially when I usually come around 8am. The reason to come here is because they open early, but there are much better options in Chinatown after 9am.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Oh how I miss the old Viet sandwich place that was here before. It's been a few years since that place closed. I haven't had a chance to visit Cam Anh till yesterday since this other banh mi place I usually visit closed for some reason. Seeing a sign that read "Healthy Vietnamese Sandwiches" deterred me from Cam Anh for the longest time. Since I was craving Viet sandwiches yesterday and having no other options, I decided to try it out. I ordered a combination sandwich, the only type of sandwich I ever order. Once I got home, I toasted the whole thing to make it nice and crispy. After I finished, I just wasn't satisfied; it just didn't hit the spot for me. The sandwich was neither gross nor great. It looked identical to other combination sandwiches with all the fixings, but it just didn't wow me. Plus, it was $6.00 for the sandwich. I understand why the previous business at this location had lines down the street. I wasn't sure why this current location didn't have a lot of business till yesterday. I'll stick with my other banh mi shop for now.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
This used to be cam huong but they sold it. The people who took over charges $6 a sandwich plus tax. I figured since it's $6, there should be more meat. Got my sandwich and was completely disappointed with only a few slices of meat...definitely would not come back. Sandwich is also really dry -_- The meat also tasted a bit weird and it's the first time I couldn't finish a Banh mi. Stay away.
google avatar

Raymond H.

Yelp
If you want to pay high price for a stale bread bare minimum filling banh mi, this is the place to go. I went during lunch hour for a quick eat. It may have been an off day or something but I mean come on only 2 customers in the store. Is it that hard to at least heat the bread up?
google avatar

Kari C.

Yelp
Visited this place for lunch on their first day open. Not a lot of steam tray stuff, as they're still setting up. I was a fan of the old place, known for their authentic Vietnamese sandwiches. Fortunately, they've retained their old cook and similar recipes...but with a slight twist. The new owner, who I heard is a marathon runner, included more healthy and vegetarian options on the menu. This place is cleaner than the old one. The menu sign is not as cluttered. Employees speak both Vietnamese and Cantonese. Yes, the prices have gone up, but $4.50 for a good sized sandwich is still a deal in a rapidly gentrifying Oakland. I got my usual, the chicken banh mi sandwich, and it's almost the same. Seemed to have a little more pickled veggies and less spread. Still had a lot of freshly cooked chicken. Bread was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. I agree with the other review that said it had less MSG...not as tasty/greasy, however, not as thirsty either! I think it's still better than Ba Le (the other Vietnamese sandwich shop). Overall, similar, but not exactly identical to the old shop. I like the idea of a more healthy menu. Can't wait to try their other offerings!
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
I went on it's Grand Opening Day, and am the person who added them to Yelp. I'm very nostalgic about the long-standing Cam Huong. I've lost count the probably hundreds of times I've gone there ever since I was in middle school. This place is under a new ownership and seems to have some of the same items, different Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) and cooked food. The sandwiches are $4.50 each which seems like a significant increase compared to its predecessor. $4.50 is like San Jose prices. I ordered a pork belly banh mi. They made it pretty quick but there was no one else waiting since it's the first day. They put the bread (which I saw was delivered from Cam Huong Bakery up the street) in the microwave so it was warm. I wouldn't mind trying it again but this place definitely has big shoes to fill.
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
I think the original place Cam Huong was a bit better but it's still good here... though they may have hit or miss days during Covid times as many places do... but this review is for my favorite item here: ground pork and mushroom steamed rice rolls. Not sure the actual name of the dish, maybe banh cuon? It is one of their pre-made takeaway plates, comes with the Vietnamese spam on top and a small side salad. Fresh, healthy, and different!
google avatar

Liona L.

Yelp
I get bad reviews for poor food quality or bad customer experience, but in a pandemic, of course food prices would increase. Cam Anh was ran by one woman when I ordered from here. She was doing everything -- from taking orders, accepting phone calls, to making the food -- so don't be surprised if you have to wait a little bit. The food is definitely worth the wait, and my sandwich was pretty jam packed with ingredients. I got the combo (cold cuts and the works) banh mi and delicious. The bread is super crunchy here, which I honestly prefer it a little more soft, but it was still super good. Everything tasted good, just a classic and delicious banh mi. If you don't want to wait too long, just call ahead and make your order. Now is definitely the time to support local businesses.
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
I was disappointed with the grilled beef banh mi. The beef lacked color, the veggies were under-pickled, and there was no pate to be found. I wouldn't completely write the place off as the menu is large and the prepared meals are cheap. Maybe still give it a shot.
google avatar

Haley L.

Yelp
This place took over Cam Huong that used to be here. Why was this $5.50?? I understand the increase in prices in Oakland but the quality has gone down, even with the increase in prices. This is the emptiest banh mi I've ever gotten, there's barely anything in here. The bread tasted stale, there's barely any meat, and like 10 pieces of pickled radish/carrots. Who skimps on pickled radish and carrots? If you want banh mi, skip this place and go to Ba Le on International Blvd instead.
google avatar

Audrey A.

Yelp
Very inconsistent with their pricing. And lie about the actual price they charge. Three times this happened. The most recent was buying a banh mi at the counter stated will charge me $7. My statement shows $7.77. I don't mind paying the extra cents, i just don't like being lied to.
google avatar

Sydney J.

Yelp
I was attending a mid-autumn festival event at Clinton Park (Little Saigon) where Cam Anh was actually providing complimentary dessert drinks. I believe this is che ba mau (I've never had it before, so please correct me if I'm mistaken) which is a sweet dessert including pandan jelly (which comes in stringy green pieces), red beans, and small pieces of mung bean (yellow bits). It is a little hard taking off the lid without splattering your self, which happened to me and at least one other person so maybe different cups should be used, but the sweet itself was yummy. Definitely very sweet so would perhaps not be a favorite for those who have preference for low sweetness desserts, but I enjoyed the liquid portion as well as the red beans which were still solid and intact. I have passed by Cam Anh's actual shop many times in Oakland Chinatown, so I'll be sure to take a look and try their food or other drinks based on this.
google avatar

Kiera M.

Yelp
I work and live in the area and this is the spot where I come to for delicious authentic Vietnamese snacks and quick bites! I'm always greeted by the sweetest staff and the owner, Anh. Terrific service and team! I've been vegetarian for over a year now and this shop always accommodates me! Not only are their banh mi sandwiches are TO DIE FOR, they're also crazy affordable! This time around I wanted something different and they easily recommended in a custom order of the lemongrass tofu spring roll (v) and sweet spicy chili sauce (veg). It was so good that I may have to add this to my list whenever I stop by! Love love love this place and highly recommend!

Yelp
So I was really happy they finally reopened this place as it was my go to for Banh mis. There was always a line out the door and service was efficient and nice. I know others would disagree but I rarely had issues as I always tried to go at off peak times. At any rate, I've been to the newly reopened spot and no complaints. They brightened up the interior and the menu -part of it- is nicely written in calligraphy. The sandwiches are more expensive at $4.25 now but still just as tasty. I had the bbq chicken and the bread was warm and toasty and meat was tender and juicy. No jalapeños as usual for me and cut in half please! Menu items look the same from the sandwiches to hot foods. One day, I'll try the hot foods but ima creature of habit so sammies are my go-to! Support local businesses!

Yelp
$7 for old crunchy stale banh mi bread and old chicken teriyaki. Chicken had an off taste like it was yesterday leftover and hard. I did request extra pate. Not up to par like it use to. Will look somewhere else for banh mi. Thought I give it a try today but wasn't good at all. It was a waste. Hope they give it more quality if they're going to increase their prices, which they already did. I didn't take a pic of the chicken banh mi as it wasn't worth taking a picture of.

Yelp
Came to Cam Anh this afternoon and ordered two 3 items fried rice plates and one meatball bang mi. The lady came out from the back and didn't change her gloves and started making my banh mi. That was already a red flag for me. When she was scooping the fried rice, she made sure to slowly scoop the rice so i don't get too much on my plate. When she was done she noticed there was a little too much. So she picked up the spoon and scoop a little tiny bit out. Literally, just a tiny bit, nothing more than a dime. Later when I finally get to choose my entrees she was like you can get one chicken leg but have to get egg plants and nothing else. When on the menu it didn't stating that I will be limited when choosing my entrees. I thought after Covid has started they will be more sanitary with changing gloves and dealing with cash. I won't be surprised if this place get shut down. If you want to avoid getting exposed to Covid. MAKE SURE DON'T EAT HERE!

Yelp
Came early in the morning to kill some time before doing my taxes. Got that fresh out the kitchen food. Got two small chow mein boxes, one small fried rice, four bread, four sesame balls and four BBQ chicken...grand total: $30. Pretty affordable. They are Vietnamese and also offer other Vietnamese dishes. Looked good but next time. You can order in Vietnamese if you know it. Basically if you want a fast & easy but yummy vietnamese food. The place to go is here.

Yelp
For a to-go dim sum, Chinese, Vietnamese spot in Chinatown, this spot has pretty good customer service! The woman who helped us at the counter spoke great English and the ordering process was really seamless. We loved the selection of bahn mi's that they offer and we went with the combo sandwich, which was really tasty. They gave us a solid amount of meat and it was really delicious. We also really loved the cucumbers and pate spread they used. The bread had the perfect amount of crunch too. The downside for our experience was the har gow (6 pieces) that we got. It was obvious they had been sitting out for awhile so they were kind of hard to bite unfortunately. This wasn't entirely surprising given that it was 4pm and they probably had been sitting out for awhile. She did reheat them for us though. They have some seating in the back and offer a variety of hot foods and packaged Asian snacks.

Yelp
Cam Anh will definitely be compared to Cam Huong for a good while now. They have replaced Chinatown's beloved Cam Huong serving banh mi sandwiches and similar items. I went there recently and the place has be decluttered, much cleaner than before now. There are 3 ladies behind the line (speaking Vietnamese and Cantonese, of course English as well). It's a month in so I figured there would be some groove going? The line was a bit of a mess and no one kept track of who ordered what. There was a lot of yelling for who's order is up front and who paid/didn't paid. It was confusion up front and everything took a lot longer than people would've liked (there was grumbling and a bit of pushing surprisingly!). When I finally got my chicken banh mi, I was very excited ... but the expectation fell short. The bread was a little different (I thought they got it from the Cam Huong bakery but I guess they didn't? or I'm just tasting things differently?) and not very toasted. The chicken was very bland and dry, sparse in the sandwich as well. I get that they're going for a healthier approach compared to the chicken Cam Huong had before (a bit oily and probably had msg). The sandwich has too much mayonnaise but I was glad that the picked veggies was still good (could use a bit more though). The price of the banh mi went up, $4.50 for a chicken banh mi. There isn't much hot food options available. I got spring rolls the first time I was there (goi cuon), but the second time I stopped by, there wasn't any available. Final Thoughts: I'm really sad that I don't have a go-to place for banh mi in Chinatown anymore but fingers crossed I can find one (one day). Not sure if I'll stop by a 3rd try any time soon, maybe I'll give them a few more months before the next try.

Yelp
Cam Anh Deli takes over Cam Huong's spot. little apparent change is evident in the infrastructure. offerings: banh mi, snacks, steam table foods eats: combo banh mi (4.50) -large banh mi with crunchy crust, loaded with lots of fresh crunchy radish, cucumbers, jalepenos, cilantro, carrot shreds, single slice of pork loin`, 2 other brownish meats, little flavoring tasted: pate, fish sauce, mayo, etc. + a touch of msg. essentially bland. *quality needs to be improved. 3.5 stars leftovers: -not a lot of food was on display. many varieties keeping things fresh by stocking little inventory. -no prices seen except for banh mi, same as Cam Huong. -quick, friendly service/

Yelp
Cam Anh is good, but it's definitely not Cam Huong. I tried out Cam Anh's banh mi twice in the past month and both times, I thought they were just tasty, but not on the level of Cam Huong. In part, it's different now- not just in taste, but also the atmosphere. Their hot food trays options are a lot more limited and the hustle and bustle of customers are gone. Prices have gone up to $4.50 for sandwiches which is reasonable, but also another change. Fyi-my dac biet sandwich had too much mayonnaise, but the fresh pickled veggies and pate made up for it. It's still a decent place for a quick lunch option and I hope they improve their sandwiches in the future.

Yelp
I'm SO happy this deli re-opened. I can tell that the new owner is doing her very best, and I've enjoyed everything I've eaten from here so far: grilled chicken banh mi, with pate (cause that's how we Viets roll). I've enjoyed all of the hot food so far: caramelized cat fish, stuffed bitter melon, omelettes, and glass rice noodles. Can't really go wrong! I appreciate that it's less greasy than how it was previously cooked - I'll sacrifice the fat for a healthier meal. One of the biggest things I love is that the owner allows me to bring in my own stainless steel take-out container to fill. Yay for reuseables! I don't mind at all that the prices have gone up (hello, inflation people!? Small business owners have to make money!), because it means supporting a local family. I admit that the workers seem to be slower at making sandwiches than previous employees. I guess it's just because they've only recently opened so they're still getting back in the swing of things. There's usually a good amount of people here still, so be prepared to wait 5-10 minutes for your food to be ready. I'm rooting for them to succeed! I come here at least once a week, and it's a great place to get authentic Viet-Chinese food at a great price. Plus, they take card.

Yelp
Like the previous reviews mentioned, while the ladies wear gloves, they touch everything with their gloves and don't change them. One of them took cash from the previous customer and went back to grabbing meat and assembling my banh mi. I still took a chance and ate the banh mi. It was a good basic banh mi- crispy bread, yummy grilled pork with nicely pickled vegetables. I just wish they'd change their gloves.

Yelp
Man i was so disappointed when cam huong left this location and that was a shame. Whats even worse is this sorry and sandwich spot came in and replaced them. I dont know why they left when they were doing so well. Anyways i thought the name change was odd so i gave it a shot just to see if it was under new ownership. Man this place serves so of the jankiest vietnamese sandwiches oakland has to offer. Shit was wack. I thought i might of hit them on a bad day so i gave it a second chance. Same outcome janky ass sandwich with barely any flavor. I let my wife try it and she was like what the fuck happened? Did you buy this sandwich somewhere else? I told her no its new owners or some shit. She told me dont every her no wack ass sandwich like that again. At this point i knew this place was no longer the spot so i stopped coming here period. Not even worth a 3 try at this point.

Yelp
This place SUCKS!!! The proclaimed banh mi is a joke. Real skimpy, no paté, very little pickled carrots and daikon. The bread was stale. Yes, prices are up due to COVID but I didn't mind supporting local eateries but damm!!! Can I get a decent sandwich for the price? A half sandwich at Safeway had more filling than this thing... I thought I'd give them another try and asked for some fried rice and BBQ pork. The lady calculates in her head and comes up with $7.50. I said okay, I'll support. She takes a regular tray and scoops a corner full of rice and throws 6 strips of cut BBQ pork. The BBQ pork seemed day old and the fried rice was so damm dry... Definitely not venturing back to this spot. This used to be Cam Huong, back in the day but this Cam Anh is nothing like Cam Huong... Save yourself the time and skip this spot!

Yelp
First of a home I always like the older place, Cam Huong that was there for years and years and years. Such a great family-run place! I was a little skeptical when the new place open, but Anh is a delightful, creative and positive presence, and she puts her own touches on the typical Vietnamese deli foods. A little bit of a lighter touch, many vegetarian and vegan options. My absolute go to that I never miss is the lemongrass tofu sandwich! I'm not a vegetarian but I always get this when I am there. She recently had me try the coconut waffle and ohmy God it's amazing! And it's vegan!

Yelp
I'm a self-proclaimed banhmi expert, having eaten vietnamese sandwiches for several decades across many cities and towns. Because my preferred Oakland spots were closed (preference in order: 1. Ba Le on e14th and 19th Ave, 2. Mom's bun mi on 14th Ave, 3. Cam Huong) I had to scramble to find a spot that's open on this day during covid19. Enter: Cam Anh This place is terrible on multiple fronts. The bread wasn't fresh and the ingredients were skimp at best (typical restaurant focused on bottom line short term profit over building quality and loyal customers), and sandwiches cost above average compared to other vietnamese sandwich spots, including all of my preferred choices above. I ordered six sandwiches (2 combos, 2 grilled chicken, 2 grilled pork) and everyone who ate it agreed they were mediocre sandwiches compared to many other spots in the east bay. I usually try to give restaurants at least a second chance, but this place doesn't deserve that, nor do they deserve your hard earned money, until they improve the quality of their sandwiches. Advice: Don't charge a premium while providing mediocre products.

Yelp
I wanted to love this, but the sandwiches here are probably some of the worst I've had. The bread was very stale and they barely put anything in the sandwich. I ordered the grilled pork, which was dry like jerky and they only put a few pieces. I won't be coming back here.

Yelp
Came in for sandwiches early Sat morning, grilled pork and bbq pork belly. Bread was toasted, a bit too crunchy and dry. It was ok, but I've had way better. Nice shop with lunch entrees too.

Yelp
Obligatory COVID19 disclaimer: They're still open! You just need to call to order ahead for pickup. I work in the city, so rather than paying San Francisco prices for subpar chain food I often found myself stopping by Cam Anh every morning on the way to BART to pick up a banh mi dac biet. I think that's the best combination of earthiness (from the pate), savory (cha lua), and freshness (cilantro, pickled radish/carrot, cucumber, jalapenos). The owner Anh is super nice and friendly, and while I never got to experience the original Cam Huong, I'm more than satisfied with Cam Anh.

Yelp
A good place to eat, with many different bahn mis to choose from. My go to is the grilled pork bahn mi.
