10 Top Sicilian Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"Dubbed for Sicily’s second largest city, situated at the base of Mt. Etna on the East Coast, this classic Ridgewood Sicilian bakery offers butter cookies, cakes, breads and croissants, doughnuts, and luscious pastries, many bearing fresh fruit and filled with the cannoli cream for which this long-running establishment is justifiably famous. Around holidays like Easter and Christmas, the bakery rolls out special Sicilian and Neapolitan pastries." - Robert Sietsema

I love everything from here. But the cashier need some lessons of how to treat customers. They need to be patient. I was checking everything but because they rush me I couldn't chose anything else. I'm still happy with my order because I didn't let her ruin my day. But sometimes we are in the good mood . For her everyday she is not in the good mood.

I was at this location today , And one of the cashiers was very rude when she was taking my order , she refused to take my order , she ask me to go to the back , in the line there was 2 customers that they were white , I ask her who is going to take my order , you ask me to go to the back , She was very rude screaming 😱, at me , she say that the other other person was doing my order , I say but you ask me to go to the back , this happend between 11, am to 11:20 am , the way I was treated make leave my food , which I love the food from this place , but I refuse to get treated with hate , no human beings needs to get treated bad at no places , where my money counts , it's the business that benefits from it's customers , I requested to speak to the boss , but she was screaming saying so many bad words , I decided to leave and I refuse to pay for my food , I will take my business else where , i hope she gets discipline from her boss .

Went in to try out a few different treats. We got a few cookies and chocolate mousse ball. The cookies were okay, and the chocolate mousse was pretty good. Look forward to trying other things that may be more tastier. The shop was really clean and updated and the staff were super helpful and friendly.

Google
I love this bakery, but every time I walk at night, I see a lot of bread that looks good filling these bins and makes me a bit upset... I understand that it is probably not that fresh anymore, but they could sell it cheaper. Also, there are apps like TooGoodToGo that help restaurants and bakeries to sell items at lower prices that are not that fresh anymore. It's sad to see all that going to waste

Google
I am appalled and shocked with todays purchase at Catania’s bakery. As you can see in the picture they baked a cigarette bud into the loaf of bread to our surprise when we sliced the bread. This brings to question the integrity of this bakery how can Catania’s bakery allow such a revolting action to process through and go to sell for the public. I am enraged with the situation, and now that we are going through a covid 19 era where businesses have to implement cleanliness especially if it’s going to the public. Please be aware of the places you purchase your food, I wanted to share this incident that occurred to my family today with the public in the Ridgewood/Bushwick community

Google
I love Catania Bakery. Their pastries are excellent. However, I'm here for the Grilled Chicken, fresh mozzarella with Basil and Pesto on a hero. Delicious 24/7.

Google
I bought the “Tiramisu birthday cake “ When I cut it I couldn’t believe my eyes I got some chocolate cake with frosting What a disappointment…. Half landed in the garbage. I would like to add the picture but I don’t have option here.

Google

Disgusting last time I went there !

Yelp
As soon as we walked into this place we smelled the fresh baked goods penetrating our senses. Wow wow wow! Prices are extremely reasonable. You can tell the baker when he refills the displays he poured his heart into baking the pastry. We ordered 4 delicious mouth watering deserts and couldn't wait until we got home to devour them. Absolutely delicious. While waiting we noticed many people ordering the coffee. We can't wait to come back and try it. Thank you for being in our area! We love you!

Michelle M.

Yelp
I'm not sure what this bakery thinks that they're doing charging as much as they're charging for the quality they are serving. They must've changed their baker number one because their recipe has changed and not for the better.. this needs to go back to prices from 2016 because it's just not what it used to be. I was born and raised in this area and have been coming here since I was a child I'm 35 and I'm sad to say I won't be going anymore.. their flavor and recipe has changed and the prices have gone up not worth it anymore

Yelp
Catania is an exceptional bakery, renowned for its delightful assortment of cookies and tarts. Their cakes are also excellent, but I especially enjoy ordering their cheesecake, which never fails to impress.

Yelp
Packaging looked so cute and it's a nice small Italian business. I wish the pastries had names on them... I want to know what I'm ordering and any special names to learn. Idk if they changed that since I went a while ago. No seating anywhere, solely a to go order. Ladies were nice and willing to help.

Yelp
My family's go to spot for fresh semolina bread. Also recently discovered their on UberEats. Breakfast sandwiches always a hit. Cannoli is prob best around.

Yelp
My family (not me) has been a long time customer since childhood. They live in CT and asked for a nostalgic order from their favorite bakery. It's been years since they come back. Seems as if the business and business model has changed for the worst. They got the order wrong, acknowledged that it was wrong and after several calls with non of them returned - i came in person to rectify the issue. Not only were they rude, though they acknowledge the error, they refused to refund the money (for what was missing), they made me feel like I'm was the problem and threatened me on top of that. I have to laugh cause the $$ Amount is soooo insignificant. They hire teenagers who have no control, they have a fake mob boss who comes out to threaten you and at the end of the day nothing was resolved. This situation is sad, pathetic and I'm sorry I had to waste so much of my valuable time. Never again!!

Yelp
I stopped by to grab a few goodies for the road. The parking is difficult. Be sure to have someone sit in the car while you run inside! Everything was fresh! I'm definitely returning!
google avatar

Leticia J.

Yelp
Love their cheesecakes! Not too dense, very smooth. Pretty good birthday cakes too, fresh and not overly sweet.

Magaly M.

Yelp
This bakery is always nice and clean and the pastries are amazing. Also, the cakes they make good breakfast.

Michelle M.

Yelp
These are some of the best and most authentic Italian treats outside of Italy! I went to Catania, Sicily recently, and I have to say these treats are as sumptuous and traditional as found there. The lobster tails are amazing! But really, any thing there is an absolute delight! Go again, and again. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Ayesha T.

Yelp
Bought the lobster rolls and eclairs for the office. Their pastries are really fresh and consistently good!
google avatar

Yelp
now THIS is a sandwich made with love. best sandwich around honestly. pastries are really good too but gd that sandwich
google avatar

Yelp
Chocolate cake heaven! If you're around the area, don'tforget to get it. It's not overly sweet but mousse is so velvety and the cake is soft and moist, I would say this is one of my favorite chocolate cakes I've tried!
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
A cool, clean bakery with a variety of reasonably good pastries. They seem to do non-chocolate things better, for whatever my two cents are worth.

Yelp
Catania Bakery has an amazing selection of Italian Breads, Pastries, Cookies, Cakes and surprisingly Hero sandwiches. Customer service was on point, lovely lady behind the counter was very informative and had some great suggestions on what to try out. I couldn't help myself so I got a little of everything. I am happy I did because everything was delicious, most importantly not to sweet. Would definitely be back on my next trip.

Yelp
We got some cannoli shells from here because this place makes awesome. My aunt and cousin spoke so highly of this place. So what we ended up doing was legendary. We took about a dozen cannolis shells and made all feeling and took them home. Making can always show it isn't easy, but this place makes cannoli shells so well. So we ended up doing is making our own cannolis with the shows that they baked. They did an awesome job making those cannolis shells and I am a big fan of their cannoli shells. I would definitely come back here again and I highly recommend this place for people who have a sweet tooth.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
If you've never been here, you're failing your sweet tooth requirements. This bakery is no joke and they bring their A-game. The staff keeps thing moving and they don't wait for slackers to take their time with the order - it's that old school Brooklyn, Italian vibe that I love. I bought some cannolis and a few other Italian pastries (not a clue what they're called, but the one was hella rum infused), and it was out of this world. You gotta check this place out.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and fresh! Love it !! I go here every Sunday .. I totally recommend this place especially for holidays ! Their thanksgiving selection was amazing !!!

Yelp
Customer service in Catania bakery on Fresh Pond Rd does NOT exits. I ordered and PAID for 2 olive loaves on Thursday, when I was told they would make the bread. My husband went today, with the paid receipt and the person working told him they did not make the bread! The never had the decency or brains to call me and tell me they did NOT have the bread. When he went, he asked for the $12 I paid for the bread they DID NOT made. She told my husband she WAS NOT AUTHORIZED TO DO THAT. He was livid. Repeating in the bakery, loudly, I want my money back. He said call the cops because I am not leaving. After several minutes, she asked a worker in the back if she CAN return the $12, she WAS ALLOWED and he left. What kinds of incompetent business policies, or lack of, do the have. NO BUSINESS ETHICS AT ALL. They lost a GOOD CUSTOMER.

Yelp
This is a daily stop for my husband and I. He loves their breads, because most of them are semolina flour based, and he likes the flavor more. They do offer a slicing service for loafs, we usually decline so I do not know if there is a fee. It is always nice to have their fresh breads and croissants around the house. They also have delicious desserts. I am still waiting to try their cheesecake. You can smell sweet cookies as soon as you walk around the block, it drives the kids in the neighborhood crazy. Their bagels look huge, but they do not toast them or have cream cheese for them. So whatever you buy at Catania, you will need to prep yourself at home. I had their iced coffee and liked that too, but it was a bit pricey and their was sugar grit in the bottom of the cup. They do not have lids for their cups and are cash only.

Marco S.

Yelp
A far cry from what they used to be. Starting with sour ricotta and cream in lobster tails, to jelly filled cookies that taste like they have pepper in them. We need to return to a time when flavor was valued as much as profit.

Ethan F.

Yelp
If you want to find the BEST pastries co.e to this small corner place food is amazing and awesome service
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Love this place. I've never had a bad experience here. The baked good are fresh and flavorful and go great with their coffee which is also quite good. I always get the chocolate rugelach which is something I was introduced to at this bakery. The deli sandwiches are made fresh and worth the wait, but it can be confusing to figure out where to order deli when everyone else wants bakery.
google avatar

Elisa G.

Yelp
My first time going there today 5/23/21. I had their Italian bread - crusty on the outside and airy and chewy on the inside - absolute perfection!!! Also had the croissant-flaky and crusty with a well-balanced buttery flavor. Will definitely continue to go there!!
google avatar

Florian G.

Yelp
delicous bread and cookie ... ice cofe ... use to take my stepson brian here after he did community service at the recycling plant "if i buy you a cheesecake will you be good" he drove his scooter thru the front window of a foot locker to steal free sneakers ... later in life he joined the miltary (coast Guard Reserves), he got a vasectomy but his wife got pregnant from siting on a dirty tolet seat in cochella california ... some day i will bring his son Tihm here buy him a treat, and tell him "it's a lie your dad didnt' die climbing mt everest, he ate to much Fentinol" ...

Yelp
Hands down my new favorite spot in Brooklyn/Flushing! The sandwich maker is always a delight to talk to and he will eventually start predicting your order if you swing by enough. The women at the bakery counter are always very sweet and helpful. Go try a sub or a turnover! I always get the Phil, #7.

Yelp
Was closed before the indicated close time. Was suppose to close at 11. Walked about a mile to come here and upon arrival saw that the gate was fully closed with no signs of being open recently.
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
When you walk in, this bakery is spotless and all the cakes and pastries are displayed beautifully. Friendly staff, and most importantly; Delicous cakes! The perfect combination of sweet, moist and rich. Not overly sweet, just the perfect balance. Real Italian bakery- can't wait to go back

Michelle K.

Yelp
Not only is the staff so friendly and gracious, the food is delicious! I recently ordered a few items from Catania Bakery, and when delivered, saw that two of the items I had ordered were missing. I called the bakery and they were amazing! Not only were they so kind and apologetic, but they even sent out a new delivery with my missing items plus some treats. I'm so grateful for their generosity. I know it's a stressful time on everyone including small businesses. If you've never been there, definitely try it!
google avatar

Yelp
Catania is my go to bakery for sweets. Their cheesecake and coffee-cake are out of this world. I also recommend the butter cookies. They also have amazing breakfast sandwiches.
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
They have everything. Cookies, cake, pie all to die for. Huge selection. My cakes were pretty fresh. just updated my review 4 to a 5, eliminating some of your plastic packaging. Awesome!

Yelp
What a wonderful Italian bakery. The smells alone will make you go wild. Came in this morning with the Princess on our way to the L train and we got this creation that was bread style cake, covered in granulated sugar and filled with Canolli cream. Sweet but not cloying with the right amount of give. A filling and delicious breakfast treat. Everything else looked great and those cherry danishes are next on my hit list.

Chastity A.

Yelp
I love this bakery since I was a little girl my grandma would buy me there cookies breads pastries so delicious and great family business!!

Yelp
If the Greek Gods sit atop Mt. Olympus flanked by nectar and ambrosia, I'm pretty sure Jupiter and Juno lounge about on Mt. Etna, gorging themselves on Inis made by this bakery. While the sweet, sweet cannoli cream which fills this pastry is solid and delightful (Laguli's makes it better), the perfectly made, perfectly textured and perfectly sugared bread/doughnut which encases it is shattering. Go and get it, it is unique and you won't be disappointed. Also had the Cartocci (together with the Inis is the bakery's signature sweets and they sell out pretty quickly after they come out at about 11am), the Genovesi (lemon filling, great texture and not too sweet) and the chocolate cigars. Their semolina bread is very very good.

Yelp
This place has 0 vegan options which is pretty sad & excluding.... I will admit the coffee is delicious but could they at least have an option for OAT milk I mean cmon, it's 2019 already ! Update !
google avatar

NW N.

Yelp
I wish we could separate the deli from the bakery. The DELI is a 3.5 with good portions, fresh tasting fillings and an enthusiastic staff that really listens to you. The BAKERY side staff were great folks too however the products tasted off to me. I hate writing that but ended up going several times to get a range of items including brownies, muffins, cookies, cannoli (some suggested by staff) only for the flavors &/textures to seem amiss e.g. sour, sub-sweet, stale.
google avatar

Deborah F.

Yelp
Beautiful breads, cakes, cookies and other delicious treats! We were on good behavior (lol, since we had just eaten brunch) so we tried some cookies and a tiny fruit tart. All very good and as such, I'm glad we're merely visiting this area for a few days or I would become a Catania addict!

Dee A.

Yelp
So good! Everything we got was fresh and delicious. Great assortment of cakes and pastries.

K L.

Yelp
I bought the best, freshest danishes I have ever had from this bakery. Nice staff. Great!
google avatar

Zoë F.

Yelp
Such kind staff and delicious cheesecake! The deli has such a variety that I am never bored and always satisfied. Coffees are also very good!

L z.

Yelp
I'm waiting in line to get a croissant and the 10 ppl ahead of me are all ordering 3-5 croissants each. I'm thinking that they'll be out before I get to the counter! Nope, they bring out more. This is a good place to get your AM croissant. The brownie hits the spot if you want something chocolate and heavy. The carrot cake has their spin, not the typical flavor you expect from carrot cake. Overall, I come for the croissants and Italian bread. Support local business :).
google avatar

Yelp
My absolute favorite. I usually order the Parma di prosciutto and it's always amazing!

Yelp
Before Catania, my gold standard for Italian bakeries was Lucibello's in New Haven (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lucibellos-italian-pastry-shop-new-haven). I have to say that this place is better, and here is why: somehow they have figured out how to make clamshells just crunchy enough not to make them mushy, but not so crusty that they scratch your palate. Anything canolo-cream-filled (including, but not limited to the canoli) is a definite go. They have another location in the same neighborhood, but officially in Queens: http://www.yelp.com/biz/catania-bakery-ridgewood Everything that peopled paeaned about there applies here as well (and vice versa).
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
My favorite place to go for desserts that impress my guests. To avoid becoming the size of a small house, I only allow myself to walk into the bakery when company is coming over. The bakers here offer a dozen or so breads, perhaps twenty or so cookies, cakes--including cheesecake that is (almost) as good as my own! Their best offering, in my opinion, is the mini-pastries. These include tiramisu, a variety of chocolate mousse creations, Neapolitans, and tarts, among others. Priced by the pound, these average about 1.50 each. I usually get a half dozen, slice them into bite-sized servings, and plate them up for the perfect end to a home-cooked meal for friends. Hit the ATM before you stop by. They don't take credit cards, and you will be tempted to spend beyond the change in your pocket.
google avatar

Lex T.

Yelp
Omg!!! I haven't had a bad thing from here yet. Their prosciutto bread is outstanding! The cheese and olive breads are delicious too. I've had many of their pastries and they didn't disappoint. I'm not a fan of cannoli but my friend insisted I try it from here and I have to say that I'm glad I did. I ended up ordering the chocolate cannoli. Lol!!! All in all, this is a great bakery and I'm looking forward to trying more goodies.
google avatar

Jacqueline G.

Yelp
My dad and uncle grew up in Ridgewood and my Nonna still lives in the neighborhood, therefore I can't remember an occasion, holiday, or family party that didn't include Catania pastries. We've ordered countless cookies, breads, cakes etc. and have never had a complaint. From inis to sfogliatelle everything is fresh, made in shop and delicious. Friendly employees and consistent quality keep us coming back.
google avatar

Elly C.

Yelp
Came here one time to buy and plain bagel with cream cheese and it was like 4$ no lie I was shocked so then I thought okay it must have good enough cream cheese turns out it did not! If you're going to come here expect it to be pricey!

Clara E. R.

Yelp
I have lived in ridgewood for over 35 years. I love the neighborhood and I have been going to this establishment for many years. In the last couple of years they have renovated into a trendy bakery. However, the prices have inflated and the policy have changed to include additional fees for an already set price. (For example an extra $0.75 to warm up your milk for coffee, and an additional $1.00 to toast your bread). This is ridiculous, NEVER AGAIN !!

Lynn R.

Yelp
Ordered on Uber eats. One of my items was not placed in the box. I called Catania soeak to a what sounds like a young woman who listens to the discrepency then proceeds to put the phone down and then the call disconnects. I call back. An older lady picks up and tells me that I can come back in a day or two to pick up the missing item? I will say the items I did order were very good.
