25 Places to Eat and Drink in Asbury Park

"Local favorite chef, Aimee McElroy, formerly of Medusa Stone Fired Kitchen, is back at it, making her specialty pies, salads, and sides. Grab a seat on the deck that overlooks Deal Lake or a table in a dining room with glampy cabin vibes. Share a fennel and sausage pizza, or one with meatballs, mushrooms, or roasted eggplant (there are classics available, too). It’s a booze-free spot, with a Mocking Bar of zero-proof or botanical beverages, though you can also BYOB. Breakfast and lunch is available Sunday." - Celia Buckley, Melissa McCart

"Serving blistered pizzas and rotating specials in a revamped lakeside chalet-like space, I appreciate that chef Aimée McElroy is back at the oven; the restaurant is BYOB and also offers an interesting menu of non-alcoholic options highlighting notable N/A producers." - Marion Brewer

The 18 Best Restaurants In Asbury Park

"Catbird is a new BYO restaurant and pizzeria in a fully renovated, idyllic location along Deal Lake in Asbury Park. The food might remind you of Medusa, a ghost of Asbury restaurant’s past, and you’ll find stuff like simple seasonal salads with arugula and blueberries, roasted vegetables, and the biggest reason to come: their signature, slightly misshapen, nearly square wood-fired pizzas. We really like the use of vegetables on the pies, like the roasted eggplant with pesto or a spicy sausage and ricotta pie covered in trimmed fennel fronds. The atmosphere is basically an Adirondack cabin, and they have a great outdoor dining area that gives you direct views of aviary life swooping down towards the lake fetching their own dinner. Make sure to finish those crusts before the osprey and eagles do. " - michael sinatra

Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: May 28 | Eater NY

"I’ve been enjoying the scene and the booze-free bar at the newly opened Catbird in Asbury Park: the surf-shack–like pizzeria from co-owner and chef Aimée McElroy offers walk-up ordering and Neapolitan-style pizzas including marinara, a mushroom trio, and a bold puttanesca with anchovies, capers, and olives ($18); you can order a satisfying booze-free gin and tonic or bring a bottle of wine to enjoy on the deck that overlooks Deal Lake." - Eater Staff

I found this place on Instagram and I absolutely love it!! I’ve been twice now and both times were great experiences. Such a great atmosphere outside by the water. There's always ducks when I've gone that is such a nice touch. The pizza is delicious as well along with the salad and wings. Every server and people working there are all very kind and welcoming as well and keep things running smoothly!

What an amazing place! A beautiful secluded restaurant off the busy parts of Asbury Park. My wife and I showed up a little before 3pm opening on Sunday and waited comfortably outside. We sat on the deck and were treated to an amazing bird show with red wing blackbirds, robins, great blue herons, swans, cormorants, ducks, and geese! And by the way the food was amazing! We ordered the arugula salad, the puttanesca pizza, and the olives. Everything was fresh and perfectly seasoned. Aimee (owner) and Michael (server) were friendly and efficient. Highly recommend Catbird AP!

Our group sat outdoors on the deck overlooking the lake. Beautiful evening and nice to be off the beaten path in Asbury. There were a lot of bugs as it got later and the restaurant would benefit from purchasing the table top fans that keep the bugs away. We started with corn chowder which was decadent ! Followed by farro salad - the pickled onions and warm farro made this dish. The ingredients were simple and clean yet the taste was not compromised in any way. We then had chicken wings - didn’t care for the flavor on these - somewhat of a fishy taste on some - yet they were cooked to perfection. The eggplant and pesto pizza was excellent ! The dough was delicious and the flavors from the eggplant and basil were the perfect touch. Service and overall hospitality is lacking. Feels as if the patrons are an inconvenience to some of the people who work here and that is the prime reason for less stars. There was a tall, large male who greeted us (the restaurant was mostly empty at 5:30 on a week night- after Labor Day). He seemed angry and as if a larger group annoyed him. We were seated at one picnic table and didn’t require any extra accommodations or tables. His body language gave off an unhappy / unwanted vibe. Perhaps he was having an off evening but it created a negative energy and one that seriously lacked in hospitality. Additionally , this same man (accidentally) dropped a large bottle of water which sprayed two of us with water quite a bit. He could have come over and simply said sorry and brought us some napkins - rather he did nothing. It was as if it was our problem he sprayed us with water. In instances like this, customarily restaurants will offer a coffee or dessert on the house , in this case bringing over napkins and a simple apology would have been appreciated. The overall service experience was lacking and it’s a shame because the chef did a top notch job with the food !

Google
This restaurant is delightful! Cozy, warm decor, attentive staff and delicious food! I can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. The pizza reminded me of the pizza in Naples. The servings were a nice size. We got the Kale salad and the Arugula salad, a white chocolate risotto special that was out of this world! And 2 pizzas. Margarita and spicy sausage. They were both yummy. We ate the leftover pizza for breakfast.

We ate here for the first time this past weekend and absolutely love the entire experience. The owner was fabulous and came over to meet us, and because I am currently pregnant and also sober. The nonalcoholic menu was absolutely to die for! We got the seasonal dishes, especially the fig pizza. It was so good. Definitely can’t wait to go back.

Google
Very pleased this visit. All of my previous concerns have been completely addressed. Food was fantastic. Server was cordial and engaged. And now you can sit at a table, review the Menu and order. This also makes it much easier to interact and tip your server. So glad about these changes. I hope they are permanent and not just seasonal. Will definitely be back.

Google
Small and quaint. Pizza was good but if you had any wood fired Pizza in the area, like porta for example, it's not really anything special. Limited menu option and pretty horrid drink options. Whatever soft drinks they concoct there are simply awful. It's BYO for liquor but pack a beverage of choice if if you're not drinking alcohol. Quaint and small, definitely sit outside if possible. Also, parking is street parking only so be prepared to look for a spot on the road during busier times.

Google
I visited this restaurant with friends to celebrate a special occasion. We started with the peppers and bread appetizer, followed by several pizzas. The food was flavorful, though the pizzas were noticeably soft and lacked structural firmness. While I would consider returning due to the quality of the food, our experience was negatively impacted by the head chef’s demeanor. The chef, identifiable by her glasses, appeared to be in a poor mood, which affected the atmosphere. Upon arrival, we observed her speaking sharply to the host while we were trying to find a seat. Later, when we requested a minor modification to one pizza—omitting sausage on half, as three of our four guests were abstaining from meat for Good Friday—the chef declined the request. This was surprising, especially since the restaurant was not busy at the time. The refusal was communicated in a way that felt dismissive and was audible to our table, making us feel uncomfortable. The rest of the staff was courteous and attentive, and the food was enjoyable overall. I hope the establishment considers adopting a more customer-focused approach in the future, particularly regarding dietary accommodations. With improvements in this area, I would gladly return and recommend the restaurant.

Yelp
The service was fantastic- went for the first time last night and truly enjoyed the experience from start to finish. The staff was polite and attentive. Food was delicious, and the serving sizes are very reasonable. Great atmosphere as well. It is clear that they saw the early reviews regarding service concerns and did everything they could to fix it. Would highly recommend. Prices on canned drinks were a bit pricey, but on the whole, an amazing experience. Looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Hostess was great and personable and explained the process to us because it was our first time being at Catbird. Process being you ordered and paid first and they bought food out to your seat. We ate outside which was overlooking a lake It was a hot day but they had fans out which helped. View was nice and breeze was there We got charred kale salad and two pizzas sausage fennel and eggplant pesto were bother really good 12' pizzas (6 slices ) We also had the Blanc and rose non alcoholic beverages Tasty but not for me Beer would of been great So we had a slice and took the rest home Delicious the next day too Great spot for pizza We will be back

Yelp
This was my first time visiting Catbird. Cute byob pizza joint in residential area of Asbury. Loved the waterfront dining deck overlooking a beautiful lake. Staff were very friendly as well. I ordered the margarita pizza. It was everything! Loved the charred thin crust, sauce and fresh mozzarella. The dough was amazing. They were closing but were kind enough to let me get my order in to go. Great service! I just wish I ate the pizza in my car. By the time I arrived home it was cold but still delicious. I can't wait to return and try the pizza hot next time. lol.

Yelp
First come, first serve, and they're only open for a few hours for dinner. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, though both are quite warm in the summer weather. You order and pay before you sit. We ordered a salad and two pies, upon the recommendation of the staff, which was honestly, too much food. We had the salad of the day, a spring mix with five half cut grape tomatoes and five slices of mozzarella with a berry dressing. Very underwhelming for the price. I saw the kale salads, and they are much more worth your money. Our pizzas were the margherita and the puttanesca. The margherita was good, standard taste, and a classic. The puttanesca was okay, it just didn't have a distinguishing flavor, until biting into an anchovy. They are very slow, which was the worst part of the experience. We received our salad quickly, but after finishing our salad, it was almost 45 minutes until we got our pizzas.

Yelp
The former Sunset Landing which has been closed for about a year, was sold recently and has opened recently under new ownership and a new name, Catbird. It's located in the far western part of Asbury Park on the border of Ocean Township overlooking Deal Lake. They are open for a late lunch and dinner at this time. 4pm is kickoff. I must say the staff is very very polite and there when you need them. One can eat indoors or out on the deck weather permitting all pizzas are 12 inches not very large, but quite different. Something that is a little unusual for me is that you pay upfront. The only problem with that is if you're dining and you would like something in addition ( an afterthought ), one would have to go thru the payment part again. I wish the owners luck

Yelp
excellent spot for a great dinner view and great quality wood fire pizza! the place itself is cozy and has a nice interior style. the staff and customer service is what really brings this experience next level. aside from the delicious speciality pizza options, they also have great appetizers and specials. We had the mussels, shisito peppers, and Roasted eggplant pizza. was superb! highly recommend dining here

Yelp
Oh yea!!! You order at the counter first and then sit, which i could tell a lot of people weren't understanding at the tables around us but its a very simple process... We sat outside and it was a really beautiful view and super pretty. Inside was very cute too but was a little too hot to sit down on a hot day. To start we got the arugula salad with blueberries and balsamic glaze and it was SOOOO GOOD! My boyfriend got the mussels special with chorizo and white wine broth and said they were absolutely delicious and that the broth was amazing. for pizzas we tried the eggplant and pesto pizza and the meatball pizza. both were delicious!!! the meatball was a little light on the basil but i'm a big basil lover, no big deal haha. definitely coming back to try the rest!! everyone was so nice and had great vibes.

Yelp
A wonderful restaurant. I had a pizza, my wife had soup and crusty bread. Both meals were delicious. The pizza was super thin, and was probably most reminiscent of pizza I've had in Italy. We also had a couple of mocktails, which were wonderful. The only trouble was that the night we went was a little chilly, so we couldn't enjoy their deck. So we went back the next night. Another wonderful meal. Me: another pizza. The wife: the meatballs, which she said were as good as the meatballs her mother (of blessed memory) used to make. She has never said that before. I should add, I had a white pie, so I asked for a side of marinade (for crust dipping). It was really terrific. The deck on the water was totally worth going back for. And the service was excellent. They are clearly invested in you having a good dining experience. All in all, a terrific restaurant in every way.

Yelp
Good pizza and salad, but be prepared to wait if you want a table outside. Plenty of seating inside, but it gets very hot inside. Friendly staff and good customer service. You order and pay as you enter and then are seated at your table. Nice views of the water. Street parking only. They don't take reservations.

Tia D.

Yelp
Pros: in the most important factor, the food is delicious and will leave your tastebuds happy. We ordered a bunch of various pies, I forget which but one had fig and it was delicious. Crust is perfection. BYOB. Great service. It's an odd ordering process, whereby you wait outside until called. Then you place your order and pay upfront before they will seat you. It's a good concept to keep the tables churning and requiring minimal service, but it did prevent us from ordering more food for the kids. The deck is lovely and we enjoyed the ambiance. Con: it's in a strange residential area and parking is difficult to find. The waiting will probably be more of an issue in harsh weather.

Yelp
Great food, views and service. We highly recommend it. Would be good if they took reservations.

Yelp
Total 10/10. The food was awesome. The restaurant had an amazing vibe and the waiters mullet was LEGIT. I would highly recommend. We split pizzas and the wings with rosemary are amazing.

Yelp
Delicious and interesting pizzas. The back deck is very pleasant. Don't mind the quirky ordering experience - seems efficient!

Yelp
Love this spot for pizza and a view! The servers were are delightful and the pizza was delicious. We sat outside one evening and watched ducks, geese, swans and a heron go by. Their hours are sparse but here's hoping they do well and expand them!

Dotti E.

Yelp
Delicious food! And - They are learning what works for them and their customers. They started out requesting payment, including tip, at the time of ordering. That didn't sit right with me, and I assume lots of other customers, because when we went back a week or so later, a tip jar was at the counter, where we could provide "feedback" after our meals, which were delicious! Great pizza and specials! We had the salmon special and scallop special. Both wonderful. Gets very busy on weekends. Go early or not on weekends!

J B.

Yelp
I have been here 4x. I love everything about it. The staff. The view. The food. It is pricey, but I rather pay for quality than quantity.

Guila S.

Yelp
Best pizza hands down in all of Jersey !! The taste and texture of the pizza is spot on and the salads are so creative and delicious. Beautiful spot and delicious food . Would definitely recommend !

Yelp
Simply put, Catbird is a triumph. Beautifully restored and enhanced inside and the new deck overlooking the lake is handsomely yet simply done. I think of this as a continuation and expansion of everything that made Medusa Stone Fired Kitchen such a treat. You should go.

Amanda C.

Yelp
So so good and fresh. It's BYOB and the pizza is amazing I can't wait to go back. Also don't sleep on their specials -- the mussels were fantastic. Loved being able to check out the cute ducks & swans from our table too

Romolo M.

Yelp
The food was terrific, and the service was excellent. It's well worth a visit. Catbird has an excellent selection of non-alcoholic cocktails.

Mary Anne G.

Yelp
Clever process to order food Really good pizza Love the casual outdoor seating trained and engaged staff

Wendy C.

Yelp
What a fabulous find! Right on the outskirts of town is this gem of a "pizzeria". We shared two delicious pies made with fresh ingredients on perfect charred wood fired crusts. And a fresh perfectly dressed simple salad. The staff was extremely friendly and the setting on the lake is lovely. We ate outside at dusk and watched the flock of ducks return home for the evening while savoring our meal.

Yelp
Everything was perfect. We arrived at the restaurant on a gorgeous Thursday evening. There was a bit of a wait for outside seating, however due to the restaurant being a byob we were able to enjoy a drink on the benches out front while we waited for our table to be ready. This restaurant is unique in that you order and pay before you are seated which we liked. Our food arrived and we could not have been more pleased. The pizza is some of the best we ever tasted. The atmosphere is lovely ( we watched the sunset on Deal Lake as we ate our meals ) and the service was great. We will put this restaurant in our regular rotation!

Alma Z.

Yelp
Great service and good food! Didn't give it 5 starts only because the shrimp was overcooked but with the other seafood was yummy.

Mark C.

Yelp
EXCELLENT PIZZA AND BEYOND!!! I was determined to get to Catbird before the Memorial Day Weekend rush. It was an outstanding experience. Their protocol: Order when are called (if there is a wait)-Pay and tip for the order- then get escorted to your table with a unique marker. My Friend and I ordered their in-house sourdough bread and an order of olives to start. His pizza was the mushroom specialty pizza (white) and mine was the margarita pizza with two toppings. We also brought along our own BYOB. The staff was pleasant and friendly. The owner was dutifully at the pizza oven for almost the entire time we were there. Service was perfect. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CATBIRD ON SUNSET AVENUE IN ASBURY PARK! You will not be disappointed in the least!

Chris M.

Yelp
Simple menu and great wood fired pizza. We were lucky enough to get an outdoor seat and had a nice dinner. Staff is really friendly and as another note it's BYOB. Definitely recommend giving it a try

L F.

Yelp
Food was great and absolutely delicious. Staff was very pleasant but it did take a long time for the pizza to come out. Ordering is kind of weird. Why order at the register like you're in a fast food restaurant? it's definitely not fast food prices, so please have a server at the table. None of that is the reason for the 2 stars though. The restaurant itself is so unbelievably hot, that it's almost impossible to sit there. It must have been close to 100 degrees in there. I'm not exaggerating ....in fact I'm not doing it justice, how hot it was. Yku can't expect people to sit in their own sweat and try and enjoy a meal. It's crazy, I've never experienced anything like it. I've gone to many pizza oven places and I've never seen an issue with keeping your eat-in customers comfortable.

Kathleen O.

Yelp
The food is as excellent as Medusa! The staff is lovely. However, you must wait in line outside the restaurant until you are called inside to a front counter where you must order and pay upfront. What will they do if when it's pouring or freezing in the winter? I'm very disappointed with the process. I find it rude. **

Jocelyn G.

Yelp
Wonderful addition to Asbury Park! We really missed Medusa and are so excited about the return in the form of Catbird. The renovated space sitting on Deal Lake makes for scenic dining. The wood fired pizza , arugula salad, and mini chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches make for a superb dining experience.

Yelp
missed Medusa but the wait for reinvented and enhanced food worth it. have always enjoyed the location , service and friendly faces top notch
