Camino Alto - Review - Cow Hollow - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Restaurants serving seasonal, shareable plates are as common in SF as recreational boulderers. This Cow Hollow spot is a perfectly pleasant one. Camino Alto draws influence from Mexican and Asian cuisines, seen in the pork shoulder served alongside tortillas and saucy beans, and the adorably dubbed “yuzu party,” a salad made with daikon, avocado, and crisp hunks of Asian pear. Though nothing on the menu is necessarily transformative, the dishes are still well-executed, and ideal to split with a date in the minimalist dining room or surprisingly spacious back patio. When you’re in the area and want a nicer-than-average dinner spot (they also do weekend brunch), this place is a great bet." - Julia Chen

I could not say enough great things about this restaurant. This is by far the best restaurant I’ve ever been to in the city. The owner is amazing. It’s a mission driven restaurant. He knows where every single ingredient comes from and it’s usually super local and right down the road on top of that. The food was absolutely amazing. I have no notes for this restaurant. They did everything perfectly. The menu is always curated to what’s in season and I absolutely love that if your health conscious this is absolutely the perfect restaurant for you and even if you’re not health conscious, but you just like high quality food you can’t go wrong with Camino alto They play great music, they had amazing mock tails, which sometimes can be hard to find. I loved that they had a genuine menu for mock tails that were thoughtfully curated, and honestly just tasted amazing. Also super affordable mock tails. I went to another restaurant the other week and their mock tail was $18 which I literally couldn’t believe because it’s a mock tail. I love that Camino alto has affordable mock tails and honestly they’re way better than the $18 Mocktail.

I appreciate Camino Alto for their mission of eliminating seeds oil and high omega 6 ingredients, and opt for grass-fed beef/pasture raised chicken/pork. A gem in the mist of generic food industry standards. This is why I came back for the second time, although there is room for improvements. Accessibility: restaurant is located near the Cow Hollow neighborhood. Not super touristic so parking is somewhat easy to find (street meter, free after 6pm) Chance of getting a table: somewhat easy for one or two people if you don’t have reservation. They’ll most likely seat you at the bar. If more than two people then reservation is highly recommended. Service quality: meets standard. Could use one more waiter during rush hour for better attention. But I’m not really looking for being treated like royal here. Atmosphere: beautiful layouts with a back patio seems to be a greenhouse/sun room. Music not too loud. And good temperature control so you won’t freeze or sweat out. Menu: seasonal. Pros: fresh, in season items; creative dishes; dealerships flexibility. Cons: if you really like a dish it might be gone the next time you visit :( Food consistency: this is an area for improvement. First time dining our foods were mostly very salty. Second time dining the food was under seasoned. Besides that, I can tell they pick their ingredients with great quality standards. We got a chance the speak with the owner, who was bussing table himself (great leadership!) We learned about his mission for the restaurant. As a person who practice non-seed oil diet and corn fed diet etc, this might be one of the few options for us when in the city. Overall, we love to support this place and will come back when there’s chance. Great work!

We've come here a few times now. They definitely get busy at night, but for breakfast they have less people and you can order at the counter. Like everyone says the food is amazing and healthy. I think I've met the owner and some of the employees and everyone is super nice. They even offered to let us hang out after they closed the kitchen. Definitely leave time to find parking or better yet take Uber or something.

We’d heard great things about Camino Alto, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Every dish was delicious, and there’s a wide selection of drinks to pair perfectly with the food. Highly recommended — whatever you order, it’s gonna be delicious.

Google
Camino Alto was a great find on a recent trip to SF! We visited on Saturday morning - during brunch they have counter service and a barista/full coffee bar. We ordered the carnitas tacos and chicken mole enchiladas - both were light but satisfying, perfect for lunch/brunch. While the food was solid, my favorite part of our visit was dining on their private back patio with our dog. The space is fully enclosed away from the hustle and bustle of the city and was thoughtfully designed and super lowkey.

Went here for a late bday and 1 year anniversary and WOW. i’ve been wanting to try this place for awhile and im so glad we did because it was delicious. every ingredient was so fresh and high quality. its clear this place is a labor of love with excellent service. the king salmon was a fantastic texture and the ribeye was out of this world. don’t sleep on the dessert w/ coconut cream either!

We walked by this place about a year ago one day while exploring the area. The facade and decor were enticing so we added it to our list. We finally went last weekend for dinner and, in my opinion, it was a bit disappointing. Our waitress came to our table, took out drinks, brought them and bounced wo even saying it was the end of her shift, I was taking a sip as I saw her walk out by and out the door. Our dishes took quite a long time and the flavors (again, in my opinion) were a tad on the dull side. I try to give grace when leaving reviews, but in this case, both the service and food were par at best, the decor though, still nice.

EDIT: I have modified my review per your request. Please show it to the Martian, I don’t want them to blow the planet up! Brussel sprouts with bacon and pomegranate We enjoyed the brussel sprouts. The addition of puffed rice was really clever! The pomegranate kernels were also a nice seasonal touch. The crispy bits of bacon were a well-executed classic companion to the roasted sprouts. However, I will say the dish was a bit oily. Roasted pork shoulder This dish was essentially served in a “build your own taco” kind of format with shredded pork shoulder, cabbage, beans, and tomatoes. It came with two thick tortillas and hot sauce on the side. Overall, I would say the pork was cooked very well but the dish as a whole was lacking a punch and was somewhat uninspired. It felt like they drained the heritage out of the dish without elevating it enough to compensate. Petrale with crispy rice The petrale sole that came with a yellow coconut curry-like sauce was light and bright. It was served with crispy rice and roasted green beans on the side. The fish itself was delightful. However, the crispy rice did not do enough to ground the dish - perhaps regular rice instead? Pot de crème Finally, the chocolate pot de crème for dessert came with a really nice salted whip cream. The chocolate component itself though was suspiciously reminiscent of a pudding cup and lacked the luxury a typical pot de crème should have. In summary, I overall enjoyed the meal as the food was good but it definitely didn’t blow me away and quite frankly was priced above where it punches. The service was nice and the patio out back was gorgeous. We were initially seated at a corner table for two (see picture) that made me feel like I was out in time out but they were gracious enough to move us when requested.

Yelp
Amazing cuisine, ambience, and service! 100% perfect date night spot. We loved their ceviche, ribeye steak with a couple of glasses of Sangiovese. Can't wait to come back to the cute neighborhood restaurant.

Yelp
I've walked by several times and always made a note to stop in. Finally made a reservation for a birthday dinner - this was relatively easy to score, and especially so because we made an early one (5PM). Saw people easily walk in as well. Because we were so early, it was a quiet and cozy dining experience. Part of why I wanted to come was the decor as well - a lot of neutral and calming furniture/interior color choices. I'd describe the food here as New Californian with a lot of East Asian influence. We ordered: - Wood oven Japanese sweet potato: roasted potato over a roasted red pepper sauce. Simple, but really tasty - maybe one of my favorites of the meal. This was a pretty substantial dish. I think they give you 2 whole potatoes at least (or that's what it felt like lol). Order if you're super hungry. - Seasonal beet salad with ricotta: pretty sure this isn't on the menu anymore as they switch out menu options based on what's fresh. I love a beet salad and this was really refreshing - had some nice crunch from the nuts. - Thai yellow curry with cod and snap peas, toasted quinoa: not bad. Good flavor but wasn't the stand out this time. Fish was cooked nicely though. - Chocolate pot de creme: I'm a chocolate girl and chose this over the fruity option but this was average at best. Would probably skip the dessert if I were to come again. Service staff was attentive but not overbearing. They also gave great recommendations and made the meal very comfortable. Would come by again for a casual dinner - I enjoyed myself and had a good birthday!

Yelp
Came here for SF restaurant week! Had the option of ordering off the regular menu or the SF restaurant week menu which is what we did. It was $45 for an app, entree, and dessert. Originally our reservation was for 7:30 but our friend had to last minute change it to 6 and the staff was extremely accommodating to our needs! The ambiance was really nice. The vibe inside is super cute. Although it is a little hard to hear with all the background noise and music, but not terrible. Service was great! Our servers were really attentive. My water was always full and they were always checking in on us. As for the food, I was sadly disappointed. The ceviche and chips were not that good. The chips were so stale, no crunch to it at all. I had to quite literally rip the tortilla chips apart with my hands just to get a bite in. When I would eat it, it would take me an insane amount of bites just to eat it. The presentation of the ceviche too was a bit off putting. What surprises me is that this is supposed to be $25! Not worth the actual price. The pork shoulder was just okay. I felt like it was bland and missing more flavor. Once again, the presentation was eh. I also believe this is supposed to be $38 which to me is insane. Finally dessert, it was a chocolate mousse. First bite was good but after eating more it was getting extremely sweet. Overall, ambiance and service is great! However, the food is overpriced, extremely bland, and lacks presentation.

Yelp
Some plates are really tasty - rockfish (not the actual fish but the crispy rice is da bomb), ceviche were amazing. On the other hand, Stratcciatella bread was way overcooked and dry. Didn't care for the desserts either - mousse and crumble were too sweet. Whiskey ginger drink was good, spritzer not so much. So it's a hit or miss but when it's good, it's good. The service is great and waiters are attentive. So is the ambiance. Clean, bright with lots of pretty flowers. They also charge 4% extra for service.

Yelp
This whole restaurant is an aesthetic. From the time you enter, sun drenched fiddle fig and Nina Simone to the walk down the corridor that open into an intimate lush dining area. The plants lining the room, the candles, the pop of color from the rose to miso sauce on radicchio, to ginger coconut sauce over rockfish, to strawberry rhubarb and chocolate pot for dessert. It is all vibrant yet airy and relaxed. The service is friendly and sweet. Most importantly the menu is creative, delicious yet light. My favorite was the California rose, whipped eggplant, yellowtail ceviche, the coconut sauce on the rockfish, the salty sweet pot de crème and strawberry rhubarb tart. Oops that's everything!

Yelp
Surprisingly good, nice spot, good location. We dined on the back patio which was nice but got pretty warm. Brunch has a nice menu with some unique dishes. Definitely would go back.

Yelp
Me and a friend went for brunch on a Sunday morning. It was pretty empty. The employee at the counter answered our questions about the menu and we ordered and went out back to sit in the patio space. The ambiance was perfect. I loved sitting in the enclosed patio in the sun. I got an espresso which was fine. They didn't have raw sugar which I usually use, only white or coconut sugar. I got the La vaquera with over hard eggs. It was so fresh and healthy. I also asked for additional hot sauce which they brought out in a cute bottle. It was a really lovely brunch!

Yelp
Camino Alto has a nice interior layout - enjoyed the relaxed and intimate setting. I appreciated the clean ingredients - not overly rich or over salted. Highlight was the prime rib - nice garlic seasoning and broccolini and potato sides. Halibut was slightly fishy and underwhelming. Do not expect the desserts to be very sweet as well.

Yelp
Quaint cafe. You order and pay first at the counter and then they serve you at your table. I got the pork belly as recommended by many reviews and it was yummy!

Yelp
Came for restaurant week with friends and it was great value! App, main, and dessert for $45!

Yelp
Came here for restaurant week and wow! We always pass this place and have been meaning to try so restaurant week allowed us to do that. The menu was well worth the value. On first glance the apps didn't sound as appetizing to us but we were so surprised when they entered our mouths. Such unique and delicious flavors. The rockfish was also so unique and delicious. Felt very fresh and local. We loved the farm to fork vibes. We can't wait to return. They have a nice back patio too! Good vibes.

Yelp
Really nice "new Californian" restaurant with great ambiance and nice vibes, lighting, and noise level. We were whisked to a backyard area for dining, which is surprisingly warm even on a cold night and intimate. Our waiter, Olivia, was a superstar and provided terrific service, and I love the handwritten menus that are dated, it makes the experience feel special. We got the latkes, the yuzu party (salad is undergoing a rebrand and is called a party now), the halibut, and the steak. The starters were arguably better than the mains, but they were both tasty. The wine list was pretty comprehensive. A little on the pricey side, but I enjoyed my experience and will be back!

Kenneth K.

Yelp
Cool vibe but food was a let down. Website and menu descriptions are better than the actual food experience. Food wasn't bad, it's overpriced. Average.

Alison ..

Yelp
As someone who is allergic to all refined oils, I love this place! The entire menu is safe for me. I appreciate that ghee and tallow are used here, other 'healthy' restaurants often use palm oil or avocado oil. The beer battered lion's mane had the perfectly crunchy breading that I've been craving. The tuna ceviche was good but I'm not a fan of the tortilla chips, they are on the softer side. I like salty, crunchy food. I would love if they added fried chicken to the menu.
google avatar

Florence K.

Yelp
Came back to my favorite restaurant for my birthday! I love this restaurant because it is easy to get a reservation and the restaurant has a farm to table like cuisine so the menu changes daily! We ordered the sweet potato to share and it was such a big portion! Then I got the halibut, which was cooked perfectly. For dessert, we got the apple crisp and chocolate dessert and the chocolate dessert was so good. They also did something small for my birthday, which I really appreciated!

Yelp
Disappointing birthday dinner at a restaurant just trying to be too much. Showed up with a party of 8 and right from the start, the service was strange. Only gave us two menus for the table - seemed a bit put out when we asked for more. Had a selection of appetizers: Brussels sprouts - good, not amazing Ceviche - where's the tuna? Waited a loooooong time for entrees and they were out of halibut so they said they would do the sole and dress it as halibut.... two people ordered sole dressed as halibut and two people ordered the sole.... when they served them, they served them backwards... so people didn't get what they ordered... realized about half way through eating... sheesh. New york strip was super expensive but was inconsistently cooked and super fatty in places. Cauliflower was good, but super dry Pork shoulder was fine.... There were 2 tables left at the end of the night with 4 people working there but they couldn't seem to have attentive service... mostly they were just talking to each other and organizing the bar. We spent way too much for an average dinner and won't be going back to this place... they basically don't care what kind of experience they give their customers. Frustrating. And the food is just meh. More like "Comida Baja".

Yelp
MY FAVORITE RESTURANT BY FAR! As a person with celiac disease I AM SO HAPPY THAT THIS IS AN ALL CELIAC(GLUTEEN FREE) SAFE RESTURANT! The owner is also really nice and caring! This restaurant has really nice workers and AMAZING FOOD!! The environment is beautiful and nice! And just so peaceful to sit down and enjoy everything!

Yelp
Couldn't recommend this spot more! Every staff member was extremely nice and the restaurant had a great ambiance for a date or just grabbing dinner with a friend. We ordered the tuna ceviche, the stracciatella cheese and the flank steak. Each dish had a unique combination of flavors, but were all extremely delicious and generous portion sizes. The menu changes frequently keeping it new, fresh and seasonal. I definitely will be coming back here and excited to see the new items on their menu.

Yelp
Came here for SF Restaurant week and had a good experience! We walked in as a group of 7 right at opening without reservations and they were very accommodating. They were able to move things around so that we didn't have to wait hours to be seated, and that we were also able to sit together. The inside has a California coastal feel with the white oak wood and wishbone chairs. Very comfortable and classy atmosphere. The bathrooms were also clean. From the Restaurant Week menu I chose the Japanese sweet potato, pork shoulder, and then the apple crisp for dessert. The sweet potato had a wonderful crispy skin and went well with the orange sauce. The pork shoulder was tender and flavorful. The apple crisp came out warm with crunchy granola and a super light creme on top. I liked all of my dishes. The portions were also larger than I was expecting and I was definitely stuffed by the time I left. The house-made non alcoholic coriander limeade was also fantastic. Not overly sweet and had a nice herby flavor. Overall, I had a great time at Camino Alto, and would recommend this spot to friends and family looking for solid new American food in a

Yelp
Amazing experience here! In addition to Camino Alto focusing on clean eating and no inflammatory oils, all of our food was incredibly flavorful and tasty, and the hostess and waiters were a pleasure. 10/10 would recommend. I'm very excited to try their brunch next.

Consumer A.

Yelp
Amazing flavors! I had the rockfish with a crunchy coconut rice. It was an experience. The chef came by and visited. I felt like I was at his home. The atmosphere is so welcoming. The service was so attentive to details. My husband had the flank steak with beans and a fried egg. We want to come back often! 4 different servers checked on us. I felt like royalty. Every table was filled. Wow what a jewel in Cow's Hollow! I was here once before and watched a young 6 yr. old girl order the chicken for her birthday. She told me how great it was. I am coming back for that chicken. I had leftovers because the portions are huge. I am making a breakfast omelette with mine.

Yelp
Favorite restaurant ever. Everything tastes so good and healthy. Julie is crazy. Roxy was our server and she did a phenomenal job with her recommendations and service. Can't wait to come back!!!!!!

Yelp
I reallyyyy wanted to love this place. I walk by it all the time and its cozy vibe with seasonal, handwritten menus always enticed me. When I actually went, the restaurant was as beautiful and charming as I expected it to be. All the food was absolutely delicious, especially the ceviche. However, the service just tanked the whole experience for me unfortunately. To be honest, the service was pretty inflexible and indifferent with us. I would want to return again since the food was so great, though if the service is not improved do not think it would be worth coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for early weeknight dinner. It is such a cute little restaurant with intimate vibes. Lots of great choices on the menu! We ordered the burata, Japanese sweet potato and ceviche to start. Each dish was amazing! I could not stop eating the ceviche and then the slight sweetness of the potato was a perfect balance. Our steak got delayed (like 30min) so we spoke to Josh and he hooked us up with a bonus pork shoulder so delicious. I'm real picky with steak and the steak was on point! I would definitely go back. Yum!

Yelp
Food was good, halibut was slightly dry but the sauce and the whipped celery was great. Vibes were nice, good date spot.

Yelp
We came in June the night before Escape From Alcatraz. We got to chat with Chef Josh and found that he is passionate about his food, personable and has a sense of humor we appreciated. High quality ingredients, standards, level of service. Great ambiance and the staff was friendly and seemed to enjoy working there.

Yelp
San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood has a number of trendy restaurants to choose from ranging in different types of cuisine. One of the newest on the block of Union Street is Camino Alto, which focuses on modern contemporary cuisine focusing on nutritious and sustainable ingredients. Credit goes to owner Josh Copeland who credits a personal health journey with the adaptation to clean and simple ingredients that led him to the creation of the menu for Camino Alto, which began over two years ago replacing the long standing Pane e Vino Trattoria Pizzeria. What brought a friend and I here for dinner on a recent weeknight was the fact that Camino Alto was participating in San Francisco Restaurant Week for the Spring of 2024. With this promotion, which happens just twice a year, diners get the chance to sample a restaurant that they have wanted to support with an affordable three-course meal, and businesses get to promote themselves to the local community and out-of-town tourists who happen to dine there at just the right time. My friend and I have wanted to try Camino Alto since they opened as their creative entrées using fresh quality local ingredients created enough buzz that when we found out that they were participating in Restaurant Week, we took our chance. Reservations via the Resy website were easy enough to make, plus not having to put down your credit card certainly made things smoother. When we arrived there were plenty of tables inside their dining room, but as we made our way to their back patio, they placed us at a corner table underneath a skylight as the sun was setting, so we asked to sit indoors, of which they obliged. The menu at Camino Alto is simple and straightforward as exemplified by the fact that the print on the menu appears to be written out by handwriting. With a variety of entrées that change with the seasons thanks to the use of fresh produce, we came for their restaurant week menu as we were intrigued with their menu options. For my first course, I ordered their Wood Oven Japanese Sweet Potato and California Romesco, while my dining mate ordered their Yuzu Patty which was served with Daikon Radish, Avocado, and Asian Pears. For our entrées, I ordered their Dutch Oven Pork Shoulder and Creamy Beans served with Pico de Gallo and Avocado Gallo, while my dining mate ordered their Wood Charred Cauliflower and Chermoula served with Black Butte Chickpea and Black Sesame Puree. And for our dessert course, I ordered their Apple Mint Crisp topped with whipped coconut and my dining mate ordered their Dark Chocolate Pot de Créme topped with salty whipped creme. To pair with our meals I ordered a glass of their 2020 Chateau de Javernand "Les Gatilles" which is a gamay wine from Beaujolais Cru from Chiroubles, France and my dining mate ordered their 2018 Tenuta Ponte 'Carazita', which is an Aglianico blend from Irpinia DOC in Campania, Italy. The wines paired perfectly with our entrees, as the highlights of our meal were their first course appetizers as they highlighted the freshness of the ingredients that would compose our meal. Both of our main courses turned out to be disappointments as my Pork Shoulder was basically a build your own soft taco dish as it came with two tortillas to assemble your meal, but when served lukewarm at best, this meal came across as totally unimaginative. My friend's cauliflower was slightly better, but with a large floret cut into halves, we felt it too wasn't worth the regular thirty dollar price point. Our desserts too were rather ordinary as my Apple Crisp was nothing more than a granola mix with whipped creme and not what we imagined what an Apple Crisp would actually be. Our total bill was over 151 dollars which would not have been that affordable without the San Francisco Restaurant Week deal. The atmosphere and service is what shined through on our visit to Camino Alto as they do bring healthy and hearty dishes to the table, while promoting a friendly convivial atmosphere, so you can at least feel good about dining out in this trendy neighborhood. With the success vibe that Camino Alto is giving off, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and for that we can all be grateful.

Yelp
It was so refreshing to have my pick of anything on the menu! I had a yummy turmeric drink that tasted divine and the egg tacos which were also perfectly prepared. My friend had the masa waffles, which I guess was the better dish; however, it was a difficult comparison (apples and oranges).. You place your order and sit down with a number. We went on a Saturday around 10;30 and it was easy to find a table.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday for lunch today! I got the pork belly, blueberry masa waffle, and chia pudding. My friend got the salmon. Service was fine - you order at the cashier in the back and they'll bring your food to you afterward when you sit down. The people working here seem quite nice and were very friendly as well. My review is mostly for the food, which is unfortunately below mediocre. We were all shocked because the reviews here are generally good. I'm guessing the dinner is great but definitely not the brunch. Starting with the pork belly dish - the skin was not just crispy, it was basically absolutely hard and wouldn't even cut with the sharp knife they gave me without really stabbing into it with a lot of back and forth and force. Everything about the dish was bland and had no flavor. The pork was simultaneously too wet and too dry. The skin was too hard to chew and the meat at the bottom was somewhat slimy and chewy. The eggs were the best part of the dish because they were at least perfect poached eggs, but there was a strong absence of any seasoning or even salt altogether. There was a layer of Mexican polenta at the bottom which also was completely unseasoned. Next, the waffles. These were the hardest, driest waffles I have ever had in my entire life. It came pre-soaked in syrup and yet somehow was still really crunchy and hard to eat. I also had to stab my knife into this one to cut it. One of my friends cut into the waffle with her fork and it shot out from the plate because it was so tough and hard!! Imagine the texture of the outside of a sourdough bread - but the whole waffle is this texture. I had to keep drinking water to make it go down my throat. Flavor is okay. Blueberry was nice but definitely not what I'd expect. The chia pudding was the best dish of the three here and the only non-dry one! If I had to come back here I would only get the chia pudding (but I wouldn't say it's worth $13 for the amount you get). It's hard to mess up chia pudding - it was pleasantly sweet and the fruit was okay, not particularly juicy or sweet or fresh-tasting but just okay. For the salmon, my friend said it was very dry as well. We were all chugging water non-stop lol. The vibes are great here and I'd probably maybe just drink wine here but the food is just unfortunately not good. The 8 of us had gotten the pork belly and it was a unanimous decision that the food was just not good. We wouldn't come again for brunch, but I'd maybe reconsider for just wine.

KJ T.

Yelp
I've eaten here multiple times for brunch and once for dinner, so I decided to go again for dinner as my last experience was great as they accommodated 1/2 portion sizes for appetizers for a solo diner. This time was different. Previously, I ordered the two 1/2 apps and no entree, but this time, I needed to order an entree to get the 1/2 orders. When the server walked over to Josh Copeland (the owner) to ask if I could, she had this answer from him: "It's been this way for awhile, we know it's more economical to the solo diner if they order the 1/2 app with an entree." Um, no, that's a lie, Mr. Copeland. Because when you do the actual math on the diner's side, it is not more economical; in fact, it is pricier. It's economical for you, but not for me. So I decided to leave. It's not worth me ever coming back to a place that is not welcoming to solo diners, especially after, when I tried making a Valentine's day dinner solo date, I was told "What happened?" as if to imply I should have a date on Valentine's day. And I've also seen him make fun of people at the register when they're ordering or the time he asked for a group of girls' phone numbers even though he's married. Yes, Josh, people are watching and hearing you. You better check yourself.

Yelp
TLDR: Where has this been and why haven't I been here sooner?? Came here on a dreary Sunday after a yoga class and this was the absolute perfect group brunch spot. The food was so delicious, and the VIBE was just so so cute. On a sunny day I can only imagine how amazing this place becomes! ------ FOOD: 1) [MUST TRY] The Ritual with Salmon (5/5): One of the BEST restaurant salads I've had in a while. It made me sit back in my chair and say wow. I think it was the lemon aioli that sealed the deal, but this SALMON was melt-in-your-mouth perfection. I eat salmon from different places almost every day so when I say this salmon was good, it was GOOD. This salad has crisp, juicy asian pear, sweet plums, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and radishes on a bed of little gem lettuce. 2) Granola (4.5/5): A really incredibly delicious granola. A huge serving in my opinion, that had the perfect hints of sweetness from the honey, raisins, and various fruits. There were just so many interesting toppings in addition to the granola -- I think this is how you do granola right. Not a 5/5 for me because the granola didn't taste completely crispy and crunchy like it was freshly baked, but with everything else combined, this was still amazing. 3) Blueberry Masa Waffle (4/5): A very sweet blueberry waffle but with a twist. Masa is a corn/maize dough, so it gives these waffles a graininess that I thought was texturally interesting but probably unnecessary and just unexpected for most people who think they're getting normal blueberry waffles. Still, the delicious syrup and whip on top plus the fresh berries, it's hard not to still love this. 4) We also ordered the chia pudding, a taco plate, and the king salmon & broccolini dishes, but I didn't personally try them so I can't review them as extensively! 5) Drinks: this place is also a little coffee shop where they make the cutest little coffees and drinks for you too! ------ SERVICE: * You actually order at the cash register, take a numbered sign to your table, and then they'll bring the food to you. Not your typical service structure, and I actually really liked it this way * Just know this isn't a place where someone will come around to refill your water or anything * Everyone was nice inside ------ ENVIRONMENT: * SO cute inside. There is a typical dining room right when you enter, but there's also a really cool back room that lets in a ton of natural light from the transparent roof covering. * This would be the perfect place to host a larger party of people -- just call ahead and make a reservation. I would totally host a birthday or other event here.

Yelp
Amazing date night spot or nice dinner with loved ones! This place is pretty unique because they change their menu pretty often and hand-write it each night. It adds to the charm of this place. We started off with the pork belly in the chili-tangerine reduction sauce. This was probably my favorite, since it was so flavorful and the meat just fell apart. It also came with a side that was similar to french fries, but more of a crunchy texture? I believe the waiter said it was a type of root vegetable that I hadn't heard of, but it was very unique and went well with the meat. We also got the king salmon with salsa verde. The salmon was cooked well, but this dish didn't stand out to me in particular. Next we got the halibut with crispy rice and chili ginger coconut sauce. While I'm not the biggest fan of coconut, this dish was still quite tasty. I liked the fish and the texture of the crispy rice. If you like coconut you'll love this! Overall, was a good spot for dinner. The servers were nice enough (though not the most attentive), and the dishes were super unique which is hard especially in SF. 4/5

Yelp
Restaurant week review: The dishes sounded great on paper but didn't turn out the way I expected. The sweet potato was great, but I had freshly roasted sweet potato from Hmart the day before which was triple the quantity and a third the price, and tasted just as good. The pork shoulder tacos were alright but there should've been more salsa and avocado, and I couldn't justify the cost when I can get something even better and more tailored to my tastebuds from Chipotle for less than half the price. The dessert tasted somewhat like yogurt with granola and sauteed apples.

Yelp
Wonderful place for a casual dinner! We were pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous atrium dining area in the back of the restaurant, after passing the dining tables in the front where the primary dining room, which had a cozy feel. They are quite busy, even on a week night (we visited on a Wednesday without reservations) & I would recommend reservations. We started with cocktails (I had a strawberry spritz) & for what my friend had. For starters, we shared the burrata salad which was fantastic & featured stone fruit, tomatoes, hazelnuts & was accompanied with warm bread. We shared two entrees: halibut nicoise & the pork shoulder. Both were delicious but I generally prefer lighter food so the halibut was my favorite. The pork shoulder had a lot of flavor but it is a bit heavier & we couldn't finish it. We had to save room for dessert! We shared the chocolate pot du creme which was perfect, not too sweet. Service was warm & helpful. I would definitely return.

Yelp
I googled nearby restaurants from our hotel and after reading the excellent reviews and seeing the menu, I was very intrigued. Expectations were exceeded and my kids and I had an extraordinary meal and dining experience! The food was exquisite- the dishes each so unique with so much care and effort put into every detail. Although certain ingredients were out of the range of what my (college age) kids might normally order, they thoroughly enjoyed every bite. My daughter even commented while eating that she loves trying new things:) The entire staff was super friendly and sincere including the owner who stopped by our table to chat with us. Finally, the ambiance and attention to details of what makes people comfortable while dining were perfect. Can't wait for our next trip to SF so we can have another amazing dinner at Camino Alto. Grazie mille!

Yelp
Very disappointed in our meal! Our waiter made us feel like we were an inconvenience and was already in a sour mood & quite rude from the start (even though it was a Saturday at 7PM). The appetizers were fresh however the mains were shockingly bad. The halibut served with beans were incredibly bland. The small portion of steak was also flavorless and served with an egg. The three of us were extremely underwhelmed and surprised since the reviewers for this place were good. Ambiance was cold and quiet in the back room (we had a reservation). Overall, bland, tiring, and a cold environment (literally and figuratively). Way too expensive for the lack of creativity, presentation and thoughtfulness of the food as well. Tips for the restaurant - I would have a conversation with your male waiter and also rethink flavors and value on the menu. My father thinks it may have been an "off night" and it's a shame as he was visiting and it was supposed to be a special and memorable occasion (he was meeting my long-term partner here as well). He is a very kind man and I didn't appreciate the lack of kindness or the portrayal of attitude from our waiter. Unfortunately, we are not coming back nor will we recommend this place to the presidio heights community or beyond. I am the type of person that thinks & loudly says that you cannot have a bad meal in San Francisco, especially past a higher price point. However this experience made me rethink this perspective! (PS service staff was incredibly kind however I am talking about our actual waiter).

Yelp
Brunch and dinner are both so good here! You can't go wrong. The service is friendly and professional. The dinner vibes are ideal with good lighting and music. The brunch is order at the counter and sit whenever you want which is more casual, they have a great back patio. We had iced lattes with homemade hazelnut milk- sooo good. All of the food is so fresh, I always recommend this place to people and everyone loves it.

Yelp
Camino Alto easily has easily become one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. It has a small, unassuming storefront from the street, and once you enter, you'll further discover how much thought, design, and care went into this place. The moody, cozy atmosphere can't be beat, especially on a rainy evening on the "secret garden" patio. The staff are warm and friendly. This past visit, the pork shoulder and Japanese pumpkin were our two favorite dishes out of the bunch. We especially loved the hot sauce that came with the pork. The ceviche was flavorful and delicious, and I would have loved the tortillas to be less wet and more crispy. For dessert, it was recommended we try pots de crème and oh, my, goodness, what a treat. It was so decadent. We talked about it for the next 24 hours. The whole experience that is Camino Alto is worth checking out. We can tell that every detail and corner of the restaurant was thoughtfully crafted. I very much look forward to dining with them for brunch one of these days.

Yelp
The outdoor patio is such a vibe. It's really beautiful and well lit while still being really intimate and open. I came here for a friends birthday and we had a party of 8, we made reservations beforehand which I recommend doing. The service was great, they are super accommodating and fun to talk to! We ordered a bunch of different things but I think the chicken and the burrata dish stood out the most. The chicken was insanely huge, I've never seen a piece of chicken that big. It was really well-cooked and juicy. The burrata with the figs and peaches with the greens and sauces was the best starter. We also got the salmon dish, the steak dish, and some potatoes. The food all came in a really timely manner and they do a really great job of timing the dishes when bringing them out. I would definitely come back here again!

Yelp
The care and intention behind the food shines through--from the perfectly cooked grass-finished** ribeye to the unreal Japanese sweet potatoes (truly the best I've ever had). It's rare to find a restaurant these days that prioritizes quality sourcing and flavor without compromise. Camino Alto is a gem--thoughtful, nourishing, and elevated. The service was also incredible. The owner personally came over to check on us and made adjustments for my abundance of allergies, which I deeply appreciated

Yelp
We came to celebrate my dad's birthday and had a great meal! Food: we shared a few appetizers (ceviche, burrata, and glassy potatoes), entrees (halibut, king salmon, flank steak), and the crème brûlée with strawberry compote. I would absolutely recommend the burrata and glassy potatoes as appetizers. The burrata came with delicious grilled peaches, figs, arugula, toast, and a balsamic dressing. The glassy potatoes were incredibly crispy and came with a delicious pepper sauce. For entrees, I'd recommend the halibut and salmon. My mom ordered the halibut and she's quite picky when it comes to the fish. But after taking one bite she told me that the halibut was cooked perfectly. I have literally never heard her say those words before. The crime brûlée was the perfect dessert to finish on. Not too sweet and the perfect texture! They were nice enough to give us the crème brûlée for free in honor of my dad's birthday Service: friendly and attentive! everyone who talked to us, cleared our dishes, and/or filled our water were so kind and helpful Ambiance: moody and cool! I really enjoyed the decor and the overall vibe although it was a little noisy. Although it was really dim as the night went on so I wouldn't blame you if you needed your phone light to look at the menu or what you're eating. Overall, this is a great place for a special occasion!

Yelp
For the love of God and all things good, avoid this restaurant at all costs!!! Listen, I love food. I never complain about what I'm eating, whether it's McDonald's or Nobu. This stuff is straight up booty. I'm sorry. Our food came cold, the vegetables tasted like they had been sautéed in a lukewarm pan for a few minutes with too much oil, and it was covered in pomegranate seeds?? It also lacked salt and other pleasant flavors in general. This is the Bay. We all get behind paying way too much for very mediocre food and pretending like it's good. I do it too. But this restaurant is where I draw the line. I'm 100000% convinced anyone who claims to like this place has never actually ordered food from it OR is lying to themselves because the food feels healthy. The owner will probably fight with me over this comment over his fresh ingredients or whatever but girl if you just want a decent meal keep walking down Union!!! This is the only restaurant I've ever felt this way about, just had to share this warning

Yelp
Food - Everything was delicious, we did family style to share so we can try more items. Service - Fast and great! - Waiter switched out our appetizer plates for our dinner items. Ambiance - Dark, romantic, cute date place. - A bit too dark to see the menu so we had to use our phone flash light to see.

Yelp
this is one of the best place in San Francisco to go for anybody that's concerned about gluten but more so they just want some great innovative food or amazing spot. During the day low-key casual environment but at night they bring it out beautiful well-made dinner service really innovative, design business great food, don't miss this place

Yelp
Lovely place for dinner. My favorite dish of the night was definitely the Yellowfin Tuna Ceviche. Loved the chips it came with -- they were so warm and soft. You could tell they were fresh out of the fryer. The crispy rice in the Rockfish entree was also super good and unique! Added great texture to the overall dish. The restaurant is much bigger than expected. We were seated in the back patio, which was cute, cozy, and surprisingly warm. It was a bit loud, but nothing too crazy :-) Service was cool, nothing to write home about, but there was a slight mishap with our bill at the end of our dinner.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Perfect for an intimate dinner/date night or fancy dinner with a close group of friends. The space is modern, cozy, and very intimate. Their menu changes but there's an option for everyone. I got the ribeye and halibut and Japanese sweet potato. The Japanese sweet potato is the perfect appetizer. The sweet potato was sweet, creamy, and the sauce was light. My boyfriend said that steak was delicious and the potatoes were so crispy. The serving size is very generous, so even if you ordered two appetizers and shared an entree, you'd be satisfied. The halibut was very moist and the green sauce provided the right along of tang and acidity the dish needed. The fish was flakey and the creamy beans were divine. The staff were very attentive and can recommend pairings with your food if you're interested. The space is quite small though, so I recommend making a reservation.

Yelp
My bf and I were super excited to try this place! We love a good wine bar with great food . Food and wine were both really good! We came this past Saturday night and had a reservation. Our only issue was our server was pushing us to order. It felt so rushed . Within 5 minutes of sitting down she asked if we're ready for food. She kept checking back every few minutes and then when we were ready to put in an app she said all the food had to be put in together. Which is fine , but maybe let us when you kept checking on us. We wanted to enjoy our date night I've never had a server push to order and get out of there . Super weird . The other server working looked like a manager and he was way more relaxed with his tables. We were finished with our meal before any other his tables . We enjoyed the food and vibe just a bummer we felt pushed out the whole time

Yelp
I love when restaurants focus on serving up an all-around excellent experience! This place does all the things so well - Great food, wines, ambiance, and service. Their food was incredible. The roasted pork shoulder was excellent. Hearty portions all around. Loved the blue corn tortillas served on the side. Black beans were beautifully sized and really tasty. The ribeye + roasted baby potatoes and broccolini all had incredible flavor profiles. Everything on the dessert menu sounded good to us. We ended up going with the rubarab crisp because I have been dying for something rhubarb since last spring. Mirroring the entrees, the dessert was perfect. Loved the whipped coconut topping. The only thing we didn't care for here was our usual after-dessert espresso. It was extremely acidic and tangy. They have a nice espresso machine, so I'm not sure what went awry. We had enough wine by that point though that we just drank it anyway and went about our merry way. Overall, I really think this is the most perfect date night spot. We left feeling full and incredibly happy.
