Cellar Dog - Review - Center City - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"People are being drawn to 15th and Spruce Street at all hours, and it has nothing to do with picking up Tums from CVS. It’s because of Cellar Dog, a bar and live music venue with moody lighting, a long beer list, and a massive circular bar in the middle where you can get a well-made old fashioned. The action happens while sitting at a pew near the stage—there’s jazz every night of the week (sometimes there’s a $5 cover)—or around the pool tables in the back (games are eight bucks an hour). Slink into a front-row seat, have a tête-à-tête with a basket of wings, or retreat to a corner with friends, a few beers, and the arcade games." - Candis R. McLean

Had a fantastic time here Thursday night. My nephew & I are in town celebrating his birthday and graduation. The band was fantastic. So nice to hear blues/jazz live in an era that rarely promotes this genre. The food was good bar food with added treats like fried oreos and root beer floats. The ambiance is great! Lots of games for entertainment. Enough privacy for a date night as well as friendliness to meet new people if that's what you're looking for. The bartender was friendly and quick to serve. Finally, want to say a special thank you and shout out to the security guard Alena. She was just doing her job extremely well and denied entry for my nephew being that he was under 21. He was clearly disappointed and just wanted to play pool and listen to the music. Alena went out of her way to speak with the manager about making an exception on a slower night and they let us in. Thank you Alena & manager for your hospitality and helping to make my nephew's birthday trip one to remember.

There is a 5.00 cover for each person and you must present photo ID upon entering the establishment. You will also get a hand stamp for your leisure to leave & reenter the establishment. The buffalo flavored wings were just okay, next time I'll try a different flavor hopefully for a better taste. They were although a nice size, I would recommend trying bbq. The bar service was pretty fast. The servers are very attentive and very fast with not having you for a drink. Listening to the live bands were pretty good. The music they play in between sets are good, only thing is it was hard to really hear the lyrics. Make sure you make reservations quickly if you want to get a table to play pool 🎱. At time's it can be a two hour wait. Overall this is a pretty good chill spot.

Cellar Dog is hands down one of the best bars I’ve been to in a long time. The live music was on point—great mix of feel-good tracks that kept the energy alive without overpowering conversation. The whole place just had this laid-back, good vibes atmosphere that made it easy to relax and have a great time. Shoutout to Dan the bartender—super friendly and genuinely welcoming. His positive energy was contagious and really added to the whole experience. It felt like everyone there was just in a great mood, and that’s definitely thanks to the awesome staff and the vibe they create. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun night out with great tunes, good people, and a warm, upbeat environment. I’ll definitely be back!

My boyfriend and I popped in for a happy hour/sips. We opened a tab, the bartender took our order for drinks and food. I asked for a glass of water at the same time and was told I can go to the water dispenser. I thought that was funny, considering the bartender was already making our drinks. Then after waiting for quite a while, I noticed other customers were getting their food before us. The security guard, I believe he said his name was T, noticed I kept checking for my food at the food window. He checked on my order and realized my food was never put in. He was able to put our food order in for us again. I then decided to order fried Oreos, and the same bartender told me I could order from the kiosk. I felt like that was a bit rude considering I already had a tab open with him. I ordered at the kiosk anyway so avoid confusion. The bar was not busy, but the bartenders seem to be overwhelmed. Thank goodness for T the security. The music was cool and the place was clean!

Eric the manager was amazing! I unfortunately have been on crutches for a few weeks, but wanted to celebrate my partners birthday at Cellar Dog. He went above and beyond to accommodate our group--and my crutches lol. Wings and Smash burger were tasty. The jazz performance was also top notch! Of course pool table was great, but plenty of other games/activities for everyone to have fun.

I visited Cellar Dog during happy hour. My bartender Stormy was incredible! She was so cheerful and attentive, she even brought me over another round to the pool tables when she saw I was out of my drink. A great atmosphere and the happy hour deals are excellent.

I've been here twice and for the most part really enjoyed it, but I had a really weird experience here last night and I don't think I'll be back. Partly bc I don't know if I'm banned or not lol. Long story short, apparently some drunk guy threw his beer bottle at one of the pool tables because he couldn't play 2v2s and I got framed for it. I dont know when or where that happened. I didn't see anything happen, I was playing at table 8 with a friend for about 2 hours. But when I went to close out our pool tab and switch to chess, a bouncer pulled me aside and told me I was the culprit and I needed to close out and leave. I was so confused like huh I did what 🤨 lmao??? Overall, he was pretty polite about it, but when we assured him it wasn't me and that he can check the cameras, he just wasn't hearing it. So it kinda sucks to spend like $100+ somewhere and then get kicked out without verifying they got the right guy. Totally understand throwing someone out for something like that, but it actually wasn't me. I know there's a lot of white dudes with mullets and mustaches out here these days but dang lol. All in all, great live music, decent drinks, great selection of games, and a ton of pool tables so you're not really waiting long for a game. Service is pretty nice, but dont be in the wrong place at the wrong time I guess? Haven't tried the food so I can't really speak to that. I enjoy the spot but yeah overall I feel weird going back now.

Google
So much potential yet so much failure. $5 cover, $8 a person per hour to place a game. You’re talking about $32 for an hour to play some pool or shuffle board? After paying $20 for 4 people to get in? $52 for an hour for 4 people to play pool? Who do they think they are?

Yelp
This was a very unique spot. My favorite part was how spacious it was. We had plenty of room to play pool and mingle on a Saturday night. The food was cool- you order through a touch screen. My hit dog was NOT good, it was almost like sweet? But the mozz sticks were fab and my boyfriend enjoyed the burger. The lemon drop shots were phenomenal. The live band was a lovely touch as well!

Yelp
Really hard to decide whether 4 or 5 tbh. So I've been to the NYC location of Cellar dog before, very happy to see them open in Philly and a big upgrade over Howl at the Moon. It's a welcomed addition to the neighborhood and solves the pool table shortage in the area. I love playing elsewhere, like Good Dog or other nearby places, but when you really want to just lock in and play a billion games of pool it's amazing to have a table as long as you want. You can check the site but in addition to pool they have shuffleboard, Ping pong, board games and more. I got the food and found it to be really solid bar food (sloppy joe sliders and curly fries.....get me the TUMS STAT). MY ONLY not positive comment actually has to do with the Jazz. There's pretty much live jazz every night....which part of me finds that to be fun and awesome. The musicians were amazing and it does give a good vibe. But then there's a cover, it's only $5 - not the end of the world (I get it goes to the band as deserved), but sometimes I want to drink and play pool and not hear loud jazz music. Anyway, despite my petty complaining it's an awesome spot and I will be back many times lol.

Yelp
Cool new spot that features live jazz from some great musicians. They have some light food options and a pretty full bar. Prices are great too. Small cover charge to enter but you get full access to vibe to the music as well as a bunch of assorted bar games. Small charge per person for pool, shuffleboard, foosball, ping pong, and some other light table games. Really great addition and good for big groups, can see this being a nice spot to add for a fun night out with friends.

Yelp
Live Jazz music which you don't much see any more drink prices not to bad for the city, this bar is aspirational the best way my uncle George described it. Like really great bar food the inside was a melting pot of people specifically all age ranges. The service is great, the have pool tables, shuffle tables, ping pong and when live jazz isn't playing in they got some good music in rotation. Im coming back because its a great vibe.

Yelp
Jazz was great, bartender was cool. Beer and wine selection left a lot to be desired and the crowd was pretty obnoxious. My husband really wanted the hot dog but didn't get to try it.

Yelp
I haven't been to this venue since it was Howl at the Moon (RIP), but I always loved this huge space. I went with some friends right then they opened around 4:00 pm on a Thursday. It was empty (understandably for a weekday at 4pm) and the bartender was super attentive. I asked for a cocktail menu and she said they didn't have one. I would have easily ordered a higher-priced cocktail, but since I didn't want a basic well drink, I ordered a cheap beer. I would recommend creating a cocktail menu to entice people to order higher-priced drinks. We asked about ordering some food, but they said that the kitchen wouldn't be open until at least 5 pm. They have a ton of pool tables which was super exciting because I love pool. We were directed to a small closet area where an employee as in charge of renting out games/tables. To my surprise, a pool table rental was $8 per person per hour so for the four of us, it was going to be $32 for on hour. To me, that is INSANE. We asked about a happy hour deal since it was dead inside, and they said no. I mean, maybe if the tables are busy on the weekends, it could make sense, but when the place is absolutely dead? That seems ridiculous. My sister really wanted to play, so I paid it, but I felt like I got ripped off wholly. To play a board game was $2 per person per hour. My other friend was able to order wings and fries and, omg, they might have been the best french fries I have ever had. They were so crunchy and crisp and the dipping sauce was delicious. Overall, the vibe is great, I wish they had a cocktail menu, the fries were out of this world, and the pool is WAY OVERPRICED. I would go back, but I would not play games or pool.

Yelp
This place is a gem! The music is fantastic--live jazz, and it really sets the vibe. One of the coolest touches? They have church pews for seating! (Insider tip: bring a couple of stickers to add to the pews--they actually encourage it!). This is the old Howl at the moon spot. RIP but it's time had come. And I think they merged it with that 'club ' next door. There is a god to have put that place to bed. I met the manager, Nicole (I think that was her name), and she told me that the bar is named after a dog called Otis, which was funny because my dog's name is also Otis. That definitely made me smile. She was super cool, even asked for a picture of my dog, and put it up on some kind of "dog wall of fame." The food? Surprisingly really good. I'd call it elevated bar food--definitely something you can have for dinner, but also great for just snacking. Not greasy, not expensive. I didn't check the prices, but I had mozzarella sticks, a hot dog (of course!), and a fried Twinkie. Holy ... yeah. We played some pool, and Nicole let us try ping pong too. Maybe a little upsell move, but I respect the game. Overall, I love having a cool spot in Rittenhouse that isn't trying to be some prohibition-era speakeasy or a Cheesecake Factory. (Hint: it was actually clean.) The atmosphere felt homey--like it could totally become a regular hangout for me and my friends. I think there's a cover charge after a certain hour when the bands play, but we got there early and weren't charged when the band started. Another perk! The bartenders were friendly, and if you want to play pool, head to the middle of the room--there's a separate room with an attendant who can let you know if there's a waitlist or if you can just start playing. Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
Recently attended a work happy hour at Cellar Dog and it was SO MUCH FUN! What a great vibe and top tier service. We worked with the manager Nicolette to book and manage our reservation and she is an all-star. Super responsive, accommodating, and friendly. Big fan of this place and 10/10 would visit again.

Yelp
I am 24 years old and the scanner rejected my friends and my IDs. I flew with this same ID a week ago. It is a Real ID and the bouncer wouldn't even look at my passport card. The scanner is obviously not legit

Yelp
I truly enjoyed my time at Cellar Dog! It's a cute, non grungy or stinky dive bar that offers live jazz, a soulful and upbeat playlist (with all the hits when the band isn't playing) and excellent bar food. I love that it is pretty diverse environment with diverse and inclusive staff. Service was exceptional - especially the bartender Andrew who gave me really good advice on what to get. Andrew was amazing! I ordered the hot chicken sandwich and mozzarella sticks that were both 10/10. I especially loved the marinara sauce that tasted like tomato bisque. The chicken sandwich was truly special! I really hope I can order it for delivery one day because I'm hooked Last but not least, the Twinkie basically was a party in my mouth. It's everything I didn't know I needed! I look forward to frequenting this place again. Special shout outs again to the host, Andrew, the bar back and the chef that was holding it down in the kitchen. I enjoyed playing some of the games and look forward to testing out more games when I visit again.

Yelp
Big pool bar for center city. Jazz music and the general set up are both cool. Workers were all nice and enjoyed my time here. Would go back.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great service, love the Jazz music. I rarely review anything but this is by far one of the most chill places.
