"Chanon Thai typically draws a line out the door as diners patiently wait to sample the tom yum soup with prawns, som tum salad, and a wide selection of curries. The dining space is familiar and cozy, with a cork board featuring handwritten notes and drawings from loyal customers, and you may find yourself rubbing elbows with the likes of Alex Honnold and other elite athletes that frequent this neighborhood mainstay during training stints. The restaurant is well-known for its liberal application of Thai chilies to create deep layers of flavor and heat. Even a standard Thai restaurant dish like pad kee mao (thick noodles stir fried with broccoli, Thai basil, bell pepper, Thai chili, garlic, and soy) comes with a warning that spice can vary day to day depending on the batch of Thai chilies the restaurant receives. Save room for dessert; the mango with Thai custard and sweet sticky rice is the perfect end to a fiery meal." - Sarah Entwistle

I've traveled the world, dined in Michelin Star restaurants... And this is one of my favorite restaurants period. I sadly don't live in Utah anymore, so only get to dine here very rarely, but today was one of those opportunities. We were also able to bring our kids for the first time. The service, the friendliness, the quality of food, the flavor... It doesn't get better than this. I'm already dreaming of my next trip to Utah so I can come back. Magical restaurants do exist!

Best Thai food in Utah — and better than most places outside of Utah too. It’s a small, family-run restaurant that sometimes closes for the season so the owners can visit back home. The green curry is an absolute favorite.

Google
Wow, my new favorite Thai place in Salt Lake City. We had 4 entrees and they were all amazing. Customer service is top notch and so very friendly. We had the Satay and pork potsticker appetizers . For the meal we had Pad Preaw Wan / sweet and sour, Pad Prik Paow, Pad Siew, and Pad Kee Mao. Fantastic comes to mind. All of it. I highly recommend you give this place some dining time.

Google
Absolutely amazing food! We were sadly just passing thru SLC but I would be a regular if I could. Authentic flavors, authentic spicy. We really enjoyed our dinner tonight. Staff was lovely. We had the pot sticker, Tom kha prawns soup and the green curry spicy and the fried bananas with homemade coconut ice cream.

Google
This place is so cute! I think it's a family owned business and the owners are really nice. We tried the Tom yum and the pad Tai and it was really good. The tables are kind of squished together, but it gives off the family vibe I guess haha the building may look old, but they keep the place nice and the bathroom is really clean. There are random plants here and there and I really liked the atmosphere. Again, their food is amazing as well, so I'll definitely come back to try other menus.

I recently dined at a fantastic Thai restaurant that is locally owned and I couldn't be happier with my experience. From the moment I walked in the door, I was greeted with a warm smile and a welcoming atmosphere. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful, making sure to answer any questions I had about the menu and the various dishes. As for the food, it was absolutely delicious! I ordered a few items and they were cooked to perfection, with just the right balance of sweet and savory flavors. The portion size was generous and I left feeling completely satisfied. I also appreciated the attention to detail in the presentation of the dishes - they were all beautifully presented on the plate. Overall, I highly recommend this Thai restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic meal. The locally owned aspect is just an added bonus, as it's always great to support small businesses in the community. So, if you're in the area and in the mood for some delicious Thai cuisine, give this restaurant a try - you won't be disappointed!

Google
I called Chanon Thai when I was home, sick with the flu, and craving their chicken Tom Yum soup. They sent my husband home with a “flu recovery” pack that included the soup with extra veggies, sliced mango, citrus kombucha, and a brined concoction with limes, garlic, turmeric and chilis that would kill any virus. Chanon Thai is the best!!!

Gretel T.

Yelp
I love the people working at Chanon - they are so kind and helpful. When I went they also had some free donated bouquets of flowers for everyone to take home - I took some pink roses and it was so nice. I love Thai food for its balance of salty, sour, spicy, and sweet flavors. However, everything I tried at Chanon was too sweet for my taste. I went with a big group of people so got to try at least 5 different dishes. Nothing really stood out to me as exceptional. I do appreciate some menu items (duck, crab, etc.) that are more unique compare to its peers. I do think there are better Thai restaurants in the valley that have more refined flavors and focus on fresh ingredients.

Ciera K.

Yelp
Nothing terribly impressive about this place. Food was average, prices were on the high side for the quality, and visually this place is a mess for a sit down restaurant. Service was good though. There are much better Thai restaurants in the salt lake area to take your business to.

Carmen F.

Yelp
Love this place: don't ever change! The food and family are just the absolute best! Other places just don't taste as authentic. Everything super fresh and delicious. I hadn't been here for a while bc I was out of state, but when I went back I couldn't have been happier. I felt truly welcome. No matter how busy they get, they are always so kind.

Haley B.

Yelp
This place is a favorite of mine. I always go early because they get BUSY. Be prepared to wait if you go with a large group or you get there past 6. It's so worth it, though. The food is delicious. I've never had anything here that I haven't enjoyed.

Elf E.

Yelp
Sure, we come for the amazing food but, also, this place has, absolutely, the best people in the restaurant business. They aren't owners/employees/servers/cooks. They are family. It's just who they are to everyone. They treat us like guests in their own private homes and are the very sweetest family of people you will EVER find in ANY restaurant anywhere in the world. Very important to me- They use all the organics they possibly can. I appreciate that so much because it's critical for us to consume clean food not sprayed with chemicals. *I'm so NOT Thai. I'm a white kid from a small town in Wisconsin who never even tried it until moving out west. The great joy of Chanon Thai is the broad menu of things to order and absolutely NOTHING is mediocre. Every single dish is mind blowing, FULL of flavor, and just absurdly great. THEN, Bah hits us with the homemade coconut ice cream for the closer. Beyond ridiculous. Make sure you don't leave without ordering that to finalize your dining experience (until next time). I love you all so very much and it's souls like all of you who make SLC and the world a better place. Thanks for always making us feel welcome and thanks for always putting so much love into your craft. It makes all the difference in the world. Oh, and, if they have some, pick up a Kombucha on your way out. Natnicha (little sister) makes the very best organic kombucha you will ever taste in your life. It's truly extraordinary.

Yelp
I am more about Mexican restaurant or my favorite halibut place, or Olive Garden, but not much for Thai. Until today. It was the last day My grandson was going to be here. He's now on a trip to Alaska to work and he wanted to take me to this restaurant. He said when he lived on fourth E. that he went there at least 2 to 3 times a week. He ordered yellow curry and I ordered an appetizer plate. I frankly do not know how they make that chicken on a stick taste so incredibly delicious and the texture is just awesome. And the shrimp tempura is a shrimp lovers dream .! The cheese wontons were different than I've ever had, they were tempura coated, they were just awesome. The gyozos we as expected , very good and the eggrolls wonderful it also came with a salad, and I had the peanut sauce on it, very good But the find in all this were the two darling waitresses ! just a joy, friendly warm, and to me the most important thing about any restaurant!!! thank you both for a very, very enjoyable meal! Please try this restaurant, a very local one and if you're not a big fan of Thai and your partner is go there, you will be wonderfully surprised :-)

Lauren K.

Yelp
Along Harvey Milk, you'll find this always busy neighborhood favorite. It's small and they do a lot of take-out, so be prepared to wait. It's worth it. We visited this week on a tip from a local. So glad we did! Everything seems delicious. My stand outs are the Pad Thai seafood, Thom Ka, and spicy fish. The plates are healing with flavor and the portions are big. They have alcohol as well as Thai tea and sodas. The service is top notch here. Everyone is welcome. There is much more you could want in the friendly city of Salt Lake. See website for hours, location and menu.

Jason M.

Yelp
The food is really good. However, I'd you order takeout in person be prepared to wait WAY too long. They seem pretty disorganized. Sadly, is rate the service, "one star," but the food, "five stars."

Tony J.

Yelp
All my reviews are just reminders to myself. Best Thai restaurant I've been to yet!! Must go again if i ever go back to Utah. Suggestions of which sauces to use by the owner? made each dish even better. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Som tum - papaya salad that is done very well. Feels fresh and the seasoning was just perfect. Lard naa - savory dish that is on the saucy side, had some smoky flavor to it similar to wok hai in chinese cooking, adding the suggested clear condiment (i don't know what it was exactly) made it twice as good, Gang dang - a curry with depth to it, had rich taste without it being heavy, mild is really mild so go medium Mango and thai custard with sticky rice - the custard tastes like when i stream eggs mixed with milk/condensed milk but with pandan added to it, sticky rice perfectly fine with mellow sweetness, mango is mango

Joycelyn C.

Yelp
Chanon Thai still stands as the best Thai spot we've tried! Their Num Tok is second to none! We love Chanon Thai!

Joanne V.

Yelp
This is the best Thai restaurant in all of SLC!! Their service is spectacular as well. Immediately upon entering, the servers treat you like family and really makes the whole experience feel homey. It's as if they invited you into their home and cooked you a great meal. Can't recommend coming here enough. Their food was also very very good. We ordered the duck curry, which is probably the best duck curry I've had. There was good amounts of duck meat and the flavors were great. We also really enjoyed their drunken noodle! All around great experience! Definitely will take my out of town friends here. :)

Cathy J.

Yelp
You know it's a good sign when you walk in the door and hear Thai coming from every corner of the restaurant - from both the diners and the staff. Everything from the flavors, to the presentation, to the warmth of the service made us feel like we were sitting down to an authentic and wholesome meal in someone's home in Thailand. The lunch special portions were great, and they even refilled our rice automatically when they noticed we were running low. The menu is also extremely vegan friendly. Recommend the pad puck, pad kee mao, panang curry, and tbh probably just everything!

Helene D.

Yelp
Authentic Thai food with wholesome service and ambience. One of the best calamari I've tried. Tom Yum soup was amazing. You can add more chili pepper on the side. Comfort food at its best.

Annie H.

Yelp
This is our favorite Thai place in the valley. I have never had a bad meal here. I recommend the waterfall salad (Num tok). It is perfection and the flavors are bright and fresh. I have had waterfall salad at a number of places and Chanon has the best. Their Mango Sticky rice is also my favorite I have had a round. The flavor and texture is perfect and I liked it served warm. We have also tried many of the curries to our delight. One of my favorite Thai dishes is The Tom Kha soup and the one here is perfection. The fresh lime juice is something you don't want to pass up. It is almost in the vein of a Brazilian Limeade. The service is quick and friendly and the staff are happy to make suggestions.

M J.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food! Very fresh and generous portions. Super friendly staff. It's like being invited over to a neighborhood party.

Rita P.

Yelp
Authentic Thai cuisine with out being salty and extremely good service. Very reasonable prices. Portions on the large size. The tables are small and close together. Hot in the summer so I recommend take out. Clearly they spend their money in the fresh food rather than the setting. Absolutely worth it! My new favorite Thai place in Salt Lake City!

Terrence C.

Yelp
I went to eat dinner here and they were too busy to acknowledge I came into the restaurant. Therefore I have no idea how the food is, they were busy but lacked the ability to manage the restaurant and let people know expected wait times or take to go orders. The restaurant is small and it was very load when I was waiting to talk with a hostess or someone. They had a sheet for you to put your name on to get in line but it was not very clear. I may try to go here again but most likely not.

Ella H.

Yelp
Chanon Thai is the best Thai restaurant in salt lake. It is also one of the best restaurants in general that I've ever been to. I am a regular at this place, and always get the green curry with chicken. It is so delicious and so clean! I always feel so good after eating here. I will protect this place with my life forever. The cute ladies who own/work at the restaurant are so sweet and so good at what they do. 10000000/10! Do yourself a favor and start visiting regularly. It feels so good to support such an amazing, authentic, small business.

Jennet C.

Yelp
Ok I just have to say that this is probably the best Thai food you will find in the city! The owners are incredible people and the service has always been great. If you live around liberty park you will for sure turn into one of their regulars. I love the family vibe and the laid back ambiance! They serve their food on regular dishes, so you really feel like you are getting a home cooked meal! Now for the food! It's incredible! If you are looking for an authentic Thai taste this is definitely your place. Everyone I bring to Chanon Thai has only had good things to say.

Brittany K.

Yelp
Best Thai food in Utah in my experience (i was visiting and only came to this place haha) I can tell it's home cooked, the owners and workers seemed to all be family, the chef came out and was eating with family members. It felt like we were intruding on a family dinner in the restaurant but somehow felt welcome at the same time. The food was just, muah. Ordered the papaya salad which is known to be spicy, but this was SPI-CEEE- so beware. But it was so good, i also got some skewers which were full of flavor and filling.

Dane F.

Yelp
The food is excellent and the service is very good. We came just as they were closing, but they opened up for us. You should try their homemade kombucha!

Monique S.

Yelp
My favorite yellow curry in salt lake! The inside is small but worth the wait. Or you can always easily order to go!

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Solid home style Thai. The larb chicken is the best that I've had; juicy, flavorful and served with fresh veggies. This place does get busy. Our takeout order took about an hour so I'd definitely recommend placing your order online well ahead of time.

Samuel O.

Yelp
This place has some great food ! No doubt we decided to try something new & as always trying new places to eat is always challenging weather to see if it's going to be good or bad so here's my review. Pros: Great amazing food , so many choices to choose from , service is good too they are really friendly & always asking if you need something . Overall a great vibe & friendly home style food , it was our first time trying Thai food & we loved it! CONS: If your planning to dine in expect to wait a little longer they get really busy here and it seems little they also do take out orders , food delivery services therefor there's only one person taking orders. Other thing is place is clean but just enough , the tables were a little sticky & the chairs felt super loose Besides that it's a great place to try out !

John H.

Yelp
Great Thai food in an enjoyable casual dining environment. We came just after 5:30 on a Sun night and were able to get seated right away. Interesting experience as it seemed the owners kids were the "hosts" seating us, providing menus and getting us water. Pretty funny. My son went with the Pad Kee Mao ($11) with drunken noodles and really enjoyed it. I ordered the Gang Keow Wan/Green Curry ($11) and it was excellent. Generously loaded with chicken. The place was hopping with people dining in as well as take out orders - so it was a little slow as a result. Service was very friendly. We would definitely come back again!

Sorawit I.

Yelp
Best Thai Restaurant in town. Good Food & Great Service. Highly recommended!!! My favorite dish is on number 48 : Eggplant with shrimp

Jessie W.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in here on a whim and we are so glad we did! It appears to be a family run business, a bit of a dive atmosphere inside (they also have outdoor seating), but that only adds to the charm. We sat in a corner filled with plants of all shapes and sizes accompanied by a card that explains the owner rehabilitates the plants on the brink of death and then sells them for charity - love it! As for the food, the Tom Yum was fabulous, chock full of veggies, as was both curries that we tried. The service was quick and friendly, we even ordered more to go!

Janice L.

Yelp
Hands down, my favorite place for Thai food in the Salt Lake Valley. I've only visited a handful of times, but every time that I do go, I am just blown away by the depth of flavor that their dishes hold. The people who work there are so genuinely kind, caring, and attentive. I have tried the pad thai, curries, stir fry, and papaya salad dishes. All of the ingredients are very fresh ! Endless options for vegans and vegetarians. I love that they have spice levels (mild, medium, hot, 1-10). I've asked for a 7 before and it did not disappoint.

Blanca F.

Yelp
Excellent! We ordered potsticks, papaya salad, red curry , noodle soup and fried banana and coconut ice cream for dessert. Everything was so delicious!

Jack T.

Yelp
Hands down the most authentic Thai curry in town. This little locally owned business is a great spot to get weekday takeaway and it's really the only Thai restaurant in SLC that will hit a real spice level.

Rachel F.

Yelp
Tonight's order from Chanon really disappointed. The Guya-Teaw Pad Kee Mao (#28) had literally no sauce on it or flavor at all and was way more noodles than vegetables. The Pad Thai (#25) also seemed to lack sauce and flavor. This was not our experience last time so we were surprised. Will try again and hope this was just a fluke.

Hadley H.

Yelp
Hands down best Thai place in SLC! I've tried many while living here and this is the best bang for your buck. You get tons of great food for a great price. Plus the staff is awesome, involved in the community, and tries to reduce their waste by reusing boxes, not providing silverware unless needed. They are great and their food is great! Also don't forget to grab some homemade kombucha! My personal fav is the massaman curry, I get this at least once a month!

Christopher L.

Yelp
I have had Thai food from all over the valley. This place is better than all of them in all the ways that matter. I have not seen any other thai place in this valley that serves Nam Sod.

Christian B.

Yelp
Have only ever heard good things. We ordered Drunken Noodles, Massaman, Egg Rolls, Potstickers and Thai Tea. Our meal was excellent. Flavorful, filling, and hot!! We are used to spicy foods, but Chanon does a number on your tastebuds. Even a 2 on their scale is almost uncomfortably spicy, still worth it :-) The biggest downside was that they completely forgot the noodles for my Drunken Noodles so it was basically just a veggie stir-fry. Delicious, but I wish I could have a do-over to get what we actually paid for. Biggest bonus/surprise was the bouquet of free, beautiful flowers they gave us with the order. It was a lovely and fragrant addition!

Priya A.

Yelp
This thai place used to be great when I used to come here years and years ago and I am happy to report that this is still the case. It used to remind me of having dinner with family with mismatched dishes and kids artwork and it was lovely to see the same essence after so many years. The place was busy as you can see phones ringing and people coming for take out orders. There was one person handling the phones and the tables so it seemed a bit chaotic but she always had a smile on her face and was gracious. We ordered the food but our toddler was hungry so they got her some rice and peanut sauce so I can start feeding her. Our food was great, My fav was Massaman curry. The panang curry was good too. They gave us a lot of rice with the curry and we had to ask them to just give us half of that as we were sure we would not be able to eat so much rice.. They kept on checking in on us to make sure we had enough rice. at the end of the meal, they asked if we would like a sample of their passion fruit and raspberry kombucha. They gave us a small cup with kombucha. our toddler surprisingly liked it. When they saw her drink the kombucha, they gave us a full glass to go for the next day. By the time we were done with our dinner, we were the only ones in the restaurant and the chef and the family was out having their own dinner and interacting with us. It is truly family owned and operated and it is heartwarming to see them run this business.

Daisy R.

Yelp
Ordered takeout for the first time from Chanon. Always wanted to give them a try, so we figured it would be a nice break from the Thanksgiving leftovers. Sadly, I was not very impressed. Eerie feeling when I walked in to pick up the food, very disorganized and frantic, guess cause it was a busy night? Other patrons awkwardly sitting around waiting for their takeout as well. The owners children were running around and screaming... Food was ok. My husband and son said theirs was good. I got green curry, usually one of my favorites. I like spicy, so I got medium. Good heat level, but it didn't taste like anything, if that makes sense, it was just hot....oh well, back to Thanksgiving leftovers....

Callie S.

Yelp
So delicious! Perfect for a vegetarian and spicy food fan :) I ordered the tofu larb, papaya salad, and we had spring rolls for the table. All fantastic!!

Rob H.

Yelp
This place is just amazing. I love the food and especially the mismatched plates and dishes. I've never had a bad meal here.

Josh S.

Yelp
Wow was this incredible. A flavor punch with every bite! The homemade kombucha was a delight and BBY at the best I've had. Beef salad Papaya salad Yellow chicken curry Fig blueberry orangezest kombucha

Baylee T.

Yelp
Such a great Thai restaurant! They are also amazing at catering to gluten free as well which is so hard to find in any Asian cuisine. Great takeout and dine in alike and everyone is always happy to see you.

Lane E.

Yelp
Chanon Thai cafe is a must try if you are in the Salt Lake area. While the place is fairly small (reminded me more of an ice cream shop), the food was absolutely flavorful. It had all the traditional Thai flavors you would expect and it did not dissapoint. The chicken pad thai was plentiful and the protein was moist. The panang curry with beef had an amazing kick to it! There are three levels of spiciness from low, medium, and high. We came at a busy time and while the waiters were attentive it was hard to ask them for a refill of water and more napkins. Wasn't sure who our waiter was because they were all running around. Definitely would come back again when I am craving thai food.

Branson S.

Yelp
Food was incredible and had a great atmosphere. The service was great as well, you can tell the workers take pride in their food and pour their heart into it! Water never went empty and they were very attentive.

Morgan H.

Yelp
Second time here. Still really good! Calamari was a curve ball when it turned out to be Octopus!! Sauce was great, Octopus wasn't that good. Not sure how that got by.

Julie E.

Yelp
Staff is beyond incredible. 5 stars for customer service and friendly service. Ambiance is eclectic and enjoy the outdoor dining. Can be a bit too sunny with limited shad options. I like my Thai with more sauce. Felt a bit bland. Meats were tender and cooked well.

Pandy F.

Yelp
The people commending the pad Thai in other comments are out their minds. The Tom Yum soup was so delicious I had high hopes for the pad Thai and couldn't have been more disappointed. The dish was basically dry, stuck together rice noodles with some scrambled egg, peanuts, and pork thrown on top. It was quite literally the dryest pad Thai I've ever had. I wish I had looked at the photos before ordering. Take a look. The pad Thai even looks dry in the photos. Chanon step your game up

Jessica M.

Yelp
A bit disappointed with the flavors of this place. I was informed that SLC had good Thai food. I didn't really believe that, and came in here with low expectations. However, the pad kee mao I ordered still left me sad. For some reason, I said yes to making it a spicy dish. I was under the impression that the spice level was 1-5. Not 0 or 1. It was so spicy! Would definitely not recommend it unless you're sure you can take the heat. The dish itself was really bland compared to the Thai flavors I'm used to in California. Even the color was dull! Almost a cream white compared to the dark brown I have come to love with Thai noodles. The pro? Tasted a little healthier due to lack of flavor/sauces/calories. Restaurant did not get crowded when I came on a Sunday night. Might be due to the snow fall outside, but I imagine snow doesn't deter slc residents from a good meal.

Jay G.

Yelp
I visit SLC every year to ski and always always try to eat here. My favorite Thai restaurant in the US, better than any of the ones in my neighborhood (SF Bay). Only issue is that this is a small place and they sometimes run out of stuff so, if you can, eat on the early side.

BobbiJo K.

Yelp
This place is one of local favorites and we want to support small businesses. Unfortunately they do not seem to be following any of the COVID precautions. Upon picking up our to-go order, there were 5 employees and 0 of them were wearing a mask. There were also children here (likely family) who were unmasked and running around the dining room. Sadly our take-out order was also delayed by nearly an hour for some unexplained reason. No acknowledgment or apology was offered. This was definitely out of the norm for them but disappointing nonetheless.

Shelby H.

Yelp
I had one of the best meals of my LIFE at this cafe. I was craving larb, so we stopped at this small restaurant for dinner. The staff was so warm and funny, and I love the laid-back atmosphere of this place. They were clearly slammed in the kitchen, so we waited a while for our food - it was SO worth it. The pork larb was honestly one of the single most flavorful dishes I have ever eaten, and I was losing my mind - I couldn't even talk, I was so blown away by this meal. My partner got the khee mao noodles and seemed happy with his food. We will definitely come back to Chanon when we are in SLC.
