The 38 Best Restaurants in Montreal, Canada | Eater

"Smash burger joints have been cropping up all around town, but this Villeray spot should command your attention. A classic casse-croûte reimagined with some West Coast flair, the concept originated in 2015, when chef Michel Lim first started flipping burgers out of his garage for a Restaurant Day pop-up. Today, he and partner Michel Nguyen (the two are childhood friends and the minds behind La Belle Tonki) draw crowds to an eclectic space that blends hip-hop culture and movie posters with a retro diner aesthetic. MDMH impresses with perfectly pressed patties, crisply caramelized at the edges, while Lim’s thinly cut fries, cooked in beef tallow, star in poutine and the Ol’ Dirty: a mishmash with cheese sauce, house burger sauce, pickles, and onions. Vibe check: Hip-hop and hamburger heads unite in these basement digs." - Valerie Silva

The Best Poutine in Montreal | Bon Appétit

"A garage pop-up turned buzzy basement brick-and-mortar (opened spring 2023) that channels casse-croûte nostalgia with a pop-culture–clad, music-forward atmosphere and a cult following. The menu is a playful mash-up—smash burgers inspired by West Coast chains and poutine made with beef-tallow–fried potatoes—while the team’s other projects (like the sister spot La Belle Tonki) extend the creativity into items such as kimchi poutine with popcorn chicken and cheesy ramen gravy." - ByValerie Silva

Montreal’s Most Anticipated New Restaurant Openings, Fall 2022 | Eater Montreal

"The two Michels (Lim and Nguyen) behind La Belle Tonki are bringing crisp-edged smash burgers, thin-cut fries and poutine to La Petite-Patrie in a restaurant that takes over the former La Belle Tonkinoise; once a back-alley pop-up, the project promises a mash-up of American West Coast flare and Montreal casse-croûte favourites as renovations continue." - Valerie Silva

Excellent - all of it was excellent! The burger was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. It was simple and cooked very well. The poutine was alright. The animal fries were good once you mixed it all together. Took a while to get food but it was lunch hour during the week when we went. Lots of people were coming through on their lunch break. I’d go back for sure.

Tried the burger at Casse-Croûte MangeDansMonHood and it was absolutely delicious! The bread was soft, the patty had a subtle smoky flavor, and everything came together perfectly. The restaurant is tucked away in a cozy basement spot, and the service was impressively quick. Even our kids loved the burger — and they usually don’t like hamburgers! Definitely a hidden gem worth checking out.

Google
I've heard raving reviews about this place and, in terms of the vibe and staff, they're spot on. The staff are super friendly and fast to serve, and the music and atmosphere in this spot is unique. It's a small basement restaurant, but with enough room to dance to the nice tunes. The food is where this place loses me. The fries were soggy and mushy, though decently seasoned, but a lot of little bits and potato skin pieces. The burger was extremely greasy, to the point where oil was literally pouring out of the wrapping paper. The burger also looked like it has been squished into a ball, compared to all the gorgeous photos I see in other reviews. It was covered in sauce, which is not bad, because I like a juicy burger, but it was a bit too much. Thankfully, they had given me a mountain of napkins, which were necessary. Worst of all, I found an eyelash (or a short hair) imbedded in the meat of my patty when I was nearly done eating. That completely put me off my food. I feel like my experience is not the norm, and I want to give this place the benefit of the doubt, but I need some time before I come back to this spot.

Google
First let’s understand the context of why 5 stars. This is based on the fact that it’s trying to be a simple and focused burger and fry diner like non nonsense eclectic restaurant. Atmosphere hits the point perfectly. Seating is not as inviting as dining, but it’s fun and probably more comfortable when it’s not so hot in a the sweltering heat of a Montreal summer. Place to as clean though I didn’t see the washroom. Menu is simple and focused. They say what they mean and mean what they say when they offer you what’s available to eat. Service is basically wait in a (often long) line that wraps around the perimeter of the interior and then state what you wish to order. So it’s as fast as the line is. This being stated once the order is placed it’s done within less than 5 minutes. Overall the food appears and tasted fresh, the bun had a perfect ratio to meat and contents on the burger, the bun was not a overdone “brioche” or some BS bin, just a simple fresh and delicious bun that is not toasted to allow the ingredients flavours standout more. Toppings are fresh and limited which makes it simple to order. The portion for the price was competitive however the fries were served in a low level (and hat appears like a cut half way French fry bag) and it cheapened the appearance. Moreover the portion was too small, as fries are the second most profitable after beverages it’s not a big deal to add a heaping portion versus one that is essentially just about level. I also believe that they are better off to offer two sized fries and then a family package. The $4.00 is very much a small fry, then a large for $7.00 to which would be a full sized bag (or twice the portion) and then a large at $12.00 or so high could be twice the large size. The positive side is the fries are cooked to perfection. Not quite think sticks but twice fried, one for interior fluffy potato and a second at higher temp for a light crisp and an exterior. This is a perfect julienne French fry. We had a side of sauce to dip the fries in and the sauce seemed home made - maybe not, but the taste and texture was spot on and I could have guzzled the liquid like a hot toddy. All in all, not cheap (but what is these days), but well worth the effort to come out this way and enjoy a great burger and fries. If this restaurant decides to franchise all the well knows burger restaurant in the city have a lot to be scared of as this place blows all the others out of the water hands down!

I tried this place finally for the first time in Dec 2025 and it did not disappoint. You have to try the burger. The bread is soft and their special sauce is tasty. The vibe is cool and the staff were nice and helpful.

Google
I was honestly disappointed with my burger. With all the hype around this place I was expecting to like it more. I love a good burger, however this place did not resonate with me. I'll have to try it again to see if I was just unlucky. My burger had way too much mustard and overall it reminded me of an elevated McDonald's style burger. (Sorry if that offended anyone)

Google
What a vibe it is here! From the wallpaper, to the lights, to the furniture, to the outdoor seating. They only have 2 burgers to pick from but you can always add on toppings. After trying the cali burger, i had to go back for a second one. It was beyond expectations. I don’t know what they put in their house sauce, but it’s addictive! As for the fries, id say they didn’t live up to the quality of the burgers. The fries were skinny, over-fried, and dry (both in the house fries and animal style fries). Hopefully it was just a one time thing! Despite this, I would still return just for the burger.

Google
Not busy at all when I went on a Sunday at 5:30. The burgers are AMAZINGGG!!! As much as I wish the meat would be a little bit thicker, overall, it’s perfect. The fries are also so good and totally unique I find. Will definitely be coming back!!

Yelp
One of the best poutine in Montréal imo. The fries even though they're julienne are very good, cheese curd is fresh and i really like their sauce, it's ordinary brown sauce but with a little je ne sais quoi maybe another ingredient that makes it better. Better to take it to go cause there's not lots of spaces inside. Don't expect much inside it's like a cafétéria and you have to wait in line to pay and then wait for your name to be called to have your order, but food is excellent ! But in the summer must be even better cause you can eat outside as there's a couple of tables. Their smash burgers seems excellent so I'll try it next time.

Yelp
Heard a lot about this place and their smash burgers! This place has a ton of interesting soda options - from Jarritos to even various Pokemon sodas! Looking through the fridges to find the perfect accompaniment to your smash burger adds to the experience! It's also decorated super trendy and retro, kind of like an old diner/arcade of some sort. There are large tables with high chairs rather than individual small tables. I'm a big fan of the vibe here! The smash burger was great, one of the most picturesque burgers I have ever seen. The poutine was good too, however while I was eating I bit into some piece of charcoal or rock that kind of ruined my appetite. Accidents totally happen and they were happy to remake it for me, so it was not a problem at all. Overall, it's a great place to eat with friends and talk over some food!

Yelp
A bit off the beaten path that was totally worth it! We saw this pop up on a few lists of Montreal and had to check it out. Was a bit apprehensive walking up and down the steep steps but quickly we were home. Greeted by a very friendly cashier upfront and a simple menu. We got a combo of the regular and Cali burger with fries and cheesy fries. Everything just hit the spot and was phenomenal. Similar taste to in/out but better. It is such a unique location in a basement with eclectic decoration. The whole time we enjoyed some great 90's R&B. A must try!

Yelp
FÉLICITATION A L'ÉQUIPE

Yelp
If I could, I'd come here monthly and the only reason I wouldn't come more frequently is for the sake of my waistline. We got the poutine and Cali burger. Only reason we shared a burger was because we planned on eating again pretty soon. But next time, I'm getting my own. Both were delicious. Do not leave Montréal without eating here. You order at the counter, pick up your drinks from a fridge in the back corner (they do have alcohol), and there's maybe two dozen seats in this casual space? We came at around 2pmish and didn't have to wait to order and had ample seats to choose from.

Yelp
We've often used the expression "melt-in-your-mouth" but this is ridiculous. The succulent, exquisite, perfectly cooked, juicy and crispy patty on a superb, soft potato roll you barely know is there topped with a heavenly sauce of which any English adjective is unworthy to describe. It's so moist and soft that It feels less like eating and more like absorption. You just assimilate this burger in your body and resistance is futile. And then theres the place itself. Decorated in a mid-90s theme which we LOVED. (I mean they had POGs!!) adorned with a beautiful distinct and memorable logo - a timeless Casse-Croûte look and smell that enhances the craving. To top it all off the speedy, friendly and very well organized team round out a flawless experience. (there was a medical emergency while we were there, apprently in the kitchen, and they did not miss a beat at all)

Yelp

Yelp
My wife and I recently visited Casse-Croute Mange dans Mon Hood after searching the best smash burgers. Upon walking in we sensed this was going to be quite the experience, the staff was extremely friendly, the ambiance was really trending and inviting as was the small of smash burgers. We ordered the Cali and Happy and to our surprise they were both GREAT! as were the fries. This is one place we are going to visit more frequently.

Jade B.

Yelp
I first heard of this place before they opened and couldn't wait to try them!! Finally went today, right before the second opening of the day at 5pm. I tried the Cali burger and the regular fries, I also noticed they had a wide variety of drinks. I would of liked a fizzy water option like Bubly or Lacroix though. The Cali burger came with a sauce that reminded me of the In & Out sauce, it also had all of the traditional ingredients you would find in a burger. The brioche bun was also a nice touch and I would definitely try this burger again, perhaps without the sauce next time and with an extra patty. The fries were also done to perfection, not too crispy and not too mushy and were made from scratch. When I was there, the place filled up in the blink of an eye and I have no doubt that they will earn a solid place on the list of must try burgers in Montreal!!

Lisa T.

Yelp
Excellent food, service, and ambiance. Best smash burgers in Montreal. Wide drink selection.
