11 Best NYC Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"Chef Ivy Stark, formerly of Dos Caminos, opened this Mexican-inspired spot in Nolita this April. Five different margaritas, including the signature Purple Cadillica, which can be made with Cazadores Reposado, accompany other tequila-based cocktails like the La Suprema (tequila blanco, ginger, and lime) and the Mamacita (tequila reposado, orgeat, pomegranate, lime, and egg white). Stark’s food menu offers a variety of tacos, ceviches, and larger dishes like enchiladas and grilled shrimp with chorizo saffron rice. The plant-and-art-filled decor is by Stephanie Vezina and lends a festive vibe to the long and narrow space." - Vox Creative

Casa Bocado Review - Little Italy - New York - The Infatuation

"Casa Bocado is a Mexican restaurant on Bowery with lots of plants, windows, and big leather booths. It looks like something you’d find in the Meatpacking District or in the bottom of a somewhat trendy hotel where business travelers might stay if the Marriott were sold out. The menu consists of things like enchiladas, a few different ceviches, and queso fundido, and everything is both decent and pricey. You can get three carnitas tacos for $16, for example, and they make for a perfectly fine snack. Split an order with someone, and have a few margaritas at one of the tables outside. That’s the best way to use this place." - Bryan Kim

i came here for a friends birthday she made reservations a day before. compared to other reviews my experience was very different and the opposite. It was a Saturday evening around 6 and it was a very empty place. We had a very friendly server who made sure all was well. The food was good not extremely out of the ordinary. aside from alcoholic beverages they only had an option of grapefruit jarrito however they ran out of that 😅 they still offered us ginger ale though ! We asked if they can make us a little something for her birthday and they served us ice cream with churros. I think it was a great experience!

Came here with friends for dinner before a night out. I was a bit disappointed because the level of noise inside was a bit loud and it was hard to hear people speaking who were only seated across the table. (There was loud music playing, which then led everyone to have to raise their voice). Pros: - Margs are tasty and strong - Cute decor and spacious interior Cons: - Portion sizes of food are small (esp for the price) - Too loud indoors - lots of people inside and there was loud music I also had made a reservation in advance but called to let them know I was going to be late, and could not understand the woman on the phone (due to the background noise on her side of the call). It ended up being ok because the table was still “reserved” just the 1.5 hour limit would start at the reserved time…(but there were also a ton of tables still open so I guess we didn’t really need a reservation..) The food was good (we got the chicken tacos, fish tacos, and quesadilla), but the portion sizes were very much so on the smaller side. If you plan on coming here, expect to grab dinner with a group of friends for casual convos - NOT the place to go if you’re looking for a more intimate date/friend-catch up environment. The interior is beautiful, so it’s a shame the ambiance was not up to par. Maybe it’s quieter if you were to come for lunch during the day…

Atmosphere: indoor looked nice but the weather was nice so we chose outdoor and it was very very noisy. Choose indoor if you go there. We had a big group and it seemed like a good place for a big group. Food: pretty good. I really liked the queso. The quesadilla had so much cheese in it and there was so much ice cream in both dessert. I enjoyed my mango margarita. Service: pretty fast and nice. One of my friend was lactose intolerant and requested to order churros only without ice cream and they did that.

Wow! I just had my birthday party here of 14 people, and everybody raved! We did the pre-fixe menu for $65 a person (not including alcohol). For the money, we got SO much food and it was all delicious. 3 apps and 3 entrees + dessert. The drinks were flowing, strong, and the food was excellent. Especially do not miss the shrimp tacos and carne asada entrees! Everything served was fresh and fabulous. The service was fantastic and they made me feel so special on my birthday! They took such great care of my guests and I. They have great vegetarian options too for people to enjoy. We were not rushed at all and thoroughly were able to enjoy the evening. They even gave me a sparkler, which was so nice of them, and take great group photos! The vibes are also immaculate, especially in the evening! They also have a clubby bar downstairs with a DJ and the upstairs is a bit quieter (yet still lively) for dinner. I highly recommend this place for not only hosting a birthday, but for a nice dinner with friends or a significant other! Also probably great for corporate parties too. Thank you so much, Casa Bocado staff and chef, for making it a birthday to remember! - Sabrina

Google
I loved the vibe of this place; very nice ambience and cool decoration. The food was ok, not mind-blowing. I had the chicken quesadillas. The margarita was tasty, and had a lot of alcohol. The only downsize was the noise; it was too loud inside. Otherwise, nice experience

Google
Their drinks and pumpkin seed hummus with veggies were fantastic! All their plates looked really fresh and colorful as well. The staff was especially accommodating and the outdoor seating on the corner lot was a very nice place to sit!

Google
Set up a wonderful birthday party here. The food was excellent especially the grilled skirt steak and the guacamole . We also had the fish tacos which were fantastic. Looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
Five stars ... just walked in and was seated immediately. The place was not packed. Good music and quick and efficient service. Waiter came over took our drink and food orders and everything came out very fast. Constantly being checked on by all staff which is always great. Food was delicious we had the guacamole , quesadilla and the burrito. Price was on the higher side but we'll worth it. Decor was nice, seats were comfortable, dimmed lights and music made for the perfect combination. Family friendly. Will be back.

Yelp
Overall all the food was flavorful and fresh! The carne asada tacos were delicious. The burrito was also delicious! I only wish that they mentioned on the menu that the street corn was on the cob cause I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew that. The service was good and everyone was attentive. Nice ambiance and a cool spot for dinner or late lunch!

Yelp
Great spot for dinner with friends. Those spicy margarita pitchers are dangerous! Strong and worth every penny. The queso fundido and guac were both excellent. We all got different tacos and loved them all. The spot is busy and the staff was very nice. The food takes quite a while to come out, so I wouldn't come here if you're starving and don't have patience to wait. It is worth the wait, though!

Yelp
My friends and I came here for dinner. It's definitely a really cute environment though their music was a tad too loud. You had to literally be yelling to even somewhat hear the person across from you which got super tiring. It would've been nice to sit outside instead. In terms of the food, we tried the Guacamole and Queso Fundido for the table. Both were yummy! The queso seemed kind of too liquidy at first, but the key was to scoop some up with your fork to really get all of it on the tortilla. For my main, I got the Carne Asada Tacos, which was delicious! The flavor combos were great. I will say this place is definitely pricey and not somewhere that you should drink a lot at like we did lol... Our total bill came out to about $450 for 5 people. We got 3 pitchers which were $68 each. We tried the Spicy Margarita, Mango and Passion Fruit. I really liked the spicy and passionfruit ones. The mango one was really strong tasting and had a lot of pulp at the bottom. Overall, a fun experience and good food despite the loud noise and high prices.

Yelp
I went here this weekend for one of my friends birthday celebrations. We started off with the tableside. Margarita, which was strong and very delicious. A few people at my table didn't like the margarita, but that's because they aren't fans of lime.. I had another drink, I forgot the name but it was there take on a pina colada, it was tasty and fresh..for an appetizer, we had the guacamole. I personally enjoyed the guacamole, it was seasoned just right and very fresh. The pomegranate seeds were definitely not for me, texture wise, but everyone else at the table really enjoyed the guacamole with the pomegranate seeds included. For the main course, I got the Carne Asada tacos. They were delicious, ask the waiter for the table side salsa's to try on your tacos (we used some to finish the chips off from the guac). My favorites were the spicy and the roasted tomato salsa. The music at the restaurant was Latin and Latin trap, and I thoroughly enjoyed that. The staff was very sweet and service was quick. I do think that they are a bit pricey for the size of the portions served, but the food is really good quality.

Yelp
The food is better than most Mexican food I had in Mexico! I got the Chicken Quesadilla ($15), which was nice and cheesy. The shredded chicken inside was definitely better than the typical chunks of chicken, as the shreds are spread evenly and make for a much easier eating experience without things falling out. The Carne Asada Tacos ($18) were delicious and in an authentic Mexican style. The beef was flavorful and tender. I also got a Papito Mojito cocktail ($16), which was refreshingly minty and fruity. The prices were decent given the portion sizes and quality. The interior has unique and modern wooden decor with a lively atmosphere and dimmed lighting. The service speed was quick and our water was friendly and attentive. Overall, Casa Bocado has everything you'd want in a Mexican restaurant: tasty authentic Mexican food, a great selection of drinks, and a fun atmosphere. If you're looking for a Mexican restaurant in NYC, this should be near or at the top of your list!

Yelp
Arrived at 10:45 for food, they close at midnight. Told the kitchen is closed. Unfortunate. If you don't want to honor your post an hours, then post the correct hours.... Close an hour early on a Friday night is ridiculous. That's too bad I was looking forward to it. there's a million choices in this city and they just lost theirs with me.

Yelp
Service was good, food was lukewarm and bland. I feel like a sucker for going into an empty restaurant that looked abandoned from the never-washed windows.

Yelp
5 stars for fantastic food, drinks, and atmosphere! We were a table of 5 and split 3 carafes of skinny, spicy mezcal margaritas, which were excellent and the staff were very accommodating / patient while we decided which to get. For food, we had 2 rounds of guacamole because it was so good! After that, we all got shrimp and fish tacos which were just perfect. Very flavorful and the fish was actually fresh and not that weird, frozen mahi most restaurants serve in their fish tacos. The corn tortillas are house-made and excellent. They clearly put some capital into the interior- it's extremely well done and has a lot of character. They so play all Spanish music in the restaurant which we loved. Absolutely recommend!

Yelp
Margaritas were on point, every dish was excellent, possibly the best queso fundido we've ever had, friendly and attentive service, upscale yet casual vibe. My new favorite Mexican spot in Manhattan. Highly recommend. Will definitely come back soon!
google avatar

Karena W.

Yelp
Will not come back. They added 20% gratuity fee when we only have 3 people and it was not listed on the menu. Usually mandatory gratuity fee is for party of 6, they probably think we are tourist and overcharge us. Their service and food did not worth that 20% fee. No wonder this place is empty on a Friday night. Ripped off.

Yelp
First time at a cozy Mexican restaurant in the Soho area. The outside does look fancy and inviting. We came here for a birthday party of 36 people. My friend booked for a Family Style Pre-Fixed Menu for $65 (alcohol not included). It is difficult to get a restaurant to secure a large party of this scale. We had to be seated at different tables (3 separate ones). Food wise everything was fantastic. What we had was the Shrimp Tacos, Tamales, Pinto Beans Guacamole, Seared Salmon, Churro Ice Cream, and the Chimichurri Steak. My deductions had to go with the portions offered to us. It is difficult to serve a party of 36 people but what I would've liked was to enjoy more heartier portions of the food. The other 2 tables was offered a nice amount of food but our table, at most each diner only had 2 bites to sample from each dish. And for the price we paid, it was hefty to pay over $100 for a small amount of food. It was my friend's birthday so I told myself the contributions was going towards his special day. But as a diner, I was expecting more. Maybe if I came on a small intimate dinner with a few diners, perhaps the portions would be better. Just the pre-fixed menu experience wasn't doing it for me.

Yelp
Great guac and tacos! Got a seat immediately at the bar on a Friday night! Food came out nice and quick too. Was not drinking that evening, but the bar looks like a very nice selection of cocktails and many nice Mezcal selections.

Yelp
Came here today after work because I'm visiting a girlfriend who just moved to Little Italy and we were craving guac and chips. Everyone told us to try this place out so we did and boy did it not disappoint! Carne asada tacos were OMMGGGGGG!!! Order them and thank me later. Especially love the tangy salsa that comes on top. The guac was our appetizer and I loved it because I'm obsessed with everything spicy. It's so cute inside too- very date night esque or would probably do a large group for my birthday in March here too. Seriously, COME.

Yelp
Found Casa Bocado on Yelp while looking for a central dinner spot for some friends that were coming into town. Easily made a reservation on Resy for a weekday around 7:30pm but didn't seem necessary. From beginning to end, had a great experience with food to customer service to ambiance. It's a restaurant that's connected to the sohotel, but still has a separate entrance. The inside is super cute - mid century modern, but colorful feel. Latin music playing but not too loud. Definitely good for a dinner/drinks night with friends. We started off with a round of drinks. While they have a list of specials, including margaritas, I started with a glass of Pinot ($15). We also shared a large portion of chips and guacamole, which came with mild, medium, and spicy salsa. It was delicious. The menu isn't huge but it didn't seem like you could go wrong. I got the chicken tinga tacos ($14) and they were bomb. Corn tortillas with all of the fixings. My friends got the other tacos options on them menu and all seemed to enjoy theirs as well. Service was also fantastic. We never waited too long for drinks or food or just to be checked on. Our server was also just really nice. He even let us split the check four ways. Definitely a good nicer Mexican spot in the lower east side. I'd definitely be down to come back, especially for a margarita. I definitely made a mistake.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Loved the drinks, loved the tacos and quesadilla. Easy to grab a quick bite or a big meal- or even just drinks the mojito was perfect! Great vibez all around.

Jolee S.

Yelp
This place is so pretty! Everything we ate was yummy, and the man who helped us was sooo nice and accommodating! He let me charge my phone lol. The drinks were amazing. Kind of a small menu, but reasonable prices and tasted great.

Yelp
Our first time coming. Came specifically to celebrate my fiancé's birthday and it was so good. The special was the empanadas - they tasted great. The quesadillas had the perfect amount of salsa and the tacos were so good. They were slightly spicy for me but still great. Service here was so good as well - the waiter let us know how great the house tequila actually is and did not try to upsell us.
google avatar

Johanna Q.

Yelp
This place has amazing queso. And amazing service. Also drinks are strong! Highly recommend, especially for larger groups/parties
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good if you're looking for decent Mexican in the area. That being said, there are better places in the city with a similar vibe. We had their guacamole and tacos and felt that they could have used more flavor. The food was very fast and the staff was friendly, I would probably come back just for drinks. One big surprise - their French fries are amazing. They were necessary after the few drinks and totally hit the spot.
google avatar

Dave F.

Yelp
Had my company holiday party here. Was a nice venue for that. There was a nice bar upstairs with lots of seating and food. Downstairs was a dance floor and additional seating and a more limited bar. Food wise: Elote super good. Perfect cheese and salt level. Nice and cirspy The chicken had a great sweet skin. Super juicy The tacos are nice and the sauces were just okay. The roast beef or steak could have been a bit fresher. Beer selection was just okay.
google avatar

Mariam K.

Yelp
Neither the food or the drinks were good. It's that simple. My friend and I stopped by while walking through town to get some apps and drinks. We got beef taquitos, crab app, and squash tacos. I'll say the beef taquito was 'decent' nothing to write home about. Everything else was flavorless and uninteresting. The drinks didn't redeem the meal either. All in all - skip this place and go somewhere else
google avatar

Belle P.

Yelp
Came here for an early dinner and had a great time. The decor is beautiful and the vibe is amazing. It's good for groups but also still intimate enough for a date. We got there after brunch but the crowd was still there and it was pretty dope! They had a dj but it wasn't crazy loud, was still able to have a conversation. We opted to sit indoors but definitely going to try outdoors next time (they have many tables outdoors so that's a plus!) The food was great, we got the hummus app which was delicious and different from what I was expecting. We each got two diff taco dishes, carnitas which was yummy and the carne asada which were super loaded! Like seriously, it could've been enough to make a couple of more tacos. Service was amazing, they checked up on us frequently but it wasn't overbearing in any way. All their attitudes were dope and laid back. Knowing this was a new place we decided to check it out and we were not disappointed! Great service, reasonable prices, and the beautiful decor, will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Tanima M.

Yelp
My new favorite Mexican spot! The dishes here are delicious and if I wasn't stuffed I definitely would've ordered more food. We started off with the guacamole which came with 3 different types of sauces ranging from mild to spicy. We also ordered the fish tacos and carne asada tacos which were both juicy and very filling! They definitely don't skimp on the portions here. The dish I loved most here was the Tampiqueha for Two (skirt steak). The steak was very tender and so good! I highly recommend this dish. Great music and super fun vibe. Can't wait to come back for the live music!
google avatar

Ella B.

Yelp
I'm always down for places that are dog friendly. My friend and I decided to do a spontaneous rosé session and wanted to sit outdoors to enjoy the weather without having people give us crap about our dogs (we had three dogs with us). The food was great, service was fast. My friend forgot to mention that she was vegetarian so they remade her dish and let me have hers (I mean don't abuse the system but I thought that was a nice gesture. Why waste food?). There was definitely a cool vibe going on, considering it's such a new restaurant. The only thing I would note/change is the restroom. It's next to the hostess desk behind the curtains which is impossible to find unless you ask. Maybe a sign would be nice. After many of those jalepeno margaritas, a girls gotta gooooo. Overall, I'll def be spending my summer days there day drinking.

Yelp
Mi Casa es Tu Casa & hopefully Tu Casa es Mi Casa Best Best Best Guacamole & Tacos I have ever eaten. Would like to come back ASAP

Yelp
Came for a second time here and had a great experience with my food , fresh guacamole ( the pomegranate seeds were an amazing addition) Maji maji fish tempura tacos made me satisfied would recommend this restaurant for after work dinner or a nice lunch. Kudos on the service
google avatar

Natasha E.

Yelp
AMAZING service, great atmosphere and delicious food. Trendy. Not too upscale, not too casual. A perfect balance. Great music & ambiance. Our server exceeded our expectations. Best service I have had. Even better than places like vandal, stk, hunt & fish. Server made recommendations, was attentive without being overbearing, didn't rush to bring us a check. Great food portions & flavors. Guac is great. Definitely won me over and will be back

Yelp
After shopping in Soho with some friends we stopped into this New Mexican spot that the concierge at Citizen M Hotel recommended. We were eager to see what the buzz was all about! The ambiance of the restaurant is contagious as soon as you walk through the door. After being greeted immediately by the most friendly staff, with Latin music flowing through the speakers, we wanted to dance our way over to our table. The vibes continued through our meal - we ordered margaritas, appetizers and tacos (chicken and steak)! Everything was divine! Highly recommend! This is definitely going to be my go to Mexican spot - finally a great New Mexican restaurant in the city.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot, whether you sit inside or outside but one piece of advice do not take the table right next to the kitchen door..you won't be able to concentrate on the great food and atmosphere. Actually a quick trip to Home Depot for some 2x4 and sheet rock Can fix that issue . But the food, decor, service was superb! The hosts were very welcoming and all the drinks were special. I'll be back!
google avatar

Nicky Z.

Yelp
The food was unreal. I still regret not being able to finish my plate of birria tacos. Need to go back asap!

Leila F.

Yelp
Food, atmosphere, and service was amazing. I got the carne asada tacos and the Mexican street corn.
google avatar

Eamon B.

Yelp
This summer, comes a restaurant bigger and badder than anything you've seen before. Where the tequila flows like the Nile and the chicken spice kicks harder than Jet Li. Where the staff is family and the bathroom is literally behind a curtain at the front, walk in with the expectation of greatness and walk out feeling disappointed in yourself for having such low standards walking in. This. Is. Casa. B

Yelp
Nice classy establishment with great food, drinks, and general ambiance. Great for a date or food/drinks with friends. I recently stumbled across this place and was pleasantly surprised. Coming from California, I'm always suspicious of Mexican food outside of California and Mexico but this place really impressed me. I had the short rib taquitos and pepito, which was a unique vegan dish consisting of toasted pumpkin seed; it was nice to be able to have tasty vegan options to share with my brother who is vegan. The staff was very friendly and had really good attitudes and the overall ambiance was great. The inside is hip and has a nice modern design. I'm looking forward to returning one day to try the rest of the food and cocktails.

Yelp
Came here for brunch with some friends on sunday. We had such a good experience. The restaurant is connected to the SoHotel. The atmosphere is warm with twinkly lights and flags on the ceiling. We decided to do the 90 min bottomless brunch. Cesar was our server and he was AWESOME! He told us he'd get our first pitcher before starting the 90 min. The mimosas have delicious fresh oj. We ordered guacamole to start. It was very fresh with pomegranate seeds in the dip which was amazinG. I got the avocado pan tostada which had fresh radish on it and it was delicious. My friend got the pancakes with carmalized apples and syrup, she said they were fluffy and warm with the syrup and whipped cream as the perfect finishing touches. My other friend got the huevos rancheros which was delicious. Our brunch end end up passing more than 90min and we all had a great time. I loved the reggatone music, it really got the vibes going. Ask for Cesar when you come!

Yelp
Great happy hour margaritas if you're in the neighborhood. The service is impeccable and they will go out of their way to make sure you feel welcomed. If you're worried about going out during COVID19, don't worry. They will wash their hands right in front of you. Highly recommend the purple Cadillac and strawberry margarita.

Alexis H.

Yelp
Great ambiance, friendly staff and AMAZING food! We got the carne asada tacos, the shrimp tacos, and the chicken quesadillas and they were all. Amazing. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Soojin S.

Yelp
My dood and I come here regularly for the chips and guac, but mostly because we dream about the tacos, especially the carnitas asada. I love it in the summer sitting outside, people watching for Paul Rudd undercover - the area is pretty trendy edgy and music is great but not too loud. Now that it's colder we sat inside and realized the atmosphere is just as relaxed trendy feeling. Helps me to feel elegant as I hoover my foods mercilessly. Best spicy margs I've had in the city. Waitstaff is professional, personal, and on point with the suggestions and pace. Please don't come, lol. I want this place to stay accessible not impossible to nab an impromptu table.

Yelp
I am impressed, Casa Bocado was simply remarkable. They are more affordable than the competition. Everything tasted fresh and was very good! Service is wonderful and team very friendly. Sometimes things are just done right.

Yelp
As a resident of San Diego, CA I confirm the guacamole here is as real and delicious as it gets. You will also be tempted to hide a few chips in a baggie for later. The food was authentic, fresh and full of flavor. The atmosphere was colorful and upbeat with spacious nice outdoor seating. The management and staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. Never waited to order a drink and also never felt rushed to leave as my friend and I were catching up after not seeing each other for a year. Perfect spot for any occasion.

Carolina M.

Yelp
Honestly this place was super great!!! I got the tempura battered fish tacos and I loved them they were amazingggg, I even wished they had more fish in them to get some more goodness! The spicy marg was also fantastic, definitely the best spicy marg I've had recently and I have to say this might be my new favorite spot to get them! The drink wasn't spicy in an overwhelming way where your mouth catches on fire but spicy in a subdued smoky, perfectly blended kinda way and the strength of the drink was perfect!!! You could tell it was strong but it didn't taste like you were just drinking straight up liquor, having a much better perfectly balanced taste between the marg flavor and the alcohol instead, and it went down super smooth!! When I tell you this drink was mixed so well I mean it, I was super impressed, and I got mine with the mezcal preparation (they asked if I wanted tequila or mezcal) and it was sooo good!!! I highly recommend mezcal in the margs for a smokier taste. Overall highly recommend this place!! Food was great, drinks were amazing and the decor/ambiance/servers were all fantastic!!! 10/10.

Yelp
We went for my friends birthday with 12 people and ended up paying $1,500 for some bum ass food. No cap. We ordered 24 shots of tequila and they watered them down. On baby. Then they were charging $65 for 1 tequila pitcher. And the food wasn't hitting. And they forced us to have the set menu at $65 I wasn't ever hungry. Smh. Damn shame
google avatar

Natalie C.

Yelp
Amazing tacos and guacamole!! The staff is very nice and attentive, and the tacos are delicious. Good portions for the price point, I definitely feel like I got my money's worth. The addition of pomegranate seeds on the guacamole was incredible, it's a must try if you go here.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of cocktail bars and didn't even know this place existed. I stopped by on Saturday after work and had to try this new place. I had the watermelon margarita and the fish tacos which came highly recommend; and I'll definitely be back for a full meal and when I have chance and will try one of their many mezcals.

Yelp
Right around the corner from my husbands office. Came to try and it was not great. The steak was okay. But everything else we got was disappointing.

Yelp
WHAT is this item! Instead of having my paper check given to me like a normal restaurant I got this ODD item. Honeslty I was pretty disappointed with this place to start when we told them it was my girlfriends birthday and they said they would bring her something and never did. She deserves to be celebrated! Sad :( place was fine though - not dying to come back

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place looking for a place to drink. The bar and overall decor of this place is really nice. I had the mango margarita, which had a nice mango flavor and a little kick. I guess the tequila is jalapeno infused. It was actually a really good flavor combo. The bartender recommended the carne asada tacos and they were surprisingly tasty. They seem to marinate the steak so the flavor is really good and the meat is tender. Will have to come again for a happy hour or to try their dinner.

Crazy good shrimp dish! Ana provided great service. Highlight of our trip to NYC! Much appreciated!
