The 38 Essential Mexico City Restaurants

"Chinese Mexican cuisine in Baja California dates back to the mid-1800s, when immigrants from China arrived to work in farming and railroad construction. Eventually, Mexican and Chinese food cultures mingled in cafes, dive bars, and restaurants to create a local fusion cuisine. To taste a piece of that culinary history, head to Canton Mexicali. The restaurant is a bit cramped and dimly lit in red and yellow hues, but it feels like the perfect setting for the wide array of dishes like pork wontons; green fried rice mixed with green beans, green fava beans, and chickpeas; dan dan peanut noodles; and chile relleno with garlic and ginger. Don’t forget to order the carne Mexicali and chile shrimp, house specialties. Dishes are meant to be shared family style, ideally with a round or two of house cocktails or wine. Since opening, Canton Mexicali has become the popular kid on the block, so reservations are strongly recommended. The restaurant closes at 1 a.m., making it a strong contender for late-night dinners." - Natalia de la Rosa, Daniela Galarza

The Best Restaurants In Roma, Mexico City 2024

"Canton Mexicali looks like a pretty straightforward Chinese restaurant. And that’s because up until a few years ago, it was. New owners have kept the very mid-’90s feel, but now serves Mexicali-style Chinese food to cool kids and a few loyal holdovers. The camarones chipotle (fried shrimp in a sweet and sour chipotle salsa) are an essential order, and the perfect introduction to what’s happening here. Add the spicy cucumber salad, dan dan noodles, and a round of Tsingtaos for the full experience." - guillaume guevara

This place is way overrated & overpriced period! The food was very mediocre and the price & portion is outrageous! The main course dishes (Mexicali beef & Kung Pao chicken don’t come with a steamed rice), one bowl of steamed rice cost 90 pesos? More than what US would charge!!! The beef is okay and the kung pao chicken barely to find much any chicken in it. Full of stir fry veggies. The chicken chow mein just noodle with a piece of egg on top, with a few chicken!!! The noodles was quite salty! The fried rice is the worst in my opinion, it said Chinese pork sausage and shrimps, where are the meats? There are micro meats pieces in it, the fried rice is very low quality!!! I will never ever recommend anyone to go there! Huge mistake, read from an article mentioning this place, must be a paid article!! Downstairs was very loud with an obnoxious child playing with a spoon on a plate from an improper parent’s behavior and it was cold & noisy (bad acoustics), we asked to move to a second floor which is much better! All the portions are super tiny!! Bad quality food! My sister is from Hong Kong, she would walk out of this place for sure, she could cook so much better!! Don’t be fooled with the pictures, because the plates were super small, just look at the fork next to it! All the drinks are way overpriced!!

Amazing flavors even though the portions are smaller. I ordered enough for two and had leftovers. Service was attentive and fantastic! Will come again next time I’m back in CDMX! Came on a Friday right at opening with no wait.

this is my second time here & the food was great as usual. i will say that for those used to typical cantonese food, the dishes here are fried more than usual as it’s meant to be chinese-mexican fusion, so i wouldn’t come here expecting typical chinese dishes. that said, the mix of flavors were great! i highly recommend coming here with more people so you can eat family style & try multiple dishes :)

Came for a late night dinner and wow so so good everything was delicious. Probably the best fried rice I’ve had. The staff was very kind. 10/10!

Never expected Mexican Chinese cuisine to go so hard. The use of Chilis was really incredible. The service was absurdly fast and the guy at the wok was absolutely slamming orders. In, ordered, ate, and out in 35 minutes flat (our choice we weren't rushed)

The food here was abysmal and way, way overpriced for such small portions. I was excited for some exciting fusion that blends the best of Mexican and Chinese cuisines but instead got soulless, unexciting, poorly made dishes. Our bill for two people ended up being ~$1200MXN (including two cocktails) which is almost $100CAD. I honestly felt a bit scammed. Mexicali beef (3/10). The flavours were ok but the beef was fried to death, so dry and stringy that it had the texture of freeze-dried meat. Verde Fried Rice (5/10). I’ve never in my life been served such a small portion of fried rice. It wasn’t even enough to be split between two people. That’s just insulting. Otherwise, there was a decent amount of wok hey and the rice texture was nice. Too much going on though and kinda tasted like the fried rice I make when trying to use up leftover scraps in my fridge. Chile Relleno (4/10). Pork filling texture was unpleasant. Not springy like a good chinese dumpling pork filling should be, but mushy and paste-like. Carrot Cake (6/10). Cake itself was good, nice and moist. Served with ice cream and a non-cream cheese frosting which pushed everything over the edge into way too sweet territory. Turns out, carrot cake really needs cream cheese frosting for balance. Served with spiced nuts that were pretty good but too salty for a dessert.

This place was amazing. We had the best food and service. The fried rice, dumplings and carrot cake were top notch. Luis brought the charm. Don’t miss this place.

10/10 would come again! The food here delivers delicious Chinese food, with a Mexican twist. Reese was a great server and explained everything so well!!
