"I’ve been behind on my reading so I wanted to take myself out to a no-distractions solo dinner to finish my latest book. I decided to sit at the bar of the Carpenter Hotel restaurant. The meal was lovely: the bright peach and tomato salad fulfilled my greatest fruit desires; the Gulf fish was plump and paired well with the crispy rice; the carrot cake was not made with any raisins thankfully; and the wine recommendations from the bartender were on-point. "The Carpenter is a Bunkhouse project taking up residence in a new concrete structure plus a 1948 meeting hall that’s adjacent to a pecan grove touching Zilker Park. Rooms are purposely spare, if a bit stark, with concrete walls, platform beds, vintage bedside sconces, and interesting furniture (stools made in Mexico, rugs and leather chairs made in Austin). Every room has a balcony; book on the west side of the property for views over a trailer park and into the pecan trees—it's a very Austin panorama.
