The 20 Best Restaurants In San Juan, Puerto Rico - San Juan - The Infatuation

"A Saturday night getting wine drunk over some artistically plated mackerel is easy at Celeste—a spot that happens to be the most memorable dinner you’ll have in San Juan. Celeste defines itself as a seafood and wine bar, only open from Friday to Monday, but that’s just the dry resume of this place. It’s the perfect median between a laid-back night out with a glass of velvety merlot and an indulgent multicourse dinner tailored for the self-proclaimed epicurean. They serve seasonal sharing plates that are Puerto Rican at their core, with South American, East Asian, and Caribbean influences. You might have curly tentacles swimming in a spicy chorizo sauce, outstanding crudo, and glistening skewers of beef brisket you can gobble down without feeling self-conscious about your fork-and-knife etiquette." - adriana silva, tiffany yannetta, mariana trabanino

Celeste - Review - Old San Juan - San Juan - The Infatuation

"Celeste defines itself as a seafood and wine bar, only open from Friday to Monday, but that’s just the dry resume of this place. The restaurant is the perfect median between a laid-back night out with a glass of velvety merlot and an indulgent multicourse dinner tailored for the self-proclaimed epicurean. A Saturday night getting wine drunk over some artistically plated mackerel is easy at Celeste—a spot that happens to be the most memorable dinner you’ll have in San Juan. photo credit: Ivana Rizik This spot serves seasonal sharing plates that are Puerto Rican at their core, with South American, East Asian, and Caribbean influences. You might have curly tentacles swimming in a spicy chorizo sauce, outstanding crudo, and glistening skewers of beef brisket you can gobble down without feeling self-conscious about your fork-and-knife etiquette. The white tablecloths suggest a serious evening—until you notice the table nearby tossing back pitorro shots from a bottle of Don Q, or a server in a camo hat and the Nike low-dunks you’ve been eyeing, who won’t try to push the $196 bottle of Gravner off the “extra special reserve” menu. Admit you spent too much at Plaza Las Américas, and they’ll assure you that the $65 bottle of white wine is just as good. With tastefully cluttered walls of double-headed lizards and other abstract paintings, Celeste will make you want to linger past dessert. If you’re still feeling the buzz from the wine and the incredible meal you just had, pop into the bar La Parroquia next door and continue the happy streak with a karaoke night cap—you’ll likely find the crew who was sitting next to you at Celeste doing the same. Food Rundown The menu at Celeste changes frequently, but here are a few examples of the types of dishes you might find. Filipino Crudo With Hontaka Chili, Cucumber Sawsawan, And Garlic Chicharrones The chicharron crumble on top is what sets this crudo apart from every crudo you’ve encountered in your life. It eats like pork granola and adds a wonderful crunch to the gelatinous slivers of fish. Crispy Coconut Shrimp With Polynesian Pearl Sauce It’s the familial sweet taste of coconut shrimp, but lathered in sauce that gives it a lovely tang. The sauce entirely coats each shrimp, which still maintains a crunch. Reef Octopus “Arrachera” With Chorizo Chili Crisp And Roasted Ají De Papaya Inspired by the smoky flavors of skirt steak, this octopus has a crisp char at the tips of the tentacles. The deep red chorizo chili crisp is as spicy and rich as it looks, and we’d like to have several jars of it on hand to plop on all our meals moving forward. Beef Brisket Niku Dango With Roasted Peanuts, Miso Caramel And Dulce De Chayote They really nail the sweet and savory combination at Celeste. A nutty example of this is in these tender beef skewers that are doused in a miso caramel sauce. The real kicker here are the candied bits of chayote we didn’t know could taste this incredible with meat." - Mariana Trabanino

The 26 Best Restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico | Eater

"Seafood bar meets wine bar at Celeste in Puerta de Tierra, an area nestled between Old San Juan and Condado. Chef and proprietor Sebastián Martínez Tully prepares elegant dishes inspired by Puerto Rico’s bounty. The menu changes quarterly but it always starts with a selection of crudos such as squid ink ceviche or aged tuna with Meyer lemon, followed by items like tamarind brown butter anchovy toast or grilled sepia. The carefully curated wines come from small wineries." - Paulina Salach Antonetti

Romantic, eclectic, creative, and cool. This place had so many seafood options and all of them came in a wholly innovative package. Each dish had flavors that lit up tastebuds all over your tongue with sour, sweet, umami, and savory. The art on the walls is quirky and fun, the music is atmospheric, the servers are in dreadlocks and unironic trucker hats, and the vibe is consistent. Our Syrah was excellent too. This was such a great dining experience and I would definitely come again.

Google
My favorite restaurant in Puerto Rico! They change their offerings every two months, showcasing an eclectic menu always. This restaurant is for the curious, fun, and adventurous palate. Great wine selections too!

One of the best dinners I’ve had. The attention to detail, the service and the elegant but laid back atmosphere all create a unique and authentic experience. The food was amazing! Wine selection 10/10. So happy

Google
This is absolutely one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. A must try if you’re in San Juan. The food is so delicious and creative, like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The fish is fresh every single night and the team that curates and cooks every meal is amazing, so attentive to the guests, your experience and feedback. Couldn’t recommend more! Also, you’re eating in a beautiful art gallery. 10/10 experience

After a year of drooling over every single picture that Celeste's team posts on social media, my family and I finally got to experience their heartfelt hospitality and boundless culinary talent. Blown away doesn’t even describe how we felt during our meal. There were tears of joy. There was a range of guttural noises and gasps between forkfuls. There were flavors I want to relive every day, forever (sadly, we live hundreds of miles away). The atmosphere is intimate yet elevated; a perfect balance between comfort and experience. Diners are surrounded by an eclectic composition of music and art, and are served masterpieces on a plate. Our lineup was one spectacular dish after another, highlighting the freshest local ingredients, and daring our tastebuds with every bite: * Bone marrow whipped with Canadian maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and topped with fried green shiso leaves. Picatostes on the side for scooping. 🤤🫠 * King salmon crudo with twice-fried shallots and pistachio oil in a tandoori guava sauce. 🔥 * Berberechos (cockles) with lime, watermelon radish, pink celery, and red peppers. Tears were shed. 🥲 * Blackfin tuna crudo drizzled with fermented mango honey and topped with flaky sea salt and Thai basil. ☠️ * Yellowfin tuna crudo with Meyer lemon, fried capers, and caper leaves. 🌟 * Dorado with sweet green melon, lulo juice, cured cucumber, white onion, coriander seed, and cilantro oil. 💚 * Cardinal prawns a la plancha with Old Bay, fresh herbs, and garlic oil. 🦐 * Tuna and swordfish flautas. 😍 * Quail with pink celery under whipped escabeche and a marsala glaze. 💛 A second stomach would have been a gift at this point, but we couldn't leave without tasting the incredible milhojas (super reminiscent of a Mexican cajeta, especially the one from the tragically closed Cielito Lindo in Condado), and the delectable knefe, a perfect nod to the Levantine treat. ✨ A trip to Puerto Rico would be incomplete without visiting Celeste. I can’t wait to see what they cook up next. 🩵

Google
Creative cuisine with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their dish creations are especially divine. The place is beautiful with a very pleasant atmosphere. They have very good wines and they guide you during dinner to pair the dishes with the wine that best suits them. The service is top and each and every one of the staff knows the product served in the restaurant, which makes it a special dinner due to the first-class attention you receive when you are there. Thanks!🧡

Google
lovely service — we loved our waitress. but food was really good and normal… not anything i would come back for. what we ordered like it was missing something (usually acid or heat) for how expensive the menu is

Google
What a restaurant! Great atmosphere, fresh food, locally sourced ingredients, and great wine selection. The tomato, the tuna, the lamb, the fish, the desert, all exceeded expectations. Owner and staff were very welcoming and made sure we had a 5 star experience. Reservations are required, we appreciate it because it made for a quiet and intimate environment. We will be sure to make another reservation next time we are in San Juan.

Yelp
This little restaurant feels like stepping into a trendy Lower East Side spot in Manhattan. It's quite small, with only about eight tables, so reservations are highly recommended. We were excited to give it a try, and it did not disappoint. Here's what we ordered: Braised Crab Croquettes with corn and coconut cream sauce Ceviche Crispy Ribs with Tahitian lime glaze and sea salt Daily Catch featuring aji nuoc cham, lemongrass, ginger, and crispy noodles Everything was incredibly fresh, creative, and packed with bold, unexpected fusion flavors. It's hard to put into words the depth of these flavors and how beautifully they layer together. The chef masterfully combines ingredients and techniques from various cuisines, including Peruvian, Thai, Chinese, and more, to create dishes that feel like a culinary journey. The wine suggested was also really good. This dining experience was like walking through a food museum--stimulating all the senses with its taste, aroma, and stunning presentation. Words don't do it justice; you just have to experience it yourself. We'll definitely be returning on our next visit!

Yelp
When in Puerto Rico do not miss this hidden gem. The service is phenomenal they want to curate a heavenly dining experience. The food is beyond compare. Their seafood dishes are creative, locally sourced and a step above the norm. The dining room has beautiful local art that represents the creativity of the Puerto Ricans.

Yelp
Wonderful crab cakes and pork chop. Took pictures after we woofed em. Also. Celebrity in attendance. This is another awesome place in San Juan. Check it out.

Yelp
The food was so good it should have been a sin to eat! We almost ordered the entire menu! The food was absolutely amazing. We had a crab cake we felt like they should have charged us $100 for because it was that good!! The dishes were unique and made eating a true experience! I can't hype it up enough.

Yelp
Tucked away and unassuming, Celeste offers an amazing food experience. This intimate restaurant has about 8 tables and appears to seat no more than 20 people. The diners are mixed from clearly dressed up to folks in shorts and sneakers (aka my outfit that night). Celeste welcomed us all. The menu is broken into sections our waiter (I believe his name was Derek) recommended 4-6 dishes for 2 people. We started off by ordering 3 and added more later. I never felt rushed or pressured to leave. A wine advisor approached our table without us even asking and offered advice on the wine. Of course it was no surprise that even the wine was perfect. Celeste does anticipating their diners needs very well. The food came out very quickly and every last dish was a hit. Not pictured is their foie gras dish. It's a must order. We ate it immediately and wished for more. Thanks Celeste for making this girl's vacation.

Yelp
Insanely overpriced. No vegetables on the menu. For $40+ you get an over spiced fish or greasy pork chop. No salad, vegetable, or rice. We spent well over $100 and left hungry.

Yelp
Two of us dined in on a quiet weeknight evening. We were greeted warmly and each server was consistent in checking in, providing advice on food and wine selections, and timing wine glass replenishment and courses appropriately without rush. We shared duck liver mousse with honey toast and pickled pineapple and endive, crab cake with wagyu bone marrow and butter, causa de pesca with golden beet, and rabbit schnitzel with carrots and mustard seed. Each bite brought a smile to our faces and we were constantly exchanging "wow"s throughout our meal. Highly recommend for those seeking an exceptional culinary experience!

Yelp
Celeste was fantastic - terrific and unique food for Puerto Rico, attentive staff, and a superb wine selection. I appreciated the intimate space; it was refined but casual. I would highly recommend it for your next trip and I look forward to returning!

Yelp
The best meal I have had in this trip to Puerto Rico. They change their menu every three months and have the most ingenious use of local ingredients. Seafood dishes were particularly amazing! Good wine selection but not a deep bench of cocktails.

Yelp
Celeste is a gem. Totally unpretentious, they simply do everything well. Lovely space, cordial and efficient personnel, quality ingredients, masterful prep & presentation. Front to back, these folks are rocking it.

Yelp
This might be the best restaurant in Puerto Rico right now. Born and raised puerto rican here who loves all things food, from the tiny rinconcitos selling alcapurrias, to the fancy ones with overpriced wines hehehe. This place blows your mind. Simple, limited menu full of big flavors. The crudo and the salad were to die for, but THAT BANANA dish was something else, I can't even describe it, sweet, umami and salty in a bowl

Yelp
East Village-style creative cuisine in San Juan! Delicious, fresh seafood-forward and tapas-heavy menu paired with a phenomenal selection of wines. Beautiful, renovated venue pays tribute to San Juan's glorious past while helping to reinvigorate one of its long forgotten neighborhoods. Cheers to our wonderful servicers and friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable front of the house, Sebastian.

Yelp
This place blew my mind. Atmosphere is cozy and intimate. Staff is ON TOP OF IT. Best service I've had in awhile. They all work together and work together really well. Now the food, let's start by stating that I'd come back to Puerto Rico just to eat here again. We started with the crudo, which was absolutely delicious! It melts in your mouth and the olive oil that came with it was so tasty. Then we had the clams, they were great, the bread hiding at the bottom in the sauce was the best, bread should always be at the bottom, how come I've never had it serve like this before? Life hack. Then we had the swordfish meatballs which were delicious, the texture the taste all was amazing. We then had the langoustinas, they were delicious as well and super big! To cleanse before deserts, we got the tiger salad which to my surprise, was one of my favorite, the flavors were so fresh and blended super well all together. To end it on a sweet note, we got the pineapple upside down carrot cake which was AMAZING! We didn't want to leave without trying their sweets side and both of us aren't much into carrot cake... But we finished it all and wanted more!

Yelp
Very good food. Seafood dishes were all very good. Was there on a not so busy night. Bartender was very nice.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. The food was inventive and yet very welcoming. We shared the bacala, sardines and the mushroom rice and each one was delicious although the rice was amazing. The plates are tapas size and 3 felt perfect to fill us up but not make it too heavy. We saved room for the cool and refreshing coconut sorbet with coconut cream. So good. The wines were lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful with suggestions. This is a must go place for some of the best food you will find in San Juan.

Donato A.

Yelp
The food was expensive for what it was, particularly because it is noisy with no ambiance. The service was ok, but they should be more attentive to the tables.

Yelp
Feeling "had" during a dining experience is my biggest pet peeve . I can forgive many a sin of seasoning and service if I feel like the house is giving it their best and not trying to to be overly slick in some element of service . Celeste unfortunately did just that. The food , at least what I tried, did not meet the price tag. Both items: the grilled sepia special and the salt and pepper shrimp were overly salted. I will say the shrimp were fried to perfection but I had to take every bite with a swish of water to temper the salinity. The suspiro of dulce de leche, coconut and passion fruit , which might rotate ( not sure) was exceptional but not enough to save the night. My biggest gripe was with the service which while peppered with one thoughtful exchange with whom I presume is either the head chef or owner, was nonetheless lacking. My biggest annoyance was the lack of a wine list / evenly distributed wine knowledge amongst the servers. I couldn't make out if there was a designated sommelier among the staff but if you dine at the bar , the hodgepodge of servers you encounter doesn't seem to include one which feels like a giant oversight at a wine bar. The wines I had were delicious but not enough to justify a return visit . I left feeling like the enterprise was very taken with itself in terms of concept but not so much execution .
