The Best Restaurants in Newark, New Jersey | Eater NY

"If you worship all things porcine, then Caseiro e Bom is a must-stop. What looks like an unassuming but well-stocked bodega when you walk in is actually the butcher shop of Rodrigo Duarte. For years, Duarte worked to bring Pata Negra pigs to New Jersey from Portugal to raise them and make a true-to-tradition local version of Iberico ham, a style renowned for its distinct flavor derived from the pig’s specific diet, breeding, and curing. This is a great stop for beautiful, locally raised, fresh and cured meats." - Hank Zona

Caseiro e Bom in Newark Sells Some of the Country’s Most Luxurious Hams - Eater NY

"Opened in 2006 by Don Rodrigo Duarte in Newark's Ironbound neighborhood, Caseiro e Bom Gourmet House is a specialty market offering a wide range of Portuguese meats and products. The shop is particularly known for its authentic Iberico pork, which Duarte was among the first to raise and breed in the U.S. The store has become a hub for the local Portuguese community, offering traditional products like Iberico presa, secretos, sarrabulho, and leitão da bairrada, as well as cured meats and sausages. Duarte's meats are antibiotic-free, corn-free, and pasture-raised, adhering to traditional Portuguese curing techniques. The shop has gained a reputation across New Jersey and nationwide, with products featured in establishments such as Portugalia Marketplace in Massachusetts and Central Market in Texas." - Nicholas Hernandez

Google
Absolutely a wonderful hidden gem. The quality is outstanding. If you're on the tall side watch your head, you will bump your head into meats

Google
Went there a week ago after I found it online. It is a legit butcher. How can I order a fresh suckling pig to pickup before Easter if I done speak Portuguese?

Goran Jovanovic

Google
We found this place by searching online for a place that sells roasted young pigs and is open on Thanksgiving Day. We placed the order a few days before by calling the shop, and our roasted-to-perfection 18-lb piglet was ready for pickup at the agreed-upon time. The service and the roast were outstanding, and we are already looking for another family gathering so we can place the same order. The price was slightly over $200, but we fed twelve people and still had a leftover, and we considered it a good deal.

Google
Definitely the best butcher in the Ironbound, probably best in Newark, possibly best in Northern NJ and MAYBE best in all of NJ? This guys wins nationwide charcuterie competitions with his house-cured meats. He breeds and raises his own pigs for crying out loud! I bought 2 pork tenderloins the other day and they were the most tender I've probably every had. I'm telling you If this shop was in Brooklyn, there would be lines out the door every day.

Google
Went there to get Ibérico Pork. Good selection. Also lots of ethnic. Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian.

Jane Eliya

Google
The very best meat you can ever get!! Everyone loves my BBQs cause we get the meat from here. My friends say when they go to Brazilian restaurants, the meat isn’t even as good as this meat is. He Raises his own cattle and pigs. Everything is worth every penny!! Delicious!

Google
Nice place, meats hanging from the ceiling all over. I bought a whole ham leg. They let you sample various sausages. Price is fair for the good quality. Good chorizo and morcilla and produce as well.

Google
Foodies beware, take a breath, this place is unbelievable, a butcher shop like no other, it helps if you can speak a little Portuguese. The most expensive ham in the world, Jamon Iberico, is on display, along with a colorful variety of artisanal sausages. Yes the merchandise may be kind of pricey but of course there is no charge to visit so think of it like visiting a museum. The staff is certainly welcoming. You might learn something here, and you might receive a free sample or two. Very clean place. Note the fresh eggs sold by the dozen, and I mean fresh, not refrigerated, not washed, real chicken eggs straight from the farm that were just, excuse me, ovulated. (Ew.) And the fresh bread! The select Portuguese cheeses in stock are otherwise pretty hard to procure. This is a classic, old-school, mom-and-pop retail food establishment with an exceptional variety of goods. A dying breed. Walking through their door is like stepping back to a time before food was as industrial and processed as now. Definitely worth going out of your way to visit; this place provides ingredients for meals which dreams are made of.

Yelp
NOT PATA NEGRA !!! Buyer beware !!! It looks like a very nice butcher shop in the Ironbound section of Newark, but based on a Google Search and the Yelp reviews, I came for "Pata Negra" Iberico Ham, from Spain. What they carry is a Portuguese Pig, raised in New Jersey, with a label of "Pata Negra" hung on the pig's leg. $499.00 per pound !!! First of all, "Pata Negra" refers to 0.1% of a particular Spanish Iberico Ham, which was not even exported outside of Spain until just a few years ago. Apparently, one can now purchase a pig (from Portugal, not even from Spain) that can be called "Pata Negra" and sell it for three times the cost of authentic Spanish Iberico "Pata Negra" Ham from a legitimate importer (about $1500.00 for a 7 lb ham from several companies which can be found on the Internet). I also asked the butcher about purchasing some Spanish Iberico Ham de Bellota, of which the boneless ham can be sliced, paper-thin, on a slicer, to compare with the hand-sliced ham that this butcher offered. He had NO IDEA what I was talking about. Come on !!! I tried the "Pata Negra" offered at this butcher. $55.00 for about 10 little, one inch pieces sliced from the leg. It was not even close to the buttery flavor and texture of authentic Jamon Iberico de Bellota that I have had in Spain and the USA. So, don't be fooled into paying such a ridiculous price for this "NOT PATA NEGRA" ham sold by this butcher shop. You can get the real thing, imported from Spain, for a fraction of the price.

Yelp
Got our iberico jamon here and it's delectable. The flavor is really good with just the right saltiness to it. Was planning to get some pata negra and glad that the lady had us try it first since it costs $499 per pound which is crazy expensive but im willing to splurge in small amounts. Hahah! Anyways, we found the pata negra a little saltier than the iberico. So we chose iberico instead because we prefer the taste. It's also a lot cheaper, around 50 per lb. Wished it had more fatty parts to it and seems more appealing if it's hand cut instead of the machine. Great place to get some cured meats for your charcuterie. Pairs well with wine or any liquor.

Yelp
Everything about this shop is fantastic. Very fresh, high-quality fresh and cured meats. The ham and sausages are out of this world! Worth a visit if you have never been.

Yelp
I simply cannot stop raving about the leitao or suckling pig we ordered from Rodrigo. The skin was light and crackling, meat was super juicy. Whole roast was good to the bone and good for about 12 people. Presentation was a guaranteed crowd pleaser!

Yelp
I heard this is the only place in the country that sells authentic Ibérico ham aka pata negra and given that it's local, decided to stop in for a try. All Ibérico ham is amazing in taste but there are still different types of labels... the top tier being black label from pure bred animals strictly on acorn diets from the Iberian region. Rodrigo was totally honest with me and told me he currently didn't have any of it but gave me the next best thing in the Ibérico ham hierarchy. The 4 year cured ham smelled and tasted really rich and deliciously fatty. He slowly carved away using the traditional method as he gave us a bit of history about the process and art of making this rare ham. If you want to indulge, $400 a pound is the price you will need to pay but also offers other fine hams at lower price points including the famous serrano. I'm happy to see local artisans in the neighborhood who are passionate about what they do. The shop also offered homemade cured sausage, meats, full butcher service and general grocery items. I will be back for more jamón!

Yelp
A master of pork. Cannot say enough about Don Rodrigo. Hog farmer. Charcuterie master. Butcher. Great guy. Love this shop. Get a sandwich of his aged jamon for the road.

Yelp
Absolutely the best charcuterie in the world. If this shop were in Brooklyn, lines would be down the block. Bless Rodrigo for keeping it in Newark's Ironbound. Don't sleep on the meat! I got the 60-day dry-aged ribeye, three fingers thick and smoked it: superb. Same thing with both baby backs and spareribs. Also: Rodrigo turned me on to pork neck, which had the most gorgeous tubes and money muscles for a smoker that can't be beat. The prices are mind-bogglingly low for such quality. Why go anywhere else?

Yelp
Absolutely everything is top notch. The owner raises the pigs humanely and then sells them at the store. The beef is also spectacular.

Yelp
Stopped by this morning based on recommendations from friends and did not regret it. I wound up spending 2 hours in the store talking to Rodrigo about his passion project. His love of chacuterie comes across in every action and that has earned him a fan for life. I will definitely be coming back. It's said if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. Thks is very evident when talking to him. Good luck and much success!!

Yelp
This is a gem in Newark! I didn't even know the name of this place, only saw "Gourmet House" and stopped by here to take a look, and wow! Go to the back where they sell amazing ham, sausages, dry aged meats, and sample them! They gave us a selection of meats to sample and we actually bought some, because they were just that good! It's also a grocery store that sells various Portuguese items.

Yelp
Best quality artisanal pork in the area! Acorn fed pigs. Old world style aging. Rodrigo Duarte, the owner and butcher is very accommodating and welcoming. He was even at EWR United's Portugal Pride Day! I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try.

Yelp
Caseiro é Bom is a true treasure. It is rare to find a place where the owner has such a passion for the craft. Rodrigo learned about raising hogs and curing hams from a very young age, and he later spent 7 years working to import the traditional breed of pigs for pata negra. He raises the pigs with loving care, and it can be tasted in every morsel of his delicious product, Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it is worth every penny.

Yelp
Very welcoming environment and friendly staff. I have been looking for a good local butcher since moving to Newark and I have found the one. Was offered to try one of their smoked sausages and I was blown away! This is my go to location when I am hosting a dinner party. Very fair prices.

Yelp
Put on my clean gloves (already had mask) and walk into the store. I tripped on a shallow black pan they had on the floor at the entry, that I thought was for a water leak, but it ended up being for you to step in (to sanitize bottoms of shoes?) before entering the store. A lady approached me and calls me over (not in English) to the pan to step in it. She also hands me a pair of gloves (with her bare hands). I told her I just put mine on, and I'm not taking them off to put in a pair of gloves that she is touching. I couldn't really communicate with her. I turned around and walked out. What kind of a set up is this??? I was excited to shop on this store after hearing about it and seeing wonderful reviews. I understand and respect trying to be sanitary with the virus, but there needs to be proper signage before entering to alert people that there is a black pan (on a black carpet) and you must step in it and out on a pair of their gloves...in all languages! What a waste of time and a pair of gloves. Smh

Yelp
I highly recommend this place. My husband and I found out about it through word of mouth so we decided to give it a try. The "pata negra" is DELICIOUS. The owner came to talk to us and we quickly realized why it is so good. He is passionate and knowledgeable about what he does. My husband has been to Spain so he knows what this stuff is supposed to taste like. He was so impressed (I loved it too but I don't know what the real thing tastes like because I have never been to Spain!) that he bought some for us and some to share with his parents and other friends. I have only tried Spanish food in American restaurants but I have never had a "pata negra" as tasty as the one they sell here.
