Yelp
San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood has a number of trendy restaurants to choose from ranging in different types of cuisine. One of the newest on the block of Union Street is Camino Alto, which focuses on modern contemporary cuisine focusing on nutritious and sustainable ingredients. Credit goes to owner Josh Copeland who credits a personal health journey with the adaptation to clean and simple ingredients that led him to the creation of the menu for Camino Alto, which began over two years ago replacing the long standing Pane e Vino Trattoria Pizzeria. What brought a friend and I here for dinner on a recent weeknight was the fact that Camino Alto was participating in San Francisco Restaurant Week for the Spring of 2024. With this promotion, which happens just twice a year, diners get the chance to sample a restaurant that they have wanted to support with an affordable three-course meal, and businesses get to promote themselves to the local community and out-of-town tourists who happen to dine there at just the right time. My friend and I have wanted to try Camino Alto since they opened as their creative entrées using fresh quality local ingredients created enough buzz that when we found out that they were participating in Restaurant Week, we took our chance.
Reservations via the Resy website were easy enough to make, plus not having to put down your credit card certainly made things smoother. When we arrived there were plenty of tables inside their dining room, but as we made our way to their back patio, they placed us at a corner table underneath a skylight as the sun was setting, so we asked to sit indoors, of which they obliged. The menu at Camino Alto is simple and straightforward as exemplified by the fact that the print on the menu appears to be written out by handwriting. With a variety of entrées that change with the seasons thanks to the use of fresh produce, we came for their restaurant week menu as we were intrigued with their menu options. For my first course, I ordered their Wood Oven Japanese Sweet Potato and California Romesco, while my dining mate ordered their Yuzu Patty which was served with Daikon Radish, Avocado, and Asian Pears. For our entrées, I ordered their Dutch Oven Pork Shoulder and Creamy Beans served with Pico de Gallo and Avocado Gallo, while my dining mate ordered their Wood Charred Cauliflower and Chermoula served with Black Butte Chickpea and Black Sesame Puree. And for our dessert course, I ordered their Apple Mint Crisp topped with whipped coconut and my dining mate ordered their Dark Chocolate Pot de Créme topped with salty whipped creme.
To pair with our meals I ordered a glass of their 2020 Chateau de Javernand "Les Gatilles" which is a gamay wine from Beaujolais Cru from Chiroubles, France and my dining mate ordered their 2018 Tenuta Ponte 'Carazita', which is an Aglianico blend from Irpinia DOC in Campania, Italy. The wines paired perfectly with our entrees, as the highlights of our meal were their first course appetizers as they highlighted the freshness of the ingredients that would compose our meal. Both of our main courses turned out to be disappointments as my Pork Shoulder was basically a build your own soft taco dish as it came with two tortillas to assemble your meal, but when served lukewarm at best, this meal came across as totally unimaginative. My friend's cauliflower was slightly better, but with a large floret cut into halves, we felt it too wasn't worth the regular thirty dollar price point. Our desserts too were rather ordinary as my Apple Crisp was nothing more than a granola mix with whipped creme and not what we imagined what an Apple Crisp would actually be. Our total bill was over 151 dollars which would not have been that affordable without the San Francisco Restaurant Week deal. The atmosphere and service is what shined through on our visit to Camino Alto as they do bring healthy and hearty dishes to the table, while promoting a friendly convivial atmosphere, so you can at least feel good about dining out in this trendy neighborhood. With the success vibe that Camino Alto is giving off, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and for that we can all be grateful.
