I've been to Casa Colima several times over the past several years. The atmosphere is very fun, and the staff has always been very nice, which makes up for the fact that the quality of food is not particularly good. However, the last time I went, I ordered the veggie burrito from the vegetarian menu - I am vegetarian - and the server asked if I wanted to remove the rice, because it has chicken broth in it. I’ve never been told that before by other servers when I’ve ordered it.
I’m not 100% sure that it was the previous servers who did not know that it had chicken in it, or if it was that particular server who is wrong that it does have chicken in in. (It’s fairly common for Mexican restaurant to put animal fat in their rice and beans.) So I flagged down the manager. Instead of checking in with the kitchen, he just asked our server about it in Spanish, and got the same answer from the server as we did (unsurprisingly). He didn’t even bother coming back to us to help straighten things out. On their website they have a contact form, and I’ve sent two inquiries to them, and they have not responded in weeks.
If they’ve been serving a product with chicken in it for years on their vegetarian menu, that is *very very bad*, not just for vegetarians but for those with allergies. And it is also very very bad if the manager doesn’t know what’s in the food and doesn’t check, and it’s very bad if the servers (either that day’s server, or the past ones) also don’t know. And it is bad if they have a contact form on their website but don’t respond to those who send messages with it.
I will never go there again, and I encourage others to think twice about any place that can’t tell you what’s in the food they serve.
