Aura, a New Bar and Restaurant with Frozen Drinks, Is Coming to Osterman Beach | Eater Chicago

"On North Avenue Beach, Castaways Bar & Grill is a massive concessions stand shaped like a steamship and long regarded as a seasonal staple and near-icon of summer; it’s leased by the Chicago Park District to Phil Stefani Signature Restaurants. Currently the venue remains temporarily closed for about $150,000 worth of renovations with no announced reopening date, though Anthony Stefani has said he’s hoping to move forward and bring a much-needed fresh new look. Known for great food, ice-cold drinks, and live music every weekend, it’s the place many Chicagoans and tourists say they live for in summer." - Naomi Waxman

Castaways Bar & Grill Review - Lincoln Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If you’ve always wondered what’s up with that giant boat on North Avenue Beach, it’s Castaways. And while this place is a total sh*tshow, if you want a burger after drinking at the beach all day and/or love hearing radio DJs broadcast Top 40 hits, then this is the place to be - provided you’re in party mode." - Adrian Kane

Excellent food. We had dinner last Friday. They do have some special old-fashioned drinks (we are from Kansas—it was new to us and yummy). The waitress was a rock star. I had coleslaw and baked white fish with drawn butter! My family had the breaded version and said it was terrific. The interior is really charming! And, a spectacular sunset.

We were headed home from a trip to the UP and googled places to eat in Tomahawk. The internet was right, this is a wonderful place to eat. Our server, Shannon, was the best. The food was delicious. It was just a little ways off 51 but we'll worth the drive.

This restaurant is Themed after the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks. As I drove past it, I knew we were going back here to eat. We went back and were not disappointed. This restaurant was packed and there’s a reason for that. I had a Fish Platter with Shrimp, Haddock, and Perch on it. Amazing. Put this restaurant on your must go to list. Enjoy…

Our friends turned us on to Castaways, & now we can’t get enough of it. The appetizers are great (Reuben rolls are homemade too), our son had the monster Wisco burger and boy, that thing is huge, plus other burgers & sandwiches. This last visit we had fish fry, fish tacos, baked haddock & more. All of our fish dishes were really good. The clam chowder soup and beer cheese soup were excellent. Cocktails are good with some specialty varieties. Nice atmosphere, great service & the owner is super nice. Right on the Wisconsin River so it has a great view from the dining room. Very clean inside as well.

We (a party of 10) have been there a few times on Friday fish fry, which is their busiest time. The food was very good, coming out on time, and pretty much arriving for everyone in a timely fashion. They were attentive as we ate. The scenery of the Wisconsin River was a nice backdrop. The interior is nice and airy - you don' feel stifled in a stuffy bar. Their bar is big and expansive. Plenty of parking. The staff is nice and very efficient.

Service was awesome and food was tasty. Nice location right on the water with a large dining room and accessible by boat which is an awesome perk. Large bar area along with video gaming. The waitress was attentive and the food was top notch. Definitely enjoyed our email and would be back.

Google
Nice local spot! Service was very friendly, and food was tasty. So glad they kept the Snapper's cheese curd recipe - they are delightful puffy cheese squares, very unique! Live music was very loud in the dining room - likely to be heard over the noise of the bar.

Busy. Wait staff could visit tables more but they were busy. Remodeled inside but no real change from Happy Snapper. Very LOUD inside. Most had to do with intoxicated boisterous customers but still, very loud. Friday fish fry. $14 for 3 piece haddock. Cooked well, moist and tender. Fries were crispy. Nothing is seasoned well. Fairly bland and not salted. Tarter sauce is mostly mayo or similar base with a tiny bit of dill and pickle added. Could use a lot more flavor. Cole slaw was very creamy too. Could cut the sauce down by well over half and they will have a good product there. Pickle chips were very good. Kind of hard to screw up frozen appetizers though. They have a ways to go to get a 4th star on food. But they are comparable to other local places. Good, not really good or great. Whiskey Old Fashioned was good. $60 for two fish dinners, pickle chips and a few drinks. Wait staff was friendly. Well it’s been a while and thought I would try again and see if improvements or changes have been made…. I’ll put as much effort into this as that have. Nothings changed. Invest your money elsewhere. This isn’t worth it.

Yelp
We enjoyed the beer at Castaways, but unfortunately the food wasn't our favorite. The chicken salad sandwich didn't taste right, and was quite wet. The bread itself tasted stale as well. Good spot for drinks, but if I were to go back I would probably pass on the food.

Yelp
If you head here to enjoy a delicious fish fry (haddock or perch) be sure to arrive very early on a Friday if that's your plan because this place is a very popular Fish Fry spot among locals. You can dine inside or outside on the patio when the weather is nice and enjoy a water view of both Lake Mohawksin and the Wisconsin River at either spot. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service is 10/10, the food is delicious, and the overall theme is lake life. Highly, highly, highly recommend the grilled cheese. It was ooey, gooey, thick and grilled to perfection.

Yelp
Bob & I stopped by to check out the new Castaways Bar & Grill during their soft open. The bar, dining room & kitchen has been fully renovated. Trish, Greg & their crew did a wonderful job!! The food & drinks were exceptional!! They are developing their nightly specials...Wednesdays from open to close is "Ladies Night" $3 wine & 1/2 price appetizers. The food has been amazing every time we've eaten there. Can't wait to see what specials the other nights will have!! The also have gluten free options! So awesome as they're right on Lake Mohawksin!!

Yelp
We had a delicious afternoon meal. Two in the party had the 3 tacos meal and were able to choose the protein they wanted for each taco. The others in the party had the Phillycheesesteak sandwich and the club sandwich. Nice portions of food. Service was great. We ate in the room that had windows facing the lake. Perfect for a beautiful weather day.

Yelp
Food was good, service was good But the number of people allowed to smoke at their tables while we were eating made it really unpleasant. Thought Wisconsin had laws about smoking in public areas.

Yelp
Excellent place! Food is all homemade, fresh, and delicious. If you want to be in a fun atmosphere with beautiful views, this is your place. Besides the food and environment being good, the friendly staff and owner will make you want to come back!
